FROM THE EDITOR

A

couple’s wedding day represents one of the most special times in their new life together. The day a bride meets her groom at the altar to cement their relationship in marriage is cause for celebration, of course. But the day a woman meets the man who will one day become her husband, to me, is well worth celebrating, too. Who doesn’t love a great how-we-met story, followed by a sweet proposal? While working on this issue and our annual Bride Guide, I enjoyed reading local couples’ accounts of how they first met each other, how they started dating and the details that made up their wedding day. As you look through the bridal special section, you’ll get a glimpse of beautiful event venues in Shelby County. You can also find information about wedding dresses, cakes and beauty treatments available in the area. Lauren Dowdle talked to Carol Riney,

owner of Bella’s Bridal & Formal in Hoover, and Amber Revis, assistant manager at Bella Couture in Mt Laurel, about dress trends brides will see as they look for their ideal gown. For local brides, lace continues to top the must-have list, and sleeves are starting to become popular. Brides are still passing up bright white dresses for light gold, pink and ivory tones instead. An interesting trend has taken hold with wedding cakes. Many brides are choosing simplicity over elegance, opting for “naked” or “semi-naked” cakes feature minimal exterior icing. Some grooms are choosing different desserts, such as cheesecakes or pies, instead of traditional cakes for their table. You can read more about these and other trends, including beauty treatments for brides, in the bridal section. Don’t put the magazine down without reading the other features in our Arts & Culture and Faith sections. I wish you all a happy New Year! l

THE SIMPLE LIFE

New beginnings

I

n just a few days, we’ll be watching the shiny ball fall on Times Square and we’ll begin (again) to readdress our time, goals, hopes and expectations of a brand new year. Most families will find their calendars bursting with commitments as we kick off 2017. Do you ever wonLisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, der how you do it all? Every year, Simpleworks.guru we say we’re going to change our lisa@simpleworks.guru habits before the next year rolls 205.981.7733 around. We aim to spend less, save more, work less and savor time. But even with the best of intentions, traditions and habits are hard to break. When this keeps us from living that sought-after simple life, it’s time to reexamine the way we live. Poor uses of time. What’s stealing time in your schedule? Is there an app for that, or better yet, is there a current solution you have not investigated? If your commute is getting longer every day, is it time to find another route? Break free from the same routine or decision if you find frustration in it. Could you make a different choice on how you spend your time? Outdated commitments. Take a closer look at your involvement with committees, groups and activities. Is it time for you to step aside and allow someone else to shine? Fresh faces can be good for creativity, the advancement of ideas and often “out-of-the-box” thinking. Bad habits. Don’t know what bad habit(s) you might have? Just ask a close friend, spouse or trusted coworker and chances are the answer will be on the tip of their tongue. Bad habits can waste time and drain your energy. Taking one step in a different direction can awaken a “new” you — a happier you with less stress and a renewed outlook. Hobbies. When a hobby is no longer adding joy to your life, give yourself permission to move on to the next wave of fun. Trends come and go, so be adventurous and step outside your comfort zone to experience a new sport, craft or even a new style of music. Donate or sell the things that have to do with scrapbooking, ice skating, or kayaking to avoid clutter that you’ll have to do something with next month. New Year’s resolutions are evident as we welcome in a new year with anticipation and hope for more time and less clutter. May this year be filled with great moments that turn into lifetime memories for you and your family. It’s that simple. l

Take a closer look at your involvement with committees, groups and activities.

SHORT STORIES

SSCCC gives Diamond Awards The South Shelby Chamber of Commerce Diamond Awards were held Dec. 1 at the American Village in Montevallo. Liz Huntley, author and motivational speaker, shared her life story of overcoming difficult circumstances to reach her potential. Huntley rose above those circumstances and now gives back by advocating for children and education. One person who exhibits the love and service Huntley advocates for is Jane Scott, who was awarded Citizen of the Year at the ceremony. Scott serves as a volunteer in the Hannah Home Auxiliary, where she helps provide care for women who are homeless or fleeing abusive situations. She started volunteering in 2009 while she worked as a bank manager. In 2014, her job was dissolved and she started working more frequently with the Hannah Home. Scott also leads a women’s small group at Church of the Highlands, where she encourages women to experience spiritual freedom. Highlighted awards from the ceremony include Business of the Year for Candlewood Suites of Alabaster, New Business of the Year for Tin Top BBQ of Columbiana, Non-Profit of the Year for Backpack Buddies, Public Servant of the Year for S. Earl Niven Sr. and Ambassador of the Year for Russell Scruggs.

