ON THE COVER
Pittman-Stewart Wedding
I
I was dozing off early one Friday night after a long week last fall when the text came. “Can I call you tonight?” it read with no explanation. That typically means one of three things: something bad has happened, someone is pregnant, or, the most likely suspect here, someone was engaged. I wasted no time to press the phone icon next to my friend’s number and get the full account of the best kind of diamond ring-laden surprise that had come earlier than she’d expected. She was giddy, and I couldn’t remember the last time excitement filled me from head to toe like it did in the moments and days that followed. It feels like people around me get engaged all the time, but this one felt different. Because after a long season of wondering who in the world would be a good fit for this friend in all the goodness she has to offer in a relationship, getting the front row seat as man so right for her (and she for him) entered the scene and began melding his life with hers was a glorious wonder to behold—and one that makes me smile time and time again. A few weeks later my favorite season of my work year began, where we ask brides to send us pictures of their big day and write out accounts of dresses and proposals, moments they will never forget and personable décor details. In this issue we only get to share a couple hundred words of their stories, but I know that they represent a much longer story of both magical moments and a road of resolving complications and uncertainties that their friends know the full depths of, just as I know my friends’. Along with these real wedding stories we’ve rounded up all things pretty—picking out hostess gifts from local gift stores and asking photographers about trends they’ve been seeing, researching what flowers are in season when and how a new customizable wedding dress line works. But before you get to those pages, be sure to check out our stories on Hannah Scroggins’ bread making classes and the new Studio Store, a house full of work by Studio on the Tracks artists, too. They’re just as inspiring as all of the weddings we curated. Cheers to 2019, to love stories and to loving Homewood!

together. You can tell which artists are inspired by nature or music or Star Wars, and you can find the portraitists and the minimalists. Not only do these artists share their different artistic approaches in the gallery, but they also show the wide range of thought and expression within the autism spectrum. “They help me understand that everyone sees the world very differently,” art director Katie Thompson says. Since its beginning in 1989, Studio by the Tracks has sought to provide artists on the autism spectrum with the means to keep creating. Katie explains that they’re not teaching students but allowing artists to perfect their style and have a space to display and sell their work. “They might not be decided in what they’re doing, but some artists come in with a sketchbook already,” she says. Now that Studio by the Tracks opened this space in September, they’ve melded retail with their mission to honor each and every artist. “The positive thing about this space is that our artwork is accessible year-round,” Katie says. “You can ask about each artist and learn more about our mission. You have time to flip through the prints.” Their new Homewood addition is tucked away right off of Central Avenue, in what used to be local artists Becky Stayner (creator of Biscuit Leather Company) and Paul Ware’s studio. After expanding to next door, they decided to keep part of their old studio for retail, leaving two rooms open in the back. Here, behind the left blue door in their building, was the cozy space that could welcome Studio by the Tracks. They’ve now filled the rooms floor to ceiling, right behind Becky’s leather goods

Some stick with their same aesthetic while others explore new mediums to find what they best connect with. “It’s less of an art class and more of an open studio. Everyone works on individual projects,” Katie says. Artists come in with their creativity flowing, and Studio by the Tracks gives a little assistance to put that idea on paper, canvas, or clay. Katie, an artist, illustrator and graphic designer herself, says that her three years with Studio by the Tracks has changed her view of creating. “These artists are all very different from each other, and a lot of them have no real concern for the final product,” she says. “For them, it becomes the act of

National Day of Prayer Breakfast
TS TICKEPER $40 SON PER
Thursday, May 2, 8-10 a.m. Tickets go on sale Thursday, January 3 To reserve a ticket, please call (205) 665-3535 x 1031.
Honesty is the word that many have used to describe Ruth Graham as she brings a new and Biblical perspective to her journey of faith. Ruth shares her journey of faith through trials common to all, her own divorce, her teenage daughter's two pregnancies, and going back to school at 40. She is articulate and candid as she speaks of these intensely personal matters. Ruth is the author of four books, including First Steps in the Bible, a children's Bible storybook, In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart, and Legacy of Love...ings I Learned from My Mother. Ruth is the third child of Ruth and Billy Graham. The National Day of Prayer Breakfast is sponsored by the Lucille Ryals Thompson Colonial Chapel Foundation and cosponsored by the American Village Citizenship Trust.

