Dawn Harrison, Photographer Dawn Harrison is a freelance photographer out of Birmingham. She grew up and put down roots off of 280, where she lives with her wonderful husband, five kids, one son-in-law, two grandkids, three dogs, two cats, eight cows and two ducks. When she isn’t taking pictures, you can find her burning up 280 getting to various school and sporting events, or hanging out in carpool lines. She feels extremely blessed to be a part of the publication and to continue to meet such inspiring members of our community.

Kevin McKee, Photographer Kevin lives in Columbiana, where he and his family enjoy being active in their community. Most days he is in his office performing the duties of a medical practice administrator, but he can also be found running around with cameras slung around his neck. Kevin has been asked to photograph in a dynamic array of situations including theater performances, rock concerts, bull riding, aerial photography piloting both drones and airplanes, and has even found himself perched in the rigging of the tall ship H.M.S. Rose.

Jeremy Raines, Photographer Jeremy Raines is a freelance photographer residing in Helena. Jeremy lived in the Wiregrass region his entire life before moving to Shelby County in December 2017. He resides with his fiance Madison and their spoiled Maltipoo puppy, Zoey. Jeremy primarily freelances as a photographer with Shelby Living, but he also spends a lot of time freelancing as a photographer and writer for the Shelby County Reporter. Jeremy works full-time as a multi-program coordinator for the Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging.

Grace Thornton, Writer Grace Thornton is a freelance writer who calls Birmingham home. She’s served as a writer and editor for a number of Alabama publications and has spent a few years living in Europe and the Middle East as a writer for a nonprofit organization. She’s also written two books — I Don’t Wait Anymore and Unshakable Pursuit.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Stop the Noise “A confused mind does nothing.” “Less is more.” “When life isn’t adding up, start subtracting.” All great advice for when you feel too much is coming at you from every direction; yet, where do you begin to quiet the chaos? Inboxes that never get emptied, telemarketers calling from your own area code, and mail that should get tossed immediately, yet somehow lingers on the counter, can compound the “white noise” that’s cluttering our digital and material lives. Let’s look at six places that you’re receiving information and focus on how to lessen what’s coming at you. uMail. When sorting mail, it’s simple to pull out the magazines and bills, yet you’re still left with letters for life insurance, credit card offers and organizations requesting Owner of SimpleWorks, donations. Directmail.com is the Simpleworks.guru place to register your address to stop lisa@simpleworks.guru the mailings you no longer wish to 205.981.7733 receive. Your new best friend. uPhone 1. The FCC has issued a statement on its website, “It is unlawful for any person to make any call using any automatic telephone dialing system or any artificial or prerecorded voice message to wireless numbers.” Yet somehow we’re still getting calls and they’re coming from our own area codes making it look like a local call. The National Do No Call registry gives you the opportunity to stop unwanted telemarketing calls. Go to donotcall.gov or call 888.382.1222. uPhone 2. Our phones aren’t just for making calls, they’re also our computers. Delete old contacts and unused apps. This can be done in those pockets of time when sitting in carpool or while waiting at the doctor. Clean up pictures. My daughter does this every night with the pictures she took or saved that day by deleting or putting them in folders. uEmail. Your inbox is open 24/7/365. Email is still the No. 1 tool for business communication, yet it is sharing space with newsletters, sales and recipes. Unroll.me is the source to unsubscribe to lists you want to be removed from. uSocial Media. Unfriend, unfollow. Streamline who and what you’re allowing in your brain. uTV. Are 150 channels even needed? Streamline your options. Cancel packages you aren’t using/watching. Fewer options mean fewer decisions—which frees up brain space. There are some things in life we can’t control like the weather and calorie count on menus. Focus on what you can control. It’s that simple.

