A client told me that when celebrating, always invest in good food, and beautiful flowers, the rest will come together… and I couldn’t agree more. In the south we love a “get together” whether it’s watching the game or celebrating a special occasion, the fundamentals remain the same - Good company, delicious food, and beautiful decor. Our style is modern, steeped in southern tradition. Our arrangements pair well with touchdowns to weddings, and anything in between… including sweet baby showers #lifestyleflorist

Alabama Representative Arnold Mooney presented another check on August 11 to Jefferson State President Keith Brown (R) to support initiatives at the Shelby-Hoover Campus. Jefferson State is very appreciative of Rep. Mooney’s steadfast support through the years. Representative Mooney has served as a Republican in the 43rd district of the Alabama House of Representatives since 2014 and has been a strong supporter of Jefferson State.

Traveler’s Aesthetic
TTo mark an end of an era is to often say goodbye and part ways with tradition and loved ones. Holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas should be joyous occasions, right? Everyone sings Christmas carols and decorates their trees in fluorescent splendor. For some, however, holidays can be a drag to trudge through. I am one of those who dred yuletide cheer. Now, don’t get me wrong, readers. I enjoy turkey on Thanksgiving Day and watching the Thanksgiving Day parade that only until this year did my uncle inform me was not actually called, “The Macy’s Day Parade.” I look forward to Samford, my alma mater’s “Lighting of the Way,” in which the university celebrates the season’s festivities with live music and the lighting of an enormous tree. Though, festivities, I’d argue, are just the perks that holidays often bring. It is the people we share those holidays with that make such moments worthwhile.
For those that have lost, holidays often leave a void unfulfilled in their hearts. My father passed away from a brainstem stroke on October 10, 2020, completely out of the blue. My mother, my sister and I spent what felt like an eternity in the ICU, waiting for him to wake up. He never did. Finally, after grieving a life cut short, my mother decided to send my father home to Heaven in time for the holidays. Being one of the most remarkable RN’s that Birmingham has to offer, she actually was the one to “pull the plug,” literally. She didn’t want anyone else to send him home because she took “till death do us part” quite seriously, and she wanted to ensure his care.
My mother is the strongest woman I know. I remember that first Christmas without my father, we three sat around the Christmas tree just staring into the pine abyss, wondering how so much decor could yet feel still so empty. My message to you, readers, (for those that share my faith) is that as the dreaded “joyful occasions embark,” remember that our loved ones are probably celebrating one of the best festivities holidays have to offer in Heaven. Heaven is a place without pain or sorrow. Oh, to hear the angels sing on Christmas morning, rejoicing our Savior’s birth! Won’t that be a sight to see?
I cannot promise holidays will get any easier for anyone with a void, but I can successfully say that new traditions will be made. When one era ends, another begins. So, I wish you all comfort during your grief, joy at the end of your sorrows and above all, to remember to cling fast to those you call dear.
With all the love in my heart, I wish you each a wonderful Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a loving celebratory season for whatever you and your family may celebrate. May the Lord bless and keep you all.
Love and cheer,

How Daniel Meadows Sharpened His Skills and Made a Splash in the Knife Business.
BY CAROLINE NEWMAN PHOTOS BY JAMES AND RACHEL CULVERDDaniel Meadows never wanted his knives to look generic. He wanted them to be distinctive, designed with memorable flair and with extraordinary function. He custom-designs each one and tests it ruthlessly, not content until the knife can slice a paper towel cleanly in one stroke or dice a grape without any slipping or sliding.
“That is when I know it’s ready to go,” says Daniel, who runs Meadows Knives out of his garage workshop in Shelby County. “There are so many different things to think about – the weight, the balance, how the knife is centered when I hold it. I obsess about all of those things.”
That attention to detail has brought Meadows Knives to the attention of chefs in Alabama and beyond. Daniel, who started the business in 2018, has a roster of local chefs among his clients, including chef husband-and-wife duo Tyler and Jennifer Lyne. Tyler is an Iron Chef winner and has worked with 1856 in Auburn and the soon-tocome Frenchie’s Café in Birmingham. Jennifer is a classically trained pastry chef and, together with Tyler, hosts intimate Tasting TBL dinners in the couple’s home.
Also among Daniel’s clients are Jeffrey Compton, who is the executive chef of The Battery
in Homewood and recent winner of the Alabama Seafood Cook-Off; and several chefs at Acre, a farm-to-table restaurant now renowned as a culinary destination in Auburn.
Daniel himself is an Auburn graduate, earning a degree in industrial design. Even as he went on to a career in marketing, he kept that interest in design alive and turned his attention to the culinary world, which had always intrigued him.
“I have always had a passion for the cooking industry and had a lot of friends who are chefs,” he says. “I did not necessarily want to be a chef, but I knew I could put my skills to use, building something that my friends could use.”
Daniel started making knives for fun and taught himself various techniques, studying videos on YouTube. He gave a few knives to his chef friends to test out and, about a year later, put his first knife up for sale. Now, he has more than

BUYING A BLADE
Meadows Knives can do custom orders for chefs or other clients interested in high-quality culinary knives. Pricing is not fixed. It is based on each client’s custom order.

