ON THE COVER

Shaw & Chandler

Wesley Shaw and Peyton Chandler married at Independent Presbyterian Church and then held an intimate reception at Ovenbird that was inspired by Peyton’s Italian roots. Photo by Lauren Bailey Photography Design by Kimberly Myers

2020 started off with a bang on Jan. 18 as I watched my brother’s bride process up to him at the altar of the Episcopal church where she’d grown up in Richmond, Virginia. A few hours later, the two of them—not usually ones for the spotlight—were up on the stage at their reception singing along to my brother’s favorite Tom Petty songs as the band rocked out behind them. In front of them danced a crowd clad in colorful hats, boas, sunglasses and balloons that my cousins and I had passed out to pump up the party ala a family tradition that began when one cousin married a Peruvian and introduced us to the Latin American “hora loca” (“crazy hour”). Two months later, the New York Times posted a set of readersubmitted videos of “powerful scenes from crowded places that feel almost unthinkable now.” Though I didn’t send one in, that dance floor would have been mine. Looking back at pictures, it’s so apparent that we had no concept of social distancing in our minds and no idea of what was to come. I didn’t know that by spring, I’d attend my cousin’s wedding ceremony on Zoom, putting on the dress I’d planned to wear (the first time I’d changed out of stretchy pants in who knows how long), pouring a glass of wine and opening my computer screen. I didn’t know that by summer bridesmaid duty would look like stashing my floor-length dress in the back of my closet for 2021. Instead I dropped off surprise gifts at the bride’s doorstep on wedding week, and I showed up to her parents’ house on wedding eve with a four-layer cookie cake I’d made and chatted on the back porch with their immediately family that made up all of the wedding guests, all of us in T-shirts and shorts. To the brides and grooms of pandemic-era 2020, your resilience astounds me. And while this wedding issue may, at first glance, look similar to ones we’ve published in years past, a closer look reveals its words and images are distinct to the pandemic year we’ll never forget. Dates were moved, guest lists were cut and unknowns were rampant. And yet, as the couples in this issue recount, after all the stress of changed plans, they were full of intimate, meaningful moments as they began their married lives together. Be sure to read all their accounts in the pages to come in this issue, along with our coverage of inclusion in the wedding dress industry, hair styles on trend, reader-submitted engagement stories and more wedding prettiness that will hopefully brighten cold winter days for you. Wishing you a warm and healthy start to 2021,

“ ” THE QUESTION

What has 2020 taught you? The beauty of staying at home. Paying attention to the simple things that we ignored as we moved around so quickly. Rediscovering how beautiful a place we live.

To care for your neighbors. I appreciate how our community came together to support each other while parents were trying to work, teach, and keep our families safe and protected.

The example I set to my children is the example they will set to the world.

Flexibility! You may have wonderful plans that don’t happen as you want them to. I find that the new plan is sometimes even better.

Don’t take anything for granted! I didn’t appreciate the freedom of going to a concert or birthday party or grocery store without having to wear a mask.

Family, friends and community tend to be the best vaccine for troubling times!

I learned to slow down and appreciate every day. Life is unpredictable so you have to adapt (and that’s not always a bad thing). And I am most grateful for the extra time with my children!

Keep your sense of humor, use it often, make people smile, and walk like hell on the Jemison trail.

A VIBRANT STORYBOOK

Citrus and foxglove florals, coastal landscapes, and playful abstracts are becoming distinctly Camilla Moss. BY ELIZABETH STURGEON PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR MountainBrookMagazine.com 13

Artist Camilla Moss paints watercolors in her Brookwood Forest home.

E

Each of Camilla Moss’s illustrations comes to life like a charming corner of a storybook. Her botanicals fall carefully like patterned Chinoiserie wallpaper, and her landscapes settle a quiet moment on the marshy water. The homes she paints live and breathe in bright color with families gathered inside. Just a few years ago, these illustrated moments were far from Camilla’s day-to-day normal though. She found herself knee-deep in spreadsheets as a full-time CPA until she swapped the computer for her watercolor set and dedicated time to a newfound passion for painting many different subjects— crosses and angels, botanical patterns, landscapes, architecture, crests and more. This January, as her youngest son, David, celebrates his third birthday, Camilla is celebrating three years as an artist, and that’s no coincidence. Her last day as an accountant and first few days into painting all follow the timeline of when David was born. “Our lives changed in an instant,” she says. During an ultrasound in late 2017, Camilla and her husband, Walker, found out that David had some genetic issues, which they would later find out were Down syndrome. He was born the next year