Kids engage in Brain Games Students at Greystone Elementary School discovered how much fun learning can be during Brain Games, a special enrichment week of events held Nov. 14-18. The week kicked off with a special guest speaker, the creator of OSMO and the game apps that go along with it, on Nov. 14. The rest of the week was filled with activities that were both fun and educational. Activities included optical illusions, mosaic making, puzzles, board games and magician tricks. There was even a sheep brain dissection demonstration, which is something students usually do not experience until

CCS holds Medieval Festival High school students at Cornerstone Christian School had the opportunity to immerse themselves in medieval European culture Dec. 13 at the Cornerstone Christian School Medieval Festival. All CCS students in the ninth through 12th grades emulated a day in the lives of people in the Middle Ages to gain a better understanding of the time period. “This is a three-hour attempt to immerse [the students] in what we’ve been learning in class, whether it be English or History, about the Medieval time period,”

later in their school careers. Other guest speakers included a Mount Everest climber, magician and pediatric neurosurgeon. A Parent Game Night Fundraiser from 6-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 17. Giant board games were installed outside the school for Brain Games. On Nov. 16, the school held its annual Turkey Trot run sponsored by the physical education departments. For the Turkey Trot, parents were invited to come run with their children on a course that included hills and obstacles. The school gets involved with Get Moving Alabama, National Run at School Day and the Mercedes Marathon.

CCS history teacher Laurie Porter said. Porter originally organized the school’s Medieval Festival about 16 years ago. When Porter left her position five years ago CCS stopped holding the event. Porter has returned to CCS, so the school has resumed holding the festival. Students dressed in period costumes, emulated medieval etiquette and ate a meal similar to those eaten during medieval times. This year’s sophomore class demonstrated one traditional medieval dance and taught another to all participants.

Pelham police K-9, Bizzy, retires After nine years with the Pelham Police Department, drug detection K-9 Bizzy retired from the force. In November, the city transferred ownership of the K-9 to her handler, Sgt. Steve Johnson. The police department now has two drug detection K-9s, with one possessing tracking capabilities. The full-blood Labrador, who started her career with the Pelham Police Department as a 1 year old, conducted 2,160 searches that resulted in 435 arrests and $1 million in asset forfeitures, said Police Chief Larry Palmer. But Bizzy didn’t only assist the Pelham Police Department. In 2009, Palmer said the PPD was contacted by an interdiction team in Georgia concerning 1,200 pounds of marijuana seized during a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle gave directions to a mini storage business where he picked up the load, but could only tell officers which row of mini storages, not the exact unit, where the drugs were located. Bizzy searched the row of storage units and alerted on a unit. A search warrant was obtained based on Bizzy’s alert, and inside the unit was marijuana and $100,000 in cash. This led to a second search warrant at the suspect’s house where more drugs and more than $100,000 in cash and other assets were recovered. In 2011, the Drug Enforcement Administration utilized Bizzy on a search that resulted in the seizure of more than $300,000 in cash. In April 2015, Bizzy performed her largest drug seizure to date. She was used in two different searches, one vehicle and one mini storage, that resulted in the seizure of 27 kilograms of cocaine. Palmer said Bizzy was an invaluable public relations asset to the city. She has been a popular feature at Youth Government Day in Pelham schools for several years, and has done numerous presentations at the schools.

SHORT STORIES

Kids Christmas shop for their loved ones Meadow View Elementary School third-grader Colby Ewart already had a plan in place to stealthily wrap the presents he had just purchased for his loved ones at the school’s Santa shop on Dec. 2. “I’m going to get some help,” Ewart said when asked if he planned to wrap the gifts himself. “I’m going to get my mom to help me with most of them, but I’m going to get Dad to help me with Mom’s so she doesn’t know what I got her.” In the span of just a few minutes, Ewart found the perfect gifts for his mother, father, sister and brother and proudly showed off his haul after paying for the items. Every MVES student had a chance to go visit the Santa shop, which has become a yearly tradition for the school’s parentteacher organization.

Christmas parade honors fire personnel The 46th annual Helena Christmas parade was held Dec. 3. The theme for this year’s parade was “Put the fire out … Santa’s coming,” as the parade honored the city’s fire department for the outstanding service they provide to Helena residents. The Helena Fire Department trucks, as well as many other surrounding agencies’ trucks and personnel were also involved in the parade. Thousands of residents, families and friends gathered along both sides of Shelby County 261 including the Beanblossum family to enjoy the parade and collect candy. James Beanblossum, along with his wife Darlene and their two daughters, are 10-year residents of Helena who came out to enjoy the parade for the first time. The majority of the floats and vehicles in the parade went along with the “Put the fire out” theme as one sign read, “Don’t worry, Santa! HFD is going to knock that fire out” on the float for the fourth grade Helena cheerleaders. 8 | ShelbyLiving.com

New year of art SCAC to start 2017 with folk art show Story by LINDSAY DYESS Photograph by KEVIN MCKEE