3,000 followers on Instagram, where chefs and amateurs alike are drawn to his knives’ unique designs. He makes mostly chef knives, along with some long, narrow sushi knives and a few smaller oyster knives that clients have asked for.
Among the knives’ features are the resin handles, which Daniel hand-dyes and carves. His knives also have a distinctive black edge that comes from the San Mai technique that he uses to forge the blade, a Japanese technique that combines three layers of steel: two stainless steel pieces and one carbon steel piece. The carbon steel is sandwiched and hammered between the stainless steel. Daniel then etches the carbon steel, creating the curled black edges seen along his knives.
“I didn’t want to create something cookie cutter,” he says, noting that anyone expecting a plain, black-handled knife should look elsewhere. “I want each knife to have a personal feel and a bright, colorful design. I talk to people about what colors they like, what type of steel they want. I love talking through those things, and I have made a lot of good friends through those conversations.”
Each custom knife can take upwards of 32 hours to make.
Daniel makes the blade first, hammering out and shaping large bolts of steel. The steel must be hardened in a 1,400-degree oven and then dipped in a vat of cool oil to set before baking for four hours to get to the right level of strength. Then, he dyes and carves the resin handle, often going through several iterations to get to the handle he feels best fits each knife.
Daniel does all of this in the garage workshop attached to the home he shares with his wife, Ashley. It is a threecar garage that, he jokes, never has a car in it. Instead, it is filled with the specialty ovens, anvils and other equipment he needs.
He spends most nights and weekends in that garage after wrapping up his day job, working remotely as a creative director for a North Carolina-based marketing firm.
“Meadows Knives takes up pretty much every ounce of my free time,” Daniel says. “We really started growing our sales over the past year. I still make one knife at a time, to get the detail right, so it can get time-consuming.”
It’s a lot of work, and it’s “even harder than it looks,” but he still loves it.
“I have a really strong passion for this industry, and I have met so many awesome people,” he says. “I have really enjoyed it, and I am excited to keep growing.”

