A Quarantine Wedding

McKenzie Williams, pictured with her mom, married in her parents’ Chelsea home, where she just so happened to first meet her groom too. Photo by Cru Photo Design by Connor Martin-Lively

When I first walked into the doors of Oak Mountain High School in the fall of 2000—only the second year the school was open—I had no idea of the road that lay ahead. I didn’t know that Faye Walls’ AP U.S. History lectures would ignite a passion that led me to a degree in history that, more than anything, taught me to write well and ask good questions. I didn’t know that yearbook conferences and competitions with Melissa Dixon and Cindy Cruce (yes, we were fiercely competitive with our yearbook!) coupled with the love of Latin grammar and vocabulary Theresa Boody instilled in me would be the foundation what made me want to go to journalism school at the University of Missouri. I didn’t know that my dreams of working for a national magazine would morph into a sweeter reality of telling the stories of those who live in the neighborhoods around me, and that they’d take me back to majestic views of Double Oak Mountain I didn’t appreciate until I lived out of state and the winding county roads I didn’t realize felt like home until I returned to them in my 20s. My title as editor of Shelby Living might be new, but I am no stranger to Shelby living. And I couldn’t be more delighted that two decades later I’m back sharing the stories of the place that first inspired my own story. Another part of the journey I definitely didn’t see coming was that the pandemic we’ve all been living in since mid-March—the one that shaped the pages that lie ahead in this issue. Alexandra Ditoro looked at what dance studios and teams looked like in the COVID-19 quarantine, right down to an outdoor recital Kathryn Bell photographed for us. Elsewhere in this issue, Lindsay Dyess shares about virtual concerts happening at the Shelby County Arts Council, I got to capture in words how the owners of Burnette Farms Market in Pelham started carrying flour and yeast when those items were scarce in grocery stores, and you’ll find photos of virtual violin lessons in our story on Alabaster City Schools’ strings program. If you want to read something extra sweet, check out our account of a back porch wedding that just so happened to take place in the home where the bride and groom first met—stunning photos and all. Speaking of visually appealing stories, be sure to read about Scott Vaughn Owen’s artwork, and the winners of our annual Best of the Best contest our readers voted for too. Thanks for reading, and feel free to reach out to me anytime and share stories you’d like to see in our future issues! I’m excited to curate them in the many pages to come.

Second Chance Dance Helena High School’s prom might not have happened this spring as planned, but a second chance came June 5 at Helena Hollow. There was a dance floor of course, along with golf cart shuttle, cornhole boards, a digital photo booth,

petting zoo, snacks, and Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. To top off the 2020 pandemic theme, attendees were given a Helena Hollow koozie, pop socket and roll of toilet tissue as favors in partnership with Glitz and Gowns.

Heard of Little Free Library? Well now there’s a Little Free Pantry in Alabaster at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in addition to one at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Montevallo that inspired it. Similar to the library concept, anyone who wishes to donate food can place non-perishables in the Little Free Pantry, and anyone who needs food can take what they need, free of charge and with no strings attached.

I SAW THE SIGN

Scott Vaughn Owen recounts his journey into the sign industry and contemporary art. BY LINDSAY SCHLUNTZ PHOTOS BY MARY TWEEDY ShelbyLiving.com

When Scott Vaughn Owen was growing up in Columbiana, art education wasn’t a part of his school day. Now at age 58, he recognizes how lucky he was that his mother saw his natural artistic talent back then. “I had an infatuation from the time I was little bitty with lettering, and she encouraged it,” he says. “Like, for birthdays, I’d get drawing paper and stuff.” By the time her son was 12, Betty Owen had connected him with an older gentleman who painted signs on the side. Mr. George Starcher visited businesses and created window splashes. “All the stores in downtown Montevallo would put designs on their front windows to welcome the college students back,” Scott recalls. “He would push his wheelbarrow through downtown and paint on all those windows.” Scott spent weekends following him from window

to window. “He’d show me how he was lettering signs–way before computers,” Scott says. “He’d tell me about his career and show me how the process worked... That encouragement as a child made me realize there was something there for me.” Scott went on to attend college at the University of Montevallo and, not surprisingly, took art classes since he knew he could draw. When he ran out of money trying to pay his own way through school, he decided to look for employment at a sign company in Birmingham. He got hired to sweep the floors, but it was a blessing in disguise for Scott. “Those four months, I looked over the shoulders of professional sign artists,” he recollected. “They showed me how to use the right brushes, and I’d come home in the afternoons and I’d practice until I felt confident branching out on my own.” And lo and behold at age 20, Scott started a sign

Scott started his career by working in the sign business.

business out of the back of his car. “I’d go to school and spend the rest of the day lettering people’s trucks and windows,” he recalls. “Eventually, I was bankrolling my tuition, my apartment, had cars and was doing all this on the side!” Scott says he’s grateful he was young enough to understand technology was going to be a major factor in the sign industry. In the mid-80s, he went to Oklahoma to participate in the beta-testing of one of the very first vinyl cutting machines ever made. He knew he had to have one, so he made a trip to the bank to borrow money for one. It ended up being a quality investment. Case in point: when he received a call from one of the contractors building the Galleria in Hoover. “I cut out every vinyl letter that went in the Galleria!” he says, shaking his head. “I was just this 25-year-old

