I

FROM THE EDITOR

ON THE COVER

It’s incredible sometimes to think about how much happens in a year. I have saved several of my daily planners just to be able to flip through them again and read my scribbles and notes about the people I interviewed, events I covered and other things wedged into my schedule. There are days in those planners so packed with notes and to-do lists that I wonder whether I actually finished everything. There are other days where the box is blank, and I know I must have gotten something done, but whether in a rush or memory lapse I didn’t write anything down. We all know it’s easier to remember a big life event like a birth or a wedding than it is to remember the minutiae that fill our daily lives. But sometimes it’s nice to remember a few of those trivial details that ultimately lead us to the bigger things. One year ago, I started editing Shelby Living. One month ago, our team implemented a redesign of the magazine as we launched three new lifestyles publications in Vestavia Hills, Homewood and Mountain Brook. The new look of Shelby Living and its matching sister publications is the result of many people handling many details, big and small, to present the best possible products to our readers. I don’t think anyone kept a complete log of all the tweaks that were made every time someone sat down to work on something, but rest assured every detail was carefully considered as we worked through the redesign process. These changes have arrived as we enter a new season – a busy season for many of you. Fall is definitely one of the busiest times of the year for the Baker family at Old Baker Farm, which you can read more about in this issue. Each year in late September, the Bakers open their gates to the public for visits to the pumpkin patch, horseback rides, arts and crafts, and melt-in-your-mouth homemade barbecue and kettle corn. Old Baker Farm isn’t just a tourist attraction that opens for the season; it’s actually a working farm on which six generations of Bakers have lived and worked. The Cotton Pickin’ Celebration in the fall and the Christmas tree farm in the winter draw hundreds of people to the 300-acre farm in Harpersville year after year, but the farm never closes for the Baker family. It’s their home, their livelihood and their heritage—and it’s one of the places we’re proud to have in the Shelby County fold.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Small Stuff The definition of procrastination is “putting off what you don’t want to do.” The Latin version describes it as “in favor of tomorrow.” Another search brought up “to delay something that must be done, often because it is unpleasant or boring.” The official Procrastination Equation’s definition is “an exclusively negative phenomenon.” None of this sounds appealing or positive, and because we associate putting things off as a weakness in self-discipline, is it crazy to think we can turn our intentional laziness into a positive, smart work tactic? Can you really get more done when you put off doing some of the important things in your day? You can when you think of your time in a different mindset. uBrain dump: By getting things out of your head and down on paper, Owner of SimpleWorks, you can then assign a time for how Simpleworks.guru long each item will take you to lisa@simpleworks.guru complete. Now, don’t take that 205.981.7733 literally. Just estimate on whether something will take all day, a couple of hours, or five minutes. Make sure you don’t confuse the time involved with the importance of getting something accomplished. uSmall stuff: Our days are jam-packed with things to do and we feel overwhelmed. The outdated “to-do” list has been revamped to rank your priorities; yet, even things that aren’t a priority still need to be done. Call this the “small stuff.” When you keep moving the things up on your priority list, the small things get pushed further down and can soon be forgotten. uPowerful pockets of time: Oftentimes we find ourselves with weird windows of time and we don’t know what to do with it. Sitting in carpool line or waiting for a meeting to begin can be time wasters for some people. While many will use this time to scroll through social media, others will see this as the time set aside for the “small stuff” like writing Grandma’s thank-you note. Instead of doing six things that take five minutes each, thus using up a 30-minute block of time, become aware of when you can do the “small stuff” and save that 30 minutes for something that needs 30 minutes of focused attention. If someone is on the outside looking in, they may think that scrolling through the hundreds of pictures on your phone and deleting the blurry ones while waiting to board a plane is wasteful time management, but you know it’s pretty genius of you and your productive mindset. It’s that simple.

