Newgrass

acoustic band, Act of Congress, has a story as unique as its eclectic sound.

SSpringtime beckons a season of euphoric dawns–strokes of auburn and indigo caressing the sky every morning to wake our sleeping selves into motion. At least waking to work feels a little easier, a little more hopeful now. January blues are at our tail and springtime–symbolic of youth, learning, growing–is amidst.

Spring is my favorite season. I love the temperatures steadily climbing from the trenches of the “60s” to the subtle hues in the mid “70s.” I love my fiancé bringing me a host of blossoming Oriental Trumpet Lilies on Valentine’s Day–a day I symbolize as my own start to spring, thanks to my table’s new centerpiece each year.

I’ve been waiting since I was 5 years old to be a spring bride. I watched “Bride Wars” with Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as a kid and just knew I was going to get married in June at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Eighteen years later, I have come to realize my Excel budget has far too many boxes than I have dollar signs to put in them.

So, I settled for May in Birmingham.

Nonetheless, I seem to be living a dream I so hoped and prayed for as a kid. A dream that is slightly less extravagant than younger me may have pictured.

Though I am in the “spring” of my career and of my future marriage, I feel seasoned. Reality often hits me 90-to-nothing against a brick wall. Reality, if I’m honest, is realizing the older I grow–the less I really know.

It’s difficult navigating life straight out of college. Success isn’t tenured. It is sown in every “spring” of life through hard work and a relentless passion to achieve. Achieve what, exactly? For some, that’s owning a piece of the Earth. Others, that’s obtaining a title change on Facebook or a plaque on a desk.

A red flag of mine is that I strive to make myself sound eloquent on paper–but that doesn’t mean I know what I’m trying to achieve or better yet, how I’ll actually achieve said dream. I’m still trying to teach my 20-month-old, Jacob, the concept of gravity. I have a feeling that lesson may have to be “self-taught.”

My point? I’ve learned in this “spring” stage that my dreams as a kid don’t always look like the reality I’m living now, and I’m learning to be okay with that. Perhaps “springs” are necessary learning curves to prepare us not only to walk through, but also to enjoy the other seasons of life. Though climbing mountains may humble me, at least I’ll smell the lilies along the way.

Warmly,

NEWGRASS

It took an “Act of Congress” for this acoustic group to meet and create its “newgrass” sound.

NNow into its 14th year as a band with two EPs and four albums, Act of Congress–Connie Skellie, Chris Griffin, Adam Wright and Tim Carroll Jr.,–has become known as one of the “Must See Live Acts of Alabama’’ and has opened for artists including Toby Keith, John Mayer, Sara Evans, Edwin McCain and Taylor Hicks. The band just wrapped up what Connie calls “an incredible year,” playing weddings and shows in Birmingham and all over the country, including a two-day wedding event at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina. The band recently had its sixth collaboration with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, which had more than 2,000 in attendance, causing the show to be pushed back 15 minutes due to all of the fans trying to get into the

venue.

“Shout out to all of you who fought the traffic and filled the room,” Connie says. “Your support is why we are able to continue living this dream.”

So what makes this band stand out? Act of Congress plays only acoustic instruments in its music, giving them a one-of-a-kind sound that combines several genres of music including bluegrass, folk and pop.

“We use our instruments and voices to create energy, and oftentimes, people are left wondering how only four people can make such a full sound,” Connie says.

Tim describes their sound as “very eclectic.”

“We have found that we appeal to a wide range of ages and demographics, which allows everyone

ShelbyLiving.com 17

to enjoy themselves at our shows,” he says.

IT TOOK AN ACT OF CONGRESS

Although Chris says they have played for a few governors and members of Congress, the band’s name had nothing specifically to do with Washington. Chris and Adam met while students at the University of Montevallo. At the time, Adam was playing guitar and Chris was playing the mandolin, and they were interested in merging the sounds of progressive bluegrass with soft pop using acoustic instruments. In the early days of practicing while in college, Chris says it was mentioned that

working together around everyone’s schedule would take—you guessed it—an “Act of Congress.”

