This family friendly festival is even more special because you decided to join us. This event wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors. W

ant to head out for a day of hiking, fishing and swimming? Or maybe you’d rather spend a cool summer evening seeing a big name band in Alabama’s largest outdoor theater? Whatever your interests, Pelham has a venue to match. The largest state park in Alabama, Oak Mountain State Park boasts 9,940 acres filled with lush forests and beautiful lakes and with more than 50 acres of trails, there are plenty options for both biking and 6 | Pelham Palooza 2015

hiking from a short, one mile loop to an overnight excursion. Hiking isn’t the only option, either. Head to Flipside Watersports where you can try wake boarding, kneeboarding or tubing across 817 feet of cable at speeds up to 19 miles an hour on Beaver Lake. Visit injured native birds on the mend at the Alabama Wildlife Center and see resident animals on the Tree Top Nature Trail. Pop in next door to see exhibits at the Oak Mountain Interpretive center, where you can even hold one of the center’s special snakes.

For more outdoor fun, head to the Pelham Racquet Club. It’s court rental to play a game at the public facility, which consists of 20 clay courts and five hard courts, all lit with tournament grade lighting. The Pelham Tennis Center, located in Pelham Community Park, has nine courts as well as a fiberglass backboard, great for perfecting your backhand. Grab a group of friends and play a round of golf at the beautiful Ballantrae Golf Club. The 18-hole course is set amid rolling hills and breathtaking views, and golf pros can help you get your game up to par with a

lesson or clinic. For a more informal game, head to Southern Golf where you can play a round of mini golf or practice your swing at the batting cages. If bowling is your game, spend a day at Oak Mountian Lanes where you can enjoy cosmic bowling on Friday and Saturday nights. On a particularly sweltering summer day, lace up your skates at Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena where you can enjoy skating, broom ball, and hockey. For a bit of culture, catch a play at South City Theatre, an award-winning theater group that produces six main stage plays a year, or see a ballet performed by the Alabama Youth Ballet Company. Check out your favorite big-name band, live, at the Oak Mountain Ampitheatre. The venue features a diverse line-up of artists, with styles ranging from Toby Keith and Tim McGraw to Van Halen and Alt-J. No matter what you’re summer plans, Pelham has something for everyone! •

We build with blocks, too... “We have been at Noah’s Park for six years now with our two children. I honestly cannot think of one negative experience we have had this entire time and we still love it. My son still likes to go with me to pick up his sister even though he is in elementary school just so he can talk to his old teachers. My daughter loves going every morning and can't wait to tell Ms. Haley stories or show her something new every day. Thanks Noah’s Park!!!”

Band Profiles

Echosmith

Playing at Pelham Palooza By GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY

P

elham Palooza is a great chance to see your favorite group play live, and with shows ranging from straight-on rock and roll to country and Southern Celtic, there really is something for everyone who loves music. Kick off the weekend with a great set by Echosmith at the “Just Show Up Show” on Friday, July 17, at the Oak Mountain Amphitheater beginning at 7 p.m. It’s a free-for-all, no-tickets-required concert, sponsored by Pelham Palooza and 103.7 The Q. 10 | Pelham Palooza 2015

Echosmith is an American rock and pop band, composed of four siblings and best known for the hit song “Cool Kids.” Get ready for a day full of great music on Saturday, when six great acts will play outside at the Pelham Civic Center & Ice Arena from mid-day until the sun sets. Alabama’s dynamic country group Sweet Tea Trio will kick off the lineup at 11:50 a.m. Known for heart-melting harmonies, Kate Falcon, Victoria Camp and Savannah Coker blend southern charm and with a bit of country twang. If you’re in the mood for a fingerpicked ballad or rousing Irish reel, check out

Henri’s Notions, who take the stage at 12:55 p.m. Billed as “Celtic music from the South,” the group mixes traditional Celtic and American music and infuses the original compositions with aspects of their Southern heritage. Earthbound, a Birmingham-based rock ‘n’ roll band with americana roots, will take the stage at 2 p.m. “Describing music, a non-verbal language, in words is always a difficult task, but the music of Earthbound can best be understood in terms of the diverse influences from which the band draws the inspiration and performance,” the band states on their website, noting their

show draws from such diverse genres as folk, country, bluegrass, jazz, and psychedelia. Rollin’ in the Hay, a bluegrass-style jam band, will play the afternoon set at 3:05 p.m. “Just think high-octane groove grass with a touch of down home foot stompin’ or just simply—Renegade Bluegrass,” the band says of their style. Voted one of the “music see live acts of Alabama,” Act of Congress will take the stage at 4:10 p.m. Dave Higgs of NPR called the group “one of the freshest sounding, exuberant bands in all of the known acoustic universe.” The band classifies their music as alternative, acoustic bluegrass. Country-inspired pop artist Casey James will headline the event, beginning at 5:15 p.m. James, who placed third on the ninth season of American Idol, went on to top country charts with his song “Crying on a Suitcase” and recently released the single “Fall Apart,” penned by Will Bowen and Josh Carter and Zach Carter. So bring your lawn chairs and water—it’s sure to be a day packed with great shows! •