THE GUIDE DOCC

WINSHAPE CAMP The WinShape Camp hosted by Double Oak Community Church offered a summer church experience unique to the area. WinShape, an Atlanta-based camp program, was held at the church at Mt Laurel for the third year during the week of July 17. Established in 1985, WinShape has expanded to about 90 day camp locations and five overnight locations, but Double Oak is the only church in the Birmingham area to host the program. This year’s WinShape Camp at Double Oak was attended by 357 campers. Double Oak Senior Pastor Adam Robinson said the camp helps bring people to the church. Of the campers who registered, there were 102 Double Oak families represented, with the rest coming from other churches. WinShape is intended to “provide a camp experience that would enable campers to sharpen their character, deepen their Christian faith and grow in their relationship with others,” according to Camps.WinShape.org. A team of 28 WinShape staffers arrived at Double Oak for the camp and were supported by a group of 35 church volunteers per day. Campers were split into four groups—Galaxy, Ocean, Safari

and Alpine—based on their age. Each day featured time spent with the group, Bible studies in smaller groups and skill sessions that campers had chosen ahead of time, among other activities. “They keep them busy,” said Sandy Stephenson, Double Oak’s Children’s Minister who helped bring WinShape to the church. Friday, July 21, the final day of the camp, was “Chick-fil-A Friday Family Fun Day,” when parents were invited to join in the festivities and free Chick-fil-A was provided.

GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL John Carroll Catholic High School Senior Nathan Ruppert of Shelby County was selected to attend the 2017 Alabama Governor’s School at Samford University this summer. He was among 89 rising high school seniors from 24 counties and 56 high schools in Alabama, who were individually chosen for the two-week honors program. Nathan and the other selected students were nominated by their school based on academic ability, leadership qualities, creativity and community service. The selection was based on teacher and guidance counselor recommendations and written essays. Along with the other participants, Nathan was assigned two classes based on his preferences and requests. He was able to experience a sports medicine class and the Martian Frontier class. As a part of the sports medicine course, he took trips to places such as The University of Alabama at Birmingham where he toured its athletic training department and its facilities, as well as the Alabama Sports Medicine Institute. He also learned about the different career paths within the realm of orthopedics. For the Martian Frontier class, he gained knowledge about the risks and factors of going to Mars, the 18 ShelbyLiving.com

physics of space flight, and planned his own virtual trip to the planet. He also modeled, 3D printed, and launched rockets. Classes were taught by Samford faculty and other professionals from the community. Some of his outstanding accomplishments at John Carroll and in the community that helped him earn the honor to attend AGS include: First Honors Student, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Junior and Senior Class President and John Carroll Student Ambassador. He is also a committee member for Relay for Life, helps tutor other students, and is a member of the John Carroll Frisbee Club. This year’s AGS participants represented an average ACT score of 29.28 and a grade point average of 4.27. The Alabama Governor’s School is a member of the National Conference of Governor’s Schools. Congratulations to Nathan for this outstanding honor!

ERA OF CHANGE

In her latest novel, Loretta Cobb takes on themes of equality and family during a time of civil transformation. BY ANNE RILEY PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com 19

L

Loretta Cobb’s new novel, How Can I Keep from Singing?, centers around Bonita Byrnes – a girl on the cusp of womanhood during the Civil Rights era in Birmingham. Bonita lives in the city’s working class neighborhoods, and her mother, Ida, runs a boarding house. As Bonita comes of age and her mother makes one poor relationship decision after another, it becomes apparent that this story is layered with significant themes: Racial equality, the personal ramifications of war and the power of unlikely friendships. Cobb, who attended the University of Montevallo and then later earned her master’s degree from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College in Vermont, taught English at Helena Junior High School for seven years and is the founder and director of the Harbert Writing Center at Montevallo. Upon her retirement, she was given the designation of Director Emerita for the writing center – a tangible representation of everything she meant to the school, the community and her students. But Cobb’s love of writing had already bloomed long before the degrees were earned and the honors received. In fact, to

20 ShelbyLiving.com

find the roots of her delight with words, one must rewind all the way to Cobb’s eighth grade year, when a teacher praised her work in front of the class. Since then, in addition to her latest novel, she has authored a collection of short stories titled The Ocean Was Salt. These stories touch on the Civil Rights Movement as well – although they hardly stop there. Cancer, father-son relationships and Southern belles in New York are just a few of the themes explored in the collection. Like most writers, Cobb always has a new story in the works. Currently, she’s writing a novel about a man who’s dealing with a terminal illness when an old flame reappears. When she’s not writing, she’s reading – fiction, nonfiction, whatever tickles her fancy. Lee Smith, whom Cobb describes as “funny, but deep as a river,” is one of her favorite authors and greatest inspirations. “The Last Girls by Lee Smith is a fairly recent novel that deals with how a woman’s life is known through newspaper clippings, what her family tells about her, her journals and poetry never shown to anyone but discovered after she’s gone,” Cobb said. “That notion intrigues me, though the

