The results are in It’s time to find out Hoover’s Best of the Best for 2016! At the conclusion of the contest, we had thousands of votes to count to determine our readers’ favorite restaurants, businesses and festivals in Hoover. We are so excited to share all of the winners with you. If you haven’t checked out some of the businesses listed, let this year’s Best of the Best section be your guide. This marks the first year we have held the contest in Hoover, and the response from residents was extremely positive. If you’re relatively new to the area, this is a great opportunity to become more familiar with Hoover’s offerings. As I’ve met more people in Hoover, I’ve realized how supportive they are of each other. Hangin’ at the Hangar demonstrated their spirit of generosity. The first Hangin’ at the Hangar concert benefiting Stop CAID Now, a non-profit organization supporting diagnostics, education, clinical research and efforts to find a cure for childhood autoinflammatory diseases, was tremendously successful, raising

$17,000 total from the event Aug. 20 and from donations that followed. Members of the Hoover Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter organized the concert to support Hoover’s Marleigh Ingle, a 9-yearold girl battling chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), a rare auto-inflammatory bone disease, and to bring more attention to the issues Marleigh and other children with auto-inflammatory diseases cope with daily. The event drew hundreds of people to The Hangar Bar and Grill at the Bessemer Airport for an evening of fellowship, delicious food and live music, all for a great cause. Organizers said they plan for Hangin’ at the Hangar to be an annual event, so watch for announcements about it next year. You can find more of Marleigh’s story in this issue, too. As always, thank you for reading Hoover’s Magazine. If you have any feedback or suggestions for us,

please don’t hesitate to reach out to me! n

H

oover 9-year-old Marleigh Ingle loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She also likes to play math games on the computer, and she is about to start cheerleading. It’s no surprise the bright-eyed, friendly fourth-grader at South Shades Crest Elementary School has a heart for animals and wants to spread cheer among crowds of people. What might surprise people about Ingle, though, is the rare disease she quietly endures; the disease she has handled for the last four years, which inspired a group of Hoover women to organize a benefit concert, Hangin’ at the Hangar, to support Ingle and others like her who have childhood auto-inflammatory diseases. “When she was 5, she was having severe bone pains,” Marleigh’s mother, Teresa Ingle, said shortly after the family arrived at the event venue, The Hangar Bar and Grill, at the Bessemer Airport on Aug. 20. “We thought it was growing pains. It took awhile for them to figure out it was this rare disease.” After being seen by a rheumatologist, Marleigh was diagnosed with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), a rare auto-inflammatory bone disease that causes pain and periodic flare-ups with lesions in her bones. “She copes with a lot of bone pain,” Teresa said, adding Marleigh is currently taking injection medicines. She has also been through infusion therapy and NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. “I’ve had surgery three times,” Marleigh said. Marleigh has overcome multiple setbacks, such as growth and weight challenges, mental challenges related to coping with chronic pain and school absences during flare-ups. “She’s got a very strong spirit (and is) very loving,” Teresa said of Marleigh. “She really is tough, and a very positive child. She’s been a good role model for a lot of people.” The likelihood of a person having CRMO is one in 1 million, Teresa said. Marleigh’s disease is so rare that the members of the Hoover Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter – the organizers of the benefit concert – couldn’t find an organization LEFT: Marleigh Ingle, center, her sister Bailey, far left, and their mother, Teresa, next to Bailey, gather with members of the Hoover Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter. The chapter organized the Hangin’ at the Hangar event to raise money for childhood autoinflammatory disease research and to honor people like Marleigh who cope with such diseases. specific to CRMO for their fundraiser. Instead, they chose to funnel the event’s proceeds to Stop CAID Now, a foundation supporting diagnostics, education, clinical research and efforts to find a cure for such diseases. “We came up with the idea of a benefit concert and thought of Bailey Ingle (one of Marleigh’s older sisters) because she is an ‘up and coming’ Hoover girl that recently sang with Keith Urban,” Hoover Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter President Janet Abernathy wrote in an email. “Then (we) found out about her sister Marleigh who suffers with CRMO. After talking with Teresa, we thought we just have to do this because we can help raise 8