RAISING LEADERS
Shelby County Schools invests in raising up young leaders in annual conference.
BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE PHOTOS BY PATRICK MCGOUGH, COLE PEVEY & BRYAN POPEBBringing up the next generation of leaders in Shelby County started with an idea from a handful of high schoolers.
A group of about five SGA students from Oak Mountain High School attended a leadership conference at Auburn University in 2013, recalls John Milton—who accompanied the students on the trip and now leads the Oak Mountain media program.
On their way back from the event, the students talked about what they liked from the conference and how they could have an impact in their school. But since the event was held in the spring, that didn’t leave them much time to implement their ideas during that school year.
They began looking for a local leadership event that was earlier in the year and would allow more students to attend. But, they couldn’t find one. So, the group decided to create its own event, leading to the first Shelby County Schools student leadership conference in fall 2013.
“Our goals when we started were getting the most students involved as we could and making it accessible and not cost prohibiting,” John says.
While the conference is now funded by the county, it didn’t start out that way. In the beginning, the funding for the conference came from students asking local businesses for support. They spent $100 on cards to hand out to companies to ask for money, and they ended up raising more than
$15,000.
“This was something that the students said they wanted for more students to experience—that’s the heart of it,” John says. “I’ve helped manage it logistically, but the drive and inspiration has always been from that original group of students, who experienced something that made a difference for them.”
They partnered with Kevin Scott, founder of the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy program, to speak the first year—and he
came back again for this past conference, as well.
“We expose students to those at the highest level, so they can see themselves as leaders,” John says. “The biggest win is when someone who is interested but not a top leader finds ways they can have an impact in their school or community.”
This year’s conference was held in person for the first time since COVID on Sept. 15 at Valleydale Church. Led by the students in the Oak Mountain media
STUDENT IMPACT
Toward the end of the conference each year, students brainstorm and share takeaways from the event that they can incorporate in their schools and communities. Past project ideas include a mentoring program for elementary classes and service projects focused on school improvements.
One school started a culture day to help students get to know and connect with new teachers at their school. Oak Mountain High School created a color run, which has raised more than $100,000 for UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2013.
“Most of these groups already have things in mind,” John says. “The conference helps them have new tools to maximize the service project they’re planning to make that more successful.”
While each initiative is important, what those involved with the conference are most interested in is equipping students with the tools they need to make those happen.
“It’s not about what project are you going to do,” John says.
“The focus is on growing as a leader and then the things you do have more of an impact.”
program, the event welcomed about 400 students and teachers from every high school in Shelby County.
“It’s a great day to engage and equip students in leadership, so they can take that back to their schools,” John says.
Each school decides how the students are selected to attend— whether it’s through applications, nominations or chosen from different groups. That allows them to take ownership of the process, he adds.
“I haven’t seen a leadership program yet other than this one that lets you bring 40 kids,” John says. “This gives kids the opportunity to experience a world-class conference. We want leadership to be accessible to kids.”
Not only does the event allow more students to be involved, but it also brings them together with other teens they might not interact with otherwise.
“Our county has seven different high schools, and this is the only time during the year we have representatives from all of the high schools together at one time,” John says. “Sharing
When the reason you’re doing something is right and the motives are pure, it will always continue in some form.
-John Milton
those ideas is so helpful.”
Students are welcomed to the conference with music, dancing, games and other activities to get the morning started. They want it to be a highenergy, fun event, John says. A team from Atlanta comes to host the conference to ensure the event
maximizes the student engagement.
“I appreciate that because it’s true that you can have great content, but if the event isn’t engaging, the students won’t be open to receiving the information,” John says. “Learning has to be fun.”
They try to incorporate a theme for each
conference, and the one for this year came from the keynote speaker’s book, 8 Essential Exchanges: What You Have to Give Up to Go Up. The goal is for the message to especially hit home with students not currently taking on leadership roles.
“Having the biggest impact in schools and the community isn’t about getting the top leaders engaged. They’re already engaged and making a difference,” John says. “It’s when you can reach the students right there in the middle who want to make a change and have a positive impact, but they don’t see themselves as leaders.”
While he didn’t know what format this conference would still be in nearly a decade later—or if it will change in the future—John says he’s sure that the need for cultivating leaders will still be important for high school students.
“When the reason you’re doing something is right and the motives are pure, it will always continue in some form. I think it will continue to grow and evolve,” John says. “There are really exciting things on the horizon with student leadership. Leadership development in our county will continue indefinitely.”
The Journey Shapers Award is one given selectively each year to individuals who go above and beyond their call of duty, especially to those who help “shape the journey” of those around them in a positive way. Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks presented the first-ever student-earned award to the Calera High School varsity volleyball team for the athletes’ efforts to honor Brighton Clary, a Sylacauga High School student athlete, who unexpectedly passed away. Here, interim head coach Meredith Giangrosso offers her thoughts on the team’s tribute.
What made the student athletes’ efforts be commended so much as for them to earn the Journey Shapers Award?
“We were playing Sylacauga as our opening game, and [Calera’s] head coach reached out to me, [saying], ‘Hey, they recently over the summer lost a player. We need to do something for them,’” Meredith says. She recalls how the girls wept, listening to Brighton’s story. The team decided to wear Brighton’s number on ribbons in their hair during the opener’s games. “One girl said, ‘Well, I can get some flowers,’” Meredith says. “She paid for those out of her own pocket. We [dedicated] the game to [Brighton] and played it in her memory.” These actions to honor Brighton’s memory at what is considered a “rival school” showed that no competition is more important than the fellowship between players, which prompted Dr. Brooks to honor the team’s efforts.
What were the team’s thoughts and feelings about dedicating the game to Brighton?
“They were just doing a simple act of kindness,” Meredith explains. Giving without thought of reward is one quality unique to each recipient of the Journey Shapers Award. The students felt humbled by dedicating the game to Brighton because they respect how such a loss impacts one’s “family.” “We consider our players as family. Imagining playing that first game without an important member of their family is heartbreaking. We just wanted to let them know that we are supporting [them]. We never expected it to leave that gym. The parents, the spectators were in tears. It was such an emotional moment,” she recalls.
What does it mean for the team to be the first students to ever receive such a prestigious award?
“It was amazing and is something I know will stick with them forever,” Meredith says. She recalls how honored the students felt, especially after news broke of their actions to honor Brighton, so many came to watch their practices. “These 13 players are the only [students] to have gotten it. Only 10 [recipients] so far have gotten this award,” she says.
How often have the students worn these ribbons?
“The girls have loved their ribbons so much,” Meredith explains. “They keep them tied to their backpacks.” The students carry on Brighton’s memory now wherever they go. What better way to remember a life cut too short than to hold her memory on their person everywhere they go? Meredith says she’s proud the team has made such an effort to continue on Brighton’s legacy.
Can you speak about how far this team has come?
“Their hearts are as big as the gym they play in,” Meredith says, smiling. “They are a fantastic group of girls. They give 110%. They have really good parents. I knew right away as soon as Coach Todd approached me with this idea that they would embrace this and take it and run with it. They surprise me every day with some of the kind acts that they do. I can’t say enough about them. I am so glad they are getting this recognition because now everyone can see what I see on the floor daily. I couldn’t be more proud.”
HHaving grown up in “the country” in Jemison, Leslie Paschal knows a good traditional Southern menu and how to make it. After only a few days upon opening on Tuesday, Aug. 2, word about her new restaurant in Calera, DC’s Smokehouse, quickly spread on social media, with more than 1200 Facebook likes and comments such as, “Best barbecue by far.” Just a month later on Labor Day, DC’s Smokehouse sold 156 Boston Butts and 96 slabs of ribs.
“The first 30 days we already had 800 shares on Facebook. It was amazing,” Leslie says. “I cannot thank our customers enough for their patience and kindness and for absolutely blowing us away.”
Leslie says what makes DC’s Smokehouse, which
she describes as a “mobile trailer turned bank turned office turned restaurant,” stand out is the fact that it’s a full-service restaurant in an area of very few eateries around their location, which is across from the Calera City Hall parking lot.
“No other restaurant in the area offers what we have,” she says.
Although the restaurant is mainly known for its barbecue, Leslie says everything on the menu has been a hit, with daily specials like Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, BLTs, DC’s Club Sandwiches and patty melts. Fish Fridays are every Friday. After popular demand, she has also planned to start a “Meat and Three” menu. Everything is made in-house, she says, with nothing out of a box.
“My kids can do some of the short-order things, but I do most of the cooking,” Leslie says. “BBQ sauce, desserts, everything is made right here.”
She says the most popular item by far is their own special hot hamburger. Rumored to be unique to Chilton County where Leslie is from, a hot hamburger is made with two ground beef patties laid on top of an open-faced bun with brown gravy and onions on the top.
“People have about lost their minds over those hot hamburgers,” Leslie says. “Most hamburgers only the patty is hot, but these are all hot. Not spicy hot, just very warm.”
When talking about the menu, Leslie is sure not to give away too much information, like the ingredients in her twisted tomatoes, which are fried green tomatoes that are called so because of the flavor, not the shape.
“Our twisted tomatoes are actually flat,” she says. “I put some Cajun seasoning, blackened spice, a little this and a little that.”
Her banana poke cake and homemade banana pudding are also “secret recipes.”
“I just put it together. That’s how we do a lot of things here. We just get in there, have fun and if it’s a hit, we put it out there. I came up with Boom Fries because when you eat them you’re like, ‘Boom!’”
Leslie says anything people want, they can make it.
“The only thing that we don’t do is Mexican, except nachos, because we’ve got Mexican restaurants in the surrounding area that are off the chain. I can’t compete with them.”
She also accommodates all eating styles and dietary preferences.
“We have wraps and salads for our healthy
We want people to have good food. We treat everyone like family here.

