She received her bachelor’s degree in public relations and her master’s in journalism at the University of Alabama, where she also taught writing courses for two years. She has written for several publications including Hoover’s Magazine, Birmingham Business Journal, Tuscaloosa Magazine and the Executive.

Lauren Dowdle, Writer The former editor of Hoover’s Magazine and Shelby Living, Lauren now lives in Nashville, Tenn., with her husband and four spoiled pets — but you’ll still spot her around Hoover visiting friends and family. She writes for a variety of local and national magazines, along with a few international publications. But when she isn’t staring down a deadline, you’ll find her obsessing over her dogs and cats (or really any animal), decorating a cake or adding more freckles by the pool.

Lindsay Dyess, Writer Originally from south Alabama, Lindsay Dyess moved to Shelby County in 2008 to finish her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Montevallo. She began volunteering at the Shelby County Arts Council shortly after college and joined the staff in 2016. She also works part-time as a barista and freelance writer and artist. In her spare time she enjoys making and selling art, photography, and playing the ukulele.

Dawn Harrison, Photographer Dawn Harrison is a freelance photographer out of Birmingham. She grew up and put down roots off of 280, where she lives with her wonderful husband, 5 kids, 1 son-in-law, 2 grandkids, 3 dogs, 2 cats, 8 cows and 2 ducks. When she isn’t taking pictures, you can find her burning up 280 getting to various school and sporting events, or hanging out in carpool lines. She feels extremely blessed to be a part of the publication and to continue to meet such inspiring members of our community.

I

FROM THE EDITOR

ON THE COVER

I once interviewed an elderly couple that had been married for 75 years. As I scribbled notes in my reporter’s notebook, I let the wisdom in their honest words settle in my mind like welcome friends. The man and woman, both in their 90s, were simply childhood playmates who stood out to each other as they got older, and they decided to get married. They didn’t sugar-coat their imperfect life together as they reflected on challenges they faced, like having to spend time apart during his military service. But they had a deep appreciation for each other that was as evident when they were speaking as it was when they were sitting next to each other in silence. When the woman said she married for keeps, she had 75 years to back up her claim. This couple knew something about love. Every couple’s love story is different, which makes our annual wedding issue a joy to produce. My team and I worked for months to make this issue our best wedding issue to date. The day we sent it to press was bittersweet; while we were sad knowing we were finished working on wedding-related content for another year, we were giddy with excitement thinking about this magazine making it to coffee tables, being passed around at family gatherings and resting in the hands of blushing brides-to-be who are excitedly planning their big days. One of my favorite parts of the wedding issue is reading about the couples who submit their wedding announcements and photos to us. It’s hard not to love a good how-we-met story. It’s even harder not to get sentimental reading a sweet proposal story. Every year, I’m amazed at how creative and thoughtful these men are in meticulously planning a proposal that’s perfect for their future wives. (Ladies, that’s not to say you’re not allowed to propose, too.) Having a memorable proposal story to tell is something a couple can carry with them forever. Words only go so far, and then photos come in. Friends, you are about to see some gorgeous wedding photos. These exquisite images from couples’ big days will fill the gaps between the words and let you see the unforgettable moments that marked their celebrations. Along with the announcements, we’ve included local registry ideas, style tips for guests and wedding dress trends to help brides and their guests navigate wedding season. I wish you all a happy and lovely 2018.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Focus on That As we turn the calendar, chances are you’re faced with activities and commitments that you planned a few months ago. Most people had their new calendar downloaded or bought back during football season and created a blurred line between last year and this month. We anticipate 2018 to have renewed promises, commitments and goals, yet what does that look like for you? What’s your “that?” You know, the inner peace that comes from juggling everything on your plate: career, spouse, children, hobbies, friendships, spiritual beliefs, health, etc. How do we know if we ever find “that?” Whenever you’re feeling like “that” isn’t happening, check to see if these six things are getting your attention and focus. uFaith. Date night, turn the TV off, family dinner at a table with phones left in the other room. It’s not quantity but quality that’s the most important aspect in reconnecting with your kids and spouse. uFitness. Take a walk during your lunch hour, get up early and hit the gym, join a softball league. Exercise is important and you have time for anything that’s a priority in your life. With a gym on every corner and open all night, the excuses are disappearing right before our eyes. uFun. Go to the movies, dinner with friends, take a vacation. Whatever makes you smile and relax is what defines fun for you. Letting go of stress is as important for our health as the food we eat. And don’t forget to laugh. Laughter is good for the soul. uFinances. Financial worries (along with death of a spouse and moving) are one of the top three stresses in our lives. Be proactive in knowing your accounts and balances, stay up on when bills are due and live within your budget. uFaculty. This area is dedicated to your career. Consider allotting an hour a week to push through wrapping up loose ends that are hanging over you. When you dedicate even 60 minutes to “cleaning up” all those little things you haven’t had time for, it won’t take long for you to feel back on top of things. When you focus on making sure you are touching all these “F’s” each week, you’ll be saying “I’ve got that!” What a great feeling to kick off the New Year. It’s that simple.

