FROM THE EDITOR

J

anuary may be cold and dreary, but it is also a symbol of new beginnings. For many people, the start of the new year is a time to reassess – whether it is re-examining career goals, exercise routines or even church attendance. In this issue of Shelby Living, we take a look at new beginnings of another sort – marriage. In our fifth annual bridal issue, we share the weddings of local brides and grooms – couples who are starting a new life together. uOur cover couple, Hunter Hill and Evelyn McKinney, grew up in Shelby County but did not meet until both were students at the University of Alabama School of Law. uMeagan Seale and Aaron Howard were high school sweethearts at Shelby County High School. After dating six years, they tied the knot in Columbiana this year. uEmily Rogers and Blake Lovett began dating in high school. They attended the University of Mobile after high school, then transferred to the University of

Montevallo. Throughout it all, their relationship stayed strong, and they married at The Sonnet House in Leeds in June. I love featuring the stories and photos of local brides and grooms each year in the magazine. Their stories are always sweet and the photos beautiful. Each bride and groom manages to put their own unique spin on their wedding. Kinsley Curren and Ryan Harrison gave crimson and white monogrammed koozies to their guests as a tribute to their love of Alabama football. The groom’s cake at Katilin Bitz and Adrian Candelaria’s wedding featured a zombie theme in honor of his favorite show, “The Walking Dead.” Check out all nine weddings beginning on page 40. Also, you can learn more about how to personalize your wedding on page 32 and 2015 dress trends on page 30. If you are getting married in 2015, please consider sharing your wedding with us for our January 2014 issue. Email Katie McDowell at Katie.mcdowell@ shelbyliving.com for more information. l

THE SIMPLE LIFE

No place like home

H

appy New Year! 2015 is upon us and with the turn of a calendar page, we’re eager for a fresh start, for a new beginning. Sorta like a do-over for last year. We’ve tweaked our top three New Year’s resolutions and committed to exercise, healthy eating, and the No. 1 Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, goal of all—to get organized. Sounds Simpleworksmtsp.com easy, doesn’t it? lisa@simpleworksmtsp.com The thought of those things aren’t 205.981.7733 hard at all. Yet what tends to get complicated is the space between thinking and doing. Hit that nail on the head! Why do we take something as simple as organizing our desk and make it into some huge undertaking that gets blown out of proportion? It’s simple. We tend to make things too hard. Period. Hit another nail on the head and this time with a sledgehammer! Here are some tips to make thinking and doing a bit easier.

Most disorganization comes from projects that are abandoned and left to finish later.

Baby steps. Match the project with the time you have. If you only have 20 minutes, don’t attempt to clean out the entire garage. Use those 20 minutes to focus on one area, like the sports equipment. Most disorganization comes from projects that are abandoned and left to finish later.

Containerize. “A place for everything and everything in its place.” Simple. Think about a silverware tray. Whether you’re 5 or 85 years young, if a fork was found in the bathroom, you’d know it didn’t belong there. You would know exactly where to put it. If an item doesn’t have a home, that item is out of place and becomes clutter. You know the toilet paper doesn’t belong under the kitchen table, so give it a home. Make sure you communicate where that “home” is to your family. Same principle for your office and coworkers. Time. “Do it now … ‘later’ is already booked!” Take that extra three seconds and put things back where they belong. It’s easy to do because you have created a place for it; you know where it goes and it’s easy to follow through. You’ll find extra bags of potato chips on top of my freezer in my basement. No particular reason; doesn’t have to make sense. Everyone who lives here or comes to visit knows to put the unopened bags of chips on top of the freezer. Oh wait—those chips are turning into carrot sticks. Look in the refrigerator. But you already knew that. It’s that simple. l January 2015 | 7

Barone wins UM’s Life Raft Debate History professor Robert Barone took home bragging rights in the University of Montevallo’s Life Raft Debate on Oct. 9. The annual Founders’ Day celebration sees UM professors make arguments in front of hundreds of UM students as to why their disciplines should be brought on a fictional life raft and survive all other disciplines in the event of a catastrophe. With a packed Palmer Auditorium, attendance was estimated at more than 800 and there were at least 50 more people watching the debate live at www.youtube.com/user/MontevalloForYou. Barone won against defending champion Scott Varagona, President John Stewart representing administration, Samantha Webb for literature, Stacy Bishop for kinesiology and Jeremy Carlson for law.