But, they made it happen.

“The band was originally a three-piece jam band with another member,” Chris says. “He wanted to stop after a year or so. I remember after that meeting going to lunch with Adam, and we decided to keep it rolling.”

Connie’s participation in the band began at a local restaurant, discussing the possibilities of continuing Act of Congress.

“My husband and I had played music with Adam, and I knew Chris and Tim from the musical circles we were involved in,” Connie says. “Even though I

declined the offer initially, I had another opportunity a few years later to rejoin the group.”

As timing would have it, the first project that Connie, Adam, Tim and Chris worked on together as a group was a song Adam was working on called, “Chance Meeting.”

“Isn’t that an appropriate title? It’s still a favorite today. The humble beginnings have led to wonderful opportunities to share our music with people all around the world,” Connie says.

GROWING UP ON MUSIC

All of the members had a passion for music since

they were children. Connie began taking violin lessons when she was just 3 years old.

“Violin was a major part of my growing up with the most wonderful teachers, Jeffrey and Angela Flaniken, helping to guide me through the difficulties and beauty of classical music,” Connie says.

However, she admits that singing is her true joy.

“Sarah Lumpkin was my choir teacher at Briarwood from the time I was in grade school through most of my high school years,” Connie says. “I can’t say enough about the impact she had in my life just by encouraging me and finding ways to make me a better vocalist, whether it was all

state competitions, solo vocal competitions or musicals.”

Connie was awarded a full vocal scholarship at Jefferson State Community College where she trained under Todd Norton, whom she describes as “humble and talented.”

“When I look back on my musical journey leading up to Act of Congress, it’s easy to see that all of these musical endeavors helped me to be able to step into that role and continue the process of learning and growing,” she says.

Act of Congress is known for incorporating whistling into songs. When Connie was 12, she learned about a whistling competition where the winning piece, Méditation from Thaïs, was the exact piece she was learning on the violin.

“I honestly couldn’t believe how beautiful it sounded. From that moment on, I spent my entire sixth grade year learning how to whistle,” she says. “There have been a few times that a smile has run across my face during a whistle solo. It’s really hard to whistle when you are smiling!”

Having started playing since the fourth grade, Chris grew up on rock guitarists of the ‘90s, including Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

“My parents were very supportive with lessons,” Chris says. “I had some great teachers growing up. In college I discovered the newgrass band, Nickel Creek. They were very influential in my early adult years.”

Adam started playing piano in the third grade and was always involved with music in school as well as church. He began playing guitar and writing songs in high school and later played the mandolin in college.

“In high school, Ben Folds kept the piano fun for me,” Adam says. “I’d spend hours learning his songs note for note on the piano. He has such a natural sense of melody, and his style was and still is so unique.”

Like Chris, Adam says Nickel Creek also grew his love and appreciation for acoustic music.

“In a world full of synthesizers and drum machines, there’s something really authentic about an acoustic performance,” Adam says.

Tim started playing cello in his school’s “strings” class in sixth grade and then moved to bass in seventh grade.

“Early on it was all classical music for me, but once I got to high school, I started playing in the jazz band and marching band as well as the local youth symphony,” Tim says.

SHARING MUSIC WITH THE WORLD

The band has been on five tours for the U.S. State Department as U.S. Cultural Ambassadors, traveling to countries including Thailand, Bali and Saudi Arabia. Connie describes their participation in the program as a “gift” to the members of the band, showing how music bridged the gap between cultural differences.

“I remember playing outside of Liberia in a small village, where no one spoke English. We couldn’t communicate with the crowd, but when we played that first note, we were all united,” Connie says. “The former president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, was poised and elegant. It was an honor to play at their celebration.”

Connie says she remembers their beautiful smiles and happy faces as they clapped their hands to the beat.

