Windwood Wedding

Erin Rubin and Ken West postponed their wedding from May 3 to July 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and held a ceremony and reception with just family and their wedding party at Windwood Equestrian. Photo by Rob and Wynter Design by Connor Martin-Lively

2020 started off with a bang on Jan. 18 as I watched my brother’s bride process up to him at the altar of the Episcopal church where she’d grown up in Richmond, Virginia. A few hours later, the two of them— not usually ones for the spotlight—were up on the stage at their reception singing along to my brother’s favorite Tom Petty songs as the band rocked out behind them. In front of them danced a crowd clad in colorful hats, boas, sunglasses and balloons that my cousins and I had all passed out to pump up the party ala a family tradition that began when one cousin married a Peruvian and introduced us to the Latin American “hora loca” (“crazy hour”). Two months later, in March, the New York Times posted a set of reader-submitted videos of “powerful scenes from crowded places that feel almost unthinkable now.” Though I didn’t send one in, that dance floor would have been mine. Looking back at pictures, it’s so apparent that we had no concept of social distance in our minds and no idea of what was to come. I didn’t know that by spring, I’d attend my cousin’s wedding ceremony on Zoom, putting on the dress I’d planned to wear (the first time I’d changed out of stretchy pants in who knows how long), pouring a glass of wine and opening my computer screen. I didn’t know that by summer bridesmaid duty would look like stashing my floor-length dress in the back of my closet for 2021. Instead I dropped off surprise gifts at the bride’s doorstep on wedding week and showed up to her parents’ house on wedding eve with a four-layer cookie cake I’d made and chatted on the back porch with their immediately family that made up the whole of the wedding guests, all of us in T-shirts and shorts. To the brides and grooms of pandemic-era 2020, your resilience astounds me. And while this wedding issue may, at first glance, look similar to ones we’ve published in years past, a closer look reveals its words and images are distinct to the pandemic year we’ll never forget. Ceremonies and receptions moved to family farms and guest lists were cut. And yet, as the couples in this issue recount, after all the stress of changed plans, they were full of intimate, meaningful moments as they began their married lives together. Be sure to read all their accounts in the pages to come in this issue, along with our coverage of inclusion in the wedding dress industry, hair styles on trend, reader-submitted engagement stories and more wedding prettiness that will hopefully brighten cold winter days for you. Wishing you a warm and healthy start to 2021,

“ ” THE QUESTION

What has 2020 taught you?

Slow down and take time with your loved ones because there might not be a tomorrow.

It taught me that we can do things that previously seemed impossible because we’re stronger than we think we are!

Mask are not just for Halloween, toilet paper is a bartering tool, family is what matters most, going to church can mean making sure the iPad is charged, and to expect the unexpected.

That past priorities may not have been priority at all!

To be very thankful of what we have and the people in our lives! Take nothing for granted!

To slow down and reevaluate the true meaning of life and family. The material things don’t matter. We are all one day away from losing everything. Make every minute count!

CRAVING CANDLES

You can now find these Crave Candles’ luxury scents all over North America. Here’s the story of how they got there. BY LINDSAY BARNETT PHOTOS BY KATHRYN BELL ShelbyLiving.com

W

When Lori Newell started making candles, she wanted the faces of those who burned them to light up, and she wanted them to ask for more of their fragrance. And so came their name, Crave Candle Company. Today you can find them all over the world, but their lives start right here in Helena. As a graduate of Auburn University with a major in Small Business Management, Lori describes herself as an entrepreneur at heart. She now has over 30 years of business development behind her. “I’ve created, driven and marketed brands that no one knew anything about,” she says. “I’ve done it so

many times for other people, and I finally decided, ‘Why not do it for myself?’” So five years ago, Crave Candle Company began at Lori’s kitchen sink. “I wanted to create a product and brand and get it across the country. As I looked at the market, I knew there was room for another luxury brand soy candle,” she continues. “I’ve always loved candles in my own home. It’s so warm and inviting having a great smelling candle. Candles have been sold for hundreds of years of course, but I felt like I could improve upon them.” Her goal was to marry a luxury candle experience

with beautiful home décor quality containers. To do so, she spent nine months researching and designing just the right candle. “You can have a pretty container, but if the scent isn’t good, no one is going to buy it,” she says. “Once I got my proprietary candle formula right with the right blends of fragrances, waxes and essential oils, I

