As a preschooler I’d hide behind my mom’s legs when I met new people—I was that shy. But not at my Aunt Betsy’s wedding. Somehow putting on a lacy peach dress and being given a basket of flowers to take down the aisle unleashed a different child on the dance floor—one who cried during the bride and groom’s first dance because she had to step away from the floor. Turn on music or, better yet, a live band, and a child can dance for hours on end without a care in the world like I did that July evening with my cousin Andrea. Fast forward 31 years and one worldwide pandemic later, and once again I found myself at family wedding—a reception for a couple we had watched wed on Zoom a year before. It was the first large indoor gathering I’d been to in well over a year, and I entered the scene freshly vaccinated and apprehensive about all the people—almost like my childhood shyness. But before long, I found myself on the dance floor, once again with my cousin Andrea. Quickly, we tuned out all thoughts of a looming virus and danced the night away without abandon. It was freedom-filled bliss. To me, that is perhaps the best marker of a wedding—to be so in the moment, so focused on celebrating two people becoming one that all the sorrows and fears of the world around us fade for a brief while for feasting, dancing, merriment and perhaps a few tears of joy. That’s part of why putting together this annual wedding issue is my favorite part of my work year as I get a taste of those blissful celebratory moments for couples and their guests. Each comes with a unique story, many of them this year either during or coming out of the height of pandemic times. And now I get an extra layer of editorial joy to get to share them with all of you. In addition to our features on Shelby County brides and grooms, you’ll also find inspiration images from a bridesmaids’ luncheon and a shower grazing table, as well as wedding dresses by independent designers that I can’t stop staring at, a guide to selecting just the right wedding tie and a few pandemic-era wedding trends that are here to stay. Plus, before you get to all the wedding section goodness, we introduce you to the faith-filled artwork of Inverness resident Debra Hewitt and equally artistic iced cookies and macarons crafted by Danielle Clark from her Calera home. Cheers to all the marriages this issue celebrates, and here’s to hoping your 2022 is marked by moments where you too can pause all thought of the hard things of this world and dance the night away like a child!

Texture, prayer and gold leaf bring Debra Hewitt’s faith-filled artwork to life. BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE PHOTOS BY MARY TWEEDY ShelbyLiving.com

For Debra Hewitt, it all started with a cross. When she found herself painting one, she had no idea why. “I looked at my husband, Bobby, and said, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing, but will you come alongside me and figure it out?’” she recalls. “He told me, ‘Debra, I’ll help you figure this out. Just go paint.’” That’s exactly what she did, creating countless pieces of art that now fill her studio and the homes of people across the country. Her husband has remained by her side throughout the journey and manages her business, allowing Debra to focus on her artwork. While she’s always enjoyed art—having watched both her mother and grandmother teach themselves to paint—it wasn’t until this Oxford, Mississippi, native moved to the Inverness area that she truly realized her calling to create art. After painting the cross and continuing to grow her portfolio, Debra decided to bring some of her pieces to a festival in Mt Laurel, where Bobby bought a tent and got everything set up for her. When the event was over, she realized she had sold $900 worth of artwork. “Maybe I can do this,” she thought. A customer from that festival showed a piece of Debra’s artwork to a friend who owned a store in Knoxville—and that became the first shop to purchase her pieces. She now ships her pieces to about 60 stores nationwide. “There’s not been one [store] I’ve had to reach out to. It’s all because of God,” Debra explains. “It’s like riding a bike. I had to get on the bike and just hold onto the handlebars. I said, ‘OK, Lord, you’re holding on to me, so I’m going to trust you with what I’m doing.’” In the years since that first cross painting, the couple transformed their basement into an art studio, complete with tables Bobby built, an area for Debra’s wood panels and three Bibles—each with pages open. “I might get a nudge to put a specific scripture on the back, and then I’ll later hear from the customer that it was perfect,” she says. “I write verses on the back of every piece because I want to point everything back to (God).” Texture and gold leaf are signature elements in many of her pieces, which she creates using mixed

media, acrylic paint, water color pencils and an array of colors. “I want to see the painting like I see life: in color,” she says. “I’m inspired by nature and everything around me.” Today her art takes the form of acrylic block prints, acrylics with easels, framed acrylics, custom-framed canvases, acrylic hangers, gift art, ornaments and other custom pieces. She also

paints on silk fabric, which has become one of her favorite mediums. Whether she is depicting angels, nativity scenes, crosses, cardinals, tulips, churches or abstract creations, Debra likes to name her paintings—like ones called “Tranquility” and “Gift of Freedom,” which she created for her younger sister. She also strives to create a deeper meaning within each

