Storytelling Magic
Taking inspiration from her own children, Martha Underwood’s Christmas-themed Elf Series books help children explore diversity, self-esteem and emotions. Photo by Kathryn Bell Design by Connor Martin-Lively
I have a confession: I have a habit of procrastinating writing, and the more weight a story has, the more I tend to put it off. It’s the most powerful stories that are the most intimidating to try to do a small bit of justice to with my words. So in the meantime, it’s easier to answer emails and do about 152 other tasks. For this issue I admit that was the case in writing about the documentary-in-the-works on Joey Hale, who has had seven brain surgeries and has worked at the Publix in Valleydale Village on Caldwell Mill Road since it opened. It was nothing short of touching to get a preview of the movie with the filmmaker and learn the back stories of both Joey and the film itself, but how could I convey just how touching it was? Eventually though I had no choice but sit down with a Word document full of notes and make myself transform them into a narrative. I can’t say I did it perfectly, but the filmmaker told me she cried when she read it. So perhaps you should have Kleenexes on hand to read it as well? We’ve got a sweet set of stories before you get to that one if you flip through these pages in order too. Martha Underwood—who you will find on our cover—has written a series of books about elves filled with life lessons, and we bring you the story of how those came to be. After that we look at the messages that go up behind Thompson High School’s run through signs at football games and the impact they have. Next up is a taste of tea at a quaint tea room at a historic inn in Columbiana, and just after that we take you on a tour of a new custom home in Chelsea that brings the outdoors in. Behind the story on Joey, our Hit the Road feature this season takes you to three resorts in the Carolinas where you can be active in all kinds of off-the-beaten-path ways, and our annual Holiday Gift Guide is also full of ideas for those who are both easy and hard to buy for on your list all while shopping local. As we head into holidays, here’s to all the rich stories that our community will continue to live and that our team at Shelby Living has the pleasure to share with you! Feel free to send ideas for them my way any time.

Magical elves guide children through lessons of diversity, self-esteem and emotions in a new book series. BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE PHOTOS BY KATHRYN BELL & CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

Children’s eyes often sparkle even brighter than the colorful lights strung on trees and houses during the Christmas season. But for many, the holidays felt a little less magical last year thanks to the pandemic and the difficult emotions it brought. To help her sons and other children better manage those feelings, Martha Underwood turned to something she’s enjoyed since she was young: books. “I’ve always loved literature,” says Martha, a senior technology executive who lives in Helena. “In

addition to going to a computer magnet school to learn how to program, I always took creative writing courses up through college. I always loved storytelling.” But, it wasn’t until she saw her sons in quarantine last year that she knew what topic she was meant to write her first book about. Her youngest son, Kole, was worried about if they would be able to enjoy the holidays due to COVID, so Martha set out to find a way to create a book that would tie in a lesson to help them get through that time. To do so, the family began drawing and writing
Black and brown kids don’t normally get to see themselves, which is why I wanted to create diverse books. They relate better to seeing someone who looks like them. -Martha Underwood stories about Christmas, looking for ways to weave life lessons into both their bonding time and the book. “That’s one of the things my dad taught me,” Martha says. “If you’re going to tell a story, help them through it by teaching them a lesson.” In the end, she had a children’s book about managing emotions and feelings, all with Christmas as a background theme to make it fun and engaging. Her hope for the book was that it would help her sons and other children explore diversity, selfesteem and emotions. “I wanted them to know it’s okay to feel your emotions, especially for boys,” Martha says. “Boys are taught to suppress them, so it’s important to show illustrations that boys can get sad, depressed and scared too. Those are normal emotions to
explore and talk about.” The story portrays not only a child’s excitement about Christmas, but also the fear that not managing their emotions may ruin the holidays. Secretly guided by magical elves, the child journeys through a series of events to show their parents the lessons they’ve learned and that they can communicate their feelings. When it came to inspiration for the elves in the book, Martha had searched online to see what the elf might look like for the book and found the elves of color were portrayed as evil or dark, whereas the white elves looked happy with rosy cheeks. “If my son had done that search, what would that say to him?” Martha says. “That would show him that, subconsciously, brown or black are bad and ShelbyLiving.com

FAMILY TRADITIONS Each year, Martha Underwood’s family reads The Elf on the Shelf, pulling out their elf doll who is sure to get into some mischief throughout the month. Her oldest son, KJ, named the doll B when he was 2 years old. Now, her youngest, Kole, continues the tradition, waiting to see where the elf will show up each morning starting Dec. 1. “He just loves it. His eyes light up,” Martha says of Kole. “As a parent, that makes you feel good. You can see them have that imagination and belief in something higher. That’s one of the things we love to keep alive in our household.” The family members also open up one stocking each on Christmas Eve, and around the holidays, they also share what they’re thankful for, along with their successes and failures from the year.