Along with Bailey, other performers at Hangin’ at the Hangar included Livewire, Jordan Beam, Conner Patrick and The Daze. So far, more than $17,000 has been raised, for Stop CAID Now. To donate, visit Gofundme.com/2ebgmsq4. The chapter plans to make Hangin’ at the Hangar an annual event, Abernathy said. “We’re a very small group, and we’re hoping to help in a very big way,” Abernathy said of the chapter. “It all just came together. It was such a community event – the talent donated their time, the Hangar donated the venue, the sound man donated his time and talent, we had so many wonderful sponsors and the community came and supported the cause.” n October 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

THE POWER OF LAUGHTER

Following a brain injury, Vaughn uses newfound technique to revive her passion for art WRITTEN BY CARMEN BROWN PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON

A

labama folk artist Shelia “SheShe” Vaughn still keeps her first box of crayons, a 64 pack with a built-in sharpener, tucked away in a safe place on her farm off of Highway 280. This is when her love for drawing started, as a child growing up in the Over the Mountain area of Birmingham. She has developed a lifelong passion for creating story art and inspiring others through her involvement with organizations like Artists as Educators and the Shelby County Arts Council. Vaughn has been doing art shows throughout the Southeast for over 20 years, doing up to 40 shows a year. “I love to paint anything Alabama,” she said. “Especially fish and our beautiful lakes.” 32

But about three years ago, she suffered a traumatic brain injury that threatened to take this passion away. “My doctors told me ‘I hate to tell you, but you’re going to be a different person,’” Vaughn said. “My life has been changed dramatically. The hardest part for me was how the brain injury manifested itself.” For instance, after her parents passed away, Vaughn had used her art to help her cope emotionally. But six days after her injury, she realized she had suddenly become frightened of bright colors, especially pink. “I was unaware of the changes until they started happening,” she said. “Everything would happen in increments.” One major change was that she lost the creativity, and the passion that comes with it, for art. “I was used to speaking to groups about creativity and overcoming their mental blocks, and now I wasn’t just suffering a block,” she said. “It was more than a block. It simply disappeared.” Although her condition began to improve, Vaughn said that perhaps her biggest realization of how she had changed was that she did not smile for six months. “I was just serious all the time,” she said. “I would just sit and stare into space. I ran a lot of my friends away, because I wasn’t the person they were used to

seeing.” The other major change Vaughn noticedwas that she was not breathing properly. She would often hold her breath for extended periods of time without realizing it. After talking with a friend and doing some research online, Vaughn discovered the power of laughter yoga. “I found out how it teaches you to breathe and teaches you to laugh,” she said. “I realized that I had lost the ability to do both.” She went to her first class in Scottsboro, and before the class was even over, she knew this was something she wanted to teach to others. “I started thinking that if this could help me, maybe I could help other people who had had traumatic brain injuries,” she said. According to the website, laughteryoga.org, Madan Kataria, a physician from India, began popularizing the practice in 1995. A few scientific studies have reported laughter yoga to restore physical and psychological well-being through deep breathing and prolonged, forced laughter. “It gives the same benefit as spontaneous laughter,” she said. “Your brain does not know the difference.” Although laughter yoga is learned and practiced in groups, Vaughn said people can still practice it — Shelia Vaughn individually. “You learn how to breathe, you can lower your blood pressure and get your heart rate down,” she said. “It’s a great life skill.” As a certified laughter yoga leader, Vaughn now integrates her art, laughter yoga and communication skills to help other people who have challenges to overcome, conducting programs at places like The Red Barn, Wounded Women Warriors and local retirement homes and businesses. Vaughn also became a certified peer support specialist, going to mental health facilities throughout the state to helping other people who have gone through significant life-altering experiences.

GLOBAL IMPACT

apor Thrift Store allows residents to shop for desirable items at low prices while supporting an international

mission. The store, which is located at 5443 U.S. 280, generates revenue for Vapor, which “establishes sustainable centers for alleviating poverty and multiplying disciples in thirdworld environments,” according to the organization’s web site.

