Until Next Time All good things must come to an end. And for me, that means moving to Nashville and saying goodbye to Hoover’s Magazine. Exactly two years ago, I worked on my first issue as the editor after having been a writer for the magazine since 2012 — and I couldn’t have been more excited. I’ve loved being able to share your stories and make lifelong friends along the way. Working on this issue was no different: I think it might actually be my favorite. God puts some people in your life for a reason — which is something I’m sure everyone who has met or talked to Amy Metz Walker says. Amy, who created the non-profit foundation Custom Made Kid and is featured on the cover with her daughter Landry, has gone through struggles so many woman with infertility problems can relate to. But, God turned her frustrations into something that would change her and others’ lives. In an interesting chain of events, Amy ended up adopting — something she didn’t think she would ever do. And now, she works to raise money and support for other families going through the adoption process. Although her journey to becoming

a mom didn’t go the way she originally wanted, she says she wouldn’t change anything about it. You can read more about her powerful story and foundation starting on page 24. Another heart-warming story features the journey of 13 girls and how they overcame the odds to take home the state softball championship. The Hoover Diamonds All Stars 6U fast-pitch softball team, featured on page 14, has a great comeback story that’s almost as memorable as the friendships the 6- and 7-yearold girls formed. Even if they hadn’t brought home the championship, I would be impressed by just the amount of time and dedication they put into practicing. I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t focused on practicing six days a week when I was that age. You can also read about Hoover’s new Chicken Salad Chick, the Preserve’s Jazz Festival, Park Crest Event Facility, a Reformer studio, Erdos At Home and much more. There’s a little something for everyone.
I couldn’t have asked for a better last issue to work on, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Goodbye for now, Hoover! n

SWINGING SOUNDS Jazz Festival comes back to the Preserve WRITTEN BY LAUREN DOWDLE | PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

sk a person what jazz means to them, and they might respond with a favorite musician, song or just the feeling they get when they hear the lively beat. But for Hoover residents, their answer might be the upcoming Preserve Jazz: Over the Mountain Music Festival. Now in its ninth year, the festival will be Sept. 17 at the Preserve. The event, which has typically been held during early summer, is back after a year 8

hiatus, says Jason Henderson, event organizer and president/CEO of Moss Rock Music. The festival was at the Preserve for the first seven years and then at Sloss Furnace in 2014. Now back in Hoover, Henderson says everyone is excited about it. “We’re moving back to a beautiful park setting,” he says of the Preserve’s 10-acre park. “There’s hardly any obstructive views of the stage, and it sets up like an amphitheater.” They are hoping to have about 2,500 people at the festival, Henderson says, and
there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy. A variety of jazz artists will perform at the festival: Chieli Minucci, Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz guitarist; Alex Bugnon, Swiss-born jazz pianist and composer; Gerald Veasley, bass player extraordinaire; The Stooges Brass Band, Nola’s own; Six Times Cool featuring Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame Inductee Cleve Eaton; Vann Burchfield, Guinness World Record Holder and saxophonist; Keith “Cashmere” Williams, smooth jazz guitarist; and the Hoover High “First Edition” Jazz Band. “We’ve done a good job of having a lot of different genres of jazz each year, from contemporary to smooth,” he says. “It broadens people’s perspective of jazz.”
Henderson says they’ve wanted to include Hoover’s jazz band in the past, but it never worked out when the festival was held during the summer. So, they are excited the jazz band will be able to kick off the event this year. “It’s a neat platform for these young jazz musicians to open up our deal,” he says. Beyond the swinging music, there will also be a vendor village, which will feature six to eight vendors with things like jazz oil paintings and jewelry. Something else that’s new for the festival is allowing limited parking along Preserve Parkway — in addition to having shuttles to

