To the mountains we went for my friend Megan’s wedding

The Big Day

I

I turn 32 this year, wrapping up what will likely be the weddingest (yes, I made that word up) decade of my life. I’ve been to the beach and to the mountains, to the backyard and to the country club, to East Coast and West, and I have a giant file folder of invitations and programs to remember them by, because wedding paper is just the loveliest. Speaking of lovely, when we started collecting weddings to feature in this issue, I found myself lost in a sea of pretty. Dresses, flowers, cakes, invitations (did I mention I like paper?)—the photos seem to say it all. But then I had to edit down all the fun details the bride or groom sent to fit the space on page, which in the end made those most meaningful details and moments pop out the most. The image “burned into the groom’s mind forever” of his bride (weepy grooms who can write well really get me, y’all), the burying of the bourbon, the bride’s father’s favorite song sung four years after his passing, the vows they wrote together, the moment they danced in the street just the two of them, the groom wiping a tear as his bride approached. Wow, talk about poignant! Which reminded me how my file folder really takes the back seat to those golden moments I have witnessed. The Elton John-style song about the couple’s story a friend surprised them with at the reception. Watching a usually not-emotional bride ugly cry her way down the aisle. The Latin American-style “crazy hour” on the dance floor that had my grandmother dancing to pop music. The bride hopping into a canoe, wedding dress and all, and paddling her way down river with her groom. When the garter got stuck on the ceiling beam. Voices filling the chapel with an acapella round song many of us learned on the spot. And always, always the groom’s face as his bride approaches. A decade of weddingness means something else for me too, though— walking with friends as life’s ups and downs ebb and flow, as marriage’s joys and sorrows ebb and flow. And it’s not all flowers and paper and dresses pretty. When their anniversaries come, it’s not so much the paper we harken back to as the moments burned in their minds, the joy they invoke, and the love and commitment it reminds them of. And that is what seems to truly be the weddingest of all. Clearly I’m a bit excited about our wedding features, but also be sure to check out our stories on what to go see at Homewood Theatre, the latest with Urban Cookhouse, Jennifer Andress’s picks for the best of Homewood and more as you flip through the pages that follow. And I always welcome your ideas for stories, so please do send them my way. Cheers!

“ ” THE QUESTION

What’s the one sentence version of how you and your spouse met?

He was climbing a tree at a rush party and I said, “Who’s that idiot?!?” Married him 10 years later.

Stalked him, pretended to be lost for directions, went on a “blind date” and then didn’t tell him I had done it ‘til we had dated a year!

She saw me at Homewood Park when we were both camp counselors, bought a ticket for the man lotto and WON!

I had just met him a moment before, my chair that was in front of him collapsed, and I fell into his lap. He said, “You’ve fallen for me already.”

A LITTLE BROADWAY FOR HOMEWOOD Kyle Bass tells us what it means to do the 18th Street stroll. BY MELANIE PEEPLES PHOTOS BY LINDSEY CULVER HomewoodLife.com 19

Kyle Bass lives on Broadway. Not in that metaphorical, musical, “they say the neon lights are bright on” sense, although he does spend a lot of time thinking about the theater. He actually lives on that Homewood thoroughfare that connects Oxmoor to Green Springs. Which makes things just perfect, because after more than two decades of acting, directing, producing and even writing for the stage in Birmingham, Kyle is now bringing a little Broadway to Homewood. Kyle didn’t discover the theater until he was a sophomore in high school. Although he can’t remember what play it was, what he does remember is being cast opposite a pretty senior and looking forward to running lines with her every day. He loved the entire process of putting on a production, and just like that, he was hooked. Not so much that he took off for New York or Los Angeles after graduation (there’s a practical side to him), but enough that even after majoring in computer science and landing a job as a health care analyst for Blue Cross Blue Shield, he became a regular around Birmingham’s thriving theaters. He settled down in Homewood, raised a family, and now that the kids are grown, he has the time to make a longtime dream of his a reality. “I’d been talking with people for years that it would be nice to have a theater in Homewood,” he says. They’d sit around after performances at various theaters in Birmingham and imagine not having to drive downtown to do it. “You might be able even to park your car, walk to get dinner, walk back and see a show, without even going over the mountain,” he says. He’s even coined a name for it: doing the 18th Stroll. And so, two years ago he started the process. It took nine months just to get the paperwork in order making them a non-profit. Then, it was time to find a theater. One of the very things that so many people like about Homewood—finite boundaries that make too much sprawl impossible—also makes it hard to find space for a theater. So Kyle looked at his options, and that included The Dance Foundation. It has an auditorium that holds 100 and just sits empty most weekend nights. It’s small and intimate. And that’s a good thing. Imagine going to the theater and being close enough to really read the actor’s face. “When you’re in a small theater, I think it kind of