• Hoover’s Magazine | October 2016

Store Manager Sommer L’Hoste started at Vapor Thrift Store in a position processing donations. L’Hoste said she visited Haiti in 2015 to see two of the centers Vapor has established there. “It was life-changing,” she said. “I fully believed in our mission, my heart was in it, but to be able to see where the money goes… Seeing clean water wells, seeing kids playing soccer at the center—it’s important when

you know your job makes a difference. It’s a wonderful ministry to work for.” A new banner at the front of the thrift store proclaims the operation’s new motto: “Local savings, global mission,” and shows children playing at one of the Vapor centers. L’Hoste said it is part of an effort to educate people about the ministry and thrift store, which is often confused with a vape or e-cigarette shop. Vapor Thrift Store has been open for more than six years. “We want to provide affordable goods and clothing for the community and give the community an opportunity to make a difference while they shop,” L’Hoste said. The operation started off small and grew by word of mouth. Relationships have been established with nearby communities such as Greystone, Highland Lakes and the city of Chelsea, and churches such as The Church at Brook Hills and Church of the Highlands. Now, the store is “busting at the seams,” L’Hoste said. “The community has poured in donations,” she said. “We get donations from all up and down 280.” L’Hoste said she and her staff try to make donating as convenient as possible. There is a donation lane at the building where a driver can pull in and have a vehicle unloaded by a staff member. “You don’t even have to get out of the car,” L’Hoste said. “Someone is waiting to take everything out, and you get a tax deductible receipt.” The result is a store that features top brands in shoes, books, furniture, men’s and women’s clothing, electronics, jewelry and toys. Some items are donated with the tags still on them. Some shoppers come by every day because the selection is always changing, L’Hoste said. Another opportunity Vapor Thrift Store presents to the community is volunteerism, including high school students who are required to perform community service. Also, time spent volunteering entitles shoppers to discounts at the store. The thrift store is hiring for processing positions. Those interested can stop by the store, visit the web site at VaporThrift.com or email L’Hoste at slhoste@ vaporinternational.org. L’Hoste said store employees share a commitment to the Vapor mission. “Vapor is why we’re here,” she said. “People do this job because they believe in it.” More information about the store can be found at VaporThrift.com. More about Vapor can be found at VaporSports.org. n

Preserve artist Katie Adams displays “Harold,” a 36-by-48 oil painting on canvas.

PUPPY LOVE

Preserve artist’s paintings have gone to the dogs — and people love it WRITTEN BY LAUREN DOWDLE PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON

A

rtwork tells a story. Maybe it’s an abstract piece that leaves the meaning up to the beholder. Or, it could be a moment — like a child laughing or waves crashing — that’s been captured with the stroke of a brush. Hoover’s Katie Adams tells her and others’ stories with paint, pencils, textures and an eye for the creative. Although Adams now sells her artwork through her site, 3gingersart. com, that’s not the path she originally thought she’d take. She says she always loved drawing as a child, but she fell away from it in high school. Adams didn’t return to the craft until she was a senior at Auburn University majoring in finance. “After my internship at an insurance company my junior year, I realized I really missed the mark on choosing a major,” Adams says. “I should have chosen something more

creative.” But it wasn’t until she got married and had their first child that Adams took a drawing class at the Birmingham Museum. Her first sketch there was of a Russian man, which was fitting because her art teacher, Svetlana Belotserkovskaya, hailed from the same country. “She is an awesome teacher, and she still teaches in town,” Adams says. “She showed me I could draw human faces.” From there, she began creating human portraits, mostly as pencil sketches. She then moved to oil painting and continued to take different art classes. “Much can be said about the classes offered in town,” says Adams, who lives in the Preserve. “I’ve taken quite a few here and there and have picked up some great tips.” With some experience under her belt, Adams began creating and selling commissioned pieces. October 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

47

But after a while, she started to change her artwork’s focus. “Human portraits take a long time to make, require a great deal of focus and patience and, consequently, are expensive,” Adams says. Instead of recreating human emotions with her pieces, she started to focus on man’s furry friend. “Dogs are so much more fun to paint,” Adams says. “They don’t take as long and they don’t cost as much as human portraits. Plus, I don’t get tired of looking at them. I would rather paint 10 dogs in the same time it takes to do one human.” Adams is definitely not the only one who enjoys looking at man’s best friend. “People love their dogs,” she says. Someone who wants a pet portrait normally sends her several photos of their pet. Then, she works with them to pick a favorite photo, choose a size canvas and discuss any changes that need to be made — such as including their collar, the background color and other details. From there, she gets to work on the

painting. It normally takes her anywhere from two to four days for her to create the artwork. She’ll send a photo of her work to the client, see if they have any adjustments and put the finishing touches on it. Then comes the best part: Giving the final version to the pet parent. “They are always so happy when they get their painting,” Adams says. “That makes me happy.” Seeing people’s reactions to portraits of their fourlegged friends is Adams’s favorite part. She ships her paintings anywhere in the country, or people can pick them up in town.