Theatre Renovation Redesigned level means more space and updated look
When the Hoover Library opened in 1992, Library Director Linda Andrews included groundbreaking ideas in the library’s floor plan including two art galleries, meeting room spaces and The Library Theatre and Box Office on the Theatre Level of the library. Many Hoover residents use the meeting rooms on a Elin Glenn monthly basis, and patrons Public Relations from surrounding areas enjoy Specialist viewing artwork by local and Hoover Public Library regional artists and attending performances in The Library Theatre. To better serve you, our patrons, the Theatre Level of the Hoover Library is getting a makeover. The meeting room and art gallery spaces will be renovated during the months of August and September. A redesign of the Theatre Level art gallery area and meeting rooms will mean more function and event space, as well as an updated look. Flexible partitions will be installed, allowing the entire meeting room and gallery space to be opened up and utilized as one area for large events, allowing up to 250 guests to meet and mingle. The moveable partitions will also be used to create two meeting areas, the Fitzgerald Room and the Shakespeare Room. New audiovisual equipment will be available in the meeting rooms, too. All Hoover residents who are members of a not-for-profit organization can reserve a meeting room. Through the end of September, the Theatre Level will be inaccessible to library patrons. Please call 444-7888 to reach the Arts Department staff to assist you with meeting rooms, art gallery inquiries and the upcoming Library Theatre season information. Tickets for The Library Theatre’s 25th Season will go on sale in September! Please check our website, Thelibrarytheatre.com, for more details. We look forward to sharing the Theatre Level’s new look with you later this fall. n Elin Glenn is the public relations specialist at the Hoover Public Library. COMEBACK KIDS Hoover Diamonds softball team brings home a championship

oach Matthew Morris smiles and says his Hoover Diamonds All Stars 6U fast-pitch girls softball team had a “flair for the dramatic” the day they won the USSSA State Tournament. “In the last game, the last inning, we were down by five runs and had two outs,” he says. “The girls scored six to win it.” They ended that game 16-15 over Gardendale. And as a result, the 13 Diamonds got a different kind of gem — a championship ring. “They are golden and really big; it doesn’t even fit my finger,” says Madison, Morris’ 7-year-old daughter, who played on the team. But the girls absolutely loved it, Morris says. “They were proud of themselves.” Their victory in the state tournament, held June 23-25 in Calera, was the culmination of a come-from-behind spirit that the 6- and 7- year-olds had been holding strong for weeks, according to Amanda Dockery, whose daughter Mackenzie played for the Diamonds. “This was their first time competing in the Rec/All Stars league,” she says. “They worked tirelessly for over six weeks, six days a week practicing and participating in two pre-area tournaments and one area tournament before state. They began the season at the bottom of the rankings and worked diligently with their four coaches to fight their way to first place.”

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: The girls won a championship ring they are proud to wear. They practiced throughout the heat of summer without any complaints. The girls take practicing seriously, but they also know how to have fun. The coaches say they were surprised at how well the girls played defense.

They finished undefeated in the tournament, with five wins — and ranked first in the nation at the end of it. “They really were able to put it together,” Morris says. “They had improved every week.” The girls — Anabelle Beasley, Ellie Robinson, Maddie Maddox, Lily Cate Campbell, Emory Congleton, Scarlett Worley, Emma Pines, Reagan Roberts, Ryleigh Williams, Callie Wallace and Piper Smith, along with Madison Morris and Mackenzie Dockery — showed up ready to play. “I like playing softball because I have fun and so I can get better,” says Mackenzie Dockery. It was a sentiment Morris says the girls all shared. And their coaches — Jason Wallace, Chris Dockery and Ingram Worley, along with Morris — were impressed. Morris says he hadn’t been sure what to expect in the tournament. But the girls “came in and played well and won games pretty easily,” he says. “You wouldn’t necessarily expect to see strong defense from 6- and 7-year-old girls. But they were catching pop flies and line drives and throwing the ball from third to first,” he said. “They practiced hard, and it showed.” The girls were committed, Morris says. At that age, and in the heart of summer, practice can really cut into nighttime activities, weekends and family vacations. “But the girls that signed up came, and they worked hard even when they were tired. And they loved it. They never complained,” he says. “Throughout the season, we try to incorporate some fun, like water balloon fights and water gun fights. But even when we were just working hard and it was hot outside, they never complained.” They’re too young to really understand how big a win it was or how they did it, Morris says, but they will look back on it one day and know. And hopefully, he adds, they will also remember how much they enjoyed it. His daughter is off to a good start on that. Madison said the whole experience was “really fun.” “I got to play, and I got to make new friends,” she says — and that scored bigger than even the ring. n September 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

he aches, pains and injuries that come with life can slow you down — which is the exact opposite of what your body needs if it’s having these problems. Someone who can definitely relate to all of that is Ainslie McLean. Growing up, McLean played soccer and continued to through college. So it seemed only natural that she would go to a pick-up 18