guy, but I helped usher in what everyone now thinks is the common way to do signs–way back in the ’80s!” By 2008, the big development boom ended, and Scott found himself sitting still for the first time in a long time. So he picked up a pencil and started to draw again. Today he’s a contemporary artist, sign maker, lettering guru and graphics artist—what he considers a fantastic blend of artistic endeavors all based in his studio in Columbiana. If you press him to pick what’s most interesting to him these days, he will tell you it’s his contemporary work. “It is of me, for me,” he says. “It’s simply not about the money. It’s about the fact that I was given a gift or ability to do something and, by George, I’m just going to do it!” But of the thousands of projects he’s built over ShelbyLiving.com

the years, the artist can’t pick just one to be the most proud of. “They’re like children, birthed through my brain and I appreciate them for what they are,” he responds when we asked about it. At this point in his artistic journey, he wants to share what he knows too. “The lettering skills are especially important to share,” he says. “These skill sets and techniques that we’ve used in this craft over the last thousands of years all over the world are going by the wayside because technology is so much simpler and easier to do.” He is especially grateful for the mentors he’s had and for his family. His mother started fanning the flames of his artistic passion, and his wife, Taylor, kept it burning. “She’s the reason that the contemporary artwork exists,” he says. “She gets the fact that art is part of who I am, not just a job.”

He’s also valued the involvement of his sons, Parker and JohnThomas, and his brother Frank, and Frank’s wife, Letty, as great supporters and helpers. “I’ve been a lucky fellow in a lot of different ways. I sure can’t complain. “You never know the difference you might make in someone else’s life. Nobody is an island. The encouragement I’ve gotten from everyone else is a big deal.”

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

TIME FOR A VIRTUAL CONCERT

The Artist Member and Pottery Collective exhibit will kick off the Shelby County Arts Council’s summer programming. BY LINDSAY DYESS PHOTO BY VIDEOVISIONS/MEDIA MARKETING Although many peoples’ lives have drastically changed over the last few months, the Shelby County Arts Council has remained determined to keep the arts alive in Shelby County! The SCAC embraced the technology of livestreams and online learning as we moved toward our temporary new normal. Although music venues have been closed, that doesn’t mean the music stops! With the help of our friends from Video Visions Media Marketing, the SCAC has been able to share performances from some of the most talented regional musicians. We have been able to bring elevated livestreamed performances directly to the comfort of your home. These performances are simulcast to the Shelby County Arts Council’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. A few of the livestreamed performances to date have been the 2blu Duo, a Led Zeppelin tribute show, the Byron Thomas Duo, Three on a String, Cam Spinks and many more great acts. A virtual tip jar is also available to show some extra support to the musicians or a local charity.

With the return of small music and art classes in June, the SCAC is taking measures to keep safe while doing our best to support the arts. The Kid’s Fine Art Camps are still scheduled for the weeks of July 6-10 (Week I-ages 5-8) and July 13-17 (Week II-ages 9-12). There are limited spaces available for these camps. Please visit our website for info and camp registration. July will also host the opening for the annual Fine Folk Art Gallery Exhibit on Thursday, July 23. The gallery show features the work of regional and local folk artists who bend the rules of traditional fine art with their unique homegrown styles. Visit shelbycountyartscouncil.com or follow the SCAC on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram (@shelby_county_arts) for the latest news and updates about events and classes. We are working to keep people safe and inspired during these uncertain times. Don’t forget to join us Thursday evenings on YouTube and Facebook for a livestreamed music performance, and if you’re looking for more inspiration, check out a few music and art tutorials from our SCAC instructors free of charge on our YouTube channel.

Black Voices with Alabama Ties Recommendations from

Our Editorial Staff

As protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis took place at the start of the summer, books about race relations and the black experience in America started to sell out at local bookstores and national online retailers alike. Likewise, librarians and bookstore owners in our community are great resources for recommending reads that speak to these topics. As one more starting point in those conversations, here’s a list of titles by black authors (and one illustrator), all set in our state. Each comes recommended by our editorial staff, who have found that words and pictures that take place closer to the place you call home have all the more power to shape how you see the world around you and respond accordingly.

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption

By Bryan Stevenson There’s a reason Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times said Stevenson “may, indeed, be America’s Mandela.” In his book, Stevenson recounts his years as a young lawyer founding Montgomery-based Equal Justice Initiative to defend the wrongly condemned in the farthest reaches of the criminal justice system—many of them on Alabama’s death row—and how it transformed his understanding of mercy and justice. There’s also a young adult version available and a 2019 film by the same title.

Homegoing

By Yaa Gyasi This novel follows the parallel paths of two sisters from Ghana in the eighteenth century and their descendants through eight generations, illuminating how oppression spills through from generation to generation and creates systemic problems. Latter chapters take us to a cotton plantation in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, among other settings, not far from where Gyasi, a Ghana native, was raised in Huntsville.

Barracoon

By Zora Neale Hurston We have a new mural across from the Pizitz Food Hall to thank for introducing us to Cudjo Lewis. Back in 1931, Zora Neale Hurston interviewed him in Plateau, Alabama, a community 3 miles from Mobile that he and other former slaves had founded. At the time, the 89-year-old was the only living person who had been transported from Africa to America as a slave. In this volume, Hurston, an Alabama native herself best known for writing Their Eyes Were Watching God, captures his story and the tragedy of slavery.

Let the Children March

By Monica Clark-Robinson & Frank Morrison “I couldn’t play on the same playground as the white kids. I couldn’t go to their schools. I couldn’t drink from their water fountains. There were so many things I couldn’t do.” So begins this children’s book account of the thousands of African American children who marched in Birmingham for their civil rights after hearing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speak in 1963. Frank Morrison’s emotive oil-on-canvas paintings that are paired with Clark-Robinson’s poetic words earned this book a Coretta Scott King Honor Award for Illustration in 2019.

