It’s a great place to live. Whatever your species may be.

The renowned biologist E.O. Wilson has called it “an aquatic treasure house.” The World Wildlife Fund and Nature Conservancy included it as one of just eight “Hotspots of Diversity” in the entire world. It’s the Cahaba—the longest free-flowing river in Alabama, with more fish species per kilometer than any other river in North America, including 18 species that exist nowhere else.

But, to us, it’s an unparalleled place to reconnect with nature by canoeing, kayaking, hiking, birding, botanizing, or merely floating in its waters. In the clean water we return to the river, and through our efforts with Adopt-A-Stream, SouthWest Water Company is doing our part to ensure the Cahaba is there for future generations to enjoy—whatever their species may be. The Rusted Roof Barn

Heather Whitley, right, started The Rusted Roof Barn, and her friend Amy Taylor is a certified instructor there. Photo by Mary Fehr Design by Connor Martin-Lively

I can still hear the crunching sounds of horses eating carrots and apples, their whiskers tickling the palm of my hand every time they took another treat I offered. My family and I had decided to visit a retired horse farm in Ocala, Florida, during a vacation one summer many years ago, and the farm’s owners let us visitors feed and pet the horses that came up to the fence. As we listened to the owners talk about where some of the horses had been prior to coming to the farm, I wondered just what these animals had endured before their second chance at a good life arrived—a chance to live out their golden years on a quiet farm in the care of a loving family. My memories of meeting these horses surfaced when I first read Melanie Peeples’ story in this issue about the Rusted Roof Barn, where rescued horses can heal from previous circumstances in their own time. Situated just inside the gates of Oak Mountain State Park, it’s a haven for the horses as much as it is for owner Heather Whitley—and for many people who, like her, find solace in the saddle. This beautiful account of Heather’s journey to opening the Rusted Roof Barn opened my eyes to yet another incredible program in Shelby County I knew little about beforehand. If this is your introduction to it, too, I hope it inspires you as much as it inspires me. Another program I learned much more about as we pieced together this issue is The Hillsboro School, a Montessori school situated on a 30-acre spread of land in Helena. In cofounder Dr. Melinda Bray’s words, it is “an idyllic place to wander, wonder and be.” In addition to standard classroom curriculum, students can take their learning outside of the school building while hiking, working in the garden, walking the campus trails and completing activities in outdoor classrooms. The school even has rabbits and bees that students can help care for, with parents’ permission. If you’re like me, reading Emily Reed’s story about The Hillsboro School will make you want to be a kid again. If any story ideas come to mind as you read, please feel free to reach out to me any time. I wish you a happy and healthy summer!

Diverse books on display included Belinda the Unbeatable: A Graphic Novel by Nordling; How My Parents Learned to Eat by Friedman; La Princesa and the Pea by Elya. After reading and discussing the books, each child painted on canvas and added tissue paper to create cherry trees inspired by Sakura’s Cherry Blossoms. The library was awarded the 2018 Virginia Hamilton and Arnold Adoff Creative Outreach Grant of $1,000 to exclusively fund the book club.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Rethink Old School “What’s old is new again.” How many times have you heard that? When you think in terms of not having enough hours in the day or admitting you’re spread too thin, there’s nothing new or old about those perceptions. This summer may feel the same as this time last year (or 12 years ago) and before you can blink—school, homework and football are back on your planner. Priority awareness is the biggest mind shift you can have in today’s non-stop pace. Sometimes our habits that keep us in rhythm with juggling so many things—like getting up early, fixing lunches the night before or working with a calendar—disappear for a million different reasons. This usually happens because something “better” comes along and we think old school is just “old.” Rethink and revisit Owner of SimpleWorks, the following proven ideas to handle Simpleworks.guru what life is throwing at you: lisa@simpleworks.guru Schedule it. While most of us 205.981.7733 make appointments with other people, we rarely put ourselves on our own calendar. Never underestimate the power of an appointment with yourself. Block off time, write it in ink and don’t cancel or postpone on yourself. You’re no good to those you love if your energy is drained and emptied. “96.” Pareto’s Principle states that roughly 80 percent of the effects come from 20 percent of the causes. In most cases, 80 percent of the work you need to do can be completed in 20 percent of the time. An eight-hour work day is 96 minutes. What could you accomplish if you had 96 minutes to focus on your “priority list?” Let others know. Interruptions are a major killer in your focus to finish. Let coworkers, staff and family know you’re tied up and when you’ll be able to be reached. Be proactive in focusing on your priority list versus responding to someone’s emergency. “A lack of planning on your part doesn’t constitute an emergency on my part.” Ouch. Good mantra. Bust your hump day. Consider Wednesday as the day you “bust it out” and become the Energizer Bunny. Alter your normal routine by getting to work earlier or staying later than usual. By doing this, your perspective of time shifts. Consider doing this once a week until you get caught up with the work. Being productive means having solid focus skills in place. It’s having control over what you do next. Choose between priority over task and important over trivial. Replace the words “old” and “new” with “current” and “proven.” There’s nothing old school about that. It’s that simple.

