There is nothing like a big event – a wedding, a reunion, an anniversary - to inspire a fun getaway.

This spring, we are celebrating weddings and anniversaries, graduations and milestones achieved. And if we are honest, there is so much work that goes into planning these big events. It can feel like we’ve run a race when we finally get here. After all, what mother-of-the-bride hasn’t wished for her own weeklong-honeymoon-style getaway after helping to execute her daughter’s dream wedding? And to be sure, before we even get to the big celebrations, there are lots of smaller ones along the way: bridesmaids trips, groomsmen getaways, planning excursions and site visits for parties. We’ve selected three of our favorite locations which might just fit the bill for anything you have planned this spring. With destinations at the lake, the beach and in the mountains, there is a little something for everyone. Of course, you might just have to hit all three. They’re all very special!

An Active Retreat

Just a short drive on I-20 from Birmingham, Reynolds Lake Oconee has been drawing Magic City visitors for years. Long known for its exceptional golf program and stunning setting on Lake Oconee, this Ritz-Carlton resort has something for everyone. The five-story property has rooms and suites of various sizes to accommodate a variety of guests, but larger parties may choose to book one of the six separate cottages that front the lake itself. Imagine settling in with your best girlfriends for a weekend of wedding planning and spa visits. One of the more recent additions to this property is Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, which is nestled into 100-acres of pristine East Georgia countryside. Great Britain’s internationally-acclaimed shooting champion Justin Jones and his team have worked tirelessly to develop the property and make it a luxurious, world-class shooting destination. Sandy Creek features a 20-station sporting clays course, five-stand shooting range and sporting clays. Women make up the fastest-growing sector of the shooting market, so even if you’ve never picked up a 20-gauge shotgun before, we challenge you to try your hand at this sport. It is thrilling!

Fine Dining

Of course, no getaway would be complete without great food, and this is one more way Reynolds Lake Oconee shines. There are a number of on-site restaurants that can be intimate respites for two, or host a large group of revelers. Book one of the cottages, and you can have chef-driven meals brought to your own private domain and never lift a finger.

Make It Permanent

separates guests from the wonder of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Pause for a moment to take in the chatter of woodland life, feel the cool and earthy breeze that comes whispering through the centuries-old growth. This may be just the setting you desire for a honeymoon or a relaxed couples retreat.

Feeling Cozy

Rooms are available in the lodge’s main Swag House, where Deener and Dan once had rooms for each of their children to come and visit. These are spacious mountaintop rooms with truly elegant amenities not often found at this altitude. One of the most coveted rooms might be the one with the large copper tub on the porch. Picture yourself taking in the moonrise, enveloped in and sipping on bubbles. Adjacent Chestnut Lodge features five other spaces while seven cabins and suites across the property provide truly intimate privacy. The Balsam Cottage is one of our personal favorites with fireplaces, a sauna, an outdoor shower and soaking tub, beckoning you after a long hike.

The Great Smokies Daytime on the mountain is your time – hours to explore the GSMNP on foot, with or without a guide, like one of the experts-in-residence who have been coming to the property for years. You may choose to amble down the lawn to one of the nooks tucked into the rhododendron-lined hillside, taking along the lunch that the kitchen made for you this morning. Or, stake your claim on a rocking chair on the porch, cracking open a new hardback, losing count of all the hummingbirds that also call The Swag home.

The Colquitts recognized and relished the respite of The Swag, having been guests and friends of the Matthews for so many years. But, in taking the reins of ownership, they have endeavored to add even more luxury to the mountaintop: adding a spa, fitness center, wine and cocktail tastings, as well as a soaking pool with breathtaking views of the area. Tours of the garden on site are rounded out with cocktail-crafting classes where guests are invited to try their hand at mixology. A Hotel with a Romantic Past

Sugar White Sands

For some, there is no getaway like a beach getaway. We get that. For those folks, we suggest something different than your typical 30-A trip: The Hotel Don CeSar in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also known as The Pink Palace, this grand hotel sits majestically on the sugar-white sands of St. Pete, just a short drive from the Tampa airport.

Pink Palace History

The Don (as it is also known) enjoys a rich romantic past that is honored still today. Real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe built the resort in the height of the Great Gatsby era of 1928, as a tribute to the love of his life. The property attracted a number of notable guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself and was quite the destination in its heyday before Rowe’s untimely death in 1940. Two years later, the United States Army purchased the property and used it as a place for returning WWII injured airmen to convalesce. After that, the hotel languished for several years before a group of investors lovingly brought it back to life.

Revelers Welcomed

Now a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America, much of the era’s panache can be felt in every corner of the hotel – from the vaulted ceilings of the marble-clad lobby to the wide breezeways to the guest rooms that feel very nautical in detail. There are grand ballrooms for large parties and sweeping vistas that recall that bygone era of grandeur. The hotel hosts weddings year-round where the Pink Palace feels like a de facto member of the party. While the hotel’s spa and idyllic beach setting are enough to keep guests on property, it would be a shame to miss some of the other fun things to do in the area.

Dreamland

In fact, take a page from New York Times’ best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, who set his most recent romantic novel, Dreamland, at the Don CeSar, a site he visits yearly and has great affection for. The main characters of the novel, Morgan and Colby, engage all of St. Pete as the backdrop to their own love story – kayaking in clear-bottomed boats amongst the mangroves and spending stretches of time at the acclaimed Salvador Dali museum – which might just inspire a little romance of your own. doncesar.com