017 welcomes a New Year at the Shelby County Arts Council and with it brings new opportunities to discover some great artists and musicians. The SCAC is dedicated to enriching culture in Shelby County and providing opportunities to local artists and musicians. Kicking off the New Year in the gallery is the annual Fine Folk Art show. This show features some of the best Folk Art around. Each year, artist Teresa Wamble curates the Fine Folk Art show in hopes of bringing some of the most talented artists in the South to light. Their nontraditional style of work makes for an interesting and eclectic body of work. Artists are hand-picked by Wamble for their unique style and perspective. Fiber artist Diana Hiott brings her handcrafted fabric dolls. These dolls feature a variety of styles and bodies, such as bears or rabbits, but have an added element of human characteristics. Retired lawyer-turned-painter Larry Stewart brings his paintings which feature a theme of a funky rooster who wears sunglasses. Artist Mary Ann Casey returns for this show with more of her eclectic “art from the heart” pieces. Marian Bakes draws on memories from her childhood to create vibrant mixed-media pieces. Artist Jim Jones brings his sculptural gourd work featuring a variety of animals and natural elements. Wamble will also show her gourd artwork, which features intricate patterns, imagery and colors. Join us in the SCAC gallery on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. to see this exciting work and meet some of the artists. This opening gallery reception is free and open to the public. The Black Box Theater also welcomes a host of new music for the New Year. On Jan. 21 Will Kimbrough returns with his Nashville tunes. This award winning musician joins us for a night of singer/song-

writer style music in the vein of Leonard Cohen. Regional favorites “2BLU” will open Kimbrough’s show in a new four-piece acoustic format featuring the hand crafted instruments of Jack Dudley. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. Also mark your calendars for Jan. 28. Accomplished jazz musician Ray Reach returns to the stage with singer Lindsey Benedict. These two pack quite a performance! This show features old standards and new favorites and will not disappoint you. Reach and Benedict will perform on Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20. All tickets include a pre-show beverage reception. The Shelby County Arts Council looks forward to another year of sharing great art and music with the people of Shelby County. Consider becoming an SCAC member in 2017 and help us continue to share our passion. For more information on these events, membership or for class information, visit Shelbycountyartscouncil.com. l

What Would Bob Do? Non-profit seeks to continue Bob Green’s charitable efforts Story by EMILY SPARACINO Photographs by CONTRIBUTED

T RIGHT: The late Bob Green, who opened Alabaster Optical and Hearing Aid Service about 40 years ago, was known for his generosity and compassion.

he late Bob Green once said, “If I have money for steak and my neighbor is hungry, we’ll both have hamburgers and be full.” Green, who many people in the Alabaster community knew as the longtime owner of Alabaster Optical and Hearing Aid Service before his death in March 2016, was also a constant supporter of anyone in need of assistance. “My dad was always about giving,” William Green said. “Every little thing that he did meant as much as the next. If somebody needed help, he helped them.” But Bob remained quiet about what he did for people, not wanting attention or praise for the acts of kindness that were second nature to him. “That’s just the way he was,” William said. “He didn’t need people to know he was helping people out.” Since Bob’s death, William, who operates his father’s business now, has spearheaded efforts to continue Bob’s legacy of selfless generosity by es-

tablishing a non-profit organization called What Would Bob Do? “If Bob would do it, then we’re going to figure out a way to do it,” William said. “He was an amazing guy.” William started the paperwork on May 26, Bob’s birthday, and the organization achieved non-profit status in July. Like Bob’s generosity, the organization’s services are not limited to helping people purchase eyeglasses or hearing aids. And William said Alabaster Optical will continue to support the businesses and groups his father had supported, including Calera’s Field of Angels, a non-profit baseball league for children and adults with special needs. In addition, Alabaster Optical has given special cloths for defogging sunglasses to multiple police departments in Shelby County, William said. The business will also continue to provide food for the Alabaster fire and police departments for Thanksgiving and Christmas, something Bob did anonymously.

“They only found out recently that he was doing that,” William said. “It’s not about Alabaster Optical, it’s not about me, it’s about Bob Green.” Donations to What Would Bob Do? are tax-deductible. The needs the organization seeks to meet are immediate needs unable to be fulfilled by other means. Directors evaluate individual, family and organizational needs through an application process.

Those in need may apply or be nominated by someone else. Applications for assistance and donation forms are available at Whatwouldbobdo.org. Donations can also be made online, or by cash or check in person or by mail, to Alabaster Optical & Hearing Aid Service, Attn: What Would Bob Do, 300 1st St. N., Alabaster, AL, 35007. In June, the Alabaster City Council voted unanimously to support naming U.S. 31 between Alabama 119 and the Alabaster-Pelham line as the “Bob Green Memorial Parkway.” The state Legislature will have the final say on renaming the road during its 2017 session. The intent, though, is to let people know Bob’s kindness lives on in the simple question, “What would Bob do?” “I’ve spent all this time since his death thinking of ways to honor him and make him proud,” William said. “I hope everything I do for the rest of my life will be something he would be proud of.” l 12 | ShelbyLiving.com

series. “It was a pleasant ride to Maine,” the chapter begins. “They ate lunch on the way.” Sarah Armstrong stops reading to discuss the book with her second grade class, and Marbutt is one of several who raise their hands to answer questions. Marbutt participates in her class at Westminster School at Oak Mountain virtually—an ongoing battle with cancer prevents her from attending physically because classmates may carry germs that could be especially dangerous to someone with a weakened immune system.