The show is presented in the form of a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is, “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” APRIL 6-8, 2018 I am tickled to have David Strickland directing this one. It’s kind of like Seinfeld set to music. It’s a fun one that will entertain everyone—even the folks who may not happen at all! encourages you—it’s kind of like you’re with friends,” Kyle says. “You’re not in a 2,000-seat theater [where] you kind of feel a little nervous about laughing. If you’re in here with just a hundred of your closest friends, I think it encourages laughing.” It also allows Kyle to do some fun things with the seating. When he held a cabaret-style performance last year, he was able to put bistro tables on the floor, and audience members sat at the tables like they were at a little piano bar. Homewood Theatre serves complimentary beer and wine, and even offers a meet-and-greet with cast members afterward on opening night. And Kyle says 300 people a weekend going out to dinner before catching a show at Homewood Theatre is also good businesses for downtown restaurants. One of the great things about Homewood is it still has a downtown area, unlike Vestavia and Hoover, which Kyle says are more like

highway communities. “I think we’re a special little community. It’s the only place I know that ran a Starbucks out of business. Not because they don’t like Starbucks, but because it went in too close to O’Henry’s. They didn’t like that. They’d still go over to Mountain Brook Starbucks,” Kyle says, chuckling. But they wouldn’t go to the Homewood Starbucks because they were afraid they were trying to put O’Henry’s out of business. That’s just the kind of city Kyle thinks will embrace his idea, and give it a real home, just a bit off Broadway. Kyle says the Homewood Theatre will be holding an open casting call for upcoming plays Always a Bridesmaid and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and he’s hoping to see some Homewood faces audition. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Judith Wright & Laura Tucker

Homewood Librarians on New Telescope Rental PHOTO BY MADOLINE MARKHAM

Have you heard? As of the start of 2018, Homewood Public Library is renting out telescopes—with possibly our favorite random perk, a fanny pack that holds a user manual, lens brush and head lamp. You can also enter to win your own telescope between now and April 21. It all was funded by a grant from the Homewood Rotary Club and a part of the library’s NASA @ My Library grant programming. To learn more about all of this, we chatted with children’s librarian Laura Tucker and teen librarian Judith Wright, pictured above with Merrick Wilson of the Rotary and Library Director Deborah Fout. Where did the idea for telescope rental come from? Judith: Some libraries have community interests that are different than books and will check out neckties if they have a high unemployment rate or life coaches, and I was in a webinar where I heard from a library that checked out telescopes. Their community was really interested in STEM, which is what we are like here. I was like, “I bet Homewood would love telescopes.” With the Rotary grant, we were able to purchase eight Orion StarBlast 4.5 telescopes.

Most of Urban Cookhouse’s milestones happened in a room that no one knows exists: the basement. The basement is where Andrea and David Snyder, the brains and brawn behind the brand Urban Cookhouse, celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in June of 2010, just seven days before the restaurant opened. When Andrea found out she was expecting their first child that August, a daughter, she called David to the basement to tell him by presenting him with an Alabama sippy cup she picked up at Swaddle. “If you can’t tell,” she says, “we love Homewood.” It makes sense, then, that even though Urban Cookhouse moved up the road to a new 29th Avenue location offering more seating, a drive-through window where you can call ahead to place orders and a parking lot, the Snyders are holding on to the 18th Street location. “We’re planning to launch something new there in 2018, but we’re not quite ready to share just yet,” Andrea says. “We launched Urban Cookhouse in Homewood over seven years ago. Farm Bowl + Juice Company launched in late 2017. The new place will make three Homewood-based brands. We can’t wait!” While most Homewood residents have tried Urban Cookhouse, few have had the chance to sample the best of the newlyopened Farm Bowl + Juice Company, also located in their new 29th Avenue building. “You have to try the Acai bowl,” says Andrea, referring to a dish that’s making waves in Nashville and Atlanta, but is relatively new to the Birmingham restaurant scene. A close second? The oatmeal, which can be ordered hot or cold. “The menu is all plant based without any animal products, but we don’t want that to scare people” Andrea says. “Our staff is educated to help you make menu choices based on your needs. The Snyders, who have since launched 12 other Urban Cookhouse locations, have long loved Homewood. They got their start working for another Homewood institution, Zoës Kitchen, before starting Urban Cookhouse. “We learned a ton working at Zoës. When we opened Urban Cookhouse, we dreamed about living in Homewood. We love it—we’ve always loved it.” Shortly after the birth of their first daughter, they made the move to the neighborhood and never looked back. These days, the Snyders stay busy managing their Urban Cookhouse locations, along with launching their new brands, and keeping up with their two daughters, ages 6 and 4. Andrea and David insist on instilling Homewood values in their daughters. While they have their favorites on the Urban Cookhouse menu—Piggy Mac, the half-baked cookie, and the grilled cheese—the girls have never played around in the kitchen. “We didn’t want them to grow up with a sense of entitlement,” says Andrea. “I’m pretty sure they know we own the restaurant, but maybe not. They do know to go thank the kitchen staff after every meal.” The cooking gene has rubbed off on their elder daughter, who has started selling cakes to her neighbors under the name Sugar House Treats.