white elves are good.” Seeing those images fueled her even more to create a book that showed a friendly elf of color that her children and others could relate to. “Black and brown kids don’t normally get to see themselves, which is why I wanted to create diverse books,” she says. “They relate better to seeing someone who looks like them. Having a brown elf who had rosy cheeks and a big bright smile was welcoming. If we want to see change, we need to be the change.” Martha also wanted to show a two-parent family unit through the book to convey another important message, considering society often thinks brown or black children come from broken homes. “That’s not necessarily true,” Martha says. “There are lots of two-parent homes leading healthy, happy lives.” Put all of that together, and Martha had a book called Parker’s Elf, which is her youngest son’s middle name. While her son liked it, he didn’t feel like they were done. “Don’t you think girls would want this too?” he asked his mom. So, for a different version of the book she changed the main character and other parts of the book to better reflect a girl’s emotions, naming that one Paiyton’s Elf. But even then, her son wasn’t finished making the books as inclusive as possible. Kole’s best friend is white, so he asked his mother if she could also create a book where his friend could see himself too. That brought Ethan’s and Emma’s Elf to life, with a white boy and girl as the main characters. All of the books have minor differences, and each introduce unique characters in the same story. Shivers Sapp, owner and operator of ACA Counseling in Hoover, who shared the books with her colleagues and says they were phenomenal. One reason why Sapp uses the books in her office is because of how the stories identify the different ways boys and girls express and experience their feelings. The books also normalize that little boys get angry and sad, which was something that especially stood out to her. “I tell all (my clients) that God gave us all of our emotions,” she says. “It is okay to experience all feelings—it’s normal. The challenge is learning how to respond to our emotions appropriately.” The Elf Series isn’t just for children either. It also emboldens parents to speak to their children about their emotions. “I really want them to encourage their children—especially during COVID—to talk about how they’re feeling,” Martha says. “The suicide rate in elementary and middle school kids has risen because kids feel isolated. We can use Christmas time, when people think about family and feeling love and joy, to talk about how they’re feeling.” Even beyond the current pandemic, children constantly transition to new stages of life, whether it’s starting school, meeting new people, experiencing loss or any number of events. Martha hopes this book can help start the conversation about how they’re doing through all of those things. “Ask how they feel, like if they’re anxious, sad or scared. Let them know you’re going to work through it together,” she says. “If you don’t know about it, you can’t help them through it. Communication is key.” Martha’s writing certainly didn’t end in 2020 either. She plans to pen more books that include characters Parker, Paiyton, Emma and Ethan as best friends—“to show we’re more alike than we’re different,” she says. Her newest title, Black Boy Ballad, is dedicated to her oldest son, KJ, and aims to inspire children to shed their self-doubt and find affirmation in their God-given gifts. “I wrote it to let him know you’re wonderfully made by God, brilliant, brave and smart,” Martha says. “I wanted him to know you’re more than just your skin color and to remember that always.” The Elf Series is available at Once Upon a Time in Homewood and Mountain Brook, the Hoover Public Library, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and BN.com, Target.com and Walmart.com.

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER
‘TIS THE SEASON
Act of Congress and The Song are scheduled for upcoming shows, with a Holiday Artists Market in between. BY KATLYN COLEY PHOTO BY KELLEN COLDIRON This holiday season, the Shelby County Arts Council has events planned that will bring joy and fun while also allowing us to come together and strengthen the community in a way only the arts can do. The Annual Holiday Artist Market returns to the Grande Hall, where artists and craftspeople of all mediums come together to sell their creations, and for a more intimate event, there will be two festive shows coming to the Alan and Lindsey Song Black Box Theater. In June 2021, Act of Congress performed in the Black Box Theater with a completely sold-out show and is nearing another sellout! This new Christmas show has something to offer for the whole family or a fun date night for couples. The “Newgrass” string quartet has picked up gigs all around the American Southeast and traveled the world playing as cultural ambassadors, but now they stay close to home and play for weddings, Christmas shows and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The group was founded in the early 2000s by guitarist Chris Griffin and mandolinist Adam Wright. Griffin, a world-touring musician and worship creative director for the largest church in Alabama, happily shared his experiences as a musician with Act of Congress with the SCAC staff. “When we first formed, groups like Nickel Creek were influential in AOC’s sound,” he says. The group never signed a label and always produced and planned all their touring themselves. Through that they say they were able to stay true to their faith and put out music that reflected their Christian values. “We feel blessed to be able to stay close to home and continue playing music! Check out one of our family friendly shows!” See Act of Congress live in the Alan and Lindsey Song Black Box Theater on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 (+tax/fee). The next month come be inspired by handcrafted art and gifts created by a variety of talented artists at the Annual Holiday Artist Market. Pick out a one-of24 November/December 2021
a-kind holiday gift or browse for yourself with a wide range of pottery, jewelry, paintings, fiber art and more. The market will take place Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Grande Hall of the Shelby County Arts Center. Stop by on Friday, Dec. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. for the first look Preview Party, where you will have the first chance to shop the market while enjoying complimentary light refreshments and beverages. The market is free and open to the public. New to the Black Box Theater Dec. 10 is Dove Award-nominated band The Sound! This musical family trio consists of Rob Mills and his two sons, Levi and Jacob. The group blends the Nashville sound with Christian music into one incredible performance. Check out these stars on the rise in an intimate listening venue. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 (+tax/ fees) and can be purchased at shelbycountyartscouncil.com. It’s a Tuesday afternoon in the cheerleading gym at Thompson High School. JV cheerleaders are rushing off to a game in their red, black and white THS uniforms. But today the varsity cheerleaders are in shorts and T-shirts, and there’s no room to tumble and lift in the space. Instead the floor is lined with layers of green butcher paper, and the girls are scattered on top of it with paint brushes in hand. This week’s sign the football players will run through at the start of Friday night’s football game has a safari theme. “Let’s Get Wild” it will read, with animal print designs inside dark letters. Behind it a few girls are painting white letters instead of black with a different message though. “He will crown you and your efforts with success,” the tall, thin all-caps letters read, quoting Proverbs 3:6. As Alabama’s current state championship team hovers behind a giant paper sign nearly four times their height each Friday evening in the moments before their game, fans see a catchy slogan about defeating their opponent that night, often tied to the school’s dress-up theme for the week. But the players themselves see the back side of the sign instead, and on it is written a different Bible verse each week that the cheerleaders have selected. Ashley Van Zandt’s husband first noticed the verse on the back of the sign three years ago when their son Jax, now a senior, was a freshman. Her husband snapped a picture and sent it to Ashley, and they both thought it was a one-time thing. Before long, though, it had become tradition for the team—and for

