ON THE COVER
Catherine & Jacob
Catherine and Jacob both grew up in Columbiana but didn’t meet until years later when they were both students at Auburn University.
Weathington
HHalf a decade ago I remember sitting on a fence about the inevitable “ring by spring” epidemic that seemed to plague the female senior population on campus. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I recall perusing through corridors, embarking to classes and dodging girls flashing the rocks on their fingers.
Then, I would’ve said girls should focus on their education and avoid the so-called “MRS” degree that skeptics such as myself would joke about being one attainment so many seem to pursue.
Admittedly, I am now only five years wiser and humbled to say I so enjoy being engaged because I found my “Mr. Right.”
I look back at freshman me, whose face resembled that of a pepperoni pizza and whose stress level required four mugs of joe a day, and laugh, thinking if only she knew that she, too, would fall in love at a young age.
One of my best friends Beth and I were invited to lunch by my cousin, Bobby, while we all happened to be in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We met up with Bobby and unknowingly to us several of his fraternity brothers.
I sat right next to my “Mr. Right” himself, who looked completely uninterested that two Hippie Sabotage enthusiasts were helping themselves to the table’s shared cornucopia of breadsticks.
Hours soon faded as the sun retreated, and Justin, my now fiancé and father of my son, and I became inseparable. We played tic-tac-toe in the sand, drawing janky lines with our toes and trying to out-wit the other. Unfortunately, tic-tac-toe takes all of 30 seconds to play, so there’s not much room to one-up your opponent. Our conversation soon turned to politics, music tastes, our lives’ ambitions and how we each were going to make our mark in the world. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history.
Now just a few short months out from our tying the knot, I can’t help but smile at the younger version of myself, who was utterly disgusted by the idea of being entrapped by love.
My message for you, readers, is that life often tricks you into thinking you’re in control. I believe in a greater power who has a sense of humor one that involves the best plans for us. To the young and hopeful reading my letter, I pray for you to find your “Mr. or Mrs. Right,” but just know that he or she may meet you when you least expect it. But, isn’t that the beauty of falling in love? Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. To that I say, love on.
Warmly,

BLOOMING BUDS
Twenty five years into the floral business, Susan Conn and Kelly Burley share that beauty isn’t so much in the bouquet as it is in the relationships that bloom from business.
BY CARMEN BROWN PHOTOS BY PATRICK MCGOUGH
OOffering a shoulder to cry on after a heartbreaking loss. Hearing countless love stories in preparation for majestic weddings. Sharing tears of sorrow or joy with customers who may have only been strangers seconds before they walked in the door. In any time, in any city, all of the happy and sad moments of life are commemorated in one place: the local flower shop. And one flower shop here has stood the test of time, a
fixture in the lives of thousands of Shelby County residents.
Now celebrating the 25th anniversary of its opening in September 1997, Shelby County residents have consistently voted Main Street Florist as a winner or finalist in Shelby Living’s annual “Best of the Best.” Owners Kelly Burley and her mother, Susan Conn, have been warm, familiar faces in Shelby County,
14 January/February 2023
helping customers put together the right arrangements for all occasions.
“We’ve been so blessed,” Susan says. “We’ve never slowed down.”
Main Street Florist has two locations: one in Columbiana, which was the first store to open in 1997, and Mt Laurel, which opened in 2002. Kelly’s husband, Walker, and Susan’s husband, Michael, are also co-owners.
Susan lovingly bragged on her daughter, recalling her love for designing from the time she was a little girl.
“Kelly could be Martha Stewart,” she says. “She cooks, she bakes, she makes cookies, she paints and does folk art. Growing up, she was always inviting her friends over, having parties and teaching them how to make things like Easter packages.”
Kelly had recently finished college and was working a parttime job on Saturdays along with a job in the corporate world, but she quickly discovered how much she was enjoying the part-time job.
“I love making things, and I thought it would be fun to work with flowers,” Kelly says. “I worked a few Saturdays at my parttime job, and they offered me a full-time job, making what I made at my corporate job. I decided after about a year it would be fabulous to have my own shop. I told that to a co-worker who shared with the owner my life goals, and I was terminated. The rest is history.”
16 January/February 2023
Susan had been working another job in McCalla when Kelly came to her with the idea of running the flower shop together.
Kelly was already living in Mt Laurel and had just had her second child, Abby, when she had an opportunity to buy a building for a second location, which was just a few blocks away from her home. According to Susan, the Mt Laurel location was the first commercial building in the town.
Susan and Kelly, along with each of their small staff, personally design each bouquet “in-house.” The staff also creates personalized, custom arrangements and gift baskets. Areas of specialty include fresh flower arrangements, wedding planning, sympathy arrangements, balloon bouquets, fruit and gourmet baskets, green and blooming plants, custom silk arrangements, dried arrangements, orchids and topiary plants. Both locations also offer invitation and paper goods, linen rental and interior decorating services, including table scapes, stemware and place settings. Kelly says their best sellers are seasonal mixes of colorful flowers. Susan says they also sell a lot of lilies, tulips and garden roses.
Both Susan and Kelly agreed that their favorite memories and activities over the years come down to one word: weddings.

Kelly says they do a great deal of wedding planning, where people come in for consultations and go over their visions and dream flowers.
“My fondest memories are doing wedding flowers and sharing in the special memories of friends whose weddings we have done, and all the wonderful people we met along the way,” she says.
Susan says she has especially enjoyed getting to travel for weddings to locations like Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, the Tennessee/Georgia coast and even all the way to San Francisco. They also got to attend a huge wedding at Oak Island Mansion, an 11,000 square-foot mansion on a six-acre island on Lay Lake.
Susan says they have other funny memories “that probably shouldn’t be published.”

“We get a lot of laughs about it. Columbiana is a small town. Sometimes we get calls about flowers that were delivered somewhere, and we can’t give them any information. We’re a business. We just have to deliver and let it go,” Susan says.
On the flip side, they have also shed tears with lots of customers. Working with grieving families is especially hard for both of them. Susan’s son, Jason, (Kelly’s younger brother), along with Susan’s nephew, Ronnie, were killed in a car accident in 2003. They were both 24 years old.
“The worst for me is when I see these people who have lost their young ones,” Susan says. “All you can do is just be there, and cry with them. The Columbiana location is close to a funeral home, so we do a lot of those here. Just today, I have two funerals I’m getting ready for.”
A few things have changed since the beginning. Kelly’s third child, Connor, is now 16, and while they had “no place to play” when her kids were young, she now has a 10-acre farm. Lately, Susan said they have been “kicking around” the idea of opening a new location in Calera.
“Their only florist there closed down a few months ago, and we’ve been doing a lot of deliveries there lately,” Susan says.
Susan says neither she nor Kelly plan on stopping any time soon.
“I doubt we’ll do anything different. It’s a tiring business, but we really do enjoy it,” Susan says. “You’ve got to be dedicated to be a florist.”

