Stadiums named in someoneÕ s honor Spain Park’s Finley Field is named for longtime Berry High School coach Bob Finley, who compiled a 198-87-5 record while coaching the Bucs from 1968-1993. Pelham’s Ned Bearden Stadium is named for the man who donated much of the land for the Pelham campus. The school’s Bobby Hayes Field is named for the longtime Pelham mayor, who still strongly supports the school.

Former THS football coach Larry Simmons will forever be tied to the school’s football stadium. Simmons returns to the stadium every year to watch the Warriors play.

L

arry Simmons still remembers the play like it was yesterday. Thompson High School was playing against Eufaula in the 1981 Alabama Class 3A semi-finals, and Simmons’ Warriors were leading the Tigers with a little more than a minute left in the game. The Tigers had entered the Warriors’ territory, and one of Thompson’s starting defensive ends had to leave the game due to injury. “I had to send in one of my second-string guys, and I told the kid a thousand times ‘You’ve got to watch for the screen pass.’ That was what Eufaula was known for that year,” Simmons said. “When the next play started, the Eufaula kid, who later went to Mississippi State, ran by our back so fast his head spun.” The Eufaula player took the ball to the half-yard line before he was brought down. Two plays later, the Tigers scored to take the lead, and went on to win the game 23-12. The next week, Eufaula rolled over Hartselle 39-20 to take its second state championship in four

years. “It’s crying over spilled milk, but I honestly believe we had a good enough team to win the state championship that year,” Simmons said. Though his team missed winning a 1981 championship ring by one game, Simmons and his Warriors made it all the way the next year. In 1982, Thompson won 14 straight games, a 3A state championship and scored 362 points in the process. The 1982 state championship game was Simmons’ last as a high school coach, but his name still lights up Thompson’s James L. Simmons Stadium at every Warrior home game. “It was a very humbling experience when (they named the stadium after me),” Simmons said, noting he holds a lifetime pass to the stadium and still attends “at least a few” THS games every season. “To think someone thought enough of you to get the ball rolling to get the stadium named after you, it’s just really special,” he added.

“To think someone thought enough of you to get the ball rolling to get the stadium named after you, it’s just really special.” — Larry Simmons

Shelby County’s Papa McCombs Stadium is named in honor of the school’s longtime football supporter Charles McCombs, who cheered the Wildcats from the sidelines for many years. Calera’s Ricky M. Cairns Stadium is named for the coach who led the Eagles to region championships in 1975, 1977 and 1978 and the school’s first playoff appearance in 1975. Montevallo’s Theron Fisher Stadium is named for the longtime coach who led the Bulldogs to two region championships. Montevallo’s Richard Gillam Field is named for the coach who led the Bulldogs to five region championships from 1974-1987. Gilliam also played a key role in desegregation at the Shelby County school. Vincent’s Harold Garrett Field is named in honor of the first coach to lead the Yellow Jackets to a region championship. Cornerstone Christian’s Michael B. Willis Memorial Stadium is named for a 16-yearold Cornerstone football player who passed away a few days after suffering a hit while playing against Tuscaloosa Academy in 1999. Coosa Valley’s Don Greene Stadium is named for the president of the school’s first board of directors in 1970. 2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Jaguars count on Ward to fill many roles By Kala Bolton Photographs by Jon Goering

“He really boosts the morale of the team. He was just a motivator every day.” — Nick Mullens

T

he makeup of a team seems simple. Players play and coaches coach. But some have an extra spark that drives the team further toward success. For the Spain Park Jaguars, that’s where Will Ward comes in. Ward, who is an example of the many team managers and program supporters in Shelby County, spent his last two years of high school helping the

6

2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

baseball team and signing on to help with football his senior year. In the dugout or on the sideline for every practice and game, Ward as the Jaguars’ go-to man. “I have many different jobs,” Ward said. “Whatever they asked me to do, I’d do it.” Because of the variety of tasks Ward was asked to perform, including managing equipment, aiding with athletic training and assisting in coaching on occasion, baseball coach Will

Smith hesitates to limit the scope of Ward’s role to “manager.” “It is not necessarily a managerial role because you can find anybody to set the practice equipment out,” Smith said. Instead, coaches and players say Ward’s expertise lies in his ability to pump the team up. “He doesn’t only do physical things, he really boosts the morale of the team,” said Jaguars’ quarterback Nick Mullens. “He was just a motivator every day.”