making, less about if anyone’s going to like it. I take that and constantly refer back to it. What moves me to make art is so different now.” Even so, the resulting artwork displays that passion, and each piece appears personal to the artist who made it. Over at The Studio store, the artists receive 60 percent of any sale of their artwork, and every year, Studio by the Tracks sells thousands of dollars of art at their holiday open house. And for local art, the prices are reasonable. “We want to sell the artists’ work at a price that serves them, but we also don’t want to price out anyone,” Katie says. “We want people to come in and feel like they can talk about the art, buy it and hang it in their homes.” In their celebration of all types of artists, the Studio Store wants to celebrate every kind of buyer, too. Now that their new space has made it through the holiday hustle, Katie’s excited to celebrate the studio’s 30th birthday, probably with a bocce ball tournament, and more events like local artist pop-ups and maybe even some yoga and dance classes. But no matter what, they’ll always be creating. “Working creatively everyday in a visual, hands-on way, is such a luxury as an artist,” Katie says.

If you ask Hannah Scroggins her favorite thing about baking bread, it won’t be how it makes her house smell (though her house smells delicious), or about how it’s a healthier choice she’s making for her family (though it is). No, if you ask Hannah her favorite thing about this hobby-turnedpassion, what she loves most about baking bread is simply giving it away. Hannah, the woman behind Hannah’s Homemade, an internet-first bread-making tutorial and Homewood artisan bread making instructor, is the first to admit that her journey to making bread, good bread, was a long one. “I thought I was glutenintolerant,” says Hannah as she serves up skillet-warmed fresh sourdough topped with butter and homemade jam. “Then I ate quality bread.” Inspired, she began making her own sourdough, but it wasn’t all roses and rainbows. “After about two and a half year of terrible bread, I took away the KitchenAid and started kneading by hand,” says Hannah, who prayed as she kneaded, focusing on her growing family. “And it got better.” From there she began gifting the loaves, and friends started asking how they could HomewoodLife.com 29

for everyone who brought a glass jar. They watched her work a new loaf and sampled another at the end. “Everything evolved very organically,” she says. But soon she realized she needed a game plan. Making starter for 60 required more time (and kitchen space) than she could manage, plus, “I wanted to make a place where women could learn from one another.” Born in a family of five kids, Hannah fell in love with Homewood before she even saw it. She met her husband at JH Ranch in California, which is based in Birmingham. Jesse, a Tuscaloosa native, bought their one-story classic Homewood house on a corner lot without Hannah even seeing it. “If it’s in Homewood, I know I’ll love it,” she told him. She likens the Lake Bluff area of Chicago in the Lake Bluff where she grew up to her now-home. “We walked everywhere there, too, from the park to the ice cream shop,” she says, noting she knew she wanted her kids (Levi, age 3, and Teddy, 1) to have the same coming-ofage as she did. From that same Homewood house, she’s now launched an online class on Patreon, a website that caters to creators. “I put all my recipes for bread and tips on there, as well as favorite tricks of mine, like how to make household cleaners with essential oils,” Hannah says. “I add two or three new recipes each month that go out to my subscribers.” While users do pay a nominal fee to access the information and resources on Patreon (Hannah’s content is $2, total, for complete bread instructional videos and recipes), that goes to cover costs. “As a working mom with two kids who is also getting dinner on the table, I couldn’t stay on top of all the requests I got. Now I can send everyone to Patreon and they can get what they need,” she says. But the heart of it all is still closely tied to people. “Through my classes, I’ve met neighbors, friends and even friends’ moms,” says Hannah. “Not everyone wants to make a hobby of bread, so you know if they’re in the class, they’re probably your people.” Find Hannah on Patreon at patreon.com/ hannahshomemade.

9 DETAILS TO DAZZLE Small details can add big personality to a wedding. Here local wedding photographers share some of their favorites they are seeing trending. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM | PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

How We Met: Stephen and I (Jamie) actually met on eHarmony... and I had always sworn I would “never ever meet my husband on eHarmony.” I was the first person Stephen ever went on a date with from eHarmony, so he really won in this situation. I had to go on lots of awkward dates before finding him, but he sure was worth the wait! The Proposal: Stephen and I long distance dated for the very short time we did date (just four months before we got engaged), and I spent a lot of
time getting to know his cute town of Collierville, Tennessee. We got engaged on Dec. 21, 2017, under a beautiful tunnel of lights in the Collierville town square. He then surprised me with dinner at the restaurant where he asked me to be his girlfriend, and out popped both of our families. My beloved grandparents from California were able to be there, along with both set of our parents and Stephen’s brother and sister-in-law! The Dress: I had always dreamed
WEDDINGS of shopping for my wedding dress, probably from the time I was 5 years old. My two matrons of honor joined me as well as the best mother of the bride of all time. The day started with champagne and ended with champagne. I was staunchly against a strapless dress, until the girls at Ivory & White said, “Please just try this one on.” Of course I did, and immediately the tears started flowing. I knew in that exact moment that it was definitely the one.