game as an adult. But during the game, she got side tackled, which led to her needing her ACL reconstructed. That was just the first of many health setbacks. “As I got older and had kids, I became debilitated,” McLean says. “My hips hurt all of the time, and I couldn’t run anymore. I was miserable.” She saw various doctors who took X-rays and MRIs, only to say that everything was
fine. “They just gave me pain killers, and I’m allergic to them,” she says. “Muscular pain doesn’t necessarily show up on X-rays or MRIs, but the pain is real. It can be debilitating.” Her friend even invited her to a Pilates class to see if it would help, but McLean ended up just hurting more afterward. Still looking for some relief, she tried a Reformer class a year later and actually felt better after
the first time. The Reformer machine is based off of the exercises of Joseph Pilates — founder of Pilates — except it involves taking all of the gravity and weight off of the person’s weakest points. The frame rolls back and forth on wheels, and there are also straps that can be used for feet and hands. “You can burn 969 calories an hour, without getting all hot and sweaty afterward,”

she says. “You’ll feel so much better. It’s a doable lifestyle change for real people: People just haven’t heard of it.” After going to these classes for a while, her Reformer teacher suggested she should make a job out of it and teach her own classes. McLean followed her advice and began working toward her certification. As part of the process, she had to teach 100 free hours, and she was able to do that at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, becoming Balanced Body Certified. It would seem everything was going in the right direction for McLean to have a happy and healthy lifestyle, but her body had other plans. She had a heart attack at age 39 and later found out she had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and lupus — which caused her to have arthritis. Those were all things she wasn’t expecting, especially considering her focus on fitness. Instead of making her conditions a life sentence of immobility, she continued with her Reformer passion and began working on making it a business of her own.

In February 2015, she opened Reformu Reformer Training Studio and moved to her current location in the Inverness Highlands shopping center. It’s a way for her to help others find the physical relief and wellness she has come to enjoy, she says. “Before, I couldn’t sleep, walk or be a good mom and wife,” McLean recalls. “The Reformer worked the very first time. It takes your pain away, so why wouldn’t you try it? “If something hurts, you’ll stop and try something else,” she continues. “There are 400 exercises you can try.” Her client success stories include a 79-year-old man who had bypass surgery and tight hamstrings who was able to fix his muscle issues without surgery. And that list goes on and on. “Everybody’s issues are different. We ask them about their goals and go from there,” McLean explains. “When you feel like you can move, your whole life is better.” Her business partner, Frankie Romano, joined the team in February 2015. He brought experience from working in physical therapy and training athletes, along with

WHAT IS PILATES? The Reformer machine is based off of Pilates’s exercises, which focus on proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, concentration on flowing movement and becoming in tune with your body, according to Pilates.com. Pilates works to give people control of their core, which leads to balanced strength and flexibility. This type of exercise conditions the whole body, even ankles and feet. It’s known for benefits like injury recovery, good posture and sports performance.

Our Urgent Care Center is one of the few after-hours locations across the city open until 9 p.m. during the week and 6 p.m. on the weekend. Did I mention there are minimal wait times, and you don’t have to make an appointment? Thank you for allowing St. Vincent’s One Nineteen to care for you and your family. And while we now offer more services than ever before, our commitment to expanding our services doesn’t end today. As long as this community continues to grow, we will be growing right there with you — bringing even more specialties, physicians and services to your neighborhood. St. Vincent’s One Nineteen is located at 7191 Cahaba Valley Road right off Hwy. 280 on Hwy. 119. For more information, visit Onenineteen.com, follow us on Facebook or call 408-6600. n Stephanie Holderby is the vice president of operations for St. Vincent’s Ambulatory Healthcare Network and executive director of St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. How God’s custom-made plans shaped a family’s journey WRITTEN BY LAUREN DOWDLE PHOTOS BY JESS HENDERSON, OWNER OF LOVE YA JESS PHOTOGRAPHY
“C
hildren are a gift from the Lord. They are a reward from him.” (Psalm 127:3) But for women dealing with infertility, that verse can sting and bring more questions than answers. All of those emotions, frustrations and pains are things Amy Metz Walker knows all too well. Walker, a Hoover resident, has struggled with infertility for more than a decade now. “There’s not an area of your life infertility doesn’t touch,” she says. She openly shared her journey and faith through her blog, where she soon grew a good readership — to her surprise. “I thought just my mom and best friend would read it,” she says with a laugh. As she blogged about her struggles with infertility, it didn’t take long for people to start suggesting she should adopt. But, she didn’t want to hear that. “I said, ‘God’s going to have to drop a baby in my lap if that’s what he wants. That was selfish,” Walker recalls. “I wasn’t opposed to adoption. I just felt like that was giving up on my biology. I kept making it 24

