If your new business opened, or your new home closed on time, you may have Kim Ray to thank.

Our Builder Services representative helps keep you on track. There are countless details that go into ensuring a new home closes on time, or a business is able to open. But, for SouthWest Water Company customers, construction can’t begin until Kim Ray, in our Builder Services department, has done her job. She is here to make sure builders have the support they need to establish sewer service for a new home or business. “I’m always trying to make sure I get things out on time, because I know the builder is waiting on it. A builder cannot start construction until our job is done,” Kim said. “We believe in providing excellent service. It’s not just a slogan with us. So, for example, when you call our main line during business hours, you will get a human—not an endless automated menu.”

Coordinating installations, arranging inspections, and documenting every new customer’s configuration can be a challenge. Thankfully, Kim is highly organized. And she’s always mindful that her efforts can make the difference in whether a family can move into a new home on time. Every day, Kim is working hard behind the scenes to make life a little bit easier for our customers. And we’re thankful for that. To learn more, visit CleanerCahaba.info.

The new building will be adjacent and attached to Morgan Hall and Comer Hall, where the College of Business is currently housed.

“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” While holiday music has been playing before the leaves changed from green to gold to gone, Christmas shopping has shifted dramatically over the last few years. Most gift lists of the past had a similar outline: Picture frames for new moms, tools for the guys, candles for your BFF, and PJs and sweaters tagged for Grandma. The gifting trend today is centered on giving people an experience that showcases all that life has to offer through doing things, not dusting things. Our homes are overflowing with stuff, which has people opting out of accumulating more and seeking experiences instead. According to the Harris Group, 74 percent prefer to spend more money on experiences than on material things. Here are some Owner of SimpleWorks, Simpleworks.guru experiences versus things to try: lisa@simpleworks.guru uPile on. How many checkmarks 205.981.7733 can you acquire with one experience? Instead of meeting a friend after work for a drink, you can now book a 14-passenger bike tour that provides fun, exercise and camaraderie as you explore more than one brewery and bar throughout downtown. Check out Birmingham Pedal Tours. uAccess over ownership. Who needs to own a car when you have the Lyft and Uber apps? There’s even an alternative to owning or leasing. Birmingham’s Dream Garage subscription lets you flip between cars as your needs change. “Drive SUVs for family trips, fun sports cars for date nights and luxury sedans for the daily commute.” Unlimited “flips” included, so who needs the beater car in the driveway anymore? uEnjoyment and entertainment. Remember the days when you bought your Christmas tree (that someone else picked and cut down) at the hardware store? Now we’re willing to a pay premium price to go to the farm to pick them ourselves. Neely Farms in Thorsby offers “an experience that will create memories for you and your family. Visit the gift shop, sit by the fire and enjoy hot chocolate and spiced tea.” Even a trip to Target includes stopping first to pick up a venti latte, then browsing with Chip and Joanna before heading over to electronics to look at the options on upgrading your doorbell to a video camera. Studies have found that spending money on experiences brings more lasting joy than spending money on things—this explains the explosion of the “experience economy.” Check out what Airbnb has to offer this holiday season. You might find a wine tasting tour in Vermont that would be perfect for Grandma. A bottle of rosé is better than pink PJs any day. It’s that simple.

THE MEMORY KEEPER

Columbiana resident Linda Cook has become the vessel of her town’s rich history. BY SASHA JOHNS PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY AND CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

When Linda Cook arrived in Columbiana 32 years ago with her husband and two kids, she moved her small business to town, too. Little did she know that her presence in the heart of downtown would span more than three decades and eventually make her the unofficial memory keeper of Main Street. Before the Cooks moved to Columbiana in 1987, Linda’s husband Richard recognized that she needed a new challenge and some room to grow beyond the daily demands of motherhood. He encouraged her to purchase an established business that was ready to sell in town. That business became Busy Hands Needlework and Framing. In the early days, her inventory reflected a rise in the popularity of cross-stitch and other kinds of needlework. Upon her arrival, she rented the space the Morrison and Spann Law offices now occupy on the corner of College and Main streets. As time went by, the trends changed and the needlework became less popular. She eventually rolled the stitching patterns out and replaced that inventory on her sales floor with an assortment of gifts and home décor, allowing her to put a stronger focus on meeting the framing needs of her customers. The small historic and artistic town lent itself to a wide variety of framing jobs that went beyond the needlework she sold. Not only was she framing family memories, but she was asked to frame unusual antiques and work done by local artists. Each job came with a unique back story. “I’ve framed everything from snapshots of times gone by on Main Street to human hair,” she says. As the framing side of her business grew, her need for a new space did as well, taking her across the main intersection of town to a portion of the building historically known as the Columbiana Leader Department Store, where she met Sonya Leftkovits, her new landlady. Norman, Sonya’s husband, and his family had done business in Columbiana since the early 1900s. Their department store had been a staple on Main Street for decades until it closed its doors in 1980. It wasn’t long before this landlord-tenant relationship between Sonya and Linda led to a rare, surprisingly close friendship over the next decade. Sonya, in many respects, was the original memory keeper of Main Street. Having been a constant figure

