W ON THE COVER

Andrew and Emily Blake

We are navigating uncharted territory right now. I don’t know what particular circumstances you and your family have dealt with in recent days, but I do know the novel coronavirus has impacted all of us. To our health care workers and first responders, thank you for your relentless work and the personal sacrifices you have made to help others during this pandemic. You are our heroes, and your courage and persistence are extraordinary. YOU are extraordinary. And to the many others carrying out jobs through this, making sure we have access to food and necessities and services, thank you for your work. May we never forget all of your efforts. Daily life certainly has taken on a new look and feel the last two months. We have learned what it means to socially distance ourselves from each other and rely on phone calls and video chats and emails to keep us connected. We have learned what it means for children to attend school through their computer screens at home. We have learned what it means to abide by shelter-in-place orders and curfews. We have learned about the people grappling with this disease, and grieved the lives it has claimed. We have hoped for better news to come each day, and maybe we’ve also learned what it means to not take things for granted—things like visiting our extended family members, attending our friends’ wedding ceremonies, eating lunch with our coworkers, and so many more big and small experiences that bring us joy. My hope is the stories in the following pages remind you that, even in the darkest of times, we still have hope. We have people in Shelby County who will go out of their way to deliver a hot meal, who will drop everything to put out a call for food donations, who will make sure their elderly neighbor has enough supplies to last another week. In the moments of uncertainty and fear, let’s cling to these examples of selflessness and support, and remember we are fortunate to live in this special community. If you know of other unsung heroes in Shelby County, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know. I would love to continue sharing these inspiring stories and celebrating people who are making a difference. And, as always, thank you for reading.

PARTY ON WHEELS ALABASTER Nine-year-old Kasyn Henderson’s family refused to let the COVID-19 pandemic take away her birthday celebration. On March 24, Kasyn stood at the end of her driveway as more than 20 of her teachers, friends and relatives drove past her house in parade-like fashion, shouting “happy birthday” to her and displaying signs they had decorated. When asked if she enjoyed her birthday, Kasyn said, “It was so good.” ShelbyLiving.com

Parking lots and prayers First Baptist Church of Helena found a fun way for its congregation members to gather recently without risking anyone’s health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Baileigh found

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Continue to Give When we see a need in our community, manpower, money and prayers are graciously given. An outpouring of love is shown whether we’re dealing with Mother Nature’s rage, a friend’s illness or a church fundraiser to send missionaries overseas. While cash is always welcomed, there are many tangible things we can contribute. This helps us provide for others and simplify our own lives as well. Every home and office has an excess of usable items, and the key is to know how and where to organize your donations. uStart with a box. Use shopping bags, clear bins or cardboard boxes that can be donated along with the items. Label the container. Put containers in a few different rooms. This makes purging easier when you Owner of SimpleWorks, Simpleworks.guru have a place to put unwanted items. lisa@simpleworks.guru uAsk hard questions. Do you 205.981.7733 love it, need it or value it? If you said “no” to any of these three questions, then out it goes. Reasons to keep items should not be that you might squeeze back into it one day, it was a good deal or you’ve barely used it. uIs it usable? Some things are beyond donating. Would you want something that’s dirty, stained, broken or missing pieces? If it’s beyond repair, then donating may not be the answer. uHousehold items. One thing that typically causes overcrowding in your closets are sheets for beds you no longer have. Too many towels and linens take up space and are much needed in animal shelters. uBOGO. Coupons, daily deals or store specials may save you money; however, if you don’t have the space to store these deals, then clutter just appeared in order to save a few dollars. Consider donating the extra toilet paper, paper towels or giant dish soap to First Light, Jimmie Hale Mission or King’s Ranch. Go ahead and buy the box of 500 envelopes since the cost is comparable to a small quantity, take out a few that you need and donate the rest. uToiletries: Shampoos, toothbrushes and toothpaste, bath soap and deodorant are easy to pick up while shopping. Blessing bags and homeless shelters need these items year-round. If you’re involved in meetings, networking groups, Rotary, Kiwanis and Chambers of Commerce: everyone contributes $1 or $5 along with their business card for a drawing. The winner donates the money to the charity/non-profit of their choice. Or tack on $2 to each lunch ticket. While door prizes can be the highlight of a meeting, think of the impact a cash donation would mean to a non-profit or little league team. It’s that simple.