Sally Dollar packages life lessons for children in her collection of bite-size poetry treats. BY LINDSAY SCHLUNTZ PHOTOS DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

18 July/August 2019

When Sally Dollar decided to purposefully share some key life lessons with her children, she tapped into a sweet childhood memory to do so in a memorable way. “I have vivid memories of my mom reading poetry to me as a child and memorizing my favorites. I’ve always enjoyed poetry – the rhythm and the beat – and the ability to pack so much meaning into just a few stanzas on a page,” she says. So, Sally began spending an hour each day during her daughter’s naptimes to write poems. In March of this year, a collection of 61 of her favorites were published in a brightly illustrated book titled, The Gumball Lottery: A Delicious Assortment of Rhymes. “It’s full of optimism, encouragement and humor, which frankly, the world needs a little more of these days,” she says with a smile. “When life lessons are conveyed in a fun and often funny way, kids will actually enjoy learning them. I like to say it’s like

‘broccoli cleverly hiding in cheese.’” BITE-SIZED WISDOM Although Sally recognizes that novels and chapter books are priceless, she points out the value of poetry, as well. “Sometimes you just want to take a few minutes and enjoy something bite-sized and sweet—kind of like gumballs!” The title poem, “The Gumball Lottery,” is one of her favorites in the book because of the life lesson it teaches. “Basically, a kiddo picks out a specific gumball in the machine and takes a chance (actually, multiple chances) to win the sweet prize,” she says. “But (like many things in life), it doesn’t go exactly as planned. However, there’s a lesson learned

19

during that process: ‘I guess in this game of hope and chance, there’s a lesson to be had — When you don’t get what you want, sometimes it’s not so bad. In fact, sometimes it’s even better,’” she recites. Another favorite poem is the first one in her book. Titled “Find Your THING,” it encourages readers to find their “thing,” their talent, their hobby, whatever it may be — to embrace it and do it well. “There’s a lesson in that for all of us, children and adults alike,” she says. A FAMILY EFFORT The mom-author not only wrote The Gumball Lottery for her own children, (Luke, 11; Anna, 9; 20 July/August 2019

Maggie, 4), but let them be a part of the writing process, too. “Before the book was published, I read the manuscript to them, getting their feedback and ideas,” she says. “My kids inspired so many of the poems in the book. If we had a funny conversation about unicorns or narwhals or sloths, I wrote a poem about it. If one of my kids got nervous about riding a giant roller coaster, I wrote a poem about it. If one of them said, ‘I love you more than pancakes,’ I wrote a poem about it. Now, it’s pretty priceless to read those poems with them and share my inspiration with them—and all the funny stories behind them.”

Sally Dollar, left, enlisted the help of her friend and neighbor Rorie Scroggins on illustrations for The Gumball Lottery.