If you’re looking for a dose of great art, check out the 2023 Robin Nance Metz Art Competition (RNMAC) gallery opening on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 6-8 p.m. This art competition, formerly known as the annual Adult Juried Art Exhibit, features more medium categories for 2023. The competition was expanded to include work in the categories of drawing, painting, photography, digital art, sculpture, fiber arts, printmaking and fine art crafts. Prizes will be awarded at the gallery’s opening reception for the overall best in show, best in each medium category and two special awards, the SCAC Executive Director’s Choice and the SCAC Staff Choice.
This year’s competition is judged by Birmingham artist Randy Gachet. The name for the art competition was officially changed at the end of 2022 to honor the life
and artistic legacy of local artist Robin Metz. Although Robin lost her battle with cancer in September 2022, the artwork and memories she left behind will never be forgotten. You can still see some of Robin’s popular sun paintings and ceramic works featured on the long running show, CBS Sunday Morning. The RNMAC accepts submissions during autumn each year and is open to all Alabama artists ages 18 years old and up. For artists in grades 10-12, entry to the annual Statewide High School Juried Art Show opens on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Visit shelbycountyartscouncil.com under the “Happenings” tab for the entry form and detailed information, or email lindsay@ shelbycountyartscouncil.com for questions.
If that’s not enough artwork for you, be sure to stop by the Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama exhibit opening on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 2-4 p.m. The annual Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama (HKASA) is a traveling juried art exhibit displayed throughout the state. The show is open to Alabama students who have visual impairments, blindness and/or deaf blindness. The artists are of various ages attending public, private, residential and home schools. This exhibit opens at the SCAC then travels for the year to locations across the state. This event is sponsored by the Shelby County Arts Council, The UAB School of Optometry Vision Science Research Center, Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and private individuals and agencies. A JOYFUL NOISE
Ali Mims, who is the 2022 Miss Shelby County’s Outstanding Teen, is spreading the joy and therapy of music to her hometown and beyond.
BY CARMEN BROWN PHOTOS BY FRANK CARNAGGIO PHOTOGRAPHY & CONTRIBUTED
AAli Mims has been making a joyful noise ever since she can remember. In fact, you could say she was born with joy—literally.
“When my mom was pregnant with me, she was talking to my grandparents about what my middle name would be, and she said, ‘You know what? Her middle name is going to be Joy because she’s going to be joyful,’” Ali says. “And I am. I’m happy all the time.”
A few months later, Alixandra Joy Mims came into the world--specifically Harpersville, Alabama, along with her destiny to bring “joy” to others. Now 15, Ali recounts her story with an energy and enthusiasm that’s the embodiment of her name.
“No one calls me Alixandra except on the first day of school or if there’s a substitute,” she says with a laugh. “But the funny thing is a lot of people at school will just call me Joy.”
Her friends know the name fits. At 6, Ali would go to her grandparents’ house, only two minutes away, and play their piano. She never had any formal lessons, but by the time she was 9, she was playing everything from Beethoven’s “Für Elise” to Bruno Mars and Adele hits. When she was 8, she locked herself in her bedroom after watching America’s Got Talent and learned the words to “O Mio Babbino Caro” in 30 minutes, after which she gave a little singing performance for her mom. These days she can sometimes be seen singing the national anthem at local and regional sporting events.
But hints at the future significance of her middle name had really surfaced much earlier when Ali was just 3.
“I saw a bus outside with kids in it, and I asked my mom what that was. She told me, and I said when I grew up, I wanted to drive a bus for kids with disabilities,” Ali says. “By the time I was in junior high, I knew I wanted to go to college for music therapy.”
As 2022 Miss Shelby County’s Outstanding Teen and now 2023 Miss Tuscaloosa’s Outstanding Teen, Ali has been able to put her

love for helping children with disabilities into action through her platform, “Joyful Noise: Bringing Joy Through Music,” a program in which Ali raises money to purchase instruments for local schools to use for musical education and therapy.
Ali says she’s working with Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Education to incorporate music education with music therapy in all schools.
“Seventy-six percent of Alabama schools in rural areas do not have music education. My goal is to take that 76 down to zero because that’s just unacceptable,” Ali says.
When Ali entered her first preliminary pageant and was asked what she wanted her social impact initiative to be, it only took her five seconds to answer. The name, however, took a little longer. Then she recalled Psalm 100:1-2: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come into His presence with singing.”
“It doesn’t matter how good it is, as long as it’s joyful,” Ali says. “It was a God moment for me. It was like God was saying, ‘Ali, this is what you’re going to do.’”
Ali says she loves how music is a “universal language,” with the ability to connect people from all walks of life. Although she’s a happy person, Ali has been open about her struggles with anxiety and how music has been a great coping mechanism. She wants to show kids the healing power of music.
“The way I like to explain it is when I have anxiety, I get butterflies in my stomach But when I sit down to play the piano, the butterflies fly away,” she says, acknowledging her own love for butterflies and then looking down and lifting up her silver butterfly necklace. “I’m wearing one now,” she says.
Ali has worked with students in more than 20 self-contained classrooms and has volunteered with many organizations, including the Walk to End Epilepsy and the Alabama Veterans Association community, raising more than $130,000 to be used toward music education and therapy in the local area.
As an additional way to raise money for the program, Ali wrote a small children’s book, Make Music with Joy, which was published in October. In the book, Joy shows children how to make their own toy instruments at home. Kids who buy the book from her in person at local events can either receive a complimentary “Joy doll” or a maraca egg shaker. When Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks interviewed her for his podcast, he purchased copies of the book for every music teacher in the county.
“Within two days it hit number three on Amazon for books for children with disabilities,” Ali says. “When my mom told me that, I just cried. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I did that.”
Ali went on to compete in the 2022 Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen where she reprised the Italian opera she sang in her bedroom years before. At 14, she was the youngest contestant to place in the top 10.
Throughout her journey, Ali credits her family with support and being good role models. Her mother, Haley Houston