Marbutt was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on June 20. Among the family’s worries was how she would keep up with her schoolwork. “When she was diagnosed, I didn’t know what the school year would look like,” Jennifer Marbutt said. Prior to the first day of school, Kathryn’s father Jonathan, who is a software engineer, researched video conferencing set-ups and discussed them with school officials. On the first day of school Aug. 9, there was Kathryn, ready to learn. “It’s been amazing how well it has worked,” Kathryn’s mother, Jennifer Marbutt, said and lauded Westminster administrators and faculty for their willingness to accommodate her daughter. “She does everything they do. They make every effort to include her in everything. She’s been able to keep up with her friends and meet new people in her class. She hasn’t missed a beat.

“I was worried about her feeling isolated, but she has really felt like she is a part of the class.” During school, Marbutt sits in front of a computer in her family’s dining room at their home in the Highland Lakes subdivision. She is able to see and hear Armstrong and classmates, who interact with her throughout the day and include her in activities, such as when the students split off into pairs for snack time chit-chat. In the classroom, a monitor that provides video and audio feed of Marbutt is placed on top her desk, complete with her name tag across the front. Kathryn Marbutt said reading is her favorite part of the school day, when her classmates huddle around her computer in the back of the classroom. “I just really like to read, and I like books,” Kathryn said. On the second day of school, all second graders came into Armstrong’s classroom to see Kathryn. “We let Kathryn lead a little bit of conversation time,” Armstrong Marbutt said about discussions that included her treatment and why she could not be at school. “I clarified for the kids that this isn’t something you can catch. Normally, when you stay home from school, it’s because you have something someone else can catch. With Kathryn, it’s the opposite.” Armstrong said her students adjusted to the arrangement the first couple of weeks. “Now, she is literally just one of the kids in the class,” Armstrong said. “There is nothing out of the ordinary about it to [the students]. There’s a little ding when she logs on to her computer, and the kids will turn around and say hi. Then, they turn around and get back to work. It’s like they’re greeting their friend who just walked in the door.” l January 2017 | 15

Know before you go When flu season hits, St. Vincent’s Urgent Care is there Story by STEPHANIE HOLDERBY Photograph CONTRIBUTED

T

he beginning of a new year is an exciting time. You want to start the year off on the right foot by planning resolutions to cut back on sweets and hit the gym each week, but sometimes flu season has other plans. The symptoms can hit out of nowhere, and it’s especially important if you suspect you have the flu to see a doctor as soon as possible in order to begin medication that can help lessen the severity and length of symptoms. Luckily, the St. Vincent’s Urgent Care on the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen campus is open after hours and on the weekends to help fill the gap when you and your family need medical care fast, outside of the typical physicians’ office hours. In an effort to make these services as convenient as possible for you, we’re now also offering online check-in for urgent care at Stvurgentcare.com. When you check in online, you’ll get a confirmation notice alerting you to when you can expect to be seen by a physician. This allows you to wait in the comfort of your own home for longer when you’re not feeling well. While we do see a lot of cold and flu patients this time of year, the physicians at St. Vincent’s Urgent Care are ready to treat a wide variety of ailments such a cuts that may require stitches, sprains, allergies, minor burns, eye infection and most of your urgent, yet non-emergency, health needs. With walk-in care, minimal wait times, onsite diagnostics and lower overall cost than an emergency room visit (usually including a lower co-payment), St. Vincent’s Urgent Care provides convenient and cost-effective care for many area residents. Once you leave St. Vincent’s Urgent Care, we also want to ensure there’s follow-up with your primary care physician. That’s why we share your 18 | ShelbyLiving.com

urgent care treatment, so they can include it as part of your overall medical record. It’s important that they have a full picture of your medical history, as they are managing your long-term health and wellness. And if you don’t have a primary care physician, St. Vincent’s can offer a referral, so you can form this key relationship with a physician. St. Vincent’s Urgent Care is located at 7191 Cahaba Valley Road right off U.S. 280 on Alabama 119. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 1-9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. No appointment is necessary, but you can reserve your spot online at Stvurgentcare.com. For more information, visit our website or call (205) 4082366. l Stephanie Holderby is vice president of operations at St. Vincent’s Ambulatory Healthcare Network and executive director at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.

