2020 started off with a bang on Jan. 18 as I watched my brother’s bride process up to him at the altar of the Episcopal church where she’d grown up in Richmond, Virginia. A few hours later, the two of them—not usually ones for the spotlight—were up on the stage at their reception singing along to my brother’s favorite Tom Petty songs as the band rocked out behind them. In front of them danced a crowd clad in colorful hats, boas, sunglasses and balloons that my cousins and I had passed out to pump up the party ala a family tradition that began when one cousin married a Peruvian and introduced us to the Latin American “hora loca” (“crazy hour”). Two months later, the New York Times posted a set of readersubmitted videos of “powerful scenes from crowded places that feel almost unthinkable now.” Though I didn’t send one in, that dance floor would have been mine. Looking back at pictures, it’s so apparent that we had no concept of social distancing in our minds and no idea of what was to come. I didn’t know that by spring, I’d attend my cousin’s wedding ceremony on Zoom, putting on the dress I’d planned to wear (the first time I’d changed out of stretchy pants in who knows how long), pouring a glass of wine and opening my computer screen. I didn’t know that by summer bridesmaid duty would look like stashing my floor-length dress in the back of my closet for 2021. Instead I dropped off surprise gifts at the bride’s doorstep on wedding week, and I showed up to her parents’ house on wedding eve with a four-layer cookie cake I’d made and chatted on the back porch with their immediate family that made up all of the wedding guests, all of us in T-shirts and shorts. To the brides and grooms of pandemic-era 2020, your resilience astounds me. And while this wedding issue may, at first glance, look similar to ones we’ve published in years past, a closer look reveals its words and images are distinct to the pandemic year we’ll never forget. Dates were moved, guest lists were cut and unknowns were rampant. And yet, as the couples in this issue recount, after all the stress of changed plans, they were full of intimate, meaningful moments as they began their married lives together. Be sure to read all their accounts in the pages to come in this issue, along with our coverage of inclusion in the wedding dress industry, hair styles on trend, readersubmitted engagement stories and more wedding prettiness that will hopefully brighten cold winter days for you. Wishing you a warm and healthy start to 2021,

“ ” THE QUESTION

What has 2020 taught you?

The human spirit can overcome anything, as long as there are memes.

Resilience. Respect for all the little things I took for granted, like hugging my parents, which I have not done since March.

That even though I’m a teacher, I don’t want to be the teacher of my three sons.

How words and phrases can take on new meanings: hands on the wheel, swab, pivot, adult beverage.

How important our schools and teachers are! They are saints!!

How life is so fragile. How things can turn on a dime and how we should truly cherish each moment. Nothings lasts forever.

Friends who are neighbors and neighbors who are friends are priceless!

Our love and care for others never has to stop. Sometimes we just have to get more creative with how we show our people they are so very important.

BOLD LIKE RED

Tom Findlay fills his gallery with paintings of vibrant trees, angels and Western landscapes. BY SELAH VETTER PHOTOS BY LINDSEY CULVER HomewoodLife.com 15

16 January/February 2021

A

At first, Tom Findlay thought his paintings were marred by a mistake. Still, he packed them up for his first art show and placed them in the back of his booth, hidden behind other canvases where he hoped no one would notice their flaw. But as people looked through his paintings, they noticed the red trees—the mistake in Thomas’s mind. And they wanted the red. Today you can find his signature red trees alongside more of his paintings and works by other artists he curates in his Thomas Andrew Art gallery on 29th Avenue in downtown Homewood. When you enter the gallery, an easel is set up in the front of the store with a half-finished painting of a just-engaged young couple in a pastel colored hue. It’s a commission, he points out, which is his favorite type of work to do. He loves walking with his clients every stroke of the way during the painting process and appreciates learning the meaning that is behind the image. Art for him is not just a canvas to be bought and hung on a wall. It’s an experience, and one Tom wants to share with everyone in the gallery. Sometimes that looks like kids in art camp who make Tom laugh, and other times it looks like groups of colleagues who are there for corporate team building. Tom recalls a group of men who worked in tech for Regions Bank—a group that he says rarely, if ever, dabbles in art—and how they found humor and therapy in his team building exercise that involved painting in the outline of a Birmingham cityscape, much like a coloring book. The men sipped on the gallery’s signature drink sangria while they painted, and after they finished the painting, Tom polished it off and delivered it to their office to hang proudly on their wall. As that team created their cityscape, they were surrounded by local artwork (see sidebar for a list of featured artists) as well as Thomas’ other signature pieces in the gallery—which take us to his back story. While he was in his mid-30s, Tom no longer wanted to be a business owner as he had been until that point, but he was unsure of the next move. In