with complications, requiring extended hospital time, and he ended up having heart surgery months later. When Camilla first got back home to Brookwood Forest from the hospital, her mother encouraged her to paint a few monograms for her friends, and

this project sparked a new interest. “All the things that we were going through were really hard,” Camilla says. “Painting gave me joy, and I was able to escape into something so colorful and beautiful. The Lord carried us through this time and provided me with this gift.”

As she stayed home with David as he grew and overcame different health complications, Camilla slowly built up her skills as she painted. Eventually, she was painting every day and finding the subjects and techniques that she enjoyed incorporating into her work. Her monograms and stationery naturally moved into still life pieces and crosses and angels that reflect her faith. “I’m drawn to illustrations and their whimsical nature,” Camilla says. She captures everyday subjects and florals with vivid colors and an impressionistic touch—a captivating style for hazy watercolors. Camilla, continually building her skillset, paints what brings her joy—citrus and foxglove florals, coastal landscapes, playful and light abstracts, and still moments from inside a church sanctuary or over a watery cityscape. As 2021 begins, she hopes to create more repeating pattern designs and dreams to one day see her work on fabric or create a fabric line. Two of her favorite pieces right now are a couple of her landscapes on the coast, reflective of the soft marshes and waves that Camilla knows well from her family’s house at the Gulf. “The coast was a big part of my life growing up. All of those good memories come flooding back when I paint them,” she says. She lets the strokes and pigments take control on the paper and embraces the loose, flowing feel. In her architecture portraits, she doesn’t confine the homes to sharp lines and 18 January/February 2021

angles. She lets each house try on the welcoming colors and take the life of a French villa out of Ludwig Bemelmans’ “Madeline.” All of these elements—her look, her methods, her vibrant color palette—are born from Camilla’s self-taught practice. “I paint every day, and that’s where my confidence comes from. I’ve been in love with the process from day one, and when I want something, I work really hard for it,” she says. Once she began to establish her style, Camilla thought that sharing her work with others was the next step forward. She started posting her work on Instagram towards the end of 2018, and she moved from her Etsy account to her website in May 2020. This is when her background in accounting helped her launch the business smoothly through the process of photographing, marketing and shipping her own work. While she still takes up accounting work here and there, painting allows her to push away structure and objectivity to instead let her creative mind take control in color. And now, as year three begins for her time as an artist, she still feels that there’s so much more room for her work to grow and for her style to become even more defined and distinctly Camilla. “There’s so much left to learn, and I’m excited for where it’s headed,” she says. “It’s been a huge blessing to have an outlet where I can explore.” Find Camilla’s art at camillamoss.com @camillamossdesigns on Instagram and Facebook.

or

GIVING BACK From time to time, Camilla supports causes and organizations near to her heart through her artwork. One organization she’s sold work for is The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs, where David receives therapy. “It has been a blessing, and the center has been such a big part of our life.”

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Dogwood Hill Founder PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

For Jennifer Hunt, there is a high value in the care shown from a friend when a beautifully designed piece of mail arrives. And that’s why she developed a brand of cards and more that works with accomplished artists and high-end paper production to create special items that feel thoughtful and planned. We talked with Jennifer, who calls Mountain Brook home, to learn more about the brand’s new name and what new designs to look for at dogwood-hill.com. What is coming soon from the brand? We have a lot of fun product lines on the horizon where we incorporate our art into other mediums, so be on the lookout! Take us back to 2015 and why you started a paper design business. The whole reason I started the company is because there was no middle ground between the mass-produced cards and super high-end, fully custom artistcommissioned work. I wanted something that looked like a high-end custom piece that had a price tag that was reasonable, and I wanted to turn it over quickly. Holly Hollon created the original branding, so I wanted her to do the second set for brand familiarity and it was important to me to keep the dog in the logo since Dixie Design Collective was named after our family Boston Terrier.