Gone Crazy in Alabama

By Rita Williams-Garcia In this book for middle grades, Delphine, Vonetta and Fern travel to Alabama one summer in the 1960s to visit their grandmother, Big Ma, and her mother, Ma Charles, and uncover family history and bonds along the way. This is the third book in a trilogy, so be sure to start with the first, One Crazy Summer, to see how these sisters visit kin all over the nation and discover their own strength along the way.

How a strings program is teaching Alabaster City Schools students far more than how to use a bow. BY ELIZABETH FRANKLIN-BALCH PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

Kristina Handler believes in the value of music. “It teaches you that you can achieve what seems impossible, as long as you persist and work at it,” she says. “This gives the children an incredibly special means to express and communicate.” And as Alabaster City Schools (ACS) Strings Program director and instructor, she’s certainly seen it firsthand. ACS is unique in that it offers a strings music education program directly through its schools. The after-school lessons are offered at no cost in partnership with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Three sets of 40 violins are evenly distributed among three schools including Creek View Elementary, Meadow View Elementary and the Intermediate School. Alabaster City Schools also

have cello and bass string players who study privately but participate in ACS group events, and three viola players participate with the ACS violinists. Ten-year-old Jayden Daza, one of the ACS strings program students, can certainly attest to what his teachers claim. “I really like violin because it made me smarter,” he says. “I also like how all of the notes and finger movements blend together to make something amazing. It’s like magic. Mrs. Kris is one of the main reasons that I stick with it.” Third grader Sidnee McCorkel was first exposed to the violin during a general music class at Creek View Elementary that all 700 third graders in the school system participate in for six weeks. “That’s what made (Sidnee) want to learn to play the violin,” her mother Jaime says. “She is doing lessons on Tuesdays

Creek View Elementary student Sidnee McCorkel, right, takes violin lessons from Kristina Handler online during the COVID-19 quarantine.

“Music and violin is a friend that can transport you, rescue you from where you are.” -Kristina Handler with Miss Kris from home now. She already has four lessons lined up.” But what these students are doing is certainly not easy, Handler says. “It teaches lessons in selfdiscipline, organization, honesty with yourself and self-examination,” she says, also noting its benefits especially this spring and summer. “For anyone with a violin in this time of staying home in quarantine, they too can fill this secluded world with music. Music and violin is a friend that can transport you, rescue you from where you are.” But during the normal school year, Handler teaches all ages. On Mondays she has two different violin classes going at the same time, one beginner and one advanced. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, she teaches the students at the middle school, and on Wednesdays and Fridays, she works with intermediate level students in the fourth and fifth grades. Ola Lutfi, as a sophomore at Thompson High School, plays cello and bass both with the high school

programs and younger students on occasion. “The music we play is a little hard but it definitely is for our level,” she says. In each moment of teaching, Handler sees how it enhances her students’ brains. “It exercises both sides of the brain,” she explains. “It uses both very small muscles to larger ones in your back and arms. Apart from the physical act of making sound, there’s all the information in the music to process and translate, maintain all at one time.” Handler likes using some of the Suzuki method rhythms but also emphasizes musical literacy. “I emphasize note reading over memorization,” she says. “Also, I am trying to find the fastest and most efficient way to teach these kids. Keeping them all inspired and going is tricky. It’s just as challenging as playing the violin itself!” Dr. Wayne Vickers, superintendent of Alabaster City Schools, has worked alongside others to get the strings program into the curriculum. “We feel that if every child has the opportunity to connect, they will ShelbyLiving.com

MEET THE TEACHER Kristina Handler began playing violin when she was 8 years old because someone came into her school and offered lessons. By the time she was a junior in high school, she was teaching violin and viola, and holding recitals her my mom’s house. Now, she has now been teaching for more than 30 years. Along the way she’s also performed in Russia, Romania and France, along with the Canton, Akron, West Virginia and Wheeling W.V. Symphonies, but perhaps most memorable is the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s 2017 performance in Carnegie Hall. Her husband, David, is also a violinist and a member of the Alabama Symphony. But that’s not all—she’s also a writer and illustrator and dreams of setting one of her stories to music with a narrator on stage, with the illustrations on a big screen above the orchestra. “Right now, I have three orchestras and a composer interested in the project, but there’s a lot to still figure out,” she says. “The whole project ties in with my teaching, as it would be an educational program about the symphony orchestra’s instruments.”

be ready and well-rounded … we strive to support the three As: academics, athletics and arts,” Vickers says. “We hope to grow this (strings) program.” ACS Board Member Dr. John Myrick, a professional musician and university professor, also worked with key district staff to get a government arts grant for the school system to help cover the costs and the district’s program, as well as its Bosendorfer Concert Grand 290 Imperial piano, one of the very largest grand pianos manufactured anywhere in the world that is hand crafted in Austria delete with 97 keys. The system purchased it through Ellis Piano. Not only that but Myrick was key in choosing Handler for her position. In addition to Handler, Patricia Pilon teaches cello and Ron Alexander teaches bass. “Everyone (in the 22 July/August 2020

school system) has been extremely helpful to me thus far,” Pilon says. “I cannot tell you how many teachers and administrators have asked how they could help me. We are all excited to build this program.” Two years into the strings program, Handler expects it to continue to grow. Her goal in all of it is to teach violin to all ACS students that want to learn, bring them together in various combinations of small to large ensembles, and eventually create the Thompson High School Symphony Orchestra. And in all of it, she’s helping students learn that they can achieve what seems impossible. Parents who would like more general information on the strings program with Alabaster City Schools can contact the ACS Board of Education at 205-6638400.