Top trends for brides before they say yes to the dress Story by LAUREN DOWDLE Photographs CONTRIBUTED

T

here’s something truly magical about a wedding dress. For some, sliding one on is the first time they feel like a bride. The whole experience can bring tears, smiles and every emotion in between for the bride and her friends and family. But before they can find the one, brides have several options to choose from when it comes to gowns. They have to pick the length, color, neckline, design and accessories to create the wedding look they’ve always dreamed about. “It’s the most self-expressive garment you’ll ever wear, so it needs to capture the bride’s style,” says Carol Riney, owner of Bella’s Bridal & Formal in Hoover’s Patton Creek. There are several dress trends brides can expect to see as they begin their search for the perfect wedding look. 20 | ShelbyLiving.com

One popular material that continues to be a hit with brides is lace, Riney says. And there are now different patterns to choose from with lace, like vertical-line designs. But, it’s not the only material catching brides’ attention. “Lace is still very popular, but crepe and satin are becoming more prevalent,” says Amber Revis, assistant manager at Bella Couture in Mt Laurel. Many brides are also opting for a different neckline, instead of the traditional strapless design, Riney says. “We’re seeing more sleeves,” she continues. “Even cap sleeves are good on some of the dresses.” Some dresses come premade with sleeves, while others can be custom made to add them. “We have seen a lot of requests for off-theshoulder styles and lace,” Revis adds. “Sweetheart

necklines are definitely the most popular, and we have also seen a lot of high-neck styles, as well. Also, two pieces and detachable skirts have become increasingly popular.” It seems the days of bright white gowns have also faded away. As more brides stray from the traditional white dress, they are choosing light gold, champagne pink and ivory options. Almond-colored dresses are also popular, Riney says, especially under lace to really make the lace pop. Brides also have several top designers to choose from when looking for the perfect dress. Bella’s Bridal & Formal carries ones like Justin Alexander, Allure — Carol Riney Bridal, Mori Lee, Badgley-Mischka, Essence, Jasmine, Kitty Chen, Kenneth Wilson, Sottero, Tarik Ediz, Essence of Australia and Watters. “Both Justin Alexander and Essence of Australia are huge right now,” Riney says. “They are unique and very well made. No one wants to look like their friends did at their wedding — they want something different.” Bella Couture carries designers like Marisa, Allure Bridals, Lazaro, Alyne by Rita Vinieris, Enzoani, Justin Alexander,

Pronovias, Ti Adora, Valenta and Tara Keely. Their most popular designers right now are Justin Alexander, Pronovias and Lazaro. The majority of Bella’s Bridal & Formal’s wedding dresses cost $2,000 or less, although they do have a few that go up to $4,000. The average price brides are looking to spend on dresses is $2,000 to $3,000, Revis adds. Accessories are another popular way for brides to set apart their wedding look. Bella Couture has accessories from a.b. Ellie, Erin Cole, Malis Henderson, Stephanie Browne and Westwood. “Lace jackets are a big trend right now,” Revis says. In addition to jackets, other popular accessories include beaded sashes, headbands, beaded shoes from BadgleyMischka (helping traditional brides add in something blue) and, of course, veils, Riney says. “Veils really complete the look,” Riney explains. “It sets the bride and her look apart.” 22 | ShelbyLiving.com

The majority of veils are elbow and fingertip lengths, although they do sell cathedral veils as well, Riney says. Most of the dresses they sell are chapel length, she adds. No matter their style or ideas, Riney encourages brides to come into their dress consultation with an open mind. “What you fall in love with in a picture might be different from what you fall in love with at the store,” she says. She gives the example of a bride who has dreamed of a mermaid style but later likes an A line when she tries it on. “Be willing to try different things,” Riney says. Going forward, Revis predicts lace, off-theshoulder, two-piece, high neck and shear bodice dresses will be the biggest trends this year. Riney says many of last year’s wedding dress trends will continue in 2017, but necklines and the backs of dresses — like keyhole backs and backless gowns — will offer even more unique options. Bella’s Bridal & Formal (Bellasalabama. com) is located at 4441 Creekside Ave. Suite 125 in Hoover’s Patton Creek, and Bella Couture (Bellacouturellc.com) is at 104 Croft Street Suite 109 in Birmingham. l

Sports-themed cakes and cakes shaped like books or other objects are other options. Beauty

Popular treatments for brides before the big day Story by LAUREN DOWDLE Photographs by LAUREN BAILEY PHOTOGRAPHY

A

ll eyes are on the bride during her big day. She makes sure everything is perfect, from her hair and makeup to the dress. It’s a day she and her new husband will remember their entire lives. But helping her feel especially stunning and glowing can start months before the wedding day with different beauty treatments — from teeth whitening to facials. These services aren’t lastminute fixes, so it’s important brides figure out what they want done months in advance. Yellow teeth and a white dress don’t pair well together, which is why so many brides get teeth whitening before their weddings. Calera’s John Allen Baggett DMD Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers two types of whitening systems for the bride-to-be. The first option includes whitening that’s done in the office and takes about an hour and a half, 28 | ShelbyLiving.com

and it also comes with custom take-home trays for the patient to use once a month to maintain the white shade of their teeth. “Patients are very pleased with the results of the system,” said Dr. John Allen Baggett of the service that costs $425. Another option they offer is a custom tray with whitening gel that is all done at home by the patient, and that one costs $100. Beyond giving brides a whiter smile, Baggett also offers Juvederm, a dermal filler used to enhance facial areas like lips, deep wrinkles and smile lines. This treatment costs $625 per tube and lasts about six to nine months. He recommends brides come at least three months before their wedding for both teeth whitening and Juvederm. “This time frame gives the whitening time to even out and the Juvederm maximum results,” Baggett said. “Sometimes with Juvederm, there can be slight bruising and swelling that can last several days.”