Ward, a 2011 graduate of Spain Park, plans to continue aiding both the football and baseball teams as a graduate assistant for the next two years while attending Jefferson State Community College. Ward said he then plans to transfer to the University of Alabama and become a baseball manager for the Crimson Tide. While Ward hasn’t played baseball since he was a child, he said it was his love for the game

Will Ward serves several purposes on the sideline each Friday night at Spain Park High School.

that drove him to volunteer. “I started managing baseball my freshman year, so I’ve been doing it my whole high school career,” said Ward, who moved to Spain Park from Naperville, Ill. before the start of his junior year. Smith said Ward sought him out immediately. “I taught him when he moved his 11th grade year. He was in one of my history classes, and he said, ‘Coach, you know I want to be a manager this year,’” Smith

said. Smith told Ward to come to the first practice in January, and he did. “To be honest with you, I had kind of forgotten about the it,” Smith said. “We’re starting team practice, and he shows up. I kind of thought that day that this will be a something he kind of does half-hearted.” Boy, was Smith wrong. “He’s as committed as any coach or any player is,” Smith

said of Ward, who helped the baseball team to 68 wins during his two years with the Jaguars. Ward, who likened his bond with teammates to that of siblings, said his time with these two teams has helped him grow and has taught him valuable lessons. “What I learned from this experience is that everyone has to help out with each other and have good leadership,” Ward said. “It basically helped me get ready for the real world.” Just like any team or family, Ward and the players learned how to work together. “We all take care of him, and he takes care of us,” Mullens said. “We make sure that he’s right on time doing what he’s supposed to do and doing the same with us. He just keeps us going.” And along with lessons learned, friendships were

formed. Smith said he has seen the bond between Ward and teammates strengthen over the last two seasons. “There is always a camaraderie that he carries on in the locker room with the guys because it is a special bond, a special friendship, especially with this past senior class we had that were his age,” Smith said. “It was a unique bond they had.” Coaches and players say Ward’s contribution was invaluable. During this year’s Senior Night, Ward was recognized for his proactive support of Spain Park athletics. “We’re going to put his picture up there so we recognize him just like we do any other player,” Smith said. “We want him to feel as apart of it as anybody because he is as important to our program as any other coach or any other player would be.” 2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Foes become friends By Wesley Hallman Photographs by Jon Goering

Jake Ganus Chelsea The book on Ganus: The UAB commitment is a dangerous player on both sides of the ball for the Hornets. Ganus, who took over at quarterback midway through his sophomore season, is an accurate passer and can also get outside of the pocket and take off. Ganus is a ballhawking safety on defense.

8

2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Chelsea High School senior quarterback Jake Ganus and Briarwood Christian School senior signal caller Ben Craft are divided in many ways. As the current faces in a budding rivalry between their respective schools, Ganus and Craft lead their teams in one of Shelby County’s fiercest battles on the gridiron on Friday nights in the fall. Despite having plenty of reasons for the two to build a wall between them, Ganus and Craft found a common bond that built a friendship on and off the field — the pressure of being hated by the other team’s fan base. It first began when Ganus was heckled during and after the Hornets’ battle with the Lions in the first game with the two starting at quarterback for their respective teams last fall. Craft, who could have easily joined the party and basked in the glory of the Lions’ 41-7 victory over his former school, instead asked his fellow Briarwood Christian students to knock it off. “I hated to see that,” said Craft, who experiences the same harassment from Chelsea students. “It’s never good. I felt bad for him.” Likewise, Ganus has Craft’s back in the halls at Chelsea High School. Whenever Ganus senses a personal attack on his friend, he puts an end to the conversation. “I’ll stick up for him,” Ganus said. “I’ll ask, ‘What did he do to you?’” The friendship between the duo is still young and will grow stronger in the future when the players enroll together at UAB in the fall of 2012. Craft will play quarterback for the Blazers,

