ON THE COVER

Allie & Dean

Nine months after our son’s birth, Justin and I journeyed to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with my family to honor my late father’s memory and scatter his ashes in the city he loved so much. Ironically, this happened to be the second year in a row that my family embarked on this trip to honor my father while also having forgotten to bring my “father” along. About two hours into our five-hour-long trip, my mother realized we left my father–again–and quickly thought of a coverup story. She asked Justin when he was planning to propose. Keep in mind, my mother is as straightforward as the stairwell to heaven. Justin, however, came prepared with the ring he secretly purchased several months earlier and took this trip as an opportunity to open a new chapter in our lives. My mother, sister, Aunt Mary Catherine “MC,” Jacob, Justin and I decided to venture up to the top of Anakeesta–one of the tallest points in the city–to admire the view. Several hours of raging postpartum mood swings and hot flashes later, I decided I was done for the day and was going back to the cabin. Without missing a beat, Aunt MC told me she was going to buy me new shoes, so that my feet wouldn’t hurt, and I would continue the hike. Before I could object, she sprinted to the nearest boutique and bought the first pair of cute flats she could find. Sheepishly, I thanked her graciously and wore my new shoes the rest of the trip. When we finally arrived at Heart Twigloo at Vista Gardens, I actually said, “Hey, this would be a great place to propose.” Little did I know how accurate I actually was. Justin and I waited our turn to get a picture taken and right as I turned to look at the view, he dropped to one knee and asked me the question I’d dreamt of hearing most all of my life. I was so surprised that when I finally blurted out my answer, I accidentally gave my right hand instead of my left for Justin to slide my “ring by spring” onto my finger. This proposal that my family all helped pull off will forever be my second favorite surprise–only after my tiny, blond-haired little boy, who is currently singing a remix of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and “Jesus Loves Me” as I’m writing to you all. In this issue, you all will read about Shelby Living’s 10 featured couples and their love stories. No matter how intricate or cliche, each story is unique, and what I hope will renew in you all a fondness for adventuring in love. Love on, readers!

“ ” THE QUESTION

How did your spouse propose? I faked being chased by the police and ran to my friend’s house, while she was in the car. When I ran to the house, all of our friends were there waiting.

My hubby came to read to my kindergarten class and had written his own story. He knew how much my students meant to me, so he proposed to me in front of my kids!

He took me skydiving. There was a “Will You Marry Me?” banner at the bottom with him on one knee.

My parents have passed away, and when we went to visit their graveside, he proposed! He said he needed to get their blessing first.

After dating for a year and a half in high school, he popped the question in the car before we walked into our senior prom. Still married 31 years later!

One night he called me and said, “I think I am going to get married.” I said, “To who?” He said, “You, if you’ll have me.” We recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary.

He mailed a ring home while he was on the USS Nicholson (DD-982) during the Persian Gulf War. I was back home in Georgia. He asked me to marry him over the American Red Cross.

One of my cousins trains penguins to walk down the aisle at weddings with wedding rings. My husband arranged for a penguin to carry a sign, and he snuck up behind me.

TRUTH IN VIVID COLOR Hailey Mason is honoring heroes of color through her new children’s book series. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY THE PLUS EXPERIENCE & CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

14 January/February 2024

J

Just as sunshine may never be appreciated without cloudy days, one may never fathom the depth of love until she has experienced grieving the loss of a loved one. At only age 4, Shelby County resident and author Hailey Mason was sleeping inside her home peacefully when an unknown assailant shot and killed her mother on their doorstep. Hailey’s mother, Tinisha Malone, was only 25 years old when she was killed. It has been 19 years since her death, and no arrests have been made in solving her murder. Hailey says this cold case is almost as old as she is. Although it is infuriating that Tinisha has not received justice, Hailey vows to keep her mother’s memory alive by honoring heroes of color like her. Tinisha was working as an instructional aide at a local elementary school before she passed, teaching a love of learning not only in her students’ hearts, but also in her own children’s hearts, too. Hailey says it was her mother who first instilled in her a fondness for reading and storytelling–a talent she has cultivated throughout her life. After graduating from John Carroll Catholic High School, Hailey attended Georgia State University for a year before transferring to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Hailey says she waited nearly her whole childhood to “get out of Birmingham” because she hated living so close to where her mother’s life was so brutally taken away. UAB offered her a great scholarship, and reluctantly, Hailey accepted and moved back home. Although she started out majoring in English, Hailey graduated with her bachelor’s in journalism and a double minor in both marketing and African American studies. While moving back home was difficult, Hailey says she learned to see her transition as an opportunity to tell her mother’s story. “I am a reflection of my mom,” Hailey says. “Coming back to Birmingham felt like justice for my mom and allowed me to continue the work she wasn’t able to carry out because of her early demise.” Hailey’s first job out of college was at Alabama