2016

CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM LEFT: Adams normally spends two to four days on each pet portrait she creates. “Blue Frenchie” is an 8-by10 oil on canvas. Gertie is featured on a 12-by-16 canvas.

Beyond pet portraits, she’s also started dabbling in abstract art, expanding her creative palette. “It’s nice to do something loose after I have been so focused on details and proportions in commissioned work,” Adams says. Residents can see some of her abstract pieces at the Moss Rock Festival at the Preserve Nov. 5-6. She also has some of her pieces at the J.C. Morgan Gallery in Oxford. All of her artwork can be seen on her website, 3gingersart.com, and she can be reached at Katie@3gingersart.com. n

Scheduling surgery by the season What patients should know about following doctors’ orders WRITTEN BY DR. JUSTIN GERTH

I

t’s October. As I drive to the new Outpatient Surgery Center at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, I’m enjoying not just the seasonal beauty surrounding that facility, but the opportunity to provide state-of-the-art, close-to-home surgery for area residents. This is the month when many patients consult me about surgical procedures they put off until after summer vacations, football games or corporate deadlines. They realize that hernia repair their primary care physician suggested or gallbladder surgery their GI doctor recommended can’t be put off any longer. Some patients with other concerns, including abnormal mammograms, have waited and worried unnecessarily. Often I wish they had seen me sooner, so that I could explain the following: uIt’s better to treat early. If your physician suggests a surgical consult this month, get it done before the holidays. A thyroid mass, skin lesion or other concern is unlikely to get better on its own, and could be a cancer that progresses. uEarly surgery usually means smaller incisions. Hernias and masses can get so large that they can’t be repaired laparoscopically or robotically. Laparoscopic surgery allows for smaller incisions and helps with quicker

recoveries. uOnce your doctor suggests a surgical consult, you probably don’t need a new physician referral. Although, you should double-check your insurance plan. uYou have easy access to St. Vincent’s One Nineteen’s state-of-the-art surgical suites. Although not everyone is a candidate for minimally-invasive surgery, many patients are. Area residents now have access to the latest outpatient technology close-to-home. Overall, I suggest patients not schedule their surgeries by the season, but by their physicians’ recommendations. After all, anytime is a great time to make your health a priority. As part of its recent expansion, St. Vincent’s One Nineteen now conveniently offers outpatient surgery on its campus. Located at 7191 Cahaba Valley Road in Hoover, the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Outpatient Surgery Center provides sameday procedures, including General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Plastic surgery, Pain management, ENT, GI and Gynecology. To learn more about the wide range of services on the One Nineteen campus, visit Onenineteen.com. n Dr. Justin Gerth is a general surgeon at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.

SMCS student wins Birmingham chess tournament Shades Mountain Christian School first grader Danny Seewald recently won first place in The Knight School Birmingham citywide MayDay Tournament. He also competed in the Alabama statewide tournament and finished strong among the participants. Seewald is a student at Shades Mountain Christian School and just started his second grade year. He participated in The Knight School chess club during his first grade year, which was also the school’s first year to offer the afterschool program. “Danny was a very hard worker, always willing to help the other kids and possessed a great attitude,” Dr. David Brooks, president of The Knight School, said. Seewald plans to continue with The Knight School this year, and hopes to win another trophy as a second grader. He is the son of Doug and Miarose Seewald and lives in Hoover.