while Ganus will play safety. Ganus and Craft, who each committed to the Blazers in a span of three days in July, plan to room together during their four years at UAB. Craft said he and Ganus are excited about playing a role in changing the perception of the Blazers’ football program. “We’ve been hanging together ever since we committed,” said Craft, who became Ganus’ main recruiter for the Blazers following his commitment. “We can’t wait to get this thing started at UAB.” Don’t let the friendship between the two players fool you. They may be friends, but they’re still ultra competitive both on and off the football field. For instance, a summer afternoon on the driving range at Eagle Point Golf Club in North Shelby County turned into a battle over who’s got the best golf game, Ganus said. “I’m the worst golfer in the world,” Ganus commented, “but we’re out here hitting balls and competing.” The competitive nature of the friendship between the two quarterbacks at rival schools has spawned a mutual respect for each other for their ability on the field. Craft said he’s been impressed with Ganus’ development at Chelsea. “He’s the leader of that football team,” Craft said. “He’s done a lot better job than I would have done.” Meanwhile, Ganus took notice of Craft’s play as he led the Lions to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A championship game a year ago. “He’s a great leader,” Ganus said. “You can’t hate him for what he does.” Despite the animosity surrounding the gridiron rivalry between the Hornets and the Lions, there’s certainly no hatred between the teams’ star players. “On the field we’re competitors, but off the field we’re friends,” Ganus said. “It’s fun playing against each other.”

Running backs Senior ShaCorry Lilly is back after playing a key role in the Yellow Jackets’ rushing attack a year ago. Lilly will lead an inexperienced pack of running backs, with sophomores Jeremiah Gage and Rodney Groce and freshman Neil Glaze contributing.

Wide receivers The wide receivers will play a bigger role in the offensive plans under Ellison. Seniors Tyler Roper, Beau Blevins, Dontravious Moon, and Tanner Sands, along with sophomores Daniel Hawkins, Ryan Kelow and Sedarius Lawson, will all see playing time this season.

Offensive line Senior Ryan Brasher is back for his final season after being a stalwart member of the Yellow Jackets’

he Bulldogs return seven starters on offense and defense and will be led by second-year coach Jamie Williams. Can Montevallo win more than three games this year? That depends on the play of Garrius

Chappell.

Quarterbacks Taylor Burr, a senior, will start again behind center for the Bulldogs. A quarterback for most of his life, he’s a solid decision-maker with a high football IQ and plenty of athletic ability. Sophomore Will Snyder will serve as Burr’s backup.

16

2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Running backs Senior Garrius Chappell is a big, strong runner with the potential to be a Division I athlete. He is the key player for the Bulldogs. If Chappell has a great season, the team could win six or seven games. If he has an average season, the Bulldogs could be looking at another three-win season. Fellow senior Eugene Rodgers is a tremendous athlete with great speed. Sophomore Lance Boothe will also provide depth.

Wide receivers The Bulldogs have about six receivers they’ll put on the field, mostly to block in the Wing-T formation. Tight end Korey Cunningham, a 6-foot-4 junior, has received college football interest

from Samford and UAB. The center on the basketball team, Cunningham knows how to go up high and snag passes. Senior Darian Mounticure will also play a key role, along with juniors Deantray Freeman and D’Andre McCary.

