For the Love of the Game

Spring is at its best as I write this, with bright, sunny rays breaking through crisp air, but I can’t help but think back to that day in late March when the season showed its ugliest side. And I’m not talking about pollen. Like many of you, I was glued to a screen just after lunch on March 25 as James Spann spoke with alarm about polygons and paths. Sure, I’d watched Spann guide me through every severe Alabama storm between the time he talked to my school when I was in fourth grade and now, but never before had he told me a tornado was heading straight toward my parents’ house off Highway 280, and toward his own home where his wife was. It was beyond eerie watching from outside the polygon and not knowing what was really happening on the ground. Thankfully my parents’ neighborhood was spared, but I quickly learned how many around them were not. Majestic green trees I’d long admired as I drove up Double Oak Mountain had pummeled—and sometimes flattened—homes I’d driven past to babysit and visit friends growing up. Similar damage stretched from Helena up to Shoal Creek, and later parts of Columbiana and Calera suffered a similar fate. It makes me sick thinking back to the images of destruction that are now seared in my mind from the moments they’d popped up in social media feeds as my colleagues at our sister publication the Shelby County Reporter posted them. But then with cleanup the reminder of just how strong community shows itself to be in the literal storms of life. We share some of your stories about that on our The Question answers on page 6, and I know there are countless more out there. We also share a poem, “The Unshaken Pot,” by Eagle Point resident Rej Vedula written after the storm on page 9. Most of this issue was already complete when the tornadoes came through, so in some ways it feels weird to share our usual collection of what I call “pretty, happy” stories with you in the wake of such devastation. But look closer at them, and you’ll read of the struggles that accompany the triumphs for people like Major League Baseball player Edgar Olmos, who is now a coach in Chelsea. And amidst the tragedy around us, beauty still shines bright like spring sunshine in homes and businesses around us, and that’s just what you’ll find in the pages ahead. As always, thanks for reading, and I always love to hear your ideas for stories we should cover in future issues!

“ ” THE QUESTION

How have you seen the power of community in the days following the March 25 tornadoes? Within hours neighbors had made a path for vehicles to get through so that clean up could begin. Columbiana immediately began to take care of their own on multiple fronts.

Almost instantly, Valleydale Church, Greystone YMCA and Asbury Church have literally swooped in immediately to put together ALL day programs (school hours) for our children.

It was amazing seeing so many people pull together. From scouts, to city administration, to faithbased organizations, to citizens in general. It was amazing!

Yesterday a call went out that an elderly family had to pack and be out of there house within like 48 hours. Packing supplies appeared from all over. Volunteers appeared and packed.

COMMUNITY

THE UNSHAKEN POT Eagle Point resident Raj Vedula shared this poem he wrote after the March 25 tornado that hit his neighborhood and surrounding areas. This is not a very pretty pot now but there is much to learn from a pot so broken but the life it holds remains calm In a fateful turn of things nature sought to choose the other side The power was fierce that left a trail of tears The winds were harsh and wild and brought upon an undesired fate Memories of memories are what remain beneath the piles of broken dreams Such is the beauty of life, glory and pomp aside New memories of kindness from friends and strangers alike The boundaries were broken and the feelings shared for the loss is the same for all Nevertheless the pot survives for its seen the worst of all.

A PANDEMIC PLAY

A staged reading production of Stick Fly took on the stage at the University of Montevallo—masks included. BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE PHOTOS BY JESSICA SULLIVAN ShelbyLiving.com

L

embody someone who has the same ethnicity as me. I didn’t have to imagine what it would be like if the character was black. She already was, and that was a freeing and validating experience to play someone who is like me and discusses the black experience. Emily: My favorite part of every show is to talk with directors and performers—what they think, what work they are doing, what images or other materials inspire them. What was most enjoyable and valuable about Stick Fly particularly was director Chalethia Williams’s perspective on the story, characters and process. Chalethia: My favorite part was working with all of the students and faculty to see this production What did you enjoy most about your role in through to closing night. And that new space is fantastic (read more about it in the sidebar on Stick Fly? Labrina: My favorite part was getting to page 14). Like much of what happened in the past year, the University of Montevallo’s latest theatre production didn’t quite look like “normal.” For their first production since the start of the pandemic, Stick Fly by Lydia R. Diamond tackled issues of gender, class, race and privilege in a searing way—all performed with masks and social distance. The play was directed by guest artist Chalethia Williams from Miles College, and to learn more about the experience we talked with her as well as Emily Gill, costume designer and associate professor of theatre and costume design, and Labrina Riles, a senior theatre major who played Taylor Bradley-Scott.