A WORK OF COURAGE

Linda Barrett’s book of poetry touches on the bitter and sweet experiences that shape us all. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

L

Linda Barrett was reading another woman’s poems three years ago when she realized what she needed to do with her own. Linda’s son had given her a gift of books from one of his dying patients, a self-published author, teacher, missionary and mentor. “The author of those books asked him to give them to me when he told her, ‘My mom also writes poetry, mentors, teaches and has been on several missionary journeys,’” Linda says. As she read the author’s poems and short stories, one titled “Only the Ice Cream Shows” registered as familiar. Linda realized she had heard the author read the poem nearly 10 years earlier at the Heardmont Senior Center. She tried but was unable to connect with her afterward. “As I realized how extraordinary she was, I regretted not being more persistent,” Linda says. The unexpected but welcome discoveries and the sense of regret made Linda, 67, think about her

own poems, most of which were housed only on her computer. What if the words she had penned from her heart never made it further than a folder on her desktop? What potential impact of the verses she had painstakingly crafted would be lost? She needed to preserve them in a more lasting and shareable format, just as the other woman had done. She did not want them to die unread and unpreserved. That’s when Linda decided to compile her poems into a book. Several friends she had shared her writings with offered to financially support the project, which to Linda spoke volumes of confirmation that she was doing the right thing. She spent much of 2018 working on what would become Vinaigrette: Because Life is Bitter and Sweet, a self-published collection of poems, reflections and perspectives that, in her words, “presents this bitter/sweet reality in which we

live—our vinaigrette.” “We live in a bittersweet world. We long for the sweet. We do whatever we can to obtain it and grasp and cling to it when it comes near. However, sorrow, sin, fear, and doubt are also features of our lives,” Linda writes in her book’s foreword. “My prayer is that the honesty of my conflicting emotions in these poems will help you fully embrace the oil and vinegar of your own dazzlingly mysterious life.” Honesty is, indeed, at the forefront of Linda’s work. She admits in Vinaigrette her distaste for most of the poetry she was first introduced to in the fifth grade. But she gave it another chance in high school, during a Baptist youth retreat, and has clung tightly to it ever since. “After that retreat, poetry became a new friend,” Linda writes. “That began my use of poetry to reflect about life and to process the many conflicting emotions I experience.” Her Christian faith guides all aspects of her life, including her writing. A quick perusal of Vinaigrette is all the proof you need. She starts each chapter in the book with a prayer related to the topics therein. The poems come next, followed by groupings of Biblw verses and questions readers can tie back to the content of the poems. Linda designed Vinaigrette to be as versatile and fluid as its readers might need it to be; that is, it can be read simply as a book of poetry, consumed as a 12-week devotional or used as a guide in a small-group discussion with an emphasis on God’s Word in the “Personal Reflections” sections. The book is the product of Linda’s experiences in different phases, different seasons. She and her husband, Raymond, were married in 1972 and traveled for the next 20 years while he was in the Army. His last tour brought them to Birmingham, close to Linda’s siblings. “It was a blessing to come home to family,” she says. Their extensive traveling ushered in a variety of career roles for Linda, from school secretary to administrative assistant and more. “I’ve done everything from park cars to drafting for a building company,” she says. Add teaching and fundraising work to the list. The mother of three has also been active in the Christian ministry for most of her life as a teacher, women’s mentor and speaker. She is working on her graduate certificate in spiritual direction from Richmont Graduate University in Atlanta. “My heart, in general, is to point people to Christ in some way,” she says. “That motivates most of my labor – Christ and his love, his glory and his majesty.” Linda says some people describe the work of a spiritual mentor as “holy listening,” or listening to someone who is longing for more spiritually. “They need some direction, or maybe they need help in knowing they’re hearing the voice of God,” she says, noting she tries to stay in the background. “It’s more of, ‘I’m with you, let’s pray and seek the Lord together and see what the Lord says to you.’” Like her career background, Linda’s writing has not been confined to any one medium. About 10 years ago, she started a

blog on WordPress called An Invitation to Wonder. She has had devotion articles featured in two editions of a print publication called The Upper Room, and she and Holly Mackle co-authored a book titled Engaging Motherhood: Heart Preparation for a Holy Calling in 2016. Vinaigrette officially joined the group in January 2019. Linda’s joy was palpable. “I had a book reveal and served everybody dinner and read from the book,” she recalls. “It was a moment that I felt more like myself than I had ever felt in my life, acknowledging that I was God’s poem and He had given me the

privilege about writing about Him. It’s a work of courage.” And, although pain and suffering aren’t pleasant, Linda hopes her book will encourage people to be more transparent about their trials, even if it’s only to themselves. “We face suffering, and we can either deny it or just live fully in it. God is present always even in sorrow and in the joy,” she says. Simply put, the poems that fill Vinaigrette are raw and real—they are the good, the bad and the ugly, Linda says, like the experiences that make up life for all of us. They are both bitter and sweet.

