THE SIMPLE LIFE

Space hoarders

R

eality shows have made us aware of situations, disorders, and challenges that only a few years ago we never knew existed. Entire series are created focusing on what it’s like to have trouble letting go of things that serve no purpose, saving Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, items “just in case,” and holding Simpleworksmtsp.com on to memorabilia because we lisa@simpleworksmtsp.com don’t know what else to do with 205.981.7733 it. There is probably a little bit of a “hoarder” in every one of us. The line is crossed when the excess “stuff” consumes our ability to function daily. While there are extremes, let’s look at what is taking up space in most of our homes. • Large toys. Plastic kitchens, train tables, and Barbie jeeps take up valuable space, especially when we hang on to these items even after the children have outgrown them. Try purging every six months since motor skills develop quickly. • Old furniture. Weigh the pros and cons of keeping household items: the dishes for when someone moves out, furniture for apartments, or yesterday’s curtains. Be honest. Is the space they take up worth the money you save by keeping old, used items? • Exercise equipment. You still get praise for having attempted to use the treadmill. While exercise is a good idea, reality sets in and you may find the equipment serves a better purpose as a clothes rack than a weight reducer. If your exercise routine is still in shape, great. If not, could the space be used for a more practical purpose? • Kitchen items. With limited cabinet space, watch purchasing appliances, like a pasta maker, bread machine, or ice cream maker, designed for only one purpose. Determine how you cook and look for multi-purpose appliances. Also, consider the space needed to store items when buying in bulk. • Empty boxes. This would fall in the “just in case I need this someday” category. If you are saving the original box to repack the item when you move, consider when you plan to move. If not immediately, then you need to weigh packing convenience versus space available. Many times boxes are saved for mailing purposes. Again, if you ship infrequently consider options that don’t require you to store large bulky boxes. The majority of us have cluttered our homes with large space hoarders. Yet with a focused eye, we can now ask the hard question, “Do I need, value, or love this, and could I get another one if I need it?” By removing large pieces of clutter, you’ll find your living spaces opening up, your home feeling larger, and your life more spacious. It’s that simple. l 8 | ShelbyLiving.com

Shelby County Schools unveils new logo The Shelby County School District unveiled a new logo and tagline during a special Showcase of Schools event, held April 16 at the Pelham Civic Complex. The colors of the logo, which was designed by the Montgomery-based advertising agency, Stamp Idea Group, are the same as the American flag and point to the fact that the one of the district’s greatest strengths is found in the diversity of the communities and students it serves. The image in the upper portion of the logo is an abstract representation of both an open book and a flame. The open book signifies an unending quest for knowledge, while the flame is symbolic of the district’s goal to ignite a pursuit of life-long learning within each of its students. The columns located in the lower portion of the logo represent the district’s long-standing tradition of excellence and mission to equip every student with a strong foundation for success in life and learning. The school district also unveiled a redesigned website and new video, which stresses the new tagline “Prepared for the Journey.”

at Russell has a mind that “thrives on figuring things out.” Now a retired systems analyst for Blue Cross, she worked there for 28 years and was the first to train colleagues when personal computers were introduced. “I had friends who couldn’t imagine what to do after retirement, but I have had a blast,” she says. “I enjoy golfing (which she took up at 40) and teaching at Bead Biz.” “Of course, teaching tatting was not something I planned, but when Lora Lunsford, (Bead Biz owner) showed me the tatting shuttle she had inherited, I knew I could figure it out,” she continued. Tatting is a technique for creating lace

using knots and loops. The technique dates back to the 18th century, and the fabric can be used for lace collars, doilies and more. Russell is a patient teacher who can demonstrate and explain each step clearly. This summer, Russell will teach children’s classes at Bead Biz. One offering, suitable even for small tots, is a Fairy Wand class. After talking with kids during the Buck Creek Festival, she is finalizing ideas with coteacher Marcia Ingram. Other anticipated class projects are for a motherdaughter bracelet, multicolored friendship bracelet and