“I’ve been in the classroom with her, and I’ve seen how much the kids enjoy it,” Ali says.
Ali’s sister, Daley, 20, was involved in show choir and cheerleading, and she also competed in pageants when she was younger. Ali’s other sister, Nora, 4, is already taking gymnastics lessons. Her stepdad, Paul David, also works with children with disabilities at Linda Nolen Learning Center in Shelby County Schools.
Having always been crafty, Ali decided to make Christmas ornaments to sell to raise money to purchase instruments for the Linda Nolen school, while Haley made matching T-shirts for participants to wear at the fundraiser. “I made my own clothes for my American Girl dolls when I was 7,” Ali says.
Ali also recently helped produce the first Joyful Noise Talent Show, where 40 elementary students helped raise thousands of dollars to purchase instruments for patients with special needs at Children’s Harbor.
“They all immediately ran up and started playing,” Ali says. “They got to experience the joy of making music themselves.”

This is all while still navigating life as a sophomore at Chelsea High School, cheerleading, taking dual enrollment classes and leading student ministry activities at her church.
Ali admits it’s a lot to take in for someone who does not yet have her driver’s license.
“My great-grandfather gave me some of the best advice. He said it is so important to stop and take a step back to look at your life. If you don’t take time to slow down and enjoy life, it will pass you by, and you will miss out on the important things,” she says.
For Ali, these are the important things, and she looks back in amazement at what she’s already accomplished in her young life. She remembers when she dressed like Cinderella and sang “When You Wish Upon a Star” at her elementary school talent show. Little did she know how many wishes she would later make come true, not just for herself but for the kids so dear to her.
“Nothing fits me better,” she says. “I want my passion to have a purpose.”

Birmingham local Susan Milner of Susan Milner Design sheds light on picking the perfect bouquets for every wedding season.
By Anna Grace Moore | Photos by AL Weddings, Blair Ramsey &
Eleanor Stenner Photography
After 35 years in the interior design industry and 12 years in the wedding florals business, Susan Milner has seen it all. The beautiful, the intricate and the innately unique are all words that come to mind when describing the bouquets she creates for a bride’s big day.
Susan Milner Design was born through Susan’s volunteer work, planning events and decorating florals for her childrens’ school events such as proms and dinner banquets. A few of the other moms noticed her talent and asked her if she’d consider arranging florals for their own events, including their childrens’ weddings. What started as a side hustle is now one of Birmingham’s premier wedding floral businesses, which actually is but a branch of her own interior design company.
“Doing floral design was a natural extension of my interior design career,” Susan says. “A lot of the same mental tools are used. You need to understand how to work with color, proportions, scale. Those are universal design tools that apply to both fields.”
Susan began designing florals for two to three weddings a year, but now she does near 20 weddings or more a year.
“I have probably done 250 weddings,” Susan says with a laugh. Reflecting back on all of her brides’ nuptials, she’s quick to offer key advice.
“Brides should pick something they will love 20 years [down the road], looking at wedding pictures,” she explains. “To me, one of the biggest things is to try to stay away from trends. Classic, timeless designs are a hallmark of my work. I encourage brides to choose florals that are classic and will stand the test of time.”
One constant in Susan’s work is her dedication to helping a bride’s vision come to fruition on her wedding day. She recalls how the feeling she gets, watching a bride see her bouquet for the first time, is simply magical.
“My ultimate goal is for the bride to just be beyond thrilled with her florals,” Susan adds. “I want to exceed all expectations. I want to create florals that are beautiful, and I want to be proud to put my name on anything. Most importantly, I want the bride to be happy.”
Pure joy is a sentiment that all of Susan’s brides share. Here, Susan offers her take on seasonal florals that contribute to the “wedding bliss feeling.”
Visit susanmilnerdesign.com to start a conversation about the best florals for a bride’s big day.
spring florals
“Soft, airy colors and flowy textures just says, ‘spring,’” Susan explains. “Flowers such as spring bulbs, daffodils, hyacinth and foxglove are all just beautiful hallmarks of spring.” For this season, Susan recommends brides choose soft pastels such as pinks and whites to create a subtle, timeless design in their bouquets.

summer florals
“Peonies are very summery,” Susan says. “You can go one of two ways in summer. You can go with soft pastels with cool whites, ivories and greenery. Or, you can go on the other end of the spectrum and do really hot, vibrant colors like orange and purple.” Whatever a bride chooses, Susan adds that the bouquet should match the aura of the dress. A more traditional silhouette, she believes, should pair with a more modest bouquet shape.
Photos by AL Weddings
flofallrals
“Dahlias are the number one fall flowers that come to mind. They’re only available mid-to-late summer and in the fall. I also use ranunculus throughout the year. They’re fitting for fall,” Susan says. “To me, the richer colors and bringing in natural elements like berries, seed pods and fall greenery are the best inspiration for a fall bouquet.”
Photos by Blair Ramsey

winter florals
As for winter florals, Susan recommends either going with a “cool-white aesthetic” or playing on the season’s colors, such as red and green for Christmas or blue and white for Hanukkah. “I love bringing in wintery greens like pines and cedars,” Susan adds. “The scent can transport you to another place.”

