Nothing takes away the joy of a new home faster than a broken sewer pump. But, if Jody Potts has anything to do with it, you can keep that new home smile on your face. Because every single time Jody and his team of SouthWest Water Company service technicians install a pump at a newly constructed home, they follow a fourteen-point checklist, to ensure everything is just so.

“We always want to meet the customer’s need with the least amount of out-of-pocket expense for them,” Jody says. His most satisfying days? When he and his crew diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair the problem in one visit.

As a Senior Service Technician, Jody is responsible for maintaining 1,500 pump stations that keep the system running smoothly. And for fixing problems that arise for existing customers, too.

“That means the customer is going to benefit right away,” Jody says. “And we take extra steps to try to make sure we don’t have to come back a second time.”

For starters, he will never try to sell you an expensive pump, if all you need is a $35 check valve.

Jody Potts and SouthWest Water Company are committed to getting it right the first time. And that’s always cause for joy.

T ON THE COVER

The sage advice many of us brides-to-be receive is to soak up as many sweet moments as we can on our wedding day. To fully enjoy the finale of all our meticulous planning and arranging and fretting, no matter what snafus might surface, because it’s our day. After mine and Joe’s year-long engagement, I was more than ready five years ago to put this advice into practice and just celebrate our new life together with our family and friends. And I did. I relished every part of our big day, occasionally pausing to think how surreal it was to be the reason for so many people we love to have gathered in one place. I only wish it could have lasted longer, but that’s where our photos come in handy. Every photo I look at in our album takes me back to a sweet moment from those wonderful 12 hours. I’m sure many of you would agree the day seems to pass quickly, and that’s one reason I love working on our annual wedding issue. It gives couples another chance to reflect on their big days. One of our favorite parts of the work that’s not really work is reading couples’ back stories – the sometimes unexpected meetings that led to unforgettable first dates, and the proposals that didn’t go according to the original plan but ended up all the more special because of it. Where the words end, the photos begin. You are about to see yet another collection of lovely wedding photos (shout-out to all the talented photographers!). These exquisite images from couples’ big days highlight their love stories in a vibrant way. And just before the real weddings, you’ll find a color guide by season, a wedding timeline for engagements, cake samples from local bakeries and a gift guide full of ideas for your bridesmaids and groomsmen. And be sure to check out the features about True Vine Gifts artist Sasha Johns and Calera’s new coffee shop, Adventurer’s Coffee Co. If you have any story ideas for our upcoming issues, you know where to find me. Here’s to a happy and productive new year!

As we start a new decade, it’s easy to reflect on how far we’ve come in 10 years. Toy Story 3 was No. 1 at the box office; the iPad and other tablets were being introduced; Facebook hit 500 million accounts; and fears of online privacy made headlines. Has it really been 10 years if these things still dominate our newsfeed? We’re constantly looking for new ways to keep our lives streamlined. Yet the answer is the same now as it was in 2010—how does your brain work? How does your brain best process, remember and track information? Here are tips when choosing from the multitude of of planners, calendars and apps available. uDecide start/end dates. Paper calendars are printed to run the school year, quarterly or a calendar year. Owner of SimpleWorks, Simpleworks.guru Moms may prefer an August to July lisa@simpleworks.guru planner, while professionals may find 205.981.7733 the traditional January to December format suits their projects. Decide which one best fits your lifestyle. uElectronic, paper or smartphone. Google Calendar works well when your schedule of appointments needs to be shared with coworkers or family members. Paper is still the most popular, and comes in a variety of sizes from wall to small pocket format. This works best when your activities and meetings don’t need to be shared since a paper planner tends to be more personal. uCustomize. Paper systems offer many options to customize your day and week, such as lists, to-do sections, brain dumps, goal setting, food tracking and even a fitness section. Cal Calendar and Jorte apps allow you to synchronize calendars, schedules and task lists on multiple devices. Both paper and app-based versions are designed to be visual with your choice of stickers, colors and fonts. uUpdate with ease. Regardless of format, a calendar needs to be updated regularly. Be aware of how easy it is to alter an appointment. Birthdays don’t change, but dentist appointments do. uMonth-at-a-glance. Seeing a whole month at once allows for better time management. When you see the “heavy” spots in your month, you’re able to rearrange, cancel or say no to further commitments that may lead to stress and overwhelm. Ask yourself, “What fits my needs and method of reminders?” versus “What is everyone else using?” This is an individual choice that fits your unique method of capturing dates, details and data for your lifestyle. When you find the right system for you, stick with it so that in 2030 we won’t be having this same conversation! It’s that simple.