It reinforced their decision six years ago to enroll both of their daughters at the school, a place where the focus on learning and passion displayed were immediately evident. “The environment at Hillsboro is unique in that it inspires curiosity, creativity and compassion among every person in the community,” Wendy says. “Students have so many opportunities to practice and experience what they are learning. convinced that passion is contagious among this community of lifelong learners.” Nestled on 30 acres off Elvira Road in Helena, The Hillsboro School Bober Lake Campus features a garden, woods and beautiful lake, which provide all kinds of unique opportunities for students, according to co-founder Dr. Melinda Bray. “For example, students help plan the garden each season and take care of it; they develop trails, and make markers to identify flowers and trees,” she says. “Additionally, they take care of two rabbits, and we have an apiary. With parents’ permission students can learn to take care of our bees. It truly is an idyllic place to wander, wonder and be.” The school uses a Montessori curriculum while

Students can volunteer in activities such as Cahaba River cleanup and monthly help at The Christian Service Mission. The school also offers Hands-On Hillsboro Enrichment Camps, which consist of one-week camps allowing students to focus on a specific topic including woodwork, or T-shirt designs. The camps are also opened to the community, including students that homeschool during three weeks in September and March, according to Bray. Additionally, there are four full-time teachers, one full-time teacher aide and three parttime teachers. Since attending the school, Poczatek’s two children, ages 10 and 12, have enjoyed the ability to learn while also being outside. “Our girls love nature, and the campus is a nature lover’s dream,” Poczatek said. “They spend so much time outdoors at school. They hike regularly with their class, work in the school garden, run, jog, walk on campus

That was a concern when I was thinking about him having to sit still in a traditional school.” Other factors for Ewing’s decision to enroll her child included class size and a more detailed focus on her son being able to excel at his own pace. with her son, which is something she appreciates when sending him to school each day. “It is like I am sending him to school and the people teaching him are family,” she says. “They are patient and knowledgeable, and they want my son to succeed. The kids are excited about learning and they can follow their own path to keep that fire going. There is no grade or age restriction to keep him from learning something he is ready for and interested in. There is no limit to how far he can go.” The school begins Spanish immersion at the toddler level, where time together with the teacher is spent only speaking in Spanish. also an important aspect at the school, where the school collaborates with a certified Suzuki piano teacher and Early Childhood Education (ECE) instructor who works with students across age groups. The school also has hands-on STEAM classes for elementary through high school students, which support science, art and math. Bray says the student-to-teacher ratio is intentionally low, allowing the children to be wellknown and understood by their teachers. The school schedule is a unique feature of the school. While the school meets 180 days, students go to school until the end of May, have six weeks off for the summer and return mid-July. There are also

three week breaks in September, December and March for the students to recharge. Poczatek says she has always felt like her children are truly known by their teachers, an aspect she has appreciated the most about the school. “We love how the adults in the community model respect each other whether they share identical or opposing beliefs,” Poczatek says. “The students are taught to practice respectful debate and conflict resolution even as preschoolers. Families support each other through joyful and painful times, and we are often on each other’s pick-up list. I often hear people describe a longing to find their tribe or village where they belong. That is what we found here at The Hillsboro School.” For more information about the school or tuition rates, visit thehillsboroschool.org, email admissions@thehillsboroschool.org or call (205) 864-7330.

Serving good coffee and food is of paramount importance to Cynthia Bertolone at her coffee shop, and understandably so. But creating a cozy place where locals can gather, unwind and connect is just as important to the Montevallo resident. “My vision is to unify the surrounding communities and start a tradition to gather friends and family here,” she says of C’s Cakes & Coffee House, which opened in January. “They can hang out, play board games, listen to music, eat tasty food, drink exceptional coffees and enjoy the outdoor patio in the cutest coffee house in all of Alabama.”

Cynthia, who also owns Cake Art in Pelham, says the community has welcomed the coffee shop with open arms and a steady stream of visitors since it opened. She wanted to open the business in the area, a college town, because she was presented with an opportunity she could not refuse. Now, she’s serving a lineup of specialty coffee, pastries, soups, salads and meals to go that people can’t refuse. “C’s Cakes & Coffee House is about creating smooth, tasty, specialty coffee and scrumptious cakes from our original location at Cake Art,” she

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

John Naro

Owner of Fat Johnny’s Comfort & Soul PHOTO BY KEITH MCCOY

As someone who’s been in the food service industry since he was a teenager, John Naro knows his way around the meatand-three restaurant concept. But putting his special touch on meat and vegetable staples is what Naro most enjoys as a chef. Now, he is serving up his Southern-style dishes at his new restaurant, Fat Johnny’s Comfort & Soul, in downtown Columbiana. Read on to find out just what to expect at the city’s newest lunch spot. What can people expect to find at Fat Johnny’s? Comfort and soul. “Come for the comfort, stay for the soul.” We really started thinking about the words comfort and soul. The two have really come together, and that’s our whole mission here: We want you to have comfort and soul. That’s why we’re here. SOMETHING OLD + SOMETHING NEW

Ashlee Werkmeister mixes vintage treasures with new pieces to create an eclectic-farmhouse style. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

Ashlee holds a photo of her and her husband, Jon, who is a technical sergeant in the Air Force.