eaters,” she says. “I have a sugar-free dessert. I grill foods like fish and chicken. I can also do gluten-free.”
Leslie says she didn’t really grow up knowing how to cook, but it was something that came later with experience.
“My mother could cook anything. I just wanted to grow up and marry someone rich who could hire maids,” she says, laughing.
When Leslie got older, she got a job at a Chinese restaurant, where she began to learn about cooking and preparation. She later managed a restaurant for 18 years and eventually began catering parties, birthdays and weddings. After many years in the business, she decided to retire and stay home for a year.
Then one day a mutual friend of her and her husband, former Calera Fire Department Deputy Chief Hilton Shirey, came to her with an offer to become business partners and start a new restaurant. Chief Shirey, who had retired right before the pandemic and cooked at the Talladega Superspeedway, where he was the former fire chief, was looking for a new venture. DC stands for Deputy Chief, and the sign includes a picture of his fire helmet. Leslie says he often comes in to help cook, smoking barbecue ribs and chicken.
“My daddy said if you ever retire, don’t sit down. He said if you sit down, you’ll die,” Chief Shirey says. “This has been an

IN MEMORY OF JESSICA PASCHAL
Leslie and her husband, Jeff, had been together for three years when his 18-yearold daughter, Jessica, was killed in a car accident in Mineral Springs. Leslie says Jessica was only about a half-mile away from home when she went over an incline in the road and her car hit a couple of cows that were crossing, causing her car to leave the roadway and go into a pond. She was airlifted to UAB with life threatening injuries and remained in a coma. She passed away on March 18, 2018.
“She was Daddy’s little girl,” Jeff Paschal says. “Losing a child is something I don’t wish on anyone.”
Leslie says she loved Jessica like her own, and the ensuing grief was life-changing for Jeff and the rest of the family.
“We got married six months later on August 18, but he didn’t get deep into the
grief until a few months after that,” Leslie says.
Haley, who is Leslie’s oldest daughter, had her grandson, Talyn, before Jessica passed away.
“He clung to Jeff a lot. I think that helped him with the grief.”
In spring 2019, Jeff created the Jessica Paschal Memorial Scholarship in association with Jemison High School and its softball program, where Jessica played.
Jessica Lauren Paschal Day was held on May 4, where a co-ed slow pitch softball
game and home run derby was held in her honor. Jeff says the event and donations from corporate contractors raised almost $13,000 that first year.
“That next year when Covid hit, it sort of threw a wrench in everything, and since then we haven’t done much with it,” Jeff says. “But we’re trying to start it back up again.”
As of press time, Jeff says they are considering avenues for continuing the scholarship, such as holding a fundraiser at DC’s Smokehouse in the future or setting up a way for customers to contribute to the scholarship at the restaurant.
Those interested in donating can learn more by calling 205-668-2161 for more information.
Our hearts go out to Jessica’s loved ones. Her life, though cut short, blessed so many others. May we all learn to love as she did.
adventure.”
DC’s Smokehouse is takeout only but takes walk-in orders and has an outside dining area, which seats about 25 people. With a TV, it’s perfect for football season. The restaurant also has a convenient drive-through. The lobby area honors Chief Shirey, while the outside dining area has a Heroes Wall, which is the brainchild of Chief Shirey’s wife, Jean.
“She’s the one who came up with the idea and keeps it up,” he says. “We have pictures of fallen first responders and people who have passed away while serving.”
Leslie says she likes to give back to the community, so she plans to have fundraisers from time to time.
“Last Saturday, we did a fundraiser for a dance school in Calera,” she says. “Those girls sold 65 Boston Butts.”
Leslie says it’s been “work, work, work” ever since they began preparing to open the restaurant last February, but their close family bond keeps her going. She describes her husband, Jeff, as her restaurant handyman.
“He can build anything and fix anything,” she says.
Although Leslie’s daughter, Shelby, is the only full-time employee in the family, her daughter, Haley, and son, Sidney, fill in when necessary. Haley’s sons, Tyson and Talyn, Sidney’s daughter, Sadie, and Leslie’s stepdaughter Jennifer Smith’s daughter, Tesslyn, complete the family circle.
“I wouldn’t make it a day without them,” Leslie says. “All the glory goes to them and God.”
Alexis Reeves, Claire Lagrone and Kayla Ray make up the rest of the staff, which Leslie also considers family. Claire and Kayla followed Leslie from her previous job.
“I’ve known those girls since they were itty-bitty. I treat them like they’re my own,” she says.
Leslie says they try to keep a fun family atmosphere and have already had a couple of funny memories.
“One day a bag caught on fire that was under a heat lamp,” she says. “The girls were standing there
not knowing what to do, so they grabbed a bucket of water and threw it in there.”
At the end of the day, Leslie says her main priority is making sure customers feel welcome and enjoy their experience.
“We’re honest and we work hard,” she says. “We want people to have good food. We treat everyone like family here.”
DC’s Smokehouse is located at 7850 Highway 31. Phone-in orders can be made by calling 205-6682161.
HOME STYLE&
A TRAVELER’S AESTHETIC
Kelsey and Craig Justice’s quaint abode is decorated uniquely, partly in thanks to their inspiration from their travels abroad.
BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY EVELYN ADAMSSSitting down with Kelsey and Craig Justice and their lively 2-year-old daughter, Windsor, one can tell their appreciation for culture and how this love inspires their tastes. Kelsey was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, but says her itch to see the world could only be satisfied through making memories in new places.
The two-time entrepreneur has not only decorated their home with aspects of her family’s adventures, but she has also created two businesses whose core purposes are to capture the beauty in people across the world. The pair owns their own marketing agency, Justice Creative Co., and their own photography business, Kelsey Justice Photography, in which they specialize in weddings and family portraiture. Both business ventures, Kelsey says, allows them to travel and to meet people outside of Birmingham.
After the couple married in a romantic elopement on the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, they settled down in a tiny abode near Montclair Road. After having their daughter in 2020, they realized more space and place for her play in a neighborhood was what they needed. They knew in their new home that they wanted it to be a places of fellowship, too.
“I am very much a person who likes change,” Kelsey explains. The idea of packing up her home and moving someplace unique excites her.
The bright eyed and bushy-tailed couple ended up moving near Kelsey’s stomping grounds of Brook Highland, specifically in Greystone. “I knew moving here would be really good,” Kelsey says, recalling the family atmosphere of the community. “The schools are great!”
Now in a white-walled two-story house, Kelsey and Craig say they faced a new challenge: turning their house into a home.
While others may look at the lack of color in a new home as an overwhelming hump to trudge over, Kelsey says she was definitive in her choices. She chose to start in the living room, basing the home’s hues off of her design choices there. She recalls her love of accent walls because dark colors can make a room feel less open and cozy, but bright, vibrant colors can open a room to be more inviting. So much can happen with one, simple color.
Kelsey painted the black accent wall in the living room first, then added lighting fixtures, a framed TV, plants and family portraits to fill the room. One room’s projects turned into a whole home renovation that has years later likened the company of many.
Kelsey says her and Craig’s goals were to always “make it family-friendly but not compromise beauty and style.” Now, their beautiful home is not just gorgeously innate, but also welcoming to friends and family of all walks of life. Whether one is from Peru, England, the Caribbean or nearly anywhere in the Eastern hemisphere, he will likely find something from home in the Justices’ welcoming abode.
Perhaps if everyone could appreciate culture as they do, the world would be both a more understanding and aestheticallypleasing place. To the Justices, thank you for creating a home where all God’s people are welcome and appreciated.
Face of the Home
The precious family chose to live in Greystone and conveniently, Windsor’s school is within walking distance of their house.
Dining Room
Kelsey often likes to decorate from “the outside-in,” meaning she bases the room’s colors, furniture and decor usually off of one inspiring piece. The portrait featuring desert terrain in Joshua Tree, California, is the focal point of the room in which all of the room’s aesthetic was based off of.
Main Bedroom
Kelsey and Craig’s headboard is a Sherpa design, which pairs nicely with the textured aspects in their room. The landscape above the bed is one Kelsey painted herself. The overhead lamps are from lampsplus.com, and the nightstands are from Ballard Designs.
Main Bathroom

