A ON THE COVER

Danielle Ray and Hunter Whitlock married more than a decade after he first asked her out in the Shelby County High School field house parking lot.

A dear friend I’ve known since elementary school married the love of her life several months ago, and I had the privilege of celebrating with her. As the sun began its slow descent on a cool afternoon in late October, my friend and her fiancé stood beneath a tree in the backyard of the house they bought and renovated in our hometown and said their vows to each other. Dinner and dancing and catching up with old friends followed the ceremony, and as the stars flickered in the darkened sky several hours later, we lined their driveway and held our sparklers high, cheering them all the way to their getaway car. My heart was brimming with joy to be present for such a momentous day in their love story. This and two other friends’ weddings I attended in 2018 primed me for working on our annual wedding issue, an issue that’s equal parts beauty and heart. You’re about to see for yourself why we look forward to it every year. One of our favorite parts of the work that’s not really work is reading couples’ wedding announcements. It’s hard not to love a good how-we-met story. It’s even harder not to get sentimental reading a sweet proposal story. I’m constantly amazed at how creative people are in planning proposals that are poetic and poignant. These sweet stories are the intangible things couples can carry with them forever. And where the words end, the photos begin. You are about to see some gorgeous wedding photos. These exquisite images from couples’ big days will let you see the unforgettable moments that marked their celebrations. Just before the wedding announcements you’ll find hostess gift ideas from local shops, a guide to building your dream dress, wedding details that are trending and a flower guide detailing what’s in season when. If you have any feedback or ideas for future issues, you know where to find me. I wish you a happy and healthy new year!

THE SIMPLE LIFE

The Year of More Two things go hand in hand: a new calendar year and the list of promises, resolutions and commitments we make in order to make THIS year the best ever. Intentions are good, ideas are plentiful and testimonies are showing up everywhere we turn. In your mind, the “how” makes sense. Set your alarm for 4:30 a.m., go to the gym until 6 a.m., shower, shampoo and shave, family breakfast, and everyone’s out the door before the clock strikes 7:57 a.m. By mid-month, you hit snooze four times, breakfast is a cold PopTart and you’re texting forgiveness for running a tad late due to traffic. What more could you do so that this pattern isn’t repeated? You might be thinking you need less on your plate, less stress, less stuff—but what if it was just the opposite? What do you need more of Owner of SimpleWorks, so that you can have more joy, more Simpleworks.guru control and more time? lisa@simpleworks.guru uSleep. Seven hours of sleep is 205.981.7733 recommended. One of the best ways to make sure this happens is to set a bedtime . Avoid the temptation to stay up to squeeze in more work, TV or scrolling Instagram. uSmarter food choices. So many diets and fads from low carbs, high protein, no sugar, no white, no dairy, no gluten, high fat, points, calories … what do you eat? While deciding what’s right for your body, one thing is universal for all of us: Don’t eat for the moment, eat for the effect it will have later. And drink water. uExercise. You may think you’re too tired to go to the gym, yet you’ve experienced the “high” you get when you do go. Exercising doesn’t drain your energy, it replenishes it. Plus, it helps you get a better night’s sleep. uPeople. “You become like the five people you hang around with most.” Who’s talking in your ear? If they drain the life out of you and you can’t break off the relationship, then seek out more people to counter the negativity. Seek more mentors, motivational posts, books or podcasts. uEnergy. Emotions follow your lead. When you walk faster with your shoulders back, make eye contact and smile, you feel more energy than when you walk slowly looking down at the ground. Sit on the edge of your seat during meetings versus sitting back in the chair. This one simple change will give you more energy for listening and absorbing information. It’s natural to think about what we need less of—less stress, less stuff, less weight. What if you changed one word and focused on more? It’s that simple.