Offensive line Senior Trey Colley will play center because he’s capable of making the most complicated blocks in Montevallo’s offensive scheme. The “heart and soul of the team,” according to coaches, Colley has yet to play a full high school season. He was injured during his sophomore year and broke two bones in his leg during last year’s jamboree. Senior offensive tackle Patrick Lawley has a mean

Garrius Chappell player. Senior David Shirah is a solid, all-around player. Senior Garrius Chappell will see time at linebacker. Akheem Purnell, a junior, will also see playing time.

streak on the field and is a throw-back, hard-nosed player. Seniors Zack Smith, Colby Taylor and Chris Terrill will also be in the mix for playing time up front.

Sophomore Artez Ferrell is a solid tackler. The rest of the secondary duties will be done by committee. Seniors Taylor Burr and Darian Mounticure, along with juniors Markes Rodgers, Tre McClendon and D’Andre McCary, will see plenty of playing time.

alera returns seven starters from last year. The Eagles have a new head coach in Wiley McKeller and lost star quarterback Brandon Wells to graduation and Alabama A&M. Can Calera recover? The answer is yes, according McKeller, who spent the previous two years as Calera’s offensive coordinator.

Quarterbacks Zack Reneau replaces Wells at quarterback. Reneau, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior, is a tremendous decision-maker who throws the ball well and doesn’t make many mistakes. Reneau controls the tempo of the game, and rarely forces his passes. Junior

Nick Ballard-Henry and freshman Cody Thompson will provide depth.

Running backs Calera fans will finally get to see what Sam Adams is capable of on the field. Adams, a junior, transferred to Calera as a sophomore but was ineligible to play and limited to practicing with the team only. A hard-nosed player, Adams is a hard runner with breakaway speed. Seniors Justin Brickler and Tony Elkins will also be part of the rotation in the backfield.

Wide receivers Jeremy Hyde, the school’s all-time leading receiver, returns for his senior season. Hyde will move from inside to outside receiver, which coaches hope

will create favorable matchups and allow him to stretch the field. Ronnie Clark, a sophomore, is a good athlete and “Mr. Do Everything,” according to his coach. Sophomore Jordan Bishop is a big target at 6-foot-3 and should see a lot of passes his way. Seniors Nick Pennington and Boise Oden will provide depth at the position.

Offensive line Calera returns just one starter on the offensive line, which will be anchored by senior Auggie Mustoe. He’s a smart player who has developed and improved since his sophomore year. When Calera runs the ball, it will run behind Mustoe. Fellow seniors T.J. Killingsworth, R.J. Davis, Darrian Johnson, Cameron Johnson and Kyle

Brasher will likely battle for the remaining starting positions.

Titus Adams

Defensive line Two starters return on the defensive line. At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, senior Tony Elkins is undersized for a defensive end but plays with a lot of heart. He’s also the leader of the defense, is strong and has great athletic ability. D.J. Johnson, a senior, is strong and will be looked to stop the interior run. Seniors Auggie Mustoe, R.J. Davis and Cameron Johnson should also see playing time up front.

Linebackers Junior Sheldon Nixon plays with enthusiasm and it shows. He always seems to be around the ball. Opponents can block him but had better stay on him. He has a knack for sniffing out the ball. Seniors Justin Brickler, T.J. Killingsworth and Kyle Brasher will likely be in the mix for the remaining starting positions.

Secondary Sophomore Ronnie Clark and senior Jeremy Hyde can catch balls on offense, and they’ll try to stop the passing attack on defense. No one can stop the pass better than Nick Pennington, a 5-foot-11 senior, who can shut down his side of the field. Juniors Zack Reneau, Sean Johnson and Keith Dowdell should also see playing time in the defensive backfield.

Special teams Hyde handled Calera’s punting duties last year, and this year will add kicking duties to his special teams responsibilities. He’s never kicked before but is capable of getting it done.

Briarwood Christian Lions

B

riarwood Christian School welcomes back 16 starters from a team that advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A championship game a year ago. With so much experience returning, the Lions have their eyes set on a fourth state title.