piece. “When I do a painting, I want to feel something with it,” she says. “I always like to attach something sentimental to it.” For example, with her top-selling white tulip collection, she’ll ask the customer how many people are in their family or for another number that has meaning for them. Then, she’ll create a textured canvas with that specific number of
tulips. Likewise, Debra knows the importance of family and enjoys tying those relationships into her pieces. husband, two children and son-in-law. In the future, Debra hopes to partner with her daughter on her latest endeavor, and she has started working with a graphic designer to create patterns for a tableware line, showing her artistry has no limits. “When I have freedom, I feel like it makes the process better. I’m able to be more creative,” she says. “When inspiration hits, it hits. You have to be in that mode.” From the first cross she painted to the vividly colored pieces displayed in homes across the country, Debra’s artwork aims to point people to the one cross that changed her life. Not only did she discover her calling, but she also found support from those around her. “I’m grateful for how it’s grown into a full-blown company and that people like it,” she says. “Anything I need, Bobby helps with. We’re just a team.” A portion of the profit from Debra’s art goes to JH Ranch to sponsor parents to take their children there. To view Debra Hewitt’s pieces, visit debrahewittart.com and follow @debrahewittart on Instagram. Her artwork can also be found locally at The Blue Willow in Cahaba Heights and Argent in Homewood.

MUSICAL INSPIRATION One of Debra’s commissions came with a particular request—that she listen to the song “Mercy Came Running” by Phillips, Craig and Dean for the inspiration two 24-by-48-inch paintings. “When I started listening to the song, I cried. I told my husband, ‘There’s something about this,’” Debra says. “I truly got in my basement on Sunday, and the two paintings were done within 12 hours.” In those 12 hours, Debra dried tulips and goldleafed them into the paintings before sending them off to Texas. The resulting pieces not only became focal points in the customer’s home but also serve as a way for that family to share their faith with visitors who might not be Christians. “After I finished them, the client wanted me to send her a video to explain what I did. She wanted it to be a testimony,” says Debra, who prays over her artwork. “I want it to truly mean something and for them to feel that too.”

Southern Gothic Novels Recommendations from
Lee Rozelle
University of Montevallo Professor of English
Southern Gothic novels give readers a glimpse at the dark side, a chance to experience strange characters and haunted places from the safety of our comfy homes. They give us opportunities to explore our own demons and face the monster, even when that monster is us. At the University of Montevallo, my students and I have studied Gothic masterpieces from “The Fall of the House of Usher” to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and here are some of our favorites, including one of my own.
Wise Blood
by Flannery O’Connor Georgia writer Flannery O’Connor makes me cackle and cringe at the same time. Her debut novel is rich with dark satire and cutting humor, disappointment with the modern world and profound pity for it. After his release from the military, Hazel Motes turns into an atheist street preacher in an absurd and horrifying struggle with his own beliefs. To promote his “Church Without Christ,” a mummified dwarf is swiped by Enoch Emery, a troubled young man who impersonates movie star gorilla.
Sing, Unburied, Sing
by Jesmyn Ward Jojo in this novel breaks my heart. His mother neglects him, his father is in prison, and he must take care of his three-year-old sister Kayla on his own. He and the other characters in the fictional town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, are haunted by drugs, poverty and backwoods racism. They are also haunted by ghosts. Jojo’s mother Leonie sees the phantasmic presence of brother Given, and Jojo is followed by the ghost of a boy who was cruelly murdered in Parchman prison. Apparitions wait in the tall trees.
Twilight
by William Gay It’s fitting that the creepiest novel on this list begins with a wagon full of corpses and a rural graveyard pocked with exhumed caskets. William Gay’s Twilight revolves around the dreadful plots of Fenton Breece, a mortician whose ghoulish habits will keep even the heartiest reader up at night. After witnessing the undertaker stealing a family burial vault, Tyler and his sister discover that Breece has been mutilating the bodies of the people he buries. A blackmail plot ensues, and an assassin is hired. Then things get really, really bad.
The New and Improved Romie Futch
by Julia Elliott I love this novel because it mixes Southern Gothic with speculative fiction in a hilarious epic struggle between man and hog. When middle-aged taxidermist Romie Futch becomes a research subject in the shady Center for Cybernetic Neuroscience, he becomes both super genius and guinea pig, his middle-aged brain now brilliant beyond comprehension. Troubled by errant downloads that track his thoughts and actions, Romie turns taxidermy into pop art as he hunts down the legendary super pig “Hogzilla.”
Ballad of Jasmine Wills
by Lee Rozelle While channel surfing, I saw a commercial where people were eating worms for the reality TV program Fear Factor. I thought, “Why would somebody watch worm eating for entertainment? What would I eat for all that media attention?” These questions compelled me to write a book where an overweight banker is kidnapped and made the star of reality TV show called Diet Extreme. Locked inside a studio in the middle of the Alabama woods, Jasmine is tortured with fancy food, brainwashed with self-help videos and badgered with exercise routines for her growing mass of livestream fans. ARTS COUNCIL CORNER
NEW YEAR HAPPENINGS Save the dates for January concerts and tell young artists about an upcoming exhibition. Mark your calendar for the upcoming 2022 concert lineup including Cashback (Johnny Cash Tribute Band) on Jan. 7, Jimmy Hall Band (lead singer of Wet Willie) on Jan. 15, and 2BLU & the Lucky Stiffs reunion show (more on that below) Jan. 28. Other noteworthy events include the Adult Juried Art Exhibit gallery opening on Jan. 6. Also opening in January is entry for the 2022 Statewide Student Juried Art Exhibition. This exhibit is a partnership between the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Art and Art History and the University of Montevallo’s Department of Art. This juried art exhibit is open to Alabama high school students (public, private or homeschool) in 10th-12th grades. This juried exhibit provides high schoolers an opportunity to experience entering a professional level art competition at no cost to the student or the school. The exhibition will feature cash prizes for the best in each category and for best in show. Categories include painting, drawing, photography, 3D design and mixed media. Accepted artwork will be on display in the EBSCO Fine Art Gallery in the Shelby County Art Center, where renowned artists 20 January/February 2022

