Hello! My name is Anna Grace Moore, and I am the new Chief Magazine Editor for Shelby County Newspapers Inc. which includes Shelby Living, Mountain Brook Magazine, Vestavia Hills Magazine, Hoover’s Magazine and Homewood Life. It is my privilege to work in such an inspiring industry whose focus is engaging our community, building better relationships and highlighting pivotal figures who shape our way of life. Before coming to work at Shelby County Newspapers Inc., I attended Samford University where I graduated in May of 2021 with a degree in journalism and mass communications with a concentration in public relations. After graduating I welcomed my now nine-month-old, Jacob, in July of 2021 with my fiancé, Justin Breedlove. We live in Hoover where I was raised, and we plan to reside here as we get married and grow our family in the future. Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to write. I would always write short stories, poems, prose and even essays for fun on my summer reading books. Writing has always been a passion of mine. When I was 8 years old in the third grade, I won second place in a poetry contest honoring Hoover City Firefighters. I recited my poem in front of 200 city officials at a brunch, and my picture was published in the paper the next week! Not even the first-place winner’s picture made the papers. I was told I was featured because of how dramatically I read about water hoses and house fires. Fast forward more than a decade, and you’ll find me at my corner desk, scribbling down the latest scoops in my brown leather notebook or typing away on my MacBook into the wee hours of the morning. Not much has changed. My passion for the written word has fueled my desire to serve my community because of how people in my community have poured into me. It was not until I became a mother that I realized just how many people it took investing in my future to help me achieve the position I have today. It is such an honor to serve all of you. So, while you can’t always count on Alabama weather, I assure you that you can count on the magazine you’re reading to be entertaining and eye opening. Happy reading, folks! Best,

NOSTALGIC SCENTS
How an Alabaster native turned her love for her grassroots into sweet-smelling scents that remind people of home. BY ANNE RILEY PHOTOS BY MARY TWEEDY ShelbyLiving.com

A
Alabaster native Casie Jarman believes there’s nothing quite like a good candle. In fact, she’s lost count of the number of times she’s gone into a store specifically to buy a new candle, only later to discover that the smell was too strong or not strong enough, or the candle burned too quickly. Eventually, Casie decided that if she couldn’t find the perfect candle, she would just have to make her own—and that’s what prompted her to start her own candle company, Siluria Mills Co. If the name sounds familiar, that’s probably because locals have grown up with it. The Siluria Cotton Mill has been an Alabaster icon for as long as Casie can remember, and she was inspired to adopt the name after the city made recent improvements to the old mill water tower. “When I thought about the water tower, I thought, ‘that’s it!’” Casie says. “If the water tower can become an icon that symbolizes hope, prosperity and community, then I’ve got the perfect name for my company.” The goal of Siluria Mills Co. is simple yet profound: Casie wants to remind people of home. She wants them to remember their time at Thompson High School, the Dixie Youth Fields, prom, homecoming, all those trips to the promenade and Sonic on the weekends, day trips to the slab and the creek and all the other things that make Alabaster such a special place. “Once people smell my candles, they’re instantly reminded of summers at their friend’s lake house, Friday night football games, picking honeysuckle as a kid, or whatever memories it may bring back,” Casie says. “Very few things beat making someone else happy, especially in the world we’re living in now. That’s why my slogan is ‘smells like home.’ I try to blend fragrances that remind people of home; whatever and wherever that may be to them.” It’s not just the smell that reminds people of home; it’s the names of the candles, too. All of Casie’s spring and summer candles, which make up her “Hometown” line, are named after something or someone in Shelby County. While she’s gotten some pushback about limiting her market to such a local area, most people appreciate the fact that she loves her hometown enough to keep it as the focus.