Goodwill, where she actually organized the first Black History Month program at the location where she worked. While promoting the program, Hailey learned Dr. Richard Arrington Jr., the city of Birmingham’s first African American mayor, was also Alabama Goodwill’s first-ever African American board member. This sparked an interest in her to learn more about Birmingham’s history. Monikers such as “bombingham” have long stained the city red. Civil Rights activists even put off marching in Birmingham for some time before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. decided to bring the movement here. The more Hailey read about just how long it took for Birmingham to desegregate, the more impressed she became, learning about the rise of Dr. Arrington–who was elected as Birmingham’s mayor in 1979 and served for four terms (a total of 20 years in office). According to alaafricanamerican.com, Dr. Arrington was born to sharecroppers Richard and Mary Ernestine Arrington on Oct. 19, 1934. He lived in Livingston, Alabama, before moving to Fairfield–where he graduated with honors from Fairfield Industrial High School at just 16 years old. Dr. Arrington went on to attend Miles College, where he earned his bachelor’s in biology. Dr. Arrington did not stop there, however. He earned his master’s in biology from the University of Detroit; his Ph.D in zoology from the University of Oklahoma; and he completed 16 January/February 2024

Coming back to Birmingham felt like justice for my mom and allowed me to continue the work she wasn’t able to carry out because of her early demise. -Hailey Mason postdoctoral work in higher education administration at Harvard University and the University of Michigan. With a love for learning, Dr. Arrington worked hard to become a National Science Foundation Research Fellow at the Medical College of the State University of Iowa and Washington University. Since then, he has received honorary doctoral degrees from eight different universities. Just one year after President Johnson signed the Voting Act of 1965, Dr. Arrington returned to his grassroots at Miles College, where he served as the chairman of the Science Department and Academic Dean until 1970. Then for the next nine years, he served as the executive director of the Alabama Center for Higher Education–the entity embodying the four-year, Alabama-based, Historically Black colleges or universities. Dr. Arrington’s pursuit of higher education and

his dream to make such attainable for people of color in lower-income communities is really inspiring, Hailey says. In 1971, Dr. Arrington set his sights on political change and was elected to the Birmingham City Council. He served two four-year terms before running and becoming elected as mayor for the first time in 1979. Dr. Arrington’s reputation long precedes him, but Hailey says she realized younger generations are not learning enough about him–more specifically, the opportunities he created for people of color. Thus, Hailey’s second book and her first children’s book, “A is for Arrington: The Story of Birmingham’s First African American Mayor,” was created. “I’m writing stories that curate black history, which I think is important especially with some [state governments] taking critical race theory out of school curriculums,” Hailey says. “I felt as a

young African American storyteller myself, it was important for me to tell the stories of people who look like me.” “A is for Arrington” chronicles the life of Dr. Arrington and his contributions to the city of Birmingham and beyond. This book is the first in a series of 26 children’s books that Hailey plans to publish–each one signifying African American heroes. Each book title will honor a person of color whose name is attributed to a specific letter of the alphabet. In March 2023, Hailey had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Arrington, who after receiving her email, contacted her within 24 hours for their initial meeting. He invited her over to his house and spent the afternoon not only talking about his life, but also getting to know Hailey. “I developed a personal relationship with him,” Hailey says. “I love him a lot. He’s become like a grandfather to me.” Hailey says it took her a while to create the first manuscript for “A is for Arrington” because of how many accomplishments Dr. Arrington amassed over his career. “What an honor it is to have this young author share significant moments from my life with the next generation,” Dr. Arrington says. “In my opinion, every child has the ability to dream big and accomplish their goals. I hope the young readers will be motivated to make a difference in their communities, just as my character in the book.” Hailey believes that by telling Dr. Arrington’s story, younger generations will be inspired to be the change they want to see in their communities. In today’s society, so many young people get caught up in social media, believing the grass is greener on the other side, Hailey says.

What one sees on social media is not reality. Reality is that not everyone gets played a fair hand, but what one does with the cards she is dealt will define her. “Your aspirations are the keys to your future, and I’m living proof that you can overcome any hurdle with tenacity and hard diligence to achieve extraordinary things,” Dr. Arrington says. While she may never obtain justice for her mother, Hailey says she will always tell heroes’ stories that do not need to be forgotten. In her short time on Earth, Tinisha inspired students of color to love learning and challenged them to think outside the box–helping them to believe they were more than the stereotypes often afflicted onto them. Dr. Arrington worked hard for every degree he earned– returning to his roots and pouring back into the community that helped raise him. No matter what hand they were dealt, they made the best of it and positively shaped the community around them, Hailey says. Hailey hopes voicing important stories will diversify who the general public sees as heroes or trailblazers, and more importantly, she hopes young readers will believe in their innate abilities to model the character they read about in their heroes’ stories. If good storytelling is the mouthpiece of truth, reading is the best weapon trailblazers can wield. Those interested in reading "A is for Arrington" may purchase copies on Amazon.