a woven animal charm. Class sizes for younger children will be just one-hour long and limited to 4 or 5. “For tatting, I encourage everyone to invest in a tin shuttle, which will last for years,” she said. “At first force yourself to think of every step as you do it – under, over,” she tells students, who begin by tatting an inch. It takes practice to get the feel of the threads and Russell will assign homework. She suggests each student analyze her tatting work and if a mistake is made, it can be cut up or started over; that’s a call to be made dependent upon the project. Russell grew up on the East Coast, where she first developed her love for crafting and learning. “My dad was a textile chemist, but he also knew how to sew and how to bake bread,” she said. “When I was younger, we built a Sailfish (boat) together and I learned how to sail.” In college, Russell began studies to become a textile chemist as well, but her heart was not in it. She then encountered computers “in the early days” and fell in love. Her father, by then teaching at Auburn, suggested she look at the school and she completed her final two years there. Today, Russell also enjoys wire crochet and several of her bracelet designs are shown in the accompanying photo. The art of Soutache, which is the cording technique used on epaulets, is also an interest, which spurred her to create Auburn and Alabama motif necklaces. Recently, she also designed a tatted floral motif that is centered with a natural stone and set on a leather wristband. Often the overall design springs from the image she “sees” within the stone. Russell is listed online as a tatting resource in the state of Alabama called Be-Stitched, Be-stitched. com, and is authorized to teach any of the patterns shown on the website. Russell also works as a nanny for a family with both parents in the medical field. “The girls call me Camp Pat. We never lack for interesting projects.” Continuing to grow and learn is what intrigues Pat Russell. For class information, call 205-621-2426. The Bead Biz is located at 3745 Helena Road in Helena. ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

Southern sound Story by LINDSAY DYESS Photograph CONTRIBUTED

M

uscle Shoals music veteran Russell Gulley has finally returned to the recording studio while paying homage to his musical roots. While he records his new untitled album, he’s been busy playing music festivals and shows around the South promoting the love of the music that started it all. In a recent interview Gulley said, “I’m striving to contribute to the Muscle Shoals tradition, a tradition of song writing that is non-pretentious, a tradition that truly has given Muscle Shoals its soul.” Muscle Shoals recording studios have spawned legends such as Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge and The Civil Wars. Gulley’s musical roots focus on a mix of blues, soul, gospel, country and rock and roll. As he plucks the guitar strings in his latest single “No Holds Barred,” you can’t help but sway to the slow Southern sound.

Not only does Gulley share his love of Muscle Shoals music tradition through his songs, he is also involved in many groups and organizations that spread the joy of folk music. Some of his work includes: Director of the DeKalb County Fiddler’s Convention, director of the Kamama Music Series in Mentone, a board member of the Alabama Folklife Association and the executive director of the Big Willis Arts Council in Fort Payne. When he is not out playing music he can be found teaching classes as the artist in residence for Fort Payne City school system. He teaches workshops, classes, coordinates artist visits and performs for the students himself. One of his biggest projects has been “Intro: Folks Music, Blues, and Tradition.” This program teaches K-12 students about their heritage and music culture. “Gulley has an understanding of the importance of keeping the folk music tradition alive that

A step toward

healing Magnolia Creek offers residential treatment for eating disorders

Story by LINDA LONG Photographs CONTRIBUTED

W

ords on stepping stones tell the story. Messages from the soul reflecting a search for help and hope. “The pain I’ve been feeling is just the hurt before the healing; just the dark before the morning,” reads one, and another, “The first step is the longest stride.” These words, literally engraved in stone, were penned by the young women who call Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders in Columbiana their temporary home. “A walk down the stepping stone path in our garden is a powerful experience,” said Jamie Edwards, Magnolia Creek executive director. “The stones are created by our residents who are graduating from the program.” Magnolia Creek, which opened its doors seven years ago, bills itself as the only residential treatment facility for eating disorders in Alabama. Situated on 37 wooded acres and centered by a five-acre lake, the old-fashioned yellow clapboard farmhouse is where the journey begins for young women whose primary diagnosis is a feeding or eating disorder, such as: Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder. “Our goal is to normalize food for them and make them think about food like a normal person would,” Edwards explained. “I eat my three meals and maybe a snack, but food is not a consuming issue for me because I deal with stress and emotions in an appropriate way and not using food to deal with it. What we try to do is to normalize food for them, to take the focus of their existence off food and help them to deal with the issues they are having through therapeutic means.” Perhaps part of that therapy is a visit to the house’s wide wraparound porch outfitted with the requisite rocking chairs reminiscent of lazy Southern summer days. This is a quiet place, a nurturing place, and as the stones say, a place where young women over the age of 18 struggling with eating disorders come to find hope to overcome their disease and help with how to do that. “We believe that individuals with eating disorders are capable of making a true and lasting recovery,” Edwards said. “That’s why together, we work hand in hand, encouraging them to be active participants in their treatment process and instilling in them a sense of hope and empowerment. What makes us unique is that we offer 24hour care with trained medical nurses. That means we can treat patients with higher medical needs. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia often are accompanied by deeper psychological issues, personality disorders, even drug and alcohol abuse. “We are therapeutically intense,” he continued. “I’ve been in been in this kind of work for 25 years and have never been in a place that has had as many groups and activities going on. Everything here focuses on their getting well from the moment they wake up until they go to bed.” Magnolia Creek is strictly women only, because an eating July 2014 | 17