in Columbiana for a generation, she knew more history about the town than just about anyone on Main Street at the time. She became a dear confidante and mentor to her tenant, Linda, often guiding her in day-to-day changes in her store. “She was very observant and could predict business trends in town before they came to fruition,” Linda says of Sonya, emotion brimming in her voice. “It usually paid to listen to her advice. She was always very in tune to Columbiana and wanted the best for this town.” Together they weathered change and growth and decline and more change on Main Street—and in their personal lives. Norman passed away after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, and the two women became closer as Sonya navigated widowhood. Sonya had always been the go-to person for questions about things in town. For instance, when UPS first began delivering to town, the drivers always sought out Sonya if they couldn’t find their destination. When someone had a question about businesses that had come and gone in town, Sonya usually had the answer they were looking for. When Sonya died, the job naturally fell to Linda. These days, Linda often pays homage to her old friend by keeping a well-dressed mannequin – just about the size of the tiny Mrs. Leftkovits – near the front door to greet her patrons. It makes her smile to have Sonya represented in her shop. “I feel like she’s always here,” Linda says. But Linda’s life began to change again nearly seven years ago when, after emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen and severe stomach ulcers, Richard began to show signs of early-onset

dementia. “He was never really the same after that,” Linda says. “I really miss having him around the shop. You really don’t realize how much you can miss a person who is still around, till something like this comes along.” As it became clear Richard needed to spend more time at home, Linda taught herself to construct the frames that her husband had always built for her business. She mostly runs the shop by herself with occasional help from her four grandchildren during busier times, plus a small army of friends and family help with Richard. She recently made one last move into a smaller, more manageable location next door in the Shops of Columbiana. She’s in a new space but still holds the honor of being the second oldest business on Main Street. Thirty-three years in the heart of town has given her a vast mental compendium of local stories and remembrances of the county seat. An afternoon stroll on Main shouldn’t go without a stop into her store for a quick chat … or, maybe, a not-so-quick chat. If Linda can tell you anything, it’s how precious such conversations – shared moments of life encapsulated in spoken words – are in a world often dominated by social media posts in lieu of face-to-face interactions. And it’s these conversations that feed into the local history that’s not necessarily best preserved on the pages of books printed and placed on a shelf. Sometimes, the best place to store memories is with someone who wholly appreciates their worth and makes their preservation a priority. For Columbiana, that person is Linda Cook.

A banner bearing the words “Welcome 2 the Working Wildcats Clothing Closet” hangs above racks of clothes and shoes in a small room in Shelby County High School. A binder rests on a shelf until a student picks it up to log another donation—a pair of pants, a dress shirt, a jacket, a prom dress, a pair of shoes. Garments are organized by type and size, and are hung neatly under labels. The room, essentially a large walk-

The credit goes to a group of students, their teacher and others who have supported the group’s efforts to transform an out-of-use restroom into a place that fosters both altruism and entrepreneurship. The Clothing Closet is the culmination of nearly eight years of work by special education teacher Soli Lilly, her students in the Working Wildcats

