FROM THE EDITOR

S

tretching and using muscles I didn’t even know existed aren’t normally part of my interview process. But Reformer Training Studio owner Ainslie McLean had other plans. Her Inverness studio features three Reformer machines that work every muscle in your body but don’t have the high-impact effects you might experience with other types of exercise — something I especially liked when I took her intro class. This Pilates-inspired program is ideal for anyone who wants to start (and keep) moving — whether you have knee, back or other issues. I hadn’t heard about this type of exercise program before, but I’m sure glad I have now. While the results at the studio are impressive — I was definitely a bit sore after my first class — McLean’s story is just as powerful. From having a heart attack at 39 to dealing with several other health issues, she continues to push forward and motivate everyone around her. Read the full story on page 14. Someone else whose passion for his work shines through is William Upton, the owner of Windwood Equestrian in Pelham. Featured on page 20, this property holds everything from horse riding lessons to rustic,

stunning weddings. He spent years figuring out the best layout, materials and game plan for the farm, and his hard work definitely shows. It may be every little girls dream to ride or have a horse (at least I know it was for me), but Windwood has something for every age and gender. Something else you might not be expecting to find in Pelham is the Gabby line at Summer Classics. Although it continues to grow and gain national attention, this company is pure Shelby County. You’ll find contemporary and traditional furniture, lighting fixtures and other décor pieces. Be sure to check out this piece starting on page 34. This issue features stories about local swim teams, Alabama National Cemetery, Blowfish Sushi and more, as well. You’ll also notice a change going forward. This will be my last month filling in for Katie McDowell as the editor of Shelby Living. I’ve loved getting to know all of people and businesses we’ve featured the past few months — and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about them. Have a great summer, and happy reading! l

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Stop Saying ‘Maybe’

H

ow many times do you hear “maybe” when you ask for someone’s time, energy or attention? How often have you been the one saying maybe to avoid saying no? When you answer maybe for an invitation to an event, meeting or request, what you’re really doing is Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, avoiding making a firm decision. Simpleworks.guru There are many reasons why you lisa@simpleworks.guru say/hear maybe, yet what you’re 205.981.7733 really doing is causing additional mental and emotional anguish by delaying the decision process. Despite what you might think, no is a good answer. Not as good as a yes, yet no ranks above maybe any day of the week. Why? Because a maybe leads to a domino effect that doesn’t help those involved move forward, thus decreasing productivity. Here are three reasons why you might hear (or give) a maybe. • Decision fatigue. Many times the answer is maybe when one more decision can’t be made. Our lives are filled with constant decisions that cause mental exhaustion. That is why you often hear, “I don’t know” when you ask, “What do you want for dinner?” Being able to say yes or no to a request when you’re mentally exhausted is too hard: You need to consider too many details, too much to figure out. So, you say maybe, thus bringing everything to a standstill. • Not enough information. When you say maybe to a request, what you might be doing is buying yourself a little more time. It’s impossible to make a good decision until you know more details, such as what else is on your calendar, time involved, etc. Consider responding with, “I need a few more details before I can give you a firm yes or no. When is a good time to discuss this further?” • Feeling guilty. Do you feel you’ll hurt someone’s feelings if you turn down a request or invitation? In this case, the word maybe comes into play as a way to soften the blow. You didn’t say yes or no, so maybe keeps all the waters calm. Maybe is not having to make a commitment. Learn to say no gracefully. There are a million ways to say no. Be as short or long with your explanation, just watch that you don’t exaggerate your reason to make yourself feel better. Be more productive by deleting maybe as an option. It’s that simple. l

Despite what you might think, no is a good answer. Not as good as a yes, yet no ranks above maybe any day of the week.