14 May/June 2021

Amanda Watson and Labrina Riles perform a staged reading of Stick Fly with masks and social distance at the University of Montevallo.

How did this production look different than usual during COVID times? Labrina: The production was a full-staged reading. A staged reading is like doing a full show but with the scripts on stage with limited movement. We still had costumes, but spacing was mostly 6 feet, wearing masks—which are very hard to articulate in — and there were no shared props at all. Chalethia: The look was different in that the characters had no physical contact, and it was billed as a stage reading to let audiences know that it would look different. So, the audience had to work harder to see the picture that the actors were working just as hard to make them see only, for the most part, through the words of Ms. Diamond.

Emily: In terms of the creative process, not very different. In terms of realization, there were some special considerations with reference to a number of changes. This is the type of play where, traditionally, the costumes not only define characters in place, but the changes in family dynamics over the course of the long weekend. I made the call early that student-crew-assisted changes were out. Something that was missing to a degree is the pre-show environment for performers. Usually, they can warm up together, chat, run lines—and the energy translates to stage. After the rehearsal weekend, seeing how glum it was compared to the usual excited environment, we found a nice space where they could gather properly distanced to try to bring some of that back. A STAGE WITH A STORY \The University of Montevallo opened its new Center for the Arts in time for fall classes last year. The 36,750-square-foot building serves students in the College of Fine Arts department, including art, music and theatre, communication and dance — something senior Labrina Riles is especially excited about. “I’m also a dancer, so now having access to a dance facility is so helpful for putting

dance

reels

together and

just improving technique,” Riles says. The new center gave classes the space needed to provide socially distant learning options, says Emily Gill. It also provided room backstage that COVID protocol required for the Stick Fly production. “It’s more than ‘creature comforts’ we gained in this building. It was the ability to operate at all,” Emily says. “I think there was some wincing at opening a giant gathering space just in time for gatherings to be restricted, but in truth, it was ‘right on time’ in the local

Actor Jonathan Everheart

parlance.” The stage in the Center of the Arts will be named after alumna Rebecca Luker, a UM graduate who led a lengthy career as a Broadway actress. Rebecca, who passed away in 2020, earned multiple Tony Award nominations for her roles, while also remaining involved with UM. “I think her approach to her art with dedication, sensitivity, and — later after her successes — a sense of lifting up those on the rise are qualities we can emulate in all disciplines,” says Emily, who

remembers

hearing

Rebecca’s

commencement address at UM.

16 May/June 2021

Conversely, how did the production look similar to productions from pre-COVID times? Labrina: Honestly, I was so amazed at the set and costumes. In usual staged readings, you don’t get a full set, and you’re usually dressed in all black. The costumes, set and lights truly brought it together for the audiences to be able to imagine our full world. Chalethia: The similarities were that the words are the words with or without moving—or blocking, as it is called. So, the task was to direct the students to paint the picture with the dialogue more through their delivery, some body movement and abovethe-mask gestures. I used the term, “eye acting.” It was a bit of a challenge, but I felt that as long as the students believed and committed to the story, the audience would believe and get it. Emily: The students working on the production, performing and in the department at large worked and supported the staged reading the same as a full production. I’m not surprised because

of the type of student we have at UM Theatre, but I think given the extended energies needed to complete classes, extra steps for prep, extra calls and all kinds of new processes, it would have been easy to relax, but they didn’t. What do you hope audiences left thinking or feeling? Labrina: There are so many small gems in the story that bring up class dynamics, race, interracial dating, identity and familial turmoil. Overall, I hope we told the story well enough to where each audience member left taking a piece from the story that made them either want to evaluate their own thinking of people or gave them something to hold onto every day as they go through life. Personally, two of those takeaway moments happened with the dad character. He says, “Find a man that hasn’t made mistakes and then you judge,” and, “No one can make you feel inferior.” Emily: I hope they learned a new author to seek out in future plays to attend and read. I hope that audiences felt represented by the stories and images we created collaboratively. I hope everyone expanded their knowledge of modern social discussions and continued those discussions after leaving our building, and finally, I hope they enjoyed the performances. ShelbyLiving.com