novel is very funny, too. A group of college friends from a creative writing class go down the Mississippi like Huck Finn, searching for answers.” Cobb’s first published story appeared in a 1999 anthology of Alabama women titled Belles’ Letters, and this year, she was included in the second edition of that anthology – Belles’ Letters 2. She might make writing look easy, but that’s just because Cobb knows what her brain needs to produce a great plot, compelling characters and steady pacing. Sometimes, it takes a certain place, activity or snack to get the creative juices flowing, and Cobb has a few tricks up her sleeve in that department – like yoga and dark chocolate. “I learned, in college, to write propped up in bed with materials all around me,” she said. “I still do that often, or I sit in a chaise in the living room, or work in my studio. But there’s one encouraging memory that sticks out to her in a particularly significant way – a memory that keeps her focused on what really matters. “I used to write travel pieces for The Birmingham News,” she said. “Once, my daughter Meredith told me that at her office someone told her, ‘My mama cried when she read that article about Normandy.’ Yes! That’s who you write for, that unknown woman from Pea Ridge who is moved to tears.” Cobb is the recipient of many awards and recognitions, including the Outstanding Achievement Award from the South Eastern Writing Association, and her literary background is as varied as the

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

ALL THAT JAZZ … AND MORE Alabaster will host talented musicians once again at Jazz in the Park. BY LINDSAY DYESS Jazz in the Park is returning to Alabaster for a second year thanks to a collaboration between the Shelby County Arts Council, the Alabaster Arts Council, the city of Alabaster and local sponsors. This free jazz concert set on the beautiful Alabaster Municipal Complex lawn features music from some of the area’s most talented jazz musicians. Best of all, this concert is free to the public and everyone is welcome. Jazz in the Park is a year-round concert series facilitated by Birmingham’s Magic City Smooth Jazz. This non-profit organization created the Jazz in the Park series with the idea of building communities through jazz. “Since 2008, Magic City Smooth Jazz has presented over 50 concerts, supporting over 250 Alabama jazz artists, impacting over 20,000 adults and children, while presenting music workshops for youth and adults,” according to the website. This year’s headlining acts for Alabaster Jazz in the Park are Pedro Moore and Project Grand Slam. Gospel jazz saxophonist Pedro Moore began playing music when he was just in elementary school. Since then he has gone on to play nationally in bands such as Mose Tanksley and the Spiritual Crusaders of Alabama. Moore has even performed at events such as the NAACP’s 2010 Sweet Tea Rally, the Loving It Fashion Extravaganza and the National Baptist Convention. Project Grand Slam, created by acclaimed bassist and composer Robert Miller, is a jazz-rock fusion band with a twist of classic rock and Latin. They draw inspiration from a variety of musical influences such as The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, Afro-Cuban rhythms and Celtic Folk. These jazz musicians are sure to put on a great performance with their unique sounds. The Shelby County Arts Council is excited to announce the return of Jazz in the Park on Sunday, Oct. 1 on the Alabaster Municipal Complex lawn (1953 Municipal Way, Alabaster). BY MELANIE POOLE PHOTO CONTRIBUTED All veterans, active members of the United States Armed Forces and their families are invited to attend a very special Veterans Day salute at the American Village on Friday, Nov. 10. On behalf of the citizens of Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey will personally thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice. “I would like to encourage all Alabama veterans, active members of the United States Armed Forces, and their families to join me in this special salute,” Ivey says. A service of recognition and thanksgiving for World War II veterans will be held at 10:15 a.m. in the Lucille Ryals Thompson Colonial Chapel at the American Village. At the conclusion of the service at 10:45 a.m., Ivey, veterans and their family members will process to the National Veterans Shrine next door for the 11 a.m. Governor’s Salute to Alabama Veterans. Family-friendly activities will also be available throughout the American Village through 4 p.m. The event is entirely free, but attendees are strongly encouraged to register online at Americanvillage.org, or by calling (205) 665-3535 ext. 1776. “There are everyday heroes who are in our families, churches and communities. They live modest lives, most feel they did nothing extraordinary, and they seek no special recognition for doing their duty. Yet each of them was prepared to give their all,” American Village Founder and CEO Tom Walker says. Every one of these heroes – these veterans – is someone’s child. They came from all walks of life to answer our country’s call. They served in war and peace; their lives, and ours, were forever changed. They became a band of brothers and sisters. They all have stories that must be told. Join us on Nov. 10 as we honor, recognize and thank those men and women in every generation who served and sacrificed so that America could be the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