program and other school staff to meet a physical need for students. They were collecting donated clothes and shoes long before they had a designated space to display them for students who needed something. Over time, however, the need for somewhere to properly hang up and store the clothes other than one side of an already full classroom became more pressing. Lilly had an idea. She thought if the group could enlist outside help to work on the old restroom, which had been a makeshift storage space most recently, they could turn it into a closet for their non-profit clothes operation. Alabama Power stepped up to the task, partnering with the Working Wildcats to revamp the room and install the hardware necessary for hanging clothes. “They took the project on, and it came to life,” Lilly says. “It takes a village; it’s not just me. It’s neat to see a vision come to life after all these years.” In the Clothing Closet, students can find an outfit for a job interview, a change of clothes to meet the school dress code or formal wear for prom—to borrow or to keep, depending on their needs. The operation also allows students with special needs who are in the Working Wildcats program to gain valuable skills they can implement at home and at their jobs before and after graduation. Even small tasks related to the closet can help students hone skills. For example, they are responsible for retrieving the key to the closet from designated SCHS staff members and unlocking and locking the closet before and after use; processing and sorting clothing and shoe donations the program receives; keeping the clothes and shoes in the closet organized and catalogued as students borrow or take items; laundering borrowed clothes before

they are returned to the closet; and manning the closet during use. One of the best parts of the Clothing Closet is students working it don’t even have to leave campus for their shifts. “Everybody needs retail experience, and everybody needs life skills,” Lilly says. “Our ultimate goal is for them to become productive members of society and be employable. We wanted to build independence and help others.” In October, Lilly and her students participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony and gave community members a tour of the closet and the program’s other classrooms, one of which houses the washer and dryer the students use to launder the clothes that go into the closet. Senior Matthew Wright was greeting and leading visitors from the front of the school to the closet, and senior Seth Kober was telling visitors how completing tasks such as folding and hanging up clothes has helped him prepare for future jobs. He has served as manager for the SCHS basketball team since his sophomore year, and hopes to hold a similar role wherever he attends college. “It helps me a lot,” he says of working in the Clothing Closet. He has even been on the other side of the operation; he borrowed a

shirt one day after a spill left his own shirt unwearable. The Working Wildcats are in immediate need of hangers, including pant, tubular, velvet and wooden hangers for different types and sizes of garments. Ongoing donations the Clothing Closet accepts include the following: T-shirts, blue jeans, socks, undershirts, tennis shoes, business attire, prom dresses, dress pants, dress socks, dress shirts (white), dress shoes (black), accessories, athletic wear, winter coats, new packaged undergarments, laundry soap or pods and hygiene products. All items are needed for male and female students. Donations can be dropped off at the SCHS office. The program also incorporates items from the school’s unclaimed lost and found in the closet. “Something you think is trash is somebody else’s treasure,” Lilly says. “We thoroughly enjoy what we get to do. We’re here to serve and to serve others. We hope this Clothing Closet stays here forever. It’s amazing.” For more information about the Working Wildcats Clothing Closet, email mlilly@shelbyed. org.

What’s so special about craft beer? Local breweries are happy to pour you a glass and explain. BY BILL PLOTT PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY AND DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com

I

In 2006 there were 1,409 breweries operating in the United States. Now, more than a decade later, there are more than 7,300—and three of the newest ones are in Shelby County. Interstellar Ginger Beer and Exploration Co., Siluria Brewing Co. and Oversoul Brewing Co. are part of a national “explosion” in craft beer, which is made by small, independent traditional brewers, according to the national Brewers Association. Call it mom-and-pop beer, if you wish, in contrast to the product of big corporations like Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors. Craft beers are brewed in smaller batches, primarily for local distribution, and are often more experimental in styles and flavors. Here is a look at the local breweries, in order of debut. INTERSTELLAR GINGER BEER AND EXPLORATION CO. It was college student “poverty” that put UAB microbiologist Dr. Shane Kelly on the path to cofounding Interstellar. “I started homebrewing in 2005 when I moved to Birmingham. I was in grad school and kind of broke, so I decided I needed to brew my own beer,” he recalls. “The first thing I brewed was a mead because that’s my grandfather’s name although it isn’t spelled the same.” The problem with honey-based mead, the favorite of the Vikings, is it took about 12 months for proper aging, so Kelly turned regular beer. Then, he started experimenting with ginger. Unlike traditional beer, which is composed of water, yeast, grain and hops, ginger beer eschews two of those ingredients. Instead of hops and grain, it turns to pure cane sugar and, of course, ginger. “My initial plan was to start a yeast factory, but I found I needed a 100-gallon tank for that,” he says. Back to beer— And more work with ginger. Enter Daniel Sims. “My business is real estate research. I’ve known Shane a long time, knew he had a solid background in science. We had a real estate meeting, and, as we talked, I decided that what he really needed was a partner. From there we moved to the facility in Alabaster,” Sims says. “I had a little money,” says Kelly, “and Daniel put up