SHORT STORIES

Students become Eagle Scouts After starting Cub Scouts in October 2011, five of the original members of the Wilsonville Boy Scout Troop 588 all made Eagle Scout as of April. To commemorate their accomplishments, the boys — Nicholas Chapple, Wil and Johnathon Langner, Luke Lawler and Noah Reece — joined together at the Alabama Boy Scouts of America in Vestavia Hills May 19. Scout Master Don Langner and Keith Lawler formed the troop together in 2011, and both said it was challenging. Now, each of the original members has received the distinction by completing a service project, earning a set number of merit badges and taking on additional responsibilities within the troop. Reece chose to complete a project at Wilsonville Elementary School. Reece decided to build planters and build an outdoor learning area for the students. Johnathon Langner also created an outdoor learning center for students, but he chose Elvin Hill Elementary School. Chapple and Wil Langner both chose to create pavilions at Elvin Hill to help provide for the children and the community in Columbiana. Lawler also chose Elvin Hill Elementary for his service project and revitalized the flagpole area in front of the school.

Helena coach recognized In her second year as the head softball coach of the Lady Huskies, Heidi Kouveras made a concerted effort to test her girls at the beginning of the year. A season ago, the first in the history of both the school and program, Helena finished a respectable 19-13-1 and made an appearance in the 5A South Central Regional tournament, where the Lady Huskies went 1-2. For a first-year school and a first-year program, an area title and a regional tournament win was nothing to be ashamed of, but Kouveras believed the program was capable of more. As a result, Kouveras made sure

to test her girls in 2016, loading the schedule with as many talented 6A and 7A schools as she could. The tougher schedule meant a slower start for this Helena team, and as of March 21, the Lady Huskies were middling around .500 at 10-8. However, as the season went on the Lady Huskies began to gain steam, eventually nabbing the second seed out of the regional tournament this year, and parlaying that into a runner-up finish at the 5A state tournament. Because of the job Kouveras did at the helm of this Helena team, she is the 2016 Shelby County softball Coach of the Year.

Veteran goes on journey After being injured by two anti-tank mines in Afghanistan on his second deployment, Calera resident Joseph Lowery, 36, is embarking on a journey to traverse New Hampshire’s Presidential Range this July. Lowery, an Army and National Guard veteran, will join 12 other service members with various disabilities for a challenging week-long trek across the Presidential Range from July 9–15. The veterans were selected by representatives from No Barriers Warriors and Wells Fargo to participate in the 2016 Warriors to Summits Expeditions I or II. Both expeditions are equally grueling journeys on opposite ends of the U.S.

The veterans face life-altering disabilities ranging from emotional and physical trauma to chronic pain and amputated limbs. Some experience combat flashbacks and survivor’s guilt, while others continue to struggle with readjusting to civilian life. Veterans were chosen based on attitude and their physical and mental ability to successfully participate. Lowery, an Alabama native, resides in Calera with his wife and three children. Jones Memorial Foundation recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to 10 students in various schools throughout Shelby County, including six students in the Shelby County School District. The foundation was established to honor the memory of Ora L. Jones, a Montevallo native and retiree of the University of Montevallo. Her children, including Michael Jones, principal of New Directions, established the foundation after she passed in 2011. The memorial scholarship helps educate a child to motivate them to live out the principles modeled by Ora L. Jones so they can demonstrate a life of service by helping somebody else. Proceeds from the second annual OLJ 5K race, which was held in Montevallo on May 7, along with other donations were used to fund the scholarships. The 2016 OLJ Memorial scholarship winners were Brooke Hurst and Tia Mc-

n object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion. While Newton’s First Law of Motion is not a new concept, actually achieving that movement can seem impossible for someone dealing with muscle, back or skeletal pain — all things Ainslie McLean knows too well. Growing up, McLean played soccer and continued to through college. So it seemed only natural that she would go to a pick-up game as an adult. But during the game, she got side tackled, which led to her needing her ACL reconstructed. That was just the first of many health setbacks. “As I got older and had kids, I became debilitated,” McLean says. “My hips hurt all of the time, and I couldn’t run anymore. I was miserable.” She saw various doctors who took x-rays and MRIs, only to say that everything was fine. “They just gave me pain killers, and I’m allergic to them,” she says. “Muscular pain doesn’t necessarily show up on x-rays

