Yuletide Cheer

Celebrate the magic of the season with Shelby County festivities this winter. Photo by Jeremy Raines Design by Rowan Futrell

Fear keeps us alive by protecting us from the unknown. The evil that one knows is better than the evil he doesn’t, right? Don Stewart would disagree. The epitome of faith over fear, Don attended medical school, but as soon as he graduated and became a licensed doctor, he quit. Talk about hurdling over the status quo. Don hated every minute of medical school, but he persisted until he finally had enough–and coincidentally graduated with honors–that he gave up his family’s dream of him becoming a doctor and pursued his own dream–becoming an artist. Not long after did he meet the love of his life, Sue Ellen Brown. Together, Don and Sue Ellen not only pursued a life on an artist’s dime, but they succeeded and have become some of the South’s most prolific artists with their work being shown all over the world. Sue Ellen’s token “dragons” became the signature design for a set of greeting cards by The Best Card Company, and several of Don’s drawings were picked up by Hobby Lobby and are now being sold internationally. After nearly 40 years in the art business, Don and Sue Ellen say that they’ve never been happier, but happiness, they also say, doesn’t always come from achieving success. Rather, happiness, in its truest form, comes from one’s ability to pursue his heart’s desires without remorse. Listening to both of them reminded me of how much I love and miss my own dad, who made his heavenly debut all too soon. Every day, he encouraged me to walk by faith, not by sight–that my dreams were only a step away–a step out of fear. Don, Sue Ellen and my dad have all managed to remind me that comparison is the thief of joy. Fear not only prevents us from embracing life’s unknowns, but it also constructs our mindsets to believe that we do not possess the willpower to achieve what seems to come to others so easily. If fear prevents us from daring to dream big, wouldn’t fear just mean one’s goals are just one positive mindset away? I believe each person possesses the willpower to achieve what he thinks is impossible–the only thing holding him back is himself. I hope for each of you, readers, that you all take a page out of Don, Sue Ellen and even my own father’s book: be brave. Dare to do the impossible. Even if you try and do not first succeed, you will learn just how capable you are of achieving your dreams. Dream big, readers.

DARE TO DREAM

Life’s little clichés will sometimes be the catalyst to spark a dream into reality. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY JAMES AND RACHEL CULVER ShelbyLiving.com

18 November/December 2023

T

The most fearless people in the world are those who not only dare to dream outside the status quo, but also those who discipline themselves to accomplish the impossible. Fear is a construct of the human psyche– one that keeps us “alive,” setting us on a path of complacency and self-assurance. In some cases, however, fear is a necessary evil because it keeps us tethered to reality. But, to those brave enough to embrace “insanity,” fear is just a paper weight. Part of growing up means experiencing trials and triumphing from them, too. A lot of these life lessons, though many of them clichés, actually hold truth weighing greater than fear. One of the most common clichés, “Do something you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life,” ironically is the most truthful of all. No such conundrum is as evident in one’s life as it is for some of the most fearless in society–artists–and dreamers Don Stewart and Sue Ellen Brown can vouch for it. “Art is a fulfillment of my purpose,” Sue Ellen says. “It’s not always been easy, but I’ve not regretted the challenge.”

Having a career spanning four decades, Sue Ellen says she knew from the time she could talk that she wanted to be an artist. Nothing made her heart sing more than bringing visions into fruition on a blank canvas. Sue Ellen earned her B.F.A. in Advertising Design from the University of North Texas. After graduating, she worked with renowned artists such as Don Ivan Punchatz–known for his illustrations in “National Geographic,” “Playboy” and “Time”–and later accepted a position as a staff artist at Hallmark, where she designed products’ illustrations. “One of the nice things about working there is we got to do the entire product line,” Sue Ellen says. “I did everything from gift wrap to greeting cards to ornaments.” Sue Ellen slowly started building her reputation as a fine artist across the Southeast, designing for clients such as McDonald’s, Denny’s and Pepsi, too. She even illustrated several children’s books as well. Some of her most notable work can be seen in novels “Time-Life Family Time Bible Stories: The First Christmas,” written by Patricia Daniels; “Gleaming

Bright” and “Orphans of the Night,” which were both written by Josepha Sherman; and “Winter’s Child” by Mary K. Whittington. One of her most proud accomplishments was earning not one but two Paragon Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. Sue Ellen’s work was on display in the New York City Society of Illustrators’ Humor Exhibition for some time. While Sue Ellen’s reputation long precedes her, she credits her husband, Don, for much of her inspiration and “courage to dream big.” Don, funny enough, says it took him about 25 years to find his calling. Don earned his B.S. in Biology and Art at BirminghamSouthern College and later attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning his M.D. After graduating, Don, or “Dr. Stewart” was chosen for a competitive internship at the Mayo Clinic, where he says his greatest breakthrough was not actually in medicine at all. While interning at the Mayo Clinic, a nurse asked Don when was the last time he was happy. A little taken aback, Don replied that his last, fleeting memory of happiness was actually drawing composite images–tiny drawings within a larger mind-maze of drawings–in an art class he took at BSC. “I hated every minute of [medical school] and only by sheer tenacity hung around long enough to pass all of my general exams,” Don says, chuckling. “I got my basic license to practice