Journey of Hope Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center (Forge) and The Deep South Cancer Foundation (DSCF) recently hosted “A Journey of Courage and Hope,” the first retreat for metastatic breast cancer survivors in the region. It was an opportunity for women and the women who support them to retreat from the routines of treatment and daily life to experience a program of individual and mutual healing and renewal. During the letter writing session, each survivor/co-survivor pair wrote positive things that came out of their relationship that most likely would not have if they had not received a cancer diagnosis. Nancy, a caregiver, wrote, “My dear companion Sharon, I am deeply grateful to be traveling this road with you along with huge realities that present themselves. All of life and living and all of death and dying.” The free retreat was held at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in Cullman. SPEAKING WITHOUT WORDS

For dancers at one local studio, dancing is an outlet for creative expression and healing. BY GRACE THORNTON PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

G

Gracie Driskell doesn’t remember a time when Dream Makers Dance wasn’t a part of her life. The 17-yearold senior at Shelby County High School has been dancing there since she was 3. She loves clogging, hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary — the list goes on and on. But longer than that is the list of ways she says the studio has changed her life. “The teachers there have made a major impact on me,” she says, noting that two of the teachers have

20 November/December 2018

been like “a second mom” to her. One of those is Jenny Lespi, who started the studio in 1992 after she was asked to get together some dancers for Liberty Day in Columbiana. The idea just snowballed from there, and Dream Makers Dance was born. “Shelby County opened up an afterschool education program in 1994 with dance for latchkey kids, kids who couldn’t afford to go to one of the bigger studios,”

and at Children’s of Alabama, we want to see every child grow up and live to their fullest potential.

Lespi says, noting that the program gave the opportunity for students in a rural, Title One area to thrive. “And God has just blessed us — we’ve grown and grown and grown.” Dream Makers Dance doesn’t have a studio of its own — they rent gym space from schools. And they don’t have mirrors or barres, but that doesn’t slow them down, Lespi says. “They all have stories from their heart,” she says.

That’s why we recruit, train and retain the most inquiring minds, the most skilled hands and the most compassionate hearts in pediatric medicine. 1 6 0 0 7 T H AV E N U E S O U T H B I R M I N G H A M , A L 3 5 2 3 3 (205) 638-9100

“Not having a mirror there doesn’t change their passion. You can stretch your leg on the back of a chair as well as you can stretch it on a barre.” Driskell agrees. “We don’t look like a normal studio, and I think it’s neat that we can do just as well as other studios with all the extravagant things,” she says. “Sometimes we even compete against them and win.” Dream Makers Dance was named Most Inspirational Dance Studio at the Inspire National Dance Competition. They also won the People’s Choice award at nationals and $3,500 in scholarships. “Our mission is to inspire, and I think our girls do a good job of that,” Lespi says. “We’re there as dancers, but we have grown more into telling a story than being concerned about doing the steps.

Every performance is somebody’s story.” And they definitely have stories to tell. Two years ago, Driskell choreographed a solo piece to Rascal Flatts’ “Why,” a song about losing someone to suicide. She first put the piece together just to let people who were struggling know they weren’t alone, but in the middle of that year, one of her friends — an eighth grader — committed suicide. “After that happened, it had an even deeper meaning behind it,” Driskell says. As every girl comes up with a dance they’d like to do, Lespi sits down with them and talks with them through the story they want to tell and the impact they want to make on the audience. It’s a studio of girls that have faced a lot of pain — loss of mothers, grandmothers, teachers and friends. They’ve known broken families and

bullying. “These are big things that could’ve destroyed these little girls, and they are taking that and expressing it through dance,” Lespi says. “They want to help other people. Every girl who walks through the door of our class has passion. And every girl, even though she’s from a one-trafficlight town, she has impacted lives all over the place.” Lespi understands tragedy too and how dance can be a release. Her son passed away in recent years. And her best friend, who also taught at the studio for 17 years, lost her battle with cancer a few years ago too. The pain is deep. And when words won’t do the trick — which is often, Lespi says — she can express herself through dance.

Dream Makers Dance creator Jenny Lespi says every performance her students do is “somebody’s story.”

24 November/December 2018

“It’s a place where you can speak without words,” she says. And being a part of the studio sisterhood has made all the difference in her life, too. The bond between the dancers is one she can’t explain. “We’re not just a studio — we’re a family,” Lespi says. Ava Varco, a student at Elvin Hill Elementary School, agrees. “I’m 10, and I’ve been taking dance there since I was 2. I feel like I’ve known these girls forever,” she says. “We’re a close-knit group, like a big ol’ family. They’re like my sisters. And we get to express ourselves through these dances.” Driskell agreed — they were sisters with a purpose, a mission. “We want to tell a story through what we do. And it helps us, but we want it to help other people too.”