17

Emily: I hope we don’t abandon virtual access events because I feel a positive effect of this situation is in more remote areas. We have access to a greater diversity of content and forms. I hope we can remember the positive aspects of being apart when we are together again and not just return to only the UM senior theatre major Labrina Riles, center, played Taylor Bradley-Scott in the production. accidentally exclusive models out of nostalgia. Labrina: There are Chalethia: I hope the audience left with the so many ways people have continued to keep story and the history of the story written by Ms. creating work, but safely and differently than Diamond. And that little or nothing was missed before. I can’t wait to see how it influences a new because of the masks because staged readings are era of live theatre. Chalethia: I am excited to see how the return not a new concept. to some type of normalcy happens and how the What are you most excited about with future theatre and audience have to adjust. I have no performances that will be held during post- doubt that theatre will return, but I think it will look different. pandemic times?

Faith + Mental Health Recommendations from

Steve Austin Local Author

Steve Austin was a pastor when he nearly died by suicide. But that was not the end of his story. Since 2012, the Alabaster native has written several books, including Catching Your Breath (2018), Hiding in the Pews (2021) and Slow Miracles (2022). Today, he consults church leaders on how to make their faith communities a safe place for those who are suffering. Download his free resource guide, How to Love Those with Mental Illness, at catchingyourbreath.com.

Try Softer

By Aundi Kolber In Try Softer, Aundi Kolber says, “The work of paying compassionate attention is, in a sense, learning to steward for ourselves what God already believes about us—that we’re valuable and loved.” If you have been indoctrinated with a message that you must always try harder, dig deeper, reach higher and never show weakness, you desperately need Try Softer. Aundi Kolber’s book is the most helpful one I read in 2020 because it gave me permission to be human again. It can do the same for you.

I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die

By Sara J. Robinson For anyone living with mental illness who has been shamed into thinking that their mental illness somehow makes them less than a full Christian, let me introduce you to one of my dearest friends, Sarah J. Robinson. With great courage and vulnerability, Sarah’s book will guide you toward a God who is “present in our deepest anguish,” helping you find the strength to fight for your own healing. This book publishes on May 11, 2021. Learn more at SarahJRobinson.com/book.

The Great Belonging

By Charlotte Donlon When my grandfather passed away, I immediately knew which book to add to my grandma’s to-be-read pile. Charlotte Donlon is an author and spiritual director from the Birmingham area, and if you’re looking for a way to embrace your loneliness, this is it. The Great Belonging is divided into five parts: Belonging to Ourselves, Belonging to Each Other, Belonging to Our Places, Belonging through Art and Belonging to God. Hiding in the Pews

By Steve Austin I was a pastor when I nearly died by suicide. No one knew my secret struggles with mental illness. I would have rather died than face my shame. Hiding in the Pews is a prophetic call—a clear, compassionate and practical guide—for the church to become a safe place where believers and leaders with mental illness are empowered to cultivate vulnerability in a safe, inclusive community. ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

IN THE BLACK BOX

A pottery show, Black Box Theatre concerts and more are coming to the Shelby County Arts Council as summer kicks off. BY LINDSAY DYESS PHOTO BY BERNE IMES As the world begins to open back up and a small sense of normalcy returns, the Shelby County Arts Council is getting ready for a summer of exciting Black Box Theater performances and activities! Kicking things off is the Pottery Collective and Artist Member gallery show and pottery sale on Sunday, May 2. The Pottery Collective sale returns after last year’s hiatus with beautiful handmade functional and decorative pottery created by artists who all started out as pottery students at the SCAC. After finding their niche in pottery, many of them went on to create their own home studios and create and fire work on their own. The Pottery Collective group works together to sell their work at shows around the state and even bounces around ideas and techniques with one another. Pieces for sale at this show will include bowls, vases, mugs, jewelry and more. Along with the Pottery Collective exhibit will be the Artist Members gallery show. This is a new show to highlight the talented supporting members of the Shelby County Arts Council. Their work will range from paintings to photography to 3D design and more. This gallery exhibit reception and pottery sale will be on Sunday, May 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The pottery will be cash and carry, and some of the artist members’ work will be available for purchase. This reception is opened to the public, and work will be on display until May 20. Not only will the EBSCO Fine Art Gallery be filled with beautiful work, but the Black Box Theater will also be rocking with some great shows! Back by popular demand is the masterful singer/songwriter Paul Thorn. If you missed Thorn’s last BBT performance, you will not want to miss this one. The performance will be Friday, May 21. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

20 May/June 2021

Singer songwriter Paul Thorne will perform in the Black Box Theatre on May 21.