Birmingham musician Taylor Hicks was the main act for a fundraiser for King’s Home on Oct. 23 at The King’s Stables and Gardens in Wilsonville. Local artist Brendan Young opened for Hicks. “We were happy to transform our flower field into a nice venue with white tablecloths and hanging lights and some rustic hay bales,” King’s Home President Lew Burdette says. “Taylor said it had been a long time since he’d sung from a flat-bed truck, but he did a great job for us.” The Wilsonville campus is a boys’ facility, and the seven boys’ homes were invited to the concert. King’s Home is based in Chelsea, but has 22 residential homes encompassing Shelby, Jefferson, Tuscaloosa and Blount counties.

Fishing for a Win Remember when you were a kid and played the card game “Go Fish?” Well, the University of Montevallo’s Clent Davis did “go fish,” and it paid off—to the tune of $300,000 for winning the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup, kind of the Lombardi Trophy of bass fishing. Davis also helped to found the college’s fishing team, which was the springboard for the nation’s only President’s Outdoor Scholars Program.

Pink Brigade of Support Steve Pegues with the Pink Heals Birmingham chapter didn’t hesitate when asked about the impact the organization’s pink fire trucks have when they make surprise visits to women battling cancer. “We don’t just pull up unannounced. We come in with lights and sirens going so they know we’re there to support them,” Pegues says. “When we make home visits, a lot of times it’s a single mom or someone living by themselves, and they don’t have that support network. We want to show them we are behind them all the way.” Two of the organization’s pink trucks, Diane and Becky, made a stop at Alabaster’s Shelby Baptist Medical Center on Oct. 24 to allow hospital staff and visitors to sign the trucks in memory or honor of a loved one who faced or is facing a battle with cancer.

Honoring Veterans Members of American Legion Matthew Blount Post 555 gathered on Nov. 1 at the Pelham Civic Complex to ring in the upcoming holiday early with its annual Thanksgiving Dinner, which also served as an opportunity for the post to raise money for Wreaths Across America, a national program with the mission of placing a wreath on the grave of a veteran in the nation during the month of December. The organization’s mission to remember, honor and teach lasts all year long, far beyond the single day in December when wreath-laying ceremonies take place.

THE GUIDE EDUCATION

Perfect Score There’s no need for Taylor York to take the ACT again. The Briarwood Christian High School senior has scored a perfect composite score of 36. She is the daughter of Mike and Robin York. She represents about one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT and earn a top score. The composite score is the average of a student’s scores on the ACT’s four tests: English, mathematics, reading and science.

EDUCATION

Becoming a Bicentennial School Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced Aug. 3 that Chelsea Park Elementary School has been selected as an official Alabama Bicentennial School in a ceremony in the Old House Chamber of the State Capitol. Chelsea Park is one of 200 schools selected to receive this special designation and receive a grant to fund a community project developed by the school. Launched by Ivey in December 2017, the Alabama Bicentennial Schools Initiative encourages all public, private and homeschool students and teachers to participate in the celebration of Alabama’s 200th anniversary of statehood in 2019.

A FAMILIAR FACE

If you recognize a tall guy with blonde hair working in a local supermarket, it’s probably actor John Anderson. BY BILL PLOTT PHOTOS BY JEREMY RAINES ShelbyLiving.com

Thompson High School graduate John Anderson has acted in Stranger Things and other shows and films.

The double-takes are not uncommon. You walk into the produce department at a local supermarket and are startled by the tall blonde man with the receding hairline. Who is he? Where do I know him from? Maybe later it connects. He was one of the guys menacing the teenagers on Stranger Things. Or a scientist in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Or the “Stamp Guy” in Manhunt: Unabomber. All of the above. He’s John Anderson, actor. He has more than 20 credits on his IMDb (Internet Movie Database) listing. Some of his other roles have been in Black Panther, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, The Leisure Seeker and Ozark, the TV series. And yes, he does work in a supermarket’s

produce department—with a very accommodating management. “They all know what I’m doing. They think it’s kind of cute,” he says. Some who have picked up on his identity come in and ask if he’s working that day or when he will be working again. The managers tend to be discreet and perhaps a bit protective. After all, he has a job to do in the store. “I come in, and they’ll say, ‘John, your fan base was in here looking for you today.’” A graduate of Thompson High School, Anderson at age 41 is a latecomer to a film career. What opened the door for him was his biggest role to date – one of the 10 Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy II. “I was on Facebook at 2 a.m. one night. I saw this notice that they were seeking tall, skinny,