FOOD

A PREAMBLE OF FLAVOR BLUEROOT is as much about community connection as it is fueling the body and soul with taste and texture. BY CHRISTIANA ROUSSEL PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR MountainBrookMagazine.com 23

24 January/February 2021

I

“If you build it, they will come.” We’re all familiar with that famous line from the Kevin Costner film, Field of Dreams, referring to the baseball diamond he constructs, smack dab in the middle of his Iowa corn fields. Jennifer Ryan can readily identify with the emotions that drive a person to create something, where that thing they are seeking does not already exist. For Kevin Costner’s character, it was a place to play ball with his father. For Jennifer, The BLUEROOT Company was founded and exists to serve a community—nutritionally and beyond. The menu at BLUEROOT evolves seasonally but always features salads and bowls teeming with flavor and texture like the Moroccan Delight or Kale Caesar; soups and sides loaded with naturally derived probiotics; protein boxes for clean snacking; and sweet treats such as dark chocolate tahini brownies or cashew butter cookies. To be clear, this is not twigs-and-nuts

food–this is visually arresting, simply elegant cuisine that fuels body, mind and soul. A California native, Jennifer and her husband moved to the Magic City when he accepted a position with Andrews Sports Medicine. Birmingham’s legendary food scene was already on her radar, and the couple relished dining out at all the city’s culinary hot spots. And yet, Jennifer saw a void here in the availability of nutrient-dense, ethically and locally sourced, delicious grab-and-go food. So, she scratched out her version of that proverbial baseball field, in a pop-up sort of space at Pepper Place Market. Joining forces with James Beard award-winning chef Robin Bashinsky (see sidebar), she found connection with her new-found community here in Birmingham, gaining loyal fans and willing ambassadors for her concept all along the way. One of BLUEROOT’s mightiest coups came in late 2019 in the form of winning The Big Pitch, MountainBrookMagazine.com 25

Jennifer Ryan founded BLUEROOT after moving to Birmingham.

sponsored by REV Birmingham. No one could have guessed at the time that the funds garnered from that entrepreneurial competition, would be such a balm in an era of pandemic, in addition to serving as a launchpad for the next chapter of BLUEROOT. Jennifer had a desire to take her concept beyond the Pepper Place Market location and longed for greater exposure. Enter Patina shop owner Melanie Pounds, whom Jennifer credits with the vision of carving her 180-square-foot, double-Dutch-door storefront in Mountain Brook Village, out of a former storage closet, for an Outpost. But the collaboration did not stop there. Jennifer is effusive in extolling the benefits of living and working in a town of our size – meaning both Birmingham and more specifically, Mountain Brook. “You know, I’ve lived in New York City and I’m from Los Angeles, and those big cities just don’t have the same almost proverbial ‘hug’ for the entrepreneur,” she says. “And here in Birmingham, it is possible–the scale, the focus on entrepreneurialism and the size of the town makes it more accessible. All of those things helped us launch but then The Big Pitch really took us to the next level—by allowing us speak to a new group of people and tap into the community, broader than just the little bubbles we were in, which is really important.” Taking the idea of the storefront location to Mountain Brook Mayor Stewart Welch and to the Mountain Brook Chamber’s Suzan Doidge, Jennifer and her team were met with a very atypical government

WHO IS ROBIN BASHINSKY? Jennifer Ryan is one of those rare leaders who is selfish in accepting blame and generous in sharing the credit for work well-done. Spend just a few minutes with this woman, with a background in finance and technology, and she is quick to call out the chef whom she credits with so much of the execution of her vision, Robin Bashinsky. Robin has a background in fine dining and worked locally at both daniel george and Hot & Hot Fish Club. He also spent time developing and testing recipes at Cooking Light Magazine, before it shuttered in the Meredith Corporation acquisition. But beyond what his resume says, Jennifer is effusive in the other qualities he brings to BLUEROOT: “His fingerprints are all over everything that is beautiful in this business. When I come to him with crazy menu ideas, he might roll his eyes in secret, but he always comes back with something wild and creative. It is a combination of his creativity, his appreciation for the food and the sourcing and his general belief in promoting a healthier society, through food and mental health. I have not seen that trifecta in anyone else in this business. His sense of compassion, leadership and self-awareness are not traits I encounter a lot in this business. 30 January/February 2021