Along with these two, the band features Jack Dudley on bass, John Scalici on percussion, Stephen McCullough on keys and Jerry Robbins on sax. The band is known for their original twists on Delta Blues and has twice been a finalist in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Together they blend blues, rock, funk and gospel to create their own “unique brew to rock your bones and soothe your soul.” Tickets are $25 (+ tax/fees) and can be purchased at shelbycountyartscouncil.com. Danielle Clark creates cookie art in the kitchen of her Calera home.
22 January/February 2022

Scrolling through Danielle Clark’s Instagram feed is like walking through a virtual exhibit for edible art for every occasion you can think of. There are iced cookies that look like bottles and onesies in emerald green with gold accents for a baby shower, carrots and the number one for a Peter Rabbit-inspired birthday, and a set of intricate flower designs for Mother’s Day. Come Valentine’s Day there are cookies that look like pizzas that can be packaged with the greeting, “You have a pizza my heart” and baseball-shaped cookies with the message, “You’re a great catch.” For later in the year, she’s made tennis balls, graduation caps and white cookies with the words “And so the adventure begins” for the Helena High School Tennis Team Senior Night, red cookies with white letters that read “Wildcats” for Shelby County High School homecoming and volleyballs with “Good Luck” in red letters for tryouts at Thompson High School. Often you might not know just how personable her cookies designs are without their back story either. For example, for a 60th birthday, the customer told her the birthday girl loves the color blue, everything girly and sparkly, and scotch, so Danielle created a monochromic theme with different hues of blue with birthday candles, an abstract scotch glass and the birthday girl’s name. As to the cookies themselves, they have a softer bite cookie and softer icing—not like the crunchy version you sometimes get with royal icing—and a vanilla-almond flavor profile. Around Valentine’s Day she also brings out a chocolate cookie that’s a
hybrid between a cookie and a brownie that comes with equally intricate icing art. During the day, though, Danielle wears a different hat as a full-time pediatric nurse, so all of her baking happens on nights and weekends. She likes that while nursing uses one side of her brain, her cookie art uses her creative side that embraced paint and canvases when she was in high school and nursing school. “Being a nurse can be stressful, and cooking is a good creative outlet and destressor,” she says. Fittingly, her baking all started when she was in nursing school and would scroll through Instagram and see pretty sugar cookies as a way to procrastinate studying. And then when a baby shower for her best

