T

he most I’ve ever lost from a card game is a few dollars and maybe some pride. But for Robert Regard, featured on the cover with his wife and son, his biggest loss led to the opening of a restaurant. Who else can say that? He made a bet that if he lost his hand, he would fund a Cajun restaurant — and that’s exactly what happened. Robert and his wife, Lulu, brought authentic Louisiana dishes, like jambalaya and gumbo, to Shelby County with Crazy Cajuns’ Boiling Pot. The restaurant is a truly unique neighborhood destination, with eclectic décor like deer heads, Mardi Gras beads and personal items left there by customers. Its ambience is as special as its menu. The couple likes to refer to Crazy Cajuns’ as a “modern-day ‘Cheers’ restaurant.” So the next time you have a craving for some Cajun cuisine, you can head to Inverness Plaza instead of crossing over state lines. See more about the restaurant starting on page 40. You can also read about another unique experience found in here on page 24. Montevallo Main Street Players invites community members to join their troupe to perform drama and comedy plays. The oldest operating communi-

ty theater in the county, Montevallo Main Street Players has performed plays like “The Glass Menagerie,” “The Odd Couple” and “Steel Magnolias.” They have a show set for April that would make for the perfect date night. Something else that has been a local staple is the Greystone Country Club, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. But, the Club hasn’t rested on its laurels: It continues to attract renowned employees and events like the Regions Tradition, while also constructing state-of-the-art buildings. I talked with several people from the Club for this article, and it was evident they were all passionate about their work there — whether they had been there a few years or decades. You can read more about the history and future of the Greystone Country Club on page 18. Have a story idea that we should feature in the magazine? Reach out to me with your suggestions, questions and comments. I’d love to hear from you! l

Tackling Paper

A

nyone who’s earning a paycheck knows the correlation between his or her money and what is owed to Uncle Sam. April 15th is as well known as Dec. 25th in every household. Just like the organization at the holidays with ornaments, gifts and decorations, April has its own special “organization” as we often find ourselves dealing with lots of paper. Paper is one of the biggest areas we struggle with when it comes to organizing and decluttering. Sounds simple, but with paper, the yearly “file purge” entails knowing what to keep, what to toss, what to separate and how to blend old tax returns and new owners manuals. These are general guidelines to give you an idea on how to start the process of clearing out file folders and boxes of legal, financial and personal papers. uSome things should never be thrown away. Birth certificates, social security cards, trust documents, marriage/ divorce/adoption certificates, retirement records, etc. Consider storing your permanent papers in a safety deposit box or fire safe. uBusiness records need permanent storage. Permanent files are needed for financial statements, licenses, corporate documents, receipts, etc. Permanent files should be stored in a separate filing cabinet away from daily action files. uKeep tax records for seven years. Your particular situation will determine the length of time to keep old tax records, anywhere from three years to forever. Tax laws change every year as noted on the IRS website, so the best rule is to consult your accountant or attorney who is familiar with your life situation before throw-

ing anything away. Plastic storage bins with tight fitting lids are a better storage option since plastic protects papers from bugs Lisa Phillips, and humidity. owner of SimpleWorks, u Keep Simpleworks.guru g e n e r a l lisa@simpleworks.guru 205.981.7733 household bills for one year. Non-tax-related papers like bank statements, utility bills, credit card receipts, miscellaneous purchases, etc. do not need to be kept for longer than 12 months. Most will argue that since the majority of statements are online, there is no need to print and store at all. Set up a simple filing system with file folders and labels. u“What do I do with this” category. Common sense plays a big part in hanging on to warranties (keep as long as you own the item), bank deposit slips (until reconciled on your bank statement), insurance policies (keep for the life of the policy), etc. Organization is key. Active, reference and permanent are the three main categories for paper retention for both office and home. Keep active files close at hand, reference papers easily accessible and permanent files clearly labeled and stored in a safe place. Clutter happens when you mix the three and have 2012 tax returns on top of last month’s bank statement in the kitchen. With these few simple tips, you can begin to sort through even the biggest stack of crumbled paper. It’s that simple.l

