FROM THE EDITOR

Madoline with one of her favorite brides.

ON THE COVER

I

I was dozing off early one Friday night after a long week last fall when the text came. “Can I call you tonight?” it read with no explanation. That typically means one of three things: something bad has happened, someone is pregnant, or, the most likely suspect here, someone is engaged. I wasted no time to press the phone icon next to my friend’s number and get the full account of the best kind of diamond ring-laden surprise that had come earlier than she’d expected. She was giddy, and I couldn’t remember the last time excitement filled me from head to toe like it did in the moments and days that followed. It feels like people around me get engaged all the time, but this one felt different. Because after a long season of wondering who in the world would be a good fit for this friend in all the goodness she has to offer in a relationship, getting the front row seat as man so right for her (and she for him) entered the scene and began melding his life with hers was a glorious wonder to behold—and one that makes me smile time and time again. A few weeks later my favorite season of my work year began, where we ask brides to send us pictures of their big day and write out accounts of dresses and proposals, moments they will never forget and personable décor details. In this issue we only get to share a couple hundred words of their stories, but I know that they represent a much longer story of both magical moments and a road of resolving complications and uncertainties that their friends know the full depths of, just as I know my friends’. Along with these real wedding stories we’ve rounded up all things pretty—picking out hostess gifts from local gift stores and asking photographers about trends they’ve been seeing, researching what flowers are in season when and how a new customizable wedding dress line works. But before you get to those pages, be sure to check out our “itineraries” for healthy Saturday staycations in each of the villages and the story of the mother-daughter team behind Charlotte Allison Jewelry too. They’re just as inspiring as all of the weddings we curated. Cheers to 2019, to love stories, and to loving our community and all its people!

“ ” THE QUESTION

What’s your favorite memory from your wedding? We had a big fat Greek wedding, and one of my favorite memories was my 89-year-old great aunt leading the traditional Greek dancing. - Marcie Prescott

In 1976, Mitzi and I had our ceremony in front of the grand stone fireplace in my parents’ log cabin in Roebuck that was built in the early 1900s by the Italian stone masons that built the original base for Vulcan. - Johnny Penuel

Tied (tightly) to ribbons and tucked inside my bouquet were the wedding rings of my mother, mother-in-law and all of our grandmothers (living and deceased).

We had only met the people at the little church that morning. They were having a going away party, they took one of the cakes and gave to us for our wedding cake.

We were married in a home on Old Leeds Rd. Our reception was in a kitchen I designed!

Being at the altar at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, worshipping our God who brought us together, and humbly receiving His blessings in the same place where we met.

CLASSIC ELEGANCE

How a mother-daughter jewelry design team is blending modern with traditional. BY TRACEY RECTOR PHOTOS BY REBECCA WISE & CONTRIBUTED MountainBrookMagazine.com 19

Allison Morgan and Elizabeth Read started Charlotte Allison Jewelry together.

A

Allison Morgan and Elizabeth Read share many similarities: a quick wit, a love for storytelling, and a keen eye for beauty and design. They frequently interrupt each other and occasionally even wear the exact same expression on their faces. It’s not surprising really, since the two jewelry designers are also mother and daughter. Together Allison and Elizabeth are the creative force behind Charlotte Allison Jewelry—a partnership tied together with equal measure of determination and inspiration. The duo have been working together for several years, and big things are on the horizon for the family business.

20 January/February 2019

“Our vision is that our jewelry will be widely accessible in 2019,” daughter Elizabeth says. Allison agrees, saying “2019 is our year.” A FAMILY TRADITION Allison brings a wealth of experience to the design venture. She operated Allison’s Custom Jewelry in Mountain Brook Village for years, traveling frequently to Bangkok and Hong Kong in search of just the right stones and materials for the pieces she designed for her clients. Along the way, Elizabeth and her sisters developed a love