By Wesley Hallman/Photographs by Jon Goering

Running backs

Offensive line

Senior Matthew Furuto at H-back and senior Sam Whitaker at fullback lead the pack of Briarwood Christian running backs. Furuto will see plenty of time at receiver as well in his H-back position. Seniors David Hodges and Keaton Russell will also play key roles this season.

The Lions return four starters from the championship game. Senior Patrick Morton is set at center. Senior Nick Maxey will start at one guard position and will be joined by junior Jonathan Paramore on the opposite side of the line. Seniors Preston Pittman and Tim Crenshaw will hold down the starting tackle positions. Senior Arjan Meter and junior Kyle Jennings will provide depth.

Quarterbacks

Wide receivers

Senior Ben Craft, a UAB commitment, enters his second year as the starter after a junior season that cemented his name as one of the top quarterbacks in school history. Craft is versatile in the pocket and can beat defenses with his arm and his feet. Senior Jon Stapleton and sophomore Will Edwards will back up Craft.

Craft will have plenty of speedy targets to throw to in seniors Cole Pearson, Michael Latham and Kevin McKelvey, along with juniors Tanner Cunningham and Daniel Robert. Senior Canon Smith, who has great hands for his size, will start at tight end. Latham will also line up at tight end on occasion.

24

2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Defensive line Seniors Jackson Thomas, a tackle, and Jake Whaley, an end, lead the Lions up front on the defensive side of the ball as three-year starters. Senior Wesley Jones, who started on the offensive line last season, will move to nose guard.

AHSAA 5A, REGION 5 2010: 13-2 (8-0) Head Coach: Fred Yancey (22nd year, 207-63) Assistants: Joe Craddock, Mike Sanders, Ernest Carroll, David Hannah, Jay Mathews, Matthew Forester, Shane Harmon, Chris Donnelly and Jared Walker Last region title: 2010 Last playoff game: 2010 2011 BRIARWOOD CHRISTIAN SCHEDULE

Devin Bowman Senior Dahler Battle and junior Jordan Carroll will also see playing time.

Linebackers The Lions return two of their three starting linebackers. Seniors Roy Gilbert and Tom Muir-Taylor are back after playing a key role last season. Seniors David Townes and Michael Day, along with junior Justin Palmer, will battle for the final starting position.

Secondary The defensive backfield should be a strength for the Lions with four veteran players returning, including senior safety Chad Davis and senior cornerback Devin Bowman. Senior cornerback Kalan Reed, who missed

a majority of his junior season due to injury, has the most potential in the group. Will Byers, a junior who started several games a year ago, will round out the starters. Senior Michael Belling and junior Barnes Bankston will provide depth.

Special teams Zachary Bekken and Benson Mulvaney, both seniors, will battle each other for placekicking duties. Senior Ben Craft will serve as the team’s punter.

Players to watch QB Ben Craft, TE Canon Smith, DB Kalan Reed

Chelsea Hornets

C

helsea surprised a few folks on its way to a second-place finish in its region last season. The Hornets won’t sneak up on anyone this year with a veteran quarterback and a lot of size up front on both offense and defense.

Quarterbacks Senior Jake Ganus, a UAB commitment, enters his third season as the starting quarterback. There isn’t much Ganus can’t do. Ganus can fire a precision bomb deep downfield or tuck it and run for a first down and more. Senior Matt Mann, who will step in occasionally when Ganus is moved to receiver, sophomore Trenton Hagin and freshman David Mock will serve as

backups.

Running backs The Hornets are in good shape in the backfield with veterans Julius McCall and Antwon Williams, both juniors, returning. There is plenty of depth behind the duo, including senior Jenoah Finch, and a host of sophomores in Aki Coles, Micah Wallace and Austin Washington.