medicine, and I quit that day. I just didn’t see any reason to even show up again. I was a qualified practitioner of medicine for 15 years and never did anything with it except draw pictures.” Don, one of the most infamous dreamers of all, quit his profession with many thousands of dollars in student loans and no job–just a dream that he was made for something greater. This dream propelled him to go back to his roots– what made him happy–drawing. “[This style of drawing] occupied both sides of my brain, and it made my heart sing–and it still does 40 years later,” Don says. This fulfillment–this taste of happiness–was enough for Don to tailor his career to his artistic aspirations–ones that led him to meet the love of his life at an art show in Dallas, Texas, just a few years after walking out on his medical career for good. Don and Sue Ellen officially met in 1998 and by 1999, they tied the knot. Sue Ellen moved to North Carolina, where Don and his two children lived, and together, they navigated providing for a family of four on an artist’s dime. Don was eventually recruited to Birmingham, Alabama, for work, but after six short months, he decided he was not made to climb the corporate ladder. He and Sue Ellen took yet another leap of faith and opened their own art studio, DS Art, in downtown Homewood in 2002.

DS Art was open until the world shut down in 2020, and due to rent increasing post-pandemic, the couple relocated to their new studio space in Pelham in January 2022. Don says while their faith in “the big dream” was tested yet again, neither he nor Sue Ellen lost sight of their purpose: creating to defy the odds. Strolling through DS Art, one will have to make several trips looking up, down, right and left–for there is much more than what first meets the eye. Don’s drawings are incredibly detailed, and if one looks hard enough, he will see Don’s vision reflected in each portrait adorning the studio’s walls. When asked about his “ballpoint medium,” Don says, “I’ve already spent all of my academic career, which was sizable at that point, with a ballpoint pen in my hand. It’s what I used to take notes. It’s what I used to write essays. It’s what I used to do patient charts. So, I literally already had a groove cut into my middle finger on my right hand, where the pen sits.” Don would often doodle drawings into the margins of his homework or notes, so transitioning to drawing art with nothing but a black-ink, ballpoint pen was quite smooth. Sue Ellen, on the other hand, utilizes almost every medium there is to create her art. Some of her favorite pieces of artwork include her multi-medium dragon portraits, which are first

sketched with pencil, then painted over and finally, lightly airbrushed for a bit of artistic flair. In 2022, both Don and Sue Ellen were recruited by a talent agent, who helped build their brand on an international level. Several pieces of Sue Ellen’s airbrush and acrylic work are now on a collection of Magic: the Gathering Cards and Ravensburger Jigsaw Puzzles. Her signature “dragons” have also been turned into a set of greeting cards from The Best Card Company, too. Forty of Don’s composite images were converted into a coloring book called, “Quirky Collages to Color.” Not only has Don’s work been accepted into galleries in New Orleans and Gatlinburg, but his work was also sought after by Hobby Lobby, who struck a deal with Don, selling four of his prints in-store, nationwide. Don says he never could have imagined what true happiness feels like–more importantly, sharing such joy and career success with his love, Sue Ellen–had he stayed stagnant in fear, working as a doctor. Sure, his fear–his career–kept him “up with the Joneses,” but at what point is one no longer willing to sacrifice his sanity for appearance or some society-approved jurisdiction? “I used to do presentations at schools for career day, and I would tell my [students], ‘I want every one of

23

you to get my job,’” Don says. “That doesn’t mean you have to be an artist. I know a long haul truck driver that has my job. I know a trauma surgeon that has my job. They can’t wait to get out of bed to get at it because it’s too much fun, and it fulfills them.” Not every dream aligns with the societal status quo, but that’s the beauty in dreaming–to each his own. “There is that misconception that art is just ‘exhale’ and it appears,” Sue Ellen says. “It does take discipline–in some cases, courage.” While Don and Sue Ellen are now celebrating close to 40 years of being in the art business and 24 years of joyful union, they both agree that neither would be possible without a little faith and a whole lot of persistence. Dreams, they say, can be scary because they represent the impossible, “society’s insanities.” Truly, there is no one right path any dreamer can take, but what sweet solace one finds in embracing that of which is unknown to him. And, happiness, however out-of-reach it may seem, will always welcome dreamers who dare to do the impossible. DS Art is located at 3180 Pelham Parkway. It is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Saturday 10 a.m.4 p.m. Those interested in viewing or purchasing artwork can visit both dsart.com and zoolnart.com to support Don and Sue Ellen’s businesses.

Winter Holiday Children’s Reads Recommendations from

Alison Powers

Library Director at the Roy Downs Memorial Library

For the last eight years, Alison Powers has served as the library director at the Roy Downs Memorial Library in Calera. With the holidays approaching, Alison believes the best way to experience the magic of the season is through a child’s eyes. Here, Alison offers five children’s holiday book suggestions that will make wonderful read-alouds throughout the season.

Little Red Ruthie: A Hanukkah Tale By Gloria Koster | Holidays

This book is a fun way to introduce Hanukkah through a well-known tale, Little Red Riding Hood. The story touches on the traditions and food of the Hanukkah season, while also entertaining readers with a brave girl named Ruthie and an amusing wolf.