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR

The Shelby County Arts Council will kick off the New Year with Song Theater shows, gallery exhibits and classes. BY LINDSAY DYESS PHOTO BY PRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY Kicking off the annual gallery season at the Shelby County Arts Council is the opening of the annual juried art exhibit, the Robin Nance Metz Art Competition. Formerly the Adult Juried Art Show, this show gets its namesake from beloved local artist Robin Nance Metz, who passed away in 2022. This show was rebranded in 2023 to pay tribute to her artistic legacy in Shelby County. Artists from across the state are invited to enter work in eight medium categories for cash prizes, such as best in show and best in each medium category. Each year, we see a variety of talent that our state has to offer. Judge Stacey Holloway has no small task in selecting the art to be in the exhibit and then awarding the prizes. Join the SCAC for the opening and awards ceremony for the 2024 RNMAC on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m. This show is free and open to the public. It will be on display until Thursday, Feb. 29. Another can’t-miss gallery opening is the Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama, which opens on Sunday, Jan. 21. The Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama is an annual show for students of Alabama with visual impairments, blindness and/or deafblindness. The Helen Keller Art Show is open to students of all ages in Alabama in public, private, residential and home schools. The art show provides

students with an opportunity to showcase their special talents and skills. Art Show Director Shirley Wilson calls this opening reception the “Academy Awards for our students.” Join the SCAC in the Grande Hall Corridor Gallery on Sunday, Jan. 21 from 3-5 p.m. to celebrate these exceptional students and to see some great artwork! In January, the Song Theater will hold a special musical tribute performance to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring pianist Lincoln “Byron” Thomas. “This tribute holds a special meaning for me because I was born in Selma, where Bloody Sunday took place in 1965,” Byron says. “It’s an honor and a privilege to pay tribute to such an iconic man.” The tribute will take place on Monday, Jan. 15. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 (plus tax) and are available for purchase at shelbycountyartscouncil.com. If you’re looking for other great ways to support the arts, check out the Mardi Gras Bash, which is hosted by the Federated Women’s Clubs of Shelby County on Saturday, Feb. 17. This fundraising bash will feature hors d’oeuvres, dancing, a silent auction and live music by the Chuck King Band. Funds raised by this event support the outreach and mission of the Shelby County Arts Council. Tickets are $40 each or $75 for couples and can be purchased at shelbycountyartscouncil.com. For Tabitha and Fabray Turner, being sisters and business partners is something that goes hand in hand. “Embarking on this journey as sisters brought a unique set of circumstances,” Tabitha says. “The uniqueness was evident from the outset as we both maintained full-time jobs while laying the foundation for our venture. The initial phase posed challenges as we navigated the complexities of juggling our respective responsibilities, relying heavily on each other’s expertise for ideas and understanding clients’ needs.” The two female entrepreneurs launched Shift Your Paradigm and Turner and Associates LLC, which help people with taxes and business funding

Turner and Associates LLC is specialized in both business and personal income tax services; provides comprehensive financial support by offering payroll management; HR services; accounting; bookkeeping services and assistance with business formation; and exclusive benefits such as providing free notary services exclusively to membership clients. Shift Your Paradigm is dedicated to business funding, which assists clients with business funding needs; membership integration, which seamlessly integrated with Turner and Associates through a membership-based program; and holistic financial solutions, which aim to be a one-stop shop for a wide array of financial services. After Tabitha graduated from graduate school,

In 2004, the two initiated their venture in a modest location off Pelham Parkway. Since that time, the businesses have grown, including moving locations three times, before officially acquiring their own building in 2023. The sisters say this significant purchase marked a pivotal moment in the company, which allowed the fostering of further growth and continued to help to inspire new ideas. With the expansion in services, it also allows a “one-stopshop” encompassing both Turner and Associates and Shift Your Paradigm. While the early stages of the two businesses encompassed various needs, the sisters were able to transition to both working full-time for their business ventures and the dynamics of the companies shifted significantly. “It became notably more convenient to walk to the next office or simply sit down to discuss ongoing matters at any given time,” Tabitha says. “This journey, while demanding, has been exceptionally meaningful for both of us, the challenges we faced together have forged a strong bond, and the shared commitment to the business has made the experience all the more rewarding.” Both sisters agree that their understanding of each other as both sisters and business partners has allowed them to understand each other better, creating a dynamic partnership. “While we haven’t always excelled in comprehending one another, we recognize that the success of our company hinges on both of us contributing to its growth,” Tabitha says. “Over time, we have come to realize that prioritizing the business over personal matters is crucial. This shift in perspective has significantly improved our collaboration, fostering a better understanding of how to thrive collectively for the success of Turner and Associates, rather than pursuing individual achievements.” Turner and Associates operates as an accounting-focused business, providing services such as business and personal income tax preparation, payroll management, human resources support, bookkeeping, business formation assistance and complimentary notary services exclusively to membership clients. Married on Main Street Calera Main Street is supporting small businesses through its “Married on Main Street” program.