or MRIs, but the pain is real. It can be debilitating.” Her friend even invited her to a Pilates class to see if it would help, but McLean ended up just hurting more afterward. Still looking for some relief, she tried a Reformer class a year later and actually felt better after the first time. The Reformer machine is based off of the exercises of Joseph Pilates — founder of Pilates — except it involves taking all of the gravity and weight off of the person’s weakest points. The frame rolls back and forth on wheels, and there are also straps that can be used for feet and hands. “You can burn 969 calories an hour, without getting all hot and sweaty afterward,” she says. “You’ll feel so much better. It’s a doable lifestyle change for real people: People just haven’t heard of it.” After going to these classes for a while, her Reformer teacher suggested she should make a job out of it and teach her own classes. McLean followed her advice and began working toward her certification. McLean went on to become BalJuly 2016 | 15

It would seem everything was going in the right direction for McLean to have a happy and healthy lifestyle, but her body had other plans. She had a heart attack at age 39 and later found out she had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and lupus — which caused her to have arthritis. Those were all things she wasn’t expecting, especially considering her focus on fitness. Instead of making her conditions a life sentence of immobility, she continued with her Reformer passion and began working on making it a business of her own. In February 2015, she opened Reformu Reformer Training Studio and moved to her current location in the Inverness Highlands shopping center. It’s a way for her to help others find the physical relief and wellness she has come to enjoy, she says. “Before, I couldn’t sleep, walk or

be a good mom and wife,” McLean recalls. “The Reformer worked the very first time. It takes your pain away, so why wouldn’t you try it? “If something hurts, you’ll stop and try something else,” she continues. “There are 400 exercises you can try.” Her client success stories include a 79-year-old man who had bypass surgery and tight hamstrings who was able to fix his muscle issues without surgery. And that list goes on and on. “Everybody’s issues are different. We ask them about their goals and go from there,” McLean explains. “When you feel like you can move, your whole life is better.” Her business partner, Frankie Romano, joined the team in February 2015. He brought experience from working in physical therapy and training athletes, along with personal trainer certifications. He also works with clients who want to strength train in a different room in the studio. “It works every muscle in the body

It’s that intimate, comfortable setting and results that keep people coming back, McLean says. She’d like to have more studio locations in the future, but right now, McLean and her team are currently focused on perfecting the current business. Each training session lasts an hour and costs $35, and the first one is free. Surgery Center Procedures Anesthesiologist addresses spinal pain solutions Story by ROBERT NESBITT Photograph CONTRIBUTED

A

nyone of any age can experience chronic back pain — from those weekend warriors to young athletes. My colleagues and I have been treating patients of all types, fitness levels and ages for years at Nesbitt Pain Associates. We’ve recently extended our practice to now see patients at the brand new St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Surgery Center, which is part of the new expansion on the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen campus. I want those do-it-yourselfers, retirees and even young athletes to know there are effective, nonsurgical ways to address stubborn back pain. Our team of anesthesiologists, specializing in interventional pain management, work primarily with spine problems. Our goal is to get patients as pain-free as possible with minimally invasive procedures. We may refer patients for physical, massage or chiropractic therapy. If treatments are necessary, we have many options available to treat different spine problems. Each patient is evaluated to determine whether they need diagnostic testing, physical therapy or referral to a spine surgeon. Patients typically are referred by their primary care physician, spine surgeon or chiropractor. For those patients, longterm relief can start with an anesthesiologistadministered injection. We see some patients who may have recently injured themselves exercising or playing golf. But many of our patients have had multiple surger-