interview, Jennifer continued to serve walk-up clients until closing time and beyond. She loves that her adopted home is a place where “people who are walking by or riding their bikes will just stop and poke their heads in and say, ‘Hey, I’m not familiar with who you are or what you do. Tell me more!’ And then they would take three minutes to hear our story.” One of those customers, BLUEROOT regular and Mountain Brook resident Lanier Isom stopped by for her pick-up while we were chatting. What does she appreciate? “It is so easy to pop in and get what I want for dinner,” Lanier says. “Just amazing food, amazing people and I can’t get enough of it. Honestly, I would love for Jennifer to have a whole restaurant with her food!” Jennifer’s eyes are naturally bright, but they twinkle when Lanier mentions the restaurant notion, knowing that she has plans to have her own brick-and-mortar location in 2021 back at Pepper Place. “When we open our restaurant, we will have had the luxury that most restaurants don’t have of six to eight months of experimentation and training staff, working on the menu, developing operations to be faster and smarter,” she says. “This is our preamble.” BLUEROOT’s Mountain Brook Village Outpost pick-up window at 2822 Petticoat Lane is open Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Find their menu and more at bluerootco.com and follow updates @bluerootco on Instagram and Facebook.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Mauricio Papapietro bowl. Owner

PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

Brick & Tin owner Mauricio Papapietro has been thinking a lot about what life really looks like these days. He knows people are health-conscious. He knows they don’t necessarily have time to get something to eat for lunch each day. And now he knows more people than ever are working from home. Enter bowl.: a new concept he’s developed to cater to all of those realities with delivery service to Mountain Brook and beyond and pick-up from the former Brick & Tin location downtown. To learn more about it, we chatted with Mauricio just after bowl. launched its delivery service. How did the bowl. concept come about? I had started to conceptualize a different restaurant pre-COVID with a similar bowl concept. If you think of a bowl, people think of a salad, but they are a lot more than salad. I like to call them a composition of incredible ingredients—different textures and flavors that go together. I think there’s a larger movement where people care more about their food and where it came from. So we wanted to combine those two things. When COVID hit, we started doing delivery at Brick & Tin, and it was successful. We combined those things plus the added challenge to create bowls that travel well and sit well so they are healthy and conducive to a busy lifestyle.

beef bowl that is roasted medium rare and thinly sliced, and a salmon bowl. We do a 3 ½-ounce portion of meat whereas an entrée is about 6 ounces, and we build things around the meat. For the salmon for example, we add roasted beets we are getting from farmers that are really great and heirloom grains from Anson Mills in South Carolina. You can also build your own bowl, and we have about 20 different sides from homemade flat bread to jicama slaw.

What is the setup like with online ordering? All the ordering is through the website, so all the payments are done online. We have scheduled ordering, and you can order it days in advance and it will show Can you give us an overview of the up at your door at the time you need it. We are marketing toward how you can set it menu? We have eight bowls that are very vegan and forget it. For example if you know you and vegetarian friendly. There’s green bowl will be at UAB Monday, Wednesday and that is vegan and a tofu-based one that is Friday next week, you can plan to have it vegetarian, plus a sesame chicken bowl, a delivered and instead of picking up 32 January/February 2021

unhealthy fast food. How are you feeling now that the concept is up and running? We had been working on this for three months, and it has been a procurement process because we are so careful about where we are getting the ingredients and also how we are sourcing paper bowls. I was super pleased to see the creations come to life. It’s just really pretty food. Someone said all the bowls are like art, and it’s so satisfying to hear that. You are operating bowl. out of the former downtown Brick & Tin location. Do you think you will start to rethink the space after COVID? Our idea was to have an expansive delivery service from here so we can capture more markets than just downtown. All options are on the table going forward. We have this beautiful sidewalk where we might add seating, and I don’t know if we will open the inside.