Andrea and David credit the success of Urban Cookhouse with their personal dedication and engagement and a staff that routinely anticipates needs and exceeds customer expectations. “Our staff knows that if they see a mom with a kid under three, grab the high chair. Get the coloring sheet. Grab the crayons. Do what you can to make it easier on the mom to enjoy dinner out,” Andrea says. While their time and their staff’s skills make for a familyfriendly atmosphere, what keeps the restaurant fresh and relevant is its carefully crafted menu, one that’s based off what the local farmers are growing. “Our most important value, our core value, is supporting the local farmer,” says Andrea. “And it’s not just buying locally, or ordering from them, it’s truly supporting them year around.” The Snyders may not be inviting everyone into the basement at the 18th street location, but the feeling and vibe of the original home of Urban Cookhouse will live on in the new location down the road. There’s one other thing that did make the move. When Urban Cookhouse opened, Andrea had a gift made for David, a plaque for the service counter that reads, “I will give you the confidence to follow your dreams.” “It was one of my wedding vows to David,” Andrea says, one that, as the duo prepares to launch yet another Homewood-based brand, carries over into their everyday lives. l

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Giani Respinto Pizzeria GM Owner

Gianmarco’s owner Giani Respinto likens opening his second restaurant to releasing his second album. None of the dishes will be the same as the white tablecloth Edgewood eatery he opened nearly 15 years ago, but the quality of Italian freshness will certainly carry over into Pizzeria GM. It’s set to open next to Patriot Park in West Homewood by early February, and he plans to start serving up pizza at 11 a.m. every day except Monday when they will be closed and wrap up at 9 p.m. on weeknights, 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Why West Homewood? Why pizza? It’s an up-and-coming neighborhood, and we wanted to do something more accessible and reasonable than what we do at Gianmarco’s, which is white tablecloth. It’s not just another pizza joint. We are going to be doing pizzas, but we are also going to be doing small plates and salads and sandwiches. We’ll have a 60-bottle wine list and 20 beers. Nothing will be over $15. It will be sit-down full service. I think often places are getting too casual. When I go out, I want to be waited on. What will the interior and exterior of the space be like? We have tons of outdoor seating—a covered porch, two open patios, and a large outdoor space for games with bocce ball and cornhole. You can bring your dog and you can bring your kids, as long as both are well behaved. The inside is very 30 HomewoodLife.com

New York industrial—lots of concrete, lots of cinderblock, lots of wood from a winery in Oregon, a lot of red oak and walnut. It’s like a big bomb shelter. It will seat 87 people inside, and outside 50 to 60. If you were going to order pizza for yourself, what would it be? I would order the clam pie. It’s clams and pecorino and fontina and fresh sliced garlic and fresh slivered jalapenos and fresh oregano. It’s an old school Neapolitan crust with a 24-hour proof. We will do a chicken parmesan pizza, a meatball pizza, a sausage and peppers pizza, a porchetta (Italian pork roast) pizza. Instead of having a million ingredients on the menu, we’re just saying if we’ve got it, you can have it. We buy fresh and local wherever we can. Nothing is going to be out of a can except our tomatoes from San Marzano. We make our

own mozzarella. Everything we do at Gianmarco’s is going to carry over to there quality wise. Can you talk more about the small plates on the menu? We’ve got a big meatball, and we’re doing hot crab meat spinach artichoke dip. We’ll do a burrata dish, and we’re making our own porchetta so we’ll have a porchetta app. We’re doing clams porcino—a bunch a different things. You say you keep getting asked when Pizzeria GM is opening. Where do you think the excitement comes from? I know people in West Homewood are really craving something they can call their own, and that’s what we want it to be. You can bring your kids and sit outside drinking beer, and send your kids to the park. I think it’s going to be neat. I’m excited.

BEAUTY IN THE DETAILS Sherri Arias uses watercolors to capture moments that pass all too quickly on the big day.