for art because of their constant exposure to their mother’s beautiful designs. “She would bring home these amazing pieces,” Elizabeth says. “They were works of art, really.” It was while her girls were young that Allison was inspired to create a ring design that she envisioned as the centerpiece of her business. She obtained a patent and spent years trying to get her design into production. Frustrated by her inability to find a means of production that met her exacting standards, she stepped back from the business. “I’m a perfectionist,” she says. “And so, I put it aside. I retired.” But not for long. “She always said, ‘I’m going to come back to it. I’m going to do my ring,’” Elizabeth says. And five years ago mother and daughter started afresh with Charlotte Allison Jewelry—a line with a name that represents five generations of the strong women in their family. Initially, Elizabeth didn’t see herself in the role of designer. With her business background and her degree in finance, she imagined she would be primarily involved in sales and marketing. But it wasn’t long before she found herself giving expression to what she calls the “creative side I had that was always dying to do something different.” She credits her mother’s experience with helping to refine her vision. “I would take her these drawings and she would say, ‘That looks really pretty, but you know that is completely impossible to do with that particular stone.’” “We’re a great combination of forces,” Allison says. TRADITIONAL, MODERN, SOPHISTICATED Allison and Elizabeth focused at first on Allison’s ring design, once again seeking out a way to produce it that was efficient while maintaining the standards they desired. But along the way, they found their priorities changing. “(My) mentor said, ‘You know, sometimes the

thing is not the thing,’” Elizabeth recalls, admitting she didn’t initially take the advice well. “I was like, ‘What do you mean the thing is not the thing? The ring is why we’re doing this!’” But after consulting with other industry professionals, they began to see the possibilities in expanding their designs to include pendants, earrings and bracelets. The result is their first collection, the Elliptic Collection. “Elliptic” is their word for the oval shape of the stones that they are both drawn to. “It’s feminine, yet strong,” Elizabeth explains. One stone that features prominently in the collection is the rainbow moonstone, an almost translucent stone that shows a slight bit of color and can be worn with almost anything because of its more neutral presentation. For these designers, inspiration is everywhere – nature, fashion, even childhood memories. Their second collection is inspired by the leaded glass window over the front door of Elizabeth’s grandmother’s house where she visited as a child. The front of the house faced west. “In the afternoon when the sun came through that window, the foyer would be lit with rainbows,” Elizabeth recalls. “We would try to catch the colors on our fingers. It was magical.” That memory sparked the Spectra Collection, which is more colorful and allows Elizabeth to experiment more with using enamel in

the pieces. “Enamel really allows you to expand your color palette,” she says. “If you have a favorite color you want to use and there is no natural stone that is that color, enamel is a great way to add that color.” Allison and Elizabeth are passionate in their belief that jewelry helps define a woman, noting that even women who aren’t really into jewelry usually wear it. “It helps tell the story of your life and your style. Jewelry can tell others you’re married, when your birthday is, if you have grandchildren,” Elizabeth says. Allison adds that “jewelry speaks about you at least as much as clothing does because you don’t change out your jewelry the way you do your clothes.” Their collaboration results in a seamless blending of the modern and the traditional in a cohesive and distinguishable style. Mothers and daughters working together can lead to a few disagreements along the way, but “In our biggest disagreements, we’ve found that we are usually saying the same thing, just in a different way,” Elizabeth says. At the end of the day, they agree that question becomes, “Do we both love it? Would we both wear it?” “We’ve found that if we bring our personal creative preferences together we can design a piece that we both really like,” Elizabeth says, “and if we do that, there’s a strong likelihood it will be successful.”

THREE DAYS, THREE VILLAGES Get off to a healthy start in the New Year with these itineraries for fun-ямБlled Saturday staycations. BY DEANNA PIZITZ PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED MountainBrookMagazine.com 29

Eleven Eleven Clothiers

MPower, Photo by Todd Helzer

Day No. 1

Mountain Brook Village on Foot MORNING WORKOUT Start your day at MPower on Canterbury Road with a Megaformer Pilates Class at 9 a.m. Your first class is free, and I’d recommend this 50-minute challenge to get your blood flowing and heart pumping. MIDMORNING WALK + SHOP Next cool down with a brisk walk around Mountain Brook Village. You should stop at my favorite active wear store Eleven Eleven Clothiers while you’re out. LUNCHTIME FUEL Finish your walk at Brick and Tin, where you can refuel your body and get your fill of local and sustainable ingredients. You really can’t go wrong with any of the items here, but my favorite 30 January/February 2019