WEDDINGS

JUST THE RIGHT FIT

Saying yes to the dress is no small moment for a bride, and that’s why designers and retailers are recognizing it’s important that she have the shopping experience she’s always dreamed of, no matter her size. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR Can I open this article with a confession? I have been wedding dress shopping with friends numerous times. We’ve looked through racks of lace and tulle and ooed and ahed each time the bride stepped out of the dressing room in a new look, anticipating how stunning she would look as she walks down the aisle to her groom. Saying yes to a wedding dress is no small moment in a woman’s life, and for most it’s the most notable shopping experience she will have and the biggest investment she’ll make in her lifetime. And yet, given my bias based on my dress size and size of the friends I have been with, never had I given thought to size availability at dress retailers. But then I talked to Christina Sloan, owner of the new Refined Bridal Boutique in downtown Birmingham. Here’s what I learned from her: At most wedding dress shops, the average sample size of dresses for brides to try on is a 12. Because wedding dresses tend to run smaller than everyday clothing, that 12 fits more like an 8. Add to that equation that the average woman in America is a size 16-18, and you quickly see that many brides aren’t able to try on sample dresses in traditional boutiques, that they aren’t able to have that dream-fulfilling shopping experience I have had with friends and their moms. Often these brides have seen no choice but to order their wedding dress online without being able to try it on. As a wedding planner for six years, that’s just what Christina was seeing with brides she worked with, and why 34 January/February 2021

she wanted to open a shop with a different set of sample sizes. “I felt like brides shouldn’t have to compromise their experience,” she says. She recognizes that for wedding dress shops it’s hard to carry a standard selection of sizes and also carry a great selection of curvy or plus sizes, so her shop carries exclusively size 14 or above, with sample sizes starting at 16 and going up to size 40. It’s one of few shops in the Southeast with these offerings and the only one in Alabama. Christina also notes that the dress selection is just as important. “So often plus size dresses are not stylish or trendy,” she says. “They are old fashioned. I wanted to bring designer dresses in the curvy and plus size realm.” In fact, Christina has consulted with several wedding

36 January/February 2021

dress designers to develop a curvy line as part of their collections. “Almost any dress can be modified to plus-sized,” she says. “Adding a bit of boning and shape wear inside the dress and making sure there is added structure and support in there are key. You can still have the plunging V-necks but have support in the bust cups.” It’s also important to see these designs on size-inclusive models on the runways and print and social media too, Christina notes. “I think every bride wants to be able to see herself, and it’s so hard to do that when we are looking at (thin) models,” she says. “We need to have representation of what we really look like as women.” Photographer Mary Fehr, who took the photos in this article and modeled in some of them, speaks to the importance of size inclusion from her side of the wedding industry too. “People put MountainBrookMagazine.com 37

their best work out there, and a lot of times that means they are showing off thin white people,” Mary says. “When you are only showing that in your portfolio, then diverse bodies and people aren’t seeing themselves represented. It’s important because that’s how people see themselves.” Christina is hopeful that the wedding dress industry is heading in good directions in this regard as she is seeing more designers wanting to add plus sizes to their collections and hopes to see their size charts go up to 30-32 or above to accommodate the curves of women in designs that are still stylish. And that, in turn, will mean that brides don’t have to settle for less than the dress experience of their dreams. “Size inclusivity is coming a long way in fashion, and it’s making its way into bridal,” Christina says. “I’m excited to see where it goes.”

SHE SAID YES Proposal Stories You Shared With Us

I proposed in front of the big outside stairs leading up to the Grand Bohemian bar/ restaurant after dinner at Hot & Hot Fish Club. All of our friends and family were upstairs waiting on us and actually looking down at us which I didn’t anticipate! And to add to the story, I had her family from Winter Park, Florida, come in town that Friday for the “Alabama football game” the next day in Tuscaloosa.

During a run on the Golden Gate Bridge, we paused in the middle to look. My now-husband handed his unsuspecting daughter his phone and said, “Hey take a pic of this” as he got down on one knee. It was the shock of my life to the point I fell as he was trying to put the ring on. Luckily he got it on my finger! -Sally Williams

-John Hughston Hutchinson

My fiancé flew to Colorado on the next flight after mine had left and surprised me while I was on a hike with my friends in the Rocky Mountains. I met him on a plane on my way out there (I used to live out there), so it was super special!