“The music filled that room, and it united us,” Connie says. “It’s a powerful thing to see that

ShelbyLiving.com 21

happen over and over again.”

Adam says when the band toured Jordan, they had the unique opportunity to play in an ancient colosseum.

“Tim was playing with a borrowed bass that folded up and fit in a box. The bass had been faithful the entirety of the tour until this final performance. Right in the middle of our final song, the bridge slipped out from under the strings. BAM! The sound was so loud! There really wasn’t a way to recover after that. We looked at each other for a moment, then thanked the audience and left. It was pretty funny.”

Back at home, Act of Congress has become a popular band of choice for weddings, with the band often playing the ceremony and reception.

“The ceremony has a classical quartet feel, while the reception feels very Motown and current,” Chris says. “Adam and Connie are both fantastic singers, and we’ve learned over the years how to get people dancing and having a good time.”

Act of Congress is also known for its Christmas songs and performances that resonate with its fans.

“Our Christmas music is special and unique,” Connie says. “Every note has a purpose. We put our

22 March/April 2023

very heart and soul into the creative process of arranging these songs.”

At the end of last year, Act of Congress played its brand-new song, “We Three Kings,” at Church of the Highlands for the church’s Christmas services. The band then rang in the New Year with a fivehour set at The Club on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s such an incredible process to take a song like that and make it our very own,” Connie says. “All of the grueling hours of work seem to pay off when you walk out of the studio with a product you are proud of.”

As they look to the future, they’re grateful that their band has become like a second family.

“Even though we don’t spend much time together outside of our rehearsals, traveling and performances, we support and love each other very much,” Connie says.

Adam agrees.

“I’m constantly reminded how thankful I am for these friendships and the tremendous blessing it is to collectively share this wonderful gift with others,” he says.

Seventy years in the making: A look at the living legacy of Indian Springs School.

26 March/April 2023

IIn its 70 years of existence, Indian Springs School has proven it is not a typical institution.

The campus hides beyond the trees of its titular town outside of Pelham with a campus that spans across 350 acres. The building looks more like a museum than what one would think of as a school. The students are able to walk grounds and behold the sight of a picturesque lake that’s home to two swans and other animal life.

“Since the school’s founding, Indian Springs has been dedicated to inspiring intellectual curiosity and individual thought,” Indian Springs Head of School Scott Schamberger says. “The school’s motto of ‘Learning through Living’ and the fundamental value of participatory citizenship foster the culture that Indian Springs students are actively engaged in a unique and individualized educational journey.”

The boarding and day-school was founded in 1952 after Harvey G. Woodward, a Birmingham industrialist who attended MIT, left $6 million after his death to go towards the school’s creation. What began as a small boys school of roughly 62 students and 10 faculty has grown to more than 4,000 alums, representing 50 countries and six continents.

Currently, the school has 326 students in grades 8-12, representing nine states and 12 countries. Eighty-two of the students are boarding students who live on campus. In any given year, the school has 20-to-25 languages being spoken on campus.

The school has been ranked the number one private high school in Alabama for eight consecutive years and is currently ranked the number one high school in Alabama for both college prep and STEM. It is also in the top 50 best boarding schools in the U.S. and among only a handful in the South.

Indian Springs also offers more than 120 courses, including 18 AP classes, dozens of electives and numerous independent study options.

“Indian Springs is unapologetically different in the educational world,” Scott says. “Our campus is more reminiscent of a small liberal arts college rather than a high school. With 325 students in grades 8-12, we are a small school community with big school resources and opportunities. We celebrate individual and collective successes as a community. Students explore a variety of interests. One moment they are competing with their classmates in a math competition, and then the next, they are on stage together or on the soccer field. Oftentimes, high school students are defined by others as the academic, the athlete or the artist.

ShelbyLiving.com 27

Indian Springs students have the freedom to explore interests and develop new passions. They can choose to be involved in all areas of school life and fluidly move between different peer groups. This creates a more interconnected community and more enduring, meaningful friendships.”