Wide receivers Senior Matthew Graben, a returning starter, leads the group of receivers. Juniors J.R. Appling and Cooper Page, along with sophomores Taylor Martindale and Connor Alder, will likely play key roles. The Hornets welcome back a returning starter at tight end in senior Jackson Hyde, but

he’s in a battle with junior Keelan Gregg and sophomore Van Carlisle for playing time.

Offensive line The Hornets feature their biggest offensive line in more than a decade. Senior Jonathan Rush and sophomore Nathan George are in the mix at center. Seniors Neal Gray, Jonathan Shoop and Daniel Parker, along with junior Darien Golden, will make up the guards. Seniors Aaron Paramore, Austin Dean and Joey Mock, who moves to the offensive line from tight end, along with junior Kyle Fine will get the majority of playing time at tackle.

Defensive line The strength of the defense lies up

Russ Birdsong

will occupy two of the starting spots. Senior Jake Ganus and junior Julius McCall will be available, but Waldrop wants to limit the amount of time the duo is playing both ways. Seniors Zac Cotney, Toney Hicks and Michael Bell will battle juniors J.R. Appling and sophomore Taylor Martindale for playing time.

Special teams

front at the line of scrimmage. Several starters return, including senior ends Joey Mock and Neal Gray in addition to senior tackle Jay Chisholm. Junior Chase Parker and sophomore Troy Marshall will provide depth at tackle. Juniors Shane Paramore and Cody Garrard will get snaps at defensive end.

Senior Joey Mock returns as the long snapper. Senior Matthew Graben is back at holder. Senior Matt Mann will battle Connor McVay for punting duties, while sophomore Taylor Martindale will handle placekicking duties.

Shelby County Wildcats

S

helby County is poised for a return to the playoffs following a down year in which the Wildcats struggled in region play. Several experienced skill position players return for coach Ryan Herring, which allows for more optimism this season.

Quarterbacks Sophomore Ty Proctor will earn the starting nod after splitting time running the offense with senior Evan McNeal a year ago. Proctor has the best arm on the team. McNeal will also see time at quarterback in a wildcat package. Freshman Cody Jones will back up Proctor.

Running backs A solid stable of running backs return, including senior Denzel Williams.

Williams provides plenty of speed, while senior Brent Wooley, junior Nathan Sawyer and sophomores Marterius McGregor and Justin Webber lead a bruising power rushing attack.

Wide receivers Senior Evan McNeal will spend most of his time at wide receiver. He will lead a pack of receivers, including juniors Jacob Tidmore and Jose Vazquez and sophomore Nick Ray. Senior Mike Pate, the Wildcats’ best blocker last season, will move from offensive tackle to tight end and will be an imposing eligible receiver.

Offensive line The starting five up front is set with senior Harrison Adams at center, juniors Joey Guthrie and Jordan Tucker at the guard positions and juniors Jacob Oliver and David Brown at the tackle positions.

Seniors Brandon Smith and Nikola McCullough will provide depth.

Defensive line Several players will play both ways for the Wildcats. Herring expects senior Harrison Adams and juniors Joey Guthrie, Jordan Tucker, Jacob Oliver and David Brown to help out on the defensive line. Juniors Nathan Sawyer and Skylar Martin will also be part of the rotation.

Linebackers Seniors Evan McNeal, Denzel Williams and Brent Wooley will return with plenty of experience at linebacker. The trio will be joined by sophomores Marterius McGregor and Austin Poe.

Secondary Senior Evan McNeal will also see time at defensive back. The rest of the secondary

Oak Mountain Eagles

O

ak Mountain is thirsty for success as head coach Jeff Harris enters his third season at the helm. The Eagles hope to turn the corner in 2011 with several returning veterans, who plan to play on both sides of the ball, leading the way.

Quarterbacks Sophomore Mickey Forrest was called into action early in his career after injuries sidelined everyone else on the depth chart a year ago. Forrest, who picked up valuable experience as a freshman, has had a good spring and summer. Junior Jake Adams will likely serve as Forrest’s back up in his first season with the Eagles.