BY SARAH WALLER | PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR

HomewoodLife.com 33

I

In her studio in West Homewood, Sherri Arias is adding the final details to a painting she began during a wedding ceremony at the Grand Bohemian Hotel. A dab of pink adds a little blush to the bride’s cheeks, and a small handkerchief is added to the hand of the bride’s mother who sits on the front row. The details of the painting are extraordinary. Anyone who was in attendance would be able to pick themselves out in the crowd. While the wedding lasted for only a few hours, Sherri was able to finish the majority of the painting before the bride and groom made their getaway exit. When asked how she put so much detail into the painting in such a short amount of time, Sherri laughs. “I just can’t help it,” she says. “What’s not to love about a wedding day—two families coming together to make a covenant with one another. When a family will allow me to be a part of that, it is just an incredible blessing for me. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.” Sherri’s role as a live event painter is just one of many that has arisen over the past three years as she’s worked to established her self-titled business, S. Arias Creates. For the majority of her career, she was art teacher, working at both Liberty Park Elementary School and Homewood High School. “I retired after 25 years of teaching before my daughter got married, and that’s really where this all began,” Sherri says. “In planning her wedding, I realized then that there was another world out there, and it dealt with romantic, beautiful things on a daily basis. I was like, ‘Why am I not doing this?’ It’s incredible.” For her daughter Brittany Arias Sturdivant’s wedding, Sherri created a number of unique pieces of art, including watercolors of places that were special to the couple, like where they went on their first date and where they got engaged. These paintings were placed on tables throughout the reception. “That’s where it all started,” she notes. Her next step was commissioned pieces. “This may sound odd, but for a number of brides, I painted scenes which hadn’t happened yet, like a portrait of a mother and bride together in their dresses,” she says. “Or I’ve even painted an entire family.” Then in 2015, less than a year into her new business, she was asked if she could do live event painting. “We did a lot for this specific wedding—the program, invitation suite and favors. The bride’s mother was a former colleague, and I had actually

taught the bride when she was in school,” Sherri says. “So when she asked me if I could do it, I said yes.” Looking back on that first live event painting, Sherri admits it was one of her best ones: “I was hyper-focused on it, and it’s one of my better ones because of it. “After I did it, I realized, okay, that wasn’t that bad. I can do this. I might be able to even advertise that I can do this.” And over the next two years, she did. In 2017, she completed six live event paintings, and she says she already has that many in the works for 2018. She advertises that she’ll complete 70 percent of the painting by the time the event is over, and within the week—before the bride and groom are back from their honeymoon— she’ll be able to deliver the finalized piece. “There are not many people out there doing live event

painting, and there are even fewer people using watercolors because it’s intimidating and scary for many people. For me, I’m excited by the challenge,” Sherri says. That challenge for her includes artistic touches photos can’t quite create. Often it’s a first dance she paints, and when a family member is missing for one reason or another, she can just paint them in like they were there. “I love creating for weddings because of the impact these projects make,” Sherri says. “It’s all those little special moments or memories that, as an artist, you’re tapped into. You’re sensitive to it and the emotional impact it can make.” Sherri sees the impact of her paintings through the crowds that gather around her at weddings. “The guests love coming over and finding themselves in the painting, HomewoodLife.com 35

WEDDINGS

and that’s the fun part. My years of teaching pay off in these moments because I’m very comfortable with painting and drawing in front of people,” she says. Along with live painting, a large portion of Sherri’s business is dedicated to the design of paper goods, including wedding invitations, programs and even customized maps. She partners with Alex Fly with Alex Fly Designs. Using Sherri’s watercolors, Alex completes the designs, including her own calligraphy. “Together, we can do just about anything the bride wants,” she says. And then to take it a step further, Sherri rents out the studio she shares in West Homewood with her daughter, who runs Love Be Photography, as a venue for events like showers, teas and small parties. Studio Bham is great for people who are hosting a party but live out-oftown because they do everything for you except the food, and that includes supplying trays, drink dispensers and floral arrangements she creates. In a way, Sherri has set up her business to work with a client from bridal shower to baby shower. She breaks out into laughter when this idea is mentioned. “I guess you’re right. We can do a lot in-house for one client,” she says. “But it just hasn’t happened yet.” To learn more about Sherri and her work, go to sherriarias.net.

If buying your first home is in your near future, check out my tips for a smooth transaction: Decide what you can afford. It’s no secret that one of the first steps in the home-buying process is deciding what exactly you can afford in a home. Don’t consider what you may be able to afford in the future. Research the neighborhood. If possible, drive or walk through the neighborhood you’re considering to determine if you can see yourself living in this area. Remember that photos will always show a neighborhood in its best light, so don’t blindly trust what you see on the screen. Get a home inspection. Evaluating needed repairs and renovations raises the need for a professional inspection. What Not to Wear

A Style Guide for Wedding Guests BY MADOLINE MARKHAM

Style coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth frequently gets asked for advice on what to wear—and not wear— to weddings.