about me.” One of her readers in Texas, a longtime friend, took that as a challenge and said, “If I ever find a family with a child, I know who I’m calling.” Fifteen days later, Walker got a call about a baby: her daughter Landry. “I thought of the story of Abraham and Isaac: He was an answer to their prayers and then they were asked to sacrifice this child,” Walker explains. “I asked God, ‘Are you asking for me to lay down what I thought motherhood would be like,’ and he was.” Of course, it hasn’t been all rainbows since the adoption, and there are still times she thinks about her struggles. But, she knows it’s all part of God’s plan. “When people say I got by easy because I didn’t give birth to her, I tell them I longed for her for years, and I labored for her with tears,” Walker says of her now 4 1/2-yearold daughter. “She couldn’t be more mine if I had her myself.” Just looking at Landry, people would think they saw a resemblance to Walker. “I felt confirmation throughout,” Walker says. “She has a birthmark just like mine
Walker wrote a book to show her daughter and other children how they were fearfully and wonderfully made, no matter what their family looks like.

that was a mirror image to me. Even my parents say she’s a little Amy Metz. I would joke and say if I could have custom made a kid, it would be her. It’s not about perfect kids or perfect people: It’s about giving me the perfect child for me.” Walker wanted to find a book that explained the special love she had for Landry, but she couldn’t. So, she decided to create one. “This isn’t just our story: It’s every child’s story,” Walker says. “God uniquely designs each of us for a purpose.” Her book — which went to print in August and will be available this fall — shares how children can grow in a mother’s stomach or heart and that the child is loved no matter how they got to where they are. “If one kid reads this book and feels special, that’s amazing — even if it’s just my daughter if she’s questioning her worth,” she says. “That’s why I did it.” The book is fully illustrated and has been quite a while in the making, although Walker didn’t know that. The beginnings of this book actually started back when she was in high school. Walker met a girl on her school bus when she was in the ninth grade and started up a — Amy Metz Walker conversation. “I said I wanted to be a writer, and she said she wanted to be an illustrator,” Walker recalls. So when she needed someone to illustrate her book, Walker knew who to reach out to. And with the creation of the book idea came the non-profit foundation, Custom Made Kid. In addition to the book, Walker came out with a Custom Made Kid T-shirt line, which can be purchased online. All of the proceeds from Custom Made Kid go to support people in the adoption process. It was her way to give back to others she could truly relate to. She also partners with families for fundraising events, since it can be difficult for people to ask for money for themselves to cover adoption costs, which can range from $20,000 to $50,000. The event gives couples a way to share their story and also sell T-shirts to raise money for their adoption. They can also have people order shirts off of the Custom Made Kid website and use a code for that

THE FACE OF A CURE The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders is committed to finding a cure for Grace and the more than 1,500 children who come to us for care each year. As a founding member of the Children’s Oncology Group,* Children’s of Alabama and UAB combine research and innovative therapies to help save the lives of children down the street and around the world. Although the cancer cure rate has risen from 50 to 84 percent in just 20 years and strokes in patients with sickle cell disease have decreased 90 percent through standardized screening processes, we are actively working toward a TOTAL CURE for children like Grace.

family. “The shirt idea is a way to ask for help and give something tangible in return for support,” Walker says. She remembers back to when she first made the decision to adopt and knows how difficult it can be, especially the financial aspect. “If I had let my brain outweigh my heart, the money would have been hugely prohibitive,” says Walker, who had a small window of time to raise the funds for her adoption. “I don’t want other families to say no to their epic love story because of costs.” Her experiences have given her a unique perspective to share with others going through similar journeys.
“I can speak from both sides: from the side of not wanting my life to go that way to feeling blessed beyond my wildest imagination with adoption,” Walker says. She wants to take her experiences and encourage people, no matter where they are in their journey. And as for the path she took, she wouldn’t change it at all. “Every second of my grief during the infertility period, I would do it all over again to have her,” Walker says. “Even now, the wound is still there, but I would never change a bit of my story. “It’s a really long love story,” she says. For more information or to support Custom Made Kid, visit Custommadekid.com. n

Party Starters Park Crest Event Facility opens stunning new venue WRITTEN BY LAUREN DOWDLE | PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY 30