Art on the rails

he locomotive, that marvel of engineering and industrial design, was an integral element in the expansion of our nation from the early 1800s forward and is, in itself, a form of art. When Ken Boyd sets up his gear to photograph another locomotive every detail is painstakingly evaluated by this lifelong railroad enthusiast and photographer. In the past five years he has

traveled extensively after he began to consciously think about these images as a fine art project. For his newly released book, “The Art of the Locomotive,” his photos cover a period of some 38 years with 150 large-format plates. Over that time his equipment included Nikon 35mm, Hasselblad 2 ¼, and, for the early images, 4x5 view cameras. After poring back over old files, scanned negatives and slides, he set

about retouching and bringing them up to the quality of modern digital files. “Beyond editing existing files,” he noted, “I researched and sought out images that I felt were needed for a book. My collection includes images that range from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast and from the Atlantic to the Pacific.” “Most of the images are of steam-era locomotives with some diesel-electric and electric locomotive images.” After he carefully scrutinizes every detail — bolts and conduits, sheet metal and glass — Boyd digitally edits to enhance luminance, contrast, tonality and color. The look is clean, idealized and almost painterly. He describes his process in the book, showing before and after images. In 2009, Boyd and his wife, Dj, traveled to Washington D.C. to get a good photo of the John Bull, an early locomotive circa 1831 and the first purchase for the — Ken Boyd Smithsonian’s major industrial display. They also journeyed to Cass, a remote mountain location in West Virginia to photograph the Shay locomotives at the Cass Scenic Railroad. Unknowingly, they arrived at the time of a big railfan photography event. “We just blended in with the participants and were treated to a number of special demonstrations and photo ops. The lighting was perfect,” he recalls. Although Boyd has visited many “excellent railroad museums across the country,” he is particularly fond of one that is close to home. “The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera is a real jewel,” he notes. “The

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

Folk art at its finest Story by LINDSAY DYESS Photograph CONTRIBUTED

O

n Jan. 16, the Shelby County Arts Council will open its doors to some of the finest folk art artists in the area. Fine Folk Art II will include artists Mary Ann Casey, Maurice Cook, Dianna Hiott, Linda Holt, Scott McQueen, Anthony Tavis and Teresa Wamble. The exhibit will feature paintings on tin, wind chimes made from objects such as rolling pins and silverware, gourd art and funky folk dolls, just to name a few. “Many people don’t do the art circuit and would never see these works. As long as I get to be the curator, I want to introduce totally new artists each year,” exhibit curator Teresa Wamble said. Last year’s Fine Folk Art exhibit was a big success. Folk art is such a big part of Southern culture, and Wamble and the

Arts Council hope to give these artists some much-deserved exposure. Folk art is not restrained by traditional rules of art and is generally characterized by a very loose style. Many artists choose to use nontraditional items as the background for their work; for example, some artists paint on license plates or even barn doors. “Folk art makes me happy,” Wamble said. “Folk art is fun to look at, but also always tells a story. It’s a story that many people can relate to and that’s why it’s so unique among the arts.” Fine Folk Art II opens at the Shelby County Arts Council Jan. 16 from 6-8:30 p.m. Live music and refreshments will be provided during the reception. For more information on this event, upcoming shows and exhibits and available classes, visit Shelbycountyartscouncil.com or call 205669-0044. l

A

lthough three-time Tony Award nominee Rebecca Luker has considered New York City home for almost three decades, she has fond memories of growing up in Helena. As you might expect, lots of those memories have to do with performing.

14 | ShelbyLiving.com

“I’m from a family that enjoys singing and all sorts of music. My parents and siblings always had nice voices, and we’d sing six-part harmony in the car on vacations,” Luker said. “My mom taught me the alto part to ‘Silent Night’ when I was very young, and that’s all it took for me to pick out harmonies on other

songs.” Luker went on to attend the University of Montevallo, where she received a bachelor’s degree in music. The university later presented her with an honorary doctorate in fine arts. A professor from UM actually helped Luker jump-start her professional career. Luker’s UM voice teacher, Bennie Middaugh, helped get her involved with professional jobs, one of which led to an internship with the Michigan Opera Theater. While she was working with the Michigan Opera Theater, she met her future agent, who was visiting a client. “And that started me off,” she said. During Luker’s decades-long career as a performer, she’s starred on Broadway in such well-known roles as the Fairy Godmother in “Cinderella,” Maria in “The Sound of Music,” Lily in “The Secret Garden” and Christine in “The Phantom of the Opera.” She was nominated for Tony Awards for her roles as Winifred in “Mary Poppins,” Marian Paroo in “The Music Man” and Magnolia in “Showboat.” She’s appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall, at the Lincoln Center and at The Library of Congress, among others; she’s also appeared with the Alabama, American, Birmingham, Chicago, Royal Stockholm and London Symphonies, just to

name a few. She has several recordings available, including “Anything Goes: Rebecca Luker Sings Cole Porter.” Luker also has several television credits to her name, including “Matlock,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Law and Order: SVU.” Most recently, Luker starred in the musical