disorder primarily targets women as its victims. Statistics show that of all people with eating disorders, 90 percent are women. In fact, studies also show the problem begins long before a girl’s 18th birthday. The numbers are, in fact, staggering: Four out of five 10-year-olds say that they’re afraid of being fat. Forty two percent of girls in first through third grade wish they were thinner. Almost half of girls as young as 9 years old say they like themselves better when they are dieting. A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported that 5 – 10 percent of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20 percent of anorexics will be dead after 20 years and only 30 – 40 percent ever fully recover. And, although there are many reasons young women are stricken with eating disorders, Edwards puts much of the blame squarely on the media’s doorstep. According to Edwards, movies, magazines, television shows and advertising all present a culture obsessed with self imposed false images of how a woman should look. “And, now,” he emphasized, “the use of Photoshop to make already thin women look even thinner, is only adding fuel to the fire.” “Let’s look at Barbie,” Edwards said. “A study was done that showed if Barbie were a real woman, due to her proportions she would have to walk on all fours, and with a neck twice as long as and six inches thinner than the average woman, she wouldn’t be able to hold her head up. Since her waist is only 16 inches, Barbie would have only half a liver. And, these are the dolls parents give their little girls to play with. It’s only saying, ‘This is how women should look.’” “This is an all-encompassing disease,” explained Jane Johnson, program coordinator. “It not only affects their mental health, but their physical health too, so we have to go at it from a holistic approach. We’ve brought in clients here in so much need that their body systems and brains are already somewhat shut down. We’ve seen these same young women graduate from our programs with healthy bodies and repaired relationships with family members and friends. Obviously it’s difficult at first. Sometimes, we have days that can be really bad, but when we see the good days and the progress, it is so rewarding not only for us, but for them as well. This is one of the most challenging populations to work with, but it is also one of the most rewarding.” “We know we can’t be a fix-all and end-all,” said Johnson, “but we can set the ground work and the foundational work. Our hope is that they go into outpatient care. Here, our patients take the first step to go out into the real world, take what they’ve learned and apply it.” According to Johnson, the majority of patients who leave Magnolia Creek are doing just that. As one graduate testifies, “Just wanted to let you know that everything’s going great, and I’m not letting myself disappear … I couldn’t be happier. Thank you for helping me learn to love life.” l July 2014 | 19

Outdoor Living at its finest

Summer Classics creates outdoor furniture with its customers in mind

Story by LAUREN HEARTSILL DOWDLE Photographs CONTRIBUTED

W

hether homeowners enjoy grilling out, relaxing by the pool, hosting backyard get-togethers or kicking back with a cold drink on a sunny day, they’ll need the perfect furnishings to complete their outdoor experience. But chairs and table have come a long way in the past few decades. With a finger on the pulse of the outdoor-living industry, Summer Classics creates furniture to fit a variety of styles and spaces. “In the South, an outdoor room is a place that has a screenedin porch, comfortable furniture and the ability to change the temperature – either with a fire place or outdoor heater,” says Bew White III, president and CEO of Summer Classics. White has watched and helped mold the transformation of furniture in his more than four decades of experience with outdoor living and dining. He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in textile engineering and later decided to head out on his own in 1978. He learned the business at first by working as a sales rep but later took a more customer-focused approach with his furniture business. “When I was a sales rep, the products I sold were based on what the company manufactured,” he explains. “I had the idea that somebody needed to make what the customer wanted, instead of what the furniture store made.”

ABOVE: The Classic Wicker collection features a traditional diamond back pattern with a braided frame. Summer Classics has 10 exclusive outdoor furniture stores, including one in Pelham, pictured, and over 300 authorized dealers.