Pelham High School wrestler wins 6A title When wrestling season began at Pelham High School, senior Hassan Hawthorne knew he wanted to win the state championship. The double amputee wrestler took third in state the previous year and said he wanted to step up on that podium as the 6A champion. Not only did Hawthorne accomplish this ambitious feat, but he also finished his final season with an undefeated record of 37-0 and was named the 6A MVP at the state meet. Although Hawthorne went into the 6A Championship tournament with an undefeated record, he said he didn’t let it put any pressure on him. After witnessing a friend go undefeated last year and then lose it at state, Hawthorne said the record wasn’t on his mind at all. Hawthorne started the match against Trevor Muncey of Gardendale, beating him with an 8-0 decision win. After a 9-3 decision win over Justin Carty of Clay-Chalkville High School, Hawthorne made the semifinals. His win over Landon Thompson of Southside-Gadsden in the finals of the 145-pound class gave Hawthorne claim to the state title via a 7-3 decision. If scholarships or future opportunities become available, Hawthorne said he’d like to continue wrestling.

Miss THS crowned by her sister Heading into the Feb. 20 Miss Thompson High School pageant, last year’s winner, Katie Adams, had some simple advice for her sister, Allie. “I was stressing about it all day, and she told me to chill out, clear my head and just be myself,” Allie said. Although her older sister was the reigning Miss THS, Allie said she originally was somewhat hesitant to enter this year’s pageant. In retrospect, Allie said she was glad she listened to the encouragement of her friends. At the end of the process, Allie became the secondconsecutive member of her family to wear the Miss THS crown.

The day of the pageant, contestants had interview sessions with the pageant’s judges. The girls also answered on-stage interview questions during the event. “My question was ‘What’s the riskiest thing you’ve ever done?’ My answer was ‘Entering the pageant,’” Allie said with a laugh. Allie said she will never forget the feeling she had when she was announced as the overall winner. “I never expected it. I was really surprised and really happy,” Allie said, noting her and her sister both won the pageant their first time entering it. “Getting crowned by my sister was really special.”

his spring brings some exciting performances to the Shelby County Arts Council (SCAC). Returning favorites Emily Herring and Gabriel Tajeu are back and ready to share some new music with Shelby County. On April 23, multi-talented performer Herring returns to the Black Box Theater stage for her spectacular tribute to country legend Patsy Cline. As a veteran of the stage in both regional theater and national tours, Herring has always been a fan favorite at the Shelby County Arts Council. Since performing as Patsy Cline in the musical theater production of “Always...Patsy Cline” in Birmingham in 2011, Herring has been asked numerous times to reprise the role in other venues. “I am so grateful to be returning to the SCAC,” Herring says. “This community is one of my favorites to sing for...especially my Patsy Cline show.” When she isn’t donning the red dress and boots of Patsy Cline, you can find Herring singing with the Birmingham based jazz band, Just Friends, and working on upcoming cabaret shows in Birmingham and New York. One of her most recent performances was several roles in the pre-Broadway workshop and world premier of “The Countess of Storyville” at the University of Alabama. Residents can see her April 23 at her Shelby County Arts Council performance as Patsy Cline. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include a pre-show beverage reception. Local favorite Gabriel Tajeu will also return in April for his new album release party for the folks of Shelby County. With the release of his second album, Tajeu is excited to share with fans new ideas he has been tossing around. “I’ve grown during the years, had new experienc-

es and been excited by more soul and rock music, so it made sense to make this record,” Tajeu says. “I also wanted to give my fans something new to listen to but still familiar.” Tajeu had the opportunity to record part of his record at Muscle Shoals legendary FAME Studios with engineer John Gifford III. Besides recording and sparking interest in the new album, Tajeu has been busy playing gigs around Birmingham such as Workplay, The Nick and The Syndicate Lounge, and he is looking forward to working on new material during the summer. “The Japanese record label, Sweet Soul Records, that distributed my first record is picking up the second record too and is very excited about the record,” Tajeu says. “It’s amazing to know that people all over the world are listening to the music being made right here.” Join Tajeu April 30 at the Black Box Theater for his album release party and show. Opening for Tajeu will be husband and wife folk duo The Matchcoats. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include a preshow beverage reception. Timeless pieces Man builds and repairs antique clocks