combination is the Butternut Squash Soup and the Autumn Vegetable Salad. If you are having a low-carb day, start with the Deviled Eggs & Pickles minus the saltine crackers and follow it with the Bluebird Salad. To make the salad the healthiest, swap the fried chicken for the roasted and order the dressing on the side. I would stay away from the grain salad unless you are heading home to take a nap. I am not sure what is in it but it puts me right to sleep. EARLY AFTERNOON WALK After you get done with your meal, head out and explore more village stores with an eye out for post-holiday sales. If you are over shopping head over to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and walk around. Camellias, hollies, orchids, pansies, tea olives, winter hazels, winter honeysuckles and wintersweets are all in bloom in January, and Asian magnolias, fringe flowers, Lenten roses, mahonias and quinces will follow in February. And there’s no fee to enter. LATE AFTERNOON MASSAGE AND MORE After your walk, head across the street to The Grand Bohemian for a massage at the Poseidon

Spa. Call ahead (205-203-4740) to make a reservation for a Poseidon Signature Massage with customizable pressure and a choice of reflexology or aromatherapy ($120 for 50 minutes, $180 for 80 minutes), or a Relaxation Massage with therapeutic botanicals ($105 for 50 minutes, $165 for 80 minutes). After your massage take a shower and head to the Art Gallery to gaze at work by local artists. My favorite artist in there right now is Amy Crew, whose paintings create depth by working in thin layers using bold colors, earth tones, or a more monochromatic palette. Then head to their rooftop bar—research shows a glass of red wine may help prevent coronary artery disease after all. If it’s not too cold you can sit outside by the fire too.

DINNER TIME Now that you’re relaxed, you can finish your evening with a healthy dinner from Habitat Feed and Social without leaving the Grand Bohemian. The menu changes due to the season, but I’d recommend starting with the Habitat Charcuterie & Regional Cheese, featuring stone fruit chutney, Habitat pickles, Baguette, Thomasville Tomme and Asher Blue, and then ordering the Pan Roasted Gulf Cobra, which comes with a healthy serving of veggies (warm freekah salad, mustard greens, baby turnips, pickled beets and a preserved lemon vinaigrette). Steer clear of the dessert – you do not want to undo all the good you’ve done. This is a great time to call it a day.

KID-FRIENDLY LUNCH Grab the kids and head to Taco Mama. I love how fresh their ingredients are and that I can make my own burrito bowl with the healthiest items and still stay on track. My favorite is to build my own burrito bowl with barbacoa, pickled jalapenos, onions, avocado, pico de gallo, lots of MORNING WORKOUT After a slow morning at home, head to TriFusion lettuce, tomatoes and last the fresh salsa right by Otey’s Tavern for Yogafusion class at 10 ranchera—no carbs included. Stay away from the a.m. The class incorporates pilates and barre plus chips – just don’t order them so you won’t be adds a series of abdominal toners to strengthen tempted. Another great option would be Mama’s core muscles and lengthening stretches for a Salad; I would leave off the croutons and add

avocado for healthy fats. Stick with water to drink too. In fact if you will only change one thing in 2019, I would encourage you to drink more water.

Dinner

AFTERNOON OUTDOORS Grab the kids and head to Crestline Park to burn off some of their energy or maybe even head over to Crestline Field to throw the football or Frisbee. HEALTHY DINNER TO-GO Once you have worn out the kids, grab dinner for the family at Dinner. My absolute favorite item there is the Turkey Meatballs topped with house-made tomato sauce. My husband also loves the Panko Parmesan Chicken with its lemon caper sauce, but if you are watching those carbs, I would skip this. The pan-roasted Salmon is a great healthy choice too. You can’t go wrong with any of the sides except maybe skip the Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese and Twice Baked Potato. I like to add a salad with this and usually throw one together from my own refrigerator. MOVIE NIGHT IN Before leaving the village, stop by the Piggly Wiggly for a bag of Skinny Pop popcorn and maybe a dark chocolate bar to have a small piece

of if you don’t choose to skip dessert. Once you get home, it’s time to stream or plug-in a movie for your family. My absolute favorite to watch, especially when my children were little, was The Chronicles of Narnia.