That idea became the foundation for his company. “We watch what people purchase,” White says. “We design our own fabrics, and we’re constantly working with color, designs and materials.” Summer Classics offers chairs, bar/dining tables, sofas, storage, benches, lamps, stone tabletops, barstools and other comfy, eye-catching items. Their dining chairs range from about $200 to $750 and lounging chairs with cushions from $599 to $2,000. “Most people don’t shop us for price,” White says. Whether clients are looking for chic, modern or rustic furniture to complete their outdoor room, Summer Classics has a variety of style options. They have more than 35 collections that include Athena, an elegant wicker resin style, and Marina, aluminum furniture with a Mahogany finish frame and decorative rope accents that create a nautical scene. One of their more popular materials is Resysta – an environmentally friendly resin product composed of mineral oil, salt and rice husks. “It’s a classic that looks like wood,” he says. Resysta is available in a range of color shades. The company also offers items composed of wrought iron, wrought aluminum, teak, cast aluminum, mixed materials, fabrics and stone. 26 | ShelbyLiving.com

This outdoor furniture manufacturer has 360 dealers, 11 stores, 200 employees and is the largest outdoor furniture store in the United States, White says. They also sell products in countries like Russia, Japan and Canada, and White has a goal of doubling the business in the next five years. “We’re passionate about what we do,” White says. While outdoor items are its specialty, Summer Classics has also expanded to reach an even broader customer base. The company has five divisions, making it a one-stop shop: Summer Classics (wholesale), Summer Classics Contract, Summer Classics Home Stores & Licensees, Parker James – a private label serving large specialty retailers – and Gabby, a home-furnishing manufacturer. Their clients include hotels, restaurants, garden centers and more. These other divisions, especially Gabby, helped the company survive when the economy went south, White says. Gabby (gabbyhome.com) sells lighting fixtures and furniture such as seating, tables, antiques, mirrors, cabinets and more. White is also expanding in Pelham by transforming the vacant Moore-Handley property on Highway 31 into the new headquarters for Summer Classics. “One of the reasons I bought this building is because I’m always looking ahead and seeing where we should go,” White says. The new facility, which White hopes will open between January and March 2015, will house a show room, cushion factory and staff offices. They will hold a job fair sometime before Christmas to fill new positions the Pelham location will create. For more information about Summer Classics, go to summerclassics.com or visit its flagship store at 111 Hinds Street in Pelham. The store is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. l July 2014 | 29

reystone Golf & Country Club will launch a $4 million renovation this summer in preparation for the Regions Tradition in 2016. Regions Financial Corporation and the PGA Tour’s Champions Tour announced in March that the Regions Tradition, considered a major event on the tour, will relocate from Shoal Creek to Greystone Golf & Country Club in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Greystone’s Board of Directors and Club Trustees approved three building projects that would enhance club facilities, considering the Regions Tradition

and the club’s strategic plans to become a Club of Excellence. The projects were presented to club members, and votes were cast with an approval rating of 95 percent. The projects include: Building a new 9,000-square-foot golf operations center, which will house the golf car fleet, and constructing a welcoming recognition plaza. Renovating the lower level of the Founders Clubhouse, adding a 4,500-square-foot state-of-theart fitness center, childcare facility, contemporary kitchen and bar area, casual dining room with seating for 70 people and a modernized women’s

The projects will begin in July and are slated for completion by March 2016. The Regions Tradition is set for early May 2016. “The Club membership will have new facilities that will be aesthetically attractive, spaces that are functional, and areas that address our most challenged issues,” Club General Manager Calvin Bolling said. “These areas will increase utilization and attract new families to the Club.” Modifications to the club’s Founders Golf Course also will begin in July. The Champions Tour will make up to $500,000 in course upgrades, with completion slated for late September. “The golf course renovations at Founders will require course closure of approximately 90 days, at which time the Legacy Golf Course will be open for play,” said Club President Jeff Clinton. l

Richard and Donna Urrutia’s Greystone home features the best in outdoor living July 2014 | 33