“Little Dancer” at the Kennedy Center, which ran through Nov. 30, 2014. Luker said she was drawn to “Little Dancer” because of the “interesting” role she played. “Initially, when Susan Stroman, our director/ choreographer, asked me to do a couple of workshops of the show, I immediately said yes. The fact that the score was written by (Lynn) Ahrens and (Stephen) Flaherty didn’t hurt,” Luker said. “What kept me interested over these past three years was the beauty of the story and my interesting role. I play the adult Marie Van Goethem, who was the model for Edgar Degas’ iconic sculpture, ‘Little Dancer Aged Fourteen.’” Luker said performing at the Kennedy Center is phenomenal. “The Kennedy Center is one of my favorite theaters. I was in Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Passion’ during the Sondheim Festival of 2002 and it was an amazing experience,” she said. “‘Little Dancer’ is the first brand-new musical the Kennedy Center has produced.” Luker said she counts her role in “Little Dancer” among her favorites, but that particular platform is a crowded one. “I’ve been so lucky to have had so many wonderful roles over the years,” she said. “Some standouts for me are ‘Lily’ in ‘The Secret Garden’

because of the stunning score by Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman, ‘Marian’ in ‘The Music Man’ because it’s simply one of the best musicals and musical roles ever written, the Fairy Godmother in ‘Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella’ because it was the first real character role I’d ever done and was so much fun, and finally, my current role of ‘Marie’ in ‘Little Dancer’ because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done, and I relish a challenge. We’re all hoping it has a life after Washington, D.C.” While she has many favorite onstage roles, Luker said she truly enjoys every medium in which she performs. “Live theater is probably the hardest and therefore, the most satisfying, but singing in front of an orchestra is beyond thrilling, and acting on camera is so different and challenges me in another way,” she said. “I’ve not done as much on-camera work and would love to do more of it.” Luker hopes to see “Little Dancer” extend its run, and she also has some concerts scheduled and plans to continue auditioning for TV and film projects. While she has nothing scheduled in Alabama currently, she hopes to return to her birthplace someday soon to continue showing off her well-honed talents. l

School 2014, Taylor graduated with an advanced diploma and her high school experience included a dual enrollment in Jefferson State Community College. Currently, the University of South Alabama freshman is majoring in Speech and Hearing Science with a minor in Spanish. Receiving a scholarship in dance she is a member of the USA Prowlers dance team. Taylor’s high school interests included Starlette Dance team, peer assistant and Oak Mountain Master (Ambassador). In 2010, she embarked on her first missions trip to Nicaragua. This fall Taylor returned to Cedro Galen, Nicaragua. This time in addition to serving in the children’s ministry and construction she translated her previously published brochure “Neglected and Abused Children” into a Spanish version and shared it during a teacher workshop. “I believe that students are perfectly positioned to recognize and report abuse,” Taylor said. She received the coveted Girl Scout Gold Service Award in 2011 as she organized and implemented a Paper Recycling program at her high school and secured her first community grant for $500 to place a small recycling bin in each classroom. Under the leadership of Dr. Donna Strong, by graduation Taylor expanded the program into a complete (paper, plastic and aluminum) sustainable program when she wrote and received two additional grants totaling $3,500. “We should always leave a place better than we found it,” Taylor said. For her efforts she received the — Myrah Taylor Presidential Service and Duke of Edinburg Award. Taylor’s personal platform is advocating for neglected and abused children both at home and abroad. She has supported Grace House Ministries (Jefferson County), PACT Parent and Children Together (Morgan County), Owens House (Shelby County) and Bardardo’s Charity (London, England). Cultivating her Girl Scout skills, Taylor designed and developed a special opportunity patch called “ Shades of Blue” to educate older scouts on this sensitive issue. As a peer assistant with the approval of her principal, Joan Doyle, she also wrote and published a brochure titled “Neglected and Abused Children.” It has been used as an educational tool in Shelby and Jefferson county schools. Supported by the peer assistants, Taylor organized a Blue Ribbon fundraiser that raised over $1,500 for Owen’s House, which support the children of Shelby County under the direction of Mrs. Cindy Greer. In 2013 she was in the top 10 for Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen and was a finalist and second alternate in the Distinguished Young Women of Shelby County scholarship program.

“It’s the little things that count and they all add up.”

Taylor graduated from Oak Mountain High School and is now a students at the University of South Alabama.