REACHING THE TOP

After years of waiting, Hilltop Montessori School celebrates the completion of its Phase 3 construction. BY STEPHEN DAWKINS PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY ShelbyLiving.com 27

There was a lesson for students in the story of Hilltop Montessori School’s Phase 3 construction. “You can do anything you want if you set a goal and work hard,” Head of School Michele Wilensky said at a Phase 3 ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Aug. 14, the first day of the new school year. And there will be many more lessons taught because of the $3.5 million, 12,000-square foot facility, which includes a gymnasium/multipurpose space, a teaching kitchen, music studio, science lab, art room and more. “Hilltop has always been a special place, but there was always a hole,” Wilensky said about the school that

opened in 1996, noting as an example that during inclement weather, physical education was held in the school foyer. “Today, I’m so pleased to tell you that hole has been filled.” Students, parents and friends of Hilltop attended the ribbon cutting, where school Founder Cindi Stehr thanked donors and all others who helped make the facility a reality. “This is a dream come true not only for myself but for a lot of people,” Stehr said. Other amenities at the facility will include an apiary, butterfly garden, peace labyrinth, restrooms, locker

rooms and showers. The construction is the latest addition to the school since classroom space was added about six years ago. Two students—Willa Rose Akins and Hopper Akins— told those in attendance why they love their school. Willa Rose said she was nervous the first time she visited but a classmate offered to give her a tour.

“That really is what Hilltop is all about,” said Willa Rose, who was beginning her sixth grade year. “I’ve had a lot of adventures at Hilltop. This is like my second home.” Hopper Akins also said he was unsure when starting his time at the school. “After a few weeks, though, I loved Hilltop,” he said. “I loved my class, and I loved my teacher.”

Jefferson State Culinary Student PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Daphne Jones is not an average college student in multiple ways. Jones, 54, hails from Indiana, where she grew up as the eighth of 11 children, in a family that loved cooking at home. A BREWERY LAUNCHES At Interstellar Ginger Beer and Exploration Company, the beer is going where no beer has gone before. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com 33

G

“Glowing beer is cool.” So says Shane Kelly, co-owner and president of Interstellar Ginger Beer and Exploration Company, a new space-themed brewery that opened in Alabaster last month. Kelly and his business partner, Daniel Sims, have fueled excitement in the area for their glow-in-the-dark brews, made of alcoholic ginger beer, and for the brewery, which is one of Shelby County’s first breweries. Lined with corrugated metal, framed comics and black lights, Interstellar is designed to give people a fun place to relax and enjoy their glowing drinks. The brewery offers seven beers on tap, each marked with custom-made wooden rocket ships. The two glowin-the-dark beers are Blue Nebula Ginger Tonic, which

34 ShelbyLiving.com

glows blue, and Sun Spot, a yellow beverage Kelly likened to Limoncello, a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Other brews include Dark and Spicy, First Contact, Ginger Colada, Martian Mojito and Space Mule. “Ginger beer is light, effervescent, gluten-free and it’s delicious,” Kelly says. “It tastes like ginger ale, but fermented.” By day, Kelly, 34, is a scientist at UAB. By night, he is a master brewer at Interstellar. The idea to open a brewery crystallized when Kelly, who had been home brewing for about 10 years, started experimenting with making beer with ginger instead of hops or barley. “We discovered that not only was ginger beer delicious, but we could do other stuff with it,” Kelly says. Hence, the glow. “I decided that I was going to make

glowing beer, make ginger beer available to everyone who wanted ginger beer. People like our stuff.” Sims, who works in real estate, decided to partner with Kelly, a longtime friend, on the brewery venture after Kelly sought his real estate advice for it. Kelly’s educational background (he has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Elon University and a doctorate in physiology and biophysics from UAB) has helped him work out the logistics of ginger beer production and which natural products to use to make it glow. The pair has crafted several appliances they use in the brewing process, including a ginger grinder. “It’s been a learning experience,” Kelly says, and admits no shortage of sweat has been shed in the process. “I had to figure out how to do things. The process is rough, but once that machine is turned and oiled and rockin’, that will be fun. We ShelbyLiving.com 35

do it for the enjoyment of others.” And what better way to appreciate glow-in-the-dark ginger beer than to take it into a little alcove illuminated only by black lights? This space at Interstellar is called the “Dungeon.” Kelly and Sims brew all of the ginger beer at Interstellar’s 1,500-square-foot facility on Regency Park