Simmons Middle Dance Team performs at Tailgate Challenge The Simmons Middle School Dance Team performed at The Bell Center for Early Intervention’s annual Tailgate Challenge on Aug. 27. The event had teams competing for the best tailgate tent. One of the Dance Team members, Allie Simmons, is a graduate of the program. The Bell Center for Early Intervention provides intervention services in a center-based program in Birmingham. Infants and toddlers who are at risk for developmental delay receive services from a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a speech-

language pathologist and an early childhood special education teacher as each child works on specific, individual developmental goals. Mommy and Me swim class teaches water basics A child’s introduction to water and swimming needs to be fun and build confidence. Jo-Ann Moulin, swim instructor, lifeguard and exercise physiologist with St. Vincent’s 119, teaches a “Mommy and Me” aquatics class for children and parents. The class is held from 11:15-11:45 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 10-10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, at St. Vincent’s 119, located at 7191 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham. A class consists of eight sessions. The twice-weekly schedule starts over every month, while the weekend schedule starts over every two months. Moulin said the class is held year-round if there is enough demand. Participation usually dwindles in the winter months, though the class is held at the facility’s indoor, heated pool. Moulin said instruction focuses first on safety—then having fun in the water. Classes include the children and their parents working on swimming skills by playing interactive games, singing songs and playing with floating toys.

$1k raised for flood victims In August, Hoover High School held a fundraising effort to benefit two flood-stricken schools in southwestern Louisiana, raising $1,000 in the first 10 minutes of the campaign. Kaplan Elementary (Kaplan, La.) and Cecil Picard Elementary (Maurice, La.) are two affected schools that will be the beneficiaries of the HHS fundraising campaign. Hoover High School Principal Don Hulin, a Louisiana native, helped start the campaign with assistance from student and faculty leaders. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be directed to Kaplan Elementary and Cecil Picard Elementary schools. The school assistance campaign ran through Aug. 23. October 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

Heritage Christian Academy to open in July 2017 Shades Mountain Christian School will become Heritage Christian Academy on July 1, 2017. Next summer, the school will open its doors for the first time at the facility that currently serves as Riverchase Middle School, located at 853 Willow Oak Drive in Birmingham. The name announcement came on Tuesday, Aug. 9 during a school-wide assembly. The new name pays tribute to 40 years of history and is reflective of the school’s founder, the late Richard “Dick” Vigneulle, who often quoted Psalm 127:3: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, His offspring a reward from Him.” A school naming committee was charged by the School Board of Directors to make a formal recommendation for the future name of the school. The committee consisted of school administration, faculty, board members, parents and alumni. The School Board of Directors approved the name Heritage Christian Academy on July 25. Shades Mountain Christian School has shared facilities with Shades Mountain Independent Church since its founding in 1974. In 2012, the school officially became its own nonprofit as a community Christian school. SMCS is comprised of a diverse community of families throughout the Birmingham metro area, and the new location will serve up to 600 students in grades K-12. For more information, contact Lora Vifquain at 978-9311 or loravifquain@smcs.org. 56

Leadership Shelby County introduces new class About 40 members comprising the Leadership Shelby County class of 2017 were introduced at an Aug. 30 alumni breakfast at Jefferson State Community College’s Shelby-Hoover Campus. Leadership Shelby County offers participants an introduction to the community’s challenges and possibilities, and emphasizes learning through experience that provides indepth knowledge, tools and a network to better serve the community, according to the organization’s website. Prior to new member introductions, Shelby County Sheriff ’s Office Chief Deputy Chris George gave the

keynote speech. “There are many people in Leadership Shelby County who have done things they probably wouldn’t have done,” George said. “As you go through the class, come May 2017 when you graduate, continue to be involved.” George talked about the importance of facing one’s fears to achieve goals beyond expectations. “I believe God has a strategic plan to put you in the right place at the right time,” he said. “If you don’t defeat your fears, one day they will defeat you. If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.”

HCS to sell former Berry campus The Hoover Board of Education will sell the former W.A. Berry High School campus to the Vestavia Hills Board of Education for $11 million. U.S. District Judge Madeline Haikala issued a court order Aug. 17 approving the sale of the campus, after Hoover BOE voted in April to sell the property, according to a press release from Hoover City Schools. The campus, which is located off Columbiana Road and is surrounded by the city of Vestavia Hills, comprises about 40 acres and

includes the main school building, a football field/stadium and other miscellaneous athletic facilities, according to Jason Gaston, public/ media relations coordinator for HCS. Before the campus can change hands, the city of Hoover must deannex the property and Vestavia Hills must annex it. These steps are not expected to be roadblocks. The campus opened in 1959 as W.A. Berry High School and was open until 1994, when Hoover High School opened on Buccaneer Drive.