T
he best parties, weddings and events have one thing in common: the perfect venue. Maybe that means finding the perfect outdoor garden, cozy dining space or a large, farmhouse-style area. Luckily, people can find all of that right here in Hoover. For longtime residents, they might remember the site off of Lorna Road as the former home of restaurants like the Grandview Building and Grammas Italian Restaurant. The Beard family purchased the property back in 2006 and transformed it from a dining spot to a stunning event facility, says Chase Beard. Park Crest Event Facility has three venue areas: Park Crest Place, The Gardens and The Carriage House. They host a variety of events at the venues, including weddings, receptions, holiday parties and private parties. Park Crest Place, a converted restaurant space, includes a dining area, bar, dance floor, lobby and two patios. The Gardens, especially popular during the spring and fall, is the outdoor venue where people can enjoy breathtaking views, stunning surroundings, a tranquil water fountain and beautiful landscaping. “There’s really nothing like that in the city
of Hoover with that type of view,” Beard says. The newest (and largest) of the three venues, The Carriage House is truly a family endeavor. Beard, son of Kelli and Gary, designed and built the 20,000-square-foot space, which opened in April of this year. “My father came to me before I graduated college, and he had the idea of The Carriage House to add it to the facility that was already there,” Beard says. “He asked me to come and learn the family business.” Beard, who earned a building science degree from Auburn University, says he has always been interested in construction and knew that was the career path for him. “But, I didn’t realize the first real project I would do would be a 20,000-square-foot event facility,” says Beard, who is now 27. He started designing the space in 2013, and construction on The Carriage House began in the beginning of 2015. They worked through obstacles like weather delays along the way, but the new venue opened about a year after they broke ground. “There’s really no building like it in Birmingham, which is what we were going for with the design,” Beard says.
PAGE 30: There are large chandeliers that add to the elegant, rustic design in The Carriage House. ABOVE: The Gardens are especially popular during the cooler months and have views that are hard to match. LEFT: The downstairs space at The Carriage House has an upscale warehouse look.

During the design process, Beard tried to create something that would have staying power, but also appeal to current trends of design and architecture. “I thought a farmhouse-style building would be popular,” he says. “I wanted to use a lot of light colors and whites and make everything breezy as far as decorating goes.” After months of creating sketches and designs using software, Beard says his ideas morphed into “something everybody would enjoy.” Once everything was complete, he took some time to really take the whole experience in. “It’s very rewarding. I sat out there for about 30 minutes just staring at it. This was my first commercial project to be around,” Beard says. “I love that building and the project. It’s such a rewarding experience.” The Carriage House has a 36-foottall double-sided fireplace, eye-catching chandeliers, stained cedar and whitewashed walls on the main level. There are also separate bridal and groom suites and outdoor terraces. “The space really can transform into anything you want it to be,” Beard says. “There are such big, open rooms and a good flow.” Downstairs feels like a different building, Beard says. It has an upscale warehouse look with concrete walls and a stacked-stone bar. There’s also a state-of-the-art sound system, which is available on both floors. The Carriage House holds about 900 people. “There’s something for everybody,” he says. “You can decorate to make it for smaller groups or have the run of the whole facility.” Beard says all of the Park Crest venues are filling up quickly, with people already booking events for the beginning of 2018. “We encourage everyone who has their heart set on Park Crest not to procrastinate,” he says. The facility offers classic car rentals, bar services and is getting into catering, with help from Chef Darryl Borden. The family also knows a lot of people in the wedding and event industries and can make recommendations. Park Crest Event Facility is located at 2030 Little Valley Road. memorable piece of furniture tells a story. Maybe it’s a rocking chair that’s been passed down for generations or a new, modern table that is a true statement piece. For John Erdos, his furniture is his story. Before becoming CEO and chief creative director of Erdos At Home (formerly I.O. Metro), Erdos lived in Singapore for more than two decades. He worked with J.Crew and ran their buying office there. He moved out there with no furniture, so he found himself looking for pieces to add to his new home. But the search wasn’t easy, and he couldn’t really find anything nearby he liked. So, he harnessed his entrepreneurial, creative
• Hoover’s Magazine | September 2016
spirit and started selling furniture in a 12,000-square-foot retail shop in Singapore. “Furniture has been my passion for a long time,” Erdos explains. “My mother would refinish pieces she found at yard sales and odd places. I was always attracted to that.” Five years into his new business, he started designing the furniture. It didn’t take long for 95 percent of what he sold to be something he made. “For people to actually spend money on it and have them put it in their homes, that’s an amazing feeling,” he says. Erdos says he wanted to move back to the United States about a year and a half ago, and that’s when he got connected to I.O. Metro through an old colleague of his.
“When investors hired me, they wanted me to freshen up the I.O. Metro look,” he says. So, he developed a vision, and the concept for Erdos At Home was born. All of the I.O. Metro stores were converted to the new name and style by March of this year — including the one in Hoover’s Patton Creek. “Hoover is a metropolis and growing quite rapidly,” he says. “For someone in the home furniture business, that’s a good market to be in.” The 8,082-square-foot store offers furniture and home décor for living spaces, dining rooms, bedrooms, offices and other living spaces. They have pieces like tables,
chairs, sofas, sectionals, mirrors, artwork, bedding, pillows, rugs, lighting and much more. There are 12 Erdos At Home stores across the country, and Erdos, who lives in Dallas, Texas, visits them all regularly. “We tend to be a bit more relaxed and don’t take ourselves too seriously — a dose of the unexpected,” Erdos says. “We don’t want our collections to be predictable. “People’s tastes and trends change,” Erdos continues. “It’s important to bring in new stuff — which is what differentiates us from competitors.” Beyond just being stylish, Erdos At Home