To get the perfect wedding-day glow, many brides also turn to a variety of skin and injectable treatments. Pure Dermatology & Aesthetics in Hoover offers a range of skin and beauty treatments including facials, chemical peels, laser hair reduction, intense pulsed light treatments for sun spots, radio-frequency treatments to improve skin texture, lash and brow tinting, waxing, CoolSculpting and injectables like Botox. The treatments start at $20 (brow tinting) and go up from there, said Dr. Elizabeth Martin, president of Pure Dermatology & Aesthetics. Brides can begin with a free consultation to talk about their needs and concerns, and the team creates a personalized plan for her, Martin said. While the selection of services is individualized, there are a few specific ones at Pure Dermatology that are especially popular with brides. “Many brides enjoy a series of facials and chemical peels prior to the big day so the skin

has a special glow,” Martin said. She added that brides and their mothers also like botulinum toxin injections to soften frown lines, forehead lines or crow’s feet. Some services, like facials and light chemical peels, have no downtime, Martin says, but others do require a few days of recovery. They encourage the brides to start a good skin care regimen at home as early as possible to complement the results they receive from treatments. Martin said brides should schedule a consultation as soon as they get engaged to ensure there’s plenty of time for whatever treatments they want. Beyond considering the wedding date, she says it’s also important to plan your treatments around showers and other pre-

wedding events. If a bride has never had botulinum toxin or fillers and is interested, she recommends a trial run prior to the wedding. “Botulinum toxin injections last about three months, so if a bride is considering these, try to schedule a trial of this at least four to five months prior to the wedding,” Martin said. “That way, if we are happy with the results, another treatment can be scheduled just prior to the wedding. If it’s not what was expected, then it is gone before the wedding.” Injectable fillers can cause some swelling and bruising following the injection, and deeper chemical peels can require several days of recovery. Other treatments like CoolSculpting take about three months to show the best results, Martin added. She also stressed the importance of using a board-certified dermatologist for skin care needs to ensure they are qualified to perform all of the treatments. “Our ultimate goal with every procedure is for our patients

Jimmy’s favorite place, and neither of them had been on a beach trip in years. So, they decided to plan a trip to Destin, Florida, and Jimmy jumped at the opportunity to propose while they were there. It was the perfect weekend to begin their happily ever after together. When they returned home to Alabama, Kristin and Jimmy began planning their wedding right away. They set the date for June 11, 2016, at The Sonnet House in Leeds. It was a beautiful location for the bride and groom to dance their night away.

On the big day, Kristin’s bridesmaids were dressed in a celadon, strapless dress while the groomsmen wore light grey suits. Kristin’s father walked her down the aisle at 6 p.m. to the Cahaba Strings quartet. It was the perfect summer wedding complete with the most perfect lace dress, the most stunning bouquet of peonies and garden roses and the most handsome groom. The bride and groom continued their celebration with a reception to follow the ceremony surrounded by close family and friends. Kristin and Jimmy’s first

dance was one of their favorite moments of the night. They danced under the lights on the outside patio to “Mean to Me” by Brett Eldridge. The rest of the evening was filled with cake and much more dancing. By the end of the night the guests lined up to send off the bride and groom. They threw dried lavender while Kristin and Jimmy said their goodbyes and drove away. Kristin and Jimmy were thankful for their family and friends both near and far who were able to celebrate their wedding day with them. l January 2017 | 37

usan Dilipkumar Patel of Birmingham, Alabama, and Kevin Stone Ratigan of Alabaster, Alabama, were brought together in holy matrimony on Oct. 8, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham - The Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, Alabama. On Aug. 15, 2015, the couple was officially engaged after a proposal was made in New York City, at the top floor of the Whitney Museum. It was such a magical moment that even the chef at the museum sent a congratulatory brownie and champagne to the table. The couple had a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony. The ceremony started off with the 38 | ShelbyLiving.com

groom’s wedding procession, known as the Baraat. It consists of the groom seated atop a white horse, being led into the altar by the wedding party, family and friends. The horse was provided by 4H stables, out of Huntsville, Alabama. The bride wore a cream and red lengha, made of raw silk and embroidered with antique gold work. The groom donned a cream sherwani with a red pocket square and dupatta. All bridesmaids were in traditional Indian sarees and the groomsmen in kurtas, which were made and shipped from India, thanks to Lawrenceville, Georgiabased Surinder Bedi. The Hindu ceremony was officiated by Shivram Vemagal.