How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas?

By Jane Yolen and Mark Teague | Holidays

Children will laugh out loud at the illustrations and dinosaur antics, while they receive a subtle reminder of what is good behavior during the excitement and anticipation of the Christmas season.

How to Catch a Dragon

By Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton | Holidays

In this story, children are chasing and trying to catch a dragon through Lunar New Year celebrations! This story is set in China during the Spring Festival—the Chinese New Year. The bright colors, rhyming text and introduction of the Lunar New Year are beautifully set amongst the paper lanterns, red envelopes, fireworks, gold coins and more. The dragon will have to avoid trap after trap, as the kids aim to catch one of their wildest dreams.

Snowmen at Christmas

By Mark and Caralyn Buehner | Holidays

The illustrations in “Snowmen at Christmas” are gorgeous and contain hidden images that everyone

will love to search for. The rhyming scheme of the book invites little imaginations to consider what snowmen do all night while celebrating Christmas. On Christmas Eve, several snowmen families stir outside as they gather in the town square for a night of caroling, dancing and of course, anticipating a visit from Santa Claus. Children will learn why they might have a special holiday glow in their hearts, too.

Jingle Bells

By Iza Trapani | Holidays

This story begins with the song, “Jingle Bells,” and children on a Christmas sleigh ride. The story quickly moves on to the celebration of Christmas in various cultures around the world. The reader discovers traditions from Mexico, Sweden, the Philippines, Poland, Italy, Kenya and the United States. Although the text is informational, it is also very simplistic and a good way to discuss different Christmas customs.

ON THE RISE

Josiah Benson is becoming a fine actor, but the honor, he believes, is playing the “King of Pop.” BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

H

Helena resident Josiah Benson doesn’t need stage lights to show his talents in musical theater; he can manage that by himself. This year, however, 12-year-old Josiah will have the chance to shine under the bright lights of stages across the country— from Chicago to New York to Los Angeles, and many more cities in between—in his biggest role to date. Josiah landed the part of Little Michael in “MJ the Musical,” a production designed to showcase Michael Jackson’s “unique and unparalleled artistry” as an entertainer, according to the show’s website. Created by Tony Award-winning Director/ Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and twotime Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, the “MJ the Musical” tour will take Josiah and his castmates to Broadway and cities throughout North America over the next year. It’s an opportunity Josiah and his family didn’t even think to have on their radar when Josiah first tried musical theater several years ago. “He initially didn’t want to get into theater,” says Dedrick Benson, Josiah’s dad. Josiah had plenty of

experience singing at church and performing at various events, but applying the combination of singing, dancing and acting in a musical theater production was something he had not done before the summer of 2021. That’s when a young man at the Bensons’ church, Friendship Baptist Church in Homewood, suggested that Josiah audition for the role of Sebastian in “The Little Mermaid JR.” at Birmingham’s Virginia Samford Theatre. “We had to talk him into it at first,” Dedrick says. He and Josiah’s mother, Felicia, told him they didn’t want him to look back someday and regret that he didn’t at least try. They could see his potential, even at just 10 years old. “He is reserved, but once he gets on the stage, he really steps into his role.” Josiah took his parents’ advice and auditioned for the role of Sebastian, landing it for both of the production’s casts. “At first I was nervous,” Josiah recalls. “Once I started to make friends in different shows, I just rolled with it, and it’s been fun ever since.” And roll with it, he did. With his first musical

theater production under his belt, Josiah was hooked. “He just fell in love with theater from there,” Dedrick says. After “The Little Mermaid JR.,” Josiah landed roles in “Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR.,” followed by “Les Misérables” with the Jefferson County Academy of Theatre and Dance. In 2022, Josiah signed with a talent agency and set up an actor profile online. A company in New York saw his profile and contacted him about auditioning for “MJ the Musical.” “It was surreal and overwhelming all at the same time because we didn’t really know what to expect,” Dedrick says. “It was kind of mindblowing.” Similar to his first big audition, Josiah says he was nervous but began to enjoy himself once he met others there for the auditions. “I started making friends and having a good time,” he says. “I didn’t really think I was going to get it, and then I got it and I was super happy.” While rehearsing as Little Michael, Josiah has gained inspiration from castmate Roman Banks, who was cast as MJ, the adult version of Michael Jackson in the production. “It’s ShelbyLiving.com

been really cool to work with the person that’s playing Michael,” Josiah says. “He has all the dance moves and everything.” Another highlight for Josiah so far has been meeting the man who wrote the lyrics to Jackson’s song “Man in the Mirror.” “He heard us sing the song,” Josiah says. “He talked about how soulful we were singing it and the meaning to it.” Josiah went to New York in mid-June to start rehearsing for the tour, which kicked off with the first show in Chicago on Aug. 1. Cincinnati, Ohio, was the next stop, followed by stops in other major cities in more than a dozen states. Josiah attends Helena Middle School, but he will be homeschooled while on tour, Felicia says.