As for Jax, a linebacker committed to play at the University of North Texas next year, he reads the verse behind the sign each week after Coach Mark Freeman prays with the team and before he starts pacing, and he goes on to read it a couple of additional times in those pregame moments. “Before we run out there it’s important to be covered in scripture,“ he says. A few years ago Ashley started taking a picture of the verse each week and posting it on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with her other game day photos. But soon people both locally and in other areas who follow her came to expect her Bible verse sign photo each week and share it. Coach Mark Freeman has also posted photos of the back side of the signs on Twitter each week this season and last. “Humbled with the peace of knowing the last thing our guys see prior to kickoff is the power and promise in scripture! Blessed and thankful!” he tweeted after the Aug. 21 game with a photo of the sign that bore the words of Luke 1:37: “For nothing is impossible with God.” On Oct. 24, 2020, the night Thompson won its second region championship last season, Ashley’s photo of that week’s sign shows Psalm 62:6 in the foreground. “Truly he is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” Behind it you can read Hoover’s sign on the opposing side. “Overall we have more state championships,” it reads. But not the 2019 or 2020 title. The Bible verse signs took on extra significance early in the 2020 season as well. With COVID-19 protocols, many of the football team’s traditions couldn’t go on as usual. Their weekly prayer breakfast was held indoors, and cheerleaders and trainers couldn’t come. The team couldn’t wear their jerseys to school. And there

were no run-through signs. Instead, the cheerleaders made a smaller sign for each game to hold up on the sidelines with a piece of scripture, on the front side. “I will walk by faith even when I cannot see,” a black sign with red and white letters that stood about a cheerleader and a half tall read on Aug. 29, 2020, quoting 2 Corinthians 5:7 as the cheerleaders held it up with their black face masks on. “During that time, our boys definitely needed their encouragement and to know that even though things weren’t normal they still wanted to support them,”

Ashley recalls. “It’s been an inspiration especially last year during COVID when they were struggling in the field house and didn’t have interaction with anyone,” Thompson cheerleading coach Niva Roberson adds. After the tradition first started, the cheerleaders didn’t have a good sense of if the football players liked it, but then one week they ran out of time and had no verse on the back of the sign. And that’s when they got the feedback on how meaningful it is to them. “The players will have a fit if it’s not on there,” Varsity Cheerleading Co-captain Maddie Estes says.
Thompson cheerleaders made special signs with scripture in 2020 during games when they weren’t able to make run through signs due to COVID-19.

TEA TIME
A tea room tucked in the historic Columbiana Inn just might anticipate your heart’s desire before you arrive. BY SASHA JOHNS PHOTOS BY MARY TWEEDY ShelbyLiving.com

The Hearts Desire Tea Room is located inside the historic Columbiana Inn on East College Street in Columbiana.
There’s breakfast. There’s lunch. There’s dinner. And then there’s afternoon tea. The two-hour luncheon event with friends in the historic Columbiana Inn—they suggest at least a party of four—will leave you feeling relaxed, well looked after and quite full. But what exactly is afternoon tea? It was the brainchild of Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1800s. Finding herself hungry by late afternoon because the custom of the time was to serve dinner between 8 and 9 p.m., the Duchess began ordering tea, fancy sandwiches and cakes to her room each day to help hold her over. Eventually, a guest or two was invited to join her, and naturally, the ladies of society took to it and