ies and are not candidates for additional surgery. Our primary focus is figuring out the problem and then using the best possible treatment. We have many tools in our toolbox to help lessen pain. But for those patients who do require surgery, we are happy to now be offering our services at the state-of-the-art surgery center at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Because One Nineteen is part of the St. Vincent’s Health System, there is accountability — everyone has to be credentialed. St. Vincent’s has a great system in place. We’ve been working within that system for years, and we’re grateful for the protections they provide patients and the opportunity to serve new patients. Our main goal is to make people aware that back pain can happen to anyone, and when it does, we are there to help get them back doing those activities they love to do, and doing them painfree. To learn more about the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen surgery center and its “Healthcare Like No Other” services, visit Onenineteen.com. l Robert Nesbitt, MD, is a physician with Nesbitt Pain Associates at St. Vincent’s. tanding on the wrap-around porch at Windwood Equestrian, it’s hard to wrap your mind around the fact that it was two small pieces of paper that put the striking property on the map. A ticket to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. And then a piece of notebook paper. William Upton grins when he talks about it. With the exception of a couple of rides on an old farm horse when he was younger, he’d never been in the saddle before he watched the equestrian portion of the Olympics in Atlanta at 15 years old. But after the Games, he came back to the Birmingham area and started taking lessons immediately. “It was something that kind of consumed me,” he says. And it wasn’t long before he was riding competitively, winning shows and eventually sketching out the plans for Windwood on a piece of notebook paper. He started building it in 2002 just off highway 11 in Pelham, and now 14 years later, he and his wife Arden live right in the center of the sprawling equestrian center that looks more country club than country. They host around 25 to 30 weddings a year. Arden says it’s a “pretty busy thing” for them that started because of their own wedding. “William and I built all of the things we had hoped for our own wedding, and now we offer it to other people,” she says. At night, the stone courtyard is “stunning” and “comes alive,”

LEFT: Currently, 37 horses live on the property. RIGHT: They’ve had riders from 4 to 70 years old.

William says, lit by strings of café lights and lit-up cupolas and offering a live-music stage. They’ve hosted crowds of up to 600 people in the courtyard, which has an Italian fountain just in the center. And it’s flanked by three luxury barns, rolling grass meadows and well-maintained outdoor riding facilities that are currently home to 37 horses. “I started the riding school as a business when I was a freshman in college,” William says. “I drew the whole place on a piece of notebook paper, and we’ve just been working to finish that dream ever since. It’s just evolved and evolved.” He’s taken pride in the way he’s put every detail together. His own office is made with wood beams from Andrew Jackson’s farm. The hay is shipped in by the 18-wheeler load from Kentucky. The footing in the riding rings is a specially made mixture of felt, sand and fiber. Jill Dean, one of Windwood’s riding instructors, says that last detail alone makes such a difference. “It’s spectacular footing — the ring can be under water, and we can still ride on it. William knew that because he researched intensely and planned well,” she says. “We are fortunate that William had the dream of Windwood.” Construction is one of Williams’ passions: Horseback riding is too. And it’s easy to see how the two passions met at Windwood. “We love offering this as a place for people to come and fall in love with the sport,” William says. “Riding can be a lifelong venture.” They’ve had riders from 4 years old to 70 years old, he adds. July 2016 | 23

“We build our lessons and classes in such a way that it’s personalized and fun for everyone involved,” he says. Jill agreed and adds they see progress in the riders with every lesson. “They work hard and have a lot of time in the saddle,” she says. “We have a system that works. We want your leg to be solid, deep and tight at the level where you are before we move you to the next one.” Windwood’s riders who choose to compete consistently win ribbons, William says. 24 | ShelbyLiving.com

It’s also a sport that enhances riders’ lives. “Often when kids get involved with riding, it consumes them, and when you have something like that to be involved in, it keeps you out of trouble, teaches you responsibility and you get to interact with other people and learn teamwork.” Riders from beginner to expert are welcome, he says, and prices are competitive with other riding schools in the area. Windwood offers lessons for dressage, hunters and jumpers. “All of the riding is classically trained,” Arden

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: The design for Windwood came about from a sketch William drew on notebook paper. William and Arden Upton are the owners of Windwood Equestrian in Pelham. They offer lessons for beginners to experts.

says. Windwood has horses for use in the riding school, but boarding and training is also available at the facilities. “We want to be a quality riding school, but we are also down to earth and approachable,” he says. “We want this to be a place where people can come and enjoy being here.” And they do, if you’re judging by the kids’ faces, Arden says.