Most of the letter she freehands, but for a particular font sometimes she’ll use a projector. Once Danielle had mastered the art of cookie icing, she moved on to her next challenge: macarons. “I always thought they were such a beautiful, delicate thing, but making them had always scared me,” she says. were a part of her business as well. While with cookies she gets to be creative with their icing art, with macarons, the creativity comes in their endless variety of flavors. For Easter she made a box with marshmallow peep, lemon, strawberry cheesecake and carrot cake macarons. Come fall she made an apple pie and salted caramel, and she purchased a blow torch to give the marshmallow cream inside the s’mores macaron an authentic flavor—before she dipped them in chocolate and topped them with graham cracker pieces. Then for Thanksgiving she introduced not only a cranberry and a pecan pie but also a cornbread. As of Christmas, she was experimenting with gingerbread, peppermint mocha and hot chocolate plus one that would remind people of a Little Debbie Christmas cake. Be it for iced cookies or macarons, Snaps and Snacks is a one-woman operation, with Danielle, fielding orders and customer communication, photographing her cookies and marketing them. But it’s work that brings her great joy as she watches ideas come to life in the sweetest way. Follow Danielle’s cookie designs at @snaps_ and_snacks_ on Instagram. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR
Travis Grappo Oak House Owner RENDERING CONTRIBUTED
The Mt Laurel area now has a pizza shop, a Mexican eatery, a Piggly Wiggly and a coffee shop, and most recently an upscale casual restaurant has been added to the mix. As of the production of this issue, Oak House was scheduled to open in mid-December for dinner Tuesday to Saturday, with a goal to open for Sunday brunch later 2022. You can learn more at oakhouseeats.com or follow Oak House Bham on Facebook and Instagram, and by reading our chat with the visionary behind the restaurant, Travis Grappo, below. Can you tell us about your background in the restaurant industry and where the idea to open Oak House came from? My father has been in the restaurant business since I can remember. I helped at his restaurants growing up, washing dishes and doing prep. I am from Tampa/St. Pete and worked at the original Outback Steakhouse in college. I went into management and became a partner for them. I ended up going to Fleming’s Steakhouse, and that’s how I needed up in Alabama. I was a partner at The Summit location from 2007 to 2013, and then I was the director of operations for Metro Diner in the state of Alabama. We went from 27 to 45 restaurants in 12 months and then to 70. COVID wrecked everyone in our industry, and my position went away. Then we moved back to Birmingham. Even when we lived here, my wife and I talked about doing our own thing in the Dunnavant Valley area since we have lived out there since 2007. I met a local landlord of the Dunnavant Valley Square who had a

in Alabama, and understands southern cuisine and fine dining.
How did you pick the name? The name was the hardest part of this deal. We really wanted something that identified the area and spoke to the population and the neighbors in this market. We wanted the word “oak” to be in it because Double Oak Mountain and Oak Mountain surround this area. We did a focus group with friends and family and our marketing director, and Oak House Can you tell us about the chef you are stuck out. Now I know it’s right as it’s becoming more and more real. working with? My chef, Oliver Robinson, was at Fleming’s for 15 years, and we were What will the look and feel of the inside partners there for six years. We were not be like? It will be very clean and modern. We just only great friends but even better business partners. We were in the top five Fleming’s had a marble bar installed with brass in the U.S. at the time because of the pendants. It’s very inviting and sleek. It’s synergy between us. He is an extremely beautiful. He’s a patio in the spring that will accommodate also good with food, was born and raised an additional 20-25. What is your vision for Oak House? I want it to be a neighborhood restaurant where people can get high quality food without driving to The Summit or downtown Birmingham. It will be American fare: hand-cut steaks, seafood, chicken. We will be serious about quality and have a good liquor beer and wine program.

forever on your
side Just before the big day, it’s time to slow down and celebrate the ladies who will be standing by your side. That’s just what this bride did with an elegant and heartfelt luncheon she won from Bromberg’s. Photos by Arden Photography ShelbyLiving.com