Helena Middle School Science Teacher, Dance Team Coach & Teacher of the Year PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

What do you love about teaching? What I love about teaching middle school is you get to play a small role in those kids’ lives when they are trying to figure out who they want to be and what sparks their curiosity the most. With life sciences, you can see what’s happening to plants outside, you can see your skin and your chill bumps, you can see parts of the cell in a microscope. What’s been good about being back in the area? When I moved back, I knew I wanted to teach in the Shelby County Schools system. I had a great experience myself and felt very prepared for college at Auburn, and I love how they get kids prepared and how professional and nurturing they are. When I started at Helena Middle School, I really felt like I was home. The unwavering support they give teachers helped with that transition, and they outpour love and support and resources.

24 July/August 2020

Anna McEntire’s passion overflows as she talks about teaching, and it’s no wonder she was named the Shelby County School’s Middle School Teacher of the Year. “I remember feeling insecure and shy in middle school, and it’s neat to see (my students) become more confident,” she says. “I tell my kids their voice matters.” Her story starts growing up in Oak Mountain schools (she graduated from OMHS in 2006) and has now taken her to Helena Middle School with a faculty she considers “one huge closeknit family.” We chatted with her about what she’s missed most in quarantine and how her own school years inspire what she does today. talking about it since. It helped me see I am good at something. I remember having a hard day at school, and once I left practice the day had turned around. My favorite thing about coaching is mentoring and helping these girls. I love building them up so they are confident to make right decisions, and I set high expectations for my students to be leaders in all their interactions. It’s hard in middle school. What were some highs and lows of teaching in quarantine? The main challenge is the lack of connectedness and being able to tell if a concept is truly mastered. There’s a lot to telling if a student is getting what you are teaching with their body language and nonverbal clues. On the positive side, I saw the kids really liked the flexible scheduling and rose to that challenge with independence. They are able to problem solve and troubleshoot issues on their own. Many of my students would want to get their assignments completed right when they were posted so they could free up their time for the rest of the week, and they saw that it is valuable to think about the future. It’s very mature. We also learned about resources to make our classrooms more engaging.

Mike Burnette has lost his farmer’s tan these days, but he draws on his years in the field as he picks out produce from the Finley Avenue market for his family’s market in Pelham. To select something like sweet potatoes, he says, you have to know about the soil and the rain. In a drought everything will be smaller and more flavorful. If there’s been a lot of rain, fruits and vegetables are bigger and less flavorful. “Ninety-nine out of 100 people buy with their eyes, not their mouth,” he says. “But nine times of out 10 the smaller peach is sweeter.” The key for him is an almost innate understanding of what produce looks like, naturally. “I know what a tomato looks like on a plant, I know what beans look like on a vine, I know what a peach looks like when you pick it off a tree,” he says. “When people come to see our produce, they see a difference.” And that’s just what you’ll see at Burnette Farms

Market on Helena Road in Pelham. When we visited in May to write this article, Chilton County peaches and strawberries fresh from their family’s fourthgeneration farm were ripe for the picking, and squash, cucumbers, zucchini and more were coming right behind them. In the winter, local produce is limited to staples like potatoes and onions, so they bring in more outside vendors’ crops. The family has also learned convenience is key to their shoppers, so they sell corn already shucked and squash already cut up—whatever will get it to the dinner table quickly while staying fresh. Surrounding the produce sit a selection of jarred goods, McEwen & Sons grits and even pickled peaches, which the Burnettes say no one makes like they used to. “I will tell you it’s better than something you can get at the grocery store but not as good as your mom of grandmom will make it,” Mike says of

their jarred and packaged food items. Mike traces his family farm’s roots back to when his granddaddy first came to Chilton County to help construct the Lay Lake dam and ended up settling onto 100 acres of land in Thorsby. Back then they mainly grew collard and turnips greens, sweet potatoes and field corn—a starchier corn used to feed livestock. He taught his son to harvest just as he did, and his son taught Mike, and Mike taught his son Jared, who now runs the farm while the rest of the family is the backbone of daily business at the market in Pelham. For decades the farm had exclusively sold to wholesalers, but then came Pepper Place Farmer’s Market in downtown Birmingham two decades ago. Each week, the Burnette family would bring fresh fruits and vegetables up to sell, and with that they

learned about the increasing popularity of crops like peaches and squash in the Birmingham area. But as the market got more competitive with more and more vendors, the family started to think about their own venture. That’s when the market in Pelham was born in 2017. “Mike would always say, ‘I wish we had a Pepper Place every day,’ and this is our Pepper Place every day,” Mike’s wife Mary Charles says. The market is a family affair, with their daughter Jenny running the restaurant in it she dreamed up and Mary Charles involved in all sorts of operations. One of Mike’s many other roles draws from growing up with hand-turned ice cream. “Vanilla and peach were all we ever had, and the only time we had peach was in the summertime,” he says. “I can only remember having chocolate and strawberry once or ShelbyLiving.com