also makes functionality a top priority. “Comfort is very important to me,” he says. “If it’s not comfortable, it just doesn’t work.” One popular collection in the Hoover store is Tribeca, which has an industrial, modern feel. “I was a bit surprised by that,” Erdos says. “I thought the more traditional look would do better.” For people who do want a take on traditional style, they can check out the Westport collection. get lost in the sofa,” Erdos says. “You just sit down and want to fall asleep.” Their coastal pieces in the Hampton collection have also done well, along with the 21 Club sofa, which is one of his favorite pieces. “It’s a blue leather sofa inspired by Chesterfield Designs,” Erdos says. He conceives all of the store’s merchandising concepts, and he plans to design furniture they’ll sell in the store down the road, as well. “I wouldn’t sell anything in the store I

wouldn’t want in my own home,” Erdos says. “People invite us into the most private spaces with our furniture. They live with it everyday, and we want them to enjoy it.” In addition to a large array of furniture and décor pieces, Erdos At Home also offers free design services. “We know not everyone is good at putting furniture together, so someone will come over and give recommendations, based on what you want,” he says. “We’ll help you with whatever you want, whether you want to do one area or the whole room.” So no matter if residents are just looking to get ideas or are ready to buy pieces, Erdos encourages them to come check out the store. “We’re there for inspiration as much as

we are for selling furniture,” Erdos says. “We’d love for them to come experience the collections we have.” Erdos says they might open stores in new locations starting next year. But for right now, they are focused on making the new Erdos At Home stores successful. “I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised when they visit us,” he says. “And that’s the feedback I get from people when they see our big collection. I’m proud of what we’ve put together and what we’ve done.” Erdos At Home is located in Patton Creek near Bella’s and Firebirds. SMCS supports Christian school
The Shades Mountain Christian School (SMCS) Athletics Department coordinated a mission trip to Romania in June. The SMCS group consisted of 18 travelers including the athletic director, coaches, faculty, parents and nine student athletes. The purpose of the mission trip was to support the Richard Wurmbrand Christian School in Lasi, Romania. The Richard Wurmbrand Christian School opened in 1995 and is dedicated to giving hope back to Romania by educating its children for a brighter future. The school is named after the well-known Christian minister and author, Richard Wurmbrand who spent most of his life in prison due to his Christian beliefs and speaking out against Communism. The SMCS group hosted a fiveday basketball camp, which included daily devotionals and Bible studies. They also provided opportunities for intramural sports and worked on the grounds around the school. The SMCS Athletics Department has a long-term goal to raise money to fund a new playground for the Richard Wurmbrand Christian School.

Both Spain Park and Hoover made the preseason poll. Spain Park, which finished the 2015 regular season as the No. 1 team in 7A and fell just short of a 7A state title, heads into the 2016 regular season ranked as No. 5 team in the classification. The Jags received 169 total points in the inaugural vote, placing them five points ahead of Bob Jones and three points behind Central-Phenix City. Hoover, Spain Park’s biggest rival, came in as the No. 3 team in 7A in the first poll, while McGill-Toolen, the defending 7A champions, came in at No. 1. The ASWA prep committee votes each week during the season on the top 10 teams in each classification.