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

KEEPING IT SASSY

The Sassy Brown Band is returning to the Shelby County Arts Council stage. BY LINDSAY DYESS PHOTO BY CAROL NEAL, PINK DOOR PHOTOS Some people come into this world ready to share their special gifts and talents. Lauren “Sassy” Brown is one of these people. “My mom would tell you I came into this world singing,” she says. “I’ve always been drawn to and had a love for music of all genres.” This Alabama native has had a flair for performance ever since she was a young girl putting on living room “variety shows” for her parents’ friends. “I would say my father was probably my greatest influence in developing my love for music,” she recalls. She would spend hours listening to his record collection of artists such as Jim Reeves, Bill Anderson, Loretta Lynn, Jimi Hendrix and Patsy Cline. Sassy was particularly drawn to the blues genre and has since spent her life honing her musical craft. “The blues make me happy,” she says. “The blues aren’t about sadness. Blues is about happiness and sadness-love, lust, passion, anger, heartache … that’s life, baby, and that makes me happy.” In 2012 she formed The Sassy Brown Band featuring Glen Butts, Andrew Brasfield, Scott Housey and John Oliver. They have performed their foot-tapping beats all over the Southeast and even opened for acts such as Eric Clapton, Mike Zito and Sam Frazier. The Sassy Brown Band has earned a bit of notoriety as the 2016 and 2017 winners of the Muscle Shoals Music Preservation Society Blues Challenge. They even placed as quarter finalists in the 2017 and 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, out of more than 200 competing bands from all over the world. On Nov. 11, Sassy brings her special talents to the stage of the Shelby County Arts Council’s Black Box Theater performing the music of Patsy Cline. This

performance will also feature the Sassy Brown Band live. “Patsy Cline is one of my greatest influences in music, period,” she says. “Her voice, her raw emotion, her effortless grace and delivery— the way she connected with people through her music. She’s everything I strive to be.” Sassy will pay tribute to the great Patsy Cline on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and tickets are $20. Shelby County Arts Council events continue with “Come Fly with Me” featuring Austin Foster and pianist Nathan Dawkins on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. Whether driving down the road to spend Thanksgiving dinner together, flying to a distant destination for an annual Christmas ritual, developing holiday traditions in your own home or spending time with friends, family is the focus of the holiday season. Avid reader, book club member and overall book enthusiast Elisabeth Welty shares five books about family to curl up with during your own family gatherings.

Ava’s Man

By Rick Bragg Rick Bragg explores the colorful life of the grandfather he never knew in this larger-than-life story of a working class southern family man. Pieced together from tall tales told at family gatherings and by friends and neighbors who knew them best, Ava’s Man celebrates the life of hardworking and hard scrabble men and families in Northeastern Alabama. Rick will keep you laughing with a colorful cast of characters who will make you appreciate your own family roots.

The Great Santini

By Pat Conroy In this book, Pat Conroy goes for the jugular by exploring the often violent, dysfunctional and complex relationships that can be contained in families. The story of Bull Meecham, a marine fighter pilot and his son Ben highlights the sometimes explosive relationships between fathers and sons and how even the darkest of family dynamics can bring about light. You will be drawn into the story as you see how exposing the truth brings about redemption for this family.

The Light Between Oceans

By M.L. Stedman The rich and beautiful descriptions set this heart-wrenching novel apart. As a couple living isolated while keeping a light house, the Sherbourne family is faced with loss after loss until one day a seemingly orphaned infant girl washes up on shore. This riveting plot and sweeping novel will keep you on your toes as it explores the lengths that mothers will go to for their children. It will leave you wondering about the interaction between family, love and what is right.

The Truth According to Us

By Annie Barrows Set in the fictional mill town of Macedonia, West Virginia, this witty and delightful novel tells the story of the fallen-from-grace Romeyn family and their triumphs and follies. With an engaging 12-year-old narrator who is reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird’s young Scout, this book has a cast of resilient women who demonstrate familial love and mercy as they untangle and then rewrite family history in a way that heals heartbreak and betrayal.

The House of the Spirits

By Isabel Allende This imaginative and absorbing saga follows three generations of the Trueba family through political upheaval and sweeping social changes in South America. You will be enthralled as you follow this magical and luminous family into the complex relationships between a family and a nation— relationships that demonstrate the ways that love and fate play a role in the revolutions, both triumphant and tragic that face us all.