“Not only are the fragrances phenomenal, if I do say so myself, but the names alone are a conversation starter,” Casie says. “I can’t count the number of times I’ve had customers come up to my booth and say, ‘Thompson? I graduated from there!’ Or, ‘Lay Lake? I grew up going there!’” In addition to her Hometown line and seasonal fragrances, Casie makes personalized candles— custom labeling, custom fragrances, candles in remembrance of a loved one, bridesmaid or wedding gifts, and more. To date, her favorite request was to make a candle that smelled like “him.” The “him” in question was a childhood friend of Casie’s who passed away several years ago. When his sister smelled the candle, she smiled and burst into tears. “Of course, I did too,” Casie says of the sweet memory. The utmost care goes into every candle Casie makes. Each product is hand-poured in her home studio and goes through intense testing to ensure it’s the very best it can be—including feedback received from her 5-year-old daughter, who Casie says frequently puts her in her place as far as candle fragrances go. As she began this venture, Casie was shocked at how complicated candle making could be. “It’s not just mixing some wax and fragrances together and pouring it into a jar,” Casie says. “Every single fragrance oil requires a different percentage to get the perfect melt pool and 14 May/June 2022
fragrance throw because they vary in weight. Then you add in all the different types of wax, wicks, vessels, embeds and colorants—you have a whole science experiment, which may be the most fun part for me, being a biologist by education.” Her selection of products has already moved beyond the candle realm, adding room sprays, scoopable wax melts and goat milk soaps to the list of offerings. On the company website (Siluriamills. com), customers can select from seasonal fragrances
like autumn’s Basic Witch, PSL Season!, and Sweater Weather; her spring line includes scents of Lay Lake, Mainstreet and Buck Creek. There’s also a year-round collection for scents that transcend seasonal restrictions. Vessel sizes range from a wax pot shot to a dough bowl, so customers can smell their way down memory lane for as long as they want. Now approaching one year in business, Casie is extremely proud of how far her company has come.

She’s already partnering with two local brick-and-mortar shops: Alabaster’s Brooklere Pharmacy and Plant Calera. In the next year, she hopes to gain at least two more partnerships, and her schedule is already blissfully booked with vendor shows and events. “My ultimate goal is to eventually have a brick-and-mortar store and candle bar where people can come and experience candle making with their friends,” Casie says of her
future plans. Until then, she’ll continue to sell her candles at in-person events and through her local partners, as well as virtually at Siluriamills.com. She’s also available to discuss wholesale candle supply with businesses and individuals. Zack Sucher remembers running home after school when he was 5 years old, not to watch cartoons or grab a snack, but to play and learn golf with his father, Randy. “I would play about nine holes with him, and for every par I made, he would give me a baseball card,” Sucher said. “I would just keep playing and keep getting better.” Keep playing and keep getting better. From that point on, this became Sucher’s philosophy, perhaps even mantra, about the profession that
seemed to start chasing him as soon as he started chasing random golf balls as a kid. Now 35, Sucher has been playing professionally for 13 years, most recently competing in the Korn Ferry Tour. Sucher said golf was always his joie de vivre. If he wasn’t playing with his dad, he was playing with his friends in middle school at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Mobile, where he grew up. “We had an unbelievable group of guys at St. Paul’s,” Sucher said. “When we were in 5th grade, ShelbyLiving.com

if we weren’t in school, we were playing. Our parents would drop us off at 8 a.m., we would play 18 holes, have lunch and then go play 18 more holes. Our parents would come pick us up at 8 p.m. So we would play for like 12 hours until dark.” Sucher said simply having good friends to play and practice with were his best memories. “Several went on to play in college like I did,” Sucher said. “We still keep in touch and talk about those days.” By his sophomore year at St. Paul’s, he was playing Division 1 college golf, helping his team earn four consecutive Alabama Class 5A State Titles from 2001 to 2004 and eventually earning a full scholarship to UAB. He majored in communication management, but golf remained his true passion. He won seven events at the college level while at University of AlabamaBirmingham and was named All-American in 2008 and 2009. He was also named to the U.S. team for the U.S.-Japan International Cup. “It was at this point that I realized, this is something I’m good at. I think I can do this professionally,” Sucher said. After going pro in 2009, he played on the NGA Hooters Tour from 2010 to 2012. He played on the Web.com Tour in 2011 and 2013 to 2014 and won his first title in July 2014 at the Midwest