Drive. Construction to transform the facility into the spacethemed hangout it is now started in April. Soft opening events were held several months later, and a grand opening event — complete with a rocket launch with Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon — was held Sept. 9. “We’ve definitely tried hard to make it cool,” Kelly says. ShelbyLiving.com 37

Kelly and Sims chose Alabaster to launch their brewery because of the area’s continued growth. The facility itself offers ample parking and room for the operation to expand, if needed. In short, Kelly and Sims are simply aiming for their ginger beer to go where no beer has gone before. “The response from people has been pure excitement,” Kelly says. “It’s really fun.” Interstellar’s hours are Friday, 4 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, 11 a.m. until; and Sunday, noon-10 p.m. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome at the brewery. A non-alcoholic ginger beer called Space Lizard is available for free for children. Interstellar beer also will be available at local businesses, including Champy’s Chicken, Hop City Beer and Delta Blues Hot Tamales. CASA DE CUEVAS

Kirk and Alicia Cuevas find joy in opening the doors of their Mediterranean-style home to guests. BY EMILY SPARACINO PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON ShelbyLiving.com 39

K

Kirk and Alicia Cuevas enjoy many features of their oldworld Mediterranean-style home in Greystone, but its ample space for hosting family, friends and fundraiser event guests is a feature they prize above the others. “We have a place for them now,” Kirk says. “We enjoy it.” With numerous sitting areas and cozy spaces to take in the serene view of the golf course, the couple’s home, more affectionately known as “Casa de Cuevas,” emulates the warm demeanor of its owners. Those who cross the threshold of this grand home are made to feel welcome inside its walls. At nearly 8,500 square feet, Casa de Cuevas sits on 1.5

40 ShelbyLiving.com

acres on the 13th fairway of Greystone’s Founders Course. From their veranda, the Cuevases can see nearly every golfer in the Regions Tradition tournament hit his second shot. The couple’s proximity to the golf course has led to their hosting a “Hush Y’all” watch party at their home during the tournament. They even have official “Hush Y’all” signs left over from past tournaments for party guests to hold. The couple lived in North Lake for 10 years before moving to their current home, originally built by David Paisley in the mid-1990s, nearly two years ago. Kirk and Alicia have a 20-year-old daughter, Sarah, and a fur baby, Foxy.

Kitchen The kitchen is one of the Cuevases’ favorite rooms, mostly because it serves as a perfect place for entertaining. People can sit at the bar or breakfast table, or stand near the fireplace on the opposite wall. French doors lead out to the veranda, and tall windows let in lots of natural light. A conversation piece in the room is a carved wood door, between 120-150 years old, from Cairo, Egypt. The couple bought it from Vintage Station in Bessemer and use it as their pantry door.

Great Room High ceilings, large windows and neutral sofas balance the caramel-colored walls, black built-ins and other bold accents in the great room. The bright red leather furniture the couple previously had in the room was transferred to Kirk’s man cave downstairs. ShelbyLiving.com 41

Dining Room The dining room is beautiful in its own right, but what makes it special is a family heirloom it houses: The sterling silver punch bowl used at Alicia’s parents’ wedding in 1960.

Foyer As soon as guests walk into Casa de Cuevas, they can see the large, ornate chandelier hanging in the foyer. The chandelier is so heavy it required extra framing in the attic for support. Another point of interest is a varied group of walking sticks the couple has collected over the years. 42 ShelbyLiving.com

Alicia’s Office When they were preparing to move in, the couple discovered a treasure in the room Alicia uses as her home office. Hidden behind the previous owner’s armoire on one wall was a map of the world, seemingly etched into the wall’s surface. The wooden desk was built by Kirk’s dad as a gift for Kirk when he graduated law school. The room features a fox hunt theme.

Master Bedroom The master bedroom features a large canopy bed with drapes and a sitting area, where Kirk and Alicia have their morning coffee and daily quiet time with God. Inside a glass-top table rests a family Bible, Alicia’s father’s rosary and a cross from Jerusalem.