At HMS, Josiah participated in choir and played rec football and basketball. Athleticism seems to run in his family; Josiah’s older twin brothers, Ja’lon and Jeremiah Benson, won the state championship this year in the 4x400m team relay, and they will continue their track careers at the University of Montevallo this fall. In addition, Josiah earned school awards in choir and English and was an A Honor Roll student. He also served as an HMS Peer Helper, a role Dedrick says was special to his son. “He has a heart for people who are less fortunate or can’t fend for themselves,” Dedrick says. “He’s that kid. That’s why he gets blessed with these opportunities.” He still loves sports, but according to his parents, Josiah’s opportunities in musical theater have shown him how much he also enjoys acting and singing. Although Josiah can be reserved, his parents vouch for his ability to connect with an audience as soon as he starts to perform, a skill Felicia says he developed in church, singing and speaking publicly at events. “He was kind of conditioned to be in the front at an early age,” she says. “Once he gets on stage, he transforms. He steps into his element.” The positive effects of Josiah’s talent have been felt by his family, too. “Some kids that he was auditioning with, that were cast for different roles, we also made friends with their parents,” Dedrick says. “They can guide us and give us insight on certain things that we weren’t familiar with. It’s been a blessing for us.” For more information about “MJ the Musical” and to view the full tour schedule, visit tour.mjthemusical.com.

Miss Shelby County 2024 PHOTO BY LIZ GRANDY WITH EDG PHOTOGRAPHY

On Saturday, July 8, Ella Kate Nichols of Andalusia, Alabama, was named Miss Shelby County 2024 at the Shelby County Arts Council. Ella Kate, 20, is a junior at Auburn University and is majoring in human development and family science with a minor in music business. She is a member of the Auburn University Singers, the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Student Recruiters, the Auburn University Dance Marathon, the Auburn University Gospel Choir, the College of Human Sciences Student Ambassadors and the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. WAFFLES ON WHEELS The origins of Southern Coffee and Waffles–a breakfast business on the rise. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY UNTOLD IMAGERY ShelbyLiving.com

T

The beauty of passion is that once one finds it, he is floored with the possibilities that present themselves–and all he needs is a little bit of faith to pursue them. Enter stage right, Shane and Breann Angelovich. Shane, a native of Boulder, Colorado, and Breann, of Hoover, Alabama, met in their mid 20s and say it was love at first sight. They’ve now been married for 15 years and have four children with ages ranging from 10 to 2 years old. Having both been raised among wonderful cooks, it isn’t surprising that either of them went into the food industry. The couple actually formulated the idea for their mobile breakfast truck, Southern Coffee and Waffles, after Shane oversaw operations at a coffee shop in the Riverchase Galleria before the business closed in 2022. And, like everything else in the world at that time, the Covid-19 pandemic affected a lot of business owners, forcing people to close up shop. Shane says he really liked running the coffee shop and wanted

to continue the business but without the strings attached. While he wanted to stay in the coffee business, Shane says he had a dream of going mobile– putting his business on the move where he could serve customers all over and not be limited to the hours and regulations of a brick-and-mortar location. After spending a few hours scouring Facebook Marketplace, Shane came across a vintage, 1964 mobile scout, which he promptly bought and drove hundreds of miles to and from Texas to pick up and bring back home. He rewired the entire truck, putting in waffle irons and espresso machines. As for why Shane and Breann chose to serve coffee and waffles, they say their signature “Liege waffle” is not only one of the most popular waffles in Europe, but it is also not one that is commonly served around town–and they aim to change that one breakfast meal at a time. “Our customer base has shown a need for a savory

menu,” Breann says. Shane and Breann established their base at a commissary kitchen in Helena, where they make all of their menu’s items from scratch. They now take their traveling “waffles on wheels” business all over the greater Birmingham area, serving at farmers markets, pop-up events, weddings and more. According to chicagowaffles.com, the Belgian waffle made its world debut in 1958 in Brussels, Belgium, of which it is named. It was introduced to the United States in 1962 at a show by a Belgian man named Walter Cleyman. Before 1962, few Americans were familiar with the “whipped cream and strawberries on a waffle” concept. The Belgian waffle started gaining popularity quickly after it was showcased at the New York World’s Fair. Pretty soon, every kitchen–both domestic and commercial– were stocking up on waffle irons as the new “Belgian waffle” quickly became the go-to on every breakfast menu from the East 42 November/December 2023

to the West Coast. However, the Belgian waffle is only one of the two most popular waffles–these two of which both originated out of Belgium. The sweeter sister of the two, the Liege waffle, has origins only really known in legend. According to sweetaddiesstaunton.com, “The Liege waffle was invented when the Prince-Bishop of Liegè, a city in the Belgian region of Wallonia, asked his cook to create a pastry made with lots of sugar.” Liege waffles are a type of Belgian waffles that are sweeter because of the pearl sugar imbued in the dough used to create them. The dough is much thicker than normal waffle batter, too. While the yeasted batter contributes to the outer, flaky texture and softer insides, the sugar pearls make the waffles taste sweeter unlike any other. Breann says the waffles they serve don’t need any syrup ShelbyLiving.com