ugly guys with crooked teeth, who were not claustrophobic and not allergic to latex. I said, ‘That’s me! I’m tall and skinny and ugly and have crooked teeth.’” He sent off a resume, but didn’t hear anything. About a month later, he got a call from a casting director, asking him to come to the Atlanta Convention Center. “I didn’t want to be late, so I got up about 4 in the morning and drove over. When I got to the Center there were about 25 of us there. By 10 a.m. there were 4,500 people for essentially 12 parts,” he said, adding that the skinny ones had a better shot at making the cut. “They don’t want big muscle guys because in the costume they can look cartoonish. They can layer up a skinny guy,” he says. A month later, in December 2015, still not knowing what the film would be, he was among about 200 men called back for a one-week acting school. From that group would come 10 speaking parts and 10 core background parts as Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy II. He may not have had lines, but he had to be made up to look fierce, and the makeup application took time. “In the beginning (it took) around four hours, but by the end of the shoot just under three. change to remove it each day,” he says. That gig opened the door for numerous small roles in other movies and television shows. It’s a competitive field, and he learned one thing right away. “The lady who hired me said, ‘Keep going. Don’t take anything personally. You’ve got to have that look they are looking for at that moment. Doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you,’” he recalls. A military brat, Anderson moved around quite a bit. Then, his dad, who was working for IBM, go transferred to Alabama. Anderson spent his senior year at Thompson High School. Did his 6-8 physique make him a natural athlete? “No. I never played basketball in my life. Colleges were hounding me. I said, ‘I don’t know how to play basketball.’ They said, ‘We’ll teach you.’ But I was very introverted and antisocial.” He could not totally escape from sports, though. “The jocks and other kids gathered around me, the new kid. They said, ‘Who are you, Alabama or Auburn?” I didn’t know what they were talking about. They said you had to be Alabama or Auburn, so I picked the red team,” he says. He did become an Alabama football fan. He watches Crimson Tide football with friends on Saturday. Otherwise, it’s movies and Star Trek.

“I watch Star Trek every day. I know all of the lines. I like the Next Generation better than the original,” he says. Anderson says he grew up as a total fanboy, loving the movies and all things Spiderman. When he was about 4 he and his brother had their picture taken with a guy in Spiderman costume. His biggest thrill so far is being in Spiderman: The Homecoming. There I was on the set with (actor) Tom Holland. I was having a conversation with Spiderman!” he says. When he told his mother she said, “Who would have seen this coming 35 years ago?” “I love the movies,” Anderson says. “I’m always throwing out lines to see who catches the references. My favorite movie is Blues Brothers. I would love to play Elwood. There is more music in that movie than there is in a lot of musicals.” Although GOTG II was his big break, Anderson started out cosplay (costume role playing). He did birthday parties and other events dressed up as characters such as Batman and the Joker. He promotes his career by appearing at two or three science fiction or comic cons every month. Selling autographed photos helps pay the bills and meeting fans adds to name recognition. “What’s important today is not where did you

go to school? It’s how many social media followers do you have?” he says. Anderson’s career got a potentially huge boost recently when he received his Screen Actors Guild card. That offers opportunities for a lot more auditions, particularly speaking roles. “I can become a speaking Ravager. This is like the second phase of my career,” he says.

It’s a great place to live. Whatever your species may be.

The renowned biologist E.O. Wilson has called it “an aquatic treasure house.” The World Wildlife Fund and Nature Conservancy included it as one of just eight “Hotspots of Diversity” in the entire world.

But, to us, it’s an unparalleled place to reconnect with nature by canoeing, kayaking, hiking, birding, botanizing, or merely floating in its waters.