One student’s interest in motorcycles has taken the CTEC’s Auto Tech program to the next level. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY KEVIN MCKEE ShelbyLiving.com

Before September, the only engine sounds coming from Robert Irwin’s Automotive Technology shop at the Career Technical Education Center were from cars. A conversation between Irwin and a representative from Harley-Davidson Motor Company at the national SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, Kentucky, this summer changed that. One of Irwin’s students, Michael Moler, had decided to compete in the SkillsUSA motorcycle category. As a senior at Vincent High School, Moler won first place in

the state competition in Motorcycle Service Technology. Then, he competed at the national level and placed 13th overall. Irwin was amazed, considering Moler didn’t even have a motorcycle to work on in his Auto Tech class. “He’s one of those sharp kids,” Irwin says. “For him to place 13th in the nation is astronomical.” Moler, who works at Ernest McCarty Ford in Alabaster, says he applied knowledge he had from tinkering with different vehicles over the years, along with mechanical techniques he’d learned in Irwin’s class.

We treat you like family and each patient like our own pet. “When I was younger, I worked on ATVs and dirt bikes, but I had never really worked on many motorcycles,” Moler says. “It was a pretty cool experience for anyone that got the chance to go.” As well as Moler performed without access to motorcycles in the Auto Tech class, Irwin wanted to provide more inclass opportunities for him and other students to learn specific skills associated with motorcycle maintenance. He expressed this to Harley-Davidson representative Marcus Steele at the national competition in June, not thinking the

conversation would lead to a solution so quickly. But within four months, Steele had helped arrange for the company to donate two motorcycles, a 2014 Dyna Street Bob and a 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout, to Irwin’s program. Irwin estimates the value of the two Michael Moler motorcycles is roughly $40,000. “That’s a big deal to donate that stuff to a high school,” Irwin says, “And to get new stuff like this is incredible.” After the motorcycles arrived at the CTEC in early September, Irwin and his students got them running again, and started making plans for customization of the bikes with assistance from students in the Collision Repair Technology program. Next, he wants to get a motorcycle lift so students can take the bikes apart and put them back together. “Any students that have any interest in motorcycles or smaller engines could learn on those,” Moler says. Even when the novelty of the pair of Harleys has

worn off a bit, Irwin says he wants to continue the focused instruction he’s started for students like Moler who express a high level of interest in working on motorcycles. He credits Moler’s initiative with laying the foundation for this new chapter in his Automotive Technology program. “We’re going to utilize these (motorcycles) to compete at the state level,” he says. “This is something I hope we can do every year. It builds students’ confidence, too.” Irwin’s program is an Automotive Service Excellence Accredited Training Program, meaning his students are able to earn ASE certification before they graduate. His class is full every year. Last year alone, 15 of Irwin’s students landed jobs in the workforce. With this new opportunity for students to build their skills in motorcycle repair, that number could increase. “This is going to be fun,” Irwin says. “I’m pumped up.”

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Ryan Adams

Chelsea High School History Teacher PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Walter (Ryan) Adams is a teacher, coach and published author, and he’s adding Peace Teacher to the list. As a 14-year classroom veteran, Ryan has taught a wide range of social science courses in Alabama and Louisiana. He currently teaches AP U.S. History 10 and 11 at Chelsea High School, and serves as the pitching coach for the baseball program and is the faculty sponsor for First Priority, FCA and Chelsea’s Project Citizen. In 2011, he published To Be The King of Diamonds, a book in which he tells his life story. Ryan and his wife, Melanie, live in Chelsea with their four children: Sadie, Lee (Tug), Jesse and Joanna. What led up to your being selected to participate in the USIP 2018 Peace Teachers Program? For the last four years, Chelsea has participated in a Civic workshop program in Washington D.C. through the Close-Up Foundation. Our Regional Close-Up Rep. contacted me about the USIP program and said, “This seems like you.” After looking it over, I decided to complete the application process and submit my name to be part of the 2018 Peace Teacher Cohort. In July, I received my notification that I had been selected as one of the four teachers from around the country. What can you tell us about the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Peace Teachers Program? A great deal about the USIP and the Peace Teacher Program, I am learning as I go. Without hesitation, I can say, the more I am learning, the more honored I feel to be a part. The USIP is a non-partisan government agency that formatted during the Carter Administration and established under President Reagan. The main focus has not been the avoidance of international conflict, but addressing that conflict does 32 November/December 2018

