FROM THE EDITOR

W

hat can you do? This question can be framed in a positive or negative tone, depending on your attitude. Let’s use the positive version today. What can you do? What can you do, with the abilities you possess, in the community in which you’ve been placed, with the time you’ve been given? I’m willing to bet you can do more than you think. That goes for all of us. This question came to mind as I was reading back through the story in this issue about Sadler McKeen, a recent graduate of Briarwood Christian School. Sadler has gone to great lengths––in the pool and in life, in general––to be successful. He excelled in his Honors and Advanced Placement classes in high school, while holding various leadership roles in school organizations and staying active in his church youth group. In the pool, Sadler has doused any

doubts about his wellroundedness with state championship titles, an all-time state record and an invitation to swim at the University of Notre Dame starting in the fall. And he has accomplished all of this in spite of a rare foot condition called tarsal coalition. When his doctor told him in the seventh grade that an abnormal connection between two bones in his foot would keep him from participating in any sports that require running, Sadler skipped the pity party and instead began pouring all of his energy into swimming, a sport he had already been involved with for many years. Instead of dwelling on what he was told he couldn’t do, Sadler dove into what he could do, and he did it well. I was inspired by this young man’s spirit of perseverance. The next time you and I are faced with the question of what we can do in a less-than-ideal situation, I hope we can remember Sadler and follow his lead. l

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Garage organization

G

arages aren’t just for cars anymore. Today, garages are a flex space and everyone in the family uses this area to store things like extra dog and bird food, 20 rolls of paper towels and paint drop cloths, cans of soda and motor oil, shoes of all sizes and hiking Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, boots, along with the traditional lawn Simpleworks.guru equipment, golf clubs, coolers and lisa@simpleworks.guru toys. It’s time to organize this outdoor 205.981.7733 closet. Getting started. Take everything out of the garage. Sweep out the garage floor, clear cobwebs from ceilings and repair any loose shelving or holes. Sort and categorize. Begin by sorting “like with like.” Put all the sporting equipment, camping gear, holiday decorations, etc., together. Take time to look everything over. You’ll have four piles: move, donate, trash and keep. If you have something that doesn’t have a home in the garage, put it back where it belongs. Location. Now that you have determined what’s staying, ask yourself how often you’ll need access to it. If you only use the items once a year, like holiday decorations, store them in the back or out of the way. Storage solutions. There are many storage solutions available: shelves, peg boards, hooks, tool racks, etc. Try to keep as much off the floor as possible to reduce clutter so you will have room for the cars. Built-in cabinets can keep things behind closed doors so you do not have to look at fishing poles and baseball bats all the time. Containers. Storage containers come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Plastic bins can either be clear, so you can see inside, or they come in colors to help hide the contents. Plastic is crush and critter-proof and keeps contents cleaner than cardboard boxes, which can break down due to humidity. Clutter costs us not only thousands of dollars in rental fees, but costs us the time it takes to clean out our garages. Garage organization is the fastest-growing segment in the home organization industry. Many guests enter homes through garages, which makes this space the first thing that they see. Think of how it’ll feel to get in and out of your car in the coolness of your garage versus the scalding heat of your driveway. It’s that simple. l

Thousands enjoy 2017 Buck Creek Festival The rain held off on Friday, May 12, and a few passing showers on Saturday, May 13, made for pleasant and cooler temperatures for the 16th annual Buck Creek Festival in Helena. Thousands of families, friends, residents and visitors alike roamed the grounds of the Helena Amphitheater to enjoy dozens of vendors, food, drinks and of course plenty of live musical entertainment. Ten musical groups performed on the festival stage, kicking off with the first group at 6 p.m. May 12 and concluded with Morgan Wallen as the final performance at 9 p.m. the following day. Sandwiched between the musical acts and vendors was the legendary duck race in which thousands of yellow rubber ducks swept down Buck Creek. The duck race began May 13 at 3 p.m., and plenty of people who had a duck in the race, or just came to watch, lined the

banks of Buck Creek to see the festival tradition. A cannon sounded and the automatic dumper dumped thousands of rubber ducks into Buck Creek as one lucky person saw their duck cross the finish line first.

Last year, the Buck Creek Festival raised $26,420 in total funds that was divided among multiple charities and organizations, and the Buck Creek Festival committee is hoping the amount raised is greater in 2017.