CAREER PATH OF THE SOUL Earl Waller’s childhood love of music led him to a career playing and teaching guitar. BY CARMEN BROWN PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

E

Earl Waller remembers running home after school every day to catch “Where the Action Is,” a short-lived spinoff of Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” that featured up-andcoming acts such as Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Everly Brothers and the Byrds. This was 1966, and he was only 10. “I was truly enamored with all of the music I heard and saw on TV,” he says.

Not long afterward, Waller and his childhood friend, Scott Chestnutt, both received guitars as gifts from their families, so they began playing and practicing together. This was when what he calls his “career path of the soul” began. Waller, now 60, has enjoyed working for 39 years as a professional guitarist and instructor, having played with local bands such as K.D. Ryzer and 1620 Sunset and

performing alongside big names such as Percy Sledge, Jerry Lee Lewis as well as American Idol alum Bo Bice. “I did it to get girls, mainly,” he jokes. “And 22 years later, it’s proof it worked.” Waller is referring to his wife, Jenny, a local artist and photographer. “We met at a show I was playing 27 years ago, and right off the bat we hit it off,” he says. Waller says the first few years he tried to play were rocky, requiring lots of perseverance and practice. Waller said he would often go visit his cousin Carl in

Macon, Georgia, who played bass guitar, and watch him play. He would also practice in his parents’ basement, leading to a humorous encounter with the police who arrived to tell him he was too loud, but then stood and listened for a while before they told him to stop. “In six years, I went from horrible to awful,” he says. “But I would watch somebody good play, and I would just keep my ears and eyes open. “Musicians are very gracious and willing to show you what they know,” he says. “I also took a musical theory class while I

was at the University of Montevallo, and the things I learned still resonate with me.” Waller also began teaching guitar lessons in 1989 and began teaching full-time in 2000, mentoring students from local schools including Briarwood Christian School, Oak Mountain Intermediate and High schools and Westminster. “I’ve had up to 60 students in one week, from 5 years old to 60,” Waller says. “After the first lesson, they will leave playing. It’s usually ‘Wipeout’ by the Safaris. I’ve come to realize that God has put this in me to be a positive mentor for these kids.” Waller’s latest musical gig is playing with the Wringers, a classic rock band that plays songs by bands such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. The band includes Jim Murray, Greg Gentry and Todd Chase. The band has been performing at the Courtyard on 280 every other Friday evening. “About four or five years ago, I was on the soup aisle at Publix and ran into Greg, and we got to talking and said we should put a band together. I said, ‘Let’s not even rehearse. We all know these songs.’” Waller also uses his musical talent as a vehicle for his faith, serving as worship leader at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Riverchase Parkway. For six years, he has played at the church on Sunday mornings as well solo acoustic performances at the evening service. “I carry my witness of Jesus Christ everywhere I play,” Waller says. “I use it as an opportunity to witness.” One of Waller’s most memorable experiences was when he was part of the band K.D. Ryzer and had the chance to play with Percy Sledge, who sang the classic “When a Man Loves a Woman.” “I’m hardly ever star-struck, but I recognized that he was a legend,” he says. Waller says he also fondly recalls getting to play with Bice when he came to Birmingham to do a show along with some members of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. “My friend Dennis was station manager at Fox 6 and asked if I would come play with him when he came to town,” he says. “That was a surreal moment.” Waller says his career has been nothing short of soulenriching, part of his DNA. “A lot of things happen just because you’re still standing. I’ll probably be playing Sweet Nursing Home Alabama when I’m older.” Waller can be reached on Facebook or at ewguitarman@ yahoo.com.