C

hecking the time on your clock is an elementary exercise compared to what horologist Stephen Campbell sees when he peers inside any clock. In the late 70s, Campbell, a Bell South employee, began to buy and build clock kits — some from Viking, Emperor and Klockit — and went on to complete some 15 wall clocks, grandfather clocks and four-bell clocks as a hobby. He gained working knowledge of clock mechanisms, such as handling, adjusting and oiling, and by the mid-90s after working alongside another experienced horologist, Bob Hudson, Campbell realized this would be his chosen work after retirement. He spent 25 weeks in Columbia, Penn., studying at the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC) School of Horology, graduating in 2008. “Early on, when I fixed a clock, I would put that money toward the tools I needed, so by the time I retired, my shop was ready to go.”

Campbell shared the most frequent problem he encounters with fine or antique clocks is that they have dried out. “A clock is always trying to push itself apart; the gears spread and then lack the energy to tick,” he explains. “Signs of wear are also evident on the bushings, so this is one of the first elements I look at.” The oldest clock Campbell has worked on is a tall grandfather clock that belonged to George Washington’s brother and is currently in the Karl C. Harrison Columbiana Museum. Campbell has also worked on an English-made clock dating from 1860 that has only been moved three times since it was built. It arrived at the Port of Mobile on a sailing ship and was brought to its Verbina home in a mule-drawn wagon. “The most challenging clock to work on is a three-train clock,” Campbell says, noting that each train has four to six individual gears. Frequently, when working on a grandfather clock, he removes the movement and brings it to

the shop. “I will transport a grandfather clock when someone is moving, making it ready for its new home. I am called upon often when movers damage clocks,” Campbell says. “When it comes to the more artistic elements, for example repainting the clock face or refinishing the wood, I use the services of Moman & Son, who do stunning woodwork and The Dial Shop for the faces.”

Campbell belongs to the NAWCC local Chapter 54 that holds a monthly program at the Irondale Café. “Sometimes, we have show and tell, and someone will share something wonderful they found at a yard sale,” he says. “I’m probably one of the youngest there. Sadly, we lose a couple of members every year.” Stephen Campbell can be contacted at 205-6632822. l

hen someone pulls up a seat to a Christian puppet show, they may expect to be introduced to Moses or perhaps even Jonah and the whale. You probably wouldn’t expect to encounter The Beatles, birds that loudly caw and guys with orange skin and vibrant blue hair. These characters, and black lights, are all part of the show viewers get from Stepp Up, North Shelby Baptist Church’s puppet ministry. “I absolutely adore it,” says Sarah Roland, a member and senior at Chelsea High School. “It’s really amazing to see the kids’ faces light up when they see the puppets.” Former director Anita Hardy says children don’t see puppets a lot, so the extra movement and color grabs their attention.

“The songs and skits they do could be talking about everyday things but refer back to Biblical lessons,” Hardy says. “For a child, this may help them pay a little more attention and let the message sink in more than it might through other methods.” Roland says it can be hard to explain to a young child how there was a man who died for them. “They can’t fully understand that,” Roland says. “They can understand that someone really loved them and would do anything for them. They also can always get a song stuck in their head that means something to them and have that stay with them all of their lives.” Roland found her way to Stepp Up as a sixth grader. She’s relished working with the other students to decide what songs to use and what images should accompany them, she says. They use renditions of songs like “Here Comes

the Sun,” changed to “Here Comes God’s Son,” or “Praise and Shout,” instead of “Twist and Shout.” They’ve coated puppets in black-light paint and built specialized sets, as well. Roland says she’s always enjoyed putting together the presentations, but when she heard the profound testimony of a speaker from Africa, her devotion to the ministry solidified. “He was in a place where you weren’t even allowed to know who Jesus was,” Roland says. “Yet, he snuck out with his friends – lying to his father – to go see a puppet show because he had heard of the message of love the missionaries were teaching. Hearing a story like that, how could you not want to be a part of a ministry like this?” North Shelby Baptist Church’s puppet ministry launched about a decade ago, winning numerous competitions since. Typically, a group of 10 to 20 students participate, which means a very boisterous room of 11 to 18 year olds for someone to organize and direct.