R

ichard Urrutia can remember the moment he fell in love with his Greystone home. He and his wife, Donna, were visiting the home with a realtor, and he was immediately drawn to the outdoor living area. The pool was not yet complete, but the outdoor kitchen was, and Richard could see the potential. “I remember Donna said, ‘Do you want to come in to look at the house?’ and I said, ‘No, I found it,” he recalled. That was seven years ago, but both of the Urrutias are just as enamored with their outdoor living area today as they were when they first moved in – maybe even more so now that they have added personal touches to the area. The backyard is now home to a stunning pool, lush landscape, koi pond, herb garden and several sitting areas. Donna also loves to spend time outside, either relaxing or gardening, one of her passions. The yard is filled with plants that bloom at different times of year: gardenias, camellias, azaleas, oak leaf hydrangeas, jasmine, dogwoods and magnolias. “There’s always some fragrance in the backyard, and there’s usually something blooming, except in the dead of winter,” she said. “I pick the flowers and bring them in. In the summer, I can go out and pick an entire arrangement from the yard.” The outdoor living area has been the scene of many a pool party and dinner party over the years, especially when their three daughters, who are now grown, were young. For the interior of the house, Donna prefers a contemporary look with clean lines and minimal “clutter,” including fringe, tassels or too many knick knacks. “The house was so traditional,” she said. “It was hard to put really contemporary furniture in here.” Instead, she focused on furniture with clean, simple lines and contemporary colors. She bought much of her artwork and furniture at Scandinavian Design Gallery in Hoover. The five-bedroom brick home opens into a foyer that is flanked on either side by a sitting room and dining room. A long vertical painting featuring a dancing woman is the focal point of the sitting room. “A lot of times what I’ll do is buy a piece of art and decorate the room around it,” Donna said. In the sitting room, the colors in the painting are echoed in the fabrics and wall color. A piano and animal print rug add character to the room. The dining room features a mix of contemporary and traditional pieces. A mirror with a concave sunburst pattern hangs on one wall, while Donna’s grandmother’s chairs surround the dining room table. Donna Frazier, a Greystone resident and owner of The CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Mismatched chairs surround the breakfast room table, adding a pop of color in the kitchen. Donna’s grandmother’s chairs provide a traditional element in the dining room. Azaleas bloom behind the pergola overlooking the pool.

July 2014 | 35

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The lower floor features a contemporary bar and wine cellar. Donna Urrutia favors a contemporary style with curved sofas, a concrete fireplace and a modern coffee table in the living room. The yard is filled with native plants that bloom throughout the year.

36 | ShelbyLiving.com

Asbury Cottage, an interior design company, helped the Urrutias with window treatments and paint colors. In the dining room, the walls and panel moudling are painted a muted green with a faux finish. The living room features more contemporary elements. A concrete fireplace anchors the room, while two curved leather sofas provide ample seating for visitors. A glasstopped coffee table with an abstract base and mirrored nesting end tables are other modern elements. Two built-ins flank the fireplace, one home to a bar and the other to several Murano glass and natural crystal pieces. “I love colored glass,” Donna said. “I like having the contemporary glasswork with natural-looking pieces.” The living room is open to the kitchen and smaller dining area. The kitchen features white cabinets, granite counters and neutral walls. The master bedroom and bathroom are also located on the main floor. The master bedroom features neutral colors and a sleigh bed with an ornamental headboard and footboard. The master bathroom was almost completely redone with new flooring, cabinetry and counters when the Urrutias moved in, as were most of the bathrooms in the house. July 2014 | 37

“The only thing that’s original is the tub,” Donna said. Downstairs is a media room with a second kitchen, bar and wine cellar with a cork floor. Donna used more contemporary pieces for the rooms, including colored tile backsplash in the kitchen, a curved, multi-level bar and modern bar stools. The kitchen is often used a catering kitchen when the Urrutias entertain. They also use the area for hosting visitors and for their own entertainment. “We come down here and watch movies a lot of times,” Donna said. The second floor is home to several bedrooms, an office and an entertainment room. Their daughters – the oldest is a University of Alabama graduate, where the other two are still students – still visit often and stay in their old rooms during their trips home. But with summer in full swing, all of the Urrutias can most likely be found in their favorite living area – the backyard. l RIGHT: In the Urrutias’ youngest daughter’s bedroom reflects her interests: Dance and fashion.

Heavenly blueberry pie

Serve this sweet treat at a Fourth of July family gathering

Recipe by BIRMINGHAM BAKE AND COOK Photos by JON GOERING

42 | ShelbyLiving.com

FRESH BLUEBERRY LATTICE TOP PIE Ingredients: 2 Pounds 1/2 Cup 1/3 Cup 1/8 Teaspoon ½ Teaspoon 1/8 Teaspoon 2 Tablespoons 2 Each 1 Each 1 Tablespoon 2 Tablespoon

Blueberries (about 7 cups) Sugar Cornstarch Nutmeg Cinnamon, ground Cardamom Lime juice, fresh Dough discs, recipe follows Egg Heavy cream or water Demerara Sugar, for dusting (raw sugar may be substituted), optional

1. Preheat your oven to 400F degrees. Place a half sheet pan on a rack closest to the bottom of the oven.

2. Combine the blueberries, sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and lime juice. Stir to combine.

3. Spoon the mixture into the center of the pie plate. Arrange

the lattice dough strips on the pie, making sure the strips are the same diameter as the bottom overhanging dough. Fold all of the overhanging dough back and under. Crimp as desired. Refrigerate or freeze the pie for at least an hour until very firm.