When Ashlee Werkmeister was a child, her parents took her with them to estate sales and thrift stores, hunting for vintage treasures that held stories of their previous owners and locations. She didn’t care for the excursions back then. But as an adult, Ashlee can’t seem to get enough of these treasure hunts, the fruits of which end up in her Helena home. “Now, I love it,” she says. “I think it’s the history and the people behind the pieces that make me love pickin’ so much.” These vintage treasure finds also fuel her hobby of home decorating – something she relished as a child despite her distaste for browsing estate sales. She liked to rearrange her room and see how other people decorated. She took particular interest in her grandmother’s mid-century home, filled with everything from copper to vintage tea sets. “When I visit her house, it brings me back to being 5 years old baking oatmeal cookies with her in the kitchen,” Ashlee says. “My home is kind of like that, filled with frugal collections that I’ve found over the years.” Ashlee works in the wedding business and writes a DIY and home décor blog called Sweet Southern Oaks. When she’s not writing or pickin’ at local markets, Ashlee and her husband, Jon, a technical sergeant in the Air Force, likely have their sleeves

40 July/August 2019

rolled up to work on another home project. “We have lived in our house for a little over two years,” Ashlee says. “We have done quite a few updates to the house since we moved in and have many more projects to do in the future. The first thing we did was paint all of the dark brown walls to lighten up the rooms with soft grays and blues. The softer color palette helped to make the rooms feel larger and really pop. The power of paint is amazing because it can transform a space on a small budget.” They break their larger projects into phases to complete as their budget allows. Ashlee shares updates on her blog, detailing what she and Jon have done and how her followers can apply the same cost-effective concepts in their homes. “My focus is on authentic vintage pieces and decorating on a budget,” she says. “I’m drawn to anything ‘chippy,’ vintage and antiques – and I love to go pickin’ at yard sales and thrift stores to incorporate those finds into my décor. I’m always on the hunt for vintage jars, copper, architectural salvage and old books to add to my many collections. I want our home to be a warm and cozy space that feels like a safe haven, and for everyone that walks through our door to feel like they’re at home and to feel like family.”

Living Room The living room reflects Ashlee’s eclectic farmhouse style with its mixture of textures and character in her vintage finds, new pieces, family heirlooms and architectural salvage pieces, including an old stained glass window from an 1800s church that Ashlee found at Ben’s Antiques & Market in Georgia. “Just thinking about how many sermons and how many souls were saved in the very church that window hung over 100 years ago is fascinating to me,” she says. “I like the aesthetic of how every piece is different and unique in its own way, but still blends together.”

Kitchen The kitchen, along with the living room, is Ashlee’s favorite part of the house. “I feel like these two rooms are the heart of a home, and that’s where we spend most of our time,” she says. Last summer she and Jon painted the dark-brown kitchen cabinets white and updated the faucet. They are working on the second phase of the kitchen this summer to install a backsplash, new flooring and updated countertops. “I want this to feel like an industrial farmhouse, with whites and blacks and touches of aqua.”

Ashlee’s Office The built-ins in the room Ashlee uses as her office and as a sunroom were a major selling point for her and Jon.

Dining Room The light wall color continues into the dining room, a cozy space accessible from the kitchen and from her office, through a set of French doors.