by, Tom learned the people of Birmingham weren’t going to love them. Surviving off of food samples at Sam’s Club at the time, Tom knew he had to find a new voice in order to make a living. So he did something that would change the course of his career as an artist. He asked Jim what the people wanted. The answer was something angelic with a dramatic contrast of darks and lights. Following that guidance, Tom went home, stuck a canvas on a nail in his bedroom wall and painted an angel. When a friend came over out of pity to buy a cowboy painting, she glimpsed at the angel hanging and wept, moved by the sight of the spiritual symbol. From then on, he was known as the “angel artist.” Now the angels hang next to his red trees in his art gallery, alongside the next subject Tom decided to paint—something larger, something bolder. Approaching Jim again for advice, Tom settled on painting landscapes in an impressionistic style with a color palette formed from his family’s ranch out west. “I don’t work from photographs,” he says. “People will say, ‘Where is that?’ and I’ll say, ‘It’s probably 20 places.’ It comes out of my mind. I

travel all over the country for my art shows, and you have to drive, so you see all of these places you wouldn’t from an airplane.” After all his travels though, Tom decided to grow his roots a little deeper in the place where he grew up and calls home today. On the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, not knowing what was to come, he opened the Thomas Andrew Art gallery. Painting is not the only aspect of art Tom is teaching others in his gallery space though. “I like teaching the business side (of art). That’s the hardest part,” he says. “Talent really is nothing. My dad asked me one time what’s more important: talent or passion? (It’s) passion every day. Not just passion to make the work, but to sell it. I think of art as a business, and it is if you want to make a living.” But even with his business know-how Tom’s hands—paint-splattered at any given moment—are a reminder that above all, art is his identity. “It’s just part of me. That’s part of the fun.” You can find Tom’s work in the Thomas Andrew Art gallery across Real & Rosemary on 29th Avenue South in downtown Homewood. Learn more about his art at thomasandrewart.com or @thomasandrewart on Facebook and Instagram.

TEMPTATIONS OF MAN Most of the time Tom paints for others, but sometimes he paints for himself too. After his brother passed away at age 44 after a battle with alcoholism, Tom explored darkness and temptation in his art, to tell his brother’s story and as a therapeutic act for himself. This series of paintings tells a story of why we are tempted and who’s tempting us—and today you can find it in the far back of his gallery.

Anti-Racist Books Recommendations from

The Berthiaume Family

Anti-Racist Little Library Founders

Brian and Kristen Berthiaume and their children Emma, Owen and Lily opened up the Anti-Racist Little Library (@AntiracistLibrary20) in front of their house on Clermont Drive as a response to George Floyd’s death last summer. The library stocks books for all ages with central characters of color or that specifically address racism. Visitors can leave relevant books for others and take home new ones to return later or keep forever. Here are a few of the family’s favorite anti-racist books.

The Colors of Us

by Karen Katz For Baby to Toddler: This book addresses differences in skin tone in a concrete, easy-to-understand way by making comparisons to foods little ones have encountered like French toast and honey. The main character is painting a picture of herself and wants to use brown paint; however, after a walk through her neighborhood, she discovers that brown comes in many different shades. This book provides a way to encourage your child to talk about the differences she notices in skin tone, an important skill.

Black is a Rainbow Color

by Angela Joy For Elementary Age Kids: This beautiful picture book celebrates Black culture and poetically weaves in important historical allusions throughout. Younger kids will enjoy thinking about all the places the color black can be found from the tire of a school bus to the robe of Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court justice. Older children will learn a lot from the appendices that explain references in the book, and provide additional resources like famous works by Black poets and a fun song playlist featuring Black artists.

New Kid

by Jerry Craft For Tweens: This engaging graphic novel tells the story of seventh grader Jordan Banks as he enters a prestigious private school as one of the few kids of color in his grade. As Jordan tries to find his place, he is constantly reminded that he is “different” by other characters’ comments and behavior. This book authentically explores the issue of “microaggressions,” or slights, indignities and insults that people of color experience in their dayto-day interactions with others and provides an excellent jumping off point for discussion with your tween.