afternoon tea parties became a “thing.” By contrast, high tea, though its name leads most to believe it is the loftier event, was the common man’s tea. Served on high tables for the working class, it consisted of less pomp and more circumstance with eats and hot foods that would sustain those who had to go back to work. Those were the items that made up high tea. “It sounds like it would be just the opposite of what it is,” Hearts Desire Tea Room and Columbiana Inn Owner Diane Moore says as she educated us, “but afternoon tea is the fancier, more luxurious meal.” And the meal that Diane provides for her guests almost can’t be contained by the word “fancy.”
Prompt arrival at Hearts Desire is paramount because once afternoon tea begins, it doesn’t slow down for two hours. Two decades into hosting a tea room, Diane plans her tea parties carefully. She reserves and serves only four tabletops at a time each day, so reservations must be made in advance. Those who are tardy might risk missing the tea course, which sets the whole event into motion. Hearts Desire offers 18 loose leaf teas to each of its guests with flavors ranging from traditional Earl Grey to a jasmine variety called Buckingham Palace Garden Party. Fruity teas and seasonal teas can also be found on the list. Each attendee is brought their choice of a three-cup pot of tea. Once guests drink their first cup, they often share and swap
tastings of each choice with the second cup. As the tea begins to flow, the first course of food will begin arriving: Diane’s famous Panic Chicken Salad along with fruit and a small personal quiche. The first time she served tea, Diane was in a panic, having never made chicken salad before. The unusual curried delectable served in a crystal footed bowl, however, was a hit, and it ended up becoming one of the first signature items that Hearts Desire became known for. As guests begin to finish the individual plates from the first course, Diane and her helpers deliver three-tiered stands full of the small sweets and savories that make up the second course. It would be an “absolute sin to have tea without a cucumber ShelbyLiving.com

sandwich,” Diane will tell you. And that’s just what you’ll find as the centerpiece of the course, topped with its signature ribbon rose decoration, along with or three other colorful finger sandwiches. Around it, you’ll find sweets like cream cheese scones and fruit. But don’t let yourself think that dessert is done then. The third course brings the signature Hearts Desire
brownie, heart-shaped and topped with a chocolate-almond whip. Guests won’t regret it when “comfortably full” becomes “slightly uncomfortable,” and Diane will happily provide to-go boxes for the treats that just can’t possibly be managed before it’s time to go. With each course, this leisurely and indulgent meal affords friends plenty of time to catch up and enjoy each other’s company without being rushed and
feeling guilty for taking up space in a restaurant. While there may be other guests there, it’s easy to feel like your table is the only one in the house. Diane does her homework in advance, asking in advance about dietary needs and any special information she may need to know for each party too. And we haven’t even gotten to the setting yet. The Columbiana Inn, which houses the tea room in its front parlor, is its own thing to behold. It was originally built by Clarence Dubose in 1889, who was at one time the editor of the Shelby County Sentinel, now known as the Shelby County Reporter. Though it now has six guest rooms, the fully restored Victorian was once a small one-room structure. In the early 1900s, the Pitts family purchased the home and built it up to a second floor. Over the better part of the next century, it took on many forms of home for many people. It even served as a boarding house for student teachers in the 1920s. By the time Diane and her husband, Andrew, became the owners, the inn had fallen into disrepair. Five years of love and commitment to restoration later though, they’d brought the home back to its former glory even as they walked through open heart surgery for Andrew and the loss of Diane’s mother.

A CULINARY TOUR The regional fame that Hearts Desire enjoys is now being celebrated on a larger scale with its writeup in Monica Tapper’s book, A Culinary Tour Through Alabama History, which was released on Oct. 4. Hearts Desire Tea Room will be hosting a book signing with the author on Nov. 14. Guests can come by for a peek of the tea room and a visit with the author that day from 2 to 4 pm.
In the early years of the renovation, the tea room was located at their 1879 Victorian home in Wilsonville, The Densler House. “There were often hard days during those years,” Diane told us, “but as soon as my feet hit the first step on tea party days, everything felt a little lighter for a while.” Guests often ask to peek at the rest of the home when tea is over, and Diane happily obliges when there aren’t bed and breakfast guests that might be disturbed. “It really is a charming house,” she says.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR
Kelsey Griffin
Half Shell Oyster House Marketing Director PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
A taste of the Gulf is coming to the new Campus 124 development in the former Valley Elementary School building in Pelham this winter. The first Half Shell Oyster House opened in 2009 in Gulfport, Mississippi, and now 14 locations across Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana serve up its selection of Southern cuisine with a New Orleans flair. The concept was born in the mind of company president Bob Taylor and polished off later with his partners Rob Heffner, Kevin Fish and Brian Raspberry. To learn more about what to expect on the menu and more, we chatted with the restaurant’s marketing director. What are some of the most popular items on the menu? The Redfish Orleans is blackened redfish topped with Gulf shrimp that is sautéed in our original New Orleans-style smoky Cajun sauce, and topped with lump crabmeat and Parmesan cheese. The Big Easy Surf and Turf is a crowd pleaser as well. USDA Choice filet is served over a fried hand-crafted crab cake garnished with balsamic glaze and topped with Bearnaise sauce, lump crabmeat and Parmesan cheese. It’s a culmination of land and sea with the perfect amount of Southern flair!
beurre blanc. The Seafood Stuffed Portabellas are an excellent choice for those who may be pescatarian and/or trying to eat on the lighter side. Grilled portabella mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat, Gulf shrimp, minced chipotle peppers, roasted red peppers and spinach. It’s garnished with a homemade lemon aioli and sprinkled with grated Parmesan cheese.
Why did you choose the Birmingham area market, and Pelham and this location in Campus 124 specifically, for a new restaurant location? It is exciting to be building in Pelham’s What are some of your personal favorite only entertainment district and newest trail system. We really fell in love with the items on the menu? The Bacon and Pecan Crusted Redfish area after opening some of our newest has redfish seasoned and coated in a bacon locations in Birmingham and Trussville and pecan breading, and it is topped with last year. Campus 124 brings a variety to chopped bacon and homemade citrus the community that we are looking