the seed capital. He never drank before, but he liked my ginger beer so much that he wanted to invest in it.” “I’ve tried a few other things, but the only thing I really like is our ginger beer,” says Sims. There are others who share Sims’ preference for Interstellar’s product. “We’ve got quite a bit of fans,” Kelly says. “They say that we have the beer that doesn’t taste like beer. We’ve definitely got some regulars.” “We’re proud of that (a unique product), but it’s a double-edged sword,” Sims says. “On the one hand people are interested in it because it’s unique and different. Others are scared of that. They’re used to that traditional beer flavor, and we’re giving ‘em something out of the box.” Interstellar is the only local brewery with a current off-premise presence. They invested in a bottling machine and hand labeler, and their beers

are beginning to show up on the shelves of retail outlets. SILURIA BREWING CO. If there is a military flavor at Siluria Brewing Co., it comes naturally. Co-owner and brewer Danny Sample is an active duty colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He has been coordinator of the Birmingham Veterans Day Parade for the past five years. It was his travels as an Army officer that led him into craft beer. “We kind of discovered craft beer together in our travels,” says his wife, co-owner and career dental hygienist Tammy Sample. “She bought me a homebrew kit, and the rest is history,” he says. “She helps me select the style, how we want to do them. It is a team effort. She’s involved all the way so at beer festivals she can talk

about it as well as I can.” “We kid around that this is the Blue Zone where I work,” Danny says, pointing to the corner that holds the brewhouse and fermenters. “She has everything else. She is the management partner in the business. She handles the taproom, the events. This is Tammy’s vision, the décor, the set-up.” Siluria Brewing opened in November 2018 in the completely renovated old Siluria Post Office building. Danny says the appeal of craft beer was not only the unique flavors of the beer, but also the

38 November/December 2019

way it was produced. “I was impressed that most of it was community based rather than large corporation based,” he says. “We wanted to do something that was community based. You know the word ‘pub’ comes from public house, a place where people gathered to get news and information.” Embracing the trend of most craft breweries today, Siluria is pet and family friendly—again, that sense of community. “He can make good beer, and I can create environment,” Tammy says. “I

wanted a place for families. It makes me feel so good when I see families in there playing board games together.” How has the reception to a brewery been in Alabaster? “It’s been so much better than I anticipated,” Tammy says. “Some people were concerned that we were opening a honky-tonk or something. But we have (charity) fundraisers twice a month, and they come in and say, ‘Oh, this is not what I expected.’” Other community events have included book signings by local author Eugene Rowley, regular live music and food truck visits. The Corporal Rivers Memorial VFW Post 12185 opened in April 2019. It was the first new post in Alabama since 1996. The post and the auxiliary both meet at the brewery. Siluria opened with four different beer styles: Boxcar Blonde, Lady Grace Wheat, Quarry IPA and Buck Creek Stout. Several other styles, including pale ale and sour, have joined the lineup. “We are mostly about simple, traditional styles. We try not to get too far out on a limb with fruity stuff,” Danny says. “The Boxcar Blonde and Lady Grace Wheat are two of our most popular beers.”

OVERSOUL BREWING Brothers Jason and Scott Pruitt said the quaint Old Town section of Helena “screamed craft beer” at them. So, Jason says, they sought to give the town “a neighborhood spot, something unique and local, a place to hang out with friends.” “I just got a vibe that a brewery would do awesome here,” Jason says. So far the town seems to agree. Since they opened in the spring, they have grown a regular clientele of not only craft beer enthusiasts but also a generous sprinkling of kids and dogs. “Everybody has been great,” Jason says. “We have regulars. For some of them, they’re just happy to have craft beer available locally.” The family-and-pet-friendly brewery is near local shops and restaurants, the Helena Amphitheater, the Helena Farmers’ Market and scenic Buck Creek—all of which fits the brewery’s name. “Oversoul is the common link between all living organisms, plant and animal. It’s the spirit that runs through all of us, a universal spirit, I would say,” Jason explains. “It’s the connection I get from beer because it starts out as malt, grains and hops, and that’s all blended and becomes a