“I have always been taught that to whom much is given, much is expected in service,” Taylor said. “I have been a Girl Scout since I was 6 years old and this program has taught me character, confidence and leadership skills. I enjoy leaving things better than I found them.” As for her plans for college, Taylor plans to become a speech language pathologist and eventually own her own business. She hopes to partner with the Girl Scout Council in Mobile and the Mobile Child Advocacy center and continue to use her brochure and patch as an educational tool. She encourages other youth to give back to the community in any way possible, even if their time is limited. “It’s the little things that count and they all add up,” she said. l

Feed the

people Chubb’s Grub Station provides food for all Story by GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY Photographs by JON GOERING

C

hubb’s Grub Station owner Will Cholewinski loves to serve food, but not just to patrons of his popular restaurant. “It’s my responsibility to feed people, whether they can afford it or not,” Cholewinski said. “Feed the people” – Cholewinski’s motto and mission – is also the name of the initiative, which allows the restaurant to provide food for the surrounding community. Each time a customer brings in two non-perishable items, they get a free drink, and on the 15th time, they get a free meal. At the end of each week, Cholewinski matches all of the non-perishable donations with perishable donations such as milk and cheese and donates all of the food to Manna Ministries. “In our first year opening, this community has helped us provide 5,000 meals. It’s fantastic,” Cholewinski said. All of the donated food stays in Shelby County, Cholewinski stressed, which allows the community to provide for its own people. “Our service to the communities that we are in is first and foremost. We are here to be servants of men and to be our brother’s keeper. That’s why we’re in business,” he said. Food insecurity is something Cholewinski knows firsthand, after his family spent time on food stamps when his father, an industrial engineer by trade, fell on hard times. “I was one of those food stamp kids when I was a child. It was not something my dad wanted to do, but he understood that his family needed to be taken care of,” Cholewinski said, noting that his father continued to serve the community despite being in need, using part of his food allowance to fill others’ pantries.

Popular sandwiches include the BLT, Reuben and grilled fish sandwich.

“He was helping me to develop my servant’s heart even at a young age,” Cholewinski said. Cholewinski also developed a love of cooking early on, and remembers many evenings spent enjoying food and cooking for others. “I come from a big Polish family, and my dad loved to cook. Every holiday possible our house was full of (Poles) eating just enormous amounts of food. From the time my dad was able to put me on the counter, I helped out,” Cholewinski recalled. Cholewinski started his career in the food industry at age 8, selling homemade easy-bake oven cakes, and subsequently held a number of restaurant jobs including manager of a catering company in Nashville, before opening his own restaurant in Alabaster in October 2013. “I’ve just been pushing and following this dream for forever,” 26 | ShelbyLiving.com

Cholewinski said. Chubb’s Grub Station has an extensive menu, boasting thick, juicy burgers, wings, po-boys, tacos and a single salad. “We specialize in fat boy food, is the way I like to say it. I say that as a fat boy,” Cholewinski laughed. The restaurant’s most popular menu item is the burger, which has won a number of awards including Shelby Living’s “Best of the Best” 2014, but the po-boys — which feature french bread sourced straight from New Orleans, and are Cholewinski’s personal favorite — are a close second. “We have lots of transplants from Louisiana come and eat here all the time and say we’re giving them a run for their money,” Cholewinski said. “I don’t know, but that’s what they say.” A second Chubb’s Grub Station was set to open in Chelsea in January 2015 | 27

December, and Cholewinski’s plans for the future do not stop there. “Long term, my goal is to cut the need for foodrelated assistance in the state of Alabama in half before I die,” Cholewinski said. Ultimately, Cholewinski hopes to provide food for one million people, year round. “Once I get to location number 12, if all of them are providing 25,000 meals (per year), we can provide 1 million meals, and with 200 locations nationwide, that gives us the ability to provide meals to one million people three times a day, 365 days a year.” Though Cholewinski’s business model hinges on philanthropy, he does not consider himself to be exemplary. “This is my restaurant, but honestly I’m just a regular, everyday, foul-mouthed sinner,” Cholewinski said. “I’m just trying to walk the path the Good Lord has set before me.” Chubb’s Grub Station is located at 410 1st Street SW in Alabaster. Hours are Monday-Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Wednesday-Thursday from 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. For more information, call 205-6648696 or visit Chubbsgrub.com. l Chubb’s burgers are the most popular menu items.