Elvin Hill kids celebrate leadership

Color the Ridge Run a success More than 250 participants turned up for Pelham Ridge Elementary’s first Color the Ridge Run on Saturday, April 29, at Fun Go Holler Park. “The turnout is definitely above what we expected for our first time,” physical education teacher Tammy Causey said. “It’s been successful.” The color run featured a 5K and a 1-mile fun run. Causey said a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the American Heart Association and the rest will benefit the school. “As a school, we’re promoting a healthy lifestyle and we wanted to donate to a charity that we feel has the same values,” Causey said. “We connect lessons about healthy

lifestyles to our P.E. curriculum and we teach lifelong healthy habits. We want this to become an annual event for our school and we hope to expand it in the years to come.” Pelham resident Ashlee Best and her second-grade son Cole Jones, who attends Pelham Ridge, participated in the 5K. Best said that was the first time she and her son participated in a color run. “I really enjoyed it,” Best said. “I loved that there were people of all athletic abilities participating in the event. You could tell that the purpose of the event was to increase awareness about the importance of being healthy. The purpose was for everybody to get out and be active. I’m definitely coming back next year.”

The families of Elvin Hill Elementary School students got a glimpse of what their kids are learning at the third annual Leadership Day on May 5. “It shows the parents what we’re doing every day to prepare the whole child. It gives parents the chance to see students in leadership roles,” Principal Betsy Smith said. During Leadership Day, students led an opening assembly, conducted a tour around the school for visitors and hosted a student-led question-and-answer panel to discuss the importance of leadership at their school. Smith said Leadership Day is part of The Leader in Me program, which is an international initiative to promote leadership, responsibility and other positive character traits in schools. Smith said Leadership Day also served as a way for students to teach the community about “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” a book written by Stephen Covey and used in the curriculum at EHES.

Married Art

Mike and Jan Sherwood collaborate on multimedia artwork at EclectArt Studios Story by EMILY SPARACINO Photographs by DAWN HARRISON hen Mike and Jan Sherwood told the story of how they started making art together several weeks ago, they shared an invisible microphone. Clutching cups of steaming coffee at a booth inside Alabaster’s Panera Bread on a Monday morning, they took turns talking about their backgrounds and current work, often adding onto each other’s statements to round out each part of

the story. Tag-teaming the conversation was second nature to the Alabaster couple, as second nature as creating what they call “Married Art.” Mike and Jan own EclectArt Studios, where they collaborate on multimedia pieces, including acrylic and watercolor paintings and graphite drawings. “We work on the same pieces,” Jan said. In a nutshell, a piece of the Sherwoods’ Married Art isn’t complete until both Jan and Mike have worked on it. “We kind of fell into making Married Art,” Mike

said. “I don’t know if it’s the aesthetics of the art or the concept, but it’s propelled us.” The themes, colors, illustrations and details that appear in the couple’s artwork are as varied and interesting as the story of how they met, married and started down the path of making and selling artwork together. Mike, a native of upstate New York, opened a restaurant in Alabaster known to locals as Tasty Dog in 1989. Jan is originally from the San Francisco Bay area. Her father grew up in Oakland, California, and her mother in Alabama. “We would come here to Alabama in the summers to visit my grandparents,” Jan said of her family. When she was in her 20s, Jan decided to take a break and come to Alabama, not intending to stay long; however, she discovered the University of

Alabama at Birmingham’s dance program, and her visit turned into a move. She majored in dance and minored in art at UAB. Prior to that, she danced and performed at the Montgomery School of Fine Arts, now known as the Alabama Dance Theatre, and Auburn University at Montgomery. She eventually opened her dance studio, Southern Dance Arts, across the street from Mike’s second restaurant, Michael J’s Deli, in Alabaster. “I would go over and have lunch or breakfast,” Jan said. “We would sit and talk. We became best friends.” And the two remained friends for 13 years before they dated and got married. They have five grown children and five grandchildren, with one more on the way. Time ushered in many changes for the couple; restaurant closures and openings, the relocation of

Southern Dance Arts to its current location on Simmsville Road and Mike’s stint on the Alabaster City Council. After Mike’s third restaurant My Peeps closed, he and Jan picked up artwork again. “Jan has an art minor, and I was a graphic design major,” Mike said. “We started painting and drawing again. We started experimenting and doing things together. We took some things to an auction and made more than we made in a week at the restaurant.” The Married Art was born from piles of wood and Mike’s and Jan’s individual turns captaining a paintbrush. “We tore our deck down about four years ago and had piles of wood,” Mike said. “I started painting on the wood. I would hand it back to Jan, she’d do something on it and she’d hand it back to me. After a while, it started looking like art.” Sometimes, they discuss plans for a piece before they start, particularly for a commissioned piece, but often, they just start painting and passing. “The grain or texture of the wood may dictate what we do,” Mike said. “We use a lot of color.” “Sometimes, we pass it back and forth, and you can’t tell who did what,” Jan added. Subjects for their paintings vary, but common elements seen throughout their artJuly 2017 | 11

work include trees, eyes and intricate patterns. Works by artists like Salvador Dalí inspire them, too. “We love trees,” Mike said. “We’re products of the ’60s and ’70s. I’ve done hundreds of chunks of suspended land.” “And eyes,” Jan said. “It’s really what’s in our heads. Someone described it as ‘dream art.’” The couple sells all original pieces; they don’t produce identical duplicates or prints of any works. “People can have something similar, but they will not be the same,” Jan said. Because of their pieces’ originality, Mike and Jan are somewhat limited in their gallery showings. “We haven’t had a surplus of items we can extend,” Mike said. “We don’t make prints. We believe that everybody should have an original piece of art.” Jan said they can usually sense when someone is drawn to a specific piece.