Labor of Love Couple continues to add their style and upgrades to Trace Crossings home WRITTEN BY HEATHER JONES SKAGGS PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON
R
od and Lissa Hines remember when Highway 150 in Hoover was a two-lane road and the development of Trace Crossings was in its early stages. “At the time we decided to build in Trace Crossings, it seemed a bit remote, but we liked the fact that Trace Crossings Elementary School had just opened and Hoover High School would be opening the following year,” Rod says. For Lissa, a veteran educator and counselor
in the Hoover School System, quality schools were top on the priority list in seeking a location to build. The appeal of the new Trace Crossings development and an empty cul-desac lot made the Willow Trace neighborhood a perfect site for the Hines to choose. “Our home was designed and built by Wood, Powers and Hastings. We also liked that the plans gave us a large wooded back yard. So, we have a great deal of privacy,” Lissa says. Twenty-three years later, the Hines still

love their home and have made changes to it with updates and renovations. Lissa, now retired but working as a part-time counselor at Deer Valley Elementary School, says the addition of a screened-in porch increased their living space and allowed them to branch out from the kitchen. “We enjoy having family and friends over, so that gave us more room for folks to gather. Dinners on the porch with good food and interesting conversation are some of our most special times,” she adds. The original porch was a smaller, open deck, and when discussions to renovate came up, Rod says they decided to enlarge the space and screen it in, rather than make it into a sunroom. “We liked the idea of an outdoor feel for the room,” 48

he says. A tile floor was added to enhance the natural aesthetic and to add function and durability. For great outdoor cooking, an open grilling deck was added. When it came to furnishing the porch, Lissa says the couple wanted it to be comfortable and inviting. “The seating/conversation area of the room is a transitional style — sort of a classic and contemporary mix,” she explains. Lissa describes their style as on the eclectic side, saying she tends to like a more contemporary, minimalist design, while Rod leans

toward a more rustic feel. Their outdoor living area opens up into the kitchen with plants that bring the outdoors in, continuing the theme inside. The kitchen has seen quite a few changes during the years with new paint, tile floors, granite counter tops and cabinets that were given a facelift. “We hired a carpenter to remove the kitchen desk and build a wine bar in its place. We are so glad we did, as we never used the desk. But now, with the wine refrigerator, glass racks and counter, it is much more functional,” Rod says. The Hines continue to update and change other rooms in their Trace Crossings home as their needs change. “We wanted to move toward a more updated style, a little less fussy and more contemporary look with a grey and yellow
palette. Our favorite new feature in the den is the fabric on the ottoman...it looks like real river rocks,” Lissa says. For the dining area, it was time for a new table. “We just had a farm table built for the dining area. The carpenter was recommended by a friend, and the wood for the table is repurposed from a building on our friend’s family’s land,” Lissa says. The Hines not only love their home in Trace Crossings, but they also love their community and neighborhood and say they would not want to live anywhere else. “It is friendly, quiet and convenient to everything — schools, shopping, parks and the interstate,” Lissa says. Next for the Hines’s renovation agenda is to update all the bathrooms and to add hardwood floors in the master bedroom continuing to invest in the home they love. n

Mixing It Up Riverchase’s Chicken Salad Chick offers new flavors and dishes WRITTEN BY GRACE THORNTON PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
W
hen Stacy Brown opened the first Chicken Salad Chick in 2008 in Auburn, she made 40 pounds of chicken salad — and sold out in less than two hours. The next day, she made twice as much — and sold out of that just as fast. Now eight years and 54 restaurants later, Chicken Salad Chick just opened a new location in Riverchase — one with something special for Hooverarea residents. 52

It’s an opportunity for them to be the first to try some new menu items, just like those first customers in 2008. “Our new Riverchase Chicken Salad Chick will be unique in many ways, including new chicken salad flavors and menu items,” says Brown, founder of Chicken Salad Chick. The new restaurant — located at 3780 Riverchase Village, Suite 110 — is a test kitchen for the other Chicken Salad Chick locations, so customers will be able to try new things there first and help hone the product