on to creating beautiful containers that would double as home décor in any room using mason jars, mini dough bowls and black matte designs. “We ended up with a great candle that burns amazing and smells really nice in a container that enhances the room and just looks beautiful.” The candles come in a wide variety of scents, but the most popular is Midnight Blue Citrus. “People call and ask for it and all my stores have to carry it to meet the demand,” Lori says. “That was the effect we really wanted—that people would love our fragrances so much they would hunt it down (and) they’d truly crave it!” When the pandemic began to touch businesses and homes in 2020, the company started making hand sanitizer as well. The product features the same essential oil and fragrance blends as the candles, plus alcohol to sanitize and glycerol to soften. This combination ensures that not only are the users’ hands free from germs, but also that they smell fragrant. Going into 2021, you’ll be able to find their hand sanitizer product in every Cracker Barrel in the country. Keep your eye out for all three sanitizer fragrances—Lavender Eucalyptus, Tobacco Spice and of course Midnight Blue Citrus—in the stores, plus the unscented version of the product available locally. Also speaking to pandemic times is a fragrance mist that can be used as a mask spray. Lori says day spas specifically requested this product, and she designed the one-ounce bottle with four ShelbyLiving.com

essential oils. Peppermint acts as a cooling agent, and eucalyptus opens up your airway so you don’t feel like you’re getting all stuffy. “You can actually almost enjoy wearing your mask!” Lori says of its function. The brand can now found in stores throughout Alabama and in 900 locations nationwide: luxury day spas, ladies’ boutiques, gift stores, florists and a number of other mom and pop shops. Still, Lori has bigger dreams to take them international, a goal she reached in November when she landed a contract with Saks Fifth Avenue. Private labeled Crave Candles will be available in 90 Saks stores nationwide, in 18 stores in Canada and on their website. “Although they’re private label candles, the warning label still says it’s made by Crave Candle Company in Helena, Alabama!” Lori boasts. Not only that, but Crave Candles were delivered to a high-end décor store in the Cayman Islands in December too. They found the candles on Instagram and joined as a wholesale account on the Crave Candles Company website so they could offer these products to their customers. And Lori takes particular pride in the reality that candle fans from a Caribbean climate up to Canadian cold this winter will be craving more of a product that is made in Helena, Alabama.

READ THIS BOOK

Short Story Collections by Women Writers Recommendations from

Ashley Wurzbacher Assistant Professor of English University of Montevallo

As a writer and teacher of fiction, I spend a lot of time introducing people to the joys of short stories. Succinct, satisfying, and tragically under-read, their brevity makes them well suited to our short attention spans and busy lives. Over the course of a whole book/collection, they can invite us to empathize with a broad and varied cast of unique characters. This list, which includes my own book, is designed to introduce you to the pleasures of the short story form and to some of its notable women writers.

The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose

By Alice Munro I love Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro’s work for its nuanced and humane depictions of flawed women and rural settings. The Beggar Maid is especially satisfying and cohesive. Its ten stories are closely linked, offering the large scope and opportunity for long-haul investment in a core set of characters that we typically associate with novels. They revolve around a central character, Rose, who grows up poor in rural Ontario and whose fraught relationship with her stepmother, Flo, shapes her life in unexpected ways.

Look How Happy I’m Making You

By Polly Rosenwaike I recommend this book to mothers—new, old and prospective—in particular, but any woman reader will likely be refreshed by its raw, honest depictions of women’s reproductive lives and choices in all their complexity. Rosenwaike’s stories explore pregnancy, new parenthood, miscarriage, abortion, infertility and more. I’ll defer to the writer Anthony Doerr, who wrote of this collection, “Among the thousands of books for prospective and new parents, I doubt any will make you feel more understood and less alone than this one.”

Self-Help

By Lorrie Moore First published in 1985, this collection remains a classic. Moore is a crowd pleaser for her quirky, often dorky humor (puns abound) and playful narration. Several of the stories in Self-Help are written in the second person, with a protagonist identified as “you.” This rare and challenging choice of perspective puts the reader directly into the protagonist’s shoes, demanding that they empathize with characters with whom they might not otherwise identify. This book has the endorsement of my Montevallo students, who read it in class and loved it.