“To me, the cutest, most adorable thing you’ll see on a daily basis is when the little girls come out and start lessons in a hunter style,” she says. “During their first lesson, their eyes are huge, and the grin on their face is the most adorable thing you’ve ever seen. They see the ponies, and they hug them. They love it. And we love making that possible.” For more information, visit Windwoodequestrian.com. l July 2016 | 25

Students learn swimming skills and teamwork Story by SAMANTHA HURST Photographs courtesy of GREYSTONE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

eat waves haven’t yet begun to hazily ripple over the pool at Brook Highlands Country Club when Hayden Desmond’s body cuts through the

water. It’s only 8:15 on a Monday morning in June. Other soon-to-be high school seniors yank closed curtains and groggily tug thin, cotton sheets back over their eyes to slowly sink back to sleep. Desmond, meanwhile, pulls at the water and propels himself forward.

26 | ShelbyLiving.com

“I think the big thing that motivates me is that someone somewhere is always working harder than me,” Desmond says of rising early for daily practices throughout the summer. “I want to work harder than them.” Desmond joined the 120-member Brook Highland Marlins swim team two years ago. He’d never swum competitively, though he took lessons as a kid. Many of Desmond’s teammates have never swum competitively either. Brook Highland established the Marlins in 1991 and continues to offer 4-to 18-yearolds the chance to swim competitively in the Jefferson Shelby Swim Council (JSSC).

“Anyone can jump in the water in swim,” Desmond says. “It doesn’t matter how tall you are, how short you are — swimming is for any kid who wants to give it a try.” Marlins coach Dawn Todd champions that mindset. Kids can begin swimming competitively as long as they can swim the length of the pool, she says. Many kids get involved around 7-8 years old, learning the basic forms. They slowly work through all the strokes, Todd says, and begin really making a difference on the team. “Swimming is not a sport where you have to sit on the sidelines. For the little bitty kids that are taking 2 minutes to swim down the pool — they still get to compete,” Todd says. “They also still get all the other good stuff as we work on building comaraderie as a team.” A total of 22 teams and more than 2,000 swimmers participate in meets through the JSSC. Another of those teams is Greystone Country Club’s Gators. The Gators boast a roster of 72 swimmers, aged 4-16 years old. Coach Alan Parsons agrees that any kid can find their place in the pool. “Even a child that is not great at other sports may become the best swimmer,” Parsons says. “Swimming is all about technique, so any kid that works hard enough can improve.” Parsons, who joined Greystone’s swim team at age 9, continues to swim competitively. A college junior, Parsons swims on scholarship for Limestone College in South Carolina.

“I’ve always loved the aspect of racing. You do the training, and you do the work so it really takes a lot of self-discipline,” Parsons says. “You get to see what you personally can push yourself to do.” By the end of the summer, Desmond aims to shed a few seconds off his times. He wants to get his 50-yard breaststroke under 30 seconds and his individual medley under 1 minute. Achieving these goals won’t be easy. Improving times in the water involves turning a bit faster, getting your arms out of the water more quickly and kicking more powerfully. “It’s all you — it’s whether or not you’ve put in the time and effort, whether or not you’ve perfected the technique and whether or not you have the drive to do your best,” Todd says of swimming competitively. Comaraderie doesn’t dissipate in this individualized sport though. Parsons says it creates a bond when a swimmer sees his or her teammates striving to be the best they can be too. Desmond agrees as he said another aspect of competitive swimming is the ability to serve as a

role model to younger kids. “Being a leader plays into that and being able to go out there and tell the kid that hasn’t won a race yet this year, ‘You can do it.’ I think that is one of the main reasons that Brook Highland is so successful,” he says. Jenn Hale’s two daughters Allie, 7, and Emmie, 5, began competing several years ago. Originally, Hale wanted her kids to be safer