because they are already sweet enough. However, the menu at Southern Coffee and Waffles does not just serve plain waffles. It has a variety of inventive options that Breann says her family has conjured up over time. Some of her and Shane’s favorites include the grilled cheese waffle, which according to southerncoffeeandwaffles. com is “a unique experience of melty goodness pressed inside our made to order Liege waffle with a touch of homemade garlic herb butter.” “The bacon jalapeño waffle is something different,” Breann says. “We hand crumble all of the bacon and add

the candied jalapeños. It’s something [most people] haven’t ever had before.” For those with a sweet tooth, Breann recommends the seasonal peaches and cream waffle, which is a Liege waffle base topped with whipped peach compote and caramel. “My grandmother would make these amazing peach crepes,” Breann says. “When we introduced the peaches and cream waffle for summer, that was influenced by her.” Kids, she says, often order the Nutella and sprinkles waffle or the s’mores waffle, which is topped with speculoos cookie butter, toasted marshmallows and chocolate sauce. No matter what is on the menu, Breann says there is something for everyone, and the menu, well, that’s all thanks to the Angelovich family who have all helped contribute to the wide array of waffle possibilities. Running their business is a family affair, Breann says, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Why? Because being in business with her family has been her and Shane’s sweetest treat of all. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Joe Hutto

General Manager and Operating Partner of VJ’s Restaurant PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

A veteran of the food industry since 2008, Joe Hutto has been cooking in a professional setting for the last 15 years and loves every bit of his job. He joined the team at VJ’s Restaurant in 2014 and was promoted to general manager in 2016. Here, he offers insight on this family-owned and operated burger joint and why food simply tastes better when cooked with care. What inspired the menu at VJ’s Restaurant? When I came on board, VJ’s Restaurant served basic bar and grill food items, such as hamburgers, wings and pizza. After joining the cook staff, I added new things to the menu to help the restaurant diversify its food options. Some of the additions include the “mac attack,” which is an openfaced hamburger topped with Swiss cheese, bacon, macaroni and cheese, queso and bacon bits. The “gravy mountain,” too, is popular. It has steak Philly meat between two slices of Swiss cheese on top of a hamburger patty and resting on Texas toast. It comes smothered in grilled onions and topped with brown gravy. The pizza quesadilla, a crowd favorite, has hamburger meat with marinara sauce, ham, bacon, pepperoni and mozzarella cheese, which is all layered together in a crispy tortilla.

onions and brown gravy on an eight-inch hoagies roll. Our wings are by far our best sellers, and for newcomers, the cheeseburgers and hamburger steaks always hit home. Kids always enjoy the grilled cheese, which is served on two slices of Texas toast. For picky eaters, we always recommend loading up on sides. Most everyone enjoys the fries, onion rings, mac and cheese or tater tots.

What makes the food at VJ’s Restaurant a token of the business? We have had a lot of success by making our food unique, and we never stop trying to create new items. We offer specialty items every season and always tailor our menu options to our customers’ desires. By putting our customers’ needs first, we find that business is better—our people are happier. My mentality is that food tastes better when the people preparing it take the time to make the meals with precision Which menu item is your favorite, and and attention to detail. which do customers like the most? My personal favorite item is the Gdaddy How do you think customer service sub sandwich, which is a Philly steak makes a meal taste better? Customer service has everything to do sandwich with meat, Swiss cheese, grilled with your food. The atmosphere you’re in 48 November/December 2023

can make you enjoy a meal more because when you feel good, the food you eat coincidentally tastes better, too. People enjoy sharing meals together, and the reason why is fellowship. When we serve our customers, we keep this attitude in mind and try to serve each person with a smile and have them leave feeling both full and fulfilled, too. What do you take pride in most when it comes to working at VJ’s Restaurant? We take the most pride in the way we try to give back to our community and make it a little better each day. By fostering a community of fellowship, we tend to see our customers come back again and again. People need community because community strengthens our relationships with one another. We’re proud at VJ’s Restaurant to have such a community, and we have all of our wonderful customers, staff and more to thank for this. VJ’s Restaurant is located at 2266 County Road 46. It is open Sunday-Thursday from 4-9 p.m. and on Friday-Saturday from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. Customers can visit facebook. com/vjsrestaurantatthelake for a full menu.

Southlake Jody’s estate rests on 2.1 acres, which allow the home to feel spacious yet secluded, thanks to the abundance of nature within his neighborhood. 50 November/December 2023

There’s no place like home than in Southlake. This beautifully-designed community features numerous acres of woodland forestry, a private lake and nearly 450 properties that families call home. Jody Jones, who moved into his Southlake home in December 2021, says he’d lived all over Hoover, and Southlake has been his favorite place to live. His estate is nestled in 2.1 nature-filled acres near the community’s lakeside. “When we landed upon this house, we were impressed by the quality of construction and its ability to be here for many years to come,” Jody says. The traditional yet timeless house is now 37 years old but is artfully preserved. Walking through the French doors, one first notices the grand staircase, connecting the first and second floors and how high the 27-foot ceilings stretch. Strolling through the home, every room has been thoughtfully preserved with a mix of French Contemporary and modern furniture– all of a neutral color palette. “It’s open, it’s airy, it’s oversized–it has every amenity you can think of,” Jody says. Jody says that a great deal of renovation did go into this home in some areas such as the exterior landscaping. Jody expanded the greenery outdoors, ripping up old shrubbery and including garden beds. He also added a covered outdoor patio for his guests. This house is perfect for entertaining his large family, he adds. Interestingly, what sold him on this house was not the grandeur of the home’s exterior, nor the spacious beauty within, either. What he loved most was the room this house would provide for his family, and family, he says, really makes any house feel like home.