Refund

By Karen Bender Karen Bender doesn’t shy away from tough subject matter or social commentary—this book contains a shooting, for instance, and a story about the 9/11 terrorist attacks—but she handles them with a light touch and plenty of nuance and compassion. Bender excels at writing humorous yet tender stories that feel quintessentially American and that depict family life in all its difficulty and absurdity. I particularly enjoy the way she writes children, celebrating their wonderful weirdness.

Happy Like This

By Ashley Wurzbacher My stories explore intimate, sometimes unusual relationships between girls and women: friends with secrets, sisters growing apart, mermaids with fluid identities, scholars and scientists longing for connection. My characters struggle to live their best lives, often comparing themselves to others and making a mess along the way. In the words of my friend and fellow author Kristen Iskandrian, co-owner of local indie bookstore Thank You Books, “Happy Like This will make a short story believer out of anyone who thinks they don’t like short stories.”

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

The Shelby County Arts Council is looking for student art entries and preparing for its annual Adult Juried Art Show. BY LINDSAY DYESS PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED The new year brings new opportunities to the Shelby County Arts Council! This year we look forward to opportunities for artists and bringing new music to the Black Box Theater. Call for art! Starting Monday, January 4, 2021, entry is open for the Statewide High School Juried Art Show. Alabama students in grades 10th-12th are encouraged to enter this free art competition. Entry categories include painting, drawing, mixed media, 3D design and photography. Students can enter a maximum of two artworks from any listed category. Each year the SCAC hosts this gallery exhibit to give high school students the chance to experience a higher-level art competition at no cost to the students or schools. Students will go through an initial round of judging and either be accepted or rejected for the final gallery exhibit. Past exhibits have seen up to 400 works of art entered, with only about a quarter of those making it to the final exhibit. There will be cash prizes for the best of each category and an overall best of show prize. This show’s gallery title sponsor is the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Caring Foundation. Students in grades 10-12 in public, private or homeschool are encouraged to submit work. The deadline for entry is February 18, 2021. COOKIE ART

Instead of laptops and Zoomfriendly backgrounds, Rebecca Pilgreen prefers her home office to be overflowing with color. And sugar. Lots of sugar. Around the same time businesses began boarding up and schools closed their doors in the spring of 2020, Rebecca began revving up her homegrown business, Sugar Bakings, baking and decorating cookies for local businesses, bachelorette parties, birthdays, baby showers and anything else that could use a custom confection. “It all kind of started while scrolling social media in 2019,” Rebecca says. “I kept seeing these cookie videos and would think, ‘I could do that.’” Rebecca decided to give her growing interest some proper schooling, so she attended a cookies class specifically for aspiring cookies artists in Helena. “Then I went home and tried to do it myself and it was, well, terrible,” Rebecca says with a laugh. Dogged in nature, however, the budding baker decided to keep the apron on. After several months of perfecting her recipe and honing her technique from her kitchen

TIPS TO DECORATE YOUR OWN COOKIES To get social media-worthy cookies, you don’t need to become a professional. Rebecca gave us some quick and easy tips in her own words for creating beautiful cookies worth sharing with loved ones. You don’t need anything fancy to decorate cookies at home. From the store or your pantry, grab a tube of icing, two-gallon ziploc bags, a toothpick, food coloring and cookies to decorate. Once you have all your supplies, add food coloring of your choice to the icing. You’ll want two types of the icing. uOutline Icing: A thicker icing to outline the cookie first.

DYK? did you know? Our technicians perform a fourteen-point check of every new wastewater pump installation, to help make sure we get it right the first time.

uFlood Icing: Icing to decorate the cookie. You can add a little bit of water to the icing to give it a smooth consistency. Fill the outline and flood icings into separate ziploc bags. For your outline icing, cut a small whole in the corner of the bag and trace around the edge of the cookie. Then, take your flood icing and cut a medium hole and decorate the middle of the cookie. Use your toothpick to smooth out the icing on the cookies. Top with sprinkles and enjoy your treat!