On June 4 Tim Montana and the Shrednecks will perform for the first time in the BBT. The countryrock singer-songwriter has performed with the Foo Fighters, befriended Kid Rock and has even cowritten songs with ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons. Now he brings his unique style to music lovers of Columbiana. Get your tickets for this show now! Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at shelbycountyartscouncil.com. FAST-PITCHED JOY

Edgar Olmos is sharing his love for the game and MLB experience with young baseball players nearby. BY ASHLEY CIRILLI FARLOW PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY & CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

21

E

Edgar Olmos started playing baseball for nothing more than the love of the game. Drafted right out of high school by the Marlins, he never could have imagined the path that preceded and followed his entrance into the life of a professional baseball player—one that has primed him for giving distinctive training to young players today. Word spread fast after he began helping coach a few friends’ sons near his Chelsea home, and Blessed Baseball was born in 2020 . But it doesn’t feel like business to Edgar. “The more I coached these kids, the more it became clear it was my calling,” says Edgar, who had prayed for an opportunity to give back all he had learned in his baseball career. “I’ve been blessed to have the journey I’ve had as an athlete and wanted to do good through what God’s given me.”

22 May/June 2021

The eldest of Jesús and Marisela Olmos’ four children, Edgar’s introduction to baseball was watching his dad play in a rec league as he was growing up in the small community of Van Nuys outside Los Angeles. “I remember his joy for the game, his hustle, his big smile,” Edgar says. At the age of 4, Edgar joined a T-ball league. By age 8, he got to pitch, and this left-hander was hooked. He says back then youth baseball wasn’t the travel teams and pressures of today. He played regular seasons, and in the winter, he took a break (other than throwing in the yard with his dad). At age 12, Edgar set a goal: make the high school team—and his goal was met. “The funny thing is, once I made it, I was so nervous because I couldn’t believe I was on the team,” he says. He set a goal once again during his junior year:

play college baseball. “I never even thought about playing at a big university, just hoped to try for a local community college,” Edgar says. “It was unheard of for guys from my community to sign somewhere big, and I just didn’t know any better.” But coaches and scouts were dreaming bigger for him. Eventually up to 30 scouts were in the stands, radar guns in hand, watching for Edgar to pull back his left arm. “I didn’t put much pressure on myself though,” he says. “I just wanted to throw strikes and have fun.” Edgar went on his junior year to sign a letter of intent to pitch for the University of Arizona. But when he broke the strike-out record at his high school by a long shot his senior year, professional scouts started knocking at the family’s door. “The Marlins guy came twice a week, and now I see it

was him wanting to see my character,” Edgar recalls. “They take that into account when they’re about to have you living on your own and want to see how you handle yourself.” In June 2008, the Marlins drafted Edgar right out of high school, and he moved across the country to Jupiter, Florida, to pitch in the Gulf Coast League. In his first game, he struck out five guys, but the next day he couldn’t throw a ball. “I remember crying in the complex when they confirmed my injury, calling my dad, and we just couldn’t keep it together,” he says. “But we sprang into action. I got the surgery in LA, and then headed back to Florida.” After the rehab process, he gained 20 pounds of muscle, and he was throwing again four months later, even gaining 5 mph. ShelbyLiving.com

Jupiter wasn’t only the birthplace of Edgar’s professional career, it was also where he met his wife, Jordan, whom he married in 2014. “We’ve moved our whole lives over and over and have gone all over the place,” Edgar says. “Jordan’s ability to adapt and take the bull by the horns all while being the joy she is—she is superwoman.” See an overview of Edgar’s fast-pitched, curve-ball life in the sidebar on this spread. In 2018, with then 2- and 3-year-old daughters and a son on the way, Jordan and Edgar moved to Birmingham from Japan to put down roots near some extended family. The plan was to go back and forth to Mexico where Edgar was on the Tijuana Toros roster.