How We Met: Michael and I (Amber) met in Washington, D.C. at an election party in 2016. Our mutual friend introduced us, and I thought he had just moved to D.C. I was trying to be nice and introduced him to my friends. It turns out, about half of these people were also his friends because he was moving back to D.C. He didn’t let me in on this little secret until I’d done it about 10 times. The Proposal: When we were in the Outer Banks, there is a sign as you walk out to the lighthouse that states:
“Danger: poisonous snakes, stay on the boardwalk.” Then, I noticed something black on the boardwalk in front of us and thought it was a snake. It turns out, there was a question mark taped to the boardwalk because Mike hired a photographer to be there and capture his proposal, with our dog Lola in the background. It was perfect. The Dress: My grandmother Mema, my mom and my Aunt Jamie all wore the same dress. They let me alter and modernize it so it felt like my

own. Liz at Heidi Elnora helped us take off the long-sleeves at the seam, remove some of the pleats and then add back one of the sleeves as my belt. Favorite Moment: My day started when Mike came over to my parents’ house, and we practiced our first dance for the first two hours. We danced to “Son of a Preacher Man,” because Mike is a preacher’s kid.

Cake Art provides sweet treats for all occassions By Emily Reed
When it comes to cakes, Cynthia Bertolone knows how to craft Italian treats and cuisine for all occasions. “Our cakes are famous for their perfect flavors, and beautiful presentation, especially a masterpiece of wedding cake designs and custom groom cakes,” said Cynthia, owner of Cake Art in Pelham. “We proudly go beyond desserts to create lunchtime Michael & Cynthia meals, dinners-to-go, and catering menus that please crowds and Bertolone, Owners showcase our work as authentic Italian cooks.” The bakery/bistro is located off of Pelham Parkway and offers a variety of cakes, including those for brides and grooms such as 2-tier “lightly speckled icing or naked cakes,” to a 5-tier cream cheese icing with fresh fruits detailed in laced and ornate designs. “The groom cakes are a gift from the bride that reflects his [the groom] personality and interests like a hunting tree trunk, or a barrel in his favorite cake flavors such as our tri-chocolate cake that is made with chocolate cake, chocolate icing whipped with Nutella, mini chocolate chips and chocolate ganache.” Trends in wedding cakes often range, and Cynthia said anything is possible. Oftentimes, brides will take inspiration for a cake based off of their wedding decor, decorations, the venue, wedding gowns, and dressed to create a cake design, according to Bertolone. “Fresh flowers on wedding cakes are the most popular, but geometric designs, ruffles, and earthly/rustic looks such as a naked cake can be the ‘wow’ factor for a wedding,” Cynthia said. For those looking to finalize plans on their wedding cakes, Bertolone suggests scheduling a cake tasting and consultation as early as possible to ensure no scheduling conflicts. In 2019, Bertolone will expand her business to Montevallo with the opening of two locations. One location will be a coffee house named C’s Cakes and Coffee House, where lattes, cappuccinos, soups, sandwiches, salads and more will be served with private rooms/rentals for office meetings or rehearsal breakfasts and lunch for weddings. The second location will be an Italian restaurant and bar where Cynthia’s husband, Michael Bertolone, will be creating Italian cuisine. Cynthia said wedding parties can schedule their dinner rehearsals at the restaurant, and cake tastings and consultations can be performed at C’s Cakes and Coffee House in addition to Cake Art in Pelham.

The Proposal: Cliff set his soon-tobe fiancé on a scavenger hunt across Birmingham. Megan was given handwritten notes from Cliff at various important places during their relationship around the city. At each stop a close friend of Megan’s delivered the next note “clue.” Then in downtown Homewood, Megan’s close friend and future matron of honor flew from Houston to deliver her last note and take Megan to Cliff. Cliff had decorated Megan’s back deck, and there in private he proposed. Afterward, a huge party
was held at Megan’s parents’ house with the couple’s family and friends. The Dress: Megan had a piece of her mother’s veil monogrammed in blue with her initials and wedding date and sewed it into her dress. Her mother had saved her baby blanket she never parted with as a child, and this was wrapped around her bridal bouquet. Megan also carried a handkerchief that was carried by her maternal greatgreat grandmother, great grandmother, grandmother and mother on their wedding days.
WEDDINGS Favorite Moment: While waiting for family members to finish pictures, Cliff and Megan were able to have some alone time in the sanctuary before the ceremony. They still talk about how thankful they were for just a few minutes of sweet time together. Favorite Detail: To play off of their new last name, different “bells” sent them off at the end of the night. Guests could choose either a silver butlers bell for the groom or a Mississippi State cowbell for the bride since she is an alum.