in the water. Soon, she realized they couldn’t get enough of the water. “I wanted my kids to not only be able to get from point A to point B,” Hale says. “I wanted them to get stronger as little girls and build confidence.” She also liked the idea of building a competitive spirit in her daughters. The collection of ribbons — first place down to third place — has proved exciting for both Allie and Emmie. Simply jumping in the water alongside friends and the older swimmers they look up to has also been thrilling, Hale adds. “When you get [Allie] in the water, it is almost like she knows she belongs there,” she says. “It makes her feel like, ‘Hey, I’m important; I’m a valuable member of the team; people are encouraging me.” Hale now swims competitively herself; getting pulled in after her daughters became hooked. Their family loves being at the pool and now even getting to attend some meets together as a family. “It’s a lifetime sport. You’re not likely to play football when you are 40, but you can still swim when you are 40,” Todd says. There are other programs around Jefferson and Shelby counties for kids to dive into swimming at a competitive level. Chris Honeycutt, with the Alabas-

ter YMCA, says the Stingrays average about 25 kids per season: fall, spring and summer. This program, during the summer, also gives kids a daily avenue to push themselves athletically and be a part of a team. For more information about these programs, visit Bhrctennis.com/pool/swim-team; Gogreystonegators.com and Ggametime.com/branch/alabaster. l

Families, friends and other swimmers enjoy watching the competitions.

Some Gave All Alabama National Cemetery honors fallen heroes Story by GRACE THORNTON Photographs CONTRIBUTED

n 479 grassy acres in Montevallo, the Alabama sun beats down on thousands of symmetrically arranged white headstones, glinting off of a number of pennies, nickels and quarters sitting on top. “Those coins have significance,” says Herman Watkins, program specialist for Alabama National Cemetery, as he wanders slowly around the graves. “They let us know who’s been to pay their respects to the veterans buried here.” Usually a penny means someone came to visit,

and a nickel means they trained together at boot camp. A dime means the visitor served with the deceased in some capacity. And a quarter means the person was with the deceased when he or she was killed. “Sometimes the coins can mean a little something different to the person who placed them,” he says. “But no matter what, they have significance, and they honor the person who’s buried there.” And honoring the person who served is exactly why Alabama National Cemetery exists — and why Watkins finds purpose in working there, he says. “These veterans, they’ve born the burden of our country, so we want to help bear their burden by

honoring their memory and helping their family.” Burial is a costly experience, he says, and Alabama National Cemetery offers headstones, vaults and perpetual care to the families of any veteran who was discharged honorably. “This is one of the things our country can do to take care of the ones who sacrificed for us,” Watkins says. When a veteran is buried at the Alabama National Cemetery, taps — Herman Watkins are played under one of the pavilions, and the honor guard folds the flag for the family and thanks them for their relative’s service to the nation. “Imagine being a mother whose child died in Afghanistan or Iraq, getting that visit to let them

know their son or daughter has been killed,” Watkins says. “We have several here like that. It’s so hard on the family. There’s a price that comes with war. And we want to make it as honoring to their sacrifice as we can.” It’s a special service for Watkins, who as a medic and hospital coordinator for the Navy prepared the bodies of deceased soldiers overseas to send them back to America for burial. He served that way for 28 years before finding himself at the Alabama National Cemetery. He’s been there since before it was open. “Death is such a hard thing, but you can look at this beautiful place in a positive light — that it’s taking care of and honoring our veterans the way that they deserve to be honored,” Watkins says. “That’s the way I look at it. I’m glad to be here and proud to serve them.” Thousands of veterans have been interred at the

sprawling cemetery since it opened in 2009. “Sometimes, we have eight or nine burials a day,” Watkins says. In Section 9, which holds 1,000 cremation graves, 700 are already full. “And in Section 1 and 2, there are 4,000 graves. Section 1 is already almost full, and Section two will be in the next five or six months,” he says. And every day that there’s a burial, the big flag on the hill flies at half-staff. “We serve a purpose to our society as a shrine and final resting place for our heroes,” he says. A memorial wall also holds the names of those who were missing in action or had no remains to be buried, and a memorial walkway starts near the wall and ends up on a hill at a pole where a black POW flag flies. “It’s a meaningful place,” Watkins says. The acreage, which is even now being built out to hold more graves, is projected to accommodate more burials for about 50 years. Right now, Alabama National Cemetery has got room for cremation graves below ground, cremation vaults above ground and casket burials for veterans and their spouses and dependent children if needed. It also has a section up on the hill to which fami-

lies can move their loved ones from other cemeteries if they wish. “One man was in World War I, but his family kept his remains, and now he’s buried here,” Watkins says. It’s projected that the cemetery will be able to hold 200,000 veterans, spouses and children. For more information, visit Cem.va.gov/cems/ nchp/alabama.asp. l