in Brook Highland off Highway 280, Rebecca soon began growing a loyal following of friends and family who couldn’t get enough of her carefully-crafted cookies. And a business was born. “For Easter, I did cookie kits and that really took off,” Rebecca says. “Between that and Mother’s Day, those were the pivotal points that I realized this could be something.” Since last spring, Rebecca has perfected her process. From start to finish, it takes her about four days to complete a “project.” That includes baking the cookies, letting them cool, decorating the cookies and individually wrapping each sweet treat. “There’s a lot of detail that goes into it and I think people love seeing something that’s personal to them on a cookie,” Rebecca says. “Even if it’s just a logo or a hashtag for a bachelorette party or some sort of inside joke. It’s fun to put that on a cookie.” A quick scroll through @sugarbakings’ social media feed proves Rebecca’s sentiment. She’s made a cookie for almost everything. Halloween cookies, graduation cookies, wedding cookies, cookies thanking first responders—you name it, she’s ShelbyLiving.com

baked and decorated it. The cookie artist jokes that since launching Sugar Bakings, her home has turned into its own little storefront. She, her husband and their dog have learned to get used to a constant stream of confections. “It’s absolutely taken over,” Rebecca says with a laugh. “Our dining room table is just mainly a cookie table now.” But that’s okay with Rebecca. While she admits that Sugar Bakings is certainly a labor of love, she’s also quick to point out that it offers her a creative outlet that she wouldn’t have otherwise. “I’ve always kind of been creative, and it’s usually come through in writing,” she says. “The actual artistic part—I’ve never been bad at it—but it’s not something I ever felt really confident in. But it’s been so good for writing, too. When you have a creative space where you can do something else, the

mind kind of flows. Writing has been a little bit easier since I started this because there’s been a little bit more creativity going on.” She also says she’s learned the importance of selfbelief. “I think that especially on the creative side, there’s always someone more creative and it’s easy to compare yourself to someone else’s journey,” she says. “I think it’s been good for me to realize that there’s space for everyone. I’ve learned to push past self-comparison and just keep trying.” With plans to expand and possibly rent a commercial space in 2021, Sugar Bakings is well on its way to becoming something bigger (and sweeter) than Rebecca ever imagined. And while she’s not ready to confirm any definite plans, Rebecca says she aims to continue baking as much as possible. “It’s been a crazy journey, and I’m still growing,” she says. “But it’s been a lot of fun.” ShelbyLiving.com

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Helena Nutrition Co-Owner PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Shake and tea shops with the “nutrition” in their name are popping up around Shelby County, including one right behind Helena Health Club on County Road 52. “Our vision was to bring healthy delicious options to Helena and to provide a comfortable atmosphere for people to hang out or have small business meetings,” Helena Nutrition Co-Owner TJ Cunningham told us. We chatted with him to learn more about the concept and its sister location in Alabaster. You can follow them @helena.nutrition on Instagram or @helenanutrition on Facebook. How did you get involved with this concept? I was unhappy at my old job and found out about a nutrition club in Alabaster and started planning a second location with its owner. JUST THE RIGHT FIT Saying yes to the dress is no small moment for a bride, and that’s why designers and retailers are recognizing it’s important that she have the shopping experience she’s always dreamed of, no matter her size. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR Can I open this article with a confession? I have been wedding dress shopping with friends numerous times. We’ve looked through racks of lace and tulle and ooed and ahed each time the bride stepped out of the dressing room in a new look, anticipating how stunning she would look as she walks down the aisle to her groom. Saying yes to a wedding dress is no small moment in a woman’s life, and for most it’s the most notable shopping experience she will have and the biggest investment she’ll make in her lifetime. And yet, given my bias based on my dress size and size of the friends I have been with, never had I given thought to size availability at dress retailers. But then I talked to Christina Sloan, owner of the new Refined Bridal Boutique in downtown Birmingham. Here’s what I learned from her: At most wedding dress shops, the average sample size of dresses for brides to try on is a 12. Because wedding dresses tend to run smaller than everyday clothing, that 12 fits more like an 8. Add to that equation that the average woman in America is a size 16-18, and you quickly see that many brides aren’t able to try on sample dresses in traditional boutiques, that they aren’t able to have that dream-fulfilling shopping experience I have had with friends and their moms. Often these brides have seen no choice but to order their wedding dress online without being able to try it on. As a wedding planner for six years, that’s just what Christina was seeing with brides she worked with, and why 32 January/February 2021

she wanted to open a shop with a different set of sample sizes. “I felt like brides shouldn’t have to compromise their experience,” she says. She recognizes that for wedding dress shops it’s hard to carry a standard selection of sizes and also carry a great selection of curvy or plus sizes, so her shop carries exclusively size 14 or above, with sample sizes starting at 16 and going up to size 40. It’s one of few shops in the Southeast with these offerings and the only one in Alabama. Christina also notes that the dress selection is just as important. “So often plus size dresses are not stylish or trendy,” she says. “They are old fashioned. I wanted to bring designer dresses in the curvy and plus size realm.” In fact, Christina has consulted with several wedding