27

twice.” But not as his market. You name an ice cream flavor, and he’ll make it: cantaloupe, banana pudding, buttermilk, even dill pickle and silver queen corn. “I put the raw corn straight in the machine,” he says of the last one. “It was a good seller.” You’ll find staples like vanilla, peach (any time of year since they freeze the summer crop), strawberry and chocolate too that you can get in a cone or cup or take home in a pint, half pint or quart, along with Mike’s craziest flavor. “I wanted a real hot ice cream, like places that have real hot chicken wings,” he says. “I finally found the right ingredients, and a small amount it can hurt you. I have only found two people who could eat a whole serving of it, and one of them took 30 minutes and he was sweating.” Speaking of ice cream, you can also pair the flavors with the markets’ cobblers, which Mike 28 July/August 2020

makes too. Peach and blackberry are their specialties. In the restaurant area where it’s served, some days you’ll find fried pork chops or fried chicken tenders for lunch, and on the days where they want business to pick up, they put chicken and dressing on the menu, made just like Mike’s mom, Jenny’s Mamaw, did it. In the summer they cook up squash and zucchini from the market, and you’ll also find their new green tomato casserole and their staple peas, beans and sweet potato casserole. During the COVID-19 quarantine the restaurant had to temporarily shut down, but the Burnettes quickly found their foot traffic for the market itself doubled as people were trying to stay out of the grocery stores just as spring produce was coming in. The family also saw that staple items like flour and yeast were hard to come by, so they stocked up on those for customers too. With extra time on their

hands at home, more customers were asking questions about how to cook the produce, and they were selling more of the produce boxes with assorted items they sell for $25. “We just walked by faith,” Mary Charles says of a season they’ll certainly never forget. We can’t make any predictions on just what the rest of 2020 will bring. But like usual when colder temperatures hit this fall, there should be pumpkins

and Christmas trees at the market, and then come spring, you’ll find ferns and flowers for sale. But for now, peaches are king, coming straight up from the family farm where Mike learned his trade. Burnette Farms Market is located at 8551 Helena Road in Pelham and open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Learn more at burnettefarmsmarket.com or reach them at 205-730-9170 ShelbyLiving.com

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

John Rumore

Cinnaholic Owner + Operator PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

When a Berkeley, California, couple started a cinnamon roll bakery, they were sure to market the rolls as being made from scratch and gourmet before they mentioned they were dairy- and egg-free. But don’t worry, most of their customers can’t taste that it’s anything other than delicious. A few years and Shark Tank episodes later, longtime Hoover resident John Rumore is bringing the Cinnaholic concept to Alabama after he and his wife, Vallee, saw its success in Atlanta and Knoxville. It’s set to open in The Village at Lee Branch on Highway 280 next to Moe’s in the former Southern Spoiled Boutique space. John says to check their Facebook page for updates on their exact opening date this summer, but in the meantime we chatted with him to get a menu preview. How did the Cinnaholic concept get started? It was started in Berkeley, California, by Shannon and Florian Radke. They worked on perfecting the cinnamon roll recipe for at least a year and opened a location in 2010. They went on Shark Tank in 2014, and from there they started franchising. It’s taken off since then, and we are at around 40 locations right now with more under development. How did you come to bring the concept to Alabama? Both my father Duke Rumore and uncle Joe Rumore were in the radio business in the ’50s and ’60s, and I attribute a lot of my work ethic and drive to them. My dad would go to the station at 6 a.m. and sold his commercials and everything. Then he had four Rumore’s Buggy Bath car washes on top of it that my brother and I ran. We sold the last one in 2018 and started looking at franchises. We found that Cinnaholic is family-oriented, and they 30 July/August 2020

want the customer to feel like family when they come in. Their products are all made from scratch and are dairy-free, egg-free and cholesterol-free, so they are great for people who have dietary restrictions. It looked like it would be a hit here. Tell us more about these cinnamon rolls. Most of the customers who come in don’t realize the cinnamon roll is dairyfree because it’s a great tasting product. You get to choose from 20 different icings and 20 different toppings to customize it—all made from scratch. We make the pie crumbs and edible cookie dough inhouse, and some of the other topping options are strawberries, blueberries, apples, bananas, chocolate chips and a fudge-style brownie crumbled up. When it comes to icings, there’s strawberry, vanilla, cream cheese, orange cream, Amaretto, caramel and others. Or you can buy cookie dough and put toppings on it too. All the stores source their coffee locally, and we are proud to partner up with Baba Java in Hoover to serve their product. We have an

espresso machine ordered, and we’ll do iced coffee. What do you recommend ordering? Our number one seller is The Cookie Monster with cream cheese icing, homemade cookie dough, chocolate chips and chocolate sauce. My favorite is Mamaw’s Pecan Pie. It was developed by the Knoxville store and has maple frosting, fresh pecans, homemade pie crumbs and caramel sauce. The Knoxville location has actually held the No. 2 spot for volume and sales after the Berkeley store. Do you cater? Our catering has gone over really well for bridal showers and weddings. We can setup a DIY bar, so you choose your own icings and toppings. We make a baby bun that’s a smaller version of our regular roll for catering. We also cater cookies and brownies, and we make a cinnacake where several cinnamon rolls are baked into a cake and topped with any toppings you like.

HOME

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

A back porch setting centered McKenzie Williams and Brent Whitfield’s quarantine wedding on what mattered most. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS BY CRU PHOTO ShelbyLiving.com

T

The house on Highway 32 had always caught Brent Whitfield’s eye. For nearly a decade as he made service calls for AT&T near where he’d grown up in Chelsea, he’d been enamored by the home’s lines, and its modern design clad in rustic wood. The first time his job took him on its wooded property he was more than happy to see it up close, but little did he know the significance the place would soon take on in his life. When Brent came over to tell the homeowner he was finished with the job, they started to chat right inside the front door of the house. It was there that he immediately noticed the owner’s daughter McKenzie sitting on a chair a few feet away. Thirty minutes of conversation with the whole Williams family later, he left a business card with the owner. Afterward McKenzie found the card and sent a

32 July/August 2020

text message to Brent. She’d enjoyed talking to him. Perhaps they could continue the conversation over coffee? And so they did. Before too long McKenzie moved back home from Mississippi, where she had gone to college and had been living, and following their engagement, they were making plans for around 200 guests to join them as they wed overlooking a canyon in Albertville, Alabama. And then came the coronavirus, encroaching on their May 24 wedding date. A few weeks into quarantine, the couple realized their original plans were no longer feasible to keep their friends and family safe and started looking at a Plan B. The problem was location. No churches were allowing anyone inside, and parks were closed. They toyed with the idea of getting married at a

Brent Whitfield and McKenzie Williams married in her parents’ home in Chelsea where they first met.