Residents can find all of the tastes, décor and family hospitality of New Orleans right here in Pelham, thanks to Cajun Boys & Our Poboys. From the purple, gold and green decorations to the smell of beignets frying in the back, this restaurant has everything someone would expect to find in the French Quarter. And that’s exactly what owner Jack Donovan wanted to deliver to his community. “It’s always been a passion of mine. I’m from New Orleans, and I wanted to open a restaurant of our own one day,” he says. “I wanted to bring a little bit of New Orleans to Birmingham.” His wife, Michelle, grew up in Natchez, Miss., so she was also surrounded by fresh seafood. The couple moved to Alabama from New Orleans 18 years ago and now live in Chelsea with their three children: Jack Jr., Ashleigh and Carson. They decided to create a taste of home in Shelby County with Cajun Boys & Our Poboys, opening the restaurant this past September in Pelham behind their convenience store on Highway 52 W. “We’ve been so blessed and grateful with Shelby County and Jefferson County coming out. We’ve had a great response with everyone so far,” Donovan says. Customers are greeted with a large LSU sign on the door — although Michelle is an Alabama fan — and Mardi Gras-themed colors and design throughout. There’s a patio area outside, small bar inside, televisions perfect for watching the game and

plenty of space to relax with friends and enjoy some authentic Cajun food. “We are a family atmosphere and kid-friendly,” he says. “We want them to feel at home when they come in.” The restaurant truly feels at home for Donovan, considering his wife and children work there, as well. Having his children involved with the business was important for him and his wife because “we’ve tried to teach them the value of a dollar. We want them to grow up with responsibilities.” Beyond the inviting environment, the restaurant attracts people with its flavor-filled dishes that will make them feel like they are enjoying a meal straight from Louisiana. They use authentic New Orleans products for all of their dishes, including Gambino’s French bread, Patton’s Sausage and Leidenheimer’s bread. Their most popular menu item is the combo option with the shrimp po’boy and a cup of Grandma Donovan’s seafood gumbo. As for appetizers, their fried alligator is a favorite, served with Jack’s Special Sauce. They also serve items like oysters, fried crab claws,

Diners will also find special menu items on certain days of the week. On Saturday mornings, they serve coffee (regular and Chicory) and beignets, transporting customer’s taste buds straight to the French Quarter. The owners’ 12-year-old son, Carson, is actually the beignet chef, and they use his recipe for this fluffy, sweet dish. 28 ShelbyLiving.com

They also serve muffuletta on Fridays, which is a popular New Orleans sandwich with salami, mozzarella, ham, provolone, marinated olive salad and mortadella on Leidenheimer’s famous bread. The restaurant will also have crawfish beginning about mid-December when they are in season. Donovan says they plan to add etouffee and pastas to the menu, as well.