Martha Miller joyfully took on the task of supervising the ministry about a year ago. “I’m proud of how it has lasted because of the kids’ passion to share the word in a fun way,” Miller says. “I definitely did not want to see the program go away.” Miller carries a very personal tie to Stepp Up. Her son, Jake, spent several years as a member of the program, spreading the word of God through this unique form of faith and theater. After he passed away in a car wreck at age 19, the youth in Stepp Up chose to name one of the black light puppets in his honor. “I love the closeness of the group because it really allows you to get to know the kids,” Miller says. “It’s interesting to see their perspective on things. Sometimes, you don’t realize how deep their understanding of things or their faith really is.” According to Roland, Jake is the one who originally came up with the name Stepp Up. An anagram of the word puppets, it is supposed

to represent how youth in the ministry step up for God by spreading his word. Performances then take place throughout the year at the North Shelby and Chelsea libraries, nursing homes and as part of a special Easter Egg Hunt for visually impaired children. “This puppet show is what really makes the year for me. We come from behind the stage and let the kids touch the puppets,” Roland says. “When I really thought about the fact that we were giving a puppet show for blind kids, who can’t see what we are doing but are still so engaged in the story, that’s when I realized this ministry can truly reach anyone.” l

Quarter Century Greystone Golf & Country Club celebrates milestone anniversary

Story by LAUREN DOWDLE Photos By DAWN HARRISON

T

here’s so much more to the Greystone Golf & Country Club than its renowned golf courses, which is just one of the reasons the Club continues to thrive after a quarter century. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Club’s leadership took some time to look back at its rich history — and it’s definitely come a long way. When the Club opened in 1991, it originally was Greystone Golf Club and was strictly a men’s golf club. But as the demand for a wider range of activities increased, it became the Greystone Golf & Country Club, says Ashley Fuentes, membership director. Now, the Club has 760 members. “During the years, Greystone has transformed into a family club,” says David Porter, who has been the general manager since April 2015. Since the first round of golf was played on the lush greens, Greystone has constantly evolved and added new facilities for their members to enjoy.

Most recently, Greystone’s new restaurant will open its doors on the lower level of the Founders Clubhouse in April. “We’re excited to open the restaurant six days a week and offer contemporary country club cuisine,” Porter says. The Club also expanded its fitness center in late 2015 to 4,000 square feet. Members now have 24/7 access to the facility, which includes a variety of innovative equipment, a large energized group fitness room, massage therapy/treatment rooms and indoor and outdoor lounge areas. They also debuted their new Golf Performance Center in 2015. This 2,500-square-foot space has three teaching bays with high-definition live streaming video, 3D motion capture, a golf gym and more. Mark Blackburn, Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teacher in America, coaches beginners to PGA Tour professions in the Greystone Golf Performance Center. The Club’s transformation during the years has also included building a tennis center with 14 courts, three swimming pools, two clubhouses

with dining, space for social events and going from an 18-hole course to a 36-hole club with two courses, says Fuentes, who has been with the Club since November 2003. But these new facilities aren’t the only things gaining national attention. The Club has also held several well-known golf events during the years. Greystone hosted the Bruno’s Memorial Classic for 14 years, ending in 2005, and the players voted the Club as the No. 1 stop on the Champions Tour two of those years. Now, Greystone is preparing for the Regions Tradition, which will take place at the Founders Course May 18-22. They will also host the event in 2017 and 2018. “We’re excited to again partner with the Champions Tour and bring the tournament back home to Greystone,” says Steve Smith, director of golf, who has been with the Club since April 1996. The Club has also seen several famous faces during the years, from celebrities and athletes to distinguished political figures. “Adam Sandler came to Greystone and showed us his Billy Madison golf swing — kidding, but he did enjoy a round at Greystone,” Steve says. “Condoleezza Rice and Michael Jordan 20 | ShelbyLiving.com

are just a couple of the distinguished members who make up Greystone’s prestigious roster.” Bob Hope also hosted the first Bruno’s Memorial Classic at Greystone in 1992. “People can expect Greystone to be one of the top clubs in the country,” Porter says. “Members can expect second-to-none services and events. As the Club grows and we reach 1,000 members, we will look at more projects such as a state-of-the-art aquatics center.” Just as important as keeping the Club at a high