Mary Glenn McElveen’s “how to look book” for dressing your bridal best.
By Anna Grace Moore Photos by Maddie Moore Photo
Growing up in Mountain Brook, Mary Glenn McElveen woke up every morning ready to conquer the day in style. From strutting her high school’s hallways to making statements at social activities, Mary Glenn’s time spent curating her own style has contributed to her reputation as a stylist and tastemaker in her hometown.
“I remember as a little girl playing dress up,” she explains. “It was my creative outlet. Honestly, that hasn’t stopped in my life. Now, everyday style really is a part of who I am today. I feel like this is where I thrive.”
Being fashion forward, she says, has evolved in meaning to her over time. Now, it’s about accentuating her clients’ confidence by helping them feel the most like themselves in what they wear. Why? Because when one feels like a more “elevated” version of herself, she stands a little taller, walks more confidently and acts with purpose.
After graduating from Mountain Brook High School, Mary Glenn attended the University of Alabama, eventually earning a degree in marketing. Through her classes she learned the importance of selling her talents, whether this was through social media or the way she presented herself in fashion and design. This prompted her to spend the next few years styling houses and curating her taste inside the closet and throughout the home.
Around this time, girls that Mary Glenn had been helping style since they were high schoolers started getting engaged and needing Mary Glenn’s help for life’s more memorable moments. This sparked the realization that her clients and community had styling needs that she could meet more full-time.
“With my background being in the design world, [I formed] a lot of client-based relationships,” she says. “I’ve always been able to connect with people, really understanding their needs.”
This simple request soon snowballed into what is now Mary Glenn’s own business, M.G. Style. Boasting more than 35,000 Instagram followers, M.G. Style is one of Birmingham and the greater area’s premier styling companies. Mary Glenn focuses on dressing clients for travels, galas, everyday “looks” and more.
Here, with wedding fever in the air, Mary Glenn offers her expertise in how to dress a bride for her anticipated wedding festivities.

Engagement Photo Shoot
Bachelorette Trip
42 January/February 2023
Mary Glenn loves the movement of the skirt and the sweater together because it creates a very relaxed look. The outfit isn’t boring, but it isn’t too “loud,” either. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.
Adding color for a bachelorette trip is really fun. Brides are already going to be wearing white for all of their other events, so this is something that can be restyled for a honeymoon. Sourced locally from Effie’s.
The Little, Black Dress
Engagement Party
The off-the-shoulder silhouette and flared pants complement one another well. The outfit is not as formal but still classy and elegant enough for an upscale evening. The neckline alludes to a sophisticated nature about the outfit; whereas, the pants add more of a casual flair. Fun fact: Mary Glenn actually helped design this handbag which is named, the “M.G.” The bag is from a collaboration with the handbag line, J. LOWERY. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.

This faux leather dress Mary Glenn has already worn to an office party, a dinner and more. The fabric and kneelength hem makes this dress versatile, which adds for another non-white option to add to a bride’s closet. This style is great for grabbing drinks with friends, perusing wedding venues, shopping for bridesmaid gifts and other wedding excursions. It is a “day to night” kind of dress. Sourced locally from Tulipano Boutique.
Bridesmaids’ Luncheon
This modest, cute go-to outfit is perfect for a light lunch with the gals to celebrate a bride’s nuptials. The light material and length is appropriate for the warmer seasons, which is significant, considering the events in which this dress can be reworn. Think church services, graduations, Mother’s Day and other events. Sourced locally from Effie’s.
Rehearsal Dinner
44 January/February 2023
This elevated but simple outfit is great for the bride’s shining moment, walking down the aisle for the first time during the rehearsal. This glam also pairs nicely for dinner afterwards as it is a little understated but still contributes to the “wow” moment guests feel, gazing at the bride’s beauty. Sourced locally from Effie’s.
Getting Ready for “The Big Day”
This elegant, silk caftan is customizable and able to be reworn around the home or out and about on the town. The fabric easily transforms to makeshift for a sophisticated allure. Sourced locally from Heezie’s.

Bridesmaid Gifts
BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY MADDIE SULLIVAN PHOTO
The perfect bridesmaid gift is one with sentimental value. The best are often those with a hand-written note, detailing how thankful the bride is for the commitment her bridesmaids made to achieve the bride’s wedding dreams.
If you’re a bride and don’t know where to start, consider putting your thoughts on paper first. Express your love and thankfulness to each bridesmaid individually. No one likes a generic note. Next, think of the aesthetic of your wedding. Are you going for shabby-chic or more of a classic, timeless vibe? Your gifts will want to reflect your desired aesthetic and complement the color palette and theme you choose.
Here are a few things brides should consider when creating their bridesmaid gifts.
DON’T FORGET THE WINE!
If you or your bridesmaids prefer non-alcoholic beverages, sodas, teas and lemonade make the perfect substitute. Small wine bottles with bridesmaid stickers are small enough to fit in a tote or handbag but sentimental enough because the bride can pair them with a sweet note.
HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR GIFTS TO LOOK?
One of the most important parts of any bridesmaid gift is the “look.” Your friends will feel honored that you asked them to be in your wedding. While the gift is a nice gesture, the pictures of the gifts last forever. The packaging, wrapping, ribbon, color scheme and trinkets inside all should match to stand out. Pictured is a gift by Ami À Vie, which is owned and operated by Maggie Hightower.
WHAT CAN YOU PACKAGE, GIFT AND SHIP?
Often, brides think of innately-decorated chocolates and cookies to add to their bridesmaid gifts. These are cute, but if you’re shipping your gifts especially to your out-of-town friends, you’re going to want to use non-perishable items. But, for friends near home, edible croissants with fruit or neat pastries are a sweet and inexpensive way to thank your friends who’re standing by your side.
Your bridesmaids stand by you on one of the most important days of your life. Here’s a guide as to how to thank them.
THINK OF GIFTS THAT CAN BE REUSED IN THE FUTURE. Another great gift is one in which can be used again and again. Wedding koozies, hats and sunglasses are gifts that bridesmaids can use for the bachelorette trip! Finding ways to cut down on expenses without having to sacrifice style is important for every bridal party.
WHERE ARE YOU GIVING YOUR BRIDESMAIDS THEIR GIFTS? Location, location, location! The area that you’re gifting your bridesmaid gifts is an essential part of the friendly gesture. Some brides choose to mail them, but for those wanting an in-person feel, consider this: gift your bridesmaids their gifts at a place that you all can celebrate. A bridesmaids’ luncheon, an engagement party and even a bachelorette trip are all perfect occasions to give your gifts. A poolside retreat, for example, is a great location to give your bridesmaids something they’ll love. Everyone will be enjoying the pool party, and your bridesmaids will get something to take home, too!