The Cake Pull You can order a bridesmaids luncheon cake from Olexa’s in their signature vanilla buttercream with charm pulls already in it. According to the tradition, each bridesmaid pulls a ribbon to find a charm with its own meaning and gets to keep it. Fittingly, Hannah pulled a charm with a bride and groom cake topper.
2020 was a tough year for all things weddings. Then with the advent of 2021, Bromberg’s was not only ushering in a fresh year but also their 185th anniversary of business, so the store wanted to do something special for the Birmingham community. And that’s how they decided to give away a bridesmaid luncheon along with Juliska, their bestselling giftware line, both for the community and to highlight their wedding registry—and to bring joy coming out of a difficult season. Hannah Reeder—now Hannah Reeder Evans— was selected as the winner in August and held her luncheon at Olexa’s with a selection of vendors Bromberg’s brought on board on Nov. 19. Read on to learn more about the details of the event to help inspire your own.
Floral Party Starter The design for the luncheon started with this blue and white floral Field of Flowers Chambray linen from Juliska, and all other details, including the menu, invitations and place cards by Dogwood Hill, were based on it. The napkins fit seamlessly with Hannah’s décor theme.
The Palette The spring-like color palette of the luncheon was inspired by Hannah’s wedding itself with light blues, soft pinks and whites. 32 January/February 2022
REGISTRY TABLE TRENDS Mix and Match Often brides inherit family china, so
Mix it Up The table featured two different champagne flutes, Juliska’s Amalia and Graham patterns, to add variety, along with the Isabella acrylic goblets. All of the glassware feature Juliska’s berry and thread motif that tied all of the pieces together, and the vases were also from the Graham, Amalia and Isabella lines along with the Arden—which just so happens to be the name of the event’s photographer too.
Bromberg’s bridal consultants like to work with them to select new pieces to mix in with existing ones to create a table of their own that will host memories for years to come.
Elevated Everyday The store also sees more brides only registering casual china that is dishwasher-safe

Last summer Birmingham photographer Mary Fehr got to see a new side of the Windy City: behind the scenes of its wedding market—and not just any part of it but a set of smaller independent wedding dress designers that an all-female agency, The Agency by GCG (Grace Consulting Group), represents. During her time there Mary modeled and photographed dresses while interacting with the designers themselves. “It was inspiring to see all of these designs and help get their names out there,” she says. “Being able to represent those smaller independent designers is important as well.” Here we share some of the images she created in that time.

How to Style a Shower
Grazing Table Take some inspiration for your next celebration from this grazing table created by local woman-owned businesses.
Style Board Starter Get your team of hostesses on the same page by sending a style board to keep the color scheme consistent for the party. The one for this summery table featured light greens and peaches that are especially evident in the balloon garland.

Anchor the center of your table with a large colorful floral arrangement, and then arrange all the serving plates around it.
Drink Station No need to try to squeeze your beverages in on the food table. Set a bar cart or small table next to it, and add extra florals and greenery to your ice bucket to dress it up too.
Two-Toned Why pipe icing onto cupcakes with one color and texture when you can have two? These petite cakes showcase the table’s summery palette— until they are eaten.

A Guide to Selecting Just the Right Wedding Tie Photos by Morgan Hunt | Text by Madoline Markham 2020 forever changed the way we dress. There was no need for suits on Zoom weddings and for car parades. Coming out of that extended year, though, everyone was wondering what the new normal would be. One thing is certain: nothing is as a formal as it was, as Harrison Limited owner Scott Pyburn will tell you. And when it comes to weddings, that means more are now taking place on beaches and in backyards where there’s no need for a tux for groomsmen. But once you decide the groomsmen will wear suits, what’s next? Here’s Scott’s guide to tie selection for your suit.
1. Start with color. Most couples will bring in a bridesmaid’s dress color or swatch to match menswear to. From there Scott will pull out a book of tie fabrics from Robert Jensen, a Houston-based designer that is exclusive to his store locally, and let the customer select a fabric to correspond with it.
2. Consider the weave and pattern. You can choose a weave like a pineapple grenadine or a satin one, both equally formal. The couple can also opt for a less formal striped tie with the bridesmaid dress color as one component of the pattern or for a bowtie.
3. Add a pocket square. You can go with a classic white or colors or patterns to complement the tie selection.
4. Place your order. Most stores might not have as many ties in the color and weave you select in stock as you need, so you can place an order for the number of groomsmen you have. Robert Jensen also makes a tall tie in addition to the standard size.

HOW WE MET John and I (Rachel) both went to Alabama for undergrad and had many mutual friends, but we somehow never crossed paths in college. I was in grad school in Mississippi in 2016, and I came to Birmingham to visit some of my friends for the weekend. John and I met that weekend when we both ended up hanging out at a mutual friend’s house. The rest is history!