Kelsey and Craig have traveled all over the world. Kelsey, herself, has traveled to five continents and nearly 20 countries. The adorable pair always brings back something they can frame to remember their experiences. This is also a great way for them to teach Windsor a love for other cultures, too.
Living Room
Kelsey says she would describe her style as “modern meets traditional.”
“I knew that I wanted to paint that fireplace and that wall black,” Kelsey says. “I got that light fixture not too far after that. I want things to last a while but still be something that speaks to me and feels different.
‘Timeless but unique’ is what I feel like I try to balance.”

Pictured are several of the Justice family photos, including some of Kelsey and Craig’s wedding photos from their ceremony on the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland! Their wedding location, she says, happens to be the filming site for one scene in the Harry Potter franchise and several scenes from The Princess Bride.
“It was a clean slate. It was taupe walls everywhere, white cabinets, basic, affordable finishes,” Kelsey says, recalling her kitchen remodel. “Changing light fixtures, cabinet knobs and paint colors makes a massive difference for a little budget. You don’t have to spend a lot, but it really elevates the home.”
Antiques in the Modern
“I don’t think I would’ve ever chosen a blue, French-style secretary. That’s not my normal, but I want to pull in older pieces. I’ll see an Instagram post that I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I have to have that cabinet,’ which is what happened with my dining room cabinet,’” Kelsey says.
A DIFFERENT WAY TO EDUCATE
Evangel Classical Christian School (ECCS), a ministry of Evangel Presbyterian Church (PCA) and located in Alabaster, Alabama, provides a unique approach to education that seeks to develop leaders who are equipped to transform the culture for Christ. All ECCS classes are taught through the lens of Scripture to support an integrated Christian worldview and to shape students’ minds as well as hearts. Students are not expected only to memorize facts for tests, but they are also encouraged and taught to think critically and logically about the world around them and to apply what they are learning to benefit themselves and others.
Evangel seeks to partner with parents to prepare students for their lives through a unique, three-
phased approach to their education that includes the schools of Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. Designed with a child’s developmental stages in mind, Grammar School is grades K3 through 5th, Logic is 6th through 8th, and Rhetoric is 9th through 12th. Subjects are not approached as individual disciplines, but rather as a holistic way to look for God, His work, His purpose, and His glory in all creation and through all that they are studying. The classical approach to learning helps build the foundation for students to express themselves thoughtfully to reflect truth with precision, conviction, and clarity.
Parents who are looking for an educational option where their children are nurtured spiritually
and intellectually can find a perfect fit at ECCS. “Classical education is, I think, the only educational system that really gives kids something beautiful to want,” Julie McGuffey, a Rhetoric school faculty member said, “because I want them to love the God who created them and who created all of these subjects.” The “something beautiful” that Mrs. McGuffey speaks about is a love of learning that is fostered by a sincere love of God, His creation, and His will for their lives, for “in Christ, all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17).
Students are not only prepared to have a successful career in college and in the workforce, but they are also guided as a whole person, educated to pursue a life glorifying to God. The school aims for each child to flourish in wisdom, courage,
justice, self-control, faith, hope, and love. Bible classes at every grade level and chapel services further promote spiritual maturity. Student life is also an integral part of ECCS. With clubs like drama and scholar’s bowl, athletics, and a unique house system, students have many options to be involved in various activities.
Ultimately, ECCS seeks to glorify God by shaping the hearts and minds of covenant children through a distinctively classical and unapologetically Christian education with the goal of raising up ambassadors for Christ. If you value a partnership with a school that provides a classical Christian education, then you should consider Evangel Classical Christian School. For more information, please visit the school’s website at evangelclassical.com.