Classic. Sucher, who just finished playing a tournament in Gulf Shores, will turn around in a couple of days and head to Miami for a one-day tour before taking a two-week break to spend time at his home in Mt Laurel. He spends 24 to 28 weeks out of the year traveling, but his family—his wife Courtney and two daughters, Hadley, 9, and Claire, 5—usually travels with him. “One of my favorite things about the PGA is it is very family-oriented,” Sucher said. “It has what we call a tour school, where kids can stay and six to eight teachers rotate and make sure they keep up with their schoolwork.” Sucher said being able to take his family with him has helped them share the love of the game together and even learn a little, or maybe even a lot. “My wife plays for fun. At first she didn’t know much. Now she knows it all. When the kids leave the house, I’m sure she’ll enjoy it a lot more.” It’s even possible that at least one of his two daughters could follow in his footsteps, but now is too soon to tell. “I’m trying to get them started. They’re great for two holes and then they’re done. Right now 24 May/June 2022
my younger daughter shows more interest than my oldest. I think from the age of about 10 to 13 is when they will really decide.” As for his vision for the future, Sucher said he wants to focus on that constant and never-ending improvement that was encouraged by his father at such a tender age. At every level, from age 5 to 35, he has worked on getting better, while always remembering the fun he had playing with his friends and the sheer love of the game. “With golf, it’s hard to plan for the future,” Sucher said. “I had a bad year last year. Four times I gained status and three times I lost it. Golf is like a roller coaster, with lots of highs and lows. Every year, everything changes.” Sucher said the most important lesson he’s learned in his career is something he hopes to convey to his children—and it’s a powerful message for golfers and non-golfers alike. “Golf is one of the few sports where the best in the world lose way more than they win,” Sucher said. “You have to go with the flow. You can’t get caught up in the little things. You have to focus less on the outcome and more on what you’re doing now.” He keeps playing, and he keeps getting better.

SIDEBAR TRIVIA In addition to being a talented golfer, Sucher also made the All-State basketball selection while a student at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Mobile. After college, Sucher performed in a Backstreet Boys cover band. Sucher was the sixth-grade checker champion in middle school. He has wrestled an alligator, and skydiving is on his bucket list. Favorite Golfer: Ernie Els, known as “The Big Easy.” “I grew up watching
him on TV. I haven’t played with him, but I’ve met him a couple of times while on tour.” Favorite golf range: Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, CA

MEET THE BOSS HOG The Beer Hog brings drinks, food and people together. BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE PHOTOS BY CHRISTINA AND DANIEL DENNIS, UNTOLD IMAGERY ShelbyLiving.com

From handcrafted, color-coated menu boards to glasses designed to highlight each type of drink, The Beer Hog in Pelham makes beer the main star. It’s that focus on the frothy beverage that truly sets this spot apart, says owner Chris Lawrence. Managing a business is nothing new for Chris. He also owns Deermans BBQ in Adamsville and planned to open another BBQ restaurant in the Alabaster-Pelham area. When that idea fell through, Chris decided to focus on another one of his passions: craft beer. He became interested in craft beer in his late 20s around 2008 when it became legal. “Beer was fun,” says Chris, an Alabaster resident. “I got to see different varieties and started doing some homebrewing.” Chris says he knew others loved craft beer like he did, and with no other breweries nearby at the time, he opened The Beer Hog in Pelham near the bowling alley in 2016. They offered a wide variety of beer and also brought in food trucks. “Most people hadn’t really seen anything like it,” he says. “We’re a bar with a package store.” Last spring, The Beer Hog expanded its menu and moved to a larger location at Pelham’s Campus No. 124, which is the former Valley Elementary School. Along with their large selection of craft beers, they now have a kitchen to go with them. The fully stocked bar has 64 craft beers on the wall (no domestics), six wines on tap, bourbon and whiskey. They also have about 300 bottled craft beers residents can take home to enjoy. Beers from local breweries like TrimTab Brewing, Ghost Train Brewing and Cahaba Brewing Company are especially popular with regulars. Thanks to their new kitchen, guests can now pair these flavorful beverages with savory dishes. Their food menu includes a variety of tasty meals and snacks, starting with appetizers like garlic knots, spinach dip, soft pretzels and smoked salmon dip.

Their thin-crust pizzas are cooked to order and come in 12-inch and 16-inch sizes. They have cheese, pepperoni, the loaded hog, the no hog, BBQ chicken, buffalo chicken and crowd-favorite the whole hog, which comes with a blend of mozzarella, provolone, pepperoni, sausage, bacon and ham. Even though they are able to offer a food menu now, guests won’t be confused about the focus of The Beer Hog. “It feels more like a brewery than a restaurant,” Chris says. “It’s really rustic with a lot of burned oak wood, charred oaks and a live-edge cedar bar. It’s got a warehouse, steam-punk look.” Chris and area manager Eric Messer built everything by hand, from the menu boards and flights to the blowtorched backsplash. They took old whiskey barrels and refurbished them into tables, which is especially fitting now that whiskey is on the menu. There’s a second room with a pool table, pinball machine and darts that’s open to the public and can also be rented out for events and parties. The Beer Hog is the perfect spot for friends and families to come together for good drinks, food and atmosphere.