ShelbyLiving.com 43

Kirk’s Office Although he doesn’t work from home too much, Kirk has an office downstairs that houses different pieces of memorabilia and framed family photos. As an added bonus, he can see the golf course from his desk.

Man Cave The man cave comprises the majority of the downstairs level. A big screen TV, pool table and kitchen make the man cave a go-to space for Kirk and his brothers and nephews. “This is my chill pad,” Kirk says. “The family ends up down here.”

Old Baker Farm is ready for its annual fall festivities — and another opportunity to share its rich history with visitors. By Emily Sparacino Photos by Dawn Harrison

An unmistakable glimmer shows in Jerry Baker’s eyes as he talks about his family’s farm, Old Baker Farm, in Harpersville. It’s undoubtedly the same glimmer local schoolchildren see when Baker leads them on farm tours, or when he helps a family cut down a Christmas tree they’ve chosen on a cold winter afternoon at the farm. As another fall season arrives, Baker and his

bunch are ready once again to welcome hundreds of visitors to the 300-acre farm they call home. “We want it to grow to be a fun place that’s a blessing to (other families),” Baker says. “We try to improve it and make it better every year.” Growth and continued support from visitors are what have helped the Bakers keep their gates open to the public. School tours take place at the farm

from the last week of September to Veterans Day in November. Harvest hours for the public to visit the pumpkin patch are held each day from Sept. 30-Oct. 31. The annual Cotton Pickin’ Celebration is held the last weekend of October. Western Cowboy Day is held on a weekend in mid-October. Last but not least, the choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm is open the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve. The Bakers have run a pumpkin patch for 20 years. Throughout October, people can visit the farm during open hours on weekdays and weekends to pick pumpkins and enjoy food, arts and crafts, horseback and wagon rides and a petting farm. On Oct. 14, 9 a.m. to dark, and Oct. 15, 1 p.m. to dark, visitors can enjoy shootouts, western music, hay wagon rides, a hay mountain and the pumpkin patch as part of Western Cowboy Day. Fall harvest hours will culminate in the weekendlong Cotton Pickin’ Celebration, which will be held Oct. 28, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Oct. 29, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. “Most food is done locally, like the barbecue and kettle corn,” ShelbyLiving.com 47

Baker says of the fare available at the farm, most of which is prepared by his family. “Our food is fantastic.” They also try to grow all of their pumpkins (between 20-25 acres were planted this year), even though the northern crop is difficult to grow in the South because of the heat and humidity. “We’re blessed with cold water springs that help,” Baker says. Old Baker Farm is a non-commercialized working farm that has a place in Shelby County’s history as far back as the 19th century. The land on which the farm sits was settled by pioneers between 1800-1814 and now includes 14 springs, two creeks, big woods, a 100-yearold barn, a 200-year-old house and “lots of living history,” Baker says, adding, “This area was called the dipper of the universe by Native Americans because of the springs.” 48 ShelbyLiving.com

Baker was born in 1952 and has lived on the farm – originally his grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ farm – ever since. Six generations of Bakers have lived on the farm, and Baker is in the fourth generation to grow cotton in Harpersville. “We’re real farmers – we still farm, grow cotton and corn and have animals,” he says. But farming isn’t easy, and during tough times for the industry, Old Baker Farm’s public attractions have propped it up and allowed the family to remain on the farm. “It would be a shame for a farm like this to turn into something it’s not,” Baker says. He estimates the farm is among the state’s oldest working farms. Old Baker Farm was one of just 12 farms featured in the USDA 2000 calendar titled “Millennium

Celebration of Century Farms.” At the time, the Bakers created the Cotton Pickin’ Celebration as an event to mark this achievement. Baker’s father, one of 14 children, lived on the farm until he died in 2010 at 101 years old. He plowed the land with a mule for 60 years before he bought a tractor. “He was the ‘old Baker,’” Jerry Baker says. “He didn’t think he was. He says, ‘You’re only as old as you think you are.’” Jerry and his wife, Pam, met at Vincent High School and married in 1971. They have three grown daughters (two live in Harpersville) and 12 grandchildren. Pam is responsible for most of the farm’s bookkeeping, marketing and event personnel schedules, and she keeps the family fed with ShelbyLiving.com 49

home-cooked meals each night. She is also the pianist at Old Chapel Methodist Church in Wilsonville, where Jerry is pastor. Their Christian faith is the foundation of the farm. They even hold a church service on the Sunday morning of the Cotton Pickin’ Celebration for anyone who wants to attend. “Our goal from the very beginning was to be something unique,” Jerry says. “We put God first in what we do, always.” Are new things on the way at the farm? Yes, the Bakers say. Keeping people coming back for old traditions and helping them create new ones is all part of the fun. “We want something you can’t find anywhere else,” Jerry says. “As people come and support us, we add more and more.” ShelbyLiving.com 51