In addition to Vinaigrette, Linda Barrett has written articles featured in a print publication called The Upper Room, and she and Holly Mackle co-authored the book Engaging Motherhood: Heart Preparation for a Holy Calling in 2016.

Transformation Stories Recommendations from

Linda Barrett Published Author

Every novel includes a story of transformation. It’s one of a novel’s key components. The heroes face problems, find mentors, and over the course of the book, they are changed. Every life includes a similar story of transformation—some go toward darkness and others toward light. However, most of us long to be transformed into better people. I picked these novels because of their exquisite writing and their powerful stories. The non-fiction books and allegory have been transformative. I’ve read all selections multiple times.

Hinds’ Feet on High Places

by Hannah Hurnard (an allegory) The Shepherd invites Much-Afraid to journey to the High Places to escape her oppressive Fearing relatives. He gives her two unwelcome companions, Sorrow and Suffering. Frightening and discouraging obstacles dampen her journey, but with each trial, she discovers something about herself and the Shepherd. She matures in the process.

The Chosen

by Chaim Potok In the 1940s, the sons of a Hassidic rabbi and an Orthodox teacher and humanitarian form an unlikely friendship after one son intentionally injures the other. Strained father-son relationships move toward understanding, and friendships, futures and nations transform before your eyes.

The Divine Conspiracy

by Dallas Willard Jesus preached, “the Kingdom of God” is at hand. Willard’s insight into what Jesus taught has transformed many minds and hearts since this book was written 22 years ago. The kingdom isn’t just heaven. Christ means for us to begin an “eternal-kind-of-life” now. Christianity isn’t just social justice or sin management; it’s following Jesus.

The Gift of Being Yourself

by David Benner Over the years, we create a false self we present to the world so we feel safe, important or special. It’s a façade. The best gift we can bring to the world is the real “I” behind the disguise. That part has gifts, quirks and personality—it’s perfectly accepted, made in the image of God, and waiting to be awakened and unleashed as a blessing to the world by God’s mercy, grace and love.

The Invention of Wings

by Sue Monk Kidd In the 1840s South, two young girls (both with cultural obstacles) become friends when one is given to the other as a birthday gift. Social impediments make the friendship challenging. However, both women stand against injustice in their spheres. As they do, they are altered and find freedom. (This is a fictionalized account about abolitionist Sarah Grimke.)

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

COLLECTIVE SPIRIT

The Artist Member and Pottery Collective exhibit will kick off the Shelby County Arts Council’s summer programming. STORY AND PHOTO BY LINDSAY DYESS The Shelby County Arts Council is gearing up for a summer of creative fun starting in May. Get inspired this summer with something the whole family will enjoy. Join us in the EBSCO Fine Art Gallery at the Shelby County Arts Center on Sunday, May 17, for the Artist Member and Pottery Collective Art Exhibit. The exhibit highlights the talents of the SCAC community of artists and the Pottery Collective Guild. The Pottery Collective is group of pottery artists who originally started as students at the Shelby County Arts Council. The group works together to support and inspire one another in their own unique style. Their work ranges from beautiful, functional bowls and mugs, to artwork to be admired. The Artist Members bring their original photographs, sculptures, paintings and much more to the exhibit celebrating our local talent. The opening gallery reception and pottery sale will be held May 17 from 1-4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Summer at the SCAC also means the return of summer camps. June brings back the Missoula Children’s Theatre Camp. This year, the play will be The Emperor’s New Clothes. In this play, the Emperor will learn the meaning of true friendship and how to dress for success. Campers will put on a full-scale play in just one week in this camp. The play is complete with scenery, songs, costumes and more. Not only does this camp teach public speaking skills, it reinforces memorization with music and repetition and teaches kids how to work together. Campers will also participate in arts and crafts activities. The cost is $100 per student and is designed for kids entering first grade through 12th grade. Space is limited. The camp will take place at Shelby County High School, located at 101 Washington St. in Columbiana, from June 15-20 with the performance on Saturday, June 20. There is always something fun happening at the Shelby County Arts Council. For more information on all summer camps and for registration, visit Shelbycountyartscouncil.com. SERVING COMFORT Ashley Mac’s gourmet-to-go meals are as convenient and delicious as ever—especially in the days of COVID-19. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