The Healing of Horses Heather Whitley knows the power of horses for a wounded spirit, and now through Rusted Roof Barn she’s seeking to heal their wounds too. BY MELANIE PEEPLES | PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR

You can’t tell by looking at it, but down a winding road and just inside the gates of Oak Mountain State Park is a place where magic happens. To the naked eye it just looks like an old barn with a rusted roof, but this is a place that heals, a place that gives second chances. About a decade ago, Heather Whitley began boarding her horse at the Oak Mountain Boarding Stables. She grew up riding horses, though she says it’s more accurate to say she grew up being thrown from horses. (It started with cracking two vertebrae and a rib as a kid and moved on to a dislocated jaw and broken teeth.) Maybe it’s something inside her that just inspires a fiery spirit, or it could be that friends, spying a horse that seems a little crazy,

52 July/August 2019

would say, “Hey, Heather, ride THIS one!” At any rate, Heather had chosen to board her horse at the Oak Mountain stables because of its proximity to her family’s home in Homewood. She could be at the stable, saddled up and riding within 15 to 20 minutes. She and her husband owned a business in Homewood, but come evenings, with her children tucked safely at home, she could steal away for a bit and ride. Then, seven years ago, she lost her husband unexpectedly and could not stand to keep their business open, where they had worked side by side. It was too painful without him there. So, she went to the barn. “This was a way to get away from all the bad

stuff,” she says. So she rode. She saddled up and let the slow canter of time do its work. After a while, her husband’s good friend grew to become more than just a friend, and eventually he followed her out to the barn. He had never ridden before. “I guess he figured if he wanted to see me, he better come out here,” she says with a smile that makes her eyes sparkle. In time, they married, merging her two kids with his son from a previous marriage, and, of course, her horse. Through it all, she drove to Oak Mountain State Park and rode. Then she learned that the neighboring barn—a trail barn, where the general public can pay to ride—was going to close. She watched it disappear, the horses gone, leaving nothing but the empty stalls where once there had been so much life. She lamented the loss of a place where people who didn’t own a horse had the opportunity to spend time communing with nature, atop a horse. Perhaps she knew what riding can do for a wounded spirit, and she wanted to give some of that back. One day, she just decided that SHE could do it. SHE could manage the trail barn that was just sitting there, rusting. With

the encouragement of her friend, Amy Taylor, who also boarded her horse at the Oak Mountain Boarding Stables, she decided to do it. Heather would become the owner/operator, and Amy, the certified instructor, would be able to give riding lessons. Heather went home and announced her plan to her husband, Scott, who had no experience in running a barn, but nonetheless said sure. Next, Heather had to convince Oak Mountain State Park. She would need horses, and she proposed filling the empty stalls with horses that needed help.“Well, if we’re gonna redo this,” she thought, “we might as well give a horse a second chance.’” Oak Mountain loved the idea and said yes. That’s what most of the horses here are: rescues. These are horses that were starved or abused or otherwise mistreated and put up for sale. Heather and Amy would see ads online and just go see them. Sometimes owners told them straight up that if they 54 July/August 2019

didn’t buy the horse, it was going to be sold for meat. Along the way, The Rusted Barn has become a family affair. Scott left his previous career, and Heather’s daughter, Amelia, a 17-year-old high school senior, saddles horses and mends fences in her spare time. There have been a few surprises, too. Around two years ago, at 46, Heather was convinced she was going into menopause. It turned out to be a baby: Ella, whom they refer to as a barn baby because she spends so much time here. Heather’s oldest, Ethan, is taking a break from college to decide what he really wants to be, and in the meantime, has become their manny, giving Heather and Scott enough time and flexibility to truly get The Rusted Roof Barn off the ground. The stalls are filled with beautiful, strong horses, poking their heads out and snorting occasionally, as if they’re interjecting to the conversation regarding

how they got here. Looking at a “before” picture of an Arabian horse named Charisma you’ll see ribs you could count and a prominent spine. Today, he’s much more rounded, though Heather says he still has a way to go. He’s curious and is happy to have his face stroked. A brindled mare named Clementine has become Heather’s favorite. When she first brought Clementine home, Scott couldn’t get near her. “Scott couldn’t even touch her, even if he had all the food because the man before had beat her,” Heather says. “You can look at her and see the sadness in her eyes. I can identify with it. Everybody has to heal at their own rate.” Heather says she gave her time and patience. “I just let her be a horse for a little while. She got the routine. She saw horses coming and going and being ridden, and she figured it out.” Clementine has come so far, she’s even become a search and rescue horse. Heather has 20 horses now, each with his or her own story. Sometimes they are weary of her when she first meets them. Other times, they seem to know she’s going to save them. Mason, who was previously penned in a tiny stall and hardly had any room to move around, didn’t need any convincing when Heather showed up. “I had to get out of his way,” she says.