The Hate U Give

by Angie Thomas For Teens: This novel, also a 2018 film, tells the story of Starr Carter who exists in two worlds: her predominantly Black neighborhood and her predominantly White prep school. Starr’s story highlights the toll of “code switching,” or moving between multiple social identities, depending on the context, for Black girls in particular. When a childhood friend is fatally shot by a police officer, Starr must learn to speak up for what she believes is right. Teenagers will find this story to be timely amidst current news stories.

Just Mercy

by Bryan Stevenson For Adults: This memoir tells the story of how Bryan Stevenson came to form the Equal Justice Initiative through his tireless representation of a Black man named Walter McMillian, sentenced to die for a murder he did not commit. Even as he fights oppression within the legal system that holds Walter captive, Stevenson himself encounters racism in Monroeville, Alabama. After you read it, be sure to check out the excellent film version from 2019.

OF BRUT & BURGUNDY Classic Wine Company wants to share the smells, sights and sounds of vineyards in each of their bottles. BY AMY HOLDITCH PHOTOS BY BRADLEY BURCKEL HomewoodLife.com 25

26 January/February 2021

M

My love affair with wine began in Dijon, France, 20 years ago. I was studying abroad and found myself smack dab in the middle of the Burgundy wine region and was eager to explore. I had only limited exposure to red wine at the time, and felt sure this excursion would expedite my knowledge and teach me the proper wine speak and drink. While there, we visited the village of Givry, a commune in the Saône-et Loire, Clos de la Baraude region to be exact. I toured the vineyard and the caves, smelling, swishing and tasting as I went, reveling in the fact that within each bottle lies an opportunity to explore the region from which it came. It was there that I had the most perfect glass of wine. I soon learned that no two bottles are alike, and to know the history of your glass is to truly dive into the experience. In fact, I found that learning the history of wine is almost as fun as drinking the wine. Almost.

Twelve years before my journey of discovery in France, Tony Meyer started Classic Wine Company in Homewood in 1988. The original idea behind the store came from visiting other regional wine stores and realizing a need for one in Birmingham. He wanted to offer rare and unique wines of all price points, something that many other markets were already able to do in neighboring cities. He set up shop on 29th Avenue in Homewood and served the community many years before retiring. From there Josh Terrell, formerly the Bon Vivant, wine/buyer and manager at Hop City in downtown Birmingham, took the reins, bought the store from Meyer in 2016 and reopened it in Soho Square, in a space not unfamiliar with wine since it previously housed DoDi-Yo’s restaurant. Josh clearly has a passion for what he sells. As he tells the story, “I fell in love with wine thanks to my HomewoodLife.com 27

father-in-law, Ed Allen. He gave me a nice bottle of wine from my birth year for my 22nd birthday. I began learning about wine from that point forward.” And a key part of that journey, for him, is a great shop to help guide you and lead you to new experiences in the vast world of wine. “I love finding new wines, new wine regions and new wine producers,” he says. “I love meeting the people behind the product and listening to their passion about their wines or their vineyards. Being a winemaker takes a ton of confidence in yourself, your ‘place’ and your product. Their passion fuels me to tell others about this really cool wine or place. “It’s absolutely the best way to take someone, especially these days, to another place where the wine is produced. I want to give them an experience of what it’s like to be there. The smells, the sights, and the sounds of the vineyard.” By “these” days, he of course means COVID-19. “(It) has changed a lot of our worlds. We have gotten a lot busier. We started curbside service in March and did that for nine weeks. We have been wearing masks since day one and sanitize after all transactions. We sanitize customers’ cards to stop the spread and also table and carts after each use,” 28 January/February 2021

Josh says. “We shut down tastings until very recently, and our bar was shut down for most of the spring and summer. We have only just started offering socially distanced wine tastings on Friday with Zoom as an option, and our bar is now open with socially distanced tables.” The store itself is large, and the wine selection expansive. Customers are immediately greeted and left to wander between the aisles of bottles French Burgundies and Oregonian pinot noirs, perhaps lingering a moment or two before moving on to the next one. Stryker, the shop dog, oversees his clientele with watchful eyes, assuring all is in order. Employees are busy stocking and restocking as customers come and go, but service and hospitality are clearly their main focus. “I love letting my nerd flag fly here,” says Rachel Mobley, who has been a part of the Classic Wine Company team for about two years. “I love our events the most. It’s such a great opportunity to use my knowledge and get others excited about the wines that I am currently into. Our events are smaller now and we try to control the count so we can keep people apart. We still want to provide our customers opportunities to participate, but also to feel safe.”