THE PROPOSAL John proposed to me on the 14th tee box of the Shoal Creek Country Club golf course. It was such a beautiful day. John had our families waiting in the clubhouse to celebrate with us after the proposal. After spending time with our families, some of our closest friends hosted a party at their house. THE DRESS The owner of Maggie Louise Bridal in Memphis is a friend of John’s family. Molly helped both of John’s sisters find their perfect dresses, and she did the same for me! It was such a fun experience. FAVORITE MOMENT I was so happy and at peace all morning getting ready, but I was so excited to see John. Our first look was a combination of joy and excitement, and a moment that will forever be special to us. FAVORITE DETAILS John and I got married at Shoal Creek where his parents also got married, 33 years prior to us. Our wedding date is also special, as we got married on Dec. 19, just like my grandparents did. They were married for almost 50 years. I also love Christmas hymns, and our families and wedding party walked down the aisle to a few of my favorites. It was a perfect nod to my favorite time of the year, and some of my favorite Christmas hymns. ShelbyLiving.com

HOW WE MET I (Staci) had always thought David was super cute. He’s six years older than me though, so I didn’t think I ever had a chance with him. When I was in sixth grade, my friend Mandy and I watched a basketball game he was playing from the top bleachers giggling about how cute we thought he was. Little did I know, I would get to go on a date with him 10 years later when my friend Meagan connected us.

THE PROPOSAL We decided to host a party with all of our friends and family to celebrate my birthday along with a couple of other friends’ birthdays. That night David called everyone into the living room for a “thank you for coming” speech. As he was speaking, he started to say super sweet things about me and how great our relationship has been. At the end of his speech, he got down on one knee and proposed. Of course, I was so excited that all I could get out of my mouth was “Mhm.” What a beautiful moment I got to experience in front of my favorite people. Even our sweet dog, Jade, got to be a part of her parents’ happy day. FAVORITE MOMENT David has never paid attention to the cake cutting portion of other weddings we have been to, and he decided to feed himself the first bite after we cut our cake. Everyone started laughing, and I just stood there with my mouth open thinking, “What the heck are you doing?” I told him what we were supposed to do, and we proceeded to feed each other the cake. I shoved the cake all over his face, and somehow, I walked away from that table with a clean face and fresh licked fingers. We laughed about that moment for the next week!

HOW WE MET Daniel and I (Juliana) went to trade school together at the School of Technology from 2010 to 2012. We dated for a few months and still kept in touch for a little while, but then didn’t speak for about seven years until April 2020 when I messaged him on Facebook. I asked him if he knew of anyone selling a pontoon boat. He said he would check around and offered to cook me dinner and catch up. The rest is history.

THE PROPOSAL After finishing our Christmas Eve “Santa” duties, Daniel drove to the land that we are building a house on. I had been asleep in the truck, but the bumps woke me up and I asked what we were doing. He played it off as “just checking on everything,” but then he came to a stop and looked at me and asked, “Do you still want to live up here with me?” I responded, “Well duh, I told you that we could put the camper out here and move right now!” He then asked, “What would you do if I got you a ring?” and pulled out the ring that his grandfather proposed to his late grandmother with as he asked me to marry him. FAVORITE MOMENT My cousin, who was also one of my matrons of honor, surprised me with our grandmother’s wedding jewelry to wear on my wedding day. Our Mimi passed away a few years ago, but I was able to have a part of her with me on my big day. FAVORITE DETAILS Once we were pronounced husband and wife, Daniel and I walked out of the chapel to “Man of Me” by Gary Allan, a song that he has always sang to me in the car. Everyone has told me that I have been his “saving grace,” so the lyrics “loving you made a man of me” tells a part of our story.

HOW WE MET Thomas and I (Tarsi) met our freshman year of college at the loveliest village on the plains. War Eagle! Through his twin brother and my suitemate, we were set up to go to an Auburn football game together, and we didn’t truly bond until the last two minutes of the game where Auburn came back to win. In true Auburn fashion it was a roller coaster of a game, but we had the best time and knew a special connection had formed. Six and a half years later, Thomas proposed to me in an intimate gathering with our closest friends and family.

THE PROPOSAL My family and I have spent many nights at Ragtime Café, and it holds a special place in my heart. Twenty-five years ago my parents would meet up with friends for dinner and carried on the tradition as the years have gone by. Thomas proposed to me at Ragtime’s event center. The next day, our friends and Thomas threw me the best surprise engagement party. Every detail was completely perfect down to the cosmic brownies, my favorite childhood snack. FAVORITE MOMENT When I saw my grandmother for the first time, it was such an emotional moment we got to share and the sweetest embrace. My other favorite part was dancing on the dance floor with my husband and all of our friends! FAVORITE DETAILS The food! Thomas and I went to Italy for our five-year anniversary, and I also come from an Italian family. THE PROPOSAL Chase told me (Haley) that we were going to play a sunset round of golf with some of our friends one Friday afternoon in the summer. Little did I know the fifth hole had a beautiful view. When we got there, he wanted me to come see it from the tee box, which is where he surprised me and got down on one knee. He had our friends and family waiting back at his family’s house to surprise me with a party.