The Gift of

Gabby Pelham-based indoor furniture line explodes in popularity 34 | ShelbyLiving.com

Story by AMY JONES Photographs courtesy of SUMMER CLASSICS

W

hile many Shelby County residents know — and likely own pieces by — the Pelham-based furniture company Summer Classics, not everyone knows that Summer Classics is now the biggest luxury outdoor furniture company in the United States. The company was founded in Pelham by Bew White in 1987, moving to larger facilities in Columbiana and then Montevallo before moving back to the Moore Handley building in Pelham, where it remains today. The company is now working to corner the indoor furniture market too, with the rise of Gabby, Summer

Classics’ indoor furniture and lighting line. Rob Robinson with Summer Classics says the Gabby line focuses on “transitional and eclectic furniture and lighting.” “We use unique materials like faux shagreen, horn and bone, cut stone like alabaster and onyx, parchment and vellum and metals with layered and distressed finishes,” Robinson says. “Each piece makes a compelling statement without overpowering a room.” Robinson says the Gabby line is often mixed with French and English antiques. In fact, the company’s buyers travel every year to find “inspirational pieces,” known as Unique Finds, which are offered for sale at company xtrade showrooms in

Dallas, Atlanta, Las Vegas and High Point, N.C. Robinson says Gabby is one of the fastest-growing furniture companies in the country. In 2014, the company was ranked by Inc. magazine as one of the Top 1,000 fastest-growing companies in America. “Very few if any furniture companies ever make this list,” Robinson says. Gabby’s sales numbers bear out that ranking, as Gabby is “without a doubt” Summer Classics’ most popular line right now. Sales were recently up by more than 40 percent, Robinson adds. Gabby, like Summer Classics, is truly a Shelby County company. “We design everything in Pelham, from pencil and paper to showroom

floor. We have a state of the art quality control lab and an in-house design department,” Robinson says. “Our corporate core values are near and dear to our hearts. We believe deeply in family, obsession with design, relentless attention to detail, integrity, pace and exceptional business results.” While Summer Classics was founded by Bew White, Gabby was founded in 2010 by his son, William White. “In 2008, Bew was encouraging his children to get to know more about the business. We imported antiques to create a look in our 13 retail stores. It was a very difficult business to manage, but it seemed to tempt William,” Robinson says. “After just two years of studying the indoor furniture market, writing a business plan and developing a line of new products, William opened the first Gabby showroom in April of 2010. It was an instant

success, even in the pit of a crippling recession.” William White didn’t have to look far to find the perfect name for the new furniture line. “William named the company after his grandmother, Gabriella Comer White. The matriarch of the family was worldly, well-spoken and strong in her faith, making a deep impression on William,” Robinson says. Even though Summer Classics made its name by focusing on outdoor furniture, the Gabby line brings balance to the company with its focus on the indoor furniture market. Gabby furniture is designed to be transitional, which means it is equally at home with traditional or contemporary styles. “It makes our overall company healthier,” says Robinson, who added he believes the Gabby line is so popular because “it is a sophisticated, high-style look at an incredible value.”

ombining Asian and American tastes, Blowfish Sushi has unique dishes residents won’t find just anywhere. And the idea for this new restaurant came from Huy Nguyen and his first job. Like most young adults, Nguyen was in need of work. It was during this search that someone offered him a job as a sushi helper at a restaurant. A year later, he was promoted to a sushi chef at just 22. With some experience under his belt, Nguyen and his friend opened a sushi bar in Mississippi together and ran it for nearly seven years. “Since I’ve had a job, it’s always been working as a sushi chef,” he says. “I’m doing what I’m good at.” He decided to go out on his own and moved to Birmingham, which also brought him closer to family. Nguyen and his wife, Oanh “Kim” Tran, opened Blowfish Sushi on Feb. 19 in the Lee Branch Shopping Center. July 2016 | 43