My husband proposed to me at Mountain Brook Creamery, where we had our first date! We’re both huge fans! -Meredith Townsend

-Caroline Wilensky

He told me we were going to his step cousin’s wedding in Atlanta. In the lobby, he went back up to the room to grab his watch and asked me to check in with the front desk to see if his parents had left us a note about where to meet them. Of course, the front desk had a note for me: “So by now, you’ve probably figured out that there is no wedding.” Umm, no, I hadn’t. The note sent me back to the hotel room where he was waiting with a much smaller little box just for me.

Christmas evening, he went in for a kiss under my mistletoe kissing ball and started messing with it. I said, “If you pull a piece off of that, I will totally murder you!” So he got down on one knee. He had hidden the ring in the kissing ball. (It’s one from Smith & Hawken, so a true treasure....one we will keep forever.) -Alice Harding

Fall Florals With autumn comes a luscious color palette for weddings, so it’s no surprise florists wanted to showcase it in these two styled shoots: one indoors and one outdoors.

Indoors

The cozy dinner party setting contrasted the saturated florals with the simplicity of the bride’s ivory gowns and soft tablescape tones, bringing to life the organic beauty and inviting romance of a fall wedding.

The Wedding Dress: This is wild—I (Elizabeth) found my wedding dress when I was shopping for bridesmaid dresses at Bella Bridesmaids. I worked with the dearest alterations sister team, Charlsie Hand and her sister Linda, to create a longer train on the dress as well as the sheer jacket I wore for the ceremony and first part of the reception. My vision for that was a wide neck with puff sleeves and a mix of whimsical yet traditional pattern of lace. Favorite Moments: I will never forget the moment of Will and I standing

at the altar preparing to take our vows, and then the joy of looking out to see all of the people present to witness. I also loved spending the morning getting ready with my friends. Some dear family friends generously allowed us to get ready in their home, so we had stunning space and cozy fires for the winter day to all spend time together. And the reception, I can’t imagine an event that will ever top it. I had my dearest people, a fun crowd, a fun band and all the dancing—I was on Cloud 9! Favorite Details: I have danced

WEDDINGS since I could walk, so the band was a high priority for me. Overall, we wanted a fun environment where people could chose to be in the middle of all the action and music or tucked away by a cozy fire to catch up with other guests. So the layout of the reception was very intentional to create the space for this kind of experience. I also loved working with my friend Riley to get the paper suite just right. Two other details I loved were my shoes and the earrings I wore for the reception. I stayed mostly traditional in design, but I wanted a few nods to trend and 2020.

The Proposal: Tyler proposed in Florence, Italy, while he and I (Mallie) were both studying abroad for the semester. My family was visiting, and his parents also flew in as a surprise. The Dress: My wedding gown was originally worn on June 15, 1951, by Katherine Springs Milnor, matron of honor to my paternal grandmother, Ellen Pratt Wilkerson Given, who also married in the dress. My mother continued the dress tradition for her wedding, and my sister Caroline was the most recent bride to wear it. The gown was purchased in

1951 at Jay Thorpe’s in New York City and was fashioned from silk satin made in Como, Italy. The inside lining at the hem of the wedding dress is embroidered with blue thread that showcases the names of each bride who has worn the dress, along with their wedding dates. Favorite Moments: I grew up as a camper at Greystone for 10 summers and worked on summer staff for five summers. Camp Greystone is our little slice of heaven, and having everyone we love celebrating with us in such a meaningful place was something so

amazing it is hard to capture the adequate words. Favorite Details: Tyler’s mother was seated as “Ave Maria” played, which was also sung in my mother and father’s wedding. My mother was honored as “Edelweiss” was played. The bridal march, “Wedding Processional,” from The Sound of Music, is the song that my parents’ and my sister’s wedding party walked down the aisle to. We also have a tradition in our family of toasting our marriage with a cup engraved with our initials and wedding date.