Picking the

perfect dress

Trends for 2015 include color, lace and vintage detailing Story by GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY Photographs CONTRIBUTED

S

hopping for the perfect dress can be daunting—between deciding on a price range, style and designer, the options are endless. Though many brides opt for classic styles, there are many ways to add elegant touches for the perfect gown. Colleen Hopwood, owner of Bella Couture in Mt Laurel, stays on top of the trends for each season in order to help each bride find the dress of her dreams. Off the shoulder necklines are hitting it big this season, with delicately draped sleeves made of lace and organza taking center stage, Hopwood reported. Colors such as blush, gray, soft blues and mint green are also trending for the year. “We see more light gold or champagne colors under ivory lace,” Hopwood said. “The pop of color under the lace gives the gowns a somewhat vintage look and showcases the texture and pattern of the lace.” Theknot.com reports a variety of trends for the season including nude lace details, crop top dresses and column beadwork to elongate and slim the silhouette. Vintage styles were abundant on the runway this year, Hopwood said, with “30s glam” as one of the primary styles showcased. “Soft sheath gowns with stunning beaded details and elaborate embroidery bring back the golden age of Hollywood,” Hopwood said. Though many vintage styles are making a comeback, one trend Hopwood has not seen resurface are the puffy sleeves from the 80s and early 90s. Tulle skirts with details such as tiny twinkles or large flowers made from yards of fabric are also trending, and detachable skirts allow a dress transition from a ball gown for the ceremony to a shorter dress for the reception with little effort. Some popular designers for the season include Enzoani and Matthew Christopher, both winners of the Distinguished Excellence in the Bridal Industry award, Hopwood said. Brides at Bella Couture often opt for a classic style, 30 | ShelbyLiving.com

such as a lace a-line dress or a fit and flare gown. “We have more brides requesting straps or sleeves which can be easily added to most strapless gowns,” Hopwood said. Hopwood cautions brides-to-be to make a plan and have a budget before shopping for a wedding gown. “Your bridal ensemble should be approximately 10 percent of your total wedding budget,” Hopwood said, and noted that brides should read reviews of bridal salons and research general information on designers and fabrics before shopping. Though styles change over the seasons, the most important thing is for a bride to feel beautiful on her big day. “To me, a bride should get the gown that makes her feel amazing,” Hopwood said. “If a bride loves her gown and how it makes her look, it is the most important part of her big day.” l

How to make a wedding as unique as the couple

Story by LAUREN HEARTSILL DOWDLE Photographs CONTRIBUTED

T

he best moment of many people’s lives is their wedding day. To make it a truly unique event, there are several ways couples can add their personal touch to the big day. From the ceremony to the reception, couples are looking for ways to do something different, says Ashley Stork, owner of I Do I Do! “People worry about their weddings being cookiecutter or like their friends,” Stork says. “Weddings all have the same basic elements – but it’s what you do with those elements that sets it apart.” Stork works with couples to provide everything for their wedding – from day-of coordinating to planning and design services. She also has an in-house graphic designer who creates custom January 2015 | 33

invitations, programs, menus and other paper items. “The printed materials all coordinate and represent their tastes and styles,” Stork says. “They can add their own little personal marks.” The pair can also include elements that will last for years. “One couple did a time capsule,” Stork says. “They each put something in it about their relationship during the ceremony, and they’re going to open it on a special anniversary.” The reception food also gives the couple a chance to share their tastes. “Menus aren’t one-size-fits-all anymore,” Stork says. “They’re a really fun way to incorporate your favorite things.” Couples can incorporate dishes or a food item that are memorable for them – like something they ate on their first date or the night he proposed. Then, they can share the story behind the dish on a paper card placed next to it. Signature drinks are another option. “They can create his and her drinks or ones together,” Stork says. “They should pick their favorite flavors, instead of trying to please everyone else. We did a signature margarita for a family who loved making margaritas. We had another couple from New Orleans, and we brought in a machine

to make hurricane drinks.” Another way to put a personal touch on the day is with the favors. Stork worked with one couple that made a jam recipe from the bride’s grandmother. They put paper cards next to the

jam that told the backstory. “The best wedding favor is food,” Stork says. “People will always take food.” If there’s something special to the couple, such as football, they could make football-shaped cookies in bags with monogrammed tags. She advises couples to look at the different parts of the wedding – from the food to the father/daughter dance – and see how they can make those things memorable. “People think it needs to be over the top, but they can just take the standard elements of a wedding and create their own moments from that,” she says. Themes are one way for a couple to personalize the wedding, and the farm/outdoor style continues to be a popular choice. “But, couples are taking more of an elegant approach now,” Stork says. “It’s still a farm theme, but now it’s farm with chandeliers instead of mason jars.” For more information about Stork’s I Do I Do!, visit Idoidoweddingplanning.com or call 205565-5448. l Gifts for guests can be personalized to reflect the wedding’s theme or the couple’s interests.