34 January/February 2021

dress designers to develop a curvy line as part of their collections. “Almost any dress can be modified to plus-sized,” she says. “Adding a bit of boning and shape wear inside the dress and making sure there is added structure and support in there are key. You can still have the plunging V-necks but have support in the bust cups.” It’s also important to see these designs on size-inclusive models on the runways and print and social media too, Christina notes. “I think every bride wants to be able to see herself, and it’s so hard to do that when we are looking at (thin) models,” she says. “We need to have representation of what we really look like as women.” Photographer Mary Fehr, who took the photos in this article and modeled in some of them, speaks to the importance of size inclusion from her side of the wedding industry too. “People put ShelbyLiving.com

their best work out there, and a lot of times that means they are showing off thin white people,” Mary says. “When you are only showing that in your portfolio, then diverse bodies and people aren’t seeing themselves represented. It’s important because that’s how people see themselves.” Christina is hopeful that the wedding dress industry is heading in good directions in this regard as she is seeing more designers wanting to add plus sizes to their collections and hopes to see their size charts go up to 30-32 or above to accommodate the curves of women in designs that are still stylish. And that, in turn, will mean that brides don’t have to settle for less than the dress experience of their dreams. “Size inclusivity is coming a long way in fashion, and it’s making its way into bridal,” Christina says. “I’m excited to see where it goes.”

SHE SAID YES Proposal Stories You Shared With Us

I proposed to my wife on the steps of her first college dorm at the University of Montevallo where she lived when we met our freshman year. I led her on a blindfolded drive for about half an hour, and we walked up to the dorm where our families were waiting and our college choir that we were in together was standing on the steps. I proposed, she said yes, then she turned around and the choir sang our favorite song that we had sung together in choir.

We woke up at 5:00 on November 7, 2019 and raced the sunrise to the top of the Blue Ridge Parkway. He waited until exactly 6:58 a.m. to propose (just as the sun rose over the horizon) and the pictures he took were incredible (he’s a hobby nature photographer, so he had his camera there as an “excuse” for us to go see the sunrise). He proposed with his grandmother’s diamond (in a new setting) on his grandmother’s birthday, too.

- Daniel Yates

- Lauren Ford

He and his best friend designed an entire video game. He asked me to play it, I thought it was just something he and his friend were doing for fun. Turns out the instructions in the game lead to his proposal!

My husband, Craft Maier, proposed from the Cardiovascular Intensive Care unit at Shelby Medical Center. He planned to propose to me on a Sunday, but on that Friday night he suffered a massive heart attack, known as the widow maker. The fact that he’s alive today is a testament to the wonderful doctors at Shelby Hospital, and the quick actions of the EMT professionals. He coded five times on the way to the hospital.

- Susannah Ritchey

- Jennifer Schoel Maier

I was told I was going to “family pictures,” and when I got there, Adam was standing on the pier with “MARRY ME” spelled out in big white letters that lit up. He also had a picture of us hanging up with mini flower vases hanging from the top of the pier. He planned an engagement party after with all of my family and friends—they were all in the backyard when we walked back there.

He rented out a rink at the Pelham Civic Complex and took me ice skating, our favorite date night activity. Then all of our family and friends showed up and skated with us. After a little while, he got down on one knee on the ice and proposed. It was magical! - Kelly Marley Coleman

Fall Florals With autumn comes a luscious color palette for weddings, so it’s no surprise florists wanted to showcase it in these two styled shoots: one indoors and one outdoors.

Indoors

PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR Warm, moody lighting and a rich floral palette complemented an urban brick backdrop for this modern ode to autumn. The cozy dinner party setting contrasted the saturated florals with the simplicity of the bride’s ivory gowns and soft tablescape tones, bringing to life the organic beauty and inviting romance of a fall wedding.