O

On Saturday, Sept. 23, at Collectivus Church in Calera, Alabama, Jimi and Michelle Judiscak were married in an intimate ceremony put on by the Married on Main Street program—produced by Calera Main Street. Watching the newlyweds say their “I Do’s” in front of family and friends, one could not help but feel the warmth of the happiness that exuded from their smiles. “We are gathered here today to celebrate the love that Jimi and Michelle have discovered in each other and to witness the union of two souls and commitment that will last a lifetime,” officiant Tom Braddock says. Michelle, who opted for an eggshell white, A-line gown with Chantilly lace, captured the breath of every guest in the room. Her poise and elegance, the rare definition of beauty, was only accentuated by her subtle yet stunningly beautiful, three-pearl necklace and glowy makeup style–compliments of

Jasmine Davis with SAVVY Salon. The bride walked down the aisle to Ruelle’s “I Get to Love You,” the perfect song for the loveliest couple. Such a melodious charm erupted from the congregation as Jimi and Michelle’s loved ones clapped and cheered for the newlyweds when they took their first steps as a married couple, arm in arm. Although the Judiscak’s nuptials were quite enchanting, the event venue, Collectivus Church, too, was decorated top-to-bottom in wondrous delight for the big day. “[Jimi and Michelle] have been wonderful and were great to work with,” Ben Nelson, pastor of Collectivus Church, says. “We love that we get to be a part of this special day.” The church was adorned in fall florals with gorgeous, autumn tablescapes, compliments of plant Gifts and Decor, decorating every table. breath elements accentuated each bouquet so eloquently, contributing to the subtle theme of the reception. Jory Heindel of The Martini Shakers performed smooth jazz and mo-town renditions, including tunes such as “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Guests enjoyed a caffeine and cocktails bar, made possible by Adventurer’s Coffee Co., and were even able to taste Michelle’s signature dragon fruit mimosa. Gumbo to Geaux catered the event, providing made-to-order, hot bar dishes, tailored to the likes of each guest’s request. To pay homage to the couple’s love of camping, Nedra Moore with Creations Galore and Moore executed a fabulous, three-tier cake design. The top tier, which was her token “wedding” flavor–a mix of flavors combining the couple’s sweetness–was overlaid with a buttercream icing and decorated with crimson, orange and yellow flowers. The bottom two tiers were filled with cupcakes including flavors of s’mores, strawberry and lemon. To end the evening right, Michelle and Jimi exited the church under a sparkler-lit send-off, riding away in a vintage, 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner, chauffeured by DAT Classic Ride. Weddings are always a feat for the vendors who come in clutch, but it should be noted that every vendor who came together to support Michelle and Jimi’s new journey were brought together through the organizational skills of Jackie Batson, executive director of Calera Main Street. “It’s difficult to sell a bride on a wedding if she can’t see images ShelbyLiving.com

of a wedding in that location, so we wanted to come up with a way to put Calera on the map as a wedding destination,” Jackie says. Jackie gathered several business owners in downtown Calera to brainstorm ideas to not only help show the county all that historic downtown Calera has to offer, but also help boost the local economy by supporting small, local businesses. The brainchild of those sessions became “Married on Main Street.” This program involved more than a dozen Calera businesses who each donated their time and talents to throw a wedding in Collectivus Church. The program, which would have retailed at more than a $20,000 value, was introduced to the public as a contest, in which interested couples had to like and share the original Facebook post to enter. Fifty couples were then chosen to attend a bridal fair, which featured every vendor who was participating in the contest. The vendors then picked three couples to go on to the third and final round, and the public voted on their favorite couples on social media with the couple having the most Facebook post engagement being selected as the winner. Talking about the Married on Main Street program, Nedra says, “It is an opportunity for us to bring joy and celebration to two special people in a unique and meaningful way.” While Michelle and Jimi won the contest, the other 49 couples were able to receive a discount if they had their weddings at 30 January/February 2024

Kaylee Morgan painted a watercolor landscape of the beautiful Rocky Mountains for the couple's destination wedding. It is used on the invitations' vellum overlay. The Mize’s invitation suites were printed on square Arturo paper, which is an Italian, hand-torn paper. Maci opted for moss green lettering in a besotted script for a more fluid feeling for her suite.

Forever Florals Second only to the bride, the most beautiful part of any wedding is the flowers. Floral arrangements carry such a sentimentality that physically showcases the vision of any bride’s desired palette, stylistic choices and decorum. Here, Sasha Johns, managing partner of Amazing Flowers and Occasions, reveals just how her arrangements helped bring to life the wedding vision of her clients and friends, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson. Sasha had the thrill of any florist’s career–designing gorgeous florals for her family friend’s wedding. Sasha first met the happy couple, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson, through Kaitlyn’s mother, Suzanne. The two friends go back nearly 15 years, and Sasha says this has been one of her most favorite events.

The Details Sasha utilized ivory and peach garden roses; pink, ivory and white stock; periwinkle delphinium; and yellow and peach ranunculus. She added in bits of greenery including green dragon, olive branches and both silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus into Kaitlyn’s bouquet and the ceremony’s standing arrangements.

The engagement shoot Ken recommends dressing either business casual or professional for the engagement shoot–a sports shirt, sports coat and trousers make the perfect outfit for the occasion. For months with varying temperatures, a thin sweater or shirt paired with a sports vest suits any figure nicely.