The clock reads 12:30 p.m. as Sasha Johns stands up from her kitchen table to make coffee on a Friday afternoon. She rose early to drive the students on her Shelby County bus route to school, and in another hour, she’ll need to sweep out her bus before starting the afternoon rounds. The coffee will help to keep her productive during the hours in between—the hours that find Sasha seated at an old wooden writing desk in her craft room, a mishmash of wine corks and wires and bits and baubles spread out before her, waiting to be turned into ornaments and wreaths and floor mats like the one under her feet as she boils water for her coffee at the stove. Sasha, also affectionately known as the “wine cork lady” among some of her acquaintances, can take what a wine connoisseur might say is just a stopper for a bottle of her favorite vintage and give

it new purpose in a piece of jewelry, a seasonal decoration or even, yes, a kitchen mat. And she makes and sells wine jelly, which is exactly what it sounds like: jelly made with different types of wine. The question she hears most often is not “how do you make these things?” but “how did you find yourself making these things?” Her story, like that vintage from the cellar, is years in the making. As an artist’s daughter, Sasha was exposed to art at a young age and developed an affinity for it. “I’ve been raised in it all my life,” she says. “It’s my creative outlet.” When she received a bad grade on an activity in kindergarten because her coloring strayed outside the confines of the drawing, her mother came to her defense, telling her—and her teacher—that Sasha should be allowed to be as creative as she wanted to be in her art. “It is a thing

Art was always in Sasha’s life, but it didn’t move to the forefront until she was an adult, navigating wifehood, motherhood and living in a new city, Atlanta. It was there that she made her first wine cork wreath for a silent auction for charity. She thought it was “cute and cool,” but she wasn’t sure how it would be received. She quickly found out when she started receiving requests from people for the wreaths. And then, she started getting requests from people for other items they wanted her to make out of wine corks. She accepted each new request as a fun challenge to feed her creativity. Also in Atlanta, Sasha followed her gardener’s green thumb to a group of women called the Chattahoochee Unit of the Herb Society of America who met at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. “I was just interested in growing mint and stuff,” she says. “I went to it in my free time.” The women immediately welcomed Sasha—the youngest of the group by about 20 years—into their fold, and she blossomed in the warmth of their friendship. There’s nothing like a good cup of coffee. This was the conclusion that Taylor Neal, Andrew Wages and Kenny Spradlin came to after drinking a “pretty terrible cup of coffee” together. Thus, the decision to try to make their own from scratch was born. They purchased a bag of green coffee beans online along with an air popcorn popper and roasted their first batch of beans. “Roasting coffee beans is what really sets coffee apart from the runof-the-mill stuff. We went through around 100 different beans before we settled on what we use now,” Neal says.

batch has a different time and temperature. Each different setting brings out a different flavor,” he explains. “For instance, our dark roast is a Columbian bean, roasted at our highest temperature, for the longest time, for as long as we can without burning the bean.” After progressively improving their processes and equipment, the trio of friends decided to share their success and began selling their various roasts online. The online store at adventurerscoffee.co features their beans, which can be purchased in whole bean or ground form, for delivery anywhere in the world.

GEARING UP FOR ADVENTURE VENTURING BEYOND KNOWN BORDERS The roasting process begins with the purchase of washed coffee beans from their quality importer, Café Imports. When they arrive, the beans are separated out pound by pound and roasted. “Each 26 January/February 2020

The idea of opening a local shop began percolating about a year ago. “A café came as a second thought,” Neal says. “But we figured, why not do it all in one?”

Taylor Neal, Andrew Wages and Kenny Spradlin chose maps from Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and World of Warcraft to be painted on the walls of their coffee shop, Adventurer’s Coffee Co., as a nod to fantasy genres.