WHAT TO ORDER One thing I recommend to clients when I am coaching them with their health is to make sure they are being very mindful of what they are eating. Try to stay away from processed foods and eat real plantbased food. So if it has a mother (think eggs, chicken, beef, fish, etc.) or it is grown, then it is a good choice. We get off track eating out when we indulge in too much bread (just tell them not to even bring the bread basket), too much alcohol, and then dessert. It doesn’t mean you can’t ever have any of those things, but try to have a bite of dessert and maybe just one lighter cocktail (my choice is Tito’s and club soda with a lime). I believe you should do everything in moderation. Deanna Pizitz blogs at Well & Worthy Life and runs health coaching programs. “I love working with clients on their health goals by helping them become the best version of themselves, and that looks different for everybody,” she says. Her group program is based in a Facebook group where she teaches nutrition and fitness strategies, and she also conducts one-on-one coaching. Learn more at wellandworthylife.com. Photo by Mary Fehr

Honesty is the word that many have used to describe Ruth Graham as she brings a new and Biblical perspective to her journey of faith. Ruth shares her journey of faith through trials common to all, her own divorce, her teenage daughter's two pregnancies, and going back to school at 40. She is articulate and candid as she speaks of these intensely personal matters. Ruth is the author of four books, including First Steps in the Bible, a children's Bible storybook, In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart, and Legacy of Love...Things I Learned from My Mother. Ruth is the third child of Ruth and Billy Graham. Day No. 3

Walking in the English Village Hills MORNING WALK WITH A VIEW English Village is one of my favorite places to walk. Park your car at the zoo and the follow this route: Head up Cahaba Road towards Key Circle, make a right on Argyle Road and loop around onto Stratford Road for a beautiful view of the city. Once you are back at Key Circle, head onto Aberdeen Road, and from there take a right onto Crest Road, where you’ll find another wonderful view of the city. Follow Crest back around to Aberdeen Road, and head down Lanark Road. Follow Lanark down towards Cahaba Road and take a right to head to Chez Lu Lu. LIGHT LUNCH After you have gotten your appetite up, stop at Chez Lu Lu to break your fast. (I often coach clients in a form of intermittent fasting where you don’t eat until noon and then stop eating at 8 p.m. so your body uses the food it consumes more efficiently.) You really can’t go wrong with any of the salads or soups here. My favorite is the Lentil Soup and the Goat in the Orchard salad. If you are on a low carb day, steer clear of their wonderful bread, but if you aren’t try to limit yourself to two pieces dipped in olive oil so you don’t undo all of your good work.

ZOO STOP You might want to do some shopping after lunch while you are in English Village or indulge in a haircut, massage, facial or manicure at Tonya Jones SalonSpa. And/or since you’re already parked at the Birmingham Zoo, why not go inside too? Even if you don’t have kids, it’s still fun to walk around and see the animals in action, especially the elephants. DINNER OUT Now, head home grab your shower relax for a bit. The best is yet to come. Then head back to the village for a night at Root to Tail. Their menu changes by season, I like to start with the Brussels Sprouts, roasted and served with smoked bacon, Parmesan and white balsamic gastrique, and then the Beet Salad with young greens, goat cheese, toasted cashews and a white balsamic vinaigrette. You can’t go wrong with the Grouper or the Roasted Chicken, even the Braised Beef Shank would be a good option. If you are watching your carbs after overindulging in the holidays, I would ask your waiter or waitress to leave off the grits or potatoes and ask for extra vegetables or the cauliflower rice.

9 DETAILS TO DAZZLE Small details can add big personality to a wedding. Here local wedding photographers share some of their favorites they are seeing trending. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM | PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

How We Met: I (Will) met Ashley in the fall of our freshman year at Auburn. We were fast friends, with lots of mutual friends. I came to see Ashley as a great friend and confidant, but as our last semester in Auburn started, I began seeing her as something much more – a life-giving, smart, poised, beautiful, funny, mature, salt of the earth, Jesus-loving woman. I realized that our years of friendship had just been preparing us for something far greater. So, one night I went over to her house

in Auburn and asked her out. The Dress: Heidi Elnora specifically designed my (Ashley’s) dress, and it was exactly my vision. I wanted a classic, timeless dress that still had some drama. The satin fabric, plunging back and buttons made my dress feel so elegant. Favorite Moments: When the church doors swung open, I locked eyes with Will at the end of the long church aisle. Any bit of nerves I had disappeared, and I was filled with so much excitement! During the

WEDDINGS ceremony, my sister, Rev. Lyndsay Cogdill Clark, gave a personalized homily directly to Will and me, and it felt like such an intimate moment at the altar. Favorite Details: My dad and I walked down the aisle to his favorite hymn, “Come Thou Fount,” played by a violinist (Kelsie Baer) and pianist (family friend Rev. Kim Davis). It was the sweetest moment to have him by my side as that song was playing—it represented a lot of my childhood memories with him.