“We were truly able to relish every moment and laugh. It stripped away anything that can be distracting, and it was about our ceremony and commitment to one another.” -McKenzie Williams Whitfield family friend’s lake house. And then what might seem obvious dawned on them: Why not marry at the home where they first met? And if they were simplifying their plans, they figured why wait? So they checked on their photographers Nathan and Amber Crumptons’ availability and moved their date up to April 18— only two weeks from when they set it. “With all the other uncertainty, why would we put it off longer?” McKenzie says. “We could go ahead and start our lives together.” A self-proclaimed hard core do-er and Enneagram Type 3, McKenzie set out to make her revised wedding to-do list and check it off—quickly. Brent wasn’t able to get a tux or a suit in time, so they

ordered his wedding attire online from Banana Republic. McKenzie, though, was able to have her dress fitted as planned Diane’s Formal Affair. A family friend, Annette Turner, who had planned to make their dulce de leche wedding cake said she could scale it down, and they got Taziki’s to cater for the 12 guests. McKenzie recruited a friend from growing up who does floral work, Rebecca Dodd, to make her bouquet and find flowers top the cake. “I told her the colors I wanted, but barely anything was available,” McKenzie recalls. “She said, ‘How about succulents for the cake?’ At that point I said, ‘Let’s use whatever you can get.’” And in the end, the floral touches were just as beautiful as McKenzie ShelbyLiving.com

had imagined, accompanied by some of her parents’ plants. “All of our community rallied together to make it happen,” McKenzie says. The day before their intimate wedding McKenzie, Brent and their parents gathered the string lights they bought off Amazon and white candles they’d found at Walmart (TJ Maxx, Hobby Lobby and Michael’s were all still closed), along with fabric a family friend had from their daughter’s wedding and set to transforming a back porch into an intimate wedding venue, using pieces of McKenzie’s parents’ porch sectional to form an aisle. A friend did the calligraphy on a chalkboard sign at the entrance to the house they setup with antiques from McKenzie’s parents’ house, just as they’d planned for their Albertville ceremony. By the time they’d finished setting up, they were all still in sweat pants and leggings for the rehearsal—fitting quarantine attire, after all. “It was 34 July/August 2020

such a whirlwind,” McKenzie says. The wedding day itself started nearly nothing as originally planned. McKenzie kicked off the day with a set of tears talking to her grandmother on the phone—a sweet moment she’ll always remember. A makeup artist wasn’t able to come, so McKenzie recruited the woman who had done her makeup for all the other formal events in her life: her mom. Soon after their job was done, her bridesmaids were on Zoom for a first look at the bride and to pray together, and they surprised her by wearing their bridesmaid dresses on the call. McKenzie’s brother wasn’t able to travel with his family—including the flower girl and ring bearer— to marry them as planned, but Brent’s dad, an ordained minister, stepped in instead. In the end, Brent says the most challenging part of the day was when he saw his bride walk down the aisle and not “losing it” crying as their friends and extended

family watched the ceremony on Facebook live. For photos the couple posed in the house’s woodpaneled master bedroom and outside in front of garage doors—spots they never would have picked out but that in the end looked a lot like the rustic venue they’d originally booked. They even took a few with McKenzie sitting in the chair by the front door where she’d been when Brent first saw her. “We really feel like the Lord laid it in our laps to meet one another in that way,” McKenzie says. “We were able to shave a sweet moment back where it all started.“ After the ceremony, the newly-joined family— both sets of parents, and Brent’s sister, brother-inlaw and their five kids—headed inside and spent time together and laughed around the kitchen table with the new Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield. In the end, it was nothing they’d originally planned, but more sweet and intimate than they could have imagined. “The biggest thing was we wanted to savor the whole day,” McKenzie says. “There wasn’t an agenda. We were truly able to relish every moment and laugh. It stripped away anything that can be distracting, and it was about our ceremony and commitment to one another.” When we talked to the couple in May, they had a delayed reception on the calendar in Albertville in

September, but those plans were still up the air based on how COVID-19 plays out. They hadn’t been able to honeymoon in Mexico as they’d originally planned but were hoping to get a trip on the books soon, especially since they only had four days off for the wedding before returning to work, Brent with AT&T and McKenzie at a physical therapy clinic and as a dance instructor. But what they knew for sure was that the day they’d committed to spend their lives together was one they’d never forget in the best way.