The three co-owners decided on the name Adventurer’s Coffee Co. for their 2,500-square-foot physical café storefront, now open in historic downtown Calera. “The name came from the concept that—in our mind, at least—everyone yearns for adventure. For us, that’s all sort of shaped by our collective pasts. We’re nerdy guys and outdoorsy guys. We grew up playing Dungeons and Dragons, and Warcraft and reading authors like Tolkien. We’re also the kinds of guys that love to go hike, pitch a tent and settle around a campfire.” The names assigned to the various coffee beans used serve to inspire coffee shop patrons to embark on their own caffeinated adventures as they face their individual days: Dungeons and Dark Roasts, Faire Maiden and Bean to the Future, to name a few of the creatively named roasts. ESTABLISHING A BASE CAMP The developing atmosphere of the café is being designed to reflect an adventurer’s spirit. “We’re doing something that—at least we haven’t seen it—hasn’t been done before. We wanted to hearken back to elements of the fantasy genres, so we put fantasy aesthetics in place. When you come in, there are maps painted on the walls taken from things like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and World of Warcraft,” Neal says. And the café’s location in Calera seemed to be a no-brainer for the coffee shop founders. “Calera has such a rich and diverse history, which is why we looked into the downtown area and decided to settle here. How You Met: He (Coleman) is my (Bryanna’s) high school sweetheart. We started dating when I was 17. We stayed together throughout college as well. The Proposal: He told me that his friend wanted to make a video for his videography classes. I thought that was weird but did not think anything of it. He let his friend take charge, which was good because it made the videography story more believable. We went to the river in town and there was a chapel. I remember thinking that we should

probably leave because the whole place was decorated with flowers going down the aisle. I thought there was a wedding about to happen because it was a Sunday. His friend then asked us to walk down the aisle together for the video. This shows how gullible I really am because I had no idea until he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was a dream! Favorite Moment: Before the ceremony, Coleman and I and the entire wedding party went to the house and

WEDDINGS just hung out an hour before the ceremony. All the pictures were done, and the busyness of the day had died down. We just relaxed. It was my family and his and all the groomsmen and bridesmaids. We all prayed together before walking down the aisle, and it was the most amazing thing.

How You Met: Hunter played sports against my (Haley’s) brother growing up, so we always seemed to end up in the same places. We took notice of each other in high school, but neither of us knew the other had a crush. We kept up through social media in college, but never acted on the high school crush. After college, we ran into each other and Hunter asked me to go to dinner. The rest was history; we were inseparable! The Proposal: Hunter and I share a love for the beach. Both of our families

have beach houses, and they are our favorite places to visit. We had a free weekend, so we decided to skip town and head to the beach. I thought it was just one of our usual quick weekend trips, but I was in for a surprise. He asked me if we could get dressed up and go down to the beach at sunset to take some pictures together. Once we got down there, he asked to go on a walk. He began talking about our future together and then dropped to one knee and popped the big question. It was perfect!

WEDDINGS

Favorite Moment: We both really enjoyed the special moment alone together after we said our vows in front of friends and family. It was special to be able to reflect on the day and that we had chosen to spend our lives together. What You Are Doing Now: I am working as a kidney transplant surgery nurse practitioner at UAB Hospital. Hunter is working as a cardiac intensive care unit nurse at UAB Hospital, and he is also an officer in the United States Army Nurse Corps. We live in Chelsea.

How You Met: Whitney and Benjamin knew each other from growing up in neighboring cities and attending Pelham High School, but they never met until years later, after they graduated from UAB and became members at Church of the Highlands. One Sunday following church, the two said hello. A few years later, Ben asked Whitney on a date. She agreed and they met at a local downtown restaurant, knowing instantly they were meant to be.

The Proposal: Local artists and musicians filled the streets of the River District in Savannah, Georgia, on a Friday evening in October 2019. Whitney and Benjamin headed down to the water to listen to a band and have dinner. As they walked along the water bank, a photographer was set up taking pictures. Whitney said, “Let’s ask her to take a picture of us.” A few moments later, the music stopped, and Benjamin got down on one knee and asked Whitney to marry him. Whitney didn’t know Benjamin had

WEDDINGS hired the photographer days before, setting this whole moment up and carrying the ring in his shoe the whole day! What You Are Doing Now: Benjamin and Whitney live in Atlanta, Georgia, where they have bought a new house and are actively involved in their new church and community. Benjamin is starting doctorate school, and Whitney works in alumni relations and admissions for a doctorate program. They are excited to be expecting a baby this year.

How You Met: We met in the sixth grade at Columbiana Middle School. We had band class together for two years and became really good friends, and then in the eighth grade, he (Kyle) finally asked me (Jordan) to be his girlfriend. We are really blessed to have found each other so young. We were able to share all of our homecomings, proms, softball and baseball games, college formals, and many milestones together. The Proposal: We made plans to go to the beach with two of our best friends in

the summer of 2018. Our friends had gotten engaged earlier that year, so I was told the plan was for me to take some engagement pictures for them. I was telling them how to pose when they asked me and Kyle to demonstrate for them while they held my camera. Once I handed my camera over, Kyle started saying the sweetest things and got down on one knee while our friends took pictures and recorded the whole thing. Looking back now, I can remember seeing how nervous Kyle was and how excited our friends were earlier that day, but I was totally oblivious.