In the clean water we return to the river, and through our efforts with Adopt-A-Stream, It’s the Cahaba—the longest free-flowing river SouthWest Water Company is doing our part to in Alabama, with more fish species per kilometer ensure the Cahaba is there for future generations than any other river in North America, including to enjoy—whatever their species may be. I like to say that I was thrilled to see that God was turning the struggle of my childhood into the strength of my adulthood. Who do you look up to as a role model? My mom is my role model. She taught me the power of prayer. My story is about having personally experienced the results of the power of prayer. I was miraculously healed and protected as a child from what could have been a life-and-death situation. But God used that experience to give me a platform to share the good news with the world. Prayer is more than just asking God to intervene in a difficult situation. It’s a way to demonstrate a complete dependence on and trust in Him and His goodness.

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

UNCONVENTIONAL ART

Folk artists’ works are on display at the Arts Council in January. BY LINDSAY DYESS PHOTO CONTRIBUTED Folk art is steeped in southern tradition, so what better way to celebrate the genre than to display the works of some of its best regional artists? The Shelby County Arts Council is primed for visitors to see its annual folk art exhibit. For the past few years, Fine Folk Art exhibit curator Teresa Wamble has handpicked some of the best regional folk artists to participate this year. Fine Folk Art—an intentional play on words— simply means we believe we have some of the finest folk artists around. Artists showing in the 2018 Fine Folk Art exhibit include Mary Ann Casey, Brian Bohanan, Deron Harris, Scott McQueen, Carter Sanders, Ben Smith and Teresa Wamble. Each artist brings his or her own folk art twist to the exhibit. Their work ranges from gourd art to painting on unconventional surfaces to ceramic work and 3D work with found materials. The exhibit opening will be held Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Arts Council. Exhibiting artist and Jemison native Ben Smith spent his life as a carpenter until a fall from a deer stand left him paralyzed in 1996. Since then, he decided

to put his wood working skills to use in another way. Smith uses his know-how to turn wood in to functional art by crafting bows, vases, chessboards, bowls and much more. Smith and his family spend time selling his work at various art shows around the state, and his pieces have even won awards. The Celebration of the Arts Luncheon fundraiser is back on Feb. 23. Funds raised from the luncheon ensure that the Shelby County Arts Council outreach

How You Met/Proposal: Trev and I (Anna) met while working at Jim ‘N Nick’s. One day out of the blue my cute supervisor asked me out! On our very first date, we went to see the movie of the year The Secret Life of Pets at The Summit in Birmingham. I was so nervous! After the movie, we walked around at The Summit, talking and getting to know each other while losing track of time. The Proposal: One dog and two cats later, we found ourselves back at The

Summit to see a movie. Similar to our first date, we walked around at The Summit afterward. Trev mentioned he was hungry and he wanted a piece of cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory. We do this every now and then, so I didn’t think too much of it. So, we go to The Cheesecake Factory and walk over to a small lookout spot to see the city. We sit down on a bench and he tells me to open the cheesecake. I started crying as soon as I saw it. It said “Will you marry me?” on a piece of white chocolate. I would have said yes to Trev

WEDDINGS a long time ago, so I didn’t even let him finish talking before I agreed to marry him! Favorite Moment from the Big Day: Our favorite moment from our big day was walking out of the ceremony together. Getting to see all our family and friends together in one spot in support of us on our big day was really special for Trev and me. We were both so blissful and excited to start out loves together.

Favorite Wedding Details: One of my favorite things about my wedding day was the flowers. Everything was absolutely perfect, from the arrangements to my bouquet to the beautifully decorated arbor we stood in front of to say our vows. Cake Art provides sweet treats for all occassions By Emily Reed