Everything is cooked to order, so customers can ask for more or less spice, depending on their preferences — and Donovan says nothing they serve is too overbearing with spice. While there are plenty of fresh ingredients, one thing people won’t find at the restaurant is frozen, out-of-season items. They get fresh items in four days a week and serve dishes when they are in season. ShelbyLiving.com

All of their menu items can be ordered for catering, as well. Donovan encourages people to come and taste their authentic Cajun-style food. Some of his favorites are their gumbo, red beans and rice, softshell crab and hot sausage, and he says he enjoys sampling the dishes every day. This isn’t the Donovans’ first restaurant, and they’ve even found ways to merge the two a bit. The couple also purchased Johnny Ray’s in June, with locations in Chelsea and the Colonnade. They’ve brought that restaurant’s Honey’s Award Winning Pies to Cajun Boys, serving chocolate, peanut butter, coconut and lemon by the slice and whole pies. In addition to their tasty menu items at Cajun Boys, Donovan says they also plan to have live music on the weekends. The family wants the restaurant to be a place where others can come relax, enjoy themselves and taste some authentic dishes. Cajun Boys & Our Po Boys is located at 3120 Highway 52 W. in Pelham. AMERICAN VILLAGE

REVOLUTIONARY EXPERIENCES

The American Village offers students an engaging BY MELANIE POOLE PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED glimpse into America’s past. The American Village does some of its most important work through its role as a unique Pre-K–12 classroom. Partnering with public, private and home school leaders and educators, it welcomes tens of thousands of school visitors annually. The Village offers programs designed to immerse and engage young people in some of America’s most important founding stories, and once engaged, to draw them into discovering their own roles as citizens and leaders who are stewards of America’s liberty. In its 18-year history, over 625,000 students have visited the American Village on school field trips, becoming immersed as firsthand participants, personally caught up in the excitement and drama of America’s revolutionary experience. Students are fully engaged in programs grounded in critical academic content. The students are also intrigued and captivated as they “step into the scene” of stories of the past which become real, personal and relevant. “This is an intimate, personal and authentic encounter with some of the people of America’s past, helping students understand who we are as Americans today,” American Village founder and president Tom Walker says. “By learning of the foundations of American selfgovernment, these students are preparing themselves to take on what has been called the most important office in our land, that of citizen.” The signature American Village educational program is Liberty! and it is specially designed for fifth grade students. (It also is adapted for high school students with more advanced vocabulary and

context.) The students become part of a 1765 protest against the Stamp Act. They quickly jump into the scene, becoming incensed at the audacity of the Chancellor of the Exchequer to send stamp masters to these colonies. Before long they are shouting in unison, “No taxation without representation!” In another suspenseful vignette, studentpatriots conspire to get a secret message past the British to Paul Revere’s wife. A British soldier stops them as they carry the message and questions them. It’s off to Washington’s Army and the winning of the American Revolution. Students drill earnestly to win the praise of their sergeant. Along the way these youthful patriots learn powerful lessons of service and sacrifice for country. The American Village has two programs designed specifically for Pre-K and Kindergarten students – Living America’s Story: An American Christmas and Living America’s Story: Colonial Story Time Adventures. These programs complement three other Living America’s Story (LAS) programs for kindergarten-grade 3: Presidents’ Days, Patriots and Thanksgiving. All of these programs are participatory, highly interactive and engaging. Colonial Story Time Adventures sparks youngsters’ imaginations through play in a simulated homestead with Abigail Adams, and as participants in Paul Revere’s midnight ride. An American Christmas includes the telling of “Twas the Night Before Christmas Mouse,” in which the resident rodent of the house tells the tale a little differently than author Clement Clarke Moore.

FOR 22 YEARS, DEB WARNAT HAS TURNED WEDDING SUITES INTO ARTWORK WITH HER CALLIGRAPHY. BY EMILY SPARACINO | PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON

Calligraphy was a regular part of the curriculum at Deb Warnat’s elementary school in Indiana. Like math or reading or history, it was something everybody had to do. For Deb, however, calligraphy became a favorite pastime, and eventually, a career. “I started loving calligraphy in the fourth or fifth grade,” she says. “It just really latched hold. It’s that time in your life when you love notes and paper and pens. Just being able to create something was just really magical.” Deb’s love of calligraphy – the art of creating decorative lettering by hand – never waned, but she put it on the back burner of her busy adult life. In 1995, she picked up her pen again to take a calligraphy class, and it was like riding a