However, in 2019 at spring training, he got a familiar feeling that something was wrong—an MRI showed he’d likely been pitching for years with a tear. Edgar underwent an extensive surgery at Birmingham’s Andrews Sports Medicine and now has four anchors in his posterior labrum and also had a bicep tenodesis procedure. “Not only does he put one foot in front of the other when things are hard, he always does it with grace and a humble heart,” Jordan says. Still, after his surgery, Jordan says it was hard to watch as Edgar’s body wasn’t bouncing back to peak playing performance. While rehabbing his shoulder, he started working for a family member’s steel fabrication shop and giving

“Edgar has been great for [our son] Cooper, not only with his knowledge and teaching skills but how to handle the ups and downs of the game. He really connects with the kids and truly cares about their growth.” - Aaron and Pepper Bentley, parents of Cooper Bentley, Sophomore at Shelby County High School “Edgar has helped me a lot on the mental sides of baseball. He really helps me understand the game more and helped me go so far into detail about how to prepare for a game. Also, he has worked with me a lot to try to get as flexible as I can with my body. Edgar has helped me out a ton, and I’m super happy to be working with him so I become the best player I can be.” - Micah Morris, Freshman at Shelby County High School “Edgar communicates his craft well to teenagers. He has helped [my son] Nathan become an elite pitcher – up to 85 mph on the mound and ranked in the state by PG and PBR. To maintain and keep improving requires a lot of rehab post pitching, stretching and strength training. Edgar is very good with this aspect; he’s been there and done it. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Celia Dozier

Shelby County Schools High School Teacher of the Year PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Passion emanates from Celia Dozier when you speak to her, and it quickly becomes obvious why she was named 2020 High School Teacher of the Year by the Shelby County Board of Education. She taught biology and forensics at Helena High School for two years, and this school year you can find Celia teaching biomedical science at the school system’s Career Technical Educational Center —which she says “gives students an opportunity to gain valuable work skills I think all kids need and to earn credentials to go out into the work force and to do well in college and in a career.” We talked with her to learn more about her classroom and how she got there. How did you get into teaching? Teaching is my second career. I have a bachelor’s in health care administration and for 10 years worked in skilled nursing facilities as a business office manager. I enjoyed that but always shave had a passion to teach. I decided to venture into the master’s program at Samford. When I talked to the admissions counselor, it was a perfect fit. During my last semester at Samford, I got the position as long-term substitute at Helena, and it reaffirmed I had made the right decision. I got hired on at Helena after that. What made you teach science and what are you passionate about in the classroom? I attended John Carroll and grew up middle class, but I saw few African Americans represented in science. It was important for me to be a representative for other people of color in a STEM field. What I love most about the classroom is not just the content, but developing an excellent rapport with my students. Because I am so focused on building those relationships

MACARON MASTERY An Alabaster-based baker finds inspiration in French pastries for her own creations. BY SARAH COOK MCBRIDE PHOTOS BY MARY TWEEDY ShelbyLiving.com

Megan Clark may speak with a Southern accent, but her baking is all French. Since visiting Paris about three years ago, she has spent countless hours perfecting the art of the macaron, a sweet meringue-based confection that calls for egg white, almond meal and not one, but two forms of sugar. “They’re finicky cookies,” Megan says. “I kind of became obsessed with making the perfect one. I would even dream about it.” Even before visiting Paris, Megan had an interest in French baking. A dietician by day, she would often use the kitchen as a place to let her creativity unfold. Once she began to really hone the process of macaron making, the idea for developing a more formal side-hustle began to take shape. “It all happened really fast,” Megan says of the decision to officially open Le Chat Souriant Patisserie, which translates to “The Smiling Cat