When it comes to cakes, Cynthia Bertolone knows how to craft Italian treats and cuisine for all occasions. “Our cakes are famous for their perfect flavors, and beautiful presentation, especially a masterpiece of wedding cake designs and custom groom cakes,” said Cynthia, owner of Cake Art in Pelham. “We proudly go beyond desserts to create lunchtime Michael & Cynthia meals, dinners-to-go, and catering menus that please crowds and Bertolone, Owners showcase our work as authentic Italian cooks.” The bakery/bistro is located off of Pelham Parkway and offers a variety of cakes, including those for brides and grooms such as 2-tier “lightly speckled icing or naked cakes,” to a 5-tier cream cheese icing with fresh fruits detailed in laced and ornate designs. “The groom cakes are a gift from the bride that reflects his [the groom] personality and interests like a hunting tree trunk, or a barrel in his favorite cake flavors such as our tri-chocolate cake that is made with chocolate cake, chocolate icing whipped with Nutella, mini chocolate chips and chocolate ganache.” Trends in wedding cakes often range, and Cynthia said anything is possible. Oftentimes, brides will take inspiration for a cake based off of their wedding decor, decorations, the venue, wedding gowns, and dressed to create a cake design, according to Bertolone. “Fresh flowers on wedding cakes are the most popular, but geometric designs, ruffles, and earthly/rustic looks such as a naked cake can be the ‘wow’ factor for a wedding,” Cynthia said. For those looking to finalize plans on their wedding cakes, Bertolone suggests scheduling a cake tasting and consultation as early as possible to ensure no scheduling conflicts. In 2019, Bertolone will expand her business to Montevallo with the opening of two locations. One location will be a coffee house named C’s Cakes and Coffee House, where lattes, cappuccinos, soups, sandwiches, salads and more will be served with private rooms/rentals for office meetings or rehearsal breakfasts and lunch for weddings. The second location will be an Italian restaurant and bar where Cynthia’s husband, Michael Bertolone, will be creating Italian cuisine. Cynthia said wedding parties can schedule their dinner rehearsals at the restaurant, and cake tastings and consultations can be performed at C’s Cakes and Coffee House in addition to Cake Art in Pelham. How You Met: He (William) says it was love at first sight. I (Hayley) couldn’t remember his name. But he quickly turned my world upside down. Our first date was a St. Paul & the Broken Bones concert at the Alabama Theatre. How could I not fall for him? The Proposal: He took me on a scenic scavenger hunt of Birmingham with video clues to lead me to each stop, including: Samford University (where he cheered for me as I was crowned Miss Alabama 2016), Sloss Furnaces (where

we have enjoyed live music together), Boutwell Auditorium (the starting line of the half marathon we ran together), the Alabama Theatre (first date), and then he proposed at the Vulcan where we could see it all. I still have no idea what he said as he knelt because I was so emotional, but I said yes! How You Met: Austin and I (PJ) grew up 16 miles apart from each other, but it took going to the same college for us to finally meet each other. We often discuss our past and then realize that we were both in the same place at the same time, but never noticed each other. Austin and I both cheered at UAB, however different years. This led us to have several mutual friends and eventually spending some time together. It was perfect timing, and I thank God every day he sent me Austin exactly when he did.

Favorite Moment from the Big Day: There is nothing more magical than hundreds of sparklers and all your favorite people screaming their best wishes. We got into the car, drove away and for the first time the entire day, it was just us with nothing but the sound of wind and other cars as we rode in the backseat of our 1929 Model A Ford convertible. This is when we started soaking in the events of the day. We drove through downtown Birmingham, the city where we met, and it looked different somehow.

WEDDINGS

Favorite Wedding Details: Austin and I are the perfect mix of traditional and contemporary. We wanted to use the traditional vows like our parents and grandparents, but also wanted to make it personal. We wrote our own vows to read before the scripted vows. For the aisle during our ceremony, Austin and I made six wooden signs that had 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 written on them. Austin cut and stained the wood, and I wrote the words. Two of the signs now hang in our living room.