Sponsor Spotlight Mobley Development, Inc. By GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY

T

he city of Pelham’s Pelham Palooza is made possible in part by the generous sponsorship of Mobley Development, Inc. This year’s festival is the third to hold its signature sponsorship. Founded in 1987 by Shelby Countynative Steve Mobley, Mobley Development, Inc. is primarily a residential real estate development company. Mobley Development, Inc. has played an active part in the growth of Pelham for more than 25 years, developing such communities as Indian Creek, Ivy Brook, Stonehaven and Heather Ridge. However, perhaps the greatest pride of Mobley Development, Inc. is the 2,000 acre golf community of Ballantrae. Inspired by a small town along the coast of Scotland where Robert Louis Stevenson wrote “Treasure Island,” the community features beautiful walking trails, a pool, and many other amenities. Mobley Development, Inc. has played

a major role in sponsoring many activities and events in the city of Pelham, including the Alabama Open, which was hosted at Ballantrae for a number of years, as well as supporting Pelham schools and the Pelham Palooza since its beginning. “We believe that the Palooza is the crown jewel because it brings so many people

from Pelham together in a family-friendly atmosphere to share wonderful activities and great music,” Steve Mobley said. “Mobley Development, Inc. has chosen to sponsor and participate with the city of Pelham in these events and activities because we believe that we should pay back to the people of Pelham for what they have given to us.” •

Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company By GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY

F

ew people in the world have never been acquainted with the refreshing beverages of The Coca-Cola Company. Even the polar bears are talking about it. July 17-18, Coca-Cola will be joining the new fuss for the city of Pelham’s Pelham Palooza. Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Inc., is among the festival’s top sponsors. Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED was founded in 1902 by Crawford Johnson Sr., who purchased exclusive franchise rights for Coca-Cola bottling and distribution in Birmingham. The city is now headquarters for both the Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED. Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED 12 | Pelham Palooza 2015

is the third largest bottler of CocaCola products in the United States of America. “The Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Inc. mission is to increase and sustain its value for the benefit of its associates, owners, consumers, customers, and communities,” states cocacolaunited.com. Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Co., which is employer to over 525 people, is known for supporting many civic and charitable organizations. Some of these include The United Way of Central Alabama, Children’s Hospital of Alabama, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, McWane Science Center, the Birmingham Zoo, The Magic City Classic and various Alabama colleges.

“For over 100 years Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company has provided refreshing Coca-Cola products to the Magic City and the greater metropolitan area,” the website states. Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Co. produces and distributes over 750 beverages. These not only include the expected CocaCola, Sprite and Fanta, but also Dasani, Powerade, Minute Maid and VitaminWater. The City of Pelham anticipates a weekend of great fun and celebration with the support of Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Chef Spotlight Bill Marcie of Radical Creations catering By GINNY COOPER MCCARLEY

C

hef Bill Marcie—owner of Radical Creations catering with his wife, Tina Ridley—will be cooking up delicious treats during his demonstration on Saturday at Pelham Palooza. Marcie will be cooking asparagus fries, with plenty of extras for tasting. “It’s a great summer dish,” Marcie said. “Real simple for style for people to be able to try at home.” In order to make home cooking even more of a breeze, Marcie will have recipes cards complete with a photograph of the dish for onlookers to take home. “(Asparagus fries) are kind of a munch item that’s a little bit healthier,” Marcie said. Marcie first began cooking when he was in college at the University of Georgia in

Athens, Ga. A year later, he opened up a small pub in the city before graduating into fine dining restaurants. Over a period of more than 20 years, Marcie owned five restaurants in the city. A self-taught chef, Marcie sold the last restaurant in 2011 and moved to Birmingham where he opened Radical Creations catering, which caters a variety of events from small, private wine dinners to large weddings. “We kind of do everything,” Marcie laughed. For Marcie, the joy of cooking comes from seeing others enjoy the finished product. “It’s something that you get that instant satisfaction from,” Marcie said. “You cook something, and you can see people enjoy it.” •