THE DRESS My wedding dress was the first one that I tried on. I loved the lace appliques throughout the skirt of the dress. My grandmother passed away since then, so we had a piece of the blue shirt she wore to my engagement party sewn into the skirt of the dress as my “something blue.” FAVORITE MOMENT We read letters from each other right before the first look. I was in tears before he even turned around. It was such a special moment to spend with each other before the craziness of the day started. FAVORITE DETAILS My grandmother’s favorite color was yellow, so some of my favorite details were the pale yellow flowers in mine and my family’s bouquets and my yellow shoes. I was really close with my grandmother, so it was so important to me that there were details that made her feel present even if she couldn’t be there. Chase’s grandfather built a hot rod for him when he was little that we used as our getaway car. It was so fun to drive off in at the end of the day! We got lots of comments about the “yellow car.” I also loved the greenery wall that Chase and my father-in-law made for the wedding. It made a great background for pictures. WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW I am teaching kindergarten in Pelham, and Chase is coaching PE in Hoover.

HOW WE MET Andrew and I (Anna) met in our junior year of high school at Spain Park. We went to the fair on our first date, and to this day it has always been the most fun date I’ve been on. It ended up not working out then, but he stayed persistent throughout high school. After senior year we both attended Auburn University but lost contact. Two years later we ran into each other and began to catch up. It was not long before we began dating the spring of our sophomore year of college.

THE PROPOSAL My parents’ neighbor, a photographer, asked if Andrew and I would be willing to do a couple’s photoshoot to help her with her portfolio, and we were taking photos next to Double Oak Community Church, where my family and I have attended for many years, when the photographer said she was going to change her lens. Andrew got down on one knee and proposed. As soon as I said yes, all of our family and friends ran out of the church doors. FAVORITE MOMENT When all the guests were lining up for our final exit, Andrew and I danced to “I Get to Love You” by RUELLE. As we danced, we talked about the whole day. We were fully present and the fact we were married really began to sink in. This moment was so special and intimate. I will never forget the feeling of dancing alone with my new husband. FAVORITE DETAILS During the ceremony, we had a moment where our parents came up and we prayed privately while a soloist performed “The Blessing.” We also had Cahaba River Strings play as guests were seated and during the procession. This was always a dream of mine. I loved the classic wedding songs, and I loved how romantic it made the ceremony feel. ShelbyLiving.com

At another moment, Blake’s mom Stacie gave me a box with a diamond necklace that she had made from the diamond of her mother’s engagement ring. Right before our first look, Blake and I prayed together and then read each other our vows that we decided to write. We both wanted personal vows, but for them to be shared in private and to have the traditional vows during our ceremony. As if this moment could not get better, Blake had one of his friends bring our puppy Waylon to get some pictures with us on our big day. We also decided to have a family prayer after my dad gave me away at the beginning of our ceremony. During the reception, we had something fun and personal to say for each person in the bridal party and later that we called a “photo challenge” for 2 minutes of “Marry You” by Bruno Mars where we had to go to each table to get a photo with everyone. We wanted to have a picture with everyone there to remember forever! FAVORITE DETAIL My mom cut one of the lace sleeves off her wedding dress to wrap around my bridal bouquet. She is saving the other lace sleeve for my sister for when she gets married one day. ShelbyLiving.com

HOW WE MET JT and I (Jessie) met back in 2015 while we were dental students at UAB. Everything in the school is organized based on last name, and so my “S” and his “H” kept us just far enough apart that we didn’t interact with each other very often. That was up until the first day of our third year when JT randomly sat down next to me, and we began chatting about our time off from school. That same day at lunch, a mutual friend invited us both to get coffee at our favorite local spot, Lucy’s, and we were suddenly spending more time together on this one day than we had in the past two years. From that day forward, we went to Lucy’s every day to get coffee and developed a friendship that, after a few months, turned into love.

FAVORITE MOMENT My dad had passed away several years before, and I spent a great deal of time thinking about walking down the aisle and decided that I was going to walk alone because my dad was irreplaceable. We practiced it for the rehearsal and everything was working smoothly, but something didn’t feel right. JT and I talked it over several times the next morning and decided that he and I were going to walk down the aisle together instead. It was the most perfect, romantic and special moment for me to have JT there holding my hand as we walked to the ceremony arch together. FAVORITE DETAILS Michelle Lewis at Edelweiss Design House took my vision and turned it into an amazing, jawdropping masterpiece. She made the flowers feel like they were more than just a decorative backdrop; they were a focal point for the whole weekend and incorporated into every aspect of our wedding: the cake displays, the ceremony arch, the centerpieces for the bridesmaid luncheon, the welcome table, the aisle markers. Literally everything was dripping in flowers.