THE PROPOSAL
Blayze proposed on December 4, 2020, at the place we first met, Westwood Baptist Church! I had a feeling I would know when Blayze was getting ready to propose. He usually cannot keep things from me, and I figured it would be written all over my family’s faces, but I was so wrong. I had zero clue what was going on the entire day. On that day, Blayze told me we needed to run by the church to pick up lesson plans for youth. When we got inside the church, Blayze asked to take a selfie in front of the Christmas tree. He went around the back to plug it in and sneakily picked up the hidden ring box. We took our selfie, and I turned around, looking at the tree (still thinking we were waiting to pick up lesson plans) and saw a gold ornament with my initials on it. Blayze told me to look at the ornament and when I turned it around, it said, “Will you marry me?” It was the most surreal moment of my life. Blayze told me he wanted to bring me back to the place we met and where we’ve grown together in our relationship with Christ. He asked me to marry him and I said yes, yes, yes!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
There were so many special moments! One of my favorites was surprising Blayze with Cam Cummings to play our first dance song live. Cam wrote the song we danced to (“What Happens Next”), and it was so special to surprise him! The look on Blayze’s face was everything!
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
One of my favorite details was our wedding stationary. I really wanted it to be elegant. Another detail I loved was my mother-in-law’s bouquet. She was supposed to have longstemmed calla lilies for her wedding day but got day lilies instead. I wanted to give her an opportunity to carry calla lilies down the aisle, so her bouquet had calla lilies! It was beautiful!

THE PROPOSAL
Logan proposed on May 15, 2021. It was the week before my birthday, so he told me he had made dinner plans at one of our favorite restaurants and sent me to get a manicure with a friend. That evening I got all dolled up, but on the way to dinner, we got a call from two of our friends that their vehicle was broken down on their family’s farm during a photography session. Logan was the only one who answered the phone to help. When we walked up to “rescue” our friends, a beautiful picnic was set out on the rug Logan had gifted me when we started dating. He asked me to be his wife and, of course, I said yes!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Music has always been an important part of our relationship, so I knew that the song I walked down the aisle to should be unique and special. I also knew that I wanted it to be a surprise to Logan. One of my favorite moments during the day was walking down the aisle to a Pink Floyd song and seeing Logan’s face when he saw me for the first time. The choice was nontraditional, but one that we both cherish.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
During the planning process, we really focused on details that felt like “us.” For the ceremony, I wore the dress that my mother was married in. It was such a special moment to share that dress with her. We released butterflies during the ceremony in honor of my grandmother who passed away. She was such an important part of my life, so it meant a great deal to my family to honor her in that way. She often referred to people as “sweet pea,” so my aunt grew a special type of sweet pea flower for me that we placed all over the ceremony space. It was such an exciting process to watch her grow those flowers, leading up to the wedding. So many family members helped make our day special.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met through mutual friends about 10 years ago during football season in 2012. We just hung out and never even exchanged numbers. About three years later, he came into where I worked as a waitress and told his friend he was going to marry me one day (still not having my number). After a few months, he finally got in touch with me and has never left me alone since. He asked me to be his girlfriend in December of that year (2015).
THE PROPOSAL
We go on a beach trip to Fort Morgan, Alabama, with the family every year. This was my sixth year going. We went on a morning walk after breakfast every day, and nothing seemed any different other than everyone (and I mean everyone) making sure I went to use the restroom before we left. We went on our walk and about halfway in, it started pouring rain! After finally realizing the rain was not easing up, I took a run for it and when I did, Will didn’t run with me. Confused, I turned around and saw him on one knee, asking to marry me.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
My favorite moment had to be walking down the aisle. I made it a point not to see Will the whole day, and he made it his mission to not see me, either. As I prepared to walk down the aisle, my stomach was in knots. My eyes were fighting back tears. It was the most comforting thing, knowing he was at the end of the aisle. Once he saw me, and I saw him, everything went away. It was like he and I were the only two there. It was the most amazing moment of my life.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
Everything was perfect to the “T.” Honestly, my favorite details were just the simplicity and beauty of the 4-H center. It was absolutely stunning. The nature aspect of it all to the trees being our main backdrop to the chapel having the beautiful rock structure was gorgeous.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Jacob and I are both from Columbiana, and we both went to Shelby County High School. However, we didn’t meet until several years later when we were both in college at Auburn University. One night, some high school friends came to town to visit. We all met up, and the rest is history!
THE PROPOSAL
Jacob and I were in Orange Beach, Alabama. He took me out for a walk on the beach, just the two of us. He stopped in the middle of our walk and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Our band put on an amazing show. They got us both up on the stage towards the end of the night, and we had so much fun interacting with them and all of our family and friends.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
The floral arch was stunning and made the perfect backdrop for photos for us and our guests. The shrimp and grits were a delicious hit. We had an Auburn-themed groom’s cake since we both graduated from Auburn. That was so fun!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met the old-fashion way on Hinge. My friends set up my Hinge profile in hopes that I’d finally agree to go on a date with someone. I matched with Spencer and noticed that we had mutual friends. We started texting, and I forgot to answer him…for three months. I finally texted him back, after looking through my phone and seeing that I hadn’t. He asked me to dinner. He drove to our first date with a shattered windshield because he “didn’t want to wait another three months.”
THE PROPOSAL
I “knew” he wasn’t proposing because my family and friends were out of town. So, we went to our typical weekend hangout spot, the Grocery, before heading to dinner with some friends. Spencer said, “Let’s go out back,” which if you know the Grocerythat’s weird, and before I could even respond, he was on his way out there. We sat down out back, and he asked, “Remember the last time we sat at this table?” I of course remembered that’s where we shared our first kiss. I turned to look at him, and he was on one knee!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Our favorite moment from our wedding was being surrounded by all of the people we love. Our friends and family really made us feel so loved and celebrated. Also, my onstage performance singing Lizzo was a crowd favorite.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
I’ll say having our family friend sing the father daughter dance song. Having “both dads” a part of that moment was special. Also, my grandmother, who was battling Alzheimer’s, couldn’t be there. I surprised my sister and mom and had rings made for them out of the cameo earrings she had given me. It was a special thing, getting to look down and be reminded of her throughout the day. Together, our favorite detail was our specialty drink menu, which included our favorite drinks named after our two dogs, Harry and Lola.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO EDUCATE
Evangel Classical Christian School (ECCS), a ministry of Evangel Presbyterian Church (PCA) and located in Alabaster, Alabama, provides a unique approach to education that seeks to develop leaders who are equipped to transform the culture for Christ. All ECCS classes are taught through the lens of Scripture to support an integrated Christian worldview and to shape students’ minds as well as hearts. Students are not expected only to memorize facts for tests, but they are also encouraged and taught to think critically and logically about the world around them and to apply what they are learning to benefit themselves and others.
Evangel seeks to partner with parents to prepare students for their lives through a unique, three-
phased approach to their education that includes the schools of Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. Designed with a child’s developmental stages in mind, Grammar School is grades K3 through 5th, Logic is 6th through 8th, and Rhetoric is 9th through 12th. Subjects are not approached as individual disciplines, but rather as a holistic way to look for God, His work, His purpose, and His glory in all creation and through all that they are studying. The classical approach to learning helps build the foundation for students to express themselves thoughtfully to reflect truth with precision, conviction, and clarity.