Patisserie.” “It all came together after a few months. I got to the point where the macarons were where I wanted them to be, so I decided to open (the business).” All of the Patisserie’s macarons are made in Megan’s home kitchen in Alabaster, which she admits can be challenging at times, but the creative satisfaction it provides greatly outweighs the long nights and busy weekends. The trick to making the perfect macaron, Megan says, is all in the details. Using almond flour, egg whites, powdered sugar and regular sugar, Megan creates the meringue, a light and airy confection that serves as the base of the macaron. “There’s a lot of technique that goes into it,” she says. “You can turn the meringue too many times, the oven can be just too hot or too cool—everything has to be very specific.” Aside from the feat of creating the perfect

macaron, Megan has also spent many hours perfecting the variety of flavors that make the macarons both festive and colorful. She likes to stick to the seasons when it comes to flavors, offering curated boxes that celebrate specific times of the year and the holidays associated with them. “We just did a St. Patrick’s Day batch that had pistachio, salted caramel (for gold coins), Irish cream and key lime pie,” Megan says. All year long, however, you can find more traditional flavors like vanilla, chocolate, caramel, raspberry, blueberry and others. She likes to keep as many options available for her customers. Aside from macarons, you’ll also find a generous selection of other French-inspired items at Le Chat Souriant Patisserie. Madeleines, financiers (a small French almond cake), sable cookies, croissants, caneles (French pastry flavored with rum and vanilla) and brioche are just a few of the selections in her repertoire. Needless to say, Megan stays busy. “A typical day involves a lot of baking, dreaming up new flavors, curating new box theme ideas, corresponding with customers and photographing treats,” she says. Since Megan doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar home for Le Chat Souriant Patisserie yet, most business comes in through social media or word of mouth. After only being open for a short period of time, the response has already been great, she says. “I’ve learned that starting a business requires a lot of hard work, planning and overcoming obstacles, but it is totally ShelbyLiving.com

TIPS FOR TURNING YOUR SIDEHUSTLE INTO A FULL BUSINESS Tip #1: Make an offer. Offer discounts and giveaways to get your product out there. Being a new business, people may need some incentive to give you a try. I offered a discount for our first macaron box, the Luck Box, and I have plans for more giveaways and discounts on my Instagram.” Tip #2: Get the word out. Don’t be afraid to contact customers or to try out-of-the-box avenues for selling your product. I advertised my first box on the Birmingham subReddit asking if people would be interested in purchasing, and the response was overwhelming. It never hurts to ask just to gauge how many people would be interested. Tip #3: Get social. Think about putting your business on multiple social media platforms to reach as many potential customers as possible. We have a Facebook page, a Reditt account(u/lechatsouriantmac), an Instagram (@lechatsouriantpatisserie), a Twitter, a YouTube channel (Le Chat Souriant Patisserie) and a Tik Tok account (@lechatsouriantpatisserie).

worth it,” she says. “I love getting to share my pastries with the community, and it brings me so much happiness when I hear that people love what I have created.” Looking to the future, Megan says she still envisions her baking being inspired by the romance (and sweetness) of French culture— trying to capture a little bit of the magic she 36 May/June 2021

experienced while roaming Parisian streets years before. French baking, she says, will always be her passion. “My dream is to have a brick-and-mortar store where I can expand what pastries I have to offer,” she says. “Plus, it’ll be a place here customers can relax, enjoy delicious treats and add a little magical whimsy to their day.”

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Peter Genereux

Oak Mountain Brewing Company Managing Partner PHOTO BY KEITH MCCOY

After 15 years of living in Pelham and growing up in the Valleydale Road and Caldwell Mill area of Shelby County, Peter Genereux knows Pelham the area well. And now he’s brought it something it hasn’t had until this point—a brewing company that operates as brewpub (so it serves food!). Two other customer-friendly offerings we should mention: they offer table service, and their menu is on an app called Untappd you can view anywhere. We talked with Peter in March as they were serving up beer and wine and food and preparing to start brewing their own beer. Here’s what he shared. How did Oak Mountain Brewing come to be? I worked for Alabama Crown for 12 years and saw all the breweries opening up in downtown Birmingham and Pelham and Shelby County being underserved. I thought especially with Birmingham Bulls playing in Pelham, Live Nation bringing concerts to Oak Mountain Amphitheatre and Oak Mountain State Park expanding, people come to the area year-round. We found a building at the corner of 31 and 119, and we were supposed to open last year but with COVID we slowed down. In January we opened as a tap room selling other people’s beer and wine, and by the middle of April we hope to start brewing our own beer and by May we hope to be serving it. What’s on tap now? Right now we have 24 craft beers we are rotating out, and we supplement that with another 14 cans or bottles. We have

38 May/June 2021

Alabama locals like Ferris and Good People and Trim Tab and Straight to Ale and Common Bond, and regional breweries like High Wire and Sierra Nevada and Southern Probation—plus other mainstays and European beers. For wine we will do four whites and three reds by the glass and a few more bottle-only options.