“He jumped on my trailer so fast because he was like, ‘Get me out of here!’ He was like, ‘Anywhere has to be better than where I’m at.’” Mason, Charisma, Clementine and the others are all doing well now and are either being ridden for trail rides or lessons or are still in training. Earning their keep is a necessity, as taking care of horses is expensive. Heather can’t keep any horse here who isn’t adding to the operation. But that does not mean her horses are forced to be ridden. Far from it. Heather has only had two horses who didn’t work out. One just didn’t like trail riding. He didn’t like different people getting on him all the time. “You could tell this didn’t make him happy,” Heather says. She didn’t think it was fair to make him do something he just couldn’t learn to like. So, she found him a home with a little girl who rides him as a show horse. And he’s winning. Another horse just did not like to be ridden at all. But he had long hair and liked being groomed, so she found a children’s camp for him where the children can brush him and braid his mane. And 56 July/August 2019

he’s happy. Heather is currently working on two beautiful blond Haflingers named Buttercup and Butterscotch, and she is not entirely convinced they both are going to make it. They are physically healthy now, but Buttercup bears emotional scars. “Somebody down the line did something just really awful to her,” Heather says. “She isn’t totally ready to forgive. Horses, typically, will forgive you. If you give them enough time, they will forgive you. They won’t forget. She has not totally forgiven.” But she IS improving. Buttercup actually lets Heather touch her now. Before, she could not stand it and would freeze like a statue. Above all, Heather understands the importance of patience. “It’s not a race. The goal here is to rehab them the best we can so that they’re not a danger to somebody, and they have a good life.” And she understands them too. “I think because I came from where I wanted to be free from pain, I give them time. And then, of course, I have a fabulous husband who lets me do this crazy stuff.”

BRAVING THE STORMS OF TIME The textile mill achieved about 45 years of steadily growing operations. However, after an April 18, 1953 tornado ripped through the community, the mill was shut down for almost a full year to make extensive repairs. The original water tower survived the storm, although it was decided to install more competitive, modern equipment elsewhere throughout the operation. Shortly thereafter, the mill and the entirety of the village property was purchased by J.W. Valentine Co., Inc. of New York. “The name of the business was changed and this time it became Silura Mills, Inc.,” Seales says. “The final name of the business was changed in January 1965 to Buck Creek Industries, Inc., when the operating facility and factory site were sold to Reeves Brothers, Inc., a New York Stock Exchange.”

HEALTH FOCUS:

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Presenting Sponsor

Children who are outside having fun in the sun or practicing sports may be too busy to pay attention to things like staying hydrated or knowing when to go for shade. When children are young, it’s up to the adults to watch out for when enough sun is enough. Heat illness follows a progression from mild to life-threatening.

Stages, Signs and Treatment of Heat Illness

Newsletter

Extended time in heat and humidity and lack of adequate fluids can cause heat illness. And, children, teens and the elderly (over age 65) are more sensitive to heat because their bodies don’t adjust as quickly to environmental changes as adults younger than age 65. Here’s how to recognize heat illness:

Type of Heat Illness

Cause

Signs/Symptoms

Heat cramps (mildest form)

uIntense exercise in high heat uPainful cramps or muscle spasms most common in legs

Flushed, moist skin

uStop activity and rest in a cool place uTake off extra clothing and apply cool cloths to skin uDrink fluids that contain sugar and salt uSlowly stretch cramped muscles

Heat exhaustion

uLoss of water and salt uExtreme heat and sweating without fluid and salt replacement

Same as above, plus: uHigh fever (over 100.4) uHeadache uNausea/vomiting uDiarrhea uWeakness/fatigue uAnxiety

Same treatment as above; if no improvement or fluids won’t stay down, go to the emergency department.

Heat stroke (life threatening)

Body is overwhelmed by excessive heat and doesn’t properly regulate the heat

Same as above, plus: uRapid heart rate uLack of appetite uConfusion or agitation uStupor or lethargy uSeizures

Treatment

Begin same treatment as above and call 911 or go to emergency department. In the meantime, place ice bags in armpit and groin area.