A

As the COVID-19 quarantine started to affect restaurants, Ashley McMakin knew she couldn’t necessarily change the wider circumstances, but she and her team at Ashley Mac’s could help deliver comfort to the dinner table. “I think food naturally brings people together so most people have good memories of a meal around the table and the particular comfort food brings,” she says. “Being able to still have a good meal reminds you that life is going to be okay and bring some normalcy to things when everything feels like it’s going to spin out of

control.” And so even as their dining rooms closed, the Ashley Mac’s team offered up all of their gourmet to-go items that almost seem like they were designed for a time like this, with frozen casseroles, soups, sides and desserts, plus their refrigerator case with items like chicken salad and broccoli slaw. They brought their takeout model curbside, kept six feet between their employees and started offering a delivery option. When Ashley saw their surplus of produce from

all their previously scheduled catering orders, the restaurant started selling produce boxes that quickly sold out. One night at 2 a.m. she was thinking about how her kids can’t see their grandparents even though they are in town and added a fun pack of kidfriendly foods grandparents could send to their grandkids, plus a Sweets for Your Sanity pack with moms in mind—all in an effort to get creative with delivering their menu to what people were wanting as they spent time at home. something to look forward to at the end of the day—especially when working from home and/or home schooling kids as is many of her neighbors’ reality this spring. “It is something comforting whether it’s baking your old childhood recipe or ordering take-out from a local business,” she says. In all of this, Ashley was no stranger to rapidly adapting a business to demand. For her the past 15 years in the food business have gone by in the blink of an eye. Back when she and her husband were living in a condo complex in 2005 as newlyweds, Ashley was cooking and catering out of her tiny kitchen when they met their new downstairs neighbor. “Do you need a job?” Ashley’s husband, Andy, asked the neighbor. And with that, they had their first employee. The neighbor would walk upstairs to meet Ashley, and they’d drive to Sam’s Club to buy their supplies and get to work on catering parties of up to 50. In that era Ashley used family recipes for sour cream biscuits, strawberry cake and casseroles and added her own concoctions to the mix by trial and error with inspiration from travel, eating out and magazines. From there, Ashley and the neighbor would commute to a new kitchen space in Bluff Park. When catering customers started asking for small portions of casseroles, she’d portion them and leave them in a small refrigerator. As demand grew, she opened a little room in the bottom of her grandmother’s antique store in Cahaba Heights to be a pickup spot. Eventually Ashley Mac’s found a storefront in Cahaba Heights that had a kitchen and seating in the front. Ashley’s plan was never to open a restaurant, just to cater. But Andy, an accountant, thought something needed to be done with the extra space, so he convinced his wife to open a café. When it first opened, the menu was written on a scratch piece of paper with signature items you can still order at Ashley Mac’s today: Baby Blue Salad, Chicken Salad, Turkey & Spinach Aioli and Apple Havarti sandwiches and the Salad Trio. As the McMakin family grew from one child to two to three, they expanded their café to Inverness right off Valleydale Road in January 2013, and later they opened Riverchase and finally Homewood locations. Those first five years Ashley was cooking 10 hours a day and so exhausted by the end that she’d just bring home an Ashley Mac’s dish or get takeout for dinner. Later when her kids were babies she took a step back from the business and cooked more at home, experimenting with recipes that would later make it to the Ashley Mac’s menu. These days with kids in elementary school and a full schedule of after-school activities, she finds herself picking up Ashley Mac’s frozen meals and soups for dinner again. It’s part of why she started offering a set of family meals— poppy seed chicken, lemon rosemary chicken or steak—you can call an hour ahead to order hot too, for those nights when a family needs dinner fast, and not the kind that requires

defrosting. “As a busy mom I can relate to that,” she says. “Everyone has a lot going on. We are really focused on convenience for people but also not sacrificing great ingredients and food.” Before the pandemic, Ashley had never thought of putting a barbecue chicken pizza she makes at home on the menu, but the longer families were at home, the more she thought about different offerings for customers and decided to try it, along with a four cheese flavor her kids prefer. “I felt complimented when they said it was better than Little Caesar’s,” she says. looking for her food business to fill needs. A few years ago when she got involved in a mentorship program at Cahaba Park Church called Jobs for Life, she started thinking about how to employ people with difficult pasts. Before long they began to partner with Changed Lives halfway house to give jobs to men who lived there, and today many of their staff members have come out of that program. “That’s become close to our hearts over the years,” Ashley says. And now those men are a part of another mission closer to Ashley’s heart: sharing comforting, fresh food to help families through busy weeknights and weeks of quarantine alike.