level is the staff’s dedication to its members. “We are thankful to be a part of our members’ family traditions throughout the years,” Fuentes says. “It’s a pleasure watching our members’ families and children grow and develop. We are also thankful to be a part of a growing, dynamic club that is progressing daily.” In 2009, the members purchased the Club from Daniel Corporation. “We are a memberowned club, which allows members open access and input in the direction of the club,” says Terry Smith, club president. It really is all about building those relationships and the personal aspect of being a part of the Club. “My favorite part about working with the club is meeting new people,” Terry says. “Our members are active, engaging people from across the country and of varied, interesting backgrounds. In a time where a genuine local community is hard to find, we have it here at Greystone.”

We also hosted my son’s wedding rehearsal dinner at Greystone.” After a quarter century of innovative additions, it’s exciting to see where the Club will be in another 25. “The Club is the cornerstone of the 1,350 home gated community,” Porter says. “We’re proud to say that we are a progressive, dynamic and growing Club.” For more information on the Greystone Golf & Country Club, visit Greystonecc.com. l

teve Gilbert never really meant to end up on stage, but it happened anyway. He did it willingly. I mean — who can resist the opportunity to slam doors, bang pieces of metal together and hit wooden blocks against each other? Gilbert sure couldn’t. “It was an original show called ‘The Tubes Glow in the Dark,’ a stage adaptation of some old radio shows,” he says. “Montevallo Main Street Players performed the drama on stage with live sound effects, and I created those live on stage for the radio drama. I got to do things like use a pair of shoes to create walking sounds, ring an

old telephone and create a lot of noises.” For the most part, that’s where his stage experience begins and ends, he said. “Otherwise, I like staying behind the curtain.” But he loves his involvement with Montevallo Main Street Players so much that he can’t seem to stop being a part — he hasn’t been able to ever since he was first recruited to help with technical needs about a decade ago. “I had a friend who was on the board of directors who came to me and said they needed someone with technical experience,” Gilbert recalls. The next thing he knew, he was the board’s

vice president and then president. It’s such a fun part of the community that it kind of tends to rope you in, Gilbert says. “I think it exposes the community to a lot of different aspects of theater and offers a lot of ways to get involved,” he says. If you’re an actor, great — but if not, there are props, sound, set building and a whole host of other things, he adds. “We are a very hands-on organization,” Gilbert says. “We try to get members of the community involved and have open auditions for all of our shows.” Montevallo Main Street Players, which was founded in 1971, is the oldest operating community theater in Shelby County and has had community at its core since day one. The group has done plays in homes, on the campus of the University of Montevallo, in the old depot and at the Strand Theatre on Montevallo’s Main Street. It currently calls the Parnell Memorial Library’s theater home. “It’s a fantastic organization,” says Elaine Hughes, one of two surviving founding members of the group. It started as a way to unify the community during the time when integration was happening, she explains. The group came together to do a play involving leaders in different parts of the community, and it was not only successful, but it was “so much fun that we decided to keep doing it.” And the county’s first community theater group was born. “It was galvanizing for the creative community and the community in general,” Hughes says. “It brought everyone together. Everyone enjoyed it.” They did more and more shows — and haven’t stopped. They have traditionally done three shows a year, and this year is no exception. The group’s spring show, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” is set for April 15-17 and 22-24, with Friday and Saturday evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. An adaptation of George Orwell’s “1984” currently is set for October, and another radio show is in the works for the summer production. “We try to have a blend of classic plays, as well as a blend of musicals and comedies,” Gilbert says. “And we try to pick shows with a cast of different age groups and include people who have never been on stage before but maybe have that April 2016 | 27