HOW WE MET We met in our high school math class in 2017. Nick was a junior, and I (Callen) was a senior. We had not paid any attention to each other all year up until our friend groups started to merge in March of that year. We quickly hit it off, and the rest is history!

THE PROPOSAL Instead of Christmas gifts, we go out to a nice dinner to simply celebrate our relationship. I knew Nick had made reservations for a restaurant in downtown Birmingham, but he would not tell me exactly where. Nick had parked near Railroad Park and led me to a spot he had planned to propose. It was very sweet and intimate. After the proposal, we were able to celebrate our dinner and engagement together, just the two of us! THE DRESS I knew the moment I put this dress on that I was going to be walking down the aisle in it! It was simple, yet elegant and classy—silk with buttons all the way down the back. I added a simple beaded belt that gave it just the little bling it needed. The train of the dress was long and dramatic—my favorite part. FAVORITE MOMENT After the ceremony, we had just finished taking all of our pictures, and everyone had already walked over to the reception. Nick and I had a moment to just sit and take in the ceremony and each other and the fact that we were finally married. Nick prayed over us and for our marriage. It was a very simple and sweet moment, but a moment I will never forget. FAVORITE DETAILS I had sent my florists some pictures of colors and ideas I had seen that I liked, but I told her that I trusted her and let her work her magic. They turned out beautifully and better than I could have ever imagined. ShelbyLiving.com

Shelby County’s Business Climate in 2022 Will Be____________? Your Chamber is teaming up again this year with the University of Montevallo’s Stephens College of Business to determine what Shelby County business people think our local 2022 business outlook will look be. To do that, we’re asking Chamber investors to take a few moments to complete our Business Climate Survey developed by the Chamber’s Small Business Work Group & Dr. Amiee Mellon, Interim Dean of the Stephens College of Business to provide important feedback on business issues affecting your company for the coming year. All individual responses will be kept confidential, but the overall results will be released and shared in composite during the Chamber’s 2022 Business Outlook Conference co-hosted by the Stephens College of Business. Health Focus of the Month:
Coronary Artery Calcium Score Heart disease is the number one cause of death the United States, and has been for a long time. One of the most difficult features of this condition, specifically coronary artery plaque, is that it usually builds up silently for years before ever causing a noticeable symptom. As a result, people with this disease usually miss years of opportunity to take protective actions against it. With the large number of medications and lifestyle interventions that have been proven to reduce the risk of heart attack and death for people with this condition, that missed opportunity comes at a terrible cost. Over 25% of people with sudden heart attack or cardiac arrest reported no previous symptoms. For this reason, doctors have spent decades trying to develop early-prediction methods to identify people at risk of coronary disease.

Those who smoke or have high cholesterol or diabetes may particularly benefit because these raise the chances of developing artery plaque. At Heart South we try to make this test easily accessible and affordable. At the time of this writing, the cost is only $50. MY SHELBY COUNTY AMY STURDIVANT 58 Inc. Managing Director
For Love of the Arts
Shelby County + Montevallo Arts Centers Shelby County Arts Council’s Art Gallery and Black Box Theater at Old Mill Square and Montevallo’s Center for the Arts all celebrate and provide inspiring spaces where the fine arts can be explored and enjoyed.
Progressive Workspace
Connecting Nature, Food + Music
Creekside BBQ Outdoor tables at the new restaurant in Pelham serve mouth-watering pulled pork, give you a nature break and a view of Oak Mountain, and offer live music—all very close to Oak Mountain Amphitheater.
Cozy Italian Dining
Amore The staff make you feel at home in this fine Italian restaurant on Highway 280. My favorite meal is the Pasta per Capellini alla Bolognese. Pair it with tiramisu for dessert! It’s not far from where I work with Melody Whitten and Jackson Pruett (pictured) at 58 Inc.
Tugs at My Heartstrings
Buck Creek Dam Helena’s dam in Old Town reminds me of my hometown in Illinois that has a similar river setting. There’s a great view of it from The Depot on a sunny day by the river.
96 January/February 2022
Meadow Brook 500 Lobby An unusual favorite, but this remodeled lobby provides vision to my economic development work in Shelby County’s “Tech 280” corridor. Its hexagonal wallpaper, high-top tables and low-slung seating areas equipped with TVs for presentations excite me for the future of technology innovation in office spaces county-wide!