Classic Wine Company was first opened in 1988, but current owner Josh Terrell bought it in 2016 and moved the business to Soho.

HomewoodLife.com 29

Homewood resident Jennifer Salvant is a fan of the store. “I love that I can call and have my flavor profile matched by either the owner or an employee,” she says. “I place my order, call when I arrive, and they promptly deliver to my car, fully masked, with hand sanitizer in hand. Inside, you’ll be greeted by a kind-hearted dog with different colored eyes, which is truly a perk.” Plus, she says, “they are never pretentious. I am comfortable asking questions because I get the feeling they really just want to help their customers. They aren’t in it for the up sell.” Sadly, not all bottles are perfect. Josh says there are two main reasons to send a bottle of wine back. Most commonly, a cork taint makes the wine smell like wet cardboard or mildew. Second, it could be

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Danny Hiatt

The Valley Hotel Regional Director & General Manager RENDERING CONTRIBUTED

We’ve all been watching the new hotel go up on 18th Street, and now the 129-room Curio Collection by Hilton hotel is set to open January 19. “Its design will be a blend of southern charm and modern lifestyle with classic elements and tailored details that draw on surrounding natural elements,” General Manager Danny Hiatt tells us. We chatted with him to learn more about its dining offerings for both guests and locals and what else we can look to see when the hotel opens its doors. Can you start by giving us an overview of the hotel concept? The Valley Hotel is a number one a Curio by Hilton hotel, which is a collection of independent hotels that are about all things local. We are excited for the opportunity to partner with all the local businesses. We have art by local artists in the guest rooms and throughout the lobby that will also have a see-through fireplace. We are also creating guest room packages with local retail items, and we have a sundry shop by the front desk we hope will offer local items too.

The Terrace Bar will be a high-energy location looking over 18th Street with views of downtown and Vulcan. If you are standing in front of Ed’s Pet World it’s on the right-hand corner on the second level of the hotel opposite Maple Biscuit Company. We’ll also have an upscale coffee bar and café that will offer locally sourced food and coffee. It will have an outdoor courtyard and bistro that will allow guests to go outside.

How will these dining concepts be unique to Homewood? We will source local ingredients for Ironwood. We want to create an There will be several dining destinations experiential destination. We want to tap in in the hotel that will be open for guests and locals. Can you tell us about those? with the local craft beer scene and we will Ironwood Kitchen and Cocktails is an have specialty drinks with fresh upscale kitchen and bar. We will focus on ingredients. We will have a wine list we elevated comfort food to reimagined think will be state-of-the art from different southern comfort staples. The concept is vineyards and varietals. iron meets fire with the history of Birmingham’s iron production. We will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner there. 34 January/February 2021

What event spaces will the hotel offer? Adjacent to the bar is our ballroom foyer area with floor-to-ceiling windows with beautiful views. Our upscale Red Mountain ballroom has about 4,300 square feet. It’s absolutely gorgeous. We have already had about three dozen wedding inquiries for it. We also have a Shades Creek Room that is about 900 square feet and is off the ballroom. It can be used for corporate meetings. Downstairs we have the Vulcan Board Room that will have state-of-the-art technology. How do y’all approach opening a hotel in the middle of a pandemic? We are opening during COVID, but Hilton has been a world leader in their cleanliness and sanitation program to ensure guest safety and sanitation. After we sanitize and clean a room, we put a door seal on the room, and every touch point is sanitized. We want everyone to feel comfortable and safe as we get through this pandemic.