forward to being a part of. What do you recommend on the drink menu? One of our most popular martinis is our Pink Pearl Martini. It is a pomegranate martini that is perfectly balanced on the sweet and sour spectrum. Our Southern Pecan Old Fashioned is a go-to for new and seasoned bourbon lovers. What will the look and feel be like inside? The look and feel will be consistent with our Half Shell Oyster House brand. The atmosphere offers a relaxed yet classic vibe reminiscent of the French Quarter. The interior subtly showcases exposed brick, wrought iron railing, stained glass and antique doors. The design is complimented by the sound of jazz that weaves through the air.

When the COVID-19 quarantine first started in the spring of 2020, the Pitts family had just moved into their new Chelsea home. But perhaps more notably, they’d just moved onto the wooded land where the house overlooks a private lake. There they have seen fish, turtles, birds, ducks and even an otter as they swim, fish, paddle boat and hit floating golf balls into the water. And for those first few months,
42 November/December 2021
their two kids could do all of that all day every day. The family had previously lived in Chelsea Park but long wanted to move to land that felt more like the country, and they found just the right spot to purchase from a friend that is minutes away from their schools and other community amenities. “It’s convenient, but you do feel like you are out in the country when you are here,” Cassie Pitts says.
To bring their dreams for their forever home to life, Cassie and her husband, Philip, collaborated with architect David Smelcer and Cassie’s dad Richard Benson—who came out of retirement after decades building homes in Greystone, Southlake and Highland Lakes as Benson Custom Homes. They wanted it to have a timeless look indoors and out, with a painted brick exterior and stone
accents. Fittingly, when it came time to decorate interiors, Cassie Pitts drew inspiration from the woods and lake outside its windows to bring the outdoors in. Using a mix of pieces she already had and new ones she found, she created a mix of warm, earthy tones that create a peaceful vibe that echoes what the family enjoys outside the home’s doors. Cassie especially enjoys selecting furnishings from Ballard Designs because of all the patterns you have to choose from in their fabric selections.
Living Room Cassie commissioned a painting by local artist Vaughan Pursell Spanjer with inspiration from the green of the lake in the large windows on the other side of the room. She pulled out greens and yellows from the art for throw pillows on their sectional from Arhaus at The Summit.

Cassie painted this portrait of their dog Lucy at a Paint Your Pet event at Pursell Farms working with their resident artist Vaughan Pursell Spanjer.
Kitchen
Cassie found this McKenzie Childs checkered piece at an estate sale.
What you won’t find in the Pitts’ kitchen is a refrigerator, pantry, microwave or other countertop appliances. Instead they all live in a butler’s pantry area behind the main kitchen space to keep “stuff” from filling the counters. The space also captures the light, warm and timeless feel Cassie envisioned for it.