Calera schools recognize students and staff on social media

croll down Calera High School’s Facebook page, and you’ll notice almost every post is followed by a hashtag: #whatyoudomatters, #eagleseverrising or #thankyouthursday. Those aren’t just random phrases — they’re part of the high school’s social media campaign, intended to bring positive attention to the accomplishments and goals of students, faculty and members of the Calera educational community, says Calera High Principal Joel Dixon. “It was originally intended to be a tagline at the end of each day’s announcements. I started tagging posts about service projects and kids doing the right things on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #whatyoudomatters. Then it just took off,” he says. “The #thankyouthursday is just 30 | ShelbyLiving.com

an opportunity to recognize kids and teachers who go the extra mile in some way, big or small, that positively impacts those around us. This idea was much more of an intentional effort geared toward social media after seeing the success of #whatyoudomatters.” The hashtag #eagleseverrising marks specific accomplishments or events, such as a reception for new Calera High football coach Andrew Zow or a photo of Calera students who won ribbons at the Special Olympics. “(The campaign) is about positive messaging. With the current political climate, it seems that schools, teachers and students are too often under attack from both sides,” Dixon explains. “While I’ve never met a teacher that doesn’t see a need to continue to grow personally and professionally and to find new ways to reach kids, it’s easy

Dixon and one other teacher have access to the Facebook page, but they field information, stories and photos from all across the school community. They highlight service projects, campus beautification efforts and athletic and academic successes, but “it’s also about smaller, less seen things. The daily choices that lead to those big successes,” Dixon says. The students and faculty have “really bought into” the campaign, he adds. “I hear kids saying it to one another — sometimes seriously and sometimes tongue-in-cheek — but they’re echoing such an important message that can help them the rest of their lives,” he says. “It really is the one thing — whatever your level of ability is, what you do with it is what shapes the course of your life — it’s what matters. I look forward to seeing kids work up through our feeder schools with this message ingrained early on.” The social media campaign is across all of Calera’s four schools — Calera Elementary, Calera Intermediate, Calera Middle and the high school. “It’s everywhere at all four schools. Daily announcements, wall signs, agenda books. It’s everywhere,” Dixon says. Dixon intends to make sure he keeps those hashtags — and all of the things they represent — in mind as he continues to lead Calera High School. “The #whatyoudomatters slogan, as well as #thankfulthursday, begin with me. They are reminders of all our impact, responsibility and efforts,” he says. To check out the posts, visit @CaleraHigh on Twitter or Facebook.com/CaHSeagles. l

Maximize Options Four ways to get the most from your urgent care Story by STEPHANIE HOLDERBY

T

he opening of the St. Vincent’s Urgent Care center just off U.S. Highway 280 provides new options for area residents to receive non-emergency, walk-in care from St. Vincent’s Health System. Conceived as an after-hours center, this new addition to the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen campus is open 1 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Although urgent care has become a familiar concept to most area residents, many people don’t fully understand the best way to utilize these facilities. Here are four suggestions for maximizing urgent care usage: 1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLACE. Some patients head to emergency rooms for sore throats, minor cuts that may need stitches and other minor injuries and illnesses that are best treated in a primary care office or urgent care location after-hours. These patients will usually pay more and wait longer for emergency room treatment than they would have in a walk-in urgent care facility. Of course, if you suspect a threat to life or limb, your destination should always be the hospital emergency room.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CARE. St. Vincent’s Urgent Care has been designed to address the concerns primary care doctors’ offices accommodate. Those might include respiratory-related infections, tummy troubles or minor injuries. Although doctors’ offices are ideal for such care, they aren’t always open. And by the time a patient recognizes their need and makes a call, the office may be booked. And while St. Vincent’s Urgent Care is designed to address immediate concerns, it will also provide access to the entire St. Vincent’s physicians’ network, connecting patients with chronic conditions to primary or specialty care physicians who can help manage those concerns.

information for physicians. 4. CHOOSE TO BE INFORMED.

As walk-in medical offices open on virtually every street corner, it’s important to know that not every immediate care facility is the same. St. Vincent’s Urgent Care is an extension of St. Vincent’s Health System. In view of that longstanding reputation, this facility not only includes certified laboratories and diagnostics capabilities, ranging from x-rays to EKG, but is also accredited by the Urgent Care Association of America, the industry’s trade association that evaluates scope 3. Massage therapy is much more than relaxation Story by SAMANTHA HURST Photos By SPA ONE NINETEEN AND CONTRIBUTED