Follow the Dress Code

What do I wear to a barn wedding? How do I dress up for a black tie affair when it’s cold outside? We’re always asking friends and Google what we should wear to weddings, so we turned to style coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth for some answers and style inspiration for our 2018 weddings. We like her perspective: “The whole point of fashion is to have fun so when you are getting ready for that event, you are excited to go and feel festive and enjoy yourself more.” Read on for more tips and ideas from Megan on how to dress to feel comfortable and confident.

One of the biggest things I see is clients wondering how dressy they should be for a cocktail or a black tie wedding because things have gotten so much more casual. I know it’s so easy to wear something that’s not quite black tie, but stick to the dress code.

48 HomewoodLife.com

Style Rules Leave White for the Bride

Forget the Pantyhose

I think the rule not to wear white still applies. I still don’t think it’s ever appropriate unless the bride requests everyone to wear white because it’s her special day to do so. If your dress has white in the print or texture, that’s okay.

Hose are dated, and unless you are Kate Middleton, it’s not necessarily your friend. A lot of my clients say, “But my legs are pale or have spider veins,” so I recommend using a sunless tanner or a spray tan if that makes you feel better.

WEDDINGS

But what do I wear to THIS wedding? Time of Day Afternoon

I think a nice church kind of dress is typically appropriate, unless the invitation states otherwise. A great nude pump is always good, or a sleek wedge.

Venue

Early Evening

This is typically cocktail attire. You don’t have to go full bedazzled and sequined, but definitely wear a nice cocktail dress and a strappier sandal heel.

Barn or Farm

Go with a dress that’s more relaxed looking, maybe it’s a floral or flowy. A block heel sandal or sleek wedge works well because it won’t sink into the ground.

Modern Venue

Wear something that’s sleek and chic, fits that vibe and is a nod to the venue. It will help you feel more confident when you get there because you will fit in more.

Country Club or Similar Venue

Black Tie

I really encourage people to go long. But you can also choose a really dressy cocktail dress, maybe one that’s tea length to elevate it.

Do something that suits your personal style. You can think outside the box so it’s not just your same black lace dress.

Essentials for Your Wardrobe Keep these dressy staples on hand so even if you wait until the last minute to pick out a dress, getting dressed for an event is so much easier.

Evening Shoes

I love to get my clients one evening shoe they can wear with everything, typically a strappy muted metallic because it will really go with every color. If you have basics like a nude pump on hand, when a wedding or special event arises, you aren’t asking, “What shoe am I going to wear?” You already have one.

Pashmina Wrap

One of my favorite tricks for colder weather is a black cashmere pashmina. It’s something great to have on hand to keep you warm, and it’s also good for travel.

Clutch

It’s important to leave our everyday bags at home and invest in one clutch or small shoulder bag. It pulls your whole look together and can really elevate it. A black or muted metallic color and a clean and minimal design are typically the most versatile. HomewoodLife.com 49

1. How do I keep from freezing when it’s cold outside? If it’s an afternoon wedding or outdoors, black opaque tights can be totally fine if it’s the right dress. Pair it with a closed-toe black shoe to continue that vertical visual line. For cocktail and black tie unless it’s an outdoor wedding, I think it’s best to wear a coat and go from the car to the venue and grin and bear it. A lot of my clients have really loved doing a cape, maybe with a fur trim.

2. What are some ideas to try a different look? A jumpsuit can be a really fun wedding alternative. Maybe it’s sequined or velvet,

FAQs That Keep Us Wondering maybe it’s a thicker silk. Rent the Runway, an online fashion rental company, is a great opportunity for experimenting because you can do something you wouldn’t necessarily buy or want to wear one time.

accessories and dress it up or dress it down. Maybe you can put a great pendant necklace with it, maybe a statement earring and cuff, maybe fun shoe—things that will make it feel fresh so you are not wearing the same thing to every wedding.

3. If I’m going to try to only buy one or two dresses, what should I look for?

4. Can I re-wear a dress around a similar crowd?

I have a lot of clients who will go with a black cocktail dress that is a medium/ all-season fabric so they can wear it all year round. Or it could be navy or a beautiful fuchsia. Picking a seasonless color and material can give you that one-and-done dress if you don’t go to that many weddings. You can change up the entire look with

It depends on how long it’s been and how big of an event it is. If it’s a memorable dress and the same group of people a month apart, it’s nice to have two options, or to have one and rent the other. If you are going to a wedding in November and another one in May and it’s an all-season dress, then by all means wear it again.