Second Chances
Local nonprofit, My Sister’s Place, is rescuing women from addiction and abuse through a 12-step, Christian-based recovery program because everyone deserves a second chance.
BY CARMEN BROWN | PHOTOS BY BLAIR RAMSEYAs she was growing up, both of her parents were heroin users and were often away from home. Her father, also an alcoholic, often traveled for work. Her mother was emotionally disconnected from Crissie and her sister. By the time Crissie was 12 years old, her mother was giving her narcotics and pain pills.
“I didn’t have a good home life or school life,” she says. “Pills made me feel good inside. I had struggled with suicidal thoughts. I took a whole bottle of
aspirin once, and my mom didn’t do anything. She told me to just sweat it out.”
In 2009, when Crissie was 25, her mother was killed in a car accident. Ten months later, her father, who had been devastated and heartbroken from the loss, took his own life.
By the time she was 34, Crissie only knew a life of jail and drugs. She was about to go back to jail again because she wasn’t doing well on her probation. She knew she had to get help, or she was going to die.
Crissie Ashworth seemed to have the odds stacked against her from the beginning.
“Then one day I was shooting up with a friend, who said they knew someone they had been in prison with who had gotten her life together and opened up a place to help people,” she says. “If I had not had that conversation, I wouldn’t be here today.”
That “someone from prison” was Cindy Hildebrand, who is now the founder and director of My Sister’s Place.
Located in Montevallo, My Sister’s Place (named after an inscription on a mosaic mirror she saw while exploring a potential housing unit) is a residential, faith-based 12-step recovery program for women who come to heal from addiction, abuse and other unhealthy situations.
Cindy’s problems with drugs and alcohol began during her teenage years. From the early 1990s to the early 2000s, she had several DUIs and had been in and out of prison and drug court.
“Drug court saved my life. Long-term jail sitting changed my life,” Cindy says. “My life was falling
apart, but people kept telling me things can be different.”
It was in 2004 that she decided to put her faith in Jesus Christ and began following the 12-step program at Celebrate Recovery (now called Living Recovery), at Christian Life Fellowship in Calera. She later started leading the program herself, bringing her message to local jails.
Cindy first felt the nudge to start a residential recovery program in 2008. She sent out a few letters but got no responses. Then a few years later, a conversation with a man at Celebrate Recovery led her to try again.
“I had an attorrney and a few other people, who were willing to get on board,” Cindy says. “I like to use the analogy of the old Get Smart TV show, where he keeps walking through the doors, and they just keep opening.”
The first 40 days focus on sobriety and recovery while going through the Christ-centered, 12-step program. Each woman is assigned her own sponsor,
who acts as a mentor throughout the process.
Savannah Grace, development officer and program assistant (who is also Cindy’s daughter and youth pastor at Christian Life Fellowship), said the small staff of 11 make sure the women get any kind of support they need to go through the program.
“Our staff members make excellent mentors and laycounselors because of their personal experience in the recovery process,” Savannah says. “We partner with social workers and keep them updated about the residents’ progress, and we help each resident to fulfill any necessary legal requirements or programs that they are responsible for.”
Our Facilities
Savannah says the goal is for women to be healthier and balanced in all aspects of their lives.
“We also help women to gain financial stability and responsibility. In addition to teaching them money management, we also teach time-management, parenting and other responsibilities. Women can begin looking for a job after approximately 45 days in our program, and we help them to prepare for the application and interview process. Women do not drive while they are in our program, and we take responsibility for transporting them to recovery meetings, church, interviews, etc.”
Savannah says the program averages about 45 women, with
approximately 75-80 percent of residents staying past the entry-level period. For those that complete the program, at least 70 percent continue to do well, including Crissie, who came to My Sister’s Place on June 6, 2017. She felt it was her last resort.
“The love was very unfamiliar. I didn’t know anything about Jesus. When I first heard Cindy speak, I didn’t know if I believed what she was saying, but I knew she believed what she was saying.”
My Sister’s Place operates on the belief that addiction is a “heart problem,” which can only be mended through a relationship with God.
“The problem was my mind,” Crissie says. “I had to learn to work the 12-step process. The fourth and fifth step you work through the trauma. This is where we lose a lot of people. At the end when you make amends, that’s when you see the true change.”
Residents attend church regularly at Christian Life Fellowship. Pastor Mark Davis, who also serves on the advisory board, says My Sister’s Place is one of the hidden gems in Shelby County with the positive impact it’s had on women in the community.
“Many of them don’t have a Bible background,”
Pastor Mark says. “Some of them have a heart for God, but they’re chasing something they don’t know they’re chasing: peace, security, identity. They’re looking for someone to love them.”
Pastor Mark says the most rewarding part of the program is watching relationships between mothers and their children be restored.
“Every Sunday morning, the kids will run up and hug me, and it just melts my heart,” Pastor Mark says. “To see those moms get their kids back, to see those relationships heal, that kind of reward is priceless.”
Although the program typically lasts about nine to 12 months, each woman’s situation is dealt with on an individual basis. Some women have left and returned several times before they were ready for true change.
“They go as far as they can, and then they come back because they realize they need the accountability,” Pastor Mark says. “There’s no ‘I told you so’ here. We just give them a hug and love them.”