not have to result in loss of life. The Peace Teacher Program is now in its fifth year of existence and is based on the conviction that educators can be pivotal in bringing these pressing issues into the classroom. At a time when violent conflict regularly dominates headlines, teachers are the key to helping young people obtain the knowledge and skills to not only envision a more peaceful world, but play a role in creating it. As a program participant, what are your goals for this school year? I invoked a challenge to my students on the first day of classes that I wish to guide my actions as their teacher and theirs, as students. I first asked them that if given only two choices, would they rather “do right” or “be right.” When looking at whatever conflict or decision that may arise, I want to reflect back to that question. I want to choose to “do right.” If I maintain that mindset, then our possibilities become more apparent. What are a few things you plan to implement in your classes at CHHS? Each of the students participated in

taking a Conflict Style Assessment that gauges your general approach to conflict. We are tracking the results for ourselves and seeing the most common approach of each of my classes. I have taken the assessment twice thus far and found it interesting that there were slight discrepancies in my results. I want to see how both individual and group mentality manifests over the year. Further, I want to introduce as many perspectives as possible into the curriculum. What do you hope your students will gain from your involvement in the program? The world is changing. Fifteen years ago, cell phones were not allowed in schools. Today, they can be used to enhance lesson plans. Technology and communication has bridged a gap that centuries of humans never could. The 21st century has increased our connectivity. No longer are countries isolated. The advent of interconnection ensures that we share a collective destiny with both our allies and enemies. The most important aspect of us is not our ability to do, but our ability to do “with others.”

Helena’s Jimmy Brogden was simply a hungry man in search of a late-night snack when he concocted his first batch of homemade salsa several years ago. He didn’t use what he calls “frou-frou” ingredients to make it— just freshfrom-the-garden peppers and produce, with a dash of his own chopping and mixing skills. He thought the salsa turned out well, but when he took it to a company lunch and numerous people raved about it, he realized he had something special enough to sell. With heaping helpings of support from family, friends and acquaintances fortunate to have sampled his salsa, Jimmy launched After Midnight Salsa Co. He left his corporate job to focus his full attention on the new business. “Four years ago, I started selling salsa full-time. I figured if it doesn’t work, I could always get a job with

flavor without so much punch. Jimmy uses locally sourced ingredients and accepts occasional “donations” from friends like Jacob Reiche, who recently gave him fresh peppers plucked straight from his garden in North Carolina. Peppers of varying sizes and in vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow and green fill bags in the commercial kitchen Jimmy leases to make his salsa. Jimmy dunks all ingredients in an organic wash designed to clean the surface of produce naturally. His salsa contains no preservatives, he says. “We do everything fresh,” he adds. “People like knowing where their food comes from. We weigh everything to the ounce to make sure we can repeat everything that’s done.” The After Midnight Salsa Co. label was inspired by the view from Jimmy’s house in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. A clock in the center, to the left of a crescent moon is set to 1:11 a.m. “My business is personal,” he says. “This is my grown man’s lemonade stand, pretty much.” To see updates or send Jimmy Brogden a message, follow After Midnight Salsa Co. on Facebook.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Kathleen Baldus has curated an extensive collection of Christmas decorations to display every winter. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

Kathleen Baldus is an expert at surrounding herself with reminders of the Christmas season. In December each year, every room of her Highland Lakes home becomes a gallery for her countless decorations—trees and garlands bedecked with metallic ornaments and ribbons, miniature glittery reindeer, wooden nutcrackers, ornate table settings, Santa Claus figurines and miscellaneous ceramic pieces. “I go all out,” Kathleen says. “It’s my favorite time of year.” Her passion for decorating so much of her 9,000-squarefoot home for the holidays—each room becoming a Christmas vignette all its own—drew attention from the organizers of the annual Highland Lakes Women’s Club Holiday Home Tour, a fundraiser for local charities. When

42 November/December 2018

she was asked to open her home to the tour in 2016, she said yes without hesitation. “We had a fabulous turnout,” she says of her first year. She participated in the tour again in 2017. Collecting new pieces and arranging them around the house is part of what she loves about interior decorating in general. She’s not shy with color (several of her guest bedrooms have distinct color “themes”), and she describes her overall style as “eclectic” with antique pieces and trinkets her late husband brought home from his travels abroad years ago. “I love to mix colors and pieces. I love to mix all kinds of things,” she says. “I just love decorating.”