Baldwin who was head brewer at Ghost Train is our head brewer, so that gives us some credibility. We want quality beer and consistent beer. Our pilsner is our Pelham Pilsner. We are working on our names for our other beers, but they might be named after things in Oak Mountain State Park.

What about the food selection? We have some appetizers like hummus, spinach artichoke dip, nachos and pretzels and will be doing some paninis, and we also run food trucks Thursday to Sunday like Hey Baby and Hot Dog Nation and others.

What does the building you are in have to offer? The building was originally Alabama Outdoors, and then it was a mattress store. One of the things I like about the space is the 20-foot ceiling heights, so we were able to get taller tanks and coolers. There was also a mezzanine that gives us another 1,000 square feet upstairs that people can rent out for birthday parties or other events. We extended our patio so it wraps around the side of the building and put in a garage door. We built a stage and are doing live music Friday and Saturday and trivia on Thursdays.

Tell us about the beer you’ll brew there soon. We will have four core beers—a pilsner, a blonde, an IPA and a kettle sour—on draft in our tap room and through our distributor, and we will have eight more beers of ours on tap rotating. Clay

HOME

JUST THEIR STYLE

Here’s how a couple brought their Meadow Brook home three decades up to date with neutrals and clean lines. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS BY LINDSEY DRENNAN ShelbyLiving.com

39

W

When Mallorie and Justin Petrusson first walked into their Meadow Brook home, it was filled with pink wallpaper, hunter green paint and other décor touches straight of the 1980s. The previous homeowner, who was in her 90s, had lived in the home since it was built, and little had been touched in the past three decades. But its bones were more than appealing to the Petrussons. The house was all one level and brick, with a three-car garage, and by then the couple had been looking at real estate for six months, starting around the time the COVID-19 pandemic did. What happened next was a whirlwind. They closed on the house in September, started renovations the next day and moved in by the first week of December. Perhaps all the more notably, they had it ready for a magazine photo shoot by early March. From the start, Mallorie could envision the “after” photos of their new home. They tore down walls off the living room to open it up to the entryway, dining room and kitchen. In the kitchen, they were able to change the layout slightly to a more open concept while working with the existing cabinets, adding a fresh paint color and new hardware. Their builder Patrick Ray’s wife, Jonica,

40 May/June 2021

sketched a design with marble crawling up the wall to form a backsplash and resting shelf. “I had saved photos of kitchens with marble that goes halfway up the wall,” Mallorie notes. “I hadn’t seen it in person, but I knew I wanted to do something different and interesting.” Besides opening it up, the most notable transformation came in the color scheme. The Petrussons had all the walls painted an off-white color (Alabaster by Benjamin Moore) and the doors painted Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore (the same color as the kitchen cabinets), and they replaced the doorknob hardware with brass and the floors with new oak hardwoods. Much of Mallorie’s design inspiration came from Pinterest, designers like Studio McGee and Instagram accounts like @chrislovesjulia, as she filled her new Alabaster canvas with neutrals and clean lines with a side of darker wood from antiques. Some of her furniture came from Birmingham Wholesale Furniture, where she worked before their now 2-year-old son was born, and others from home furnishing stores and antique stores along Highway 280. No matter the décor detail in Petrussons’ house, it’s now just their style.

Breakfast Nook Mallorie says she never was an “antique person” before moving into this home, but the previous owner left a small table that’s now in their breakfast room that ended up inspiring her to incorporate older pieces along with her long-held penchant for clean lines—including this breakfast table that had been Justin’s grandmother’s.

Kitchen To make the kitchen more open, Mallorie opted not to put cabinets on one wall and instead use marble as a backsplash that flows up into a Carrara marble shelf. The cabinets are painted a creamy color with a hint of grey (Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore). Mallorie couldn’t find a hardware finish she liked, so she painted the handles the patina brass she envisioned to match the light the lights above the island.