and her father, an alcoholic, had passed away. She left the program after four days. Two years later, she was in a car accident. Tiffany’s feet were severely crushed. She had to be airlifted to UAB. Her husband of five years, Christopher, was killed instantly.
“I was completely lost and shattered,” she says. “He was my best friend.”
Tiffany started drinking and taking painkillers. She reached out to Crissie and asked for a Bible because she didn’t have one.
“She told me, ‘Don’t let his death be in vain,’” Tiffany says.
Tiffany called Cindy about returning to My Sister’s Place, telling her about the accident and how she couldn’t work because she could not walk.
“A few minutes after I talked to her, she said someone came in and asked her if anyone needed help with an entry fee. That was God,” she says.
Cindy and Savannah both emphasized that My Sister’s Place is not strictly for recovering alcoholics or drug users.
“It is a life recovery program that is open to anyone struggling with any kind of issue as long as that person is willing to work the program,” Cindy says. “It’s for broken people who need time to heal.”
“We get people from all kinds of backgrounds,” Savannah
says. “People struggling with mental health issues, domestic violence, homelessness or unhealthy dependent living situations.”
My Sister’s Place recently celebrated its 11th anniversary in October and continues to grow. My Sister’s Place is currently looking for more after-care housing for women like Crissie and Tiffany, who have come through the program with their lives forever changed.
Tiffany was able to get grief counseling through the church, and she went through physical therapy so she could walk again. She now works a full-time job.
“I was in the deepest, darkest place,” she says. “The only way out I knew was death. God opened the door and made a way.”
Now the assistant ministry leader at My Sister’s Place, Crissie feels it is her mission to rescue other women who have lost hope.
“I believe if you’ve been in a dark pit, go find somebody else who’s in that pit and get them out,” she says.
Crissie now has restored relationships with her two daughters, ages 20 and 16, and her 8-year-old son.
“The Lord really had to come in and work,” she says. “I want to tell people you can live another way. Look at my life now. You can have this, too.”

A VISION FOR CARE
After having expanded an office to Pelham in March 2022, UAB Callahan Eye seeks to provide their patients, both pediatric and adults, with the best possible eye care.
“At UAB Callahan Eye, our mission is to make sure that our patients have convenient access to care,” said Rett Grover, chief executive officer at UAB Callahan Eye. “With our Pelham location, we are now able to serve the residents of Pelham and the surrounding communities with the same expert care they are used to receiving at our downtown location at a clinic that is closer to home.”
The UAB Callahan Eye–Pelham clinic provides patients with comprehensive pediatric and adult eye care and vision services—from routine eye exams to the diagnosis and treatment of complicated eye diseases, including pediatric and adult glaucoma and cataract services.
The clinic also features a state-of-the-art imaging diagnostic center and an on-site optical shop, where Callahan patients receive a minimum 15-percent discount on frames (not included with insurance).
“Shelby County has so many vibrant and engaged communities, and we are excited to be a part of the growth and excitement in this area,” Grover said. “Our opthamologists and optometrists will be able to deliver expert eye care and vision services in a convenient location while they build relationships and provide exceptional patient experiences for those living in or near the city of Pelham.”
Dr. Carrie Smith said something people can do to be more proactive when it comes to their eye care is start with a healthy diet and lifestyle.
“It is important to visit your primary care physician for regular checkups to make sure you
Pelham UAB Callahan Eye office seeks to provide Shelby County patients with quality eye care
are optimizing your overall health and managing any chronic health conditions,” Smith said. “Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and many other health issues can have a negative impact on eye health. Always wear sunglasses outdoors that provide 100 percent UV protection, even in the winter months, to help reduce the risk of premature cataract development and other UVrelated eye problems.”
Smith said a common question asked from patients is how often they should have their eyes examined and what can they do to make sure they are taking care of their eyes.
“It is important for healthy adults to have an eye exam at least every two years, even if they aren’t having vision problems. Not all eye problems cause noticeable changes in vision and your eye doctor may even be able to detect signs of undiagnosed health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes during a routine exam.
“If you have a family history of eye disease, or have vision or health problems, then it is best to touch base with your eyecare provider yearly,” Smith said. “To help lower the risk of eye disease, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, wear sunglasses, and know your family’s eye history to determine your risk for eye disease.”
When it comes to children, Dr. Robert Tauscher said every child should undergo a vision screening exam by their pediatrician (or other properly trained healthcare provider) as a newborn, between 6-12 months old, and at their annual pediatric “well child” checkup thereafter.
Some of the most common problems affecting children’s vision include strabismus (crossed eyes), amblyopia (often referred to as a “lazy eye”), and refractive error (needing glasses).
“Because of this, parents should be on the lookout for eye misalignments–one or both eyes consistently ‘crossing in’ or ‘turning out,’” Tauscher said. “They should look for more typical signs of blurry or poor vision, such as squinting to see objects in the distance or struggling to read/ identify words that they otherwise know.”
The UAB Callahan Eye Hospital has been a leader in the provision of eye care for almost 60 years.
Now with the expansion of several locations in Birmingham and the surrounding areas, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital will continue providing innovative eye care to its patients.
The Pelham office is located at 3143 Pelham Parkway Suite 200. For more information call (205) 325-8620 or visit uabmedicine.org.