Joey’s
Joy
A new documentary captures a Publix employee’s lifetime of resilience amidst trial after trial. By Madoline Markham | Photos Contributed
In a culture where everyone seems to be in a hurry all the time, there’s an exception at the Publix on in Valleydale Village on Caldwell Mill Road. There you will often find all the lines empty except one, with around 10 people in it. Customers are all waiting longer than they need to for one reason: to say hi to Joey Hale. To know Joey is to know his joy, his smile and his jokes. Joey never forgets a name, and seemingly everyone around him gravitates toward him. Dana Abercrombie first reunited with Joey at Publix when her three sons were young. He’d bag her groceries and walk her to her car, and they’d reminisce about their days growing up as students at Saint Rose Academy. Like many other customers, Dana knew his joy. But she also knew how it was all the more incredible
given his back story—of a tragic car accident, of head trauma, of seven brain operations, of a year spent not speaking and barely moving—and of all the tales of triumph he had lived in the wake of so much struggle. “I would see some people straight up ignore him, and I thought they might not realize that their bag boy at their local grocery store is probably one of the most amazing people they will meet in their entire life,” Dana recalls. “Somebody has got to make a movie about you,” Dana finally told Joey one day as they walked to her car. “Okay, when are we going to get started?” Joey ShelbyLiving.com
53
asked. And that’s just what they did. In Dana’s words, she was “just a stay-at-home mom and Publix customer,” but she’d always wanted to make films. Soon she was investing in professional camera equipment and connecting with sound engineers, film editors and other professionals to get on board with the project. More than anything, though, she had a passion to tell Joey’s story—one that’s just as strong 13 years into making the project as it was that first day she told Joey about it in the Publix parking lot. “Joey is doing all the work,” Dana says. “I just had to show up with a camera.” And show up the camera did, at the many jobs Joey was working a decade ago at Hamburger Heaven on 280, at Dana’s family’s restaurant Leonardo’s and at the Mountain Brook YMCA. Just like at Publix, the line to get a program from Joey before a worship service at the Church at Brook Hills is just as long,
as the documentary footage shows. Early in the documentation process, Dana asked Joey to write down the names of Publix customers who would want to be videoed for the documentary just as he writes down customers’ prayer requests in a spiral-bound notebook he keeps in his pocket. Before long he had 700 names. “Joey has so many things going wrong with him with tunnel vision, hearing aids, a speech impediment, balance issues, but he is so joyful and happy to be alive,” Dana says today. “It sets people’s sights where they need to be.” Another breakthrough moment in the filmmaking process came eight years in when Dana uncovered a VHS tape in Joey’s parents’ basement that was the cinematic moment she’d been looking for the whole time. To understand its importance, you need some back story first: Joey’s family was in a hit-and-run car accident with a drunk driver when he was 4,

leaving him with a skull fracture. Then at age 12 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and after several surgeries, a series of seizures sent him into a coma. After that he didn’t speak and barely moved for a year. As he was on the long road of recovery from that time, a friend of a friend made a connection for him to visit his favorite NFL team, San Diego Chargers, and in 1985 he went out to California to visit their practice.
On his visit he was in a wheelchair and could barely lift his hand to give the players a high five. But he decided the next time he came to see the team he would walk across the field. Joey came home with a will to live, and sure enough in 1986 he returned to the Chargers and walked across that field. The whole team stopped and cheered. And that was the footage Dana found eight years into her filmmaking.

Joey first met San Diego Chargers player Lionel James in 1985 and 1986.
Perhaps all the more notable plot point from those Chargers visits was the lifelong friendship Joey began with Chargers player Lionel James, a 5-foot, 6-inch running back who had shared the backfield with Bo Jackson when he played for Auburn. As fate would have it, Lionel’s brother got hit by a car when he was 8 years old and had to learn to walk again. “That’s tough when you see
56 November/December 2021
the frustration on people’s faces and they are trying say something and do something and they can’t do it,” Lionel notes. “I saw a lot of my family in (Joey’s) family.” It was Lionel who had challenged Joey to come back in 1986, and Lionel credits Joey for inspiring his own then-NFL season records for receiving yards by a running back and all-purpose yardage
in 1985. “He did more for me than I ever did for him,” Lionel says. Dana’s documentary comes full circle with its footage of Lionel and Joey 35 years after their first meeting as they both speak at a prison ministry together. “I want incarcerated people to know that even if they have done the worst crime, they can be forgiven,” Joey says on the film. Dana thought that moment might have been the ending of her movie, but little did she know when
they filmed that scene that a worldwide pandemic would come, making grocery store workers frontline heroes. That was when she found her ending and began to wrap up the project. Today the film is in the final parts of the production process, and Dana and her team are fundraising to bring the film—which Dana refers to as her “fourth child”— to completion and pay for post-production costs through a partnership with a local nonprofit, the United for Life Foundation.

Joey fistbumps with Lionel.
It’s Joey’s hope that the film restores lost faith for people and helps other families going through hard things as his family did, and Dana would love for it to be shown at film festivals where Joey could be a part of panels after showings. Joey and his family saw the finalized 57 minutes of the film for the first time this summer at Joey’s 50th birthday party, and “you could hear a pin drop,” Dana says. “They were laughing and crying, and they came up afterward with blood shot eyes.” They weren’t the only ones either. “I still cry watching it,” Dana says. “I cry every time.”

The Great Carolina Outdoors Hike, bike and adventure at these three resorts in the new year. By Christiana Roussel | Photos Contributed
Once the holidays are in our collective rearview mirror, most of us look at the new year as a fresh start—a time to refresh, set new goals, and embrace new habits. We vow to eat better, exercise more and maybe indulge a little less. With those goals in mind, why not ease into things with a vacation geared to healthier habits? After all, there’s no rule saying that these mindful changes have to be monastic or arduous or even not fun. With a vacation to any one of these resorts, you might just fall in love with being the healthiest version of yourself. 60 November/December 2021
choose-your-own
Lowcountry Adventure Palmetto Bluff | Bluffton, South Carolina Situated on the bucolic South Carolina coast, Palmetto Bluff is a destination that combines worldclass hospitality with impeccable cuisine, set against a backdrop of Spanish moss-laden trees, sandy walkways and plough mud teeming with activity. Guests at the resort can choose to stay at the signature Montage Resort on property or at one of the private homes available. No matter where you lay your head at night, you’ll be ensconced in comfort and graceful hospitality, ensuring you’re plenty rested for days filled with outdoor adventure.
Getting There Hopping a flight to Savannah is the fastest way to get to the Lowcountry, but there are plenty of guests who opt to drive. From the airport, it is a quick car ride to the resort.