Felipe is wearing a Mauro Blasi sports coat, Current Elliott jeans, Di Bianca shoes and a Canali shirt. To accessorize, he is wearing a Meg Spivey bracelet and a Bigi pocket square. 50 January/February 2024

Most gentlemen tend to dress in a muted palette, accentuating their outfit’s character for events with “the guys.”

Pictured are shoes from Rubirosa.

To create this look, stylist Fonda Shaia paired a coat from Isaia, tie from Zegna, pants from PT01 and a shirt from Isaia.

The rehearsal dinner One might choose a tie, sports coat and slacks instead of matching suit pants as a versatile option that can be dressed down after the affair.

Olexa's

Diane Olexa’s love for beautiful pastry art grew as she did–watching her mother bake. At only age 23, Diane created her first-ever wedding cake for her college roommate in 1993. She started out creating one or two wedding cakes a week. She began creating cakes for her friends and her loved ones’ weddings, and in 1996, she extended her business to include event catering with her mother’s expertise to officially create the Olexa’s brand. Eight years later, Olexa’s following accumulated so much that Diane decided to open the business’s first brick and mortar in 2004 in quaint Mountain Brook Village. A 30-year veteran of the wedding industry, Diane says this business is special because of the memories she’s able to help create for her customers. Olexa’s today creates upwards of 200 birthday and wedding cakes a week, all while catering events and operating its intimate dining setting for guests six days a week. Here, she gives her thoughts on one of her favorite events at Olexa’s Catering, Cafe and Cakes–a romantic rehearsal dinner for her friends, Kinsey and Anderson Gore. PHOTOS BY SIDNEY SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY & CONTRIBUTED

Memories intoMeals Diane and mother-of-the-groom, Abby Gore, have been family friends since college. As Abby was planning the rehearsal dinner for her son, Anderson, she mentioned to Diane that Anderson loves chicken with alfredo sauce. Diane created the menu, incorporating Anderson’s favorite meal that added to the special night before the wedding.

Pictured is Diane Olexa and Anderson Gore.

The bride-to-be, Kinsey, had a long time dream of having her rehearsal dinner at Olexa’s. She wanted her guests to have that charming, old-world dining experience that the ambiance and decor at Olexa’s offers.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? One of my best friends convinced me to get on a dating app after a rough break-up. I was very hesitant to make a profile because dating apps were really not my thing. I eventually started talking to Pablo and immediately wanted to meet him! I was so nervous to meet up with him, so I brought a friend with me. We decided to meet at a Birmingham Barons game and had a great time hanging out.

the details Ceremony & Reception Venue: Blackberry Lane Farm Florist: Dead Head Plant Company Caterer: Tin Roof BBQ Cake: Fallon Barnett with Farm Girl Bakes Wedding Dress: Bella’s Bridal & Formal Bridal Hair/ Makeup: Ashley B. Salon DJ/Wedding Band: DJ Jammin Jere

THE PROPOSAL Pablo decided to bring me along on a work trip to San Diego in spring 2022. We had to make the one-hour trip to Disneyland on our last day, of course! After a long day of enjoying Disney, we took a break near the beautiful water fountain by the castle. That is where he decided to ask me to marry him. It was so perfect! Surprisingly, there were not many people around, so it ended up being a very romantic moment with just us. I was so surprised and could not believe he hid the ring in his fanny pack all day! WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I tried on more than 50 dresses that I thought I wanted for my wedding day, but I never felt like any of them were the one. When I tried on my dress, I knew immediately it was the one! My favorite thing about my dress is the unique color. It is not solid white like most wedding dresses. It has a tan under layer that really gives the dress character. I absolutely love it! I was looking for a dress that had a vintage feel, and I felt like my dress really fit in with the venue. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE The best advice I would give future brides is to stay flexible with your planning. Do not stress the small stuff, and enjoy your day because it goes by way too fast!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Tyler and I met at Central Church of Christ during a Tide4Christ event in college. Tide4Christ is a Christian student organization through the University of Alabama. While in Tide4Christ, Tyler and I were in the same friend group. We became friends and eventually started dating. THE PROPOSAL We had a little date day and decided to go for a walk around the lake after lunch. During the walk, music started playing, and Tyler asked me to dance. He then got down on one knee, said beautiful things that I can’t remember and asked me to marry him.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS Honestly, I would’ve never picked it out to try on myself. My younger sister, Sydney, who is a bridal consultant at Imperial Formal Wear, picked it out. When I put it on, I just knew! It flattered my figure well, and it gave me the shape that I was wanting. It had the perfect mix of lace and beading. It made me feel like a bride! WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Take the time to really envision what you want before you start talking to vendors. You don’t want to lower your standards when you are looking for the person you want to marry, so don’t lower them for your wedding. Do your research! Know what you want, and then find the vendors that can make it happen!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met online over social media. He asked me on a date, and I turned him down because I was nervous. It is a good thing he is so charming and persistent because he did not take that “no” for an answer. From that first date, I knew that I did not want to live life without him.