Ady’s BIG Army is empowering adults with special needs by magnifying still, small voices to radicalize change.

Brian and Chrissy Schubert say the trajectory of their lives’ purpose changed for the better when they adopted the lens their daughter, Ady Schubert, uses to perceive her own journey. Following a career opportunity, Brian and Chrissy moved their family to Birmingham in 2011. Several months earlier in July 2011, then 18-monthold Ady began regressing developmentally, losing several milestones she had accomplished. She quit responding to her name, became anxiety-ridden and frequently had inconsolable outbursts. At age 2, Ady was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. Chrissy says learning of Ady’s diagnosis felt to them like mourning the death of their child. “There would be an absence in her eyes some days, where I could be staring right at her, and she wouldn’t even look up,” Chrissy says. By age 3, Ady developed serious anxiety and began hurting and biting herself. Over the next three years, Brian and Chrissy struggled to cope with helping Ady live a full life, while also managing their business and raising their other two children, Bailey and Camden.

Chrissy recalls Ady’s growing irritation with fabrics and her refusing to wear clothes and shoes. Nearly every morning, Chrissy says she would end up wrapping Ady in a blanket, taking her to school and with the help of three or four other therapists, holding her down while at school to get her dressed. Brian and Chrissy also struggled to afford all of the expenses Ady needed as they traveled across the country, meeting with every school and specialist willing to help. In 2013, several of Brian and Chrissy’s friends created a fundraiser with a goal of $7,000 to help pay for Ady’s needs, and miraculously, the fundraiser yielded just shy of $30,000. Chrissy says she and Brian felt overwhelmed–this time, however, with hope. “We wanted to take all the things that we struggled with or hoped for and use those things to help other families tangibly,” Chrissy says. This ushered in a unique season for Chrissy as she began “diving into prayer” like never before. Chrissy says she began having dreams that God was about to do something really amazing in Ady. Later on, Chrissy involved Ady in a new,

kinesthetic therapy aimed at helping nonverbal children communicate effectively. For the first time in eight years, Ady began communicating. She would point to block letters, spelling small words, then simple sentences. After communicating with Ady clearly for the first time, Chrissy says she was so consumed with emotion and crying happy tears. Chrissy recalls that Ady attempted to comfort her, spelling, “Mom, I’m okay.” Chrissy says she began mourning again, but this time, she says she mourned the fact that she mourned her hopes and dreams for her daughter. “I underestimated her like she didn’t understand me,” Chrissy says. “I deprived this child for almost eight years of that honor she deserved because all I could see was the self-injury and lack of clothes.” Ady continued to progress in her new spelling therapy, even creating a poem titled, “I’m Autistic and Free.” She also began spelling out conversations, detailing all of the things she had experienced and how she viewed the world. “We started to understand and grasp what this child in her sensory nightmare was enduring,” Chrissy says. “While [her world] is beautiful, it’s also very overwhelming.” One of the most impactful moments with Ady, Chrissy says, was when she learned Ady’s definition of love. Ady began spelling out letters and in them, talked a lot about needing “more love.” Chrissy says Ady would write over and over, “Mom, can you love me more?” Chrissy couldn’t fathom how Ady didn’t feel loved.

Chrissy hugged, kissed and consoled her daughter everyday. Finally, Chrissy says she asked Ady to write down three things she needed to feel loved. Ady spelled out that she needed Chrissy to teach her, to read to her and to talk to her as if she was listening. Ady, in her way, explained that she often felt invisible. People walk by and observe, but they don’t speak to her–they speak about her. Ady would spell in her letters her vision for “a place for people like her.” Chrissy says during this communication, she promised Ady that she would always talk to her like she’s listening–even if Ady couldn’t make eye contact with her. She also promised never to put her in an environment that underestimated her skill set. “She’s just simply amazing, and we attribute that to honoring her and speaking to her like a normal human being,” Chrissy says. This realization led both Brian and Chrissy on a hunt to find a community that would meet Ady’s definition of love, and after numerous years of searching, they were almost ready to give up. It wasn’t until they toured The Brookwood Community, “BIG,” which is based in Georgetown, Texas, that their hope was restored. BIG is a Christian, vocational community that provides a safe haven for adults with special needs to learn and practice skillsbased trades, while also helping them feel loved and respected in an environment where they, too, can make a positive difference in the world. “It was like a breath of heaven just knocked us over,” Chrissy says