TURNING WOOD FOR GOOD

MEMBERS OF THE ALABAMA WOODWORKERS GUILD FOCUS THEIR PROJECTS ON COMMUNITY SERVICE. BY CARMEN BROWN | PHOTOS BY JEREMY RAINES

50 November/December 2018

Four years ago, Don Wilson was looking for a change in direction. He had retired from his career as a sales executive for Johnson & Johnson and he wanted to spend his future serving the community. That’s when his friend John Wilkes encouraged him to join him in the toy group as a member of the Alabama Woodworkers Guild. “I didn’t know anything about woodmaking. I never thought that was something I would do,” Wilson says. “But I was looking to do something in community service, and I had friends with kids I wanted to make toys for.” The Alabama Woodworkers Guild makes 11,000-15,000 toys a year, with around 5,000 going to Children’s of Alabama therapy and

rehab projects. “These are children who need help with dexterity,” he says. “We make airplanes and helicopters with moving parts that they can use to help get their mobility back.” The AWG also supplies toys to 22 Shriners hospitals worldwide, along with SafeHouse, a shelter for abused women and children. Established in 1983, the AWG, now located at its Woodworking Education Center at 10544 Highway 17 in Maylene, has become a powerhouse for the state as a one-stop shop not only to take woodworking classes, but also for promoting the art of woodworking through community service, arts and crafts shows at venues such as Hoover ShelbyLiving.com

Public Library and North Shelby Library, and through fellowship with other members. Wilson, who is now president of the guild, is working on enhancing and spreading knowledge about the organization’s mission. “We have three strengths. We have a skilled class, we have our own woodshop, and we teach,” he says. Just last year, Wilson says, the AWG taught 15 classes at the center, an unused schoolhouse building leased by Habitat for humanity in 2008. Aside from the popular toy making class, the AWG teaches everything from guitar making, making hand tools and woodturning. Classes are open to all guild members in good standing.

“We taught 50 people how to turn wood this past year,” he says. “They learn to make everything from bowls to jewelry boxes. We also teach cabinet making, which is always a big hit.” Fees vary according to the course, but Wilson says instructors do not take money for teaching. “We’re a nonprofit, so the money goes directly to our revenue stream,” he says. “It’s one thing to be skilled, but to be able to go out and teach all of this to other people is amazing.” The AWG has been known for helping make period pieces for plays at the American Village, where they repaired a replica of George Washington’s cane, as well as making

furniture for Greater Birmingham Ministries. Wilson says all of the wood is donated by Habitat for Humanity. “We have a great relationship with Habitat for Humanity,” Wilson says. “We owe them a lot, especially Charles Moore, who is the president. I can’t thank them enough.” The AWG now has around 300 members, with an increasing number of women members, and has grown to be the third largest in the country, Wilson says. “We continue to upgrade. We’re looking at using 3D printing. We’re also looking at how we can establish more satellite groups in Alabama, but right now we’re basically it.” Membership is $100 per year. More information on the AWG and class offerings can be found at https:// wp.awwg.info. The AWG’s annual show, featuring members’ finished projects like furniture, musical instruments, wood carvings and toys were presented at the Hoover Public Library Oct. 7-14. Wilson says it is a great opportunity for people who are interested in the craft to come and learn what the AWG has to offer. “They can take anybody who was like me and didn’t know anything about woodworking, but I had a servant’s heart, and that’s all it requires,” he says.