the details Ceremony & Reception Venue: Mountain View Gardens & Ballroom Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Pam Trumer, Mother of the Bride Caterer: The Happy Catering Company Cake: Jerell Horton with Mmm Cake! Wedding Dress: Bridal Bliss Groom’s Attire: Men’s Wearhouse Videographer: Lovebirds Studios DJ/Wedding Band: DJ SZN with Superior Sound

THE PROPOSAL Connor is so thoughtful and wanted to plan the perfect surprise. He was graduating and was planning to use his graduation party as a ruse for his proposal to me. It was a great plan that had what I said I would want–our families there to celebrate and support us. I should’ve laid off the Scooby-Doo as a kid because I couldn’t leave it alone, when our families were dropping clues. I asked Connor that same day if he was proposing, and he said he was. I had ruined the surprise, or so I thought. When I showed up to help set up for his graduation party, I opened the door, and he was on one knee with candles surrounding the living room. He said he knew this was the only way I would be surprised. It was just the two of us, and it was perfect. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I wanted a sleek, simple, almost retro dress. I found a dress in my price range that I really liked. We had a phenomenal seamstress add a French bustle and ordered the same material the dress was made of to make a pair of gloves to match. The gloves, bustle and open back are my favorite parts of my dress! WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Not only should you never be afraid to ask for help, but you should also choose what makes you and your partner happy. We didn’t have a wedding party. We had a small ceremony with a large reception–hours apart the same day. Your wedding should be whatever makes you happy! ShelbyLiving.com

I did not suspect that he was going to be popping the question. On our second day on the trip, we walked into a gazebo that overlooked the entire town. While I was distracted by the view, he got down on one knee and proposed! I was more shocked than ever. Needless to say, I will never forget how beautiful this moment was.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I have always had a love for vintage fashion, specifically ‘70s and ‘80s fashion. I thought it was going to be difficult to find something to tie in a modern style with a vintage twist, but out of all the dresses I saw, this was the beautiful dress that I fell in love with. The lace and the fluff caught my eye, along with the ivory tone that melted in with the milky white shades. It was the only dress I had to try on. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Try not to stress over brands or expensive decorations. You can have a gorgeous wedding with items found from the thrift store or even your backyard.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met on an online dating app, Bumble. I got a notification letting me know that I had a match and opened the app, and there was Chris. He messaged me right away. A couple of days went by, and we decided we wanted to meet in person. We had our first date on June 29, 2021, at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s in Helena. That restaurant is our go-to place now! THE PROPOSAL Chris proposed on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Chris had always said he wanted the proposal to be meaningful. Tuesday nights have always been our date night since we started dating. The night of Tuesday, Jan. 3 seemed to be like a normal date night. We were sitting on the couch, and he told me he wanted the moment when he would propose to be unexpected and sentimental. At this time, my house was on the market. We made many memories together in that house. Chris wanted one last memory to be made there, so he proposed on the living room floor. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I wanted something simple, classy and comfortable. I tried on about five dresses, but once I tried on the dress I picked, I just knew it was my dress! It was everything I wanted. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Remember, the wedding is about you and your partner and what you both want. The day goes by very fast, so enjoy every moment and most importantly, have fun!

Megan + Walt MAY 20, 2023 PHOTOS BY AL WEDDINGS

72 January/February 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Walt and I met through my sweet dad a few years ago. Walt worked for the same company as my dad, and eventually, he started working for my dad’s personal business on the side. My dad and Walt became close over the years, and I heard about him a lot at dinner time. On Feb. 4, 2021, my father passed away. Walt checked on my family and me every day in the weeks that followed. He asked me out some time later, and I decided it would be good to get out of the house. We had a wonderful time together, and we became inseparable!

the details Ceremony & Reception Venue: Thomas Jefferson Tower Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Threefold Events Florist: White Willow Events Caterer: Home Plate Cooking Cake: The P’Pool’s Bakehouse Wedding Dress: McClendon Bridals Bridesmaid Dresses: Bella Bridesmaids Bridal Hair/Makeup: Maggie Hodges Groom’s Attire: Mr. Burch Formal Wear Stationery: Fine Paperwork Videographer: Omari Hood DJ/Wedding Band: Tasteful Tea Band Wedding Transportation: Struggle Bus Bham