of BIG. “There was something different about this place. It was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced.” Those with special needs at BIG are called “citizens,” which allows them to feel more dignified than solely being referred to by their functional disabilities. The citizens come to work every day and create pieces of art and baked goods, tend the garden on the grounds and more. “I would walk by, and they would show me the things they were creating,” Chrissy says. “Even cooler was the staff and citizen interaction. It was so different from anything I had seen. It was so honorable. It was friendship-based instead of [codependent].” The most impressive theme of BIG, Chrissy recalls, was how the nonprofit was changing the way the world views adults with special needs. “We knew we couldn’t just create this for Ady,” Chrissy says. “This was needed for all of our adults [with special needs].” Brian and Chrissy met with the founder of BIG and began drawing up plans to create a vocational program for teens and adults with special needs in Birmingham. Using BIG’s model, Brian and Chrissy created Ady’s BIG Army, named for their daughter and her desire to create a community where people like her feel accepted. Ady’s BIG Army was launched on Feb. 14, 2023. Because Ady always talked about love in her communication, Brian and Chrissy felt that Valentine’s Day was the best day to launch their nonprofit. Since its inception, Ady’s BIG Army has grown to include 12 citizens with a goal of adding a new citizen every month. The nonprofit does not yet have its own brick-and-mortar location but

meets in Lakeside Baptist Church, Monday-Thursday. Every day, Ady’s BIG Army’s citizens come to work and begin their day in devotion and worship. They then split into teams, rotating workstations and creating products to sell to fundraise for a place Ady’s BIG Army can call “home.” The citizens make fudge, dog treats, soap, spa products, jewelry and even charcuterie boards, too. Not only are they learning wonderful skills, but they are also getting paid a small paycheck for their labor, too. “We have noticed since we launched Ady’s BIG Army, by giving our citizens love, honor and the purpose that they need, citizens that were never able to make it through a program before, make it through our program,” Chrissy says. Looking forward, Chrissy says that she and Brian are looking to purchase 3-5 acres to expand the nonprofit’s facets and create a permanent home for the organization. Ady’s BIG Army will also host its first gala in February 2024 to auction off several of the citizens’ paintings to fundraise for their new dream. The most rewarding aspect of creating Ady’s BIG Army, Chrissy says, is seeing her daughter delight in her work, happy to be around people and feel as though she, too, is important in her community. Both Brian and Chrissy say they will continue to foster such fellowship through Ady’s BIG Army and hope these dreams become reality for many more citizens for years to come. HIT THE ROAD

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY IN NAPA By Christiana Roussel | Photos by Visit Napa Valley & Contributed

Whether you’ve been to Napa a dozen times or this Northern California destination is just now rising to the top of your travel bucket list, proper planning will ensure you’re able to experience the most of this singular hot spot.

HIT THE ROAD

BACKGROUND Napa Valley is one of those rare and wondrous regions where the climate, soil and topography—often referred to as ‘terroir’— meld to foster the ideal environment for growing outstanding grapes. These grapes are then painstakingly and lovingly converted into wine, making this some of the most covetable farmland in the country. At its core, Napa Valley is a farming community. Agriculturally, Napa Valley was classified as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1981, as California’s first AVA. This designation establishes defined growing areas which reflect regional-specific terroir. Within the Napa Valley AVA, there are 16 distinct—or ‘nested’—AVAs with names you’ll surely recognize: Stags Leap, Atlas Peak, Rutherford and St. Helena. Relaxed, convivial, teeming with pride and eager to share the bounty of their home, locals welcome visitors year-round to experience their life’s work. 70 November/December 2023

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO With such a wealth of things to do and see, sip and taste, planning a trip to Napa can feel a little overwhelming. You want to do it all! Enlisting the help of a dedicated and experienced travel advisor ensures you spend less time in the car and more time immersed in Napa culture. Birmingham resident Anne Tilson Varner founded Portiera Travel as a way to share her love of the region. “I’ve spent the past two decades traveling to Napa, and in that time, I have gotten to know and become friends with so many wonderful people,” Anne says. “Locals are the greatest asset in planning Portiera excursions, and I am grateful for these cultivated relationships.” Her office boasts bookshelves of binders created for friends and clients, each with well-timed itineraries and lists of not-to-bemissed hotspots. Anne says three or four days in Napa is a great place to begin your journey. portieratravel.com

HIT THE ROAD

HIT THE ROAD The length of Napa Valley runs roughly 30 miles, from downtown Napa to Calistoga on the North end; in between, you’ll find the towns of St. Helena and Yountville. Each town definitely has its own vibe and feel. In downtown Napa, trace your way along the Napa River to The Oxbow Public Market, which shows off the best of this agricultural region and is a must-do. Pop into Gott’s Roadside for an epic burger before you hit your afternoon wineries. Yountville is as picture-postcardperfect as you can imagine (and home to Thomas Keller’s Michelin-starred The French Laundry restaurant), while St. Helena is a shopper’s dream (La Bohème and Christopher Hill Gallery are two favorites).

and burrata on toast. Make sure you find the hidden entrance to the downstairs pub for a clubby vibe. Serious culinary enthusiasts will want to pop in to the Culinary Institute of America for a tour and a nosh. If spas are your thing, then head straight to geothermal hot springs-centric Calistoga, where founder Samuel Brannan modeled the entire town on the hot springs of Saratoga, New York. The mud and mineral springs here are known to have a therapeutic effect like no other. Earn that massage with a bike ride to Old Faithful Geyser of California.