WEDDINGS

Favorite Details: My brother playing the saxophone to our first dance. Our song was “Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis, and my brother memorized the whole song for us. We also honored Kyle’s late father during the ceremony and reception. He was not physically there, but he was definitely there in spirit. I had a piece of my mother’s dress wrapped around my bouquet too along with a handkerchief from my sorority with my badge and two of my sister’s badges pinned to it.

How You Met: We (Dasha and Ross) met in an English class when we were freshmen at Chelsea High School. We quickly became friends that year (2011) and then started dating sophomore year (2012). Our love story began when we were in high school, and our love and friendship has continued to grow over the last seven years together! The Proposal: We were supposed to be going on a date and because of “traffic” we had to re-route and go a different way. On the way there, he pulled into Veterans

Park and asked me to get out of the car and walk with him to a tree that we used to sit under during the springtime. This was a special spot for us because under that tree we talked about our future together. As we got to the tree, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him and I said yes. We celebrated with our families after! Wedding Dress: My wedding dress was my favorite detail of the wedding—I first saw it online at BHLDN and then went to Atlanta with my mom and grandmother to try it, and we all

WEDDINGS immediately loved it. It was simple, elegant and was exactly what I wanted. Favorite Moment: My favorite moment of the entire day was having all of our favorite people under the same roof. How You Met: Alfredo and I (Meradith) had been going to the same gym for years. I don’t initiate conversations with strangers easily, but Alfredo had long hair with a man bun at the time. So one day I walked up to him and asked him if he had a hair tie I could use. (Yes, that’s the best I could come up with.) After that, we didn’t talk for about six months. Then one day he saw me again at the gym and asked me out on a date. The Proposal: Alfredo planned a nice dinner for us at Fleming’s. I was somewhat

expecting a proposal at the restaurant because we had been ring shopping a few months prior. However, after a lovely evening out, we left to go home. My mother called me saying that my dad hurt his back, and she needed help getting in the car to take him to the doctor. When we got to my parents’ house, all the lights were off. There was a trail lit up with candles leading me to a spot where there were pictures of me and Alfredo. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. All of my loved ones came up from the basement to celebrate with us.

WEDDINGS

Favorite Moment: The majority of my family is Italian, so we had a big fat Italian wedding. There is a traditional Italian wedding dance that we do at all the weddings to a song called “Cela Luna/Lazy Mary.” The bride and groom are in the middle of the dance floor, the bridal party, parents, and siblings are circled around them, and the rest of the wedding guests are circled around everyone a larger circle. One circle goes clockwise while the other goes the opposite. I loved it because I finally got to be in the middle where all the fun is!

How You Met: At lunch, my (Shelby’s) friend ran into some people from her church. She told me I should go to the Young Professionals Group at Shades Mountain Baptist Church because “a cute guy joined recently” and we would “look really cute together.” I laughed it off, but eventually attended the group. The “cute guy,” Jim, was in the same class! Another member brought him over to meet me. Jim introduced himself and sat next to me during the class. The rest was history!

The Proposal: Jim and I had been talking about marriage for a few months. But the Saturday he proposed, Dec. 15, he was determined not to make plans with me and I was getting upset. On the one weekend we both had off, we weren’t going anywhere or doing anything fun. I had talked him into getting lunch, and on the way back, Jim said, “OK, I’ll pick you up in 30 minutes. We are going on a date.” Jim picked me up, and during the entire car ride I was trying to guess what we were doing. He kept quiet and all the backroads

He parked the car and was like, “Let’s go for a walk.” He turned towards me and said he had been waiting 27 years to find me. He then got choked up, paused for a second and told me he loved me. He then got on one knee. I was so happy!