36 ShelbyLiving.com

bicycle. The muscles in her hands remembered the familiar feeling of pressing pen to paper as if she were in school again. “Once I got started in the class, it was like, ‘Oh, I remember how I love that,’” Deb says. “It was just kind of that love I had as a child.” She was living in Birmingham then, and continued taking classes. Ann Erickson, the long-time calligrapher who taught the first class Deb signed up for, also got her involved in the local guild. Owning a calligraphy business wasn’t in her original plan, but it seemed to be a natural next step for her. In 2005, Deb started Deb Warnat Designs. She offers calligraphy, illustration and engraving for invitations, savethe-date cards and wedding suites. She also teaches

WEDDINGS

calligraphy classes at Studio Bham in Homewood. Deb emphasizes the power of watching seasoned calligraphers as they work. She remembers watching one of the White House calligraphers during a class in Birmingham, and walking away with a better sense of how applying certain amounts of pressure produces different results. “We were all huddled around a table just watching her,” she says. “It’s almost hypnotic. It’s just so beautiful to see the flow. It’s so graceful.” Deb says a “revival” of scripts and handwritten letters is taking place, and calligraphy is at its core. “To me, it really connects arts. When you create something, you create it from your heart to give to somebody, and when you receive it, you recognize that––that it’s something special, something unique, something that somebody has taken the time to really plan out and be thoughtful about.” Deb does 29 different hands (a calligraphy term for fonts) and often uses a script called copperplate. Deb tries to cater to people’s requests, no matter how unique they are. She once created 13 wedding invitations – each with calligraphy and watercolor embellishments on handmade paper from Spain

WEDDINGS – for a couple getting married in California. “I’ve really enjoyed working with brides a lot,” she says. “It’s almost like you start becoming part of the family. I start following my brides, they start having children … it’s just really sweet.” She also makes hand-lettered awards, certificates, mirrors, chalkboards and “anything that doesn’t move.” When she’s not working on materials for clients in Shelby County, Hoover and the greater metro Birmingham area, Deb is teaching, sometimes at her home studio in Indian Springs, sometimes at Forstall Art Center or Studio Bham and sometimes at her church. As long as she’s practicing calligraphy somewhere, she’s content. “The main thing is the practice that goes into perfecting it,” she says. “When I teach, that’s one of the main things I emphasize: You’ve got to keep up the practice. Like any skill, you’ve got to use it.” For Deb, calligraphy is an art form that connects people today to the past, when letters were inscribed on the walls of caves with rocks. It’s also a therapeutic outlet. “Sometimes, I’d have women (in class) that were really going through something, and they would say for those two hours they’re in class, they totally forgot about everything that was going on,” Deb says. “It was a relief. It’s good for your brain development as you’re creating new pathways in your brain. There’s something, too, about the eye-hand coordination that really helps your memory. It becomes part of you.”

As you prepare for your wedding day, don't forget to consider where you will live to start your new life together! If buying your first home is in your near future, check out my tips for a smooth transaction: Decide what you can afford. It’s no secret that one of the first steps in the home-buying process is deciding what exactly you can afford in a home. Don’t consider what you may be able to afford in the future. Research the neighborhood. If possible, drive or walk through the neighborhood you’re considering to determine if you can see yourself living in this area. Remember that photos will always show a neighborhood in its best light, so don’t blindly trust what you see on the screen. Get a home inspection. Evaluating needed repairs and renovations raises the need for a professional inspection. While you may be able to determine surface issues, an inspection can get down to the root of any potential problems

What Not to Wear

A Style Guide for Wedding Guests BY MADOLINE MARKHAM

Style coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth frequently gets asked for advice on what to wear—and not wear— to weddings.

Follow the Dress Code

What do I wear to a barn wedding? How do I dress up for a black tie affair when it’s cold outside? We’re always asking friends and Google what we should wear to weddings, so we turned to style coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth for some answers and style inspiration for our 2018 weddings. We like her perspective: “The whole point of fashion is to have fun so when you are getting ready for that event, you are excited to go and feel festive and enjoy yourself more.” Read on for more tips and ideas from Megan on how to dress to feel comfortable and confident.