How We Met: I (Dabney) walked into history class at UAB the first day and couldn’t help but notice that the teacher’s assistant was quite attractive and had an awesome sense of style— his jacket had elbow pads and bowtie. When I handed in my final exam, Ty handed me a folded piece of notebook paper saying he wanted to get to know me better, asking me for coffee and giving me his number. Favorite Moment: As we were exiting the church, we were overwhelmed with joy and walked out

to a perfect day into downtown Birmingham, and there, my cousin was standing on the curb in mirrored sunglasses holding open the door of my dad’s suburban and blaring celebration music at top volume. Favorite Details: After the rehearsal dinner, some friends of my parents told us they had “special shoes” for us. We had no clue what they were talking about, but then we opened them and were instructed to turn them on. The soles of both pairs lit up with a variety of settings and

WEDDINGS

came with a charger thereby ensuring everlasting light-up shoes. We ended up wearing them for the wedding reception. I also wore my mother-in-law’s veil, which she saved even though she didn’t have a daughter just in case one of her son’s brides wanted to wear it one day, and I did. She made me an embroidered handkerchief with my new initials to carry with me too. We also used the engraved toasting goblets my grandparents used in their wedding.

Cake Art provides sweet treats for all occassions By Emily Reed

When it comes to cakes, Cynthia Bertolone knows how to craft Italian treats and cuisine for all occasions. “Our cakes are famous for their perfect flavors, and beautiful presentation, especially a masterpiece of wedding cake designs and custom groom cakes,” said Cynthia, owner of Cake Art in Pelham. “We proudly go beyond desserts to create lunchtime Michael & Cynthia meals, dinners-to-go, and catering menus that please crowds and Bertolone, Owners showcase our work as authentic Italian cooks.” The bakery/bistro is located off of Pelham Parkway and offers a variety of cakes, including those for brides and grooms such as 2-tier “lightly speckled icing or naked cakes,” to a 5-tier cream cheese icing with fresh fruits detailed in laced and ornate designs. “The groom cakes are a gift from the bride that reflects his [the groom] personality and interests like a hunting tree trunk, or a barrel in his favorite cake flavors such as our tri-chocolate cake that is made with chocolate cake, chocolate icing whipped with Nutella, mini chocolate chips and chocolate ganache.” Trends in wedding cakes often range, and Cynthia said anything is possible. Oftentimes, brides will take inspiration for a cake based off of their wedding decor, decorations, the venue, wedding gowns, and dressed to create a cake design, according to Bertolone. “Fresh flowers on wedding cakes are the most popular, but geometric designs, ruffles, and earthly/rustic looks such as a naked cake can be the ‘wow’ factor for a wedding,” Cynthia said. For those looking to finalize plans on their wedding cakes, Bertolone suggests scheduling a cake tasting and consultation as early as possible to ensure no scheduling conflicts. In 2019, Bertolone will expand her business to Montevallo with the opening of two locations. One location will be a coffee house named C’s Cakes and Coffee House, where lattes, cappuccinos, soups, sandwiches, salads and more will be served with private rooms/rentals for office meetings or rehearsal breakfasts and lunch for weddings. The second location will be an Italian restaurant and bar where Cynthia’s husband, Michael Bertolone, will be creating Italian cuisine. Cynthia said wedding parties can schedule their dinner rehearsals at the restaurant, and cake tastings and consultations can be performed at C’s Cakes and Coffee House in addition to Cake Art in Pelham. How We Met: Morgan and Michael first met in the fall of 2010 at Mountain Brook High School when a mutual friend set them up for the Twilight Ball. Shortly thereafter, they began dating. Their relationship continued to develop while at Ole Miss together. The Dress: Morgan’s wedding dress came from a little shop in downtown Boston. She was visiting for her brother’s graduation from Tufts when she found it. She tried on a few, per usual, but once she’d tried this one on, few dresses stood a chance. Having the family there was

the perfect way to find her dream dress. Favorite Details: Some of their favorite details were the desserts. For the groom’s cake by CakEffect, the artist created a three-part cake consisting of some of Michael’s favorite foods: a burger, burrito, and an added crawfish boil which was the perfect surprise for both of them. In addition to the cake, there was a wall of Seattle Chocolates as well as delicious ice cream sammies from Big Spoon Creamery. What We Are Doing Now: The Reshas have bought their first house in

WEDDINGS Tacoma, Washington, where they now live. Morgan is finishing her audiology degree, while Michael serves in the Army at Joint Base Lewis McChord. They have been able to spend the summer hiking and camping across the Pacific Northwest and are excited to ski and snowboard this winter.