Still not sure where to begin in planning your trip? We asked Anne to put together a sample itinerary for readers, with notable places to If you’re feeling peckish, plan a stop at Goose stay, wineries to visit and her favorite & Gander for some chicharrones or mushroom restaurants:

South Napa

Resort: Stanly Ranch, an Auberge Resort Property (Budget Alternative: Andaz Napa) Tasting: Hudson Ranch (amazing Chardonnays; beautiful property) Lunch: Farm at Carneros Resort Tasting: Darioush Winery (interesting architecture and history) Dinner: Scala Osteria

Mid Napa Valley

Hotel: Poetry Inn, a luxurious B&B perched above Silverado Trail. (Budget Alternative: The Estate Yountville) Tasting: David Arthur Vineyards (high above Pritchard Hill with spectacular views) Lunch: Brix Restaurant in the Garden

72 November/December 2023

Tasting: Staglin Family Vineyards (philanthropic family and where the 1998 version of “The Parent Trap” was filmed) Dinner: RH Restaurant Yountville (Alternative: if you want a casual dinner, head towards Ciccio, newly reopened)

North Napa - St. Helena / Calistoga

Resort: Meadowood Napa Valley (Budget Alternative: The Bungalows at Calistoga eclectic, warm fun) Tasting: Heritage School Vineyards (interesting history and amazing property) Lunch: Sam’s Social Club Tasting: Schramsberg (founded 1862, famous for bubbles and more)

Dinner: Brasswood Bar & Kitchen (look around for some of the local vintner rock stars who are known to haunt this place) Anne is quick to note that while many of the larger wineries accept walk-ins for tastings, the smaller boutique wineries request or require reservations. “Often times, guests are meeting the vintner themselves, touring their family’s vineyard, with a private tour of the operations,” Anne says. “These are intimate experiences, best planned well in advance.”

NAPA FOR THE NON-DRINKERS You don’t have to be an oenophile or imbibe daily to enjoy Napa Valley—there are plenty of activities here that don’t require stemmed glassware. •

BIKING—Napa Valley Vine Trail—this 12.5-mile trail that runs from South Napa to Yountville will eventually become a 47-mile walking and biking trail system. Rent ebikes from Napa Valley eBikes.

HOT AIR BALLOON RIDES—Combine your bike adventure with a hot air balloon ride at Napa Valley Bike Tours, or book an escape with Napa Valley Aloft.

MUSEUMS & PERFORMING ARTS—Wine isn’t the only culture here. The di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art merits a visit, while viewing the sculptures of Napa and Yountville beckon in the afternoon. The notable Rail Arts District (RAD) features two miles of interactive public art, easily viewed on foot or by bicycle.

KAYAK or SUP on the Napa River

HIKING—There are more than two dozen trails in the Napa Valley area alone—pick up a local guide or plan your route in advance using the Trail finder feature of visitnapavalley.com. You can sort your stroll by level of difficulty, length or vista, and if you happen to time your stay with the full moon, join up with the folks at Napa Valley Land Trust for their scheduled nighttime hike.

SPA DAY—There are more than a dozen spas in the area, many of which offer the signature Calistoga mud bath treatment that will have you channeling your inner zen in no time.

NAPA COMES TO BIRMINGHAM TUMTUM TREE FOUNDATION

As America’s longest-running wine auction supporting children’s charities, TumTum Tree Foundation has attracted Napa Valley winemaker luminaries to Birmingham for more than 30 years. What began in Frank and Pardis Stitt’s beloved Bottega dining room has grown into something altogether life-changing. From that first year where $25,000 was raised for Magic Moments, TumTum Tree Foundation has grown, now boasting more than $16 million in donations, positively impacting the lives of children engaged in services provided by The Red Barn, Mitchell’s Place, Camp Smile-a-Mile, UAB Arts in Medicine and several others. The 34th Annual Grand Tasting and Live Auction Dinner will take place on Friday, Nov. 3. tumtumtreefoundation.org

MY SHELBY COUNTY DR. LEE GOLDENBERG

Owner of Greystone Chiropractic & Element Wellness Center

Finding My Sound

We are Wolves I am an avid musician, and I play acoustic guitar in a two-person band called, “We are Wolves.” The band performs live at local Birmingham venues, breweries, restaurants, wineries and clubs.

Sentimental Spots

Making Memories While my boys are young, we love taking an hour to go to a trampoline park like Defy or Altitude and afterwards, picking up an organic juice at Clean Juice in Tattersall or having dinner at Helena Steak House. Those places are dear to me because my kids love going there, and we have great bonding time together.

Fellowship in Community

Celebrate Hoover Day & Buck Creek Festival Typically, I love Celebrate Hoover Day because it is a wonderful event celebrating our city, schools and talented residents of Hoover. I also love local festivals that involve live music, such as Helena’s Buck Creek Festival.

Being in Business in Shelby County

Greystone Chiropractic & Element Wellness Center The best part of running my practice is the close relationships we make with our patients. We strive to help people implement healthy choices into their lifestyles.

Get Outdoors

Black Creek Mountain My favorite place to go is Black Creek Mountain, a hidden gem in Hoover just past the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. I love it because it is very close to my home in Blackridge, and there are many short trails to discover. When I only have an hour or two to spare, this is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and get out in nature–in between all the demands of work and family.