Scott emphasizes that students are encouraged to have the freedom to create and own their experience at Indian Springs School, which in turn leads to a deep love and respect for the school that continues even after graduation.

The Indian Springs alumni stay deeply involved in the life of the school. The school hosts several events for alumni throughout the year, including its alumni weekend in April and the alumni holiday party before Christmas. The school currently has six alumni that are current members of the faculty and staff.

It would seem that being an Indian Springs student almost instills a drive for success in its students. Several alumni have gone on to make

28 March/April 2023

names for themselves, including authors John Green and Daniel Alarcon; film directors John Badham, Hanelle Culpepper and Michael McCullers; ambassador Mark Gitenstein; congresswoman Elaine Luria; and NASA flight director David Oh.

“The Indian Springs curriculum is designed to inspire students to be lifelong learners,” Scott says.

“The Indian Springs faculty is comprised of contentarea experts whose love of their discipline is only surpassed by their desire to teach this age group of

students and ignite that same love of learning that they enjoy.”

Scott adds that he himself is drawn to the school because of the strength and diversity of the students and alums he has met.

“Indian Springs is not a typical neighborhood school,” he says. “Our students matriculate from across Birmingham, Alabama, the U.S. and the world. Relationships are at the heart of the Indian Springs experience, and the connections students make stay with them for a lifetime. Indian Springs

ShelbyLiving.com 29

students have a much stronger sense of self than most high school-age students. They learn to think more boldly and dig deeper as learners here. Those habits stick with them in college and beyond.”

Due to the students’ freedom to explore multiple interests, the campus feels more like a family-unit than what one would expect from a typical high school environment. There are no cliques, no stereotypes and students and faculty have mutual respect that benefits the learning experience as well as teaching students how to engage with those in a higher position than they’re currently in. Overall, Scott says Indian Springs teaches students how to unapologetically be themselves in a safe and open environment.

“The person a student wakes up as at home every day—I love the fact that they get to be that person on our campus,” Scott explains. “Young people far too often feel like they have to conform to someone else’s perception of them. Indian Springs students can be themselves and are respected and celebrated by each other. This is so simple yet profound in the growth and development of young people.”

At the 2022 Indian Springs graduation, there were no traditional formalities of a typical graduation such as a cap and gown or a valedictorian,

ShelbyLiving.com 31

and that is once again because Indian Springs is not a typical school.

“Indian Springs is unapologetically different,” Scott says. “Our students have the freedom to be themselves, the opportunity to explore intellectual and extracurricular interests, the space and time to engage with the natural world on our 350-acre campus and the responsibility to own their education. Magical things happen when motivated and curious students from across the state of Alabama, the U.S. and the world engage together inside and outside classrooms with passionate and talented teachers, coaches and mentors.”

Scott adds he is impressed on a regular basis by the Indian Springs students.

“I am inspired by the energy and enthusiasm that Indian Springs students flood our campus with on a daily basis,” he says. “They demand more of our faculty and push us to be the best educators we can be.”

What started as the dream of a man who sought a higher form of learning be available to those who value it, has evolved into the “Indian Springs way.” As long as the doors of Indian Springs School are open, those seeking knowledge and a safe place to garner it will always have a home.

FLAVORFUL CUISINE

Greek Street Brings the Flavors of Athens to Birmingham.

FFrom its location on Valleydale Road, Greek Street aims to transport Birmingham customers half a world away.

Started in 2021 by Keith Richards–who also owns the popular Taziki’s restaurants–Greek Street is a fast-casual joint inspired by Athens’ street food. While Taziki’s is known for its blend of Greek and Southern cuisines, Greek Street has a pared-down menu that focuses on traditional Greek flavors.

Keith, who still travels to Greece annually to get new ideas, took particular inspiration from street food in the country’s capital, Athens. He wanted to open a restaurant near his home in Inverness that reflected those flavors. That is how Greek Street–a small but cheerful storefront dotted with blue umbrellas–came to be.