THE PROPOSAL We closed on our first home together on Jan. 25, 2022, and I knew the proposal wouldn’t be long after. Walt had been at our house all day “working on a few projects” and asked me to meet him there before going to dinner. I showed up to the house, not suspecting anything. Walt greeted me, and walked me to the deck. Walt, my sister and my mom decorated our back porch with flowers and candles. He arranged for a family friend to take pictures of the proposal before we left to get dinner, and we enjoyed the rest of the evening as a newly engaged couple. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I have always loved open-back dresses, so that was the one thing I knew I wanted, heading into dress shopping. I just kept coming back to the same dress, and it was the one. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Just remember some things may inevitably “go wrong” on your big day, but be sure to enjoy every second as it flies by. At the end of the day, you are marrying the love of your life–the main reason for celebrating.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? I was working at Twin Peaks when we met. I usually worked in the kitchen on Saturdays, but on this particular day, I agreed to work a night shift out front. Barnes was with his friends, enjoying watching World Series Game 5, which the Houston Astros won that year if anyone needs reminding. I checked on their table a couple times, but their tone changed when a man closer to my dad’s age–a stranger to us both–bluntly told me I should give him my number. He continued asking each time I came back around, and once he left, one of Barnes’ friends picked up the gig, coaxing him into asking for my number. Their persistence forced Barnes’ hand, and contrary to expectations, I gave him my real one. THE PROPOSAL On Dec. 10, 2022, in a living room surrounded by almost his entire family–half of which I had only met a couple hours prior–he pulled me off the couch. At this point, I all but blacked out, and I don’t fully remember what he said. I got the gist. As he dropped to one knee and asked me to spend forever with him, I obviously said, yes, but it did take a second to verbalize my answer. I finally got my answer out, and the crowd went wild. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I loved the simple front and all the character in the back of my wedding dress, which had such timeless elegance. It had the perfect amount of lace for me, and I was set on the buttons down the back. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and choose what you want. I love event planning, so I did all of that, but it was still crucial to have people who wanted to help bring my vision to life and take away some of the stress from monotonous tasks. 76 January/February 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met through mutual friends in college. He was a defensive lineman on the football team, and I played indoor and beach volleyball. Naturally, we hung out in the same crowd. Although it took us eight months of friendship to start actually dating, we quickly learned we were meant for each other.

the details Ceremony & Reception Venue: The Barn at Henley Florist: Gwynn Pyle Caterer: Tammy Raymond Cake: Publix Wedding Dress: McClendon Bridals Bridesmaid Dresses: Lulu’s Bridal Hair/Makeup: Cece Bunch & Tessa Nail Groom’s Attire: Men’s Wearhouse DJ/Wedding Band: Thomas Nails

THE PROPOSAL Zach had this proposal planned for at least five-to-six months. We had an early Christmas dinner at his nanny’s lake house in Wetumpka, and we had to show up early to help set up. I knew about it for at least three weeks. I got my nails done, got my hair done and got a whole new outfit because I just knew this was happening. When we arrived at the lake house, we made our way up the stairs. At the very top of the stairs, everything was set up for the proposal. It was perfect. We were able to have that experience just to ourselves, and we celebrated with our families later on. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS You can never go wrong with simplistic beauty. I knew I wanted the star of the show to be the pearls on the veil, the pearls on the shoes and the touch of the turquoise necklace, which represented my grandmother. The dress was just an accessory to everything else, but at the same time, it was simply perfect. The shop that we used was called McClendon Bridals in Sylacauga. The bridal consultants were so kind and welcoming. They really gave me the experience of a lifetime as a bride. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE My advice would be to relax, take care of yourself and focus on the reason why you are getting married.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met in nursing school in 2018 but did not get together until 2020. In 2018, I messaged him first on Facebook, but he was in a relationship. Later, he messaged me back, but I was in a relationship. In 2020, our last semester of nursing school, we both were finally single, and we started flirting. We both quickly realized this was the real deal and began to fall in love. THE PROPOSAL We went to Memphis, Tennessee, to celebrate our second anniversary. This was our first trip together. We spent the day enjoying an exciting zipline and adventure park, then went to relax by the water. We were near the Memphis-Arkansas bridge in the evening, watching the sunset. After taking a short, romantic walk, we ended up sitting down by the river. I asked Ryan a question and didn’t get a response. When I turned around to see why he wasn’t responding, he was on one knee, ready to propose!

the details Ceremony & Reception Venue: Brick & Rose Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Kendall Perry Florist: Brick & Rose Caterer: Brick & Rose Cake: Debbie Easterling Bridal Hair/Makeup: Becca Stephens Groom’s Attire: Men’s Wearhouse Videographer: Genuine Photography by Becca

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I have always loved classic wedding dresses. I tried on a few dresses at bridal boutiques, but nothing seemed right. I actually ended up finding my wedding dress online. The lace detail and buttons going down the back is what made me fall in love with it and know it was the one. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Focus on each other. We made sure to check in with one another and make sure this wedding was something we both wanted and liked. Keep it simple. We had a small wedding—less than 30 people—and it was honestly very relieving not to have to stress over planning. We had a family-only wedding, and it meant so much to both of us to only have the ones we love the most there. ShelbyLiving.com

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met through TikTok! We found out we had mutual friends, and we started texting back and forth. My brother was with me one day and got us to meet in person! We have been together ever since. THE PROPOSAL We were taking family photos on the beach. Collin told me there was a sea turtle on the sand nearby, and when I turned around to look back at him, he was on one knee. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The lace design is the reason I chose my wedding dress. When I put on my wedding dress for the first time, it made me feel like a princess. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Don’t overthink it. This is your and your husband’s day. Take in every minute of the day because it is over in a heartbeat!