THE DOGWOOD HOUSE The Blake family built the home of their dreams, and filled it with family heirlooms. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY JEREMY RAINES ShelbyLiving.com

Emily and Andrew Blake love how the openconcept layout they chose for the North Shelby home they built in 2019 gives them the breathing room their family of five needs and the space they want when they entertain guests. They love the casual yet sophisticated, farmhouse-inspired décor, and the different tones of gray that set a relaxed tone for most of the rooms. But, perhaps more than anything else, they love the sweet reminders of their family roots planted in nearly every space—the photographs and the furniture that have been passed down to them from the people who shaped their lives before they met each other. For Emily, these roots trace all the way over to England, her late parents’ native country and the birth place of her three siblings. “I’m the youngest of four and was the only one to be born in the States,” she says. “My parents and siblings moved to the States in 1978, and I was born a few years later.” A Birmingham native, Andrew’s mother is Lebanese, and his father is American. He and

Emily met as students at the University of Alabama and married nine years ago. They moved into the Ballantrae development in 2010. But when Emily’s mother passed away in August 2014, a new project seemed like a good salve in the midst of her grief. “I needed an outlet, so I began searching for new homes and land in the Indian Springs area,” she says. “After many visits to various lots, we found this location and fell in love with the 2 acres.” Tragedy struck again when Emily’s father passed away in November 2017. It was enough to nudge Emily and Andrew into action with their home plans. “We felt it was time to put our dreams into reality, and purchased the land in March 2018. After months of planning, we were able to start working on and creating our dream layout with Home by Mae Beth. Then, Carlisle Creek Construction broke ground in May 2019. Just six months later, we moved into our new home.” They refer to it as the Dogwood House, a nod to a dogwood tree Andrew planted in the front yard to grow and blossom alongside their family.

Dining Room One piece Emily inherited from her parents is the china cabinet, which she refreshed with chalk paint and placed in the dining room.

Entryway The pièce de rÊsistance of the foyer is the nearly 70-year-old Metzler piano, passed down to Emily from her parents.

Living Room Emily says her varied tastes in interior style made it difficult to commit to just one. “This house has many features of the houses I grew up in Alpharetta, Georgia, and North Andover, Massachusetts,” she says. “I wanted to honor my parents the best way I could with this build. I would say it’s a farmhouse with craftsman flare, and a traditional twist on the interior.”

Kitchen The Blakes gravitate to their spacious kitchen every day for cooking and entertaining around the large granite island. Andrew chose the large window above the sink that gives them an unobstructed view of the backyard. ShelbyLiving.com

Guest Bathroom Emily’s favorite room in the house is the guest bathroom, a small but vibrant space doused in SherwinWilliams’ Lucky Green. “I wanted it to have a funky flare, and it’s filled with old pictures of our families, making you feel like you’re in a swanky restroom in a French or English restaurant,” she says. One of the photos is of Emily’s grandmother meeting the Queen of England.

Master Bedroom The master bedroom features several of Emily’s parents’ furniture pieces she inherited and refinished, including a pair of their chairs.

Office The same shade of green in the guest bathroom upstairs makes an appearance in the office, which she converted into a makeshift school room for the kids when the novel coronavirus pandemic prompted school closures. “We had this table, and I wanted a space for the kids to be able to work,” she says. Girl’s Room The couple’s only daughter, Ella, has her own room, a cheery space with a chandelier and bright curtains Emily made for her.

Boys’ Rooms The couple’s sons, Charlie and Dexter, have their own rooms, but often end up sleeping in the bunk beds in Dexter’s room.

Playroom The downstairs playroom features a nook where the Blake children can hang their backpacks and jackets when they come home from school.

CHANGE OF PLANS CARLIE MOORE AND HUNTER BILLINGSLEY AREN’T LETTING COVID-19 HAVE THE LAST WORD IN THEIR WEDDING. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

Hopefully, it will feel like the wedding day I still always wanted, but we’ll already be married. -Carlie Moore