“I make American sushi,” he explains. “Some of the sushi rolls have no rice, which other restaurants don’t have.” He also has a chef with 16 years of experience with Thai food, and his wife has experience with Vietnamese food. “Together, we make our own Asian food,” Nguyen says. For customers who enjoy raw rolls, he says the Blowfish roll — which has spicy mayo, avocado, flake wrapped inside fresh tuna, salmon and topped — Huy Nguyen with eel sauce — is a popular choice. Another raw favorite is the AL roll, which has shrimp tempura, crab stick, cucumber, spicy tuna, eel sauce and spicy mayo. “We have some special rolls like the Blowfish roll or Ramen noodles with fried soft eggs that people can’t find somewhere else,” Nguyen says.

“We have a casual, warm and cozy atmosphere with friendly service.”

If you respond the same way to everyone then you are not responding to anyone. Have you ever had a conversation with someone you connected with immediately? Feels good, right? How about someone you clearly did not connect with? How did that feel? Join us for this interactive workshop where you will: Learn the Universal Language of DISC. Learn the key characteristics, identifiers as well as the do’s and don’ts for each of the 4 DISC Behavioral styles.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

Dr. Lewis Brooks:

‘This is such a great place to raise a family and work.’

B

Photograph CONTRIBUTED efore becoming the Shelby County Schools assistant superintendent in 2012, Dr. Lewis Brooks served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and middle school coordinator in the school system. He first came to Shelby County in 1984 to attend the University of Montevallo. Brooks and his wife Resia have two sons: Jordan, a senior at the University of North Alabama, and Justin, a junior at the University of Alabama.

What was your first job? I got my first job when I was 16 at a restaurant called the Battle Buffet in Hoover. I served as a bus boy cleaning tables. Ironically, years later in my first teaching job at Vincent Middle/High School, I taught the granddaughter of Mr. Battle, the owner of the restaurant. Interestingly enough, that same student, Lauren Battle Yancey, works as a program specialist at the district office now. Why did you decide to go into education? I always enjoyed children, and they seemed to be drawn to me. It is still that way today. I also wanted to impact young people as I had been impacted by so many teachers and coaches. What’s your favorite part about being the assistant superintendent? The aspect that I enjoy the most as the assistant superintendent is problem solving. My role provides me the opportunity to address many different issues, and I enjoy the process of making the best decisions that ultimately benefit our students. How would you describe the Shelby County School system? Shelby County Schools has some of the 82 | ShelbyLiving.com

brightest educational minds leading this system and some of the best teachers in the state. We are a collaborative group that is always seeking the most innovative ways to serve our students. We are a family. What do you love about Shelby County? I love the people. This is such a great place to raise a family and work. I also love the collaboration between the various agencies around the county that make this such a great place. Whether it’s the schools, the county commission or other entities, there is a spirit of working together for the best interest of the county. In other words, there is a strong sense of community. What do you like to do in your free time? I coach travel basketball, and I still play in recreational leagues. I am also involved with several organizations as a volunteer. What’s something most people don’t

know about you? Most people don’t know that I love music. Even though I don’t play an instrument, I have a deep appreciation for musicianship. I also collect old vinyl, especially jazz. You can find me in record stores looking for some of the classic jazz albums. It is a fun hobby. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? As a kid, I decided I wanted to be a doctor. I especially wanted to be a physical therapist but realized during college that it was not my calling. What’s your favorite book? My favorite book is “An Easy Burden” by Andrew Young. In 2013, I had the honor of meeting Andrew Young, and he gave me a signed copy of his book. I love the book because it discusses the struggle for equality for all men through the difficult times of the 1950s and 1960s. While it was not easy during those times, he indicates in the book that it was necessary. The book describes his life’s journey, which is very intriguing. l