HEALTH FOCUS OF THE MONTH:

Healthcare help brought to you by Bright Health. Presenting Sponsor

2019 Open Enrollment Period: November 1, 2018 – Saturday, December 15, 2018 Premium Tax Credits: When applying for coverage in the marketplace, you’ll find out if you qualify for a “premium tax credit” that lowers your premium — the amount you pay monthly to your insurance plan. The amount of your premium tax credit depends on the estimated household income for 2018

that you put on your application. You can apply some or all of this tax credit to your premium payments. Cost-sharing Reductions: If you qualify for savings on

out-of-pocket costs and enroll in Silver plan: You’ll have a lower deductible. This means the insurance plan starts paying its share of your medical costs

sooner. You’ll have lower copayments or coinsurance. These are the payments you make each time you get care, like for a doctor visit. You’ll have a lower “out-ofpocket maximum.” This means the total amount you’d have to pay in a year if you used a lot of care, like if you had an accident, will be lower. For more help, contact one of our local Bright Health Benefits Consultant: Tim Merritt (678) 920-9677.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY girls my age in my community that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise met; perform, which is something that is near and dear to my heart; and better myself through the entire process. As Shelby County’s newest DYW representative, what events are on your schedule this year? So far, I will be participating in the Columbiana and Chelsea parades and plan to speak to the students at Rocky Ridge Elementary about being your best self, which is the foundation of the Distinguished Young Women program. From Jan. 11-17, I will be in Montgomery practicing and preparing for the state competition on Jan. 18-19 with other representatives from all of Alabama. Shelby County Distinguished the counties in Young Woman What advice would you give other young women interested in participating in the PHOTO CONTRIBUTED DYW program? Go in with an open mind and be ready to have fun. It is unlike anything else you will Sara Grace, 17, is a busy senior ever experience. The competition week is full of practicing and making new at Spain Park High School. She’s friends, which is truly something each and involved in National Honor Society, every girl in the program enjoyed. No Ambassadors, Senior Class Officers, matter the outcome, every girl thoroughly Peer Helping, French Club, SPHS enjoyed participating in the program and Honor Council, Rho Kappa Social receiving scholarships that they can use Studies Honor Society, Mu Alpha toward their college education. Considering Theta Math Honor Society and French that 25 percent of the participant’s score Honor Society. She credits her family comes from a combination of – parents Kim and Andy Estill and the participant’s GPA and ACT score, being sister Sydney – with shaping her into mindful of your grades this academic year is who she is: a motivated student, a very important. I would also competitive dancer and an active recommend becoming knowledgeable member of her church and community. on local and national news stories, as 25 percent of the score is based on an interview Why did you decide to participate in with judges. Participants also get to DYW? perform a talent of their choosing. Last year, I overheard a few senior girls talking about Distinguished Young What other awards have you received? Women. Curiously, I asked one of them if Over the years, I have received many they could explain what it was, and by the awards; however, there are three in end of the conversation, I knew it was particular that have really been special for something that I wanted to pursue. I knew me. The first, which I received last year, was it was the program for me because by the Finley Award. It was so humbling to participating, I was able to interact with receive this award because it meant that I

had made a positive impact on people by just being myself. The second award that is so important to me is the Doug Caldwell Passion for Dance award that is given to one dancer at the Jump Dance Regional convention. This award is based on your commitment and love for dance and how it radiates from within you. I was chosen out of 1,000-plus dancers, which was also so humbling. The last award that I am most proud of is Student of the Month, which I have received almost every year since sixth grade. This always brings me great joy because it is chosen by teachers and given to students who not only show excellence in the classroom, but also demonstrate outstanding character. What are your plans after high school? After high school, I plan to attend the University of Alabama, where I will double major in mathematics and dance. I hope to work as a professional dancer with a cruise line after college doing two of the things that I love: dancing and traveling. Once my dance career ends (or when my body gets too tired), I plan to become a high school math teacher in hopes of teaching algebra. Who are your role models, and why? My biggest role model has to be my tenth grade Algebra 2 teacher, Mr. Sandlin. He is one of the most unique people I have ever met, and he teaches math in a way that everyone understands, which is usually impossible. He always keeps the class entertained by making math fun, even if it means embarrassing himself in the process. What’s something interesting people might not know about you? Although I dance and seem like a girly girl, I grew up loving the outdoors. My dad and I love to go hiking, mountain biking and canoeing when I have an off weekend. My favorite spot to hike is the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. We like to hike, climb a huge rock called “Shining Rock” and admire the views from the top, and then stargaze when we get back to camp at night.