Just Keep

Dancing When in quarantine, the (dance) beat went on. It just looked a bit different than usual. By Alexandra Ditoro | Photos by Kathryn Bell As Alabama began to close schools on March 13, much of the state was concerned about how training for the college and high school football seasons would continue. But they weren’t the only ones. Here in Shelby County the dance community was concerned about their training during the COVID-19 quarantine, too. With dance studio doors closed and in-person training suspended, coaches and teachers had to get creative with ways to keep their kids moving. And even once these closures began to end, in-person classes had to put proper safety measures in place to protect students and teachers. At schools, dance team tryouts got postponed to the summer, but training went on. Thompson High School’s dance coach Zandra Morris began posting dance skills and workout plans to help THS dancers

interested in auditioning, and divided these sessions into a five-day practice program posted to Google Classroom. That will start with auditions this summer—with social distancing of course. Typically participants would learn material in-person a week leading up to the audition. Instead this year, dancers will use materials posted online a week before audition to prepare, and coaches will only see students dance on the day of the actual audition, with measures in place to ensure that dancers are in small groups and maintain social distance. Before these new, socially-distant dance auditions occur, dancers need to train. That’s where local dance studios come into play with training online. At the start of quarantine, Jennifer Hoff Friedman, owner of Dance Et Cetera in Helena, ShelbyLiving.com

reached out to parents to tell them about the virtual dance content and that they would not be charged tuition for the months of April and May, since she wanted to relieve as much financial hardship as she could during this time. Soon their dancers could start using videos of recital choreography so that dancers could continue to practice technique daily. They could also access a virtual library of more than 40 dance classes. “We created our virtual training program because we couldn’t leave our dancers without the things they love, just because we couldn’t meet in person,” Jennifer says. “This pandemic reminded us that a big part of our responsibility to our dancers is to always be prepared for creative problem solving!” To problem solve themselves, Dance Et Cetera also offered a curbside costume pickup and an outdoor, social-distance-friendly registration for classes in the fall throughout the safer-at-home order. And safely bringing students together for a recital meant building an outdoor stage for her students after the school year ended. “Our dancers 38 July/August 2020

work extremely hard all year long, and it broke our hearts to consider not having recitals for them,” she says. “We tackled this challenge head on with the construction of our outdoor amphitheater and have encountered nothing but positive responses for it!” Over at Southern Dance Arts in Alabaster, owner Janis Sherwood also began to offer online training, first through private YouTube videos and a private Facebook page, and then by offering classes through Zoom several days a week. However, the quick turnaround was difficult, and she said it took several weeks for her to develop an effective program to continue classes virtually. For a while, Janis had had an idea to restructure her program, and the pandemic helped push her to do so. By May she had new programs in place, such as a smaller number of dancers in teams sorted by age groups as well as master class opportunities, and a Talent search program called the Aspiring Artist Talent Competition, for when the studio reopens in the summer. But reopening certainly didn’t mean business as

DANCER PROFILE: CHAILYN RILE Chailyn was a Thompson High School Warriorette this past season during her freshman year of high school and is planning to audition for the upcoming season. When she learned that she would be training online, she understood, but was concerned and disappointed. Here’s how she continued to train: “My dance team coach has posted optional things to do every day on Google Classroom. Everyday has a 10-minute stretch, and (my coach) switches up whether we work on core, arms, or legs for a little bit of a daily workout. She also switches the skill we are working on daily like jumps, turns, kick line technique, etc. I have learned some combos through Instagram lives and YouTube videos.” “I strongly dislike having to train at home! I miss my team so much. Practicing together is such a big part of what bonds us together so well. I think quarantine has set back my life as a dancer quite a bit. Tryouts are different this year, and we will not be able to attend a big UDA camp.”

usual. Instead, there strict rules and limitations on student drop-off and pick-up, cleaning procedures, what will be allowed in the studio, as well as allowing ample time between classes to properly execute these practices. There won’t be any partnering in choreography, where students are in physical contact with each other, which takes out a lot of creative elements of choreography, but Janis is focused on putting the safety of students and faculty first. After all, she knows this world is bigger than the 40 July/August 2020

one she lives in in many ways. “I’ve been in contact with teachers and studio owners from all over the world, and we have shared so many of the same struggles and frustration,” she says. “So many have had to shut their doors completely. Teachers and studio owners have reached out to help one another to survive this crisis. It’s been refreshing to see.” While dance studios and teams will continue to have to adapt, one thing is for sure— “The dance world will forever be changed by this,” Janis says. That and they will always find a way to keep dancing.

The Shelby County Chamber BUSINESS CONNECTIONS

Shelby County Ready to Work Program The Shelby County Chamber and 58 INC. are fortunate to speak with employers every day as they do business in our communities. Over the past several years, our team has met with 200+ Shelby County employers to learn about their businesses and to better understand their talent and workforce needs. Diverse in their makeup, these companies share a common opinion: Career exposure and soft skills are essential elements of a prepared workforce. It’s not the technical skills or training that prevents a successful hire or retention. It’s the lack of essential skills in punctuality, attitude and communication that prevent successful employment. Ready To Work (RTW) combines workplace readiness training with employer-driven curriculum and career exposure through compa-

ny engagement in the classroom and industry tours. The RTW curriculum is set to standards cited by business and industry employers throughout our state, and the skills cited in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) Reports. Led by this feedback, 58 INC., The Shelby County Chamber, The Onin Group and several of our schools in Shelby County, formed a partnership in 2019-2020 to pilot a new program called; High School Ready to Work. Four high schools –Thompson, Montevallo, Shelby County and Vincent Middle-High School – participated. The partnership developed a year-long program: One semester focused on soft skills training, and a second semester focuses on industry-specific career expo-

sure. Successful completion of the program allows the student to earn two credentials: “Alabama Certified Worker Certificate” and “National Career Readiness Certificate”. Students also received a “hands-on” experience through industry tours and guest speakers while learning about the variety of career options available to them. More than 30 major employers have participated in the program thus far by interacting with the students in some way. On January 23rd, and March 4th participating students were given the opportunity to interview with many of these employers for a full-time position after they graduate. A planned “Signing Day” will be celebrated virtually via the school’s social media accounts and press on those students’ suc-

cesses. We are thankful for each of our Ready to Work educators, Mrs. Dawn Howard (VMHS), Mrs. Ashley Crumpton (SCHS), Mr. Ashton Cottingham (MHS), Mr. Robert Bullington (THS) who have worked with us to build up each student and help them see their full potential in a worthwhile career through this class. Partnerships between education and industry are vital for a stronger and more prepared workforce. The Chamber and 58 INC. are thankful our local industry partners (below) jumped at the opportunity and supported this programming for each RTW student. This program allows employers to invest in their future workforce by informing students about their opportunities and the importance of stronger workforce skills.