When they were getting started, it took a little creativity to figure out how to create a menu board because they’re constantly making changes and adding new beers. They decided to create a color-coated menu: IPAs are in green, stouts in white and so on. Customers can easily look at the type of beer they want to make their selection. Their beers on tap rotate and can include mead, cider, stout, brown ale, sour, IPA, red ale, porter, strong ale, farmhouse ale, wheat beer, cream ale, hard seltzer and blonde ale. While other places might serve all of their beer in a pint glass, The Beer Hog treats each craft beer differently. “We’re beer nerds,” Chris says. “You’re supposed to use a certain glass for each beer. We also keep all of the original craft handles.” The glasses also don’t have logos, allowing guests to appreciate the colors and flavors of the beer. They also have beer and whiskey flights, along with growlers for to-go beer. “You can experience craft beer in a way you never have before,” he says. Chris, who describes himself as an IPA guy, says his favorite thing there is his staff, from the

bartenders to the managers. “They’re all amazing,” he says. “Regulars come in here and they feel like family. That’s the best part about The Beer Hog by far.” While they are constantly looking for ways to improve—including possibly expanding to a second location—The Beer Hog will keep the same feel customers have grown to love. From the 50-inch televisions and free WiFi to an outdoor patio and nice couches, there are plenty of ways to relax and enjoy a fun time out. They have karaoke on Mondays, trivia on Wednesdays and live music Thursday through Saturday nights. They hold events throughout the year like ones on Fat Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, a chili cookoff and a crawfish boil—along with hosting food trucks. Check out their Facebook page for upcoming events. The Beer Hog is open Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 10 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 2 to 11 p.m., Friday noon to midnight, Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight and Sunday noon to 11 p.m. It’s located in Campus No. 124 at 2408 Pelham Parkway in Pelham. TRANQUIL RETREAT Traditional meets modern in Nakia and Tyrell Buckner’s Helena home. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY LAUREN USTAD ShelbyLiving.com

When Nakia and Tyrell Buckner sit on their back patio and gaze at the lake behind their Shelby County home, they know they are exactly where they should be. After their youngest child graduated from ClayChalkville High School several years ago, Nakia and Tyrell were looking for a change of scenery—and a new place to plant their roots as empty-nesters. They were initially interested in Hoover, but when they started looking in the nearby Helena area, they felt like they had uncovered a hidden gem. “It’s really quiet, and it’s beautiful over there,” Tyrell says. “That’s the direction we went in.” Nakia, a real estate agent, was in her element looking at different houses and weighing their pros and cons. Like Tyrell, she was attracted to the quiet, scenic qualities Helena had to offer. And the thought of living close to two cities without being in the busiest parts of them appealed to her, too. It was just a matter of finding their ideal home, and that wasn’t difficult. A house in the Silver Lakes neighborhood checked many of the couple’s boxes. “We walked up, and I said, ‘This is the one,’” Nakia says. “We just thought it was the perfect space since we are empty-nesters now. We really liked the layout.” They moved into the house in 2018 and kept their furnishings and décor simple. “I don’t decorate a lot,” Nakia says. “It was very minimal and didn’t have a lot of décor. We had dreams of one day laying it out just how we want it.” They got their chance when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. Nakia was working from home, and the idea of redesigning their main living spaces—the rooms she was spending even more time in every day— seemed like a good way to reset during a stressful time. Nakia’s friend suggested she reach out to Andrea Meade, who was starting a design firm, Ellie Cate Home, with another woman named Angela Jones. “My friend knows I’m not a decorator,” Nakia says. “I don’t have the eye for it at all. She said, ‘Maybe you should let her (Andrea) do it.’”
Nakia and Tyrell reached out to Andrea and Angela in the summer of 2020 for help. Nakia wanted an overall warm and traditional feel, with occasional pops of color and modern touches. “I’m very conservative, and I like traditional,” she says. Andrea and Angela started with gray – Nakia’s favorite color – and looked at ways to add blue, mauve, purple and gold accents throughout the spaces. They kept the house’s original paint color – a dark gray with green undertones – in the entryway, living and dining room spaces. From there, Andrea and Angela went to work on bringing their overall vision for the spaces to life. “They’re great to work with through every step of the process,” Nakia says. “They’ll give you ideas as well.” Nakia and Tyrell were so pleased with how the first two rooms turned out that they decided to revamp the downstairs patio area—also considered a part of Tyrell’s man cave. “I wanted an area where I could have a pool table, bar and patio with furniture and a grill,” he says. “Once I started seeing the way everything was transforming upstairs, I wanted them to do the same thing for me down here.” As University of Alabama alumni, Nakia and Tyrell watch their fair share of football games, often with family and friends. Tyrell played for the Crimson Tide from 1993-1997, and he and Nakia met each other when they were students at UA. “That’s why Alabama is still really big for both of us,” she says. “I always make the joke that I went to Alabama, found an Alabama football player husband and got a degree.” They wanted an outdoor space where they could relax, watch the games on TV and socialize with their guests. “We entertain a lot, and we both have big families,” he says. “I’m ready to have football parties. I’m excited about that.” Tyrell describes the redesign of the three spaces as “a complete 180,” a transformation he and Nakia are thrilled to have finished for the summer and fall seasons. “We’re ready to enjoy life and enjoy our home and enjoy each other,” Nakia says. “We just can’t wait.” ShelbyLiving.com