The curated menu reflects Keith’s inspiration. There are gyros, which include chicken, beef, lamb or vegetarian falafel (friend chickpea patties) stuffed into warm pita alongside seasoned fries. Customers can also opt for pork or chicken roll-ups, colorful salads and bowl meals, a lamb burger and sides like GRK street corn, corn-on-the-cob coated in a yogurt-lime sauce, herbs and crumbled feta.

For dessert customers can choose from Greek classics like baklava–a sweet, flaky layered pastry with a nutty filling–or baklava cheesecake from Hellas Bakery. There are also loukoumades–bitesized Greek donuts served warm with powdered sugar, cinnamon and honey. Those will be familiar to anyone who has been to Birmingham’s annual Greek Food Festival, where loukoumades are in

34 March/April 2023

freshly made and in high demand.

Greek Street’s meats are particularly distinctive. The restaurant’s beef, lamb, chicken and pork are spit-roasted throughout the day. Spit-roasting is a traditional preparation that gives the meat a distinctive charred, spiced flavor and tender texture. Among Greek Street’s most popular dishes are the beef or lamb gyros, made with the roasted meat, and the chicken souvlaki–marinated, roasted chicken used in kebabs, rollups, gyros, salads and more.

“Chicken souvlaki is straight from the Athens area, and it is just really flavorful,” General Manager Andrew Georgg says. Andrew previously worked with Keith at Taziki’s for three years before moving to Greek Street in May.

Andrew believes the combination of convenience and authenticity appeals to his customers. Someone can order via the drive-thru or walk in, order at the counter and get their food quickly without sacrificing flavor.

“I think our customers appreciate being able to

36 March/April 2023

come in here, order and get something quickly, at a really reasonable price, that is still flavorful and fresh,” Andrew says. “We make everything fresh, all day, every day.”

Greek Street’s prices range from about $7-$11 for individual entrees, and catering prices are similarly economical. The affordability is an aspect that Andrew takes pride in, especially with inflation and other economic pressures affecting both restaurants and customers.

“We really wanted to make this affordable,” he

says.

Though Andrew is relatively new to Greek street, he has been around the restaurant business for as long as he can remember. Andrew’s father managed an Arby’s franchise throughout Andrew’s childhood, and he remembers watching him work and listening to him talk about running the restaurant.

“I have been in the restaurant business for most of my life, and [I] really grew up around it,” he says.

Working with Taziki’s and Greek Street has been a highlight of his career so far.

three or four years ago, and he has been great to me.”

As Greek Street enters its third year, Andrew is excited about several growth opportunities, including expanding the restaurant’s catering business. He says Greek Street’s catering has quickly gained a following among local businesses that have tried it.

Popular catering options include hummus and whipped feta dips and “GRK Feasts” of shrimp kebobs, chicken souvlaki kebabs, shaved beef and lamb or chicken roll-ups. Catering customers can also choose from a selection of boxed lunches with gyros, rollups or the Greek Street lamb burger and a variety of salads and sides. And of course, there are

ORDERING OPTIONS: Greek Street offers dine-in, take-out, drive-thru service and catering.

MENU ITEMS TO TRY: General Manager Andrew Georgg highly recommends the gyros–a wrap with warm pita bread, seasoned fries, tomatoes, onions and Taziki sauce (a yogurt sauce with cucumber, garlic and spices). Greek Street’s chicken souvlaki is also a popular option–marinated, spit-roasted chicken served in gyros or roll-ups and on salads.

ANDREW GEORGG’S FAVORITE: The Beet Salad bowl topped with souvlaki chicken. The salad includes beets, fennel slaw, green peppers, carrots, tomatoes, onions, oregano, feta crumbles and sliced almonds, dressed with a red wine vinaigrette.

A FRESH SIDE TO TRY: The GRK Street Corn is corn-on-the-cob coated with a yogurt lime sauce, Greek herbs and crumbled feta. It’s fresh, unique and a great complement to the entrees.