HIT THE ROAD
What To Do Honestly, there are not enough hours in the day to explore everything Palmetto Bluff has to offer, but we suggest you try. Start by picking up complimentary bicycles and Bike the Bluff—a 6-7-mile ride through Palmetto Bluff’s 20,000 acres including historic architecture, wildlife and views of the May River—just to get the lay of the land. From there, you may decide to hike, shoot sporting clays, swim, play tennis, paddleboard, fish, canoe, ride horses, play golf or go boating. Or maybe this is the vacation where you try something totally new—pickleball. As the fastest growing sport in the world, there are pickleball courts popping up in cities from coast to coast. Easy for beginners to learn, fast-paced and fun, the pickleball “addiction” is being embraced across generations. Six pickleball courts at Palmetto Bluff’s Wilson Lawn and Racquet Club make this the ideal spot to give it a go.
Where To Eat All of that exertion is bound to spark a strong appetite. On property, there are numerous dining options, from casual to white tablecloth, to satiate yourself. The town of Bluffton certainly merits a visit if you are in the area, and dining at FARM might be the best reason of all. Chef Brandon Carter uses fresh blue crab, hand-picked by local Gullah women at the nearby Bluffton Oyster Company, in his blue crab rice dish (pictured on right). Anson Mills rice provides the base for this dish while sofrito and fried shallots round out its savoriness.

Hiking Among the Smokies
The Swag | Waynesville, North Carolina Named for the space between two mountains, The Swag resort’s 250-acres nestle up against the Great Smoky Mountains in westernmost North Carolina, making it the perfect getaway for hikers and families who enjoy intergenerational active travel. This mountaintop idyll began as a private getaway for Deener and Dan Matthews, a couple who enjoyed hosting friends from nearby Knoxville. In 2018, The Swag was purchased by Annie and David Colquitt, who had honeymooned at The Swag and fallen in love with the destination. The Colquitts’ adoration is apparent in the very thoughtful updates they’ve added since taking the helm—a cozy spa, more lawn games, outdoor patio dining and an experts-in-residence program.
Getting There The journey to The Swag is almost as lovely as the destination itself. From Birmingham, you can either go through Atlanta and head north, or skip that inevitable traffic and go through Chattanooga and Knoxville, a far prettier and less snarled drive for sure. Make sure you savor the final part of the journey up The Swag’s driveway. It is fun to watch the thermometer on your car drop several degrees as you traverse the switchbacks to reach the resort. The resort operates mid-April to Thanksgiving.

HIT THE ROAD
What To Do At the core of The Swag is rest. For some, this looks like solo hikes out to beloved knobs with epic views. For others, it means stashing the cell phone and laptop for days on end, reconnecting with family and making new friends in fellow travelers. Badminton, croquet, horseback riding and plenty of swanky Stave puzzles round out the offerings which only serve to switch off the digital brain, resetting your mental bandwidth. Picnics are happily packed for those wishing to be off exploring for the day, and the only traffic jam you’ll find is at the multitude of hummingbird feeders that dot the expansive porch. Another popular activity at The Swag are naturally intimate weddings held out on Gooseberry Knob. Some weddings have even been so small as to necessitate the asking of the innkeeper to serve as witness to the union. Full buyouts of the resort for a wedding, anniversary or family reunion can make any occasion that much more private and special.
Where To Eat The Swag is truly a destination away from it all and as an all-inclusive resort your stay includes all meals, which can be enjoyed family style with other guests (a fantastic way to make new friends) or at private tables. “Social Hour” precedes dinner each evening, allowing guests to mingle in a treasured and convivial setting, sharing stories of the day and settling into a relaxed evening.