How We Met: I (Wesley) was freelancing at a local magazine in Birmingham when I received notice that a new intern would be joining us and that I would need to vacate my cubicle to make room for him/her. A few days later when I was introduced to said intern, let’s just say that my attitude shifted. I immediately sent a message to one of my fellow employees that finally, a really cute guy had entered our largely femaledominated office. You guessed it, he’s the groom! It’s cheesy to say, but Peyton and I can also confirm that we

both “knew” before we even went on our first date. Favorite Details: As the pandemic became a more prevalent threat, we decided to cut the guest list drastically. Although it was a very difficult task, we ended up getting the intimate wedding of our dreams after all! It opened up our budget to “spoil” our guests with an oyster bar, late night snacks a la Chef Hastings and homemade limoncello for the road. I wanted to draw inspiration from the groom’s Italian roots to create a romantic setting overflowing with

WEDDINGS greenery and candlelight. We landed on our favorite restaurant, OvenBird, as our reception venue and chose Tim Tyler as our musician. My mother was responsible for finding our florist, Mary Donald, who made all of my over-the-top Pinterest dreams come to life. One of my bridesmaids, who is a graphic designer, was so kind to design a custom wedding monogram for us, which we swiftly placed on every item imaginable (cake, koozies, menus, you name it!), and I took my hand at designing most of the paper and design elements throughout the weekend.

How We Met: Sam and I (Amanda) met in Atlanta through mutual friends following the wedding of a close friend of mine. Later that week once we were back in Birmingham Sam called to ask me on a date. I was so glad he called but truthfully didn’t think he would as I kind of made fun of his shoe selection the previous weekend when we met. It turned out he liked my sense of humor! The Proposal: When we returned to the house one Saturday afternoon, Sam rang the doorbell, and when he opened the door, his dog Parker was right there

waiting for us and had a big bow around his neck with a sign saying, “Will You Marry Us?” Favorite Moment: My favorite moment of the day was seeing Sam at the altar when they opened the church doors. We chose not to do a first look, and I am so glad! This was Sam’s idea and took some convincing, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. All the excitement and anticipation of waiting to see him at the church was so special. Favorite Details: Our reception decor and seated dinner. I wanted the

evening to feel like a “night in the garden.” Mariee Ami and Buffy Hargett did the best job helping to bring my vision to life. The custom umbrellas, large maple tree in the center of the room, lattice wall behind the cake, hanging basket lanterns and flowers everywhere made it a night we’ll never forget! Due to the pandemic, we had to cut our guest list considerably. It was hard making the decision to only include our wedding party and family, but with the way the East Room was decorated it didn’t feel empty at all, despite having less than 70 people in attendance.

The Proposal: Being a type-A accountant, I (Caroline) am a planner by nature. In February 2019, I booked a weekend trip to Sea Island for that coming October to celebrate my birthday. Knowing that the only way to surprise me with a proposal was to have it occur during something I planned, Danny decided to propose during the trip. On Friday night, we went to what I thought was my birthday dinner at Colt & Alison steakhouse. When we sat down at our table, the waiter brought us our menus, and a note fell out of mine. When I finished reading my

letter, I looked to my right, and Danny was down on his knee with a ring. I said yes and the restaurant erupted in applause! Favorite Moment: Being a COVID bride, I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of the guest turnout. Yes, people RSVP-ed that they were attending, but in these uncertain times when plans change daily, I wasn’t expecting a large turnout. We were only able to have family and wedding party at the church, and before being announced at the reception, I remember asking my wedding planner how the turnout was so I could set

WEDDINGS expectations before walking in the ballroom. She told me I’d be pleasantly surprised, but I still didn’t believe her. As we walked in the ballroom, my jaw hit the floor. Danny and I will be forever grateful for everyone who attended. To make everything even better, no one contracted COVID at the wedding. What You Are Doing Now: On the first day of our honeymoon, as we were in route to our hotel in Cabo, we both received offer letters from PwC offering us a two-year rotation in the PwC London office. We are moving to London and are planning to live near Hyde Park.

How We Met: I (Landon) was living in Rosemary Beach and working for a residential architecture firm while also teaching yoga in my free time. Thomas was in town for the Seaside Half Marathon. He had always wanted to try a yoga class and booked a private lesson with me. The rest is history. The Proposal: I had always wanted to go skydiving, and one Saturday, Thomas surprised me with plans to go skydiving the very next day. Less than 24 hours later, we found ourselves 14,000 feet in the air and about to jump

out of an airplane. Little did I know, there was a 25-foot banner waiting for me at the landing zone that read, “WILL YOU MARRY ME? Favorite Details: Thomas and I definitely did not have a traditional wedding. We chose an intimate Jewish ceremony (and wrote our own vows) with our closest family and a few friends with a private dinner afterwards. Later in the night, we were greeted by the rest of our family and friends for the reception. Almost a year after Thomas and I started dating, my sister Erin, who