The Proposal: My now bridesmaids and I (Asia) were having a birthday celebration for one of our sweet friends that I planned. Little did I know that my friends had let me plan this whole day simply as a distraction for what was really in store. Nick was secretly planning with them and our families to propose. When we arrived at Old Baker Farm to take pictures with my friends, Nick had set up the most romantic proposal with a photographer and videographer there to capture the entire thing. He is truly the most

thoughtful man. The Dress: I actually custom put together my dress and veil. I went into Bella’s Bridal in Hoover looking for something fun and different but still elegant and fell in love with the fitted version of my dress. I saw an over skirt to a different dress and decided to put it on top of my own. I wore the over skirt and dress down the aisle and then removed the skirt to have a fitted option for the reception. It was the perfect unique design that was my own!

Favorite Details: My favorite details were definitely my jewelry pieces and bouquet! My vintage gold ring was my great-grandmothers that has been passed down for generations. and my engagement ring was given to me by my mother-inlaw, which was very special to my groom. The Proposal: At our sibling Christmas dinner last year, Ken’s brother, Brian, flew in from California for the holidays, and all my (Erin’s) siblings were there. We were the last people in the restaurant, and Ken got down on one knee and proposed. Everyone was surprised! We made a toast, and it couldn’t have been any more special. Favorite Moment: Due to COVID-19, we decided to postpone our May 3 wedding to July 12. In addition to changing the date, we made the tough

decision days prior to decrease our 300+ guest list down to just family and wedding party. After so much stress, the wedding day allowed us to take a big sigh of relief, sit back and enjoy our day! My favorite moment was having all of our family and friends who weren’t able to celebrate in person with us on livestream. Ken’s mother, Maxine, had been sick and hospitalized. We knew she wouldn’t be able to come, so it meant the world to us that she was able to be a part of our day!

WEDDINGS Favorite Details: I was honored to have lace from my mom’s wedding veil wrapped around my bouquet with a charm of my Papa tied around it. My sister, Talor Rubin with Gracefully Undone Beauty, has been doing wedding hair and makeup for years. I always knew that one day I would be the bride and there wouldn’t be anyone else I would want to get me ready for my special day! What We Are Doing Now: I am working as a registered nurse at UAB. How We Met: Both Brett and I (Jesica) would go to the gym at 5 a.m., and Brett was always reading a newspaper on the stair stepper. Who does that?! He would make me laugh, and our relationship grew from there. Brett’s account of the story is that I stalked him at the gym! Not true, but he’s always making me laugh. The Proposal: Brett proposed in beautiful Key West! Always such a gentleman, he got down on one knee and popped the question, and a shooting

star shot across the ocean sky. It was very romantic and sweet. Here’s a funny side note: Brett’s trusted friend apparently thought he lost the ring in the Atlanta airport on the way to Key West. We have laughed about it to this day! The Dress: My dress was designed by the exquisite Heidi Elnora Atelier as a custom Build-A-Bride dress. We used the lace from my mom’s wedding dress for the cuff on my sleeves. It was so sweet and sentimental to me.

WEDDINGS

Favorite Moments: It was the feeling after saying “I do” and immediately having dinner together on the rooftop looking into the sunset. Also we loved the amazing dance party at the reception. Favorite Details: For me it was walking down the aisle with my dad to the song “Hallelujah” on strings, and the champagne cart at the ceremony. How We Met: After connecting online and talking on the phone for a few weeks, Trent met me (Rebekah) for our first date at church. He came in late and sat down next to me, after acting suspicious to the security team who welcomed him in the building. As it turns out, they watched us for the first 20 minutes and noticed our awkwardness. I had to explain later that we were meeting for the first time and were very nervous. The Proposal: On a family vacation

to Santa Rosa Beach, Trent’s plans to propose had been foiled a few times before he resorted to getting on one knee on his cousin’s pier on New Year’s Eve. We lit sparklers and were waiting on 2020 to arrive when he popped the question with 10 minutes left in the day. Favorite Moments: Trent said, “There were a lot of great moments that day, but my favorite was finally seeing my bride walk down the aisle toward me.”