“The catering has really taken off,” Andrew says. “It has been a busy start to the year.”

The general manager is confident that the more people try Greek Street’s food, the more they will come through the doors–or through the drivethru–on Valleydale Road.

“As soon as people try our food, they are usually hooked,” he says. “They keep coming back.”

HOME STYLE&

SHOAL CREEK CHATEAU

Mirroring Jason Thomas’s mind is a reflection of all things bright and beautiful.

HHalf a decade after Shelby Living’s first interview with Jason Thomas, a real estate mogul whose knack for refining beautiful homes has earned him national recognition, the magazine revisited him–this time at his latest project in Shoal Creek.

Jason bought this mansion in 2020 and focused on updating the interior with European aspects–inspired by his studying abroad in Europe, namely the Daniel House, which is owned by Samford University and based in London, England. Over the last 10 years, he’s purchased, perfected and sold seven different homes. While renovating houses is one of his passions, he didn’t start out in the house-flipping business.

Jason graduated from Samford University and pursued law school at Birmingham School of Law, but he quickly realized the legal profession wasn’t for him. Soon after, he founded a car dealership in Gardendale, World Class Motors LLC, and grew his business by marketing luxury cars. Quickly after starting his business, both his mother and father quit their jobs to help him run the

dealership.

House renovating, in fact, started from Jason’s love of drawing and art. Today, artists’ work such as that of Rembrandt, Picasso, Salvador Dali and more all have homes adorning this chateau’s walls. A self-taught artist himself, Jason has been drawing since he was young but interestingly, he never pursued architecture school.

“I’ve always been able to draw houses since I was a kid,” Jason says. “[When] I was in the fifth grade, I actually drew the blueprints [free-hand] to my parents’ house that they built in 1994. I got put in the paper for that.”

While Jason’s art collection isn’t for sale, almost every home he’s sold has been bought completely furnished with the furniture he’s staged. This home’s price tag starts at $3.15 million. Complete with an indoor pool and sauna, a heating and cooling carpeted garage, an elevator, crystal chandeliers and soaring light-filled rooms, this gorgeous mansion is sure to wow any homebuyer looking for “perfection.”

ShelbyLiving.com 43

Grand Foyer

The grand foyer greets guests with a stunning view of the backyard and 20-foot ceilings that are accentuated by a crystal chandelier. Jason’s realtors, Steven and Connie Jacks, who own The Luxe Group with White House Real Estate, love the innate intricacies of the home. Connie’s personal favorite details are the grand chandeliers.

Kitchen

Jason designed the kitchen’s floor plan and even the layout and design of his cabinets. He picked out the white and gold quartz countertops and gold fixtures and finishes. He also taught himself how to build kitchen cabinetry as a hobby.

ShelbyLiving.com 45

Art in Disguise

Jason’s collection contains hundreds of pieces of priceless art–some of which a passerby might miss if not for a second look.

Dining Room

The dining room has access both to the kitchen and the art hallway which connects to the living room. The most beautiful details in the home are often found in Jason’s chandeliers, some of which are from Fischer-Gambino in New Orleans. Many others are by designer John-Richard.

Living Room

Jason opted for an all-black, herring bone-style fireplace that stretches more than 20 feet to the ceiling for a dramatic statement, centering the room’s focus on the grandeur of the room itself. One of Jason’s biggest home-renovating tips is to accentuate rooms with natural light.

Local Growth

This Calera-based gift and decor shop is planting roots in the community.

IIn a shop where creating a sense of community is as important as the products it sells, Andrea Huff builds relationships one interaction, gift and plant at a time. Each piece at her store, Plant, is unique—and she traces that love for her lifestyle brand back to her deep family roots and traditions.

Growing up in the South, Andrea was surrounded by amazing women like her mother, grandmothers and aunts. She remembers her family teaching her how to garden, care for house plants, entertain company, decorate a home or workspace and whip up a dish when there were unexpected guests.