The Proposal: Philip had rented a house on the beach back in August 2019. After he and I (Katie) arrived and unloaded everything, he wanted to go sit out on the porch. He had been very anxious all day, so I somewhat knew what was about to happen. This is when he then got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Soon after he kept telling me we needed to shower and get dressed because we had dinner reservations. After getting dressed for dinner, we decided to take a walk on the beach to enjoy the moment. When we

turned around to come back to the house, both of our families and all of our friends ran out on the beach to surprise us. We then had a big engagement party that night. It was such a special weekend that I will remember forever. The Wedding Dress: Oh the wedding dress! I saw it on Ivory & White’s Instagram and just knew I had to try it on. It was absolutely perfect. I am typically a very indecisive person, so my mom and sisters were skeptical that I had made my decision so quickly. Every time I would put on another

Favorite Moment: Due to COVID-19, neither Robert’s nor my (Elizabeth’s) grandmothers were able to attend our wedding or reception. Our planner and floral designer had the idea to drive me to my grandmother’s house so that she could see me in my wedding dress and we could get pictures together. My heirloom wedding veil was my mother’s, which my grandmother bought in Brussels over 40 years ago. It was especially meaningful to be able to see her in person on my wedding day, and to have

three generations together. Favorite Details: Our wedding was initially planned to be quite large, but the pandemic necessitated downsizing to a 25-person ceremony and 50-person seated dinner reception. At the ceremony, I had zero nerves because my sights were fully focused on walking straight down the aisle to Robert. Our friends and extended family were able to watch the ceremony via live-stream, and we were able to reconfigure the original reception design plan. With a Southern garden theme, the room was

How We Met: Mitchell and I (Katelyn) met at Otey’s in Crestline Village. I was with girlfriends talking about how hard it is to meet a good guy. Then in walks Mitchell, I looked at him and it was like I had known him all my life. I’ll never forget his big smile he had. He said he could hear my laugh from across the room. He got my number and called me the very next morning to set up a date. The Wedding Dress: It had a big bow on the back, something I have always wanted, and pockets of course. It was really special to me that she was there, and my dad had all the right suggestions for choosing the perfect veil. My dad was remarkable throughout the wedding planning. Favorite Moment: I loved seeing Mitchell’s reaction when he first saw me. It was so sweet, and I will always remember it! I also loved walking

WEDDINGS downstairs from getting ready at Mountain Brook Club and seeing my party come to life with the flowers, decorations and a beautiful white stage. Favorite Details: I absolutely loved my wedding paper suite; it had my family crest at the top with hand calligraphy by Marsha Lassiter. I will always love the fact that our first dance was to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder – Mitchell and I love to dance! Also, the flowers were beautiful and exactly what I wanted; I incorporated pheasant and turkey feathers in my flowers to include Mitchell’s love for hunting.

WEDDINGS

78 January/February 2021

How We Met: Tyler and I (Mary Palmer) met through a mutual friend in Montgomery. I was finishing an internship at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, and he was passing through the Maxwell Air Force Base on a training exercise. Tyler is a helicopter pilot for the Marine Corps, but when I asked what he did for a living, he told me that he was a “door gunner for a submarine.” I nervously gushed about submarines for a solid five minutes until he took pity on me and told me that a “door

gunner to a submarine” isn’t a real job. He was much nicer to me for the rest of the night, and we stayed in touch from that initial meeting onward. We still laugh about our first conversation to this day! The Proposal: Tyler proposed the morning of the 22nd of December 2018, and we decided to set a long engagement with plenty of time to plan the wedding around our busy schedules. We actually got married in the same church that my mother and father were married in, and our family

WEDDINGS members went above the call of duty to make the day special for Tyler and me. Everyone participated in some small way all the way down to my littlest cousin. What We Are Doing Now: Tyler and I currently live in Pensacola, Florida, where Tyler is stationed. We have an adorable English bulldog named Doodle and two silly cats named Lucy and Gouda. We love the sunshine and easy access to the beach while staying close to our family in Birmingham. We plan to take our honeymoon trip to Ireland once travel overseas becomes easier.