“Art, and our choreography, is an expression of what’s going on in our heads” — Jan Sherwood “More often than not, certain pieces are meant for certain people,” she said. “We’ve had married couples get their first piece of art from us. People have saved up for a year to commission a large piece.” The vibrancy of colors in the Sherwoods’ paintings is often the first thing that draws people in, Mike said. “Art’s very personal,” he said. “If someone sees something that moves them, we make sure they get it. We make a way for people to have something.” Selling their pieces can be emotional for Mike and Jan, too. Since they only create originals, once

they sell something, they likely won’t see it again. “We get attached to certain pieces,” Jan said. “Our kids probably have more art than anybody.” But, as Mike said, “You’ve got to go with what your heart tells you.” “For the right person to get a piece, that makes all the difference,” he said. The couple has traveled to art shows in the Atlanta and Cartersville, Georgia areas and Huntsville. They have looked into shows in Asheville, North Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; St. Augustine, Florida; the Keys; and San Francisco, and will be in Chattanooga, Tennessee, later this year. Their Border Collie, Journey, accompanies them on the trips. They have to balance their travel schedule with the dance studio. “We really have worked well with coordinating the dance studio with traveling,” Jan said. “(Art has) really allowed us to travel to places we wouldn’t normally have spent time in. We’ve made friends in different communities through our art.” Most of the shows Mike and Jan participate in are juried. July 2017 | 13

Beyond awards and sales, they enjoy talking to people who visit their booth. “When we’re out, we love to share,” Mike said. “It’s motivational for us to do that.” After each show they attend, Mike and Jan pick out somebody who made the biggest impression on them that weekend. They truly enjoy connecting with people through their art. “We wouldn’t be able to do that if our art didn’t draw them in,” Mike said. “You never know who you might help.” Jan’s dance studio keeps them busy, and like EclectArt Studios, is a family business. She and her daughter teach dance full-time. “Whatever we do, it’s truly a family industry, a family business, and always will be,” Mike said. The studio dance has served as a scouting hub for the Southeast recently. Jan said TinaMarie Holland, owner of NY-LANASH Entertainment and Talent America, was slated to lead an acting and musical theater workshop at Southern Dance Arts this summer. “I’ve always had kids that have gone on to pro-

fessional careers and college dance programs,” Jan said. “These kids are excelling in everything they do. Seeing them develop is so inspiring to me.” Somehow, the couple also finds time to operate a fundraising company. Mike is a trained auctioneer, and he and Jan hold four or five charity auctions for local organizations each year. Jan said the best reward from the dance and art studios is the inspiration they produce. “Art, and our choreography, is an expression of what’s going on in our heads,” she said, adding the attention the Married Art has received is unexpected. “We are amazed. We didn’t expect this attention. We just really love doing it, and we’re just shocked sometimes.” Mike agreed, and said they’ve been humbled by the experience. “This year has just been prolific. Our art has kicked in very strong,” he said. “It’s our life. It’s not what we do; it’s who we are.” For more information about EclectArt Studios, go to the following Facebook page: Mikeandjan Eclectartstudios Sherwood. Inverness welcomes Dreamland Bar-B-Que

Story by EMILY SPARACINO Photographs by DAWN HARRISON ince opening its doors in late March, Dreamland Bar-B-Que in Inverness has served more than 9,000 slabs of ribs and more than 12,000 servings of banana pudding. Such high numbers suggest people living nearby or driving past the restaurant aren’t just hungry; they are hungry for the hickory-smoked pork spare ribs upon which Dreamland’s reputation rests. And they wouldn’t mind some banana pudding, either. “We’ve been doing really well out there,” Marketing Coordinator Sarah Drexler said of the Inverness location – Dreamland’s second restaurant