How We Met: In the summer of 2015, Nick was a studious graduate student of optometry trying to figure out how he was going to pass his neuro final and Kathryn a new mom to baby Luke trying to adjust to a new chapter in life. Both were looking for true love. Nick waited for over a month after swiping right and matching with a brown-haired southern belle from Homewood before they met at the Starbucks in Wildwood. The Proposal: Nick took Kathryn up to their special spot at Vestavia Hills

Baptist Church with a beautiful view overlooking Homewood to catch the sunset before dinner. Nick had memorized every line of the note he’d written her, but as Kathryn read it, he forgot all the lines. When she got to the last paragraph, Nick was able to catch his composure to say the lines out loud to her: “If happy ever after did exist, I’d be holding onto you like this. Baby, Baby Baby, Oh, won’t you always be mine!” And he got down on one knee with the ring. Favorite Moment: Just before

The day his internship ended, he asked me out, which was funny to me because I had no idea he was interested in me. We dated during the fall of 2003 and then parted ways since he was in school at Auburn. Fast forward 10 years, and we reconnected in Birmingham and started dating in the fall of 2013. The rest is history. The Proposal: Bo surprised me with

a weekend getaway to one of our favorite cities, Savannah. He picked me up from work and drove me to the airport. I had no idea where we were going, and he had packed all my bags for me. When I say he packed all my bags, I mean all my bags—the makeup, clothes, dresses, shoes, everything! We had nice dinners and a really great time sightseeing. On Sunday afternoon I let my suspicions die down as I thought we were heading to go home, but Bo wanted to stop by a beautiful riverfront condo we had stayed at in previous trips before going to the

I (Kelly) commented to my friend how cute I thought he was, and she responded by telling me she knew him and insisted that she would bring him over to talk to me. She introduced us, and the rest is history. The Proposal: My friend Dani asked me if Andrew and I wanted to have brunch on Sunday after church with her and her husband, and little did I know

that it was actually Andrew who had made the reservation at Gallery and Garden! Dani asked me if I had any ideas of how to spend our free time in between, but I didn’t have any ideas. She suggested that we go to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. I didn’t think anything of it and agreed. As soon as we get there, Andrew headed toward the reflecting lily pad pools. I followed him because I had no idea where I was going since I had never been there before. As soon as I met him there, he grabbed my hand and asked me to walk with him. It

was in that moment that I knew Andrew was going to ask me to marry him. He proposed right in front of the reflecting pools. It was the most perfect moment of life, besides our wedding of course! Favorite Moment: Our first look was both our favorite moment. For me, seeing Andrew took away all of my nerves. It allowed me to take a deep breath and relax. I knew that as long as I had him, that was all that mattered. Andrew said he loved seeing me in my wedding dress and that it took away his nervousness as well.

How We Met: We met in Auburn when we were there for college back around 2008. I (Allie) had classes with a friend who grew up with Zac, and she introduced us. We had mutual friends and hung out and went to several football games together. After college, I moved to Georgia and Zac moved to Tennessee to pursue our careers. We both moved back to Birmingham and reconnected and began dating in 2015. The Proposal: Zac proposed to me when we were on vacation on 30A. We took a walk along the beach during the

day, and he proposed on the walk down by the water. We were so excited to share this special occasion with my parents who were also on vacation with us. Favorite Moment: One of my favorite moments was the first look at the Tutwiler Hotel. It was raining, so we did the reveal on the balcony of a hotel room suite. We were both excited to finally see each other that day. The other favorite moment was our dinner location. After the ceremony, Zac and I went straight out of the venue into our

WEDDINGS getaway car. The backseat of the classic Rolls Royce had trays that came down, and just the two of us sat back there and ate our meal together before greeting our guests and enjoying the reception. Favorite Details: The food, especially the homemade peach and blackberry cobbler and ice cream instead of the groom’s cake. Our florist did a great job incorporating hydrangeas and cotton into our floral arrangements, which was a very important detail that we wanted to have be a part of our special day.

The Proposal: After we decided to get married, we found a house that checked all of the boxes on our list. It was in Homewood, big enough for all of the children and close enough to the interstate to allow easy access to Scott’s parents in Shelby County. I (Danielle) joked that instead of a ring, I got an engagement house. Scott’s sister bought a thrift store ring, replaced the stone with a piece of brick DECEMBER 10, 2016 and gave it to Scott for me, and Scott proposed to me with the brick ring. We PHOTOS BY ADRIENNE HOLLOWAY PHOTOGRAPHY soon replaced the brick ring with a real

one and started planning the big day. Favorite Moment: Danielle’s son, Aaron, escorted her outside for us to do reveal pictures. “Seeing how beautiful she looked in her dress and how happy our children were that we were getting married was one of my many favorite moments of the day,” Scott says. Favorite Details: Our daughter, Kaitlyn, sang “I Get to Love You” by Ruelle during the ceremony, and our other two children, Aaron and Grace, read scripture as part of the ceremony.