WEDDINGS

Favorite Details: Our wedding was perfectly planned and executed by our family at our family’s farm in Vincent. From the aisle decorations and arbor made by my sister and brother-and-law to the bales of hay our guests sat on that Trent baled himself, it was a family affair. My sister-in-law Jessica ran the whole show and worked so hard to make the day perfect in every way. How We Met: Trent and I (Elizabeth) had both just moved back to Birmingham and turned to a dating app, Bumble, and luckily ran into each other. Neither one of us were quite sure how this was going to go, but after some Auburn banter and realizing that we both went to Redeemer Community Church, we decided to go on a date at Railroad Park. On our second date we shared our stories of how Jesus has changed our lives and given us new meaning. Through time together we began to see the joy that each of us

brought into the other’s life and wanted that in our lives for the rest of our lives. The Proposal: Trent picked me up for a date night and headed to Railroad Park, where the adventure began. We then headed to Bettola to pick up food and go to the rooftop of my parents’ condo. When we arrived, the table was set with flowers, pictures and candles. That’s when Trent got down on one knee and asked for my hand in marriage. Favorite Details: The most special

WEDDINGS details were the jewelry that was my mom’s and grandmother’s and the veil that had been worn by 10 people and first by my grandmother in the ‘50s. After many new plans due to COVID-19, we finally landed on having a small, intimate wedding in my grandparents’ backyard. The weather was magical. How We Met: Neal and I (Addison) knew each other from high school, but when I moved home from college, we reconnected through soccer and kickball. A friend had given me four free entries to an obstacle race, so my roommate and I asked two guys to do the race with us.

first time I tried them on, so I think Neal panicked a little bit, thinking the ring had fallen out somewhere. Favorite Moment: On the morning before the wedding, we had coffee and exchanged letters. It was a really sweet moment and set a very intentional tone for the day.

The Proposal: We had a ski trip last Favorite Details: With all the winter, so Neal gave me new ski gloves for Christmas. He made sure I tried them changes due to coronavirus, we ended up on on Christmas morning, and the ring having a tiny wedding with 20 people was in the glove. I didn’t find the ring the total, including Neal and me. This gave

us flexibility, and we were able to have the wedding at my family’s farm, which was my original dream but had been nixed because it was too difficult logistically with a bigger wedding. I wrote the script for the ceremony, so we were able to shape it to reflect what matters most to us. My brother ended up officiating the ceremony, which I never in a million years would have imagined but he rocked it. The biggest surprise of the day was that my parents rented a horse-drawn carriage for me and my dad to ride in to the ceremony. I’ve never felt more like a princess in my life.

The Proposal: Nathan and I (Summer) met his sister at Railroad Park to walk their family’s two poodles, and they both had bandannas around their neck with diamond rings on them. When I turned around, Nathan was down on one knee, and the rest is history! The Wedding Dress: I went in for my very first dress appointment at Heidi Elnora’s atelier, and Heidi happened to be in the shop that day. So she popped in, listened to what I had in mind and then sketched up my DREAM dress

right in front of me. I said yes to the sketch, and four months later I got to see the dress in person. It was a sleek yet classic design with pearl details all along the front and back V. And for the icing on the cake, Heidi loved the dress so much that she just announced that she is adding the dress to her latest line and naming it the “Summer Wales”! Favorite Moment: The first look! Nathan is not a very emotional person so I wasn’t expecting anything when he turned around, but he was speechless

WEDDINGS and even shed some tears. It was the sweetest moment and one we will both cherish forever. Favorite Details: I danced in college at Auburn and have always grown up dancing with my dad around the house, so we had a fun breakout into “Dancing Queen” for our first dance. Also we love all things Birmingham, so during the ceremony and reception, the wedding party hopped on a bus and headed to a few photo spots for a quick photo-op, complete with biodegradable confetti poppers.

Shelby County’s Business Climate in 2021 Will Be ? Your Chamber is teaming up again this year with the University of Montevallo’s Stephens College of Business to determine what Shelby County business people think our local 2021 business outlook will look be. To do that, we’re asking Chamber investors to take a few moments to complete our Business Climate Survey developed by the Chamber’s Small Business Work Group & Dr. Stephen Craft, Dean of the Stephens College of Busi-

76 January/February 2021

ness to provide important feedback on business issues affecting your company in 2021. All individual responses will be kept confidential, but the overall results will be released and shared in composite during

the Chamber’s 2021 Business Outlook Conference co-hosted by the Stephens College of Business. The conference is set to take place in January. In addition, the information will also be shared with economic devel-

opers, elected officials and the media so we’ll all have a better idea of what business people like you think 2021 will hold for Shelby County. You can complete the survey by going online at www.shelbychamber.org. Access the survey by clicking on the “2020 Business Outlook Survey” rotator slide on the front page of the website. Details of the 2021 Business Outlook Conference will be forthcoming.