38 May/June 2020

T

They could not believe months of meticulous planning had come to this. Neither could their families and friends. Then again, neither could the many other couples like them, they were sure. Couples who grappled with the same difficult realization when the novel coronavirus pandemic took hold in the United States: Their wedding plans would have to change. Shelby County native Carlie Moore and her fiancé, Hunter Billingsley, are reluctant members of this group, not as much by choice as sheer necessity in light of the rapid spread and growing threat of COVID-19. In the parade of large and small decisions preceding a wedding, they never imagined they would need to decide whether to postpone their celebration. But as the virus picked up steam here in early March, that’s exactly what happened. As they shifted their focus to new plans, Carlie opened up about her experiences with wedding planning round two in the days of COVID-19—and, more importantly, the love story that gave greater purpose to the moments of disappointment she and Hunter faced.

shortly before nursing school graduation, after which Carlie moved back to the Birmingham area. Hunter moved here in January 2016, but despite geography being on their side again, the couple broke up and stayed apart for more than a year. “It probably was good for both of us to do our own thing,” Carlie says. “After that I randomly reached out to him and asked him to go to lunch.” That lunch led to another lunch, and then another, until Carlie and Hunter were asking themselves—and each other—why they weren’t together. They fixed that in August 2017 and became a couple again. Two years later, on a hot September morning, Hunter pulled an engagement ring out of a backpack and proposed to Carlie during a rock climbing outing at Cherokee Rock Village. “It was the best day,” she says. Carlie jumped into wedding planning immediately, firming up the big details like venue and photographer first, and then gradually checking off the smaller ones. She and Hunter set their wedding date for April 11, 2020. A spring wedding sounded lovely.

AT THE START

AT A CROSSROADS

Carlie first saw Hunter from across the room in one of their nursing school classes at Southern Union State Community College. “I thought he was cute,” she says. But that was as far as it went until, in their final semester of nursing school, several of Carlie’s and Hunter’s friends took it upon themselves to orchestrate an outing so they could officially meet each other. They started dating

As February faded into March and Carlie worked on her final wedding checklist, she started hearing more about the novel coronavirus at work. As a nurse in Grandview Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit, Carlie and her coworkers were receiving updates about COVID-19 daily. When she learned that travel restrictions were being put in place, her mind went straight to hers and Hunter’s

honeymoon plans in Hawaii. “My first thought was our honeymoon might get canceled,” she says, “but it had never crossed my mind that the wedding might have to be postponed.” When Carlie heard about another couple’s wedding being postponed, panic overcame her. “It was like a whirlwind,” she recalls. “All of a sudden, Hunter and I were having to make that decision. It just all happened so suddenly.” After talking to their parents and weighing their options, Carlie and Hunter came up with alternate plans in a roughly 48-hour timeframe. They opted to reschedule the full ceremony and reception with guests for October 3, but to still have a small ceremony with only immediate family members in Carlie’s grandparents’ front yard on April 11. Carlie’s grandfather was set to officiate the intimate ceremony. 40 May/June 2020

Several of the vendors the couple had originally booked were unavailable for October 3, and they were worried about guests having the same issue. But Carlie says most people have eagerly accepted the new date. Her wedding dress presented another dilemma for her. “That was also something I was having a hard time dealing with. Was I going to have that walking-down-the-aisle moment? Other than marrying Hunter, I was most excited about wearing the dress.” She decided to wear a different dress for the April 11 ceremony and save her real dress for October 3, when she can have her grand moment, complete with a first look before the ceremony. “Hopefully, it will feel like the wedding day I still always wanted, but we’ll already be married,” Carlie says. “And we

won’t have such high expectations because we didn’t worry about all the details. I’m trying to stay positive.” LOOKING FORWARD Carlie and Hunter are in the process of renovating a house they bought in Chelsea about six months ago. Outside of wedding plans and work, the house has absorbed much of their spare time, and Hunter has done the majority of the labor himself. The house sits on three-and-a-half-acres of land, which they want to fill with goats, chickens and other animals they might acquire. “That’s our goal,” Carlie says. “I feel like we’re in the home stretch. We’re finishing painting and about to lay down new floors.” Although they had to cancel their honeymoon trip to Hawaii, they plan to reschedule it for later this year or sometime next year, maybe as a oneyear anniversary trip. Regardless, Carlie says she and Hunter are looking forward to taking a breather from what’s been a stressful few months and enjoy being married to each other. “At the end of this, it’s all going to come out better,” she says. “God has a bigger plan. We’re just trying to make the best of it.”