and intellectually can find a perfect fit at ECCS. “Classical education is, I think, the only educational system that really gives kids something beautiful to want,” Julie McGuffey, a Rhetoric school faculty member said, “because I want them to love the God who created them and who created all of these subjects.” The “something beautiful” that Mrs. McGuffey speaks about is a love of learning that is fostered by a sincere love of God, His creation, and His will for their lives, for “in Christ, all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17).
Students are not only prepared to have a successful career in college and in the workforce, but they are also guided as a whole person, educated to pursue a life glorifying to God. The school aims for each child to flourish in wisdom, courage,
justice, self-control, faith, hope, and love. Bible classes at every grade level and chapel services further promote spiritual maturity. Student life is also an integral part of ECCS. With clubs like drama and scholar’s bowl, athletics, and a unique house system, students have many options to be involved in various activities.
Ultimately, ECCS seeks to glorify God by shaping the hearts and minds of covenant children through a distinctively classical and unapologetically Christian education with the goal of raising up ambassadors for Christ. If you value a partnership with a school that provides a classical Christian education, then you should consider Evangel Classical Christian School. THE PROPOSAL
Matt proposed at George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon just outside of Washington, D.C. He popped the question under a large tree with the mansion on one side and the Potomac River on the other. It was a beautiful, uncharacteristically warm and sunny day for December. We love knowing that our love story is tied to such a special place for our country’s founding. Given that we met in D.C. and created many memories there while we were dating, it was the perfect choice.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Being introduced at the reception and walking out to greet all of our guests for the first time was one of my favorite moments. It was so special to see all of our family and friends together in one place. We did a champagne tower pour as part of our introduction, which was super fun and also got our guests excited. It was energizing to be cheered on by all of our family and friends. We had “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” by Natalie Cole playing in the background, which was a great way to set the classic tone for our wedding.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
We wanted a grand feel to our wedding, which is why we chose the ballroom at the Grand Bohemian. I loved all of the details that we added to the ballroom to make it even more grand like candelabras, gold chargers and flatware, tall statement flower arrangements and a six-foot-tall cake! We also had white trees throughout the ballroom, which created a magical feel. My favorite detail of all, though, would have to be the cold sparks which we used in our first dance, the first song that the band played and our exit. They were so fun for us and our guests and really helped to create the grand atmosphere that we were looking for.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met on Twitter of all places. We were just friends for about four years before I came to Birmingham to meet Mason in March 2017. I stayed to watch Mason play baseball. After getting to know each other better, we both knew that we wanted a relationship.
THE PROPOSAL
We got engaged in Nashville on February 25, 2022. A week before we left, I felt like something was coming, but I wasn’t sure. One night Mason and I were sitting on the couch, and my mom called Mason. Mason got up and walked into the guest room, talking about how the weather was fine and totally making up a conversation. I gave Mason the biggest grin when they got off the phone. Mason quickly went into cover-up mode, saying we were not getting engaged in Nashville. We were just going for the Preds game and to have a good time. We went on a date night downtown, and our first stop was the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge. We were the only ones on the bridge besides the photographer. Mason got down on one knee and popped the question in the same spot we were in a few months earlier!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
My favorite moment of the whole day was the first look. We did a private first look and exchanged our personal vows together. These were some of our only solo moments throughout the day, and we shared a few good laughs and sentimental tears.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
We really enjoyed getting ready at Lay Lake. That opportunity gave us the best of both worlds with indoor and outdoor pictures. We also enjoyed putting our unity cross together. This symbolizes the foundation of our marriage is centered around Christ, and it is a symbol that we can carry with us and is now on our mantle.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met while we were students at Oak Mountain Middle School. Our school had an annual expo carnival, and we met while in line for ride.
THE PROPOSAL
He proposed on the beach the day we took our daughter to see the ocean for the first time. Pensacola Beach is a very special place to us. We grew up together and have known each other since middle school. We grew apart, but when we reconnected and started dating, we found out his mom and my dad had both moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida, and lived one street over from each other. It’s like every sign in the world kept bringing us back together.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
There are so many to choose from. One of the funniest moments was my brother agreed to get in the dunking booth. I assured him I probably wouldn’t hit it, but I dunked him on the first throw. We also had a fire show that was unbelievable. Our guests and us had so much fun watching. It exceeded all expectations!
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
Since we met at our middle school carnival, the wedding had a complete carnival theme. We had candy apples custom made for our guests, a funnel cake station, a fresh popcorn machine, a candy bar and cotton candy for our guests to take home. One of my favorite parts was Haley of Haley Vaughn Art painting our first dance live at the reception. The kids loved the games and bounce house, but the biggest hit was the gold fish toss, complete with gold fish for the kids to take home.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Will’s brother actually started dating my cousin. They thought that we would get along well and introduced us when I was 15 and he was 17 years old. Things didn’t work out then, but we reconnected at 18 and 20 years old.
THE PROPOSAL
In December 2021 I had a feeling that Will was going to propose around Christmas. During the first week of December, all of my friends started talking about my nails, and I caught on even more. His family Christmas was the first weekend of the month, so I assumed it was happening there. He found out I had caught on and caught me completely off guard. I got my nails done Thursday night after work, expecting the proposal on Saturday. We went out to look at Christmas lights with friends after my nail appointment, and he ended up asking me to marry him under the mistletoe in the walk-through Christmas light display.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Will is a drummer in a band called Chris Beverly Experience. Chris actually wrote our first dance song. This means no one has ever had, nor will ever have, the same first dance song as us. He wrote it specifically for and about us. We had also never heard it before we walked to the dance floor. It was so beautiful to hear it for the first time.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
Everything was done by someone close to us. My grandfather is a pastor and got to get up and pray over us. It was beautiful. The all-black bridal party was also a gorgeous detail.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Matthew and I met in middle school through mutual friends. We became good friends and always stayed in touch. On October 21, 2015, we started dating. Matthew was a sophomore in high school, and I was a junior. We have been together ever since high school!
THE PROPOSAL
It was May 2021. I had just graduated college and secured my career job. We planned a date night, going out to eat at P.F. Chang’s to celebrate. When we were on the way to go eat, Matthew got a call from his mom, asking if we wanted to come take pictures with his family since two of them had also graduated college. To throw me off, Matthew sounded uninterested, and I thought I was talking him into going to take family pictures. After dinner we arrived at a church in Vestavia to take pictures, walked around and found his mom, sister and best friend. We turned the corner, and it was decorated with pictures of Matthew and me, along with rose petals. Matthew asked me to marry him, and it was a day I’ll never forget!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
My favorite moment during the wedding was our first look. We had our family and friends watching from the balcony of the venue, and we were down by the lake. This was such an intimate and special part of our day. We read our vows and reflected on our relationship and how excited we were for the future.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
I had my mom’s wedding dress made into a robe that I wore while getting ready. This was so special to me, and something I can keep and wear forever! Our departure was in a beautifully decorated boat which was a perfect way to end our special day. We had a moment to ourselves to reflect on our big day and ride around on a peaceful lake.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Mitchell and I originally met in high school and actually dated for a few months when we were 16! We stayed close friends throughout the rest of high school, even after he changed schools junior year. We connected again during our freshman year of college. I was at Auburn, and he was at UAB. I came home one weekend to see him when he broke his arm (I’m pretty sure he just broke it, so I would come home and go on a date with him). The rest is history!
THE PROPOSAL
Mitchell took me on a planned “date night” and told me we were starting the night by visiting this beautiful venue for us to check out “some day when we decide to get married.” When we pulled up to the “venue,” there wasn’t actually a venue but a beautiful lot overlooking a lake. He walked me out by the lake and told me how much he loved me and how he has loved me since we were 16. He told me that he couldn’t imagine spending the rest of his life with anyone else and that he didn’t want me to be his girlfriend anymore. He wanted me to be his wife!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
My favorite moment during our wedding was actually the morning of our wedding. Mitchell and I woke up and exchanged gifts privately and then drank coffee together as we took a walk down to the lake at our venue. We spent the morning talking about our future and how surreal it was that we made it to our wedding day already.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
My favorite details from our wedding day were our flowers! Our florist made my bouquet dream come to life. It was so beautiful and everything I dreamed of. We also chose to do a cupcake selection for the groom instead of a cake. Everyone loved them and so did we! They also made for a great late-night snack.