After completion of the ceremony, all guests were treated to a full bar, cocktail hour, which naturally lasted two hours. The party was in full swing by the time the wedding party introductions were made and the reception began. The reception tables were beautifully decorated with centerpieces arranged with ivory hydrangeas, cream and blush roses and hints of berry-colored carnations. Kathy G and Company, Inc., based in Homewood, Alabama, provided all decorations and flower arrangements. The lighting and music were all thanks to Indaglow Productions, out of Atlanta, Georgia. The five-tier wedding cake was supplied by Magic Muffins in Birmingham,

Alabama. The Indian cuisine for the reception was catered by Annapurna Catering Service, from Montgomery, Alabama, and the American cuisine was provided by The Hyatt Regency. As the reception came to an end, the newlywed’s grand exit included a shower of rose petals and an exit made in a 2015 Tesla. The night will be forgotten by none, and remembered always, thanks to the diligence and hard work of the wedding planner, Becky Baker of Becky’s Brides in Birmingham, Alabama. Complementing the bride’s ensemble was a hand-tied bouquet of exotic flowers with vibrant colors to create the ultimate southwestern bohostyle feel. On the eve of the wedding, the wedding party, who were composed of friends and family, celebrated with the groom’s parents at a rehearsal

dinner at The Gas Lighthouse. The wedding day opened with a champagne toast and lots of excitement. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed dinner, dessert and dancing in The Carriage House at Park Crest. aren Elizabeth Adam Spell from Hoover, Alabama, and Hunter Drew Kelley, also from Hoover, were united in marriage Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016 at The Barn at Shady Lane in Birmingham, Alabama. Hunter and Karen met when they were 16 at the high school they attended, Spain Park High School. Because they both love being outdoors, Hunter decided to propose to Karen while they were fishing on a boat at the hunting camp on May 6, 2016. Hunter and Karen both knew they wanted a simple wedding with Southern charm, so it was no surprise when they fell in love with The Barn at Shady Lane. With its dark wooden walls, beautiful 46 | ShelbyLiving.com

lighting and rustic feel, they knew instantly this was where they wanted to stand before their family and friends and became husband and wife. Escorted by her father, the bride wore a beautiful, strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline, lace bodice and gorgeous flowing skirt. Her veil was long and lined with intricate lace details. Hunter, Karen and all of the wedding party wore cowboy boots to complement their southern style. The wedding was held outdoors under the wooden arbor on the gorgeous rock-built stage. Although it rained all day, thankfully it cleared up just in time for pictures and the ceremony, even leaving a beautiful rainbow behind. The aisle was

lined with candles, mason jars and hydrangeas. With their wedding party by their side and the Chiavari chairs filled with hundreds of family and friends who were there to share and celebrate the beauty of marriage with the bride and groom, Hunter and Karen excitedly said, “I do!” The reception, which was held inside the barn, was decorated with hydrangeas, mason jars, sunflowers, candles and pictures of the bride and groom. The guests ate barbecue from Jim ‘n Nicks for dinner. The bride’s cake was a three-tiered cake, garnished with fresh flowers and two gold deer for the cake topper. The groom’s cake was a two-tiered

cake that was decorated with deer antlers, shot gun shells and sprigs of greenery. Both cakes were displayed on beautiful wooden cake stands, which were handmade by the groom. After dancing the night away with their family and friends, the bride and groom exited under sparklers with many cheers and applauses. They celebrated their marriage in Cancun, Mexico, and now reside at their home with their two dogs in Birmingham, Alabama. l Be Light Photography: Belightphotography.com, Instagram – @belightphotography, Facebook – Facebook.com/belightphotography January 2017 | 47

t all started with a friend request. Little did Cody know that when he logged into Facebook that day in 2014, the friend request waiting for him was from the woman he would spend forever with. It was an instant connection. Miranda was working as a registered nurse in Tuscaloosa, and Cody as a quality control manager of a steel company in Bessemer, so the two relied on phone conversations until they finally met face-to-face two months later. They were inseparable from that day forward. Cody proposed during a Garth Brooks concert 48 | ShelbyLiving.com

in June 2015 and the wedding planning began! A short year later, Cody and Miranda wed on Aug. 13, 2016 at Douglas Manor in Columbiana, Alabama. It was a steamy August day with spurts of rain showers, but that didn’t put a damper on the excitement that filled the air. The showers cleared just as the ceremony began at 6 p.m. and cast a beautiful rainbow as Miranda walked down the aisle to meet her groom. The bride was escorted by her brother, Riley Stone. The bridal gown was a beautiful, extravagantly beaded Galina Signature