Health Focus of the Month:

Adaptogens and Dealing with Stress Ashwagandha is well known for its ability to help our body adapt to the type of stressors that seem to be ever present—the everyday life kind of stress. Bilberry is another very interesting herb. Bilberry is rich in anthocyanins, a hyper-potent anti-inflammatory molecule. Elderberry is an immune-support powerhouse. Eleutherococcus senticosus, otherwise known as Siberian Ginseng, is not the same plant as your standard ginseng. Siberian Ginseng is a spiny-stemmed shrub grown in Asia. Panax ginseng is an ancient herb. Ginseng was mentioned in the Shen-Nung Pharmacopoeia written in 196 AD. Panax, meaning “all-healing,” is an adaptogen with many benefits, including immune support and energy and metabolism boosting. Licorice root is a powerful gastrointestinal soother. Milk thistle grows in the Med-

iterranean region. Its seeds are ground and then processed to extract the plant’s adaptogen molecules. Reishi mushroom, is a woody fungus with very interesting properties. To dive deeper into this small but potent plant. Schisandra (Schizandra) Extract, ripe schizandra berries are dried and the components are extracted from the dried fruit. Turmeric is an herb of the ginger family. It is a delicious and nutritious colorful spice that is used in many different cuisines around the world. My favorite things about turmeric are its highly pigmented yellow color and its high concentration of a critical nutrient called curcumin. This bright spice is prized for its link to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is exciting to know that these nutrients do so much to boost, supplement, and enhance our body’s ability to manage what life throws at us. Keep these adapto-

genic nutrients close at hand for when you need them or add them to your normal regimen. Written by Sarah Elijah Scherer Sarah is the Shaklee Pure Performance Team dietitian/nutritionist. Ambassador of the Month Meet Jane Ann Mueller Chelsea resident and our Ambassador of the month. Adaptogens, in simple terms, are plants that help your body adapt to stress. They are grown all over the world and interestingly can often be found in harsh and nonfertile landscapes. It is thought that maybe this challenge to flourish might allow the plants to develop chemical properties that allow them to adapt to their environments. These adaptation-supporting properties are likely what also benefit our human bodies. We have learned that these properties can function in a multitargeted and multichannel network-like manner. (1) Because of this, adaptogens can be a challenge to fully understand. To help support our continued discovery of these plants, the United States Food and Drug Administration (2) defines an adaptogen as a metabolic regulator that has been proven to help in environmental adaptation and to prevent external harms. These fascinating and exciting plants are being researched to better understand their anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antistress and antioxidant properties as well as those related to immune support, rejuvenation, metabolism support, and more. Below is a list of some adaptogenic plants. Which ones have you already seen a benefit from?

MY SHELBY COUNTY KATHERINE HALL Miss Shelby County USA 2021

Class of 2020

Spain Park High School I graduated from Spain Park on May 20, 2020, and during my four years there, I was on the dance team, served as a school ambassador, was a part of the Health Sciences Academy and more. Go Jags!

Seasonal Central

Old Baker Farm Old Baker Farm is one of the best outdoor venues I like going to for multiple seasons. During the fall, the pumpkin patch can be super cute for pictures. During winter time, I love going to the Christmas tree farm to kick start the holiday season in the beautiful outdoors.

Stars Hollow 2.0

Mt Laurel I love the restaurants and small shops along with the friendly atmosphere in this cute small town. I definitely get some good Gilmore Girls vibes walking through its streets! I also took these dance photos with it in the backdrop.

Lace Up Those Skates

Pelham Civic Center I love ice skating! It is actually a secret talent I have always wished I had. Especially during the holiday season, ice skating makes my vision of a winter wonderland here in Alabama come to life!

For a Caffeine Boost

East 59 CafĂŠ This new cafe in the Village at Lee Branch is one of my favorite places to study! Studying pre-pharmacy can be a challenge, but this place makes it so relaxing with the atheistic atmosphere and coffee.