Spring Retreats
By Christiana Roussel | Photos contributed Lake, Mountains, Beach
There is nothing like a big event – a wedding, a reunion, an anniversary - to inspire a fun getaway.
This spring, we are celebrating weddings and anniversaries, graduations and milestones achieved. And if we are honest, there is so much work that goes into planning these big events. It can feel like we’ve run a race when we finally get here. After all, what mother-of-the-bride hasn’t wished for her own weeklong-honeymoon-style getaway after helping to execute her daughter’s dream wedding? And to be sure, before we even get to the big celebrations, there are lots of smaller ones along the way: bridesmaids trips, groomsmen getaways, planning excursions and site visits for parties. We’ve selected three of our favorite locations which might just fit the bill for anything you have planned this spring. With destinations at the lake, the beach and in the mountains, there is a little something for everyone. Of course, you might just have to hit all three. They’re all very special!

HIT THE ROAD
A Little Something for Everyone
An Active Retreat
Just a short drive on I-20 from Birmingham, Reynolds Lake Oconee has been drawing Magic City visitors for years. Long known for its exceptional golf program and stunning setting on Lake Oconee, this Ritz-Carlton resort has something for everyone. The five-story property has rooms and suites of various sizes to accommodate a variety of guests, but larger parties may choose to book one of the six separate cottages that front the lake itself. Imagine settling in with your best girlfriends for a weekend of wedding planning and spa visits. For those who live, eat and breathe the pursuit of that small, white ball, there are four other suites which overlook The Oconee Golf Course, one of six world-class courses on property.
Lake: Reynolds Lake Oconee Greensboro, Georgia
Ready, Aim, Shoot!
Beyond spa and golf, Reynolds Lake Oconee has expanded its recreational offerings to include tri-toon boat rentals, water skis, Jet Ski, paddle boarding, wakeboarding and canoe rentals. One of the more recent additions to this property is Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, which is nestled into 100-acres of pristine East Georgia countryside. Great Britain’s internationally-acclaimed shooting champion Justin Jones and his team have worked tirelessly to develop the property and make it a luxurious, world-class shooting destination. Sandy Creek features a 20-station sporting clays course, five-stand shooting range and sporting clays. Women make up the fastest-growing sector of the shooting market, so even if you’ve never picked up a 20-gauge shotgun before, we challenge you to try your hand at this sport. It is thrilling!
Fine Dining
Of course, no getaway would be complete without great food, and this is one more way Reynolds Lake Oconee shines. There are a number of on-site restaurants that can be intimate respites for two, or host a large group of revelers. Book one of the cottages, and you can have chef-driven meals brought to your own private domain and never lift a finger.

Make It Permanent
Once your celebration or honeymoon has ended, you may find yourself not wanting to leave Reynolds. That is just the way they like it! Recent years have seen a huge rise in permanent relocation to the area where homesites have been selling like hotcakes. The development of the residential side of Lake Oconee has been one founded upon intention and authentic hospitality like no other. There is character and community here that has drawn new full-time residents who cherish being active and being taken care of in a naturally-wondrous setting. You may come for a weekend but end up staying for a lifetime.