Defining

T

moments

Chelsea’s Skip Brown reflects on life after the Vietnam War. By Rene’ Day Photos by Dawn Harrison

There are defining moments in our lives – those instances that write our life stories. In the September issue of Shelby Living, readers were introduced to Skip Brown of Chelsea and one of those moments as he experienced it in the jungles of Southeast Asia in 1972. And, although it was a touchstone event and earned Brown a Bronze Star, it is far from being the only defining moment in his life. This man has had other extraordinary brushes with history – and one eventually brought him to Shelby County. When Skip was released from the hospital in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, his main priority was getting on with his life. But just leaving the hospital turned out to be more of an ordeal than he ever imagined. Again, it is important to recall that, at this point in the conflict, America was a nation

52 ShelbyLiving.com

almost at war with itself over the actions in Vietnam. And returning veterans in uniform became easy scapegoats for anti-war activists’ anger. On the morning he was discharged, Brown remembers an impromptu demonstration began on the first floor of the facility. As a requirement of the military, he dressed in his “Class A” military attire and descended the stairs. His first welcome was the pelting of balloons that, upon bursting, left ugly red bloodstains all over his clothing. Obviously, there would be no welcome parade, and getting on with his life would become more of a challenge than he realized. By 1976, Brown had met and married Cheryl and they were living in Pennsylvania. Although police work was not a part of his life yet, there were indications that it might be a good fit with this

battle-hardened man. He had a solid appreciation for good detective work and was fair in dealing with others, he said. One could even argue that attraction to the law might have been a bit genetic. His grandfather worked in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1930s and 1940s with a young detective by the name of Eliot Ness, who helped to bring down Al Capone. Trading northeast winters for southern beaches led the Browns to Delray Beach, Florida. But, in order to be a police officer, he had to first make it through the Police Academy. No small feat considering the damage done to his right leg and foot by satchel charge during the war. Brown explains that graduating was one of the proudest moments of his life – because it was one of the toughest things he has ever done. He smiles as he remembers

trying to find ways to hide the pain he experienced during the various training exercises and qualification exams. No one at the Academy had any idea about his past. Brown served as a patrol officer for several years before being approached about leading a new volunteer program involving dogs, he said. For the first time, a K9 unit had been proposed to help with routine patrols and drug inspections. Brown believed the dogs would be assets. For over a decade, Brown said he helped train German shepherds for Delray’s force as well as for those in neighboring towns. It also set in motion his life-long love affair with canines of all breeds – he still helps train pets around his Chelsea neighborhood and keeps busy with his own Nina, Abby and Cooper. Then September 11, 2001 came, and the world changed ShelbyLiving.com 53

forever. Brown’s brush with this date, though, actually began months earlier as many of the hijackers lived in the Delray Beach area, where they trained to fly planes prior to the attacks. Once this information was discovered, Delray Beach’s population swelled significantly to include federal law enforcement, government officials, journalists, media crews and curious civilians. Understandably, citizens of this and nearby Florida towns were traumatized by the possibilities that local attacks were imminent. Anyone who remembers that time will recall feeling vulnerable. Brown said he was instrumental in establishing a volunteer patrol program to recruit local veterans. Volunteers were trained to provide extra eyes and ears for the police. The visible patrol presence in public areas helped calm fears in smaller communities and freed up officers for the ongoing terrorist investigation. It was so successful, in fact, that law enforcement officials from a variety of states traveled to Delray to observe and talk with Brown about forming similar programs of their own, he said. One such visitor was Sheriff Chris Curry from Shelby County, Alabama. 54 ShelbyLiving.com

Thus, the story comes full circle. If you are familiar with the volunteer C.O.P. (Citizens On Patrol) program in Chelsea, then you know of Brown’s impact on our area. It was modeled after the Delray program. And Curry also convinced Skip and Cheryl to make Shelby County home. They moved to Alabama in 2005. Seven years later, Brown’s former Vietnam commander began communication that would ultimately lead to an April 2017 Bronze Star Award Ceremony in Florida. Over 1,000 former colleagues, friends and neighbors attended the event. And, to a person, none of the Delray police officers there had any idea they worked with an American hero. They were surprised when they learned of his actions under fire. Some remembered that he served in Vietnam – but he never talked about what he did or experienced in 1972. And, you know, most veterans are like Skip Brown. They don’t consider themselves heroes – they just did what they were called upon to do. However, our communities have been forever enriched because of their contributions. We need to take the time to listen and to learn – and, finally, to say thanks.