36

2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Running backs

Clopton will provide plenty of depth.

Senior Bradley Bostick has cemented his status as the Eagles’ top rushing threat. Bostick is one of the fastest running backs around and is adept at finding an open hole, no matter how small. Junior Barrett Gossett will give Bostick a breather every once in a while.

Offensive line

Wide receivers Forrest will have several options at receiver, including seniors Heath Quinn and Jakaryus Redwine, junior Adrian Williams and sophomore Kory Vanderbilt. Senior Jordan Pierce and junior Scott Hester, who will line up at tight end and H-back, are returning veterans. Seniors Jordan McLain, Matthew Bass, Austin Smith and Jaleel

The Eagles bring back two returning starters up front in senior tackle Jacob Guillary and sophomore guard Christopher Richmond. Senior Harmon Guraya will likely start at center. Junior Austin Moro will fill another spot on the line, and the Eagles are still searching for a fifth starter. Expect seniors Will Schweer, Tyler Sockwell and Josh Self, along with junior Billy Dasher, to battle for the lone remaining spot.

Defensive line Several key players return up front on the defensive side of the ball, including juniors Tommy McGowan and Austin Moro, who are returning starters.

Mickey Forrest Kimbrough saw plenty of playing time in 2010 and should be ready for a bigger role this season. Junior Jake Kelley will also get plenty of playing time after shining in the spring. Senior Bradley Bostick, along with juniors Bowen Gurkin and Adrian Williams and sophomore Kory Vanderbilt, will also be in the mix for playing time.

Special teams Seniors Jordan Pierce and David Sauers, along with juniors Lloyd Time and Scott Hester, will also be part of the rotation on the line of scrimmage.

Senior Mitch Mathias, who one of the strongest legs returns as the kicker. Junior Cole is the favorite to win duties.

Linebackers

Players to watch

The Eagles must replace two starters in the middle of the defense, but Oak Mountain should be in good shape with senior Chris Jones and junior John Michael Miller returning. Senior Justin Woodall will use his wrestling skills to take down opponents from his linebacker position. Senior Hunt Hobbs will also be in the mix for playing time.

pain Park welcomes a new coach in former Troy University quarterbacks coach Chip Lindsey. Lindsey will be greeted by a roster stacked with experienced veterans, which is good news for

Jaguar fans.

Quarterbacks Junior Nick Mullens took over the quarterback position shortly before the 2010 season began and showed great promise in his first season under center. Mullens should benefit from Lindsey’s tutelage. He’s already impressed his coach as a student of the game. Senior Jeff Heinke, who hasn’t

played since his freshman year, and sophomores Parker Hall and Connor Tinney will provide depth.

Running backs Junior Kevron McMillan saw his role increase last season when senior Ashton Daniel went down with a knee injury. Both are back this year, along with senior Sean Mardis, and give the Jaguars plenty of options in the backfield. Seniors John Mwaituka and Trudarius Clark offer even more diversity at the H-back position.

Wide receivers Senior Reid Reinagel began last season as the starting quarterback before an injury forced him to move to wide

receiver. The move paid off as Reinagel became a top option for Mullens. Seniors Drake Grisham, Alando McDaniel and Ben Olinger will see their roles increase this fall. Seniors Hunter Kahn and Cade Hoffman are the top two options at tight end.

Offensive line The Jaguars will have to retool their offensive line, with only two starters back in seniors Ben Tamburello and Robert Bagwell. Tamburello will move from guard to center, while Bagwell will start at left tackle. Seniors Madden Saverse and Martin Canales, along with sophomores Caleb Plaisted and Jay Douglas, will battle for the other three starting positions.

Nick Mullens

Senior Vidal Dortch will provide depth.