with feedback, says Scott Deviney, CEO of Chicken Salad Chick. “It’s our opportunity to test a few things and see what the community would do with that restaurant,” he says. “And so far, the feedback has been unbelievable.” All of the other Chicken Salad Chick locations have 15 standard flavors, but at the Riverchase location, they’ve cut that selection back to 10 to make room for new flavors. “We added a new flavor to make it 11 total there — Lauren’s Lemon Basil, which is a really great flavor,” Deviney says. The new location also has toasters, new salad options and an additional pimento cheese with jalapeños added. “The toasting of bread has gone extremely well there, so we are looking to add that to the menu of four more stores outside of Birmingham,” Deviney says. Another item — the chicken salad BLT — has been so well received that they expect
to market that one more widely in the future too, he adds. “It’s been a phenomenal product that our customers love. I can see that one going throughout the franchise.” And if anyone is wondering about the cookies, Deviney says there’s a chance to try a new one there, too. “Stacy’s thought was always that everybody wants something sweet after a meal,” he says. “So we are testing out a twobite sugar cookie with fresh butter cream icing.” It’s probably the most controversial move of the new location, Deviney jokes, because they are testing it in place of their warm cookie of the day, an item available at other locations. “That one was a different flavor every day, like chocolate chip or snickerdoodle,” he says. “The two-bite butter cream would be a potential replacement for those, if it is well received. Once we roll this into further test locations, we’ll continue to gather that

data and see if customers really want that different warm cookie every day or if this one is so good they are OK with just having it.” Another new addition at the Riverchase location is an expanded kids’ menu that’s more visible, Deviney says. “We added it to the menu board so that people know we have kid options,” he says, noting they offer mac and cheese and three sandwiches — peanut butter and jelly, turkey or chicken salad. “We just kind of brought that to life on
the menu at this store,” Deviney says. “And we’re working to gather customer feedback all the time on our new menu and design.” When the Riverchase location opened its doors June 1, more than 100 people had been waiting in line since early that morning. The first person in line got one free pound of chicken salad per week for a year, and the next 99 got one free pound per month for a year, Deviney says. The Chicken Salad Chick folks say that’s part of the “Southern hospitality” they are known for.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The chicken salad flavors are named after important people in Stacy Brown’s life. They use fresh ingredients in all of their dishes. They are trying out a few different dishes and flavors, like Lauren’s Lemon Basil. People can order sandwiches, sides and even get the chicken salad by the pound.

“So far, we’ve had a very positive reception at that location,” Deviney says. The franchise now has four Birminghamarea stores — the Riverchase location, one in Homewood’s SoHo center, one in Southside and another at the Lee Branch shopping center. But Chicken Salad Chick is also looking at a few more locations in the area for potential expansion. Alabaster is one possibility, as is Trussville, Deviney says. “We’re constantly evaluating opportunities.” The Riverchase Chicken Salad Chick location is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It’s located at 3780 Riverchase Village next to Best Buy. For more information, visit Chickensaladchick.com. n LEFT: Stacy Brown, founder of Chicken Salad Chick, has now opened 54 restaurants. why I love Hoover
‘Hoover is family! The school made me the person I am today, and I am forever grateful.’
K
rystle Johnson has come full circle. A 2001 Hoover High School graduate, Johnson is now the head girls basketball coach at the school. She played basketball at Hoover and then at the University of Alabama. Her passion for the game continued into her professional life. She worked as the assistant JV girls basketball coach for five years at Hoover High School and then took the head coaching position at Huntsville High School in 2012. She accumulated a 98-40 record with four straight regional tournament appearances for a program that had never made it to a regional. Now, she’s back at home and will have her first game as Hoover’s head coach Nov. 8 against Fairfield High School. Q: How did you get interested in basketball? A: I became interested in basketball while I was in the sixth grade, primarily because of Shaquille O’Neal. My nickname was Baby Shaq. Q: What’s your most memorable moment as a basketball player? A: As a player, my most memorable 82

moment was in 2005 when my team (University of Alabama) almost upset LSU who was the No. 1 team in the nation. I had my career high that game against LSU’s star center, Sylvia Fowles. She went on to be a WNBA All Star, WNBA finals MVP and is currently on the USA Women’s Basketball Olympic team. Q: How would you describe your coaching style? A: Honest and strategic. I’m always looking for ways to put my players in the best position to win. Q: What’s your favorite part about coaching? A: Impacting the lives of young women! I make it my duty to work on the player and the person. Q: What do you love about Hoover? A: Hoover is family! The school made me the person I am today, and I am forever grateful.
Q: What is something not many people know about you? A: I enjoy singing, but I’m shy. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: Sleep and watch Netflix. Q: Where are your favorite places to go in Hoover? A: Olive Garden, Johnny Rockets, Yuki Japanese Steakhouse, Beef O’Brady’s, Walmart and Target. Q: What are your goals for the Hoover High School girls’ basketball team? A: The goal every year is to put ourselves in the position to win state. Q: What would you say to encourage community members to come out and support the team? A: I remember when I was younger and playing at Hoover and the excitement in the gym was electrifying. The whole city was behind us, and I’d love to see that happen this season. n