How You Met: We initially met through a mutual friend in middle school at a church youth group. We occasionally saw each other in high school and college (we are a house divided; I (Emily) went to Auburn and Bruce, Alabama). After both of us had moved back to Birmingham several years after graduating college, the same mutual friend reintroduced us at a Dungeons and Dragons party. Bruce invited me to dinner to catch up, and we started dating soon after. The Wedding Dress: My mom

suggested we go to Heidi Elnora since she has the Build-a-Bride collection. Since they have basic dress shapes, we were able to really see what silhouette looked best and began pulling dresses. As I walked out of the fitting room, all of us knew it was the one. It had the right amount of lace detail, yet didn’t overpower my frame. The one drawback was it was sleeveless. Elizabeth Singleton, my amazing consultant, suggested adding the illusion sleeves and continuing the Venetian fern detail. The ferns were a subtle theme throughout the wedding and were

WEDDINGS included in the bouquets. Favorite Wedding Details: The floral theme was romantic and feminine as if they were cut from the garden. Carol from Lillie Jane worked her magic and selected the dahlias and garden roses. The ferns were taken from the dress. The thistle were added to surprise Bruce as McLeod is Scottish. Bruce’s favorite detail was our first dance, which was choreographed to a mashup of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Twenty-One Pilots and “Sway with Me” by Michael Bublé created by our friend, Mr. Kennedy.

On Oct. 28, Alec took me to the pumpkin patch. When we got to Old Baker Farm, we walked past where the other people were walking to the pumpkins, and I started questioning him. He walked me

to a beautiful table he had set up in front of a cotton field. The actual moment was a blur. Afterward, we went back to his house, where a party of our friends and family were waiting. The Wedding Dress: I was all for a simple and plain dress. My mom and I went to three different shops searching for simple, but it wasn’t until we went to Village Bridal of Homewood that I found it! Anna at Village Bridal pulled so many beautiful gowns, and when they didn’t give me that “feeling,” she decided to go

out on a leap of faith and pull this gorgeous, full-skirted princess gown. The second I saw it I knew it was the dress. I described it to my friends as a “princess running through the woods.” Favorite Moment from the Big Day: My (Alec) favorite part of the day was Sabrina walking down the aisle. Just as she started to walk down at the top of the hill, the sun was starting to set behind her and just behind the trees, which set a glowing tone behind her. She looked like an angel and it was the most beautiful sight in the world.

The Wedding Dress: I (Evan) still swoon over my wedding dress. Kelly at the Carriage House in Homewood was such a joy to work with. I told Kelly I didn’t want any lace (I mean I was seriously anti lace), but little did I know she had pulled a beautiful Sareh Nouri dress for me to try on at the end of the appointment. I was hesitant to put it on, but when I did, my heart started to race and I looked at myself in the mirror and blurted out, “I look good!” She put a beautiful cathedral length veil on me and added a gorgeous opal and Swarovski crystal belt to

complete the look. The lace for this dress was made by the same lace maker that made the lace for Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. I was basically wearing royal lace! Favorite moment from the big day: Garrett’s reaction to his wedding gift was the best thing I have ever witnessed. Garrett and I met at Auburn University, and immediately bonded over our love for football. Garrett loves anything Auburn football-related, especially alum Bo Jackson. For a wedding gift, I got him a

signed, framed memorabilia jersey from Bo Jackson. He took no time to hang it up front and center in his “man cave” in our new home. My second favorite part was walking down the aisle to see my groom. It was the first time all day I thought I might lose my cool and the tears would start flowing. Garrett was at the end of the aisle in tears. What you are doing now: Garrett and I live in Auburn with our English Springer Spaniel pup, Peggy. We recently bought our first home together and cannot wait to fill it with lots of memories and a big family.