Dining Room The couple knew they were keeping Tyrell’s grandmother’s wood table and chairs in their dining room, so Andrea and Angela designed the rest of the space around it, adding modern elements that paired well with the traditional style of the table. Custom drapery draws attention to the 15-foot ceilings, and they added accent chairs to the original chairs and chose an ornate chandelier for an elegant touch. “All of it just worked,” Nakia says. “It’s very light and very warm. I think the dining room is my favorite room.”

Living Room The couple kept the large sofa and oversized chair they already had and added new pieces, including two more chairs, curtains, a coffee table and a rug. To brighten the space, Andrea and Angela painted the mantel and replaced the dark curtains with lighter ones. They painted the bookshelves next to the fireplace and filled them with family photos. Matching credenzas provide much-needed storage space, especially for games the Buckners play during their family game nights. “I love everything about it,” Nakia says of the space. “It looks like a totally different room.”

Patio Tyrell wanted the patio to reflect a sense of masculinity with the modern comforts of a versatile outdoor living space. Andrea and Angela used a primarily black and white color palette with splashes of gray and gold in elements like pillows and décor. Along with ample seating, the space boasts a wall-mount electric fireplace and a big-screen TV. “Everything was perfect,” he says. “Everything was very sleek and stylish. I was amazed and blown away with everything they did.”

Lovely LOUISVILLE By Christiana Roussel | Photos Contributed
When you first think about the city of Louisville, baseball, bourbon and horses might be the first thoughts that come to mind. To be sure, this city is wellknown for all three things but venture a bit farther and you will discover so much more. ShelbyLiving.com

HIT THE ROAD
WHAT TO DO Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory Sluggermuseum.com Whether or not you’re a fan of the baseball diamond, you need to visit this downtown landmark. After capturing an Instagram-worthy photo with the giant bat out front, head inside for a tour of the factory where this legendary company has been churning out Louisville Slugger bats for peewees to pros since 1884. Book your tour time in advance and plan to fall in love with the art of woodworking.
WHEN TO GO Honestly, any time of year is a great time to head north on I-65 where this city, founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark as a way to honor King Louis XVI, lies just five hours away. Families love all there is to do outside – baseball games, historical exploration, biking along the Ohio River – while couples or maybe a passel of guys might want to dive headlong into the bourbon scene. With the Zombie Walk in August, Porktoberfest in October, Derby Day in May, summer concert series and art shows year round, there is great food and culture here for days so, pack a bag and hit the road.

Bernheim Forest Bernheim.org Before you even get into the city of Louisville, plan to stop at Bernheim Forest, just 20 minutes south of town. Situated on 16,000 acres in Bullitt County, this arboretum and research forest feels like you’ve stepped sideways into another world, one with a slower pace, that is lush and begging to be explored. Not to be missed: Forest Giants in the Giant Forest. Frazier History Museum Fraziermuseum.org Located just across the street from the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory is the Frazier History Museum, an airy renovated factory space with a well-curated and well-edited collection of historically significant artifacts and art, aimed at introducing visitors to all things Kentucky. It also marks the official start of the Urban Bourbon Trail.
Churchill Downs Churchilldowns.com At the top of most visitors’ lists is a trip to horse-racing mecca, Churchill Downs. Sure, tout le monde wishes to be here in early May, donning a fancy hat and sipping a signature Mint Julep, but there is great history and culture here year ‘round, that merits exploration. Tours include a stunning video in the round, as well as glimpses into the paddocks and the vaunted Winner’s Circle. But don’t even think about stepping foot onto the famed track, unless you want to go to jail. Seriously. Stitzel-Weller Distillery Stitzelwellerdistillery.com If you have to pick just one distillery to tour in your time in Louisville, let it be Stitzel-Weller. Period. The grounds are gorgeous, the tour is inspirational and informative, and this is where bourbon’s past meets its future. Be sure to save time to pop in to the Garden & Gun Club upstairs, where the skilled bartenders will help you while away the afternoon in a beautiful amber-hue.
Neighborhood Tours Like most Southern cities, Louisville is divided into neighborhoods (more than 200!), each with a culture and a vibe all their own. Cave Hill Cemetery Cavehillcemetery.com Outside of New Orleans, when was the last time a cemetery visit was on your itinerary? Possible never but this one is very much worth seeing. Lush rolling hills, dotted with marble landmarks, Cave Hill is as serene as you might imagine, and an integral part of Louisville history. What makes it notable are two famous residents: Colonel Harland Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, and Muhammad Ali. Olmsted Parks Olmstedparks.org Famous for his vision in creating New York City’s Central Park and Asheville’s Biltmore Estate landscape, Frederick Law Olmsted was commissioned to design an entire park system for the city of Louisville in 1891. There are more than a dozen parks here that carry the Olmsted vision of providing engaging community spaces for all to enjoy. We’ll leave it to you to determine which one has the better space for picnics or frisbee golf.