So, before you hit I-59 South, you simply MUST visit Alexa’s eponymous website, alexapulitzer.com, and read what is basically her love letter to New Orleans entitled “Guide to NOLA” at the bottom of the homepage. Mardi Gras World
For many, New Orleans is synonymous with Mardi Gras. To be sure, the annual celebration between Kings’ Day and the start of Lent is a sight to behold and experience. Perhaps responsible for more than $1 billion in revenue for the city, Mardi Gras is serious business. Go behind the scenes at Mardi Gras World to learn the history of Mardi Gras, see how floats are made and maybe take more than a few Instagram-worthy photos. mardigrasworld.com
Take a cooking class
In a city that is renowned for its multitude of represented cuisines, why not take a cooking class and bring the flavors home with you? Explore more at the New Orleans School of Cooking neworleansschoolofcooking.com or do a deeper dive at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum southernfood.org/events-1 or book a private class at New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute nochi.org
uAlex Beard Studio – Equal parts work space and studio, travel gallery and wanderlust zone, Alex Beard’s studio is a must-visit. His work is inspired by a love of animals and travels to Africa and is teeming with what he calls “abstract natu ralism.” Kids will marvel at the intricacies, and adults will feel a yearning to own a piece. Do it. You’ll never regret buying the art you love. alexbeardstudio.com
uHome Malone – New Orleans gets down in your soul, and you’ll find yourself wanting to bring that bonhomie and joie de vivre back to Birmingham with you. Pop into locally-owned Home Malone for fun door décor or yard art that will remind you of this holiday trip, anytime of year. homemalonenola.com
Stroll Magazine Street
Spend an afternoon bouncing between the fantastic retail emporiums that line this beloved street. You are bound to knock out your entire holiday shopping list in an afternoon – that is, if you don’t get distracted by all the pretty things you want for yourself. Not to be missed:
uDunn & Sonnier – More than a florist, more than an antiques shop, more than you can imagine on every surface and wall. These are the folks respon sible for the famed rose display in the lobby of the Windsor Court Hotel – go see them in person and bring home a treasure for your own home. dunnandsonnier.com
uPerlis – Located way uptown, Perlis is the go-to clothing shop here, carrying such brands as Barbour, Peter Millar and local brand TASC. But what you might also know them for is their signa ture crawfish logo, which will put you in a New Orleans state of mind wherever you are. perlis.com

WHERE TO EAT
You could close your eyes and throw a Mardi Gras doubloon and hit some place great to eat in New Orleans. Be it tables clothed in white linen or weathered wooden high-tops flanked by worn barstools, the same love and pride goes into all the food this town serves up. Make reservations where you can, pack extra patience when you must wait in line. This is by no means an exhaustive list but just a great place to start.
Chemin à la Mer
This sexy and sophisticated spot atop the Four Seasons in downtown New Orleans offers a beautiful river view, with a menu featuring so much of what chef Donald Link and his team do best: take the freshest local ingredients and simply elevate them. Think blue crab boulettes, duck confit, oysters. cheminalamer.com/neworleans.
Frankie & Johnny’s
This uptown neighborhood joint bears the patina of decades of pitchers of local beer, discarded oyster shells and more than a few tall-tales told. Grab a seat and order a couple dozen chargrilled oysters to start – you can look at the rest of the menu later. frankieandjohnnys.net.
Seafood is one thing New Orleans gets right everytime.
Domilise’s Po-Boy and Bar
There are as many iterations of poboys in New Orleans as there are Mardi Gras krewes. You just have to find the kind you like. But the basics must include the freshest bread (usually from Leidenheimer’s bakery) and something good stuffed in between – it could be fried shrimp or oysters but might also be alligator sausage or roast beef. Grab a stack of po-boys at Domilise’s Po-Boy and Bar and head to Audubon Park for a makeshift picnic. domilisespoboys.com
La Boulangerie
During Mardi Gras season, La Boulangerie turns out some of the most fantastic King Cakes you’ve ever seen (ask them about The Elvis). But this Magazine Street bakery and sandwich shop is renowned year round for the caliber of their fare, which includes croissants, turnovers, bread pudding, savory biscuits, quiche, sandwiches with Butcher ham and Comté cheese, tarts, pies and really great coffee. laboulangerienola.com
Mosquito Supper Club
Founded to celebrate the bounty of the seafaring community that surrounds the Crescent City, the Mosquito Supper Club menu mirrors those waters, with an ebb and flow of what the fishermen haul in. Go hungry and curious; you won’t be disappointed. Reservations through Tock and via email only. mosquitosupperclub.com
Make This at Home
Even if you can’t get to New Orleans for the holidays, you can still have a bit of that Big Easy feeling at home, with this boozy egg nog from Cochon Butcher. Go ahead and double (or triple) the recipe. Jars of this holiday treat will be exactly what your friends and neighbors hope you’ll gift them when you come a-calling.

3) Fold the whites into the yolks.
4) Add all the dairy and alcohol. Mix thoroughly. Pour into mason jars and seal; label and share, share, share!

Neighbors Supporting Neighbors
The Shelby County Tornadoes
The greatest joy of being a small town mayor is the opportunity to see people come together to support each other such as the cleanup after some recent tornadoes that devastated parts of Shelby County.
MY SHELBY COUNTY
DAVID MITCHELL Mayor of ColumbianaHometown Eateries
The Local & Just a Tish
The Local is a favorite watering hole of ours. I have my own bar stool! Kathy and I also enjoy the wine, cheese and more at Just a Tish.
Home Again Columbiana
I grew up in Birmingham, but my wife, Kathy, is a hometown Columbiana girl. We met on the beach “a while ago,” and Columbiana has been home for us, since. An Air Force and Defense Industry career pulled us away for many years, but we always gravitated back home and, for good, after “retiring” in 2020. Later that year, I was elected mayor. This year we celebrate our 50th anniversary.
Graybeard Wisdom
Years of Servitude
With more than 45 years of experience in the Air Force and Defense Industry, I’ve had the opportunity to travel, work, live and/or do business on six of seven continents. As an Adjunct Professor of International Management at the University of Montevallo, another Shelby County gem, it’s been my pleasure to impart lessons learned to eager students. Through the years, it’s been a pleasure to serve my country and the people of Shelby County, especially.