One of the biggest things I see is clients wondering how dressy they should be for a cocktail or a black tie wedding because things have gotten so much more casual. I know it’s so easy to wear something that’s not quite black tie, but stick to the dress code.

50 ShelbyLiving.com

Style Rules Leave White for the Bride

Forget the Pantyhose

I think the rule not to wear white still applies. I still don’t think it’s ever appropriate unless the bride requests everyone to wear white because it’s her special day to do so. If your dress has white in the print or texture, that’s okay.

Hose are dated, and unless you are Kate Middleton, it’s not necessarily your friend. A lot of my clients say, “But my legs are pale or have spider veins,” so I recommend using a sunless tanner or a spray tan if that makes you feel better.

WEDDINGS

But what do I wear to THIS wedding? Time of Day Afternoon

I think a nice church kind of dress is typically appropriate, unless the invitation states otherwise. A great nude pump is always good, or a sleek wedge.

Venue

Early Evening

This is typically cocktail attire. You don’t have to go full bedazzled and sequined, but definitely wear a nice cocktail dress and a strappier sandal heel.

Barn or Farm

Go with a dress that’s more relaxed looking, maybe it’s a floral or flowy. A block heel sandal or sleek wedge works well because it won’t sink into the ground.

Modern Venue

Wear something that’s sleek and chic, fits that vibe and is a nod to the venue. It will help you feel more confident when you get there because you will fit in more.

Country Club or Similar Venue

Black Tie

I really encourage people to go long. But you can also choose a really dressy cocktail dress, maybe one that’s tea length to elevate it.

Do something that suits your personal style. You can think outside the box so it’s not just your same black lace dress.

Essentials for Your Wardrobe Keep these dressy staples on hand so even if you wait until the last minute to pick out a dress, getting dressed for an event is so much easier.

Evening Shoes

I love to get my clients one evening shoe they can wear with everything, typically a strappy muted metallic because it will really go with every color. If you have basics like a nude pump on hand, when a wedding or special event arises, you aren’t asking, “What shoe am I going to wear?” You already have one.

Pashmina Wrap

One of my favorite tricks for colder weather is a black cashmere pashmina. It’s something great to have on hand to keep you warm, and it’s also good for travel.

Clutch

It’s important to leave our everyday bags at home and invest in one clutch or small shoulder bag. It pulls your whole look together and can really elevate it. A black or muted metallic color and a clean and minimal design are typically the most versatile. ShelbyLiving.com

1. How do I keep from freezing when it’s cold outside? If it’s an afternoon wedding or outdoors, black opaque tights can be totally fine if it’s the right dress. Pair it with a closed-toe black shoe to continue that vertical visual line. For cocktail and black tie unless it’s an outdoor wedding, I think it’s best to wear a coat and go from the car to the venue and grin and bear it. A lot of my clients have really loved doing a cape, maybe with a fur trim.

2. What are some ideas to try a different look? A jumpsuit can be a really fun wedding alternative. Maybe it’s sequined or velvet,

52 ShelbyLiving.com

FAQs That Keep Us Wondering maybe it’s a thicker silk. Rent the Runway, an online fashion rental company, is a great opportunity for experimenting because you can do something you wouldn’t necessarily buy or want to wear one time.

accessories and dress it up or dress it down. Maybe you can put a great pendant necklace with it, maybe a statement earring and cuff, maybe fun shoe—things that will make it feel fresh so you are not wearing the same thing to every wedding.

3. If I’m going to try to only buy one or two dresses, what should I look for?

4. Can I re-wear a dress around a similar crowd?

I have a lot of clients who will go with a black cocktail dress that is a medium/ all-season fabric so they can wear it all year round. Or it could be navy or a beautiful fuchsia. Picking a seasonless color and material can give you that one-and-done dress if you don’t go to that many weddings. You can change up the entire look with

It depends on how long it’s been and how big of an event it is. If it’s a memorable dress and the same group of people a month apart, it’s nice to have two options, or to have one and rent the other. If you are going to a wedding in November and another one in May and it’s an all-season dress, then by all means wear it again.