HIT THE ROAD NULU The East Market District of downtown is affectionately referred to as New Louisville or NULU for short. Fantastic food, eclectic shopping and gallery-hopping are the big draws here. A specific highlight would be the leather-goods purveyor Clayton & Crume flagship store, in Muhammad Ali’s former gym. Butchertown One of Louisville’s oldest neighborhoods and a former meatpacking district, Butchertown is home to Bourbon Barrel Foods where owner Matt Jamie retails culinary wares including his epic Kentucky soy sauce aged in reclaimed bourbon barrels. Definitely do not miss. Locust Grove Locustgrove.org This site is the former home of William Clark’s sister, Lucy and her husband William Croghan. The famed explorers Lewis and Clark stopped here on their return to Washington City in 1806.
WHERE TO EAT Prepare to be wowed by the food here. Yes, we are spoiled in Birmingham, with our James Beard Award winning chefs a plenty, but Louisville has its fair share of culinary hot spots, to be sure.
Bourbon Barrel Foods Marketplace Eatyourbourbonmarketplace.com Every Friday night, Chef-in-Residence Michael Hargrove of River City Supper Club, crafts a unique menu while bartender Lauren Dupre creates cocktails or beer pairings for each dish.
Taco Luchador el-taco-luchador.com A little kitchy but a lot of yummy at this casual eatery with four area locations. Redhog Artisan Market redhogartisanmeat.com Lunch, dinner, custom charcuterie boards – rooted in the simplest of ingredients but elevated with deft chef hands. La Bodeguita de Mima Cuban Restaurant & Bar Labodeguitademima.com Come hungry and adventurous, and if you arrive in bad mood, you’re guaranteed to leave happier. It is just impossible not to, such is the vibe.
70 May/June 2022
Logan Street Market loganstmarket.com Literally something for everyone here in this bright and airy space that is onepart food hall, one-part community hub, one-part maker space. A total locals-only kind of spot where you feel cool just being there.
River House Restaurant Riverhouselouisville.com Just outside of town, on the banks of the Ohio River. Only the food rivals the view. Pizza Lupo Pizzalupo.com A favorite with locals, with the awards to prove it, their wood-fired pizza is fantastic.
Justin’s House of Bourbon thehouseofbourbon.com More than a mere liquor store, Justin’s House of Bourbon is an EXPERIENCE. This tasting shop that doubles as retailer of vintage and rare bourbons and whiskeys even boasts a Whiskey Historian. After graduating college in 2014, Caroline Paulus moved to Kentucky to pursue a career in archeology. While her days were spent with prehistoric artifacts her nights and weekends involved a complete and total exploration into the beverage of choice in her new hometown. Now, as senior editor of The Bourbon Review, Caroline also shares her knowledge with customers at Justin’s House of Bourbon, ensuring everyone leaves feeling more confident in their preferences and with a bottle or two of something they’ll love.

Thompson High School Thompson High School Friday Nights are a favorite of mine. I get to watch two of my children perform: Sarah Paige, who’s my youngest who’s also on the dance team, and Carson, who’s my middle child who played in the band.
Faith and Fellowship
Vineyard Family Services The Vineyard Family Services Center ribbon cutting was such a proud moment for my family and me. I’ve been working as the Executive Director for Vineyard Family Services, and the establishment of this community center was monumental in expanding our outreach within the community.