Health Focus of the Month:

Going to your primary care doctor, pediatrician, or dentist are all part of taking care of your health. What about eye care? Eye care is an integral part of our health! Many say that our eyes are the windows to our body. Numerous systemic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, and tumors can be detected from an annual eye exam. Therefore, eye exams at every stage of life can help keep our vision strong and monitor for many systemic conditions. Also, many eye diseases such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy can occur without any noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Early detection of eye conditions are very important to long term prognosis. As summer is in full swing, here are some tips we should all follow to keep our eyes healthy. Many eye conditions have been linked

with sun damage such as cataracts and solar retinopathy. As we all head outdoors more during these months, it is important to protect ourselves and our eyes from harmful UV rays. I always recommend wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection along with hats to protect us from the sun when outdoors. Another common mistake people make is exposing your eyes with their contact lenses to water while swimming or other activities. The FDA recommends that all contact lenses should not be exposed to any water including swimming pools, tap water, ocean/lake water. This is due to the risk of the water potentially holding any type of microorganism, fungus, or bacteria that potentially can re-

sult in an infectious corneal ulcer. These ulcers, if serious enough, can cause long term damage to our eyes. If you happen to get water in your eyes with contacts while swimming it is best to take the contacts out to clean and disinfect them as soon as possible to decrease your likelihood of complications. As we spend more time outdoors and increase use of fans and air conditioning, our eyes can also start becoming dryer. It is very common that eyes can feel gritty and irritated during the summer months, your eye doctor can simply recommend over the counter tears or prescribe certain medications if your condition is severe or linked to any systemic conditions. It is also very crucial

to wear safety glasses whether you are playing sports or doing lawn work. Eye health is critical for everyone of all ages. The AOA recommends the first eye exam to be performed before a child is 12 months, at least once before 5 years old, then yearly during school years. Once a patient is above 18, it is recommended that a patient have an eye exam at least every 2 years. Once a patient reaches 40 years old, they should receive an exam every 1-2 years as many eye diseases are linked with aging. At Vision First Eye Center, we offer a wide range of medical, surgical and routine services. We specialize in primary eye care, iLasik, and laser cataract surgery. CENSUS 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The 2020 Census is closer than you think! Here’s a quick refresher of what it is and why it’s essential that everyone is counted.

Everyone counts. The census counts every person living in the United States once, only once, and in the right place.

It’s about fair representation.

It’s in the Constitution.

Every 10 years, the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets.

The U.S. Constitution mandates that everyone in the country be counted every 10 years. The first census was in 1790.

It’s about $675 billion.

It’s about redistricting. After each decade’s census, state officials redraw the boundaries of the congressional and state legislative districts in their states to account for population shifts.

The distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants, and support to states, counties, and communities are based on census data.

Taking part is your civic duty.

That money is spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs.

Completing the census is mandatory: it’s a way to participate in our democracy and say “I COUNT!”

62 July/August 2020

Census data are being used all around you.

Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices, and stores, which create jobs.

Residents use the census to support community initiatives involving legislation, quality-of-life, and consumer advocacy.

Real estate developers use the census to build new homes and revitalize old neighborhoods.

Your privacy is protected. It’s against the law for the Census Bureau to publicly release your responses in any way that could identify you or your household. By law, your responses cannot be used against you and can only be used to produce statistics.

Newsletter

Local governments use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness.

2020 will be easier than ever. In 2020, you will be able to respond to the census online.

You can help. You are the expert—we need your ideas on the best way to make sure everyone in your community gets counted.

MY SHELBY COUNTY CHAD SCROGGINS New County Manager for Shelby County

Southern Style

Big Bad Breakfast The Cathead Chicken Biscuit here is one of the best southern style meals in town. I highly recommended after a long morning on the bike. Nick Pihakis’s restaurants never let you down including Little Donkey just next door.

For a Pretty View On the Trail Again

History Lesson

American Village Citizenship Trust The opportunity to walk the campus or attend an event should inspire us all to understand how our forefathers intended for our government to operate. While you are there, check out the Veteran’s Shrine where you can enter the information of a military veteran and produce an interactive story of his/ her life and the 4th of July fireworks celebration.

80 July/August 2020

Oak Mountain State Park With 10,000 acres, this state park has a little bit of everything to do, but for me it is all about the mountain bike trails. I enjoy the approximately 50 miles of trails there but specifically riding the 20-mile “old loop.” I’m pictured there with my daughter Evie, who is 12.

The Cahaba River One of the best views of it is Cahaba River Park on the north or on the Helena side off of County Road 13. It is a partnership between Shelby County and the Forever Wild Land Trust.

Festival Time

Mt Laurel Spring & Fall Festivals Dunnavant Valley is a beautiful setting for people to converge on Mt Laurel. I encourage visitors to take a walk on the Dunnavant Valley Greenway before they leave the area.