tretching, twisting and scrunching are just some of the everyday movements that can crimp our muscles — and sometimes those kinks stick. But a daydream of a room scented with essential oils, lights dimmed and soft music wafting in the air isn’t always enough to loosen those knots. Cindy Ritchie of Birmingham realized she needed more than pampering 25 years ago and found her way to massage therapy. “I have a very high-pressure job, so it really does help relieve tension,” Ritchie says. “It’s for everything: It’s for your sanity, it’s for your physical comfort and it’s really for your overall health.” Ritchie’s massage therapist is Liz Henry at Azia Medical Spa. “I try and make it more about wellness and not about pampering someone and pushing them out,” Henry says. “I’ve had clients who didn’t get to the hot towel because I spent more time on their actual issues.” Henry explained educating her clients on the various techniques plays a crucial role in their

overall experiences. That mantra is echoed at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Director of Health and Wellness Services Jacqueline Gardner says St. Vincent’s spa connects patients to massage services as an extension of the center’s physical therapy program, as well as a method of relaxation. “We see wellness as an integrated approach,” Gardner says. “Our massage therapists work closely with our physical therapists and clients to create care plans that continue the healing process.” Spa One Nineteen massage therapist Kevin Pitts says there is so much more to what a welleducated therapist can do for his or her client. “As an industry, we haven’t done a good job educating the public on what massage therapists do,” Pitts says. If someone really loves the hot towels and an hour of quiet, Pitts encourages them to book a session and relax. For some individuals, especially those living with chronic pain, the benefits could exceed the simple escape from reality. The Mayo Clinic reports massage therapy effectively reduces

stress, pain and muscle tension in some patients. The most common ailments seen by these massage therapists involve head, neck and shoulder issues. Everyday life impacts these areas tremendously because individuals don’t have correct posture or don’t understand the strain they place on their muscles. Pitts says we all ask more of our bodies than they can sometimes give. “What we want to do is get the soft tissue, the muscles and back to a more normal resting length,” Pitts says. “Then, the posture can improve, and getting the body to release all the built-up acids and proteins overall makes the client feel better.” Clients often express pain in one area, but the issue stems from an injury to another part of the body, Henry adds. For example, she’s had patients complain about their shoulders only to later understand they had twisted their lower back earlier in the week. “A massage therapist wouldn’t figure that out unless they took the time to ask the right questions,” Henry says. Additional studies show massage therapy could be beneficial for a litany of ailments from anxiety

MAXIMIZE YOUR EXPERIENCE u Be honest if you want to be pampered. u Mention trouble points or injuries you’ve experienced. u Clearly communicate any serious medical conditions. u Tell your massage therapist if something is painful. u Drink plenty of water after your massage.

COMMON TYPES OF MASSAGES u Swedish massage is a technique typically most recognized for luxury that involves long strokes, kneading and deep circular movements to relax you. u Deep massage focuses more specifically on working with injured muscles, and it uses more forceful, slower motions to reach deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. u Sports massage aims to help prevent or treat injuries for athletes prone to overworking muscles. u Trigger-point massage targets areas of strained clusters of muscle fibers that can tighten after injuries or misuse.

to digestive disorders to Fibromyalgia. Ritchie has relied on massage therapy to improve pain and illness. She’s leaned on it after a serious car wreck and during a bout with Epstein–Barr, the virus that causes mono. “My lymph nodes and my spleen get really swollen,” Ritchie says. “The therapy she [Henry] does helps to relieve my body of some of the built up toxins and a lot of times she’s able to alleviate some of the swelling.” Therapists like Pitts caution improvements for chronic health concerns have not been proven to always occur. “It can be misleading for someone to claim they can cure someone’s problem,” Pitts says. “What we can do is help them deal with their pain and tension.” People who work desks jobs and people who work out intensely can also benefit, Henry says. Some clients can experience initial soreness after a massage, but massage therapy should never be painful, both Pitts and Henry explain. Henry encourages clients to let her know if something hurts, especially during a deep tissue Couples can even receive massages together at Spa One Nineteen.

massage. She also says it is important for clients to drink plenty of water after a massage. If you get a massage and are sore for two or more days, you should call your massage therapist. There are some medical conditions for which doctors would not recommend massage therapy. Pitts says anyone with a serious illness or medical condition should consult with their doctor before scheduling a massage. There are, however, misconceptions about massage therapy during pregnancy. While women should seek their doctors’ advice, Henry says massages can be a tremendous tension release for women who are expecting. Releasing tension, for themselves and others, is why both Pitts and Henry got into this career field. “I was the one growing up who always offered to give my older relatives a shoulder rub. I finally realized that this was a job I could wake up every morning being excited to go to,” Henry says. “It feels so good to have someone come off your table who struggled to move before. It is great to know you can help someone in that way.” l Customers can also receive massage facials at Spa One Nineteen.