How you met: J.R. and I (Kayle) met through mutual friends at a football party. The first thing I noticed about J.R. was his ability to brighten up a room with his contagious laugh and smile. We eventually became friends, but only talked every now and then because I was living in Troy. One summer, while I was home for summer break, J.R. finally asked me out on a date.

the proposal, we all got up that morning and headed straight to the beach. My mom told me we were taking “family beach pictures” that afternoon. J.R. told me his mom had driven down to the beach to take some pictures for a friend, and wanted to stop by and see us. She offered to take our family pictures while she already had her camera out. His mom really did take pictures of my family, but The Proposal: Every year, my family then she offered to take some of J.R. and takes a beach trip together. I asked J.R. to me. We were posing for a hugging picture go on this particular trip with us, not when J.R. looked me in the eyes and I knowing what was in store. On the day of said, “I love you.” Next thing I knew, he

WEDDINGS was on his knee and my family had lined up behind him, each holding a sign with a word on it. The signs that my dad, mom, sister and brother were holding spelled out, “Will you marry me?” Favorite moment from the big day: I made some great memories with my bridesmaids as we got ready together, I had my mom and sister with me to help me put my dress and veil on perfectly, I shared the sweetest first look with my dad, I took pictures with family members and shared vows with the love of my life.

How You Met: Hunter had been to football practice and I (Danielle) had been to cheerleading practice. A group of us were sitting on the back of his Bronco in the Shelby County High School field house parking lot waiting on the Thursday night team meal. Hunter and I were the only two left on the back of his Bronco before dinner. He looked at me and said the most adorably, terrible pick up line EVER. I remember being a flattered but thinking to myself “Wow, that was weird.” The next week he asked one of my friends for my number and called me. A few weeks later

he invited me to a little “party.” After that we became an item and dated my junior and his senior year! Yes, we even went to prom together! The Proposal: I planned a surprise 30th birthday party for Hunter and had his college friends fly in to celebrate. We went on a Birmingham Brewery Tour and then ended the day with dinner at The Club. Hunter decided it was the perfect time to propose and truly surprise me with all of his favorite people in town. Before he blew out the candles on

the Bronco replica cake I made him, he stood and gave a beautiful speech and said he didn’t remember a single birthday wish he had ever made before, but wanted me to make his 30th birthday wish come true by being his wife. When I said yes, he blew out the candles. Favorite Moments from the Big Day: We decided to write our own vows. Hunter had his Bronco restored for the wedding. Existing Business Program Helping Fuel Growth

When most think of economic development, it is the recruitment of new companies that comes to mind. However it is the less visible expansion of existing businesses that mostly fuels job growth and investment in our county, region, and state. The Chamber and 58 Inc have partnered over the last year to serve theses existing firms through our collaborative Business Contact Program. Over the past 12 months, staff from the partner organizations

visited over 100 companies in Shelby County. These companies are large and small and represent the diverse industry base of our local economy. During the visits, company representatives discuss obstacles to their growth, workforce needs, supplier information, and opportunities for future growth with the Chamber/58 Inc staff. Given the record low unemployment rate, a majority of the conversations have been

National Day of Prayer Breakfast

TS TICKEPER $40 SON PER

Thursday, May 2, 8-10 a.m. Tickets go on sale Thursday, January 3 To reserve a ticket, please call (205) 665-3535 x 1031.

Honesty is the word that many have used to describe Ruth Graham as she brings a new and Biblical perspective to her journey of faith. Ruth shares her journey of faith through trials common to all, her own divorce, her teenage daughter's two pregnancies, and going back to school at 40. She is articulate and candid as she speaks of these intensely personal matters. Ruth is the author of four books, including First Steps in the Bible, a children's Bible storybook, In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart, and Legacy of Love...î Žings I Learned from My Mother. Ruth is the third child of Ruth and Billy Graham. The National Day of Prayer Breakfast is sponsored by the Lucille Ryals Thompson Colonial Chapel Foundation and cosponsored by the American Village Citizenship Trust.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY Chattahoochee Valley; I was in the City of Harpersville Veterans Day parade; and I participated in the Princess Party for the local Girl Scout troops in Auburn. I was also in many more parades for the holidays and performed for the veterans in Tuscaloosa in December. I will do many things with my personal platform Girls Inc. throughout the year and anything that can help Shelby County. What advice would you give other young women interested in participating in the pageant? I would tell them to be confident in who they are. To be themselves and to work hard and prepare and it will get your far. I would also tell them what an incredible director Pam Oliver. She will set you up for success in every way possible.