Mountaintop Escape
Retreat in the Peaks
Located in the heart of Western North Carolina, The Swag is a storied property with a history of hospitality and a warm embrace of its environs. First established as the private retreat for Deener and Dan Matthews and their friends and family, The Swag is named for that part of the landscape where two mountains come together. That physical act of coming together is the foundation for what this property is all about.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Let’s start by saying this: take note of the temperature gauge on your car when you first turn onto The Swag’s driveway. As you make the 15-minute drive up the mountain, crossing the terrain on switchbacks, you can watch the temperature drop degree-by-degree. Better yet, just roll down the windows and let that fresh mountain air erase whatever cares you may have inadver-

tently brought along on this getaway. We promise that by the time you arrive at the welcome reception area, your breathing will become deeper and your smile will become wider.
Next-Gen Caretakers
As only the second stewards of this property, Annie and David Colquitt –themselves long time guests at The Swag before purchasing the property – built this welcome area as a way to set the tone for what is to come.
Get Out There
Atop the mountain lies the main guest lodge where you’ll gather each afternoon for a pre-prandial cocktail or enjoy a repast with other guests. Just across the driveway of the 250-acre property is a long, seemingly endless,

rustic wooden fence which is all that separates guests from the wonder of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Pause for a moment to take in the chatter of woodland life, feel the cool and earthy breeze that comes whispering through the centuries-old growth. This may be just the setting you desire for a honeymoon or a relaxed couples retreat.
Feeling Cozy Rooms are available in the lodge’s main Swag House, where Deener and Dan once had rooms for each of their children to come and visit. These are spacious mountaintop rooms with truly elegant amenities not often found at this altitude. One of the most coveted rooms might be the one with the large copper tub on the porch. Picture yourself taking in the moonrise, enveloped in and sipping on bubbles. Adjacent Chestnut Lodge features five other spaces while seven cabins and suites across the property provide truly intimate privacy. The Balsam Cottage is one of our personal favorites with fireplaces, a sauna, an outdoor shower and soaking tub, beckoning you after a long hike.
The Great Smokies Daytime on the mountain is your time – hours to explore the GSMNP on foot, with or without a guide, like one of the experts-in-residence who have been coming to the property for years. You may choose to amble down the lawn to one of the nooks tucked into the rhododendron-lined hillside, taking along the lunch that the kitchen made for you this morning. Or, stake your claim on a rocking chair on the porch, cracking open a new hardback, losing count of all the hummingbirds that also call The Swag home.
More To Do
The Colquitts recognized and relished the respite of The Swag, having been guests and friends of the Matthews for so many years. But, in taking the reins of ownership, they have endeavored to add even more luxury to the mountaintop: adding a spa, fitness center, wine and cocktail tastings, as well as a soaking pool with breathtaking views of the area. Tours of the garden on site are rounded out with cocktail-crafting classes where guests are invited to try their hand at mixology. Stave puzzles have always been standard fireside entertainment here and continue to be a cherished afternoon activity. theswag.com

A Hotel with a Romantic Past
Sugar White Sands
For some, there is no getaway like a beach getaway. We get that. For those folks, we suggest something different than your typical 30-A trip: The Hotel Don CeSar in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also known as The Pink Palace, this grand hotel sits majestically on the sugar-white sands of St. Pete, just a short drive from the Tampa airport.
Pink Palace History
The Don (as it is also known) enjoys a rich romantic past that is honored still today. Real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe built the resort in the height of the Great Gatsby era of 1928, as a tribute to the love of his life. The property attracted a number of notable guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself and was quite the destination in its heyday before Rowe’s untimely death in 1940. Two years later, the United States Army purchased the property and used it as a place for returning WWII injured airmen to convalesce. After that, the hotel languished for several years before a group of investors lovingly brought it back to life.
Beach: Hotel Don CeSar St. Petersburg, Florida
Revelers Welcomed
Now a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America, much of the era’s panache can be felt in every corner of the hotel – from the vaulted ceilings of the marble-clad lobby to the wide breezeways to the guest rooms that feel very nautical in detail. There are grand ballrooms for large parties and sweeping vistas that recall that bygone era of grandeur. The hotel hosts weddings year-round where the Pink Palace feels like a de facto member of the party. While the hotel’s spa and idyllic beach setting are enough to keep guests on property, it would be a shame to miss some of the other fun things to do in the area.
Dreamland
In fact, take a page from New York Times’ best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, who set his most recent romantic novel, Dreamland, at the Don CeSar, a site he visits yearly and has great affection for. The main characters of the novel, Morgan and Colby, engage all of St. Pete as the backdrop to their own love story – kayaking in clear-bottomed boats amongst the mangroves and spending stretches of time at the acclaimed Salvador Dali museum – which might just inspire a little romance of your own. doncesar.com

MY SHELBY COUNTY
LINDSAY DYESS
Shelby County Arts Council Director of Arts and Education
Relighting the Fire Montevallo’s Artist in Residence Program
Over the summer I had the chance to participate in an Artist in Residence program at my alma mater, the University of Montevallo. I was able to return to the place that really shaped me as an artist. I think it’s important to keep learning and growing as we get older. Life can get busy, and we often put our passions to the side. This residency really lit a fire within me. I was able to have the space and time to create work I was really excited about. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m so grateful for it.
A Beautiful Community
Local Art Festivals
Art in Living Color
“Color + Sound”
In July I had the pleasure of curating and participating in an art exhibit at the Shelby County Arts Council called, “Color + Sound.” This was a tactile art exhibit, featuring five Alabama artists and one musician. It was geared towards visitors who are blind or have low vision. This was a unique experience because visitors were allowed and encouraged to touch all of the art. People experience art in many different ways, and I believe it is important to make sure it is accessible to everyone.
Perusing around Town
Strand Coffee House and Leaders’ Corner
I love going to local coffee shops! Mom-and-pop shops are a vital part of the community, so I always look for one to support. My current favorites are Strand Coffee House in Montevallo, and Leaders’ Corner in Columbiana. Strand has such a unique atmosphere since it’s housed in an old movie theater, and Leaders’ Corner serves up a delicious lunch to go with an afternoon cup of coffee.
Art is for Everyone
Arc of Shelby County
When I was in college I remember thinking, “Whatever I do with my career, I want to make sure that artists always have opportunities to create, and art is accessible to everyone.” It has been such a great honor to work for the Shelby County Arts Council for more than nine years. I have seen artists thrive when they have the opportunity to create. One of my favorite programs we most recently started was providing art classes for adults with developmental disabilities in partnership with the Arc of Shelby County. Just seeing these students’ joy when they’re creating makes the job worth it!
On the weekends I enjoy attending art festivals and even participating in some of them. Some of my favorites are the Montevallo Arts Walk, the Montevallo Arts Fest and the Shelby County Arts Council’s Artist Market. I like hunting for unique works of art and selling my work to people. It’s a great way to interact with local artists and meet people in the community.