To keep those once-common skills alive for current and future generations, Andrea knew she wanted to create a lifestyle brand—and what better place than the area she called home.

Andrea and her husband knew they wanted to raise their two children in a small town and

community they could be proud of. They fell in love with what was going on with Historic Calera Main Street and wanted to get involved, which planted the seed for starting a new business.

As many closed their doors in 2020, Andrea prepared to open her botanical lifestyle store with the support of her family. They began selling succulents, gifts, décor and other items residents might not find in other stores.

“Living in a small town doesn’t mean we don’t have nice things available to us,” she says. “I thought I couldn’t be the only one leaving the area to find unique gifts with meaningful connections.”

She adds each item in the store with intention, from hand-painted canvases from Kiki Motif to Kelley Boggio to Rhodes Soapery by Ryan Rhodes and other sustainable products. Several of the items she carries in the shop are made for Plant, like a

ShelbyLiving.com 53

paint-by-numbers kit from Kiki Motif.

“It’s one thing to find something you don’t see everywhere,” Andrea says. “But, it’s another when someone makes it specifically for us.”

Plant has won Shelby County’s best gift shop two years in a row. It continues to attract shoppers with not only unique gifts, but also with a welcoming experience.

“It makes my heart so happy to see people go out of their way to shop with me because they love what I have—not just because it’s convenient,” Andrea says. “We have a curated collection of things you

won’t see everywhere. I love how people want to surprise their loved ones with things from our shop.”

As the shop’s name suggests, plants are an important part of the business. Andrea began with Alabama-grown succulents and house plants, which can help transform any space.

“Adding a house plant can be the difference between a house and a home,” Andrea says. “Sometimes it can be as simple as that.”

To match customers with the right plant, she talks with them about their experience caring for plants, their home environment and what their life is like.

54 March/April 2023

She then shares care instructions to ensure they have success with the plant. The shop also offers a plant club where participants can pick up a plant each month.

As her succulents grew in popularity—being used in corsages, bouquets and more—it didn’t take long for customers to ask to add additional flowers to her arrangements.

“The more flowers I do, the more I love it,” she says. “It’s turned into such a great creative outlet and has been so fulfilling. Every time I try a new flower, it’s my new favorite.”

She began by keeping the flowers in buckets in an air-conditioned bathroom, but thanks to word of mouth from happy clients, the popularity of Plant’s arrangements has only taken off from there. The colorful foliage is now housed in a floral cooler, and Andrea creates pieces for proms, weddings and other special events.

“I took a leap of faith, and it turned out to be amazing,” she says.

As her first full-fledged wedding season approaches, Andrea says her staff strives to create arrangements that are simple but impactful, with a

ShelbyLiving.com 55

modern design that’s rooted in Southern culture.

“Every arrangement we do is better than the last,” she says.

While the expansion of her flower offerings came as a surprise, Andrea says she knew that opening during a global pandemic would require them to think outside of the box. Or in Plant’s case, the idea to set themselves apart actually is in a box.

To create a dynamic business model that would thrive even if customers couldn’t shop in-store, Andrea began offering subscription boxes that are mailed out monthly. Every box is carefully planned out with a theme in mind and includes a newsletter on how to care for the plant, recommendations on what to do with the items and a small business spotlight. By signing up, subscribers receive the first

look at items that will come to the store.

“The boxes have been a wonderful way to explore what people want and to give them that experience they can’t go to the store and buy,” she says.

Plant also offers standard and premium concierge gift boxes. Customers tell Andrea who the gift is for, if it’s a special occasion and any other information about what they like. She then picks out items and mails them in their branded box with a personalized card. These have become a way for both companies and individuals to show someone they care.

“It’s a great way to connect on a personal level with someone you might not know that well,” she says.

Andrea has also created the brand, Plant Preserves, which offers dried greenery, ceramics,

wood working, vintage planters and other antique items.