‘Tis the season for weddings and romance! Whether you are getting engaged, planning a bridesmaids’ getaway, celebrating your own nuptials or marking an anniversary, there is a special destination for everyone.

HIT THE ROAD

PROPOSAL LOCATIONS Setting the tone for an engagement might often start with where the groom proposes to the bride. It could be where the couple had their first date or some other meaningful location—like the family ranch in Montana, where a groom hung the engagement ring on a nail on a tree, where he and his beloved enjoyed picnics. Many resort destinations relish being a part of a couple’s romantic future and offer whole proposal packages:

Photo by Mari-on Birgan The Lodge at Sea Island is a Forbes five-star, English-style country manor resort in Georgia that provides the perfect backdrop to any proposal (we’re thinking the rose petal bath butler service would be pretty nice)! As a special bonus, Sea Island invites previous honeymooners to save their receipts, and on the anniversary of their trip, pay the original rate on the first day of their stay. seaisland.com Amanyara, in the heart of an 18,000-acre nature reserve in Turks and Caicos, makes for a lush tropical setting, where the staff will arrange a “WILL YOU MARRY ME” sign in LED lights as you enjoy a private dinner in a secluded cove. The resort’s pavilions are situated in coastal vegetation and overlook the beaches of Northwest Point Marine Preserve—truly memorable! aman.com

BRIDESMAID & GROOMSMEN GETAWAYS After the proposal, the bride and groom will each secure their squad of bridesmaids and groomsmen, who will play a major part of the big day. Make plans to get away with these best friends and family for some serious memory-making. Hilton Head Health—The bride and her attendants can take a break from the hectic planning with a trip to coastal South Carolina for one of the destination’s wellness retreats, which includes spa time, self-care workshops, yoga and more. hhhealth.com Hollywood Farms—Gather your groomsmen and head to Hollywood Farms in Jeffersonville, Georgia, for a true sportsman’s getaway. Do a buyout of the antebellum site, or pick a weekend when Hollywood Farms is hosting a Fausti Shooting School or a bespoke quail or woodcock hunt. Chef Scottie Johnson will make every meal memorable, while the bourbon flows. hollywoodfarmsga.com

HIT THE ROAD

Andiamo Lodge—Just a short drive North from Birmingham to Mentone, Alabama, is Andiamo Lodge, a well-curated destination for those looking for a honeymoon destination closer to home. Owner Colleen Duffley dubs this a ‘lux-lodge’ experience, where attention to detail (think Frette linens and intimate concierge service) comes standard. andiamolodge.com

HONEYMOON SPOTS

Half-Mile Farm—This sister property to the venerable Old Edwards Inn in Highlands offers a quieter respite in the Western North Carolina mountains. His & Hers—A honeymoon can be the perfect time to set the tone for how a couple likes to travel. Fork & Leaf Travel, Inc. Owner and Certified Travel Associate Jenn Nix shared a unique trip she planned for a couple who like very different things for vacation. The couple both wanted a Costa Rican honeymoon. He wanted fly-fishing in the mountains, while she craved luxe spa time on the beach. Jenn booked them in a private residence near pristine fishing for the first half of the trip and then at the adults-only Jardin del Eden Boutique Hotel in Tamarindo for the second half. Suffices to say, both the bride and groom got everything they wanted from this vacation. forkandleaftravel.com jardindeleden.com The Blended Family Honeymoon— For those couples looking to include members of the wedding party in their honeymoon plans, Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod makes an ideal destination. Plan a private clambake on the 25-acre estate, or take the group whale-watching. The Inn’s Kids Crew program offers tons of activities for the younger crowd, while the adults engage in some coveted one-on-one time. chathambarsinn.com

MY SHELBY COUNTY NATE BOWER

Owner of Uncommon Physical Therapy

Sentimental Spots

Oak Mountain Lanes Every Thanksgiving Day, my family hosts “The Turkey Bowl” at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham. We invite friends, neighbors and co-workers to join in on the fun, and there’s even a trophy involved!

Eat Local

Big Bad Breakfast Shelby County has so many great food options, so it’s difficult for me to just name one. Since I’m a breakfast and brunch fan, I’d have to say the Creole Omelet at Big Bad Breakfast is my favorite dish. It never disappoints!

Get Outdoors

Oak Mountain State Park Every single family member or friend that visits us always comments on how beautiful this area is. I agree! Oak Mountain State Park offers so many things that my family and I enjoy, including camping, hiking, biking, fishing, golf and so much more.

Fellowship in Community

Concerts at Oak Mountain Amphitheater I love music, especially at outdoor venues. Oak Mountain Amphitheater hosts so many great concerts throughout the year, and it’s a perfect place for a date night with your spouse.

Being in Business in Shelby County

Uncommon Physical Therapy As a local, family-owned, small business, my community means everything to me. Since our opening, excellence has remained the vision. Excellence in clinical care, excellence in education and excellence in contributions to the community.