SOMEBODY TO LEAN ON ACTS OF KINDNESS HAVE RESTORED HOPE IN OUR COMMUNITY DURING COVID-19. BY EMILY SPARACINO | PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY AND CONTRIBUTED The far-reaching impact of the novel coronavirus was for a while difficult to grasp, and perhaps it still is for many as we heed orders to shelter in place and keep to ourselves. School campuses sit eerily quiet, shop doors remain locked and delivery vehicles shuttling food orders from restaurants to residences populate the roads. For some people, COVID-19 has cost them their health, their jobs, their businesses. For most, it has taken normalcy and replaced it with uncertainty, maybe even fear. But in the shadow of the virus, we have seen light. We have seen neighbors helping neighbors and strangers helping strangers, people putting the resources they have toward helping another family with basic needs. We have seen the emergence of help exchange pages on social media, and heard of unsung heroes calling to check on elderly residents who can’t leave their homes. It’s these acts of kindness and gestures of support in our community we cling to for hope in this challenging time.

Chubbfathers owner Will Cholewinski helps to pack free food bags at his restaurant to distribute to residents in need.

BEING BUDDIES As the virus ramped up and prompted the closure of all public schools in mid-March, Vineyard Family Services jumped into action. VFS provides local students with nutritious food they can take home on the weekends and long holiday breaks, filling the gaps when children don’t have access to their schools’ free and reduced meal programs. But the organization knew students wouldn’t be the only ones affected by food insecurity. “We have families with lots of children, and everybody is not being able to work,” Program Director Stephanie Grissom says. Along with the buddy bags, VFS focused on assembling more of their family emergency food boxes and hygiene bags. Volunteers have helped load and unload bags and boxes for deliveries, and donors have ensured VFS’s ability to purchase needed supplies doesn’t falter. And help has come from people of varying ages, even children. Local twins hosted a food drive 44 May/June 2020

recently and, in lieu of birthday presents, asked for food and financial donations for BackPack Buddies. “You put a smile on our faces,” reads a post on the VFS Facebook page. FEEDING THE PEOPLE Knowing his slogan is “feed the people,” we weren’t surprised when Chubbfathers restaurant owner Will Cholewinski’s name came up in conversations about who was mobilizing resources for families in need during the pandemic. Will turned his Alabaster and Clanton restaurants into drop zones for food donations to distribute immediately to families trying to make ends meet and keep food on the table. Will issued a call for donations, urging people not only to give what they can but to let anyone in need know that help is nearby. “We’re just trying to do whatever we can do,” Will says. “We’re going to get through this together.”

Kylie Anderson picks up baked goods to deliver to workers at busy stores that are dealing with unusual hours because of COVID-19.

LIFTING SPIRITS Pelham resident Kylie Anderson took it upon herself to buy and organize supplies to hand out at different locations in the area—and to deliver right to people’s doorsteps, if necessary. “I’ve driven to a lot of people’s homes and dropped off supplies at their doors,” she says. Her mind goes to people battling cancer, elderly people, single moms—people who can’t leave their homes. Kylie has distributed everything from toilet paper to water to snacks to soap, checking multiple stores in the area to find certain items that sell out quickly. And as she made her supply runs, Kylie noticed the struggles store employees are facing while trying to do their jobs. “I’ve seen the way some of these retail employees have been treated, and it’s really hurting my heart,” she says. “I’ve heard people cussing at them and calling them names, and I just really wanted to lift them up.” So she bought treats from a local business and delivered them to these people, thinking she could

lift their spirits and remind them that what they’re doing is appreciated. SPECIAL DELIVERIES City of Columbiana employee Dale Lucas wanted to help elderly and immunocompromised residents somehow during COVID-19. What better way than through food? Dale and a group of volunteers collected more than $1,000 in donations to purchase Boston butts from Piggly Wiggly, and then stayed up all night one night cooking them before delivering them to people’s houses the next afternoon. Hearing how grateful they were for the free, home-cooked and hand-delivered meat, however, was worth missing some sleep. “We’re just a group of people trying to help out,” Dale says. “It went really well.”

We work tirelessly to help kids get well because Hugh has a long list of stuff he wants to do. WE DO WHAT WE DO BECAUSE CHILDREN HAVE DREAMS.