A diamond is

forever

The engagement ring dates back centuries, but is more popular than ever today Story by GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY Photographs CONTRIBUTED

L

ove — and marriage — is a tale as old as time, but engagement rings have a more definite beginning. Some anthropologists date the tradition of using rings to symbolize marriage back to ancient Rome, but most believe the custom really began in earnest in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the first diamond engagement ring to be designed for his fiancé, Mary of Burgundy. The trend continued through the 1800s, when Victorians popularized “posey rings,” ornate rings designed with a variety of gemstones and metals, often in the shape of flowers. Diamonds were not the primary stone of choice for engagement rings until the discovery of African diamond mines in the 1870s, which made diamonds available to the masses. The mines were controlled the De Beers Company, which began an aggressive marketing campaign featuring the stone. In the 1947, the De Beers began marketing diamonds using the now-famous phrase “a diamond

is forever,” which increased sales dramatically. Almost 70 years later, the diamond is still the stone most brides-to-be choose for their special ring. “In my 24 years in the business, I’ve seen maybe five people do a colored stone in the center instead of a diamond,” Paul Petro, owner of Paul’s Diamond Center in Alabaster, said. However, colored stones have been on the rise in recent years, a trend Jessica Landmon, granddaughter of Southeastern Jewelers’ founder Louis Steed, attributes to Princess Kate Middleton’s oval cut blue sapphire ring. Colored rings can be a way to save a bit of money while still staying “trendy and on point,” Landmon said. The most popular cut of diamond also changes over the years, with princess cut diamonds and three stone rings popular in the early 2000s. Now, most brides opt for a more traditional cut such as a solitaire diamond or an antique style ring, Landmon reported. Yellow and rose gold bands are also making a comeback, Landmon said, and sales of halo rings, once the most popular variety due to their reasonable price range, are beginning to decrease. For Landmon, the best part of spending more than 16 years in the jewelry business is following families as they get engaged, married and have children. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve helped with a gift for a girlfriend and then they come in and I help them with their engagement ring and then later they come in and I help with their push present,” Landmon said. “It’s just neat to be involved from the very beginning and then down the road as their family grows.” l

unter and Evelyn grew up 20 minutes apart, she in north Shelby County, he in Columbiana. They shared a dentist and an orthodontist; they joined the same Shelby County Honor Band in middle school. Their fathers had long known one another, working together on a number of projects. How many times had they crossed paths before a fateful meeting at the University of Alabama School of Law? Hunter quickly fell for her wit, kind heart and beautiful long legs. She took a little more convincing, but loved Hunter’s earnestness, honesty and eager commitment. Always the ambitious pair, Evelyn entered corporate law practice in Birmingham, and Hunter moved to Memphis to work in fixed income research at a broker-dealer. The two could hardly be separated, driving the three-and-a-half hours oneway to be together each weekend for over three years. On May 17, 2013, Hunters popped the question on Evelyn’s front-porch swing. For two “planners,” the decision to marry without being certain where they might live or work was a clear statement of priority. After carefully analyzing all the possibilities, the pair found a way to be together every day: Nashville. Both their employers maintained offices in the city, and it would be somewhere new for them to explore. They married in Reid Chapel at Samford University — Hunter’s alma mater — on May 24, 2014. Evelyn’s family pastor, Harry Walls of Shades Mountain Independent Church, performed the ceremony. Evelyn wore a one-of-a-kind gown by Modern Trousseau from White Dresses. Hot House Designs provided the flowers. The reception was held overlooking downtown Birmingham at The Club where they danced the night away with the Craig Duncan Orchestra. The cake-toppers were a third-generation family heirloom, having been used on the wedding cakes of Evelyn’s grandparents and parents. Evelyn is the of daughter of Diane and Steve McKinney of Birmingham and Hunter is the son of Carol and Mike Hill of Columbiana. Together at last, the two live in a loft in downtown Nashville. eagan Brooke Seale and Aaron Lynn Howard said “I do” in the warm glow of sunset on Sept. 27, 2014. A wedding is a special day for anyone, but this occasion was especially joyful since these nuptials were six years in the making. The couple met while attending Shelby County High School in 2007. After a year of talking to each other almost every day, their friendship began to grow and they started exclusively dating in 2008. Both attended college and the couple maintained a very difficult, long-distance relationship for two years. Aaron attended Nashville Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tennessee, where he specialized in diesel technology. Meagan focused on a career in nursing at The University of Alabama, and later graduated from The University of Alabama at Birmingham with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Although apart in distance, the couple kept close and Aaron proposed in March of 2014 after almost six years of dating. The couple married at dusk in an outdoor ceremony at Douglas Manor in Columbiana, Alabama. Décor lining the isle included ferns, bronze lanterns, and pink English roses atop rustic stumps. The couple chose to have pews for guests to provide a more intimate feel. Meagan said “I do” in an ivory and lace fit-and-flare gown from Bella Couture. Eight bridesmaids wore knee length blush pink dresses with the groom and his men wearing complementing tan suits with blush pink ties. After the much-awaited vows were exchanged, the couple and guests enjoyed a reception in the large indoor facility. A buffet-style dinner was served followed by a delicious variety of cakes. The bride and groom’s grandmothers made homemade cakes in the couple’s favorite flavors to accompany the traditional bride and groom cakes. After much dancing and rejoicing, the couple departed through a trail of Alabama Crimson Tide shakers into a Jack Roush Mustang. For the next week, they enjoyed an allinclusive honeymoon on the coast of Rivera Maya, Mexico and the six-year wait was all worth it. January 2015 | 45