Cycling Through Europe
(or so it feels)
Hotel Domestique | Traveler’s Rest, South Carolina Named for the racing position professional cyclist George Hincapie held in his Tour de France career, the Hotel Domestique provides an elevated biking experience in a bucolic mountain setting. Located just outside Greenville, South Carolina, the resort has the look and feel of something straight out of the Italian countryside. Tall slender cypress trees line the terrace of the barrel-tiled roof with stucco-façade. The muted palette of the décor is punctuated by a punchy orange which feels richly Mediterranean.
Getting There From Birmingham, take I-20 East to Atlanta and then go north on I-85 toward Greenville. Travelers Rest is located about 30 minutes east of downtown Greenville.
What To Do The main draw for Hotel Domestique is, quite simply, biking. The surrounding area is replete with enough hills and straightaways to engage riders of all skill levels. The Swamp Rabbit Trail in nearby downtown Travelers Rest is a popular trail and easy to navigate. Avid cyclists often arrive with their own bikes, but the hotel has a small fleet to accommodate riders as well. High-end road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes are all available to rent for the day. The front desk has a thick binder, full of area rides, broken down by distance. You may also access local rides online at ridewithgps. com. Guests looking for a local guide should reach out to Justin Creech of Blue Ridge Bike Tours at 864-448-4184. Aside from two-wheeled challenges, Hotel Domestique boasts a serene pool and jacuzzi, perfect for recovering from a ride or just enjoying some much-needed downtime. The fountained terrace and adjacent firepit make ideal settings for an afternoon glass of wine or nightcap. Guest rooms are well-appointed and each comes with a Hypervolt percussion massager, to really get the kinks out after a long bike—or car—ride.

HIT THE ROAD
Where to Eat Restaurant 17 (so named for the number of times George Hincapie competed in the Tour de France) is the hotel’s on-site restaurant where Chef Haydn Shaak’s seasonal menu is as inspired as it is wow-inducing. Guests looking to dine off-site should head to Camp in downtown Greenville, where Chef Drew Erickson is stunning diners with his world-class cuisine that employs techniques garnered working with Chef Thomas Keller in Yountville, California’s, famous French Laundry. Come hungry and adventurous.

Meet Your Travel Guide Proud to call Birmingham home, Christiana Roussel loves discovering every corner of the Magic City. But the road beckons often. She’s been known to make a wrong turn into the right choice, dig in with the locals and try to talk her way out of a speeding ticket or two. Curiosity drives her and finding connection is her passion.

Health Focus of the Month:
Orthopaedic Exercise: What Type of Workout Program is Best for Me? Crossfit - Zumba - walking - running - swimming - biking - powerlifting - Olympic lifting - yoga - golf - tennis - basketball... So many options! How can you decide what is the optimal workout program for you? From an orthopaedic perspective, the primary endpoint when treating patients is always optimizing function. This is a good criteria for evaluating a workout program. What type of exercise will allow me to optimize my function, perform my activities of daily living most efficiently, and maximize my daily quality of life? While improving your appearance is a motivating factor for most, functional improvement should always be the bottom line. Functional expectations are obviously highly variable. The 17-yearold football player, the 45-year-old business person, and the 73-yearold grandmother will have divergent goals and physical limitations. The exercise program they choose needs to respect these differences. There is no cookie-cutter approach which works for everyone, but there are common themes that each should employ in their plan. Musculoskeletal function is determined by joint flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and neurological function. An optimal workout program should balance each of these facets of function. Flexibility is key for muscular func-
tion. By pre-stretching ity. Neurologic function before loading a musis impacted by nutrition cle, the load to failure is and environmental facincreased by 50%. If you have an arthritic AC joint (shoulder) or cervical disc disease (neck), your strength training should be controlled and slow, avoiding end range loading of the affected joint. Explosive lifts - power cleans, snatches, etc - are a bad idea here. The bottom line is that there is a level of physiologic stress (exercise) which is good for each of us, no matter what our physical limitations may be. Running a marathon may overload your physiologic capacity to the point where you are hospitalized for dehydration, but chronic bedrest will lead to weight gain, osteoporosis, joint stiffness, and muscular atrophy. The ideal level is different for each individual, and your workout should be tailored to your specific needs. Arthritic knees or obesity may not allow you to run a marathon, but they won’t prevent you from walking in a pool or doing water aerobics. So for your ideal exercise program, remember the key ingredients - stretch/strength/endurance/balance - modified by your individual limitations, and never give up. One more thing - HAVE FUN! Camp Out
Oak Mountain State Park My wife, Julie, my son, Jamison, and I love camping and call Oak Mountain State Park our “home campground.” Taking a long hike around one of the lakes and then relaxing by a campfire is a great way to spend the day!
Syrup Please
Shelby Iron Works Park Pancake Breakfasts The park, located on the site of the historic Shelby Iron Company established in 1842, has a monthly pancake breakfast on the first Saturday of every month. While you are there, take a walk around the park and explore local history while experiencing the natural beauty the area is known for.
Red or White
Just a Tish Wine & More Since Just a Tish opened on West College Street in Columbiana in May 2020, it has been a great place to grab a glass of wine and relax with friends before going to a concert at the Shelby County Arts Council’s Black Box Theater, which is right next door. They also have a nice selection of wines by the bottle to take home.
Sunset Spot
Old Mill Square Colonnade Fountain Plaza Boasting a 13-foot-tall custom crafted fountain from Milan, Italy, with 12 water features, the fountain is gorgeous and the view of the sunset from it is amazing. It’s located on the campus of the Shelby County Arts Council, so it’s also a good place to listen to an outdoor concert.
Just the Right Reuben
Davis Drug Snack Bar I am a big fan of Reuben sandwiches, and Davis Drug Snack Bar in historic downtown Columbiana has the best one around.