The shop has expanded to include an event space, which hosts in-house classes and workshops from other vendors, birthday parties, bridal showers and other special events. Full of character, the space has its own vibe and features antique furniture, repurposed wood and locally-sourced items to give guests a unique, intimate experience.

While what she creates and sells at the shop is clearly her passion, the community and people she works with are at the heart of everything she does.

“If I’m not investing in my community, why would my community invest in me? We can all give back in certain ways. It’s all about community and working together on things.”

Andrea participates in local markets and is involved with the Main Street board, helping with community events like bringing Santa and the Easter bunny downtown.

“When you own a local business, it’s not just a job. It’s your life. Without my community, peers and Main Street, I wouldn’t have expanded. The Lord has led me every step of the way.”

The Shelby County Chamber Kicks Off New “ F orward S helby C ounty ” Strategic Plan

The Shelby County Chamber kickedoff its new three-year Strategic Plan, Forward Shelby County , on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at its 42nd annual meeting luncheon.

The new three-year plan, which covers 2023-2025, builds on the success of the chamber’s most recent campaign: ShelbyOne-Next Level Up (2018-2022). That plan which concluded at the end of 2022 included expanded programs in the areas of business development and support, community and workforce development, governmental relations and a collaboration with 58 INC, Shelby County’s economic development corporation of the county.

Forward Shelby County , developed by business and community leaders from throughout the county, continues the chamber’s collaborative partnerships with public and private sector leaders working together to assist in growth for

existing businesses; career readiness and business-driven workforce development; advocacy for a continued strong business climate and a written collaborative engagement with 58 INC for economic development.

“We’ve accomplished quite a lot over the past five years, but this new threeyear plan ensures our chamber will continue to be an integral part of Shelby County’s positive growth through these worthwhile initiatives,” Chamber President and CEO Kirk Mancer says. “With the exceptionally strong leadership, from both the private and the public sector signing on to lend their endorsement of these initiatives, we’re excited about the direction we’re headed.”

MY SHELBY LIVING JACKIE BATSON

Calera Main Street’s Executive Director

Exceptional Events

Calera’s Annual Trunk or Treat Celebration

It’s hard to choose a favorite event since we have so many First Friday celebrations from March through August, but I would have to say that my favorite is Downtown Calera’s Annual Trunk or Treat. This was the very first event we ever held. We were blown away by how many people came out!

Making Memories

A Beautiful Calera Wedding

My all-time favorite memory in Calera was my daughter’s wedding in 2020. It was an intimate ceremony in the oldest church building in the City of Calera. The historic Presbyterian Church was built in 1885 and is a real hidden gem. We held the reception at Ozan Winery. The weather was perfect for a sunset dinner and dancing!

Local Eateries

Mama Coco Cantina & Gumbo to Geaux

My favorite sit down restaurant in Calera is Mama Coco Cantina. We eat there a lot! You can often find me gathering with friends after City Council meetings, enjoying their ceviche and spinach dip! With so many events downtown, we often have food trucks too, so I must mention Gumbo to Geaux as my favorite mobile meal and caterer. You have to try their Swamp Monster Burger! I pair it with their fried okra and bread pudding.

Helping Hands

Collectivus Church

I spend most of my time focused on downtown revitalization and economic development. While every new business opening is exciting, Collectivus Church holds a special place in my heart. Located in what once was a beloved department store that sat vacant for many years, I had the opportunity to work alongside some incredible volunteers to clean out, remodel and restore the property into a home for our church and a new chic-industrial event center.

Thriving in Community

Adventurer’s Coffee Co.

My work with Calera Main Street has me in and out of the shops and properties in our historic district, so much so that I usually have my laptop open at my favorite coffee shop, Adventurer’s Coffee Co. I had the pleasure of meeting James Spann at a book signing here. I gave him a hard time about beating me for “Best Personality” in the last “Best of the Best” contest! Maybe next year.