WEDDINGS

Having our three kids participate in the ceremony was very important to us. We even included them on the wedding invitation. To honor the memory of Scott’s dad, we had a picture of him where he would have been seated next to his mother and placed his hammer with a red rose on the altar table. As a tribute to her grandparents, Danielle’s bouquet included a charm with their photo in it. Another favorite was the sand ceremony where we all poured different colors of sand into one vase to symbolize the blending of our two families.

How We Met: John Crawford and I (Andrea) first met at a mutual friend’s birthday dinner at Slice back in summer of 2013. Truth be told, to this day I don’t even remember meeting him at the dinner that night! Almost, a year to the day later, we reconnected on social media, and once our friends knew there was an interest there, they set up a barbecue at their house and invited us both. We exchanged numbers and began dating, and the rest is history. Favorite Moment: I come from a HUGE Italian/Lebanese family, and

many of JC’s family and friends are still in Montgomery. To get everyone together is a true miracle of sorts! We had people come town in from places as far as New York to Texas. To look out into the crowd at our ceremony and see all of our friends and family who had come together to celebrate us was just overwhelming—in a good way. Favorite Details: We really wanted our love for Birmingham to shine through on our wedding day. Our outof-town guests were greeted with welcome boxes full of Birmingham

WEDDINGS original treats like Bob’s Best Cookies, Golden Flake Chips and a hand-drawn map of Birmingham. When we exited our reception, it was so neat to see Railroad Park all lit up at night. Also, for as long as I can remember, I have wanted to wear my mom’s veil—it’s truly stunning. We got it taken off of an ’80s-style crown and put onto a more modern-style clip. It was so special being able to wear that heirloom piece, and it went so perfectly with my gown that it seemed it was just meant to be.

How We Met: I (Sarah) decided I would ask Eric to my last semi-formal at Middle Tennessee State University just as friends, and it was the most fun first date I had ever experienced. A few weeks later, he showed up to my last chapter meeting with a dozen roses in hand. He shared some news about an upcoming philanthropy week, and he then asked me to come to the front and asked me on a second date. The Proposal: We took a guided hike 3 miles down the Grand Canyon, and when our tour guide asked if we wanted a

picture overlooking the beautiful view, Eric’s breathing got really heavy and I thought he was just nervous being close to the edge. We took a “picture” (it was actually a video), and Eric asked me to spend the rest of my life by his side. Favorite Moment: We didn’t really have a rain plan, and the Wednesday before the wedding, Birmingham was under tornado warnings with terrible rain. I kept praying, “Lord, please let this pass!” and thankfully it did. The weather could not have been any more perfect. Our minister

WEDDINGS

and family friend, Hunter Twitty, gave a beautiful message, and with his help, Eric and I wrote our vows together. Favorite Details: Eric and I did a semi-choreographed dance to Lionel Richie’s “You Are.” My brother works for BlackRidge Land Co., and they were kind enough to let us use their truck as our getaway car. Our bar was custom built by my talented father-in-law, and my motherin-law surprised us with custom cornhole boards with our ceremony site as the backdrop. We also had a polaroid guestbook.

The Proposal: I (Michelle) was expecting Brad to propose on a beach trip over Memorial Day. I got my nails done, packed multiple fancy outfits, etc. On the last night we went to Cafe 30-A (my favorite restaurant that my parents have been taking me to since I was a child), but I was in a not-so-pleasant mood. Right when I was starting to admit that I was upset because he had not proposed, he got on one knee and told me he always wants to make me happy and that is what he plans to do for the rest of our lives.

The Wedding Dress: I am a former ballerina and a forever girly girl. My dress was not the sparkly ball gown that everyone expected me to wear. It has a simple but classy front with a beautiful high neck line. It showed off my curves that I work so hard for weightlifting. Favorite Moment: I will never forget the flood of emotions when the wooden church doors opened and it was time for my dad to walk me down the aisle. Once I got close enough to see Brad’s smile clearly, I was overwhelmed with joy again. Our photographer Hilary

WEDDINGS actually captured a photo of Brad wiping a tear away as I am walking toward him. I love looking at that photo to remind me of the intense love I felt that day. Favorite Details: Brad planned the honeymoon completely by himself. I had no idea where we were going. The day of the wedding Brad and I wrote each other letters and exchanged them without seeing each other. My letter from Brad was sweet and had me tearing up until I read the last line, “I cannot wait to begin our adventure together in Fiji!” I was speechless.