How You Met: Clinton and Madison met at an Alabama game in Tuscaloosa. It is pretty amazing because he is a hardcore Auburn fan and an Auburn grad. Madison, on the other hand, went to Alabama and luckily does not take football as seriously as Clinton. She happened to be very close to Clinton’s high school friends, and they introduced them. When Clinton and Madison met, they did not exchange numbers, but little did they know their paths would

cross again. They were both living in Birmingham at the time and ran into each other one night, and she told him, “You should take me on a date.” He responded with, “I think I should.” The rest is history. The Wedding Dress: Madison’s wedding dress was truly a dream come true. She shopped around several amazing dress shops in Birmingham, but nothing stood out to her like Heidi Elnora Atelier. The day she went to find the dress, she had her mom, Clinton’s mom, her

As soon as she put the Aster Mae dress on, the two were a match made in heaven. She was the first bride to ever wear this particular Heidi gown, and it was truly a dream and honor. Heidi and her team made Madison feel like a princess. Madison’s dress was made from scratch locally in the Birmingham shop.

The Wedding Dress: Justin Alexander from Bella Couture. The dress was two pieces, the dress itself and a bolero jacket. Both pieces were Justin Alexander and went together perfectly. Favorite Moment: We were set to have an outdoor ceremony, and we weren’t supposed to see each other until I (Rachel) walked down the aisle. However, a huge thunderstorm threat pushed us to have a first look and take the ceremony indoors. Even though it wasn’t what we planned, our first look

is something I’ll always remember as Blair realized that the dress he had imagined was exactly the same as the dress I was wearing. He knows me well. Favorite Wedding Details: I grew up with my mom’s best friend’s kids. They really felt like the siblings I never had. Growing up, they traveled around the country singing. They sang for our ceremony, and it was such a special piece of the day. Our flowers were the flowers of my dreams. I wanted everything to be very light and

Having all of her best friends in one place was a huge blessing. She did her first look with her bridesmaids in the family room, and the first look with her dad and brother in front of the house. She will forever cherish the memories she has from that last day in her childhood home. Favorite Details: Her favorite details of the big day were the ceremony cross, the charcuterie boards and her bridal bouquet. She envisioned a very simple and natural backdrop for the ceremony. She

WEDDINGS decided to have a cross made by a family friend. He came the day of the wedding and built the 10-foot cross on site. He even made them a small version that is hanging in their home. The charcuterie boards matched their Italian dinner theme. They had a couple boards placed on each table along with a basket of bread and a bottle of wine. The bridal bouquet was the most beautiful thing Emily has ever seen. The florist completely understood her vision and went above and beyond in her design.

Favorite Moment: Gabbi and Will’s first look in the chapel at American Village was their favorite moment from the big day. It was such a special time to be able to have to themselves and enjoy what was about to come. They exchanged letters and gifts that they’ll cherish for a lifetime. The Wedding Dress: When looking for a dress, Gabbi found one that she loved on Pinterest that was elegant, classy and flattering. At Diane’s Formal Affair, she tried

on many dresses, but still none were what she had in mind. Her consultant suggested a strapless dress with a bolero. Gabbi was skeptical of the idea until she put it on. This was the dress for her. She was able to have the off-theshoulder look with a mermaid style for her pictures and the ceremony. At the reception, she took the bolero away to surprise her husband and guests in a strapless dress with a beaded sash, and she danced the night away.

Favorite Details: One of the bride’s favorite wedding details were the white lilies that were in her bouquet and on her cake. These flowers bloom every spring by the creek on the farm where she was raised. Her dad would pick these for her and her mom. Seeing them always reminds her of him. The second detail was the bracelet Gabbi shares with her mom. Gabbi’s bracelet has a small heart, and her mom’s bracelet is the negative image of that heart.