Health Focus of the Month: How To Prep for Fall Physical Activities

Newsletter

Every year around this time, when the pig skin is pulled back out, the grass on the fields is freshly mowed, helmets colliding, pads thumping, cheerleaders flying, volleyball players chanting, and the lights on Friday night shine bright again, a phrase that always sticks out is, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” For every athlete, young and seasoned, and for those whose

minds are willing but bodies aren’t as able, being active and fit doing activities we love is great, but we need to make sure we are preparing to work out safely. Good nutrition, adequate rest and recovery, in addition to properly warming up, cooling

down, stretching, and using proper techniques when doing drills and lifting weights are all nonnegotiable. If you have other medical issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc., or have not exercised in many years, getting

medical clearance and a prescription for exercise is sometimes needed. Knowing one’s limit is also important, as well as listening to your body when you are sore, hurt, or injured. Exercise is always a door to a healthier life, but making sure your body is prepared for it is the key. Article Submitted by: Dr. Spellmon Lemak Health

“Keeping It Real” Program Continues for 9th Grade Shelby County Students The Chamber’s Education Work Group is kicking off its 5th year of its “Keeping It Real” Program. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by giving them a randomassigned “life scenario” which includes marital/family status, education, job and salary. The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education, adding a second job, etc. based on the “randomselected” scenario. Each year this program has been an eye-

achievements, and learn how to avoid the pitfalls of their mistakes. The Roundtable program is exclusive for the

single individual responsible for the direction of the company and with the authority to make final decisions. There are currently two groups that meet — Entrepreneur Roundtable I which meets in Hoover and Entrepreneur Roundtable 280 which meets on Highway 280 — each month to discuss

opportunities, challenges and more. For additional information on the Chamber’s Entrepreneur Roundtable program — or an application to join one of the groups — please contact Chamber President Kirk Mancer by phone at 663-4542 ext. 101 or via e-mail at kirk@ shelbychamber.org.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

Katie Gray

Miss Shelby County Outstanding Teen PHOTO BY JACK BAINS, SOUTHERN EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY

North Shelby County’s Katie Gray, 15, was crowned 2018 Miss Shelby County Outstanding Teen this summer. As part of her community service platform, she is involved with the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition and Nicole’s Dancing Angels Foundation, and she is a member of Key Club at Oak Mountain High School, where she is a sophomore. Her parents are Danny and Debbie Gray. She has a brother, Chase Gray. The family has three dogs named Bernie, Jake and Tucker. What are you most looking forward to as 2018 Miss Shelby County Outstanding Teen? I am looking forward to promoting my platform “Above the Influence – A Drug Free Campaign” by speaking to children in schools and members of my community. I am also excited about meeting the citizens of Shelby County at the Columbiana Christmas parade and Liberty Day festivities. What’s something interesting people might not know about you? People might not know that I am cross dominant. Being cross dominant means that I can do one thing with one hand and everything else with the other hand. In my case, I write with my right hand 82 ShelbyLiving.com

and do everything else with my left hand. If we asked your friends what you’re most likely to be doing when you’re not at school, what would they say? My friends would say that I could be found taking dance classes and hanging out at Exclusively Ballet and Dance. If you could leave tomorrow for anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why? I would love to go to New York City because I have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show and taking a dance class at a professional studio. I also think that it would be fun to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and to also see all of the city’s landmarks.

What’s your favorite local event? I enjoy the 5K walk/runs that raise money for worthy causes such as Children’s Miracle Network, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Down’s syndrome and cancer research. What do you love about Shelby County? I love that Shelby County has many diverse activities within a short drive. You can see a variety of concerts at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre and hike or camp at Oak Mountain State Park. Shelby County is also home to many wonderful golf courses. There are also plenty of fun places to spend time with friends.