How We Met: Harrison and I (Elizabeth) met the summer before starting school at Mountain Brook Junior High. Harrison asked me to “be his girlfriend” at age 15, and we dated throughout high school and college. The Proposal: After college one of our favorite dates became going on hikes at Red Mountain Park. On a random Tuesday morning, Harrison caught me completely off guard by proposing in the middle of one of our hikes! There was no one else around, and it was perfect.

The Dress: I knew from the start that I would be wearing my mom’s gorgeous lace veil from Belgium. When it came time to pick my dress, I loved how the veil looked with a simple, classic gown. Favorite Details: Our wedding was on St. Patrick’s Day, so we decided to embrace it. Our koozies were green with four-leaf clovers, and all of our guests were given green beads and flashing green ice cubes. Upon arriving at our reception, I learned that there was an artist doing a live painting. My

grandmother had arranged the whole thing. The painting currently hangs over our fireplace, and it will forever have a special place in our home. What We Are Doing Now: Harrison is pursuing his passion for coaching football and is also in his first year of teaching ninth-grade English. I told him to tell his students that you never know, you could find your husband or wife this year! I am pursuing a career as a nurse anesthetist.

How We Met: We were in computer science class together at the University of Alabama, learning how to code computers (neither of our strong suits). Hayden will always say I (Douglas) am smarter because I helped him pass the class. The Proposal: On the first day I arrived at the beach we had plans with his family to go out to eat to celebrate his sister’s graduation. Before dinner we decided to have a glass of wine on their pier. The next thing I knew he was on one knee proposing!

The Dress: I fell in love with two dresses and loved different things about each one. Kelly Michelle at Carriage House saw my vision and worked with the two designers to combine the bow I was dying for with the dress I was in love with. Favorite Moments: I am a second-grade teacher at a Birmingham City School, and several of my students were program attendants in our wedding. Also, my grandfather suffers from dementia and it was very touch and go if he would be able to be at the

WEDDINGS ceremony or the reception. During the reception, I looked over and saw him dancing with a tambourine in hand. Lastly, I think my favorite moment from our wedding was just being able to dance the night away with my husband and all of our loved ones. We did not want the night to end! Favorite Detail: Our first dance song was “Have a Little Faith in Me,” which was the song on the radio before Hayden proposed.

How We Met: We grew up together but were barely friends until high school. We went to separate colleges and didn’t think much about each other until we ran into each other over Christmas break. A few months later we were officially dating long distance while I (Ginny) worked in Nashville and Hampe stayed in Birmingham. The Proposal: It was the day after Thanksgiving, and I thought we were going to get a drink at The Club before we ate dinner with my family. He proposed at sunset, and afterward our

families came running out. A few minutes later a bunch of my friends from out of town surprised me, and we celebrated all night overlooking downtown. Favorite Moments: Turning around in the church and seeing everyone we loved staring back at us, and getting on stage with the band at the reception and my siblings and I singing “Dancing Queen.” Also, my parents were married in the same church almost 30 years before, and I had the privilege of wearing my mom’s veil.

WEDDINGS

Favorite Details: “In Christ Alone” is my favorite hymn, and everyone at the church stood up and worshiped together, which I thought was very special. Since none of my grandparents are living, we used my grandmother’s wedding dress and handkerchief around my bouquet. We also used their silver to cut and eat our cake, and we drank out of her silver goblets at the reception. I also loved the light-up dance floor and the flower walls at the reception.