with a sweetheart neckline that was accentuated with her mothers pearl necklace. She carried with her a bouquet of white roses and baby’s breath. Surrounded by the love of family and close friends, Cody and Miranda joined as one in marriage. The rustic-themed reception followed with candle lit centerpieces setting atop wood discs that were hand cut by the bride’s uncle for the special day. Cody and Miranda were celebrated with food, drinks, love, laughter and plenty of dancing. The couple ended the night with a sparkler-lit send-off

and began their adventure as husband and wife on the beautiful beaches of the Dominican Republic. The couple resides in Calera, Alabama where they just recently purchased their first home together. Miranda is currently a local hospice nurse and Cody remains the QC manager of a steel company. Miranda is the daughter of Tommy and Beverly Pendley of Berry and Cody is the son of Cjae Miske of Athens. l Kaitlin Bitz Photography: Kbitzphotography.weebly. com, Facebook.com/KaitlinBitzPhotography January 2017 | 49

The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education, adding a second job, etc. based on the randomassigned scenario. Health Focus of the Month “New Year Health Tips” 2017 Presenting Sponsor

Although healthy living is America’s leading New Year’s resolution, most plans fail before mid-February. We reached out to our health care professionals and they offered these tips to help the well-intentioned remain resolute.

Team with others Incorporate exercise into the family routine. Walk the dog every evening with the kids. Work out with a friend for accountability and fun. Consider a fitness membership or join a class.

Know yourself Are you a night person? Then don’t plan to exercise at 5 a.m. Hate to run? Try swimming or take tap dancing lessons. Find something that’s both active and fun for you. If you crave

Consult the professionals Schedule a fitness assessment every three months. Realizing you have increased your flexibility and/or strength or lowered your blood sugar will keep you motivated. WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

Lauren Woolley:

“I have dedicated people to work with”

S

Photograph CONTRIBUTED helby County Schools Educational Technology Program Area Specialist Lauren Woolley recently received the Alabama Educational Technology Association’s Emerging Leader Award. Woolley, 56, lives in Hoover. She grew up in Decatur, Georgia. She attended the University of Montevallo for undergraduate and graduate school, and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education. “I have one incredible son who gives me inspiration every day,” Woolley said. Woolley is actively involved in her church, Holy Apostles Episcopal Church. What do you love about Shelby County? Shelby County has an excellent school system. I am proud to say that I am an employee of Shelby County Schools. I love the diversity of Shelby County which I think is a huge benefit to all students. I have dedicated people to work with. How long have you served as the educational technology program area specialist for Shelby County Schools? What does the position involve? I have worked in the Technology Department for 16 years. I have served as the Technology Program Area Specialist for Shelby County Schools for 10 years and prior to that I was a Technology Resource Teacher. I have been working for Shelby County Schools for 27 years. I began my career here as a first grade teacher at Oak Mountain Elementary. As the Tech. Program Specialist I work closely with the Tech Resource Teachers to design professional development for classroom teachers to help them learn new and innovative ways to integrate technology into their curriculum. I also work with the school Technology Coordinators in developing their school tech plans and implementing the State Technology 80 | ShelbyLiving.com

Course of Study. I work closely with the Instructional Staff as well since technology plays such a huge role with students in all curricular areas and as they work to develop 21st Century skills. What does it mean to you to be named the third recipient of the Alabama Educational Technology Association’s Emerging Leader Award? What is the process for being chosen? It is a huge honor to be selected as the recipient of the Al. Ed. Technology Association’s (AETA) Emerging Leader Award. I have such great respect for the members of AETA. The members of AETA are dedicated to educating all students and giving them opportunities to learn in the ways students learn today. This group of people is very dedicated to what they do and work very hard. So, to be selected among this group is a very big honor. Nominations are accepted from members of AETA. I was nominated by a member of the Shelby County Technology Department. The nominations go before an AETA committee made up of other AETA members that have received an AETA award in the past. This committee reviews the nominations to select the recipient for

each year. In your opinion, what are some of the most significant ways technology has impacted education in the last five to 10 years? I believe that technology has had a big impact on education in the last 10 years and will continue to grow. The students today have grown up with technology and it comes natural to them. Technology increases student engagement in the class, students are able to interact with their teacher and fellow classmates through various technologies, and teachers are able to get quick feedback from their students to gauge understanding and adjust their teaching accordingly. It makes anytime anywhere learning a possibility. Do you have any specific goals regarding technology in Shelby County’s schools? My goals right now are working to increase teacher understanding of some of the tools and resources that are available with technology for them and their students. Teachers have so many responsibilities right now in addition to their teaching. They do not have the time to explore and learn new technologies. If we can do the research and find the best tools and approaches to them then share with teachers and teach them ways to use and implement them with their students, it can impact their teaching and student learning. What hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your spare time? I love spending time with my family and friends. I have some amazing friends to enjoy. I love to go camping with my friends. I just enjoy time to relax and have fun. I enjoy activities with my church and being involved there. My church is involved with soup kitchens, Habitat for Humanity and many other activities to give back to the community. l