How You Met: Jonathan coached a 12U travel baseball team and invited me (Hollie) to come watch one of their games at Veterans Park in October 2017. We are both big baseball fans and “hit” it off from there. Our first official date was Taco Mama takeout and watching Game 1 of the World Series. Favorite Details: With me working in preschool ministry, we wanted to share our day with those most special to me: my sweet preschool friends. We had a small ceremony with our closest family and friends at Haven, and then a
reception at Dawson Family of Faith that was open to our preschoolers and their families. Tiny Weddings handled all of the vendors from the flowers and decorations to the cake. Our kid-friendly reception had a kids’ corner with stamps and crayons and photo booth where they could dress up as princes and princesses. We also had to tie in our love of baseball! Jonathan’s groom’s table consisted of peanuts, cracker jacks and heart-shaped baseball cookies made by one of our preschool moms. Since

How We Met: Laura heard about Sammy for months before meeting him. He was the superintendent for the construction of a co-worker’s house, a man who loved Jesus and enjoyed working out. After playing a little phone tag, Sammy and Laura connected and talked 2.5 hours, asking all the “first date” questions. A casual date was scheduled at Davenport’s Pizza. Laura walked in unsure of who she was meeting for dinner, but Sammy recognized her quickly, thinking she was more
beautiful in person than in the picture he had been sent by the friend who set them up. The Proposal: On New Year’s Eve 2017, Sammy and Laura planned to go on a casual hike in the bitter cold. When reaching an overlook, Sammy pulled out a selfie stick and propped it up in his backpack pretending to take a picture. Little did Laura know that Sammy was videoing what was about to be his proposal. After many sweet words, Sammy tearfully got down on one knee
WEDDINGS asking Laura to marry him. Laura screamed for joy and was shocked by the beautiful ring Sammy picked out by himself. Sammy and Laura celebrated with family and friends prior to ringing in 2018 together! Favorite Moment: Sammy and Laura both agree the first look was their favorite moment from the wedding day. Sammy was very emotional and grateful to have seen his bride walk down the aisle without the production and crowd of the ceremony. Laura gave Sammy a card and couldn’t stop smiling.

How We Met: At Auburn my (Genny’s) friend Kelly kept mentioning that I really needed to meet her brother. He came to Auburn to visit her for her 20th birthday, and we finally got to meet and began to date long distance. The Proposal: On our first date and many dates following, Kohl and I ate at Acre in Auburn whenever he came to town. A year and a half later, Acre was closed for the holidays, but Kohl surprised me and planned a beautiful quiet evening there with one waitress, one chef and a custom menu,
full of our favorite items. Later that evening we celebrated with family and friends at my grandparents’ home in Birmingham. Favorite Details: Each groomsman wore a beaver fur black cowboy hat with their black and white tuxedo and black cowboy boots. Kohl wears his cowboy hat and boots to formal events in Houston, and I believe it was the perfect touch for our wedding day. Even some guests who were not from Texas wore hats to the reception. I can’t tell you how many people, local to

How We Met: Jonathan and I (Lyndsey) met in 2011 when I started as a hostess at Highlands Bar & Grill. He had bartended there for years, and I quickly noticed how warm and friendly he was. One night he handed me a folded cocktail napkin as I walked through the bar. It was a game of hangman with ten spaces, and I filled in a guess and dropped it off every time I seated another table. It took me an embarrassingly long time to understand that he was asking for my
phone number. I was there for only a few months, and I think that job was God’s way to bring us together. The Proposal: Six years later, Jonathan took me to the site of our first kiss in Five Points and got down on one knee. We had picked out a beautiful vintage ring almost a year earlier at Levy’s that I was wondering if I’d ever see again. Favorite Moments: Our 13-year old (step)son Pierce’s face during the ceremony, getting ready at our
WEDDINGS photographer Hillary’s studio with my mom and girlfriends, my Granny seated in her special chair, and seeing all of Jonathan’s friends and regulars in the crowd. Also I loved that my favorite teacher from Homewood High School, Melissa Dameron-Vines, agreed to do a reading during the ceremony. Favorite Details: Eucalyptus everywhere and walking down the aisle to Chuck King’s trumpet solo of “It Had to Be You.” Also I loved the tossed lavender as we left the reception.