product that brings people together.” Some of the people, unfamiliar with craft beer, need help making a selection. “The most asked question is ‘What is your lightest beer?’” Jason says. “Well, what do you mean? Light in color, light in abv?” Scott hopes to add a Mexican lager by next summer. That would be more like what the questioners are used to. Meanwhile, the regular lineup at Oversoul includes Parkside Pale Ale, $2 Pistol Porter, BCB Brown Ale, Lawn Mower Wheat and House IPA. Drawing from the Helena Farmers Market, which operates each Saturday in the park behind the brewery, Oversoul has created a group of beers called the Market Series. Using ingredients from a local farmer, they have brewed peach and watermelon saisons, Big Dill Pale Ale and most recently El Guapo JalapenoCilantro. Like many craft beer producers, the Pruitts trace their interest to homebrewing. “We started in the backyard in 2006. Then we moved into Scott’s garage, then to the basement, back to the garage again and now here,” Jason says. The building has been a telephone switch house for the railroad, a bike shop and other businesses. However, most interesting, it was once the Helena jail. They found twoand-a-half metal cell doors downstairs. The missing piece turned out to be at the local historical museum. They donated their half to the museum. The other two doors form an outside corner of their walk-in cooler. Currently open only on weekends, Oversoul is adding other offerings too. Uncle Beard’s Backyard BBQ will offer food, and local musicians will be booked at least once a week. 40 November/December 2019

LITTLE WHITE HOUSE The Ashworth family’s century-old farmhouse is a restoration story in the making. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY SARAH FINNEGAN ShelbyLiving.com

41

W

When Lauren Ashworth says she and her husband, Brett, are home people, she means it in every sense of the word “home.” “We are homebodies,” she says. “We have no wanderlust.” Lauren and Brett love historic homes, too, so much that she calls them “oldhome addicts.” They find joy in preserving the character of old houses and adding their family to the line of previous owners who have lived inside the same walls. Their love for the antiques of the home market is what drew them to their century-old farmhouse in Columbiana five years ago. They had just looked at another old house in town, on Main Street, when they discovered this farmhouse for sale on a swath of land about three miles from downtown Columbiana. “It took us about three years of looking to find this place,” Lauren says. It took them maybe three minutes to know it was meant to be theirs. “It was it. It’s our lifetime project and is a constant work in progress. We have a 10-year plan to completely renovate our kitchen, living and bathroom spaces, but those projects are years away. By the time we do this, I hope we know exactly what we want.” And for Lauren and Brett, buying the circa 1895 farmhouse was a second chance after tragedy. On April 27, 2011, three months to the day after

42 November/December 2019

they bought and moved into a historic home in downtown Cullman, Lauren’s hometown, an EF4 tornado barreled through the city, leaving behind a path of destruction as wide as it was devastating to residents like the Ashworths. The storm claimed all but the front steps of their home. “It was sad and tragic,” Lauren says. They decided not to rebuild; they couldn’t bring themselves to put a new house on the lot where the old one had stood for so many years. They packed up and moved to a newer home in Hoover. They were comfortable. They were happy. But they couldn’t stop thinking about what old home out there might be awaiting their arrival. They began looking and ended up in Columbiana, where the white farmhouse nestled in the countryside captured their hearts. “We fell in love when we found Columbiana,” Lauren says. The Ashworths named their home and surrounding 12 acres of property Stillwater Farm in honor of the body of water they can see from their back door that, according to Lauren, is the oldest manmade lake in Shelby County. Their multi-phase renovation allows them to do the work themselves and without accruing debt. It also means they don’t have to rush to make choices. Here’s a look at what they have done so far— and what their plans are in the coming years.

Parlor For someone who says her style is “not really farmhouse,” Lauren’s knack for incorporating it is evident, especially in the parlor. This sitting room combines comfort with meaningful heirloom touches, including Brett’s grandmother’s pie safe next to the fireplace and an original window from the property’s old corn crib above the mantle.

43

Kitchen As soon as they bought the house, Lauren insisted they do what she calls a “Band-Aid makeover” in the outdated kitchen. She wants to do more extensive work on it in the future, but for now, she says she’s happy with its cleaner, more open look. Recipes from Lauren’s and Brett’s grandmothers, in their own handwriting, cover the vintage chalkboard on the wall.

44 November/December 2019

Pantry The Ashworths’ pantry is what a farmhouse pantry should be: simple, functional and accessible. Open shelving gives them plenty of storage space, and the brick floor and old door serve as rustic elements.

45

Barn Brett and Lauren built the barn three years ago for Brett’s tools and equipment, and to give them a workspace for their ongoing renovation projects.