Dining Room One of Mallorie’s favorite parts of the home is its three bay windows. This one looks into a farmhouse-style dining table Mallorie found at booth at Greystone Marketplace and moved from their previous home.

Living Room Painted wood now lines the ceiling in place of the popcorn ceiling that was in place when the Petrussons moved in. Two facing sofas anchor the spacious room along with recliners from Birmingham Wholesale and a coffee table from Irondale Pickers. They also setup a tent for their 2 year old in the corner and added black and white prints from The Mercantile in Brook Highland to the wall adjacent to it.

Health Focus of the Month:

NAMI Shelby offers valuable mental health resources

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought uncertainty, fear, worry and stress. As a mental health therapist, I have noticed a significant increase amongst clients reporting isolation, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. While speaking to colleagues, it is not uncommon to hear of clients returning to therapy due to a return of previously diminished symptoms or a rush of new clients calling to address the need to handle symptoms either previously unnoticed or entirely new to them. Many of us are lost and uncertain about how to meet these needs. Fortunately, many programs and institutions have adapted their formats in order to continue to meet needs and address obstacles resulting from ongoing precautions; one of these organizations is NAMI Shelby. During the last year, our society has reduced social interactions to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Although this response has been necessary to “flatten the curve,” it has resulted in increased mental health symptoms due to lack of support, limited contact with

others outside our homes, and decreased opportunities to check-in with others. One of the ways that NAMI Shelby has stepped up to address this need is to initiate free virtual Support Group meetings via Zoom every other week. These Support Group meetings are attended by individuals either directly experiencing mental health issues or family members, partners or friends of individuals with mental illness. This provides an easily accessible place to talk about the challenges associated with mental health and to receive support from others who are experiencing similar obstacles or have addressed these obstacles in the past. Along with the increase of mental health symptoms comes a need for increased education, especially if you are experiencing these symptoms for the first time. The difficulty with this step is that it can

1301 COUNTY SERVICES DR. 72 May/June 2021

be difficult to identify what you are experiencing and finding the best way to describe it to others. However, therapists and doctors can help navigate this with you upon initiating the discussion. NAMI Shelby has begun to offer their Family-to-Family classes virtually in order to provide free education to people in our community that have loved ones living with mental illness. This class provides invaluable information which includes how to prepare and handle crises, current treatments and therapies, medications, basic biology of the brain, and various ways to cope with mental illnesses. In addition to this service, NAMI Shelby has transitioned to offering monthly educational meetings online. These meetings cover a variety of topics associated with their 2021 theme of “Tools to Build the Best You,” such as relationships, current legislature updates, and addressing non-suicidal

self-injury. As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and the ripple effects of it, make sure that you take the initiative to address your mental health needs and the mental health needs of those closest to you. Although, we all deal with things differently, we all need connection. Please consider reaching out to a local therapist or doctor if you believe you need immediate or intensive assistance with your mental health. If you need more support and education, please consider joining NAMI Shelby’s various programs, which you can find more information about at www.namishelby.com. MY SHELBY COUNTY DREW ANN LONG Caroline’s Cart Founder

Cupcakes Please

Bert’s Desserts Bert Carter, who is named after her grandmother, makes the best everything: cupcakes, pound cake (my favorite), chicken salad and more. This new Alabaster business gives back to the community, and Bert’s husband AC played football at Alabama.

For Fresh Produce

Burnette Farms Market I love fresh foods, and Burnette Farmers Market has an amazing variety, with arm fresh produce, yummy desserts, beautiful plants and more. Stop by for lunch or just shop their market for so many things. I highly recommend their poppyseed chicken casserole—delicious!

Family Outings

Caroline’s Cart Accessible Retailers Having a child with special needs, accessibility and inclusion are especially important to us, and we shop at retailers that offer Caroline’s Cart—Target, Lowes, Publix and Walmart—all in Alabaster. We created Caroline’s Cart so families like ours can include their older child or adult with disabilities in a family shopping outing.

Family Memories

Evangel Classical Christian School One of the reasons my husband and I moved to Alabaster was for our three children to attend Evangel Classical Christian School. We love ECCS and are proud that Shelby County offers a classical Christian education.

Paint Your Own

Party Art This “paint your own” place in Pelham has just about anything you can think of. Whether you War Eagle or Roll Tide, Party Art will not disappoint!