WEDDINGS

JUST THE RIGHT FIT

Saying yes to the dress is no small moment for a bride, and that’s why designers and retailers are recognizing it’s important that she have the shopping experience she’s always dreamed of, no matter her size. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR Can I open this article with a confession? I have been wedding dress shopping with friends numerous times. We’ve looked through racks of lace and tulle and ooed and ahed each time the bride stepped out of the dressing room in a new look, anticipating how stunning she would look as she walks down the aisle to her groom. Saying yes to a wedding dress is no small moment in a woman’s life, and for most it’s the most notable shopping experience she will have and the biggest investment she’ll make in her lifetime. And yet, given my bias based on my dress size and size of the friends I have been with, never had I given thought to size availability at dress retailers. But then I talked to Christina Sloan, owner of the new Refined Bridal Boutique in downtown Birmingham. Here’s what I learned from her: At most wedding dress shops, the average sample size of dresses for brides to try on is a 12. Because wedding dresses tend to run smaller than everyday clothing, that 12 fits more like an 8. Add to that equation that the average woman in America is a size 16-18, and you quickly see that many brides aren’t able to try on sample dresses in traditional boutiques, that they aren’t able to have that dream-fulfilling shopping experience I have had with friends and their moms. Often these brides have seen no choice but to order their wedding dress online without being able to try it on. As a wedding planner for six years, that’s just what Christina was seeing with brides she worked with, and why 36 January/February 2021

she wanted to open a shop with a different set of sample sizes. “I felt like brides shouldn’t have to compromise their experience,” she says. She recognizes that for wedding dress shops it’s hard to carry a standard selection of sizes and also carry a great selection of curvy or plus sizes, so her shop carries exclusively size 14 or above, with sample sizes starting at 16 and going up to size 40. It’s one of few shops in the Southeast with these offerings and the only one in Alabama. Christina also notes that the dress selection is just as important. “So often plus size dresses are not stylish or trendy,” she says. “They are old fashioned. I wanted to bring designer dresses in the curvy and plus size realm.” In fact, Christina has consulted with several wedding dress designers to develop a curvy line as part of their collections. “Almost

38 January/February 2021

any dress can be modified to plus-sized,” she says. “Adding a bit of boning and shape wear inside the dress and making sure there is added structure and support in there are key. You can still have the plunging V-necks but have support in the bust cups.” It’s also important to see these designs on sizeinclusive models on the runways and print and social media too, Christina notes. “I think every bride wants to be able to see herself, and it’s so hard to do that when we are looking at (thin) models,” she says. “We need to have representation of what we really look like as women.” Photographer Mary Fehr, who took the photos in this article and modeled in some of them, speaks to HomewoodLife.com 39

the importance of size inclusion from her side of the wedding industry too. “People put their best work out there, and a lot of times that means they are showing off thin white people,” Mary says. “When you are only showing that in your portfolio, then diverse bodies and people aren’t seeing themselves represented. It’s important because that’s how people see themselves.” Christina is hopeful that the wedding dress industry is heading in good directions in this regard as she is seeing more designers wanting to add plus sizes to their collections and hopes to see their size charts go up to 30-32 or above to accommodate the curves of women in designs that are still stylish. And that, in turn, will mean that brides don’t have to settle for less than the dress experience of their dreams. “Size inclusivity is coming a long way in fashion, and it’s making its way into bridal,” Christina says. “I’m excited to see where it goes.”

SHE SAID YES Proposal Stories You Shared With Us

As a divorced mother of three I didn’t foresee marriage for a while, but God had other plans. At brunch my now-husband gave each of my daughters a necklace and told them how much he cared for them and loved them. Then he pulled out a red ring box, and he told the girls that he wanted to take care of us and he wanted to be my husband, with the magic question, “Will you marry me?” The girls said yes before I could! -Charmeretta Hayes Timothy

I planned to go to dinner with my Mom at Gianmarco’s. When we got to the restaurant, my mom had to “use the restroom,” and I was seated in the “overflow” dining room dressed with white tablecloths and beautiful centerpieces. As I walked in, a slideshow of our pictures started playing, and my family and my now-husband’s family started to join me one by one. Lastly, my husband came out and asked me to marry him! -Mattie Boyd Cleveland

A book of the best love poems with the box inside—way before the Sex and the City movie. He asked me to pick a poem to read at our wedding one day. I opened to find the box and found him on one knee. -Katie Cesnick Ross

One summer my now-husband stopped by Homewood High School to see Coach Newton, and he called me to say his car wouldn’t start and asked if I would pick him up. When I used my key to his car, it cranked right up! I found him inside by the freshman lockers where we first met, and he was standing with a cookie cake—my favorite—that said, “Will you marry me?!” -Paige Lowery