yan Harrison met Kinsley Curren when two of their respective friends began dating and eventually married. They were both in the wedding party, and Ryan could not get away from Kinsley on the dance floor even if he wanted to! A first date followed the night after the wedding on New Year’s Eve 2010. Ryan proposed to Kinsley in June 2013 at the Bright Star Restaurant in front of the parents and grandparents for Kinsley’s early birthday dinner. She thought she was getting an iPad, but it was something with a lot more sparkle! The wedding was held June 7, 2014 at First United Methodist of Hueytown and the reception was held in the heart of Birmingham at The Vulcan Park and Museum. The reception was held outside on the overlook patio at The Vulcan, which provided downtown Birmingham as the backdrop. The ceremony consisted of summer colors that complemented the bridesmaids’ dresses. Hydrangeas, snapdragons, ranunculus, baby’s breath and roses were used in the floral arrangements for both venues. The reception was adorned with rustic décor and hand painted monogrammed burlap runners. Rustic old shutters and windows completed the photo booth where everyone could capture moments with props and friends. A four tier vanilla cake covered with buttercream icing, monogrammed initials and topped off with hydrangeas and roses completed the bride’s table. The groom’s table featured a Bryant Denny Stadium cake along with custom M&M’s and monogrammed cookies. Ryan and Kinsley wanted to incorporate something that they both love. Both are recent graduates of The University of Alabama and have enjoyed attending many football games both home and away. Their love for Alabama football contributed to Ryan’s Bryant Denny Stadium cake their crimson and white monogrammed koozies. Ryan and Kinsley departed in Ryan’s Roush Mustang after running through a line of crimson and white shakers.

mily Brooks Rogers and Forrest Blake Lovett were married Friday, June 6, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at The Sonnet House in Leeds. The bride is the daughter of Gene and Sharon Rogers. After graduating from Chelsea High School in 2009, Emily attended the University of Mobile for two years before deciding to transfer to the University of Montevallo to be closer to Blake. She graduated from the University of Montevallo with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Shortly after graduation, Emily took a job as a first grade teacher at Vincent Elementary. Blake is the son of Gary Lovett and Lanita Howard. After graduating from Chelsea High School in 2009, Blake attended the University of Mobile for a year before transferring to the University of Montevallo, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history. Blake is currently working on a master’s degree in education with a focus on social science. It was in January of their senior year at Chelsea High School when they began dating. On their four-year anniversary, Blake planned a surprise engagement where he blindfolded Emily and brought her to their high school alma mater. There on the football field, Emily found Blake surrounded in rose petals and down on one knee. Emily and Blake’s ceremony was both sweet and intimate. Their favorite part of their ceremony was when they partook in communion and Blake prayed over his new bride, which was followed by another prayer from Emily’s father. The matron of honor was Mary Lauren Samplaski and the maid of honor was Lindsay Kate Glausier. The bridesmaids were Tina Roberts, Jennifer Mitchell, Samantha Hyde, Summer Lovett and Dakota Lovett. The best man was Hunter Lovett and the groomsmen were Micah Glausier, Jeremy Samplaski, Kyle Carpenter, Josh Allen, Ben Rogers and Trey Landman. Although their original outdoor ceremony location was rained out, the night was still incredible and everyone danced the night away.