Secondary Four returning starters make this group the strength of the team. Senior cornerbacks Chris Humes and Devon Brown, along with senior safeties Destin Challenger and Justin Carter, are all potential Division I recruits. The four veterans have played a lot of games for the Jaguars. Seniors Thomas Rush and Terry Harris will also see playing time as backups.

Special teams Defensive line Two starters return up front for the Jaguars, including junior tackle Jacob Chaffin and senior end Kameron Ricks. Senior Moe Mills will likely earn the starting nod at the other tackle position. Senior Dustin Cowart will be the final piece of the puzzle at end.

Linebackers The Jaguars will welcome two new starters at linebacker in junior Jacob Wolkow and senior Alex Roberson, who moved to the defensive side of the ball in the spring after playing running back a year ago. The duo will join a returning starter in junior Jeniah Jackson to form a formidable group.

The Jaguars will be searching for a new punter in fall practice. Senior Jake Hoffman returns as the team’s placekicker.

he defending Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A champions must replace several talented players who sparked the Rebels’ run to a state title. New coach Bobby Hughes takes over for Vince DiLorenzo and looks to keep Coosa Valley at the head of the pack.

Quarterbacks Senior Cody Wood will take over behind center in his first season with the Rebels. The 6-foot-3, 165-pound quarterback has his coaches’ confidence after displaying a strong arm during

spring practice and summer workouts. Coaches haven’t settled on a backup for Wood entering fall practice.

Running backs The Rebels will rely on juniors Adam McCranie and Landon Floyd in the backfield. The duo will play a smaller, but important, role in the Rebels’ spread offense.

Wide receivers Wood will have plenty of receivers to choose from this season. The Rebels are stacked at the position with seniors Mason Donahoo, Preston Parker, Steven Cryer and Cody Garrett, along with junior Dusty Sims and sophomore

Grant Lovelady, all fighting for playing time.

Offensive line Senior Myles Varner leads a deep group at the line of scrimmage. Varner will be joined by seniors Matthew Zettler and Hayden Haynes, along with juniors Travis Clinkscales, Collin Johnson, Joe Miller, Kyle Maxwell and Andrew McLain, on the offensive line.

Defensive line The Rebels will feature plenty of twoway players. Seniors Myles Varner, Matthew Zettler and Hayden Haynes will lead the group of defensive linemen. Juniors Travis Clinkscales, 2011 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

ornerstone Christian returns six starters and offense and defense. Chargers coach Tim Smith will need freshman and team newcomers to step up throughout the season to fill in the gaps.

Quarterbacks Sterling Riether and Adrian Young, both juniors, will battle for the starting quarterback role. Riether was the starter last year, and he’s a quiet leader who leads by example. Fullback Clayton Halbert, a senior, was the team’s second-leading rusher last season. He’s not the fastest guy on the field, but he is one of the toughest, and can grind out yards up the middle. Seniors Auston Wingard and Austin Davis will see time at running back, as will junior B.J. Smith.

Offensive line

Wide receivers Senior Hagan Joiner returns at wide receiver after leading the team in receiving last season. He’s got good hands, and he’s improved his route running throughout the summer. Davis and junior Demetrius Conwell will see

Three offensive lineman return from last year. Senior Jonathan Rodchester moves from tackle to center. Senior Chase Payne will play guard. F

irst-year Kingwood Christian head coach Bob Spurgeon, a former assistant coach at the school, will be looking to build on last year’s success, as the Lions posted a 7-4 record and narrowly missed the playoffs. Several experienced players are returning, but Spurgeon will have to look to young talent to fill some key positions this season.

Quarterback Gavin Sumrall, a 5-foot10-inch, 140-pound sophomore, will step into the starting playcalling position in his first season on the varsity squad after the graduation of last year’s starter. Senior Charles Robinson and sophomore Montez Haynes will serve as Sumrall’s backup.

The Lions’ running game will feature junior Dalton Sparks, who saw several carries last season, and Charles Robinson, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior. Senior Jon Edmondson and Haynes will also see their share of carries.