My husband told me we were going to see his dad in North Carolina. I always sleep in the car, and when I woke up we were actually at Mountain Lake Lodge in Virginia where Dirty Dancing— my all-time favorite movie—was filmed. My husband proposed in front of the 200 other guests during “I’ve Had the Time of My Life.” We performed that dance including the lift at our wedding reception too! -Lauren Elizabeth Ellis

Rusty was standing on the side of Lakeshore at the I-65 exit with a sign that read, “Deana, will you marry me?” As I drove into town from graduate school in Mobile, I saw him on the side of the road. Our parents (who knew of his plan) were so nervous knowing he was on the side of the road with a diamond ring! -Deana Richardson Hughes

How We Met: Patrick and I (Kensie) met our senior year of high school at the Homewood High School Homecoming Dance. Patrick attended the dance with one of my close friends, and we had the opportunity to get to know each other at the after party. After talking for a few months, we made plans to go to get ice cream, but the ice cream shop was closed. So, we ended up at McDonald’s for a 99-cent vanilla cone. The Proposal: On a hike at Oak Mountain in November, Patrick got down on one knee and asked me to

marry him. The Wedding Dress: I always knew I wanted to get my gown from Bustle, and it was the very first place we went to look. When I saw THE dress on me in the mirror, it truly did take my breath away. I gasped. My mom was crying and I was teary eyed. It was so perfect—and it even had pockets! Favorite Moment: Being a COVID bride was definitely hard. We had to cut our guest list back drastically, and our venue changed three times. I think it all ended up being for the best though. We

WEDDINGS had a small ceremony and reception with 60 of our closest people. The small reception was so fun and intimate, and we danced and drank the night away! Favorite Details: We were both very picky about everything being cohesive. From the save the date to the party favors, everything needed to go together—and it did. We are also both very detail-oriented, and everything that Suzanne with Stems & Styles did exceeded our expectations, from the dinner table arrangements to the bouquets. How We Met: Wesley and I (Abby) met at Homewood Middle School when we were in the sixth grade. I had a major crush on Wesley in 2011. Our senior year of high school we went to both the Homecoming dance and Prom together. I remember telling my mom, “I’m nervous to start dating him because I think he’s the man I’m going to marry.” Soon after graduating in 2013, we officially started dating. The Proposal: Wesley asked if he could come over to my place to cook us dinner, and as we were getting ready to

eat, he got down on one knee. I was so shocked that at first I thought he was picking up lint from the rug! I just said, “What are you doing?” We barely ate the amazing dinner he prepared because we were so excited. Afterwards he told me we were going somewhere… to a party to celebrate with our friends and family! Favorite Moments: As Wesley shook his brother’s hand at the altar, Griffin handed him a small turtle. Don’t worry, it was quickly placed into a container with water. No animals were harmed! Leading up to the wedding my

mom kept joking about it not being fair that there is a father-daughter dance but no mother-daughter dance, so I made sure we had a moment together for one. Lastly, as the reception was wrapping up our guests were not ready to go home. After some loud chanting the band agreed to one more song. Favorite Details: We custom designed cocktail napkins with fun facts about each of us. Guests had fun reading/finding out all of the different fun facts! How We Met: Horace and I (Jasmine) actually met at his church one night during a life group session called X-Press. At the beginning, neither of us were looking at each other in a romantic light, but we began to develop a friendship as time went on. One night in particular Horace took the time to express to me how he thought I was beautiful with a beautiful spirit. From there we began paying more attention to one another, and sooner than later he asked to take me on a date and then asked me to be his lady that night. It was truly a moment I

will never forget. The Proposal: Our proposal took place on Morris Avenue near a greenery wall. Horace planned it as if we had a photo shoot for Black Couples Revolution to be featured on their Facebook page. Once we completed the photoshoot for the “special feature,” people literally started popping out from everywhere! I realized all of our family and friends were there to support us during one of the most memorable days of our lives. Horace then got down on one knee and popped the big question. Of course, I said

WEDDINGS YES! And beautiful confetti was thrown into the air in celebration of our love. Favorite Moment: Our absolute favorite moment was expressing our sincere vows to one another. It is one thing when a person tells you that he/she loves you, but when they are willing to go over and beyond for you AND express their love for you in front of God and all of your family and friends, it is truly something beautiful. There was not a dry eye in the room during this special moment of the ceremony, and we will cherish the words shared for the rest of our lives.