How to Avoid Heat Illness Follow several guidelines to avoid starting down the path of heat illness: uWatch the heat index - if over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, heat exposure is riskier. uUnderstand if your child’s health issues (including obesity) or medication make him or her 62 July/August 2019 Shelbychamber.org

more susceptible. uBeware of the need for extra hydration and breaks from the heat when wearing heavy clothing such as for football or band practice (if wearing heavy uniforms). uStay hydrated and encourage your children to drink fluids even if they don’t

think they’re thirsty. uDress in lightweight, lightly-colored clothing. uTake breaks from activity to cool off in air conditioning, with a cool bath or in a swimming pool. uTalk with coaches and/or camp counselors about policies regarding heat illness

prevention. Finally, remember to never, ever leave children in a closed vehicle, even for a short time. Inside car temperatures can increase by as much as 19 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. Closed vehicles can be lifethreatening.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY connecting with the Michigan State Alumni Group of Alabama to watch games in Birmingham. What does it mean to you to be the first coach of a new athletic program? It is an incredible honor to be chosen as the first coach ever. The university has put their trust in me to lay the foundation and build a new team. Coming from a school where the men’s swim team and three other sports were dropped, it means even more to me to be able to add opportunities for high school swimmers to continue their career in college. The best part about coaching is watching the University of Montevallo Head freshman grow from deer in headlights to seniors ready to take on the world. So, I set Swim Coach out to find the right student-athletes that not only will represent Montevallo in the PHOTO CONTRIBUTED pool but in the classroom and community. What are your goals for this first Few people have the chance to be season of #MontevalloSwim? the first head coach of a college’s new First thing I told every recruit is that for athletic program, but Aaron Mahaney me, family comes first. I want to create a is now a member of this select group. team that is an extension of our families. If you follow us on social media, you will Since being named the University of Montevallo’s head coach for the men’s hear a lot about joining our Falcon Swim Family. That is our top priority this and women’s swimming programs, Aaron has stayed busy with recruiting coming year to establishing that family. It is going to be a challenge bringing in 34 efforts and prep work for the Falcons’ young adults who have never met each inaugural season of competitive swimother to create something new, but they ming. We got a behind-the-scenes have already started to get to know one look at the excitement Aaron has and another. After that, we will be been a part of since joining the UM focusing on getting the job done in the family. classroom and starting college on the right foot. As far as swimming, the What have you been up to since you athletes are ready to get to work and are were named UM’s first head coach of looking to come out of the gates swinging the men’s and women’s swimming for the fences. A big goal would be to have programs? everyone achieve a best time on our way As soon as I got to Alabama, I hit the to making our mark on the New South ground running. The first thing I did was Intercollegiate Swim Conference. buy a beautiful home in Montevallo, followed quickly by spreading the word What do you want fans to know about about the new program. In doing so we the program? were able to recruit 34 student-athletes For the fans, it is an exciting time here from around the country. When not at Montevallo as the athletic department, working I have enjoyed kayaking the University and town continue to grow and Coosa River, hiking Oak Mountain and expand with the addition of a new swim

team. They are always welcome at our meets and can watch us online or follow us on social media @MontevalloSwim. Go Falcons! What has competitive swimming given to you over the years? How many pages do I have? As a swimmer it taught me how to use inviolable skills such as goal setting, time management, discipline, belief in myself and more. In college being a part of a team provided me a family away from home. Beyond that I have been fortunate enough to have traveled the country and the world meeting a wide range of incredible people whom I call friends because of swimming. What advice do you give to your student-athletes? With a positive attitude, willingness to learn with an open mind and hard work, there is nothing you cannot achieve. And remember to enjoy the moment and have fun. What parts of Montevallo stood out to you when you first visited the city and campus? During the drive from the airport passing the old farms reminded me of my grandfather’s farm growing up. Once in Montevallo it gave me a small-town America feel with southern charm. I’m sure that made me sound like a yankee, but it is true. When arriving at the university I was surprised to find such a beautiful campus hidden away and like most, once you see campus you fall in love with the old brick buildings and streets with the full tree canopy. What do you love about Shelby County? Admittedly, outside of Montevallo I still have a lot to explore. Whether it’s going to a dinner party at the Fox and Pheasant B&B, spending time in Oak Mountain, I look forward to learning more about my new home and enjoying all that Shelby County has to offer.