4. Whisk together the egg and cream or water to make an egg

wash. Lightly brush the crust with this mixture, taking care not to “wash” the filling and then dust the crust with demerara sugar.

5. Place a piece of parchment on the sheet pan that is in your

oven; place the pie on top. Bake until the crust just begins to turn a light brown, about 30 minutes. Move the rack to the center of the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 350F degrees. Continue baking until the juices are thickened and bubbling, about and hour. Keep a watch on your crust – if it is darkening too quickly, cover it with foil.

6. Transfer the pie from the over to a wire rack to completely

cool and set before cutting – unfortunately, it could be up to three hours. Yield: 9-inch pie

(ALL BUTTER) PATE BRISÉE PIE CRUST Ingredients 2 ½ Cups + 1 Teaspoon 1 Teaspoon 8 Ounces ¼ Cup - ½ Cup

All purpose flour, chilled Salt Sugar Unsalted butter, cold, ½-inch dice Ice water

1. Combine the flour, salt and sugar in the bowl of a food processor and pulse to combine.

2. Disperse the butter over the top of the flour mixture and

pulse until the mixture becomes coarse but still has substantial chunks.

3. Pour ¼ cup of ice water evenly over the mixture and pulse

again. At this point, if the mixture does not hold together when you grab a chunk, add additional ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until it holds together.

4. Turn out the mixture into a work surface and divide the

dough into two piles. Wrap each in plastic wrap forming a compact, flat-ish disc and refrigerate for a minimum of an hour or overnight.

5. Lightly dust the surface of your work area with flour. Roll out one of the dough discs to 13-inch round, about 1/8-inch thick. Fit it into your 9-inch pie plate. Trim the overhang to about 1-inch. Refrigerate or freeze until very firm, about 30 minutes or so, before filling.

6. Roll out the second piece of dough in the same manner and using a pizza cutter or equivalent, cut into 3/4-inch - 1-inch strips. Keep the dough strips intact and reserve in refrigerator until needed. Yield: 2 each pie crusts

Heal Yourself With Massage

Newsletter

Back Pain, Headaches, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Deprivation, Depression and Anxiety. How do these ailments relate? There may not be a magic pill that will ease all of these discomforts, but a good massage could be the cure! When thinking about a professional massage, one usually relates it to a special gift you receive once a year to get pampered for

all your hard work. But what if we changed our perception of massage as pampering and more accurately viewed it as preventative and curative medicine? What if instead of masking our aches and pains with medication, we rubbed them away with massage? Massage is a special treat, a chance to get away, unwind, and relax. While you are enjoying those aspects, a

massage reduces the levels of the cortisol, a stress hormone, and boosts the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine resulting in lower blood pressure, a brighter outlook, and less depression. Wellness programs for college students are acknowledging the highstress among students during final exams and offering events to help them de-stress. In 2012, Samford University offered free massages during exam week and the response was overwhelming. At St. Vincent’s we regularly offer massages for employees through free events and discounts. This approach was based on the evidence that massage decreases anxiety, depression, and increases alertness. These findings can easily be implemented elsewhere. Massage also improves sleep. You may find yourself dozing off while experiencing a massage. This is because a massage affects the brain waves causing deep sleep. Studies have shown massage helps maintain overall health by increasing the production of white blood cells needed to fight disease. This boost in immune system function makes massage a wonderful compliment to Western medical approaches to cancer treatments. It may help reduce pain, swelling, fatigue, and nausea in addition to boosting immunity. Massage is for both the young and the old and the benefits are consistent regardless of age. Touch is the first sense humans develop. In Eastern and African cultures, infant massage has long been a common practice

in families. Some form of bodywork is used by many indigenous tribes to soothe, relax and heal their little ones, sometimes including scented oils and herbal remedies as part of the experience. Both infants and the elderly have exhibited failure to thrive without adequate physical contact. Massage can be incorporated simply. You can begin by massaging your children before bed at night. As adults, we can incorporate massage with everyday items found around the home such as tennis balls for counter-pressure, a rolling pin for rolling pressure, massage chairs, whirlpool jets with a relaxing bath, or exchanging massages with a spouse, family member or friend. If you are unsure of the techniques of massage, meet with a professional massage therapist, research and learn. Regular massage can ensure that touch is a positive, nurturing, and healing part of the human experience. Heal yourself with a massage! Laura Reeder, C.H.E.S., A.A.H.C.C.