Boiling pot Crazy Cajuns brings authentic tastes and a neighborhood atmosphere Story by AMY JONES Photos by DAWN HARRISON

t all started with a card game. About 20 years ago, Robert Regard and a group of friends were playing cards together when a crazy bet was made. “It was sort of a card game gone bad,” Robert laughs. The group was all from Louisiana, and they were discussing how there was nowhere to find Cajun food in Birmingham. And so

a bet was made that if Robert lost, he would have to put up the money for a Cajun restaurant and another of the guys would run it. As fate would have it, Robert lost the hand, and soon after, Crazy Cajuns’ Boiling Pot was opened. When the other guy moved out of town four months later, Robert, formerly in the roofing business, stepped in and hasn’t looked back.

It wouldn’t truly be a Cajun restaurant without some mouthwatering crawfish.

Growing up, Robert’s grandmother had taught him how to make such classic Cajun dishes such as gumbo, etouffee and jambalaya, so he brought these to the menu. And the community warmly welcomed the new eatery. “They loved it,” Robert says. “There was nowhere to eat authentic Cajun food here in Birmingham. And they fell in love with the food, plus it’s a fun place to come. We’ve got outdoor seating, which a lot of people like to sit outdoors here in Birmingham. It’s a neighborhood restaurant. When you walk in, many times, people know each other. It’s like a modern-day ‘Cheers’ restaurant.” He and his wife, Lulu, enjoy how much the customers have embraced Crazy Cajuns’. In fact, many of the items that hang on the walls were brought in by their customers. From deer heads and stuffed animals to Mardi Gras beads, people have decorated the neighborhood spot with their

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

DEIDRE DOWNS GUNN “The community and people of Shelby County have always been so welcoming.”

D

eidre Downs Gunn traded in her pageant gowns for scrubs — and she’s loved every moment of it. A Pelham High School graduate, Gunn was named Miss America in 2005. She is now a physician at UAB pursuing subspecialty training as a fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She will be joining the faculty as a reproductive endocrinologist in 2017. Gunn also stays busy with her 6-year-old son Jack.

Photograph CONTRIBUTED What have you been up to since winning Miss America? After I completed my year of service as Miss America, I returned to Birmingham and went to medical school at the UAB School of Medicine, where I graduated with my MD in 2010. I completed a four-year residency program in obstetrics and gynecology in 2014, followed by a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, which I will finish in 2017. How has Miss America helped you? First and foremost, Miss America paid for almost all of my medical education. I received nearly $110,000 in scholarship money during the five years I competed in the Miss Alabama/ Miss America scholarship program. Because of the program’s emphasis on communication and interview skills, I gained extensive experience in public speaking and learned to communicate with people of all different backgrounds, 82 | ShelbyLiving.com

which is a skill I use every day when I see patients. What attracted you to a career in medicine? I was in a car accident in high school, and going through two surgeries and rehab sparked my interest in the medical field. Medicine is a career that combines the intellectual challenge of science with the human element of caring for patients and making a difference in people’s lives. It’s an incredibly demanding career, but I love it, and it makes me excited to wake up every day and go to work. What’s your favorite part about your job? One of the most rewarding things about my job is helping a couple with infertility to get pregnant. How do you think having a Shelby County education helped you? I received an excellent education at

Pelham High School and was able to take a range of Advanced Placement courses that prepared me for my first two years at the University of Virginia, where I was an Echols Scholar, and then Samford University, where I graduated in 2002 and was then named a Rhodes Scholar finalist. What do you love about Shelby County? The community and people of Shelby County have always been so welcoming. It is a great place to raise a family and gave me a wonderful foundation for success in college and beyond. Do you have any hobbies? I love reading, traveling and I recently bought a bike and have enjoyed riding around Birmingham. What’s something most people don’t know about you? My mother is a principal in Shelby County at Calera Intermediate School. l