Favorite Moments: When Tucker and I (Mackenzie) were planning our wedding our two “must haves” were inviting whoever we wanted and a big dance floor. When COVID hit, we realized that those would be hard to pull off with the social distancing guides. We had planned to have our rehearsal dinner at Iron City, and they had a cancellation on that Saturday so we did a last-minute switch up to a wedding that was just family and wedding party there instead of at Mathews Manor as we had originally planned. It was a

blessing in disguise! We had a beautiful rehearsal dinner in Tucker’s family’s backyard. We were still able to dance, and we were surrounded by our most special people. Tucker is notorious for ripping his pants from dancing, and by the end of the night, his pants were split in half. We had such a fun wedding party and spent all night dancing. We even ended up on stage in matching cowboy hats leading all of our friends in the song “Friends in Low Places.” The best part of all of the COVID craziness is that we are going to have a one year anniversary

How We Met: Jordan and I (Sadie) both grew up in Homewood. We had many mutual friends, but it wasn’t until we shared a class our junior year that we really started to notice each other. Our mutual friend invited us to hang out one weekend, and we were inseparable from then on. We were 16 when we first started dating! The Proposal: Jordan planned a weekend trip with our best friends to Blue Ridge, Georgia. He kept the secret so well that I was convinced that this was not THE weekend, but little to my

knowledge everyone was in on it. We were getting ready to go to dinner and were outside taking pictures of the incredible view of the mountains. We posed for a picture, but I felt Jordan step away from me. When I turned, he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating in the beautiful town of Blue Ridge. The Wedding Dress: Something beautiful, something simple, something sweet. I had dreamt about my wedding dress since I was a little girl. This was

The Proposal: Sam planned to propose in the vineyard on our last day on a trip to Sonoma, California, but woke up with a stomach bug (probably nerves!). He proposed to me (Callie) the following day overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and it was beautiful! Favorite Moments: Mid-March, we realized that our day wasn’t going to go as planned. Cue all of the tears. With all of the uncertainty of everything, we decided to still get married because that was important to us. Our photographers encouraged us to make the day as

special as possible. My favorite moment was our first look. It wasn’t the day we imagined, but seeing Sam and knowing that we were about to be husband and wife was the sweetest thing. We had ten people at our ceremony. With the pews empty, we said our vows. Our family set up a Zoom call for people to join in and also had our local family and friends outside for a car “parade” to congratulate us. We ended the day with takeout from GianMarco’s, a homemade wedding cake made by a dear friend, and having our first dance in our kitchen.

How We Met: Jenna and I (Will) grew up attending the same elementary school, so we’ve known of each other for as long as we can really remember. However, in fifth grade I noticed a very, very cute girl sitting at the other end of the lunchroom. I carried that crush with me for about a year, until I word got out at a high school football game when we were in sixth grade. Some of my friends went to find Jenna and asked (on my behalf) if she’d be willing to date me. She said, “I’d rather die.” It was truly a tragic night. However, that answer changed

gradually, and shortly after we both turned 16, I asked Jenna to go with me to Sam’s Deli in Edgewood (still our favorite!). The Proposal: I proposed to Jenna on one knee in front of Reid Chapel at Samford University. This was the same spot where Jenna and I first kissed, and we’d had countless picnics and dates there since. I prepared an antique box with three items in it. First, I had a CD with several songs that I’d written and recorded for Jenna over our years of dating. Second, I had written and printed

WEDDINGS a poem that I stood and read to her after giving her the songs. The poem ended with the lines, “My love, will you marry me?” This led to the third item: the ring! Favorite Moment: Jenna and I had chosen to dance to Willie Hutch’s “I Choose You” for our first dance. However, she didn’t know that I was actually writing and recording a new song for her until that very moment. Right before we started dancing, I stopped and explained the backstory of song to her and everyone present. Then as we danced, we relived all the years of our life together.