How We Met: We actually met through mutual friends on a summer weekend at Lake Martin back in 2012. However, we did not talk again until one of his friends set us up on my college formal. We had a blast together, so we started to get to know each other, dated a year after and then got engaged four years later. This gave Lake Martin even more meaning when we decided to get married there. The Proposal: We were early for what I (Hanna) thought was a dinner reservation. On the way to the

restaurant, Matthew casually drove up to our favorite lookout spot on a mountain. Before I knew it, we were engaged and there was actually no dinner reservation! Favorite Moment: My favorite moment of the wedding day is walking down the aisle and seeing Matthew for the first time. I was honored to have my dad give me away to a man who I know would lead me well for the rest of my life. It was an emotional moment that I will never forget! Favorite Details: My favorite

WEDDINGS wedding detail was the three floral hoops that hung from the ceiling of the white tent. My wedding planner had a vision, my florist executed, and it was perfect. They added an elegance to the tent that caught the attention of everyone who walked into our reception. What We Are Doing Now: I have a mathematics tutoring business, work at MPower Pilates studio, and manage a health and wellness business through Arbonne.

How We Met: We met through mutual friends at the jamboree my first week of tenth grade, his senior year. We didn’t start actually dating for a year or so, but have been together since. The Dress: Having been a wedding planner at Mariee Ami for so long, I (Emma) had seen so many dresses and nothing seemed to stand out. After trying on many and going back, Ivory and White worked with me to create a custom dress with a top by Lela Rose and skirt by Monique Lhuillier. It was

the perfect combination and I loved that I could wear my mom’s veil with it! Favorite Details: My mom, my sisters and I snuck up to the sacristy and cracked the door during the prelude so we could listen to the Birmingham Boys Choir. I also found a fabulous Schumacher fabric that was used for the custom cake table linen, and carried it through with the pillows on the banquettes and the tiebacks on the drapery. Mary at Mariee Ami took the save the date design and used it for

the custom dance floor and the tray liners, and she pulled a lily of the valley from that design that was used on koozies, matches, wax seals and more as an ode to my lily of the valley bouquet. For late night, we had to have Pritchard’s favorite: Chick-fil-A chicken biscuits with stickers that said “Les Reich Mor Allen” in their iconic font.

76 January/February 2019

The Proposal: As Ralfe and I (Katherine) were walking along the Seine side of the Jardin des Tuileries on a trip to Paris, I was noticing how private it felt when Ralfe grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. There, just us in the stillness between the trees with the Louvre behind us, my best friend asked me to marry him. The Dress: The skirt of my Rita Vinieris dress was so light and airy I couldn’t help but spin around in it. Then, my family traveled to Italy for a trip shortly after our engagement, and I

woke up to a phone call in the middle of the night our time to my sister screaming, “We found your veil!” They had come across a hand-crafted lace veil by Emilia Burano in Venice. It means even more that it’s now part of our family and could be worn by my sisters on their wedding days. Favorite Details: The invitations set the tone unfolding the rest of the details that fell in line with the organic, relaxed feel of our wedding. Our wedding crest was consistent throughout the rest of the paper suite and envelope

WEDDINGS seal as well as other details. Copper was used as an accent color from the seal on our invitations to the candles lighting the reception. The drapery, furnishings and floral design all came together to create a feeling that the outdoors had been brought inside. We had the feeling like we were in the middle of a garden saying our vows and dancing the night away.

MY MOUNTAIN BROOK VINCE SCHILLECI

Dad of Two + Lawyer + Part-time Soccer Coach + Soap Maker

Pizza Time

Davenport’s I have been going to Davenport’s for their perfect pizza since I was born. Although my kids love the arcade, they come running when the pies hit our table.

For a Stroll

Resting Spot

Jemison Trail The area where Jemison crosses Watkins Brook just after Watkins Road is my family’s favorite spot to cool off in when we’re out on the trail during the summer. If the water is down, you can sit on the rocks and rest your feet in the water.

Picnic Perfect

Cahaba River Park Gazebo There is no better place to have a weekend picnic with your family than the gazebo and picnic tables overlooking the Cahaba River!

A Scoop Please

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream If you have never tried this flavor before, get over to Mountain Brook Creamery and order a scoop. I have to order two scoops because my kids always want to eat my ice cream!

Sidewalk Loop My favorite place to take a stroll is the Mountain Brook Presbyterian loop off of Brookwood Road, South Brookwood Road and Westbury Road. Be sure to check out one of the most peaceful spots in the city across the trail from the back of the scout hut (pictured).