How We Met: We met while serving at Summer Beach Project, a college ministry through Campus Outreach. That following year at Samford University in Homewood, we sparked a friendship. The Proposal: I (Jordan) planned it around the weekend of Step Sing, Kate’s favorite Samford tradition. Both families would be in town to watch my sister and Kate’s brother perform on Saturday night. I had Kate’s friend and eventual maid of honor ask her to lunch after church on Sunday. However, instead of driving her to lunch, she pulled off of Highway 31 to
the Sibyl Temple parking lot where I was waiting in the rain. Kate got out, and I led her up the steps to the temple where I asked her to marry me. We then met our families for lunch at Avo in Mountain Brook and then went back to Kate’s apartment for a surprise party. The Dress: I (Kate) interned at Engaged Wedding Library in Edgewood while in college, and got to help the owner Steph with the Engaged Collective bridal show a week after we got engaged. I sent a photo of a Heidi Elnora gown to my mom, and it ended up being the dress
WEDDINGS
I fell in love with at Heidi’s downtown shop. Favorite Moments: I (Kate) loved getting to go around to every table at our reception and greet all of our guests who had traveled to celebrate with us. Our florist built a beautiful wall of vines in the venue, and that was my favorite detail. Jordan’s favorite moment was our first dance to “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton. What We Are Doing Now: We currently live in Vestavia Hills. Jordan is working for a real estate development firm in Homewood, and I work as a graphic designer.

How We Met: Phillip and I met through a mutual friend who is also a Homewood grad. A year later, I ran into Phillip at SlossFest randomly. We were both pleasantly surprised to see each other again! Phillip asked me out that same weekend. The Proposal: Phillip led me on a scavenger hunt that took me to all of the locations in Birmingham that were special to us. It ended at Vulcan where both our parents and close friends were waiting. The last clue was for me to go to the top of Vulcan and to look
over the railing for a surprise. That is where I saw a giant sign below with the words “Will you marry me?” written in Spanish. (Side note: I can speak Spanish.) The Dress: I loved my dress designed by the fabulous Heidi Elnora. My veil was a custom piece Heidi and her team made for me. We took lace from my mother’s wedding dress and they sewed it onto the outer part of the veil. Also I wore the earrings my grandfather gave to my mother when
WEDDINGS she turned 16. He passed away when I was very young so this was a way to honor him and to know he was with me on my wedding day. Favorite Moments: I have long been obsessed with boys choir ensembles, so having the Birmingham Boys Choir sing for us and our guests was an absolute honor. At Iron City, Phillip surprised me with a slideshow he made with photos of us, our families and friends.

MY HOMEWOOD MEREDITH DRENNEN
Homewood Chamber of Commerce Executive Director
Tasty Eats
Taste of Homewood There is no better place to fellowship with your fellow Homewoodians and support local restaurants than Taste of Homewood. With 30 restaurants, bakeries, coffee houses and distributors, you can taste some amazing dishes and try new things! This year the date is set for Jan. 31 at Rosewood Hall.
Lunch Treat
Homewood Gourmet’s Cobb Salad This is most overlooked dish in Homewood, but I could order one every day. Once, owner and chef Chris Zapalowski made one as a side dish for me on request.
Peace & Quiet
Sunday Walks My dog, Patton, and I have a few routes, but I love talking him down Broadway on Sunday afternoons. We walk past the lot where my grandmother grew up and always wave to her neighbors. On days where my husband joins me, we take our son as well. Weekday walks sometimes feel hurried, but Sunday afternoons can be nice and leisurely!
For a Little One
Covenant Classical School Our 2-year-old son goes to school at CCS, and we love the care and attention he gets from the teachers and staff. In the mornings, they have a coffee station for us—caffeine is the best friend of a sleepdeprived mom! Photo by Love Be Photography
Red or White
The Pig’s Wine Selection The Piggly Wiggly is Homewood’s gathering place. What a better place to learn about wine varietals than where you can bump into your friends? Wine manager Andrew Brim is always a great help for any event we may have and has recommended some great finds, and their Friday evening wine tastingsw are a treat too.