How We Met: Troy and I (April) met on a dating app. After a great two-hour phone call, I agreed to go to dinner. Our dinner turned into a four-hour first date! The Proposal: On a hike at Moss Rock, Troy attached the ring to a silver bow tie collar and put it on my dog Boomer. Boomer came running up to me, and Troy got down on his knees to propose. We showed up at my mother’s house for pictures, and the living room was full of friends and family there for a surprise engagement party! COVID hit a few months later, so that party turned

out to be the only party we were able to have during our engagement. Favorite Details: We originally planned a destination wedding in Cabo San Lucas, and then COVID arrived and abruptly cancelled our plans. How We Met: Being from the same hometown, Nicholas and I (Mary Allison) knew of each other, but we never crossed paths. Fast forward to being adults: we both attended a Bible study at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where mutual friends connected us. We had an instant connection and talked all night on our first date. The Proposal: Nicholas created this elaborate story to get me dressed up and to go to the restaurant where we had our first date. We strolled in Homewood Park for a bit first, and he began sharing

some of his favorite memories that we have made together as a couple and expressed the desire to keep making these memories. He got down on one knee, and the rest is history! Favorite Moment: Our favorite moment was our first dance. We loved being able to experience those first intimate moments of marriage surrounded by our family and friends. We thought it was only appropriate that we get married in the church that brought us together. The mutual friend who connected us at Bible study is also a

WEDDINGS talented vocal performer and was the canter in our wedding and sang my favorite hymn “Ave Maria.” Favorite Details: Nicholas’s ring was his late grandfather’s and is engraved on the inside with his grandparents’ initials and wedding date. We also had our initials and wedding date engraved inside of it. A bridesmaid’s grandmother handmade and stitched a handkerchief, and Nicholas’s great-grandmother passed down a handkerchief. These items as well as the bride’s baptismal bonnet were used to wrap my bouquet.

How We Met: John Michael and I (Carrie) met via a blogger. Kelly Stamps has been setting up people for the past 10 years. We were actually the 18th out of 23 couples who met via her. She created an Instagram account and people could message each other. So, I reached out to John Michael, and he asked me out on a date that same day. Our first date was 13 hours long. The Proposal: John Michael had been working on a proposal for a while, but then COVID threw a wrench in the mix. He got all my friends to sing a line

from my favorite Taylor Swift song and then put it together. My sister and best friend and her family were in my backyard with fun signs. Then he had an iPad set up to play the video. After the video ended, he was behind me proposing. The Wedding Dress: The second I showed my roomies the dress, they both burst into tears and told me how much they loved it. I was able to get a custom bow made for the dress, which was a dream of mine! Favorite Moment: We danced to

WEDDINGS

“Slow Dance in a Parking Lot,” and we got surprised by the actual singer himself singing on Zoom. We were so overwhelmed and grateful that he took the time to surprise us and perform his song for us to dance to. Favorite Details: I loved how much we were tastefully able to add pink into our wedding. We also decided to have a tailgate wedding so that we could invite more people to our wedding. We had people sit in their cars and stream it via an FM radio station. It was very outside-thebox but also so much fun!

February Virtual Membership Luncheon 12PM

The Homewood community really showed up this holiday season to support the many local merchants of downtown Homewood and beyond. We hosted a somewhat different holiday open house experience this year, transitioning it to market days, which gave shoppers the opportunity to shop while spreading out physically. Each day, we had live performances at the curve while shoppers participated in the many offerings from local shops. Some of our amazing performers were Alice Bargeron, Allen Barlow, and Homewood Theatre.

MY HOMEWOOD JESSICA DAWSON

Founder of The Village for Moms + Mom of Three

Caffeinated Mom

Seeds Coffee Co. I love Seeds because they’re a little out-of-the-box for a coffee shop. Their caramel latte and avocado toast are my favorites. I also appreciate their section for kids with toys, couches and an old school Nintendo. It’s the perfect spot for moms to catch up with littles in tow!

Fun with Friends

Soho Social I really love a good evening with friends on the patio at Soho Social. It’s a kid friendly spot, and the “Totchos” (loaded tater tots) on the appetizer menu are a delicacy.

The Good Ole Days

Our Community Teacher lists posted on school doors. Parents walking kids to and from school. Neighborhood kids catching fireflies after dinner. Homewood makes it feel like our kids are experiencing glimpses of life in “the good ol’ days.”

Local Gifts Galore

The Cottage Basket Anytime I need to pick up a quick gift or treat myself, The Cottage Basket always comes to mind. My favorite item is their signature dough bowl candle. They smell delicious and make a perfect gift for any occasion!

Mommy Workouts

FIT4MOM Birmingham Naturally, I love all things related to moms, and Fit4Mom workouts are tailored to moms with kids. Their workouts are held in parks and community spaces. It’s a great way for moms to focus on themselves, get to know other moms and entertain their kids.