46 November/December 2019

Backyard They built a fire pit in the backyard for times when they want to relax with a bit more privacy than in the front yard. They are also building a back deck behind the barn, where they will be able to look out over their property. “We just wanted a spot we could come and chill and not have everybody staring at us,” Lauren says. “The view is one of the things we fell in love with when we came out here.”

Guest Bedroom Across the hall from the parlor is the guest bedroom, an airy space thanks to white and beige bed linens and pillows, and windows that invite in plenty of sunlight. The old door hanging on the wall behind the iron bed was salvaged from the Cullman home the Ashworths lost in the 2011 tornado. The guest bathroom is on the Ashworths’ renovation to-do list.

Dining Room Through an archway from the parlor is the dining room, another space Lauren reworked with a neutral palette to create a look of understated grace.

50 November/December 2019

Foyer The charm that greets visitors as they walk up the front steps of the house continues in the foyer, where original wood floors give way to tall ceilings and a vintage metal chandelier. Although they have just started working on the space, the potential is there in the bones.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

Ben Ndalima

University of Montevallo Student PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

A native Tanzanian, Ben, 25, is a senior transfer at the University of Montevallo and is pursuing a business management degree with a music performance minor. This summer, Ben held music workshops with his partner and professor, AJ, in Tanzania, Africa, as a call to action for artists and musicians who have a scarcity of sufficient tangible and intangible resources. How did you choose to come to the University of Montevallo? I had heard about the University of Montevallo and also had UAB in the back of my mind. Central Alabama Community College has a great program (SSS) that encourages students to tour various universities at the program’s expense. We toured AUM and UAB respectively then finally came to the University of Montevallo. The moment I stepped foot on the Montevallo campus, I knew exactly “where I belonged.” Not only did I have scholarship opportunities, but was also drawn to the size, programs and history of education quality. Business and music were my choices because of my interest and influences in business and passion for music. What past experiences do you feel have helped you in these fields? I believe that business influences were from my upbringing and ambition to flourish economically. My parents used to tell me in Swahili, “Mwanangu, uchukie sana umaskini,” which translates to: “Hate poverty with all your heart my son.” I would hear this echo throughout my childhood and sometimes still do up to date. On the music side, I chose music too because it had and has been a part of who I am for the longest time. From banging on desks in high 110 November/December 2019

school to beatboxing then performing, music subconsciously developed and became a part of Ben. What are your plans after you graduate? I believe that I have a calling to be an advocate to support and represent the Tanzanian music industry and community as a whole. Starting a program to help music artists develop their craft and prosper economically is my plan. It is in the works, but I believe that after I have established a clear plan and with financial support, this end goal would come to fruition. What are a few things you have learned while at UM? I have established a better discipline in general. Things like time, task and social management are very significant. As an international student I’ve also developed flexibility and prompt acclimation to the Montevallo culture. The culture consists of College Night and different sides that determine which “tribe is the vibe,” and knowledge on other activities. On top of that, meeting new people has developed my social skills which have influenced my personality. What is one of your favorite memories from your time in college?

One of my favorite memories at UM is College Night! As a PV representative, I had the opportunity this year to play with the Purple Side orchestra as their drummer/ percussionist. I was learning and seeing the back end of musical/play orchestration, which I had never done or been a part of. In the midst of it all, there was plenty of adrenaline during the competition. What an honor it was for me to bring a foreign ambience to the PV table (all 8,300 miles of it). If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’m not really sure what my priority choice would be, but I’ve heard some great things about Venice, Italy. Some of the roadways have canals and I don’t know about y’all, but I’d love to be in a boat that is literally floating over land. The scenery is also very pleasing to the eye. Who do you admire, and why? I admire the people that I’ve had an impactful reciprocal influence with. My parents and family come to mind as an example when I think of admiration. They are an epitome of role models and people who walk the talk on a daily basis. The Tanzanian community recognizes them for their societal contribution (religious leadership, outreach ministries to the orphans and widows, youth mentorship). It was a blessing to experience all of these qualities firsthand from mom and dad. Lastly, I also view the impacts as mostly positive, but consider the “negatives” as a part of my learning and growing process. What do you love about Montevallo? I appreciate the fact that UM focuses on giving quality education with an intimate learning environment. Teacher-student relationships are phenomenal and a joy to experience especially as an international. Furthermore, I have seen the staff on campus go the extra mile to make sure students experience a great college life.