How We Met: Chris and I (Stephanie) went to Homewood Middle and Homewood High School together, and graduated in the class of 1990. We were even crowned king and queen of the HMS 8th grade Valentine’s Dance (even though Chris has no recollection of this)! However, we didn’t utter one word to each other until 2012, when Chris and I reconnected via “the Facebook.” We didn’t actually see each other until the summer of 2015, when Chris helped build a deck for me. Chris’s story is

that I started flirting first, but I maintain that it was Chris who started the flirting. In November 2015, Chris began coming to church with me and joining me and my foster son at the zoo on a regular basis. Chris later asked me to dinner, and the rest is history. The Proposal: On December 29, 2016, Chris set aside his dislike of Auburn, and he proposed to me in front of Samford Hall at Auburn University—my favorite place on earth. Favorite Moment: We wrote our

own vows, so it was so special to hear our vows recited to one another during the ceremony. What was especially special was having several of our friends from the Homewood High Class of 1990 there in attendance. We both grew up in Homewood, continue to live in Homewood, and we have made lifelong friends in Homewood. Favorite Details: One of my bridesmaids sang “What A Beautiful Name” while Chris and I participated in the sacrament of communion—a holy moment that will never be forgotten.

How We Met: I (Jamie) had been through a string of bad online dates and was considering giving up on the whole scene. But decided to go on one last date. It was a date I will remember forever. The Proposal: We were in the elevator at Vulcan, and Eden gripped my hand slightly. I thought she might know what is about to happen. The reality was she is afraid of heights. I mustered up enough courage and asked her to spend the next 70 years with me. Favorite Moment: The first look

was the best part of the wedding day. I turned around and my eyes were watering from those “damn allergies. Eden looked so stunning, so amazing, and it hit me that this was the moment, this was the time and this was the woman. All of the planning, the laughs, the arguments and the cake tastings led to this one moment that I knew we would both cherish for the rest of our lives. That image of her is burned into my memory forever. Favorite Detail: Eden was adamant on this classic Southern tradition

WEDDINGS burying a bottle of bourbon in the earth one month prior to the wedding for good weather. The irony of the situation is that to ensure good weather, we buried the bottle of Basil Hayden during the nastiest, muddiest, rainy day of the summer with only the assistance of a stick, a rain boot, bare hands and Eden’s tenacity to accomplish the mission. The mission was accomplished and the wedding day was perfect with gorgeous weather. The dirty bottle of bourbon was pretty damn good as well as Eden and I enjoyed it with our entire wedding party.

The Proposal: We always enjoy visiting New York City, so on December 15, 2015, Casey proposed to me under the Rockefeller Christmas Tree. Is there anything better than Christmastime in NYC? Favorite Moment: Spending time with friends, family, and all the people

we love and cherish. Favorite Details: “He Leadeth Me is a special song to me for many reasons. When I was growing up, I listened to this song a lot with my dad while riding in the car. It quickly became one of our favorite songs. My dad passed away in 2013 unexpectedly from a rare heart condition. So, I wanted to incorporate something special such as this song into my wedding so that he could be a part of my big day as well. I also listened to this song before tests in pharmacy

MY HOMEWOOD JENNIFER ANDRESS

Avid Runner + Running Coach + Homewood City Council Member

For After-Run Coffee

O’Henry’s Coffees A favorite hang out with friends after a run, I love the oatmeal for protein-carb replenishment, and in the summer the iced chai latte is my favorite cool-down drink! O’Henry’s is owned by Randy and Mary Adamy, runners themselves and friends of the running community.

For the Kids

The Bell Center I have been a BellRunner for 11 years, running the Mercedes each year for a hearing-impaired child. I ran my first marathon for a hearing-impaired Bell Center child, the daughter of my son’s first-grade teacher while he was in her class. That school year is one of the most treasured memories of my life, working with and running for her, while my son was having his surgery for cochlear implants.

Runners’ Central

Trak Shak If you are just getting started, like most of the folks I coach at Resolute Running Training Center, this is where you begin! The pros can give you an individual fitting to select the best shoe for your foot and stride, and to prevent injuries. Then join a couple hundred of your friends with the Birmingham Track Club on Saturday mornings for group runs of all paces and distances.

For Non-Running Clothes

Melissa Mistrot at Fab’rik Melissa sets a dressing room up for me a few times a year, and I go in and act out that famous scene from Pretty Woman. The staff there always helps me pick out stylish clothes that are still age-appropriate, and even though everything is fun and current, it is not a fortune. I buy all of my friends’ birthday gifts here as well!

On the Trail Again

The Lakeshore Trail I spend hours there each week, running slow, running fast, walking or running my dog, meeting friends, running with my family, and even biking. My oldest son runs for the high school now, and they work out there often. We all owe a huge thanks to Homewood’s own Jane Reed Ross for her design, and Phase II into West Homewood is underway.