KEEPING THEM COVERED A shortage of medical masks for health care workers prompted locals to put their ingenuity and resources to work. Deedra George, owner of By George screen printing, embroidery and alterations shop in Helena, rounded up her materials and staff and launched a mask-making operation. “Things change on a daily basis, so we’re just trying to be flexible and take care of as many people as we can,” she says. “It’s a good distraction for me, to not dwell on the bad stuff and try to do something positive.” Similar efforts took off in Montevallo, too, when a group of University of Montevallo employees partnered to combat the national shortage of personal protective equipment, including face masks. After reading about people using 3D printers to create PPEs to donate to health care facilities, Michael Price, the Digital Media and Emerging Technologies Librarian at UM’s Carmichael Library, reached out to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, which said it would be happy to accept the 3D printed face masks. Michael then contacted his colleague Kyle Moore, assistant professor of theatre at UM, who also had access to a 3D printer. The duo received support from Dr. David Callaghan, chair of UM’s Department of Theatre, Carmichael Library Director Dr. Charlotte Ford and UM Associate Professor of Theatre Emily Gill, who helped to secure material to use for straps on the face masks. The group set a goal to print and deliver 50 ready-to-use face masks to the hospital.

Stroke: Act F.A.S.T. BE FAST Swimming, biking and running are just three of the many sports in which the winner has the fastest time. In other sports such as football, basketball or volleyball, the winners are determined after a set period of time. When it comes to having a stroke, the person who seeks treatment in the fastest time possible can be a winner in the game of life. That’s because the faster blood flow is restored to the brain, the lower the risk of disability or death. A stroke, also known as a brain attack, occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted or blocked. When this happens, brain cells in the immediate area start to die because they do not get the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly. Disabilities that can result from a stroke include paralysis, cognitive deficits, speech and emotional problems, pain and numbness. Approximately 87 percent of strokes are ischemic1, which means they occur when a clot blocks a blood vessel or artery in the brain. The remaining percentage of strokes is hemorrhagic. These strokes are caused by a blood vessel that breaks and bleeds into the brain. Symptoms of a stroke are easy to spot because they happen quickly. It is important to act F.A.S.T. in these situations because the most effective treatments for stroke are available only within the first three hours after symptoms start. Look for the following signs of a stroke: uBalance – Loss of balance or coordination, dizziness uEyes - Blurry, double or loss of vision in one eye uFace – Does one side of the person’s face droop when you ask them to smile? uArms – Does one arm drift down-

ward when you ask the person to raise both arms? uSpeech – Does the person slur speech when asked to repeat a simple phrase? uTime – Call 9-1-1 immediately if you see any of these signs. If you or someone you know is having a stroke, be prepared to act promptly if there is sudden: uNumbness in the arm, leg or face, especially if it is on one side of the body. uConfusion, difficulty talking or problems understanding speech. uTrouble seeing out of one or both eyes. u Difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination. uIntense headache for no known reason. It is important not to wait for symptoms to go away or worsen. Ischemic strokes can be treated with a clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator, or t-PA. However, for the treatment to be effective, the stroke patient must get to a hospital within one hour, and be evaluated and receive the drug within three hours of the onset of stroke symptoms. A study by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke found that some patients receiving t-PA within the three-hour window were at least 30 percent more likely to recover from a stroke after 90 days. Risk factors that can increase the chances of having a stroke include high blood pressure, heart disease, smoking, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and elevated cholesterol. For more information about treating strokes, talk with your doctor or visit the National Stroke Association website at www.stroke.org.

MY SHELBY COUNTY

JAMIA ALEXANDER-WILLIAMS Alabaster BOE Member + Angel Warriors Foundation Founder

Friday Night Lights

There is nothing like football in the South. Larry Simmons Stadium will always be one of my favorite places in Alabaster. I loved watching Jabari play football with his friends and Tori perform with her dance team in middle school at the old THS stadium.

Shopping Local

Frou Frou’s and The Sassy Shopper have the cutest things for everyone, and they support my mission for Angel Warriors Foundation. I also love Glitz & Gowns, and when I want to wear bling on my shirts, I go to BeDazzle Me More. I use Alabaster Trophy Company for my plaques or medals, and Monograms N More and Belle of the Ball for monogramming.

A+ Schools

I love the new Thompson High School and stadium. I enjoy walking the halls, seeing my girls and all the students excited about the new opportunities that came with our new school. Our leaders are so engaged and determined to help make sure each student is successful. Thank you, ACS!

Home in Alabaster

I love the city I live, work, worship and play in. We are big, but we are small. We love and take care of one another. When one person or family hurts, we all hurt. There is no place I would rather raise my family in.

Getting Outside

Alabaster has the best parks. I love the fact that our kids take pictures at Veterans Park and Buck Creek for homecoming and prom. But most importantly, we have walking trails. Angel Warriors Foundation is currently installing a sensory trail at Buck Creek Park on the walking trail where everyone, especially our special needs families, can go and enjoy not only the trail but also the activities that are designed to stimulate their sensory awareness.