Favorite Moment: It may sound cliché, but seeing John was the highlight of my day. It had been a somewhat stressful morning as Birmingham had gone to bed the night before to a steady snowfall and had woken to a thorough blanket of snow and ice. I (April) had spent the night at the house of one of my bridesmaids who happened to live across the street from the church. I spent a good part of Saturday morning on the phone with vendors, making sure venues would be

open and décor would be arranged. Many sweet people came together to make our beautiful, special, snowy wedding happen. I felt like I had run a marathon before the ceremony began, but once John and I saw each other, he put me at ease and reminded me that what mattered is we were getting married—even if we had to strap on boots and hike to the pastor’s house. Favorite Wedding Detail: One of my favorite details is the hairpiece I wore—a restored vintage bridal wax crown from England. I never fancied

WEDDINGS myself as a tiara-wearing bride, but something about the delicate white-andgold features of the headpiece brightened my face in more than one way. Upon our engagement, I immediately started searching for one to call mine. I stumbled upon an Etsy shop for Waxflower Vintage, where a UK-based gal hand-makes and sells headpieces composed of antique and vintage wax flower crowns and bouquets. I’m inspired by the vintage aesthetic and knew I wanted my bridal look to have a vintage 1920s bent, so the wax flower crown fit right in.

The Proposal: I (Mallie) went on a beach trip with my girlfriends from home. Little did I know, Joe was busy making big plans for us back in Birmingham. My dad informed me they wanted to have a birthday gathering for my mom and me at our Grannie’s house. Joe accidentally rolled his ankle playing basketball that week, which landed him some crutches and a walking boot. At Grannie’s house on Saturday, Joe had his medicine bag from the pharmacy, but considering the meds

he had been taking for his ankle, I hardly even noticed it. As we slowly made our way toward the house, Joe began telling me how much he loves me over and over again. After asking me to take his crutch, he lowered himself down onto one knee. He pulled a box out of his medicine bag, opened it to reveal the most perfect ring I had ever seen, and asked me the best question I had ever heard. Of course, I quickly said “yes!” Favorite Moment: My favorite

part of my wedding day was, by far, walking down the aisle. I was anticipating getting to see Joe all day long since we didn’t do a first look, so once the time finally came, I couldn’t have been more excited. There were so many emotions that culminated to that moment from the year that we were engaged. I can still put myself exactly in that moment; it felt like it was just Joe and me in that sanctuary, and we will both always remember that as the best part of our wedding day.

How You Met: I (Paulina) have the privilege of saying that Robby was my high school sweetheart. We were both in a business course and actually didn’t even introduce ourselves until close to halfway through the school year. I remember going home from school to gush to my mom about how cute I thought he was and how he made me all giddy. He was my all-time high school crush; I would fill with butterflies when he walked me to my locker, and grinned from ear-to-ear

when I saw his name pop up on my phone to call me and say goodnight. The Proposal: The day started like any other, getting up and going to work. Except this day was a little more exciting because after work, Robby and I were planning to go on a dinner date, then to see Wicked at the BJCC. Robby told me that we have to stop by Trinity United Methodist Church, where his mom works, to grab some suitcases out of her office (because we were leaving for a cruise in a couple of days).

WEDDINGS We were exchanging our typical sweet-nothings when we approached the gate door that enters the prayer garden. I have only seen the prayer garden while sitting inside the church, never actually going in, but always secretly wanting to. Robby had to tell me that before getting the suitcases he wanted to go inside. After tearfully accepting his proposal, his family and my family flooded out of the church to celebrate in the moment with us.

5 Ways to Lose 18 Pounds in 2018 Small modifications are usually the easiest to implement. By incorporating some minor modifications such as the ones outlined below, it will be easy to achieve your goal and maintain a healthy balance diet. 1. Remove or reduce beverages high in calories. Reducing your diet by 8 ounces of sweet tea and one regular soda (i.e., Coca Cola) per day, could decrease your daily calorie count by 600 calories.