eremy Beauchamp and Kendra Bristow met in June of 2012, when Kendra was completing her senior year at the University of Alabama. Jeremy had been working on her parents’ farm repairing fences when her mother decided they needed to meet. Jeremy asked Kendra on a date and when they first met, Jeremy grabbed her up and gave her a hug like he had been missing her for years. From that moment on, it was as if they had known each other a lifetime. Kendra’s Nanny told her, “That’s the one I would marry.” Nanny’s mother said the same thing about Kendra’s grandfather the first time she met him back in 1952, and they’ll be married 60 years this May. On May 31, 2013 Jeremy told Kendra he was taking her to dinner to celebrate their one year anniversary. He put her in the truck blindfolded her and drove her out to their favorite spot on the farm: a secluded meadow on the backside of the property. When the blindfold came off Kendra saw the table set up with flowers and champagne, believing this was her surprise. However, Jeremy was kneeling behind her waiting for her to turn around; he even had to whistle to get her attention! When Kendra turned around, she asked him, “What are you doing with that?” as she started to cry, Jeremy said “Trying to marry you, so will you marry me?” The two sipped champagne among the herd of cattle that had gathered and told one another they would love each other until the day they died. Jeremy and Kendra had an outdoor traditional ceremony on May 24, 2014 at the bride’s antebellum-style home in Calera, where guests drank glass-bottled cokes and ate turnip greens and fried green tomatoes. Kendra entered the ceremony to the music of a blue grass band wearing her grandmother’s hand-made garter, which her great-grandmother made and every bride in the family has worn since that wedding day in 1955. Also included at the ceremony were pews from the church where Kendra’s Grandparents were married. After a wedding trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, the couple resides on the bride’s family farm where they raise longhorn cattle, horses and team rope. January 2015 | 53

enna Cyrill and Graham Godfrey met at the College of Charleston in 2006 while both were student athletes. Five years later Graham was playing professional baseball for the Oakland A’s and Jenna was finishing graduate school in Philadelphia. The A’s were playing the Phillies when Graham and Jenna reconnected. They began coast-to-coast dating until they were engaged. Graham was selected for the Oakland A’s starting rotation in 2013. Jenna and Graham traveled with the A’s to Japan for the Opening Day Series. Then it was time for Jenna to start planning the wedding. The wedding and reception took place at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Nov. 16, 2013. Guests were seated as a string quartet played classical versions of modern songs like The Verves Bittersweet Symphony and Cold Play’s Paradise. The officiate was the broadcaster for Graham’s AAA team in California. A diamond design was carried throughout the celebration as a nod to Graham’s baseball career. This design was presented on the wedding invitation and duplicated on a large backdrop at the ceremony. It was also used in the cake design and on a custom dance floor monogram. The reception included buffet dinner with stations representing meaningful places like Charleston’s Low Country cuisine and Italian cuisine in honor of Jenna’s heritage. Small pastry cakes decorated like baseballs served as the groom’s cake. The DJ customized mixes from their playlist for a night of dancing. Guests were allowed full access to all of the museum’s galleries throughout the evening. Jenna and Graham spent the next two months in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic while Graham played in the Caribbean Winter League. They make their permanent home here in Birmingham.

Aim for 30 minutes of exercise daily: walk during lunch; take a break every 20 minutes from your desk and walk down the hall; take the stairs instead of the elevator; go to the gym; or play outside with your kids or grandkids. • Get More Sleep. A good night’s sleep is defined as

8 hours every night. It does wonders for your mood and appearance. Lack of quality sleep is linked to a greater risk of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. • Drink More Water. You should consume half your body weight of water in ounces daily for proper hydration. • Reduce or Eliminate Sugary Beverages. Sugar suppresses your immune system; sours behavior,

attention and learning; promotes sugar highs and cravings; promotes heart disease; and cancer cells thrive on sugar! • Diet isn’t something you do to lose weight. DIET is WHAT YOU EAT everyday to FUEL your body, and your life. The biggest deficiency in our diet is fruits and vegetables. We need to eat lots of them and a wide variety. “How many” and “How much”? Just follow the USDA Recommended MY PLATE — at least half of your plate should contain fruits and vegetables at every meal. Scale Back Alabama

The Wetumpka Astrobleme: Eighty-three million years ago, a cosmic object struck what is now Elmore County, Alabama. Then, the area was covered by the shallow reaches of the northern Gulf of Mexico and the impact of the asteroid or comet created a crescent-shaped crater we know as the Wetumpka Astrobleme. The energy released by the impact was 175,000 greater than the nuclear explosion in Hiroshima in 1945. In February, the Alabama Wildlife Center will host “The Wetumpka Astrobleme, An Ancient Tale” as part of its Audubon Teaches Nature series. The field trip to Wetumpka will be Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. and will include a visit to the astrobleme. David Frings will be the guest speaker.