How You Met: We met online, and our first date was in Homewood – dinner at Jinsei. After our first date, we saw each other every day and very shortly after, we decided to be in a relationship. I (Renata) had kids from a previous marriage, and they loved him. They would ask about him every day. The proposal: Four months later, I

had a work conference scheduled at the beach and he went with me. Before we hit I-65 South, he took me to Diamonds Direct, and the diamond specialist had choices of rings ready that Eric had previously chosen for me to pick from. Favorite Moment: Our wedding was super laid back. We did not do a formal

How You Met: Charlie and I (Olivia) were in the Chelsea High School Band together and started out as just friends. We started dating when I brought him a milkshake after he got his wisdom teeth out my senior year (2013). We dated through college at the University of Alabama and marched in the Million Dollar Band together. The Proposal: Charlie set it up in his apartment. He had a bunch of pictures of us around a new Bible (with my new name engraved on the front cover) opened to 1

Corinthians 13:4-8, the verses describing the characteristics of love. Favorite Moment: My favorite moment from the day was the surprise daddy/daughter dance my dad and I did. We wanted our dance to make us laugh instead of cry. So I asked my high school dance teacher from my dance studio, Karen Guarino, to choreograph a fun dance for us. It started out as a typical slow-dance to a sappy song, then the music skipped and we broke out into a dance. The final

WEDDINGS

surprise was when my two sisters joined us, and we ended the dance in a big family group hug. Favorite Details: Big Al’s appearance and the milkshake bar. We asked Big Al from UA to come for an hour at the reception because we were so involved with the football team in the band, and we love the school so much. He came and danced, did a congo line and took photos with everyone. And we had the idea to have a milkshake bar because we started dating over a milkshake.

“ ” THE QUESTION

What’s your favorite memory from your wedding? Getting all of my family and my wife’s family together in one spot. We are all pretty spread out, so it really meant a lot. Also, dedicating myself to the woman I love. There’s no one else I’d rather spend eternity with.

So many, but our precious two year old niece and nephew as flower girl and ring bearer! They were so sweet and did great! There was candy on the front pew waiting for them.

When it was over! I planned and bought everything myself. It was very stressful!

I have been married 40 years and my dad passed away when I was 16 and my older brother gave me away at my wedding.

Your Pharmacist Should Be Your Advocate in Medication Management

Most of us take one or more medications daily, and if you are living with a chronic condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes, the amount and complexity of medications prescribed can grow rapidly. Taking your medications as directed has numerous health and safety benefits. Over time, appropriate medication management can help to control chronic health conditions which can lead to an overall improvement in your health. This can be a challenge for anyone, especially if you are under the care of multiple physicians at the same time. The good news is that everyone has access to an expert in medication management – your local pharmacist. Pharmacists are medication experts and can track your medications while being mindful of potential drug interactions that could affect

your health. In addition, your pharmacist can serve as an advocate by working alongside the rest of your healthcare team in managing your medication therapy safely and appropriately. The local pharmacist is the most accessible healthcare provider for most people and the value of using a pharmacy that will provide the services and care that pharmacists are trained to provide will make a huge difference in your overall health. Daniel Blair, Pharm.D., BCPS, believes that taking the time to build relationships with his patients makes all the difference in providing each individual with the care they need. Daniel owns and operates Blair Pharmacy in Alabaster and combines this personal

attention with advanced training and cutting edge technology to bring something unique to Shelby County. To help with improving medication adherence, Daniel has a special medication packaging robot that allows for daily medication regimens to be sealed in plastic bags with directions attached. Blair Pharmacy is the only community pharmacy in Shelby County with this technology and it comes at no extra cost to patients. Additionally, patients using Blair Pharmacy benefit from Daniel’s designation as a drug information specialist and his advanced practice credentialing in pharmacotherapy. Daniel’s advice to anyone interested in improving their overall wellbeing is to talk to your pharmacist. Many people do not realize the benefits of working closely with their pharmacist. Building that

relationship is one of the best things you can do for your health and there are pharmacists in Shelby County who provide those extra services for their patients. If you routinely take several medications or live with a chronic condition, seeking out that pharmacist that will go the extra mile for you may just change your life. The Chamber is seeking volunteers for Shelby County High School on January 17. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by having them choose a random “life scenario” which includes marital/family status, education, job and salary. They learn how fast money can

be spent just on basic necessities. It’s been an eye opening experience for the past few years for the 9th graders and volunteers alike! Volunteers are asked to spend a half or whole day at the school. We will visit all the different schools in Shelby County and will need volunteers to assist us at each

school. Volunteers would manage a station and assist 9th grade students as they “pay bills” and make “life choices” based on the randomly drawn life situations. If you or your colleagues, are interested in

being a volunteer, please call Pari Barzegari at 205-6634542 ext. 106, email at pari@ shelbychamber.org or sign up online at www.shelbychamber. org. Volunteers would arrive at the schools as early as 7:30AM and the program would conclude by 3:00PM. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.