S

in the Birmingham area – in the former Chili’s location off U.S. 280 in the Inverness Corners shopping center. CEO Betsy McAtee opened the restaurant’s doors for business following a two-week soft opening phase, which drew a positive response from the community. “It went really, really well,” Drexler said. “We did a lot of business strictly by word of mouth, which means citizens of Hoover and the 280 corridor were really having a hankering for some Dreamland.” Drexler, who handles marketing efforts for all 10 Dreamland locations in Alabama, Georgia and Florida, along with the company’s online store and food truck, said Inverness was a natural fit for what the company wanted to accomplish with its

newest restaurant. “We really wanted to open another location in the Birmingham area, but we wanted to be in the areas where families are and the schools we support,” she said. Drexler said adequate and convenient parking was a major factor in Dreamland’s decision to open in Inverness, and noted the Southside location of Dreamland – a 24-year staple in one of Birmingham’s most well-known historic communities – doesn’t offer patrons the most favorable parking options, as some spaces require crossing

“Each barbecue restaurant has its own flair and spin they bring to the table.” — Sarah Drexler one or more streets to walk to the restaurant. “The parking isn’t the best situation in Southside,” Drexler said. “If you’ve got little kids, it can get kind of stressful. The 280 location has a great,

nice parking lot.” In addition to more handicapped spaces and spaces near the door, the Inverness location offers new curbside to-go services in at least three parking spaces. “You don’t have to leave your car to pay or pick up,” Drexler said. “It’s a great option for people, and we’re on the right side of the road. It will be great for people going out to the lake and for people going down to Auburn in the fall. Just like stopping off to get some gas on the way, stop off and get your barbecue.” The building was completely renovated and refigured to include a barbecue pit before Dreamland opened. “Our pits are all located in the dining area,” Drexler said. “We want our guests to have that experience. You can go over and the pit master will let you turn the ribs, and people can ask questions. It’s kind of like dinner and a show.” With the tag line “Ain’t nothing like ‘em nowhere,” Dreamland prides itself on its ribs, drenched in the restaurant’s signature barbecue sauce. However, over the years, the menu has expanded to include chicken, pork, sides and even a new dessert called “Chocolate Dream,” a mouth-watering combination of Bud’s Best Cookies and chocolate pudding. “It’s some good stuff,” Drexler said. The bones of Dreamland that started it all still stand in Tuscaloosa. A small, one-room building in the college town is where John “Big Daddy” Bishop opened the original Dreamland in 1958, the same year Paul “Bear” Bryant started coaching football at the University of Alabama. “We’ve got our deep sports roots,” Drexler said, adding the Inverness location features memorabilia from local high schools. “We want customers out there to feel like it’s a second home to them.” The Inverness restaurant includes a retail area, where passionate patrons can purchase Dreamland T-shirts, sauce by the quart and other frozen products to enjoy later. Even if patrons can’t dine in, they can pick up or have food items shipped to their homes. “We’ll ship ribs, pork, chicken and the dry goods all over the country,” Drexler said. Dreamland also operates concessions locations throughout the Southeast, including states like Tennessee and Mississippi that don’t have Dreamland storefronts. For more information about Dreamland, visit Dreamlandbbq.com. Dreamland Bar-B-Que in Inverness is located at 101 Inverness Corners. The general manager is Richard Uzzle. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. To reach the restaurant by phone, call (205) 820-7427. “Each barbecue restaurant has its own flair and spin they bring to the table,” Drexler said. “Nobody else compares. We do think there was a definite need for our style of barbecue out there.” l 20 | ShelbyLiving.com

Herbs with a purpose It takes a village to provide HOPE to the masses

S

chool is out for the summer – but for some teachers and students, work doesn’t stop. Especially when they are in the business of providing HOPE. Last year, Dustin Cleckler’s Agriscience classes at Shelby County High School in Columbiana joined Marisol Lilly’s Special Education students in a joint business venture with Keith Richards’ Taziki’s Mediterranean Café. When you next visit one of these popular restaurants in the Birmingham area and enjoy one of their signature dishes, you will likely benefit from these students’ labor. HOPE – Herbs OfferRene’ Day, A Day in the Life Antiques, ing Personal Vintage, and Design Enrichment ADayintheLifeal@ – began two gmail.com years ago with a conversation between Richards and Shelby County Schools career coach Cindy Vincent. His restaurants needed locally sourced fresh herbs and her students needed real-world learning experiences. It was a match made in heaven and has since expanded from Alabama to Nashville, Tennessee. The concept is simple. In school garden plots and greenhouses, students with special needs are paired with Agriscience students to grow herbs such as basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary and cilantro. They then harvest, weigh, bag and deliver them to Taziki’s. Students also handle all the invoicing and money collection. Earnings go back into the school programs to improve classroom facilities and curriculum.

Shelby County High School students are sowing seeds of HOPE.

Any excess herbs are either sold locally or used in the school cafeteria. The students are learning “on the job” in this collaborative venture that continues to earn recognition for its innovative approach to “life-skills” education. However, it often takes a “village” to bring HOPE. Cleckler is quick to point out that assistance for the program came from a variety of sources. The Taziki’s partnership required a new greenhouse at the school and donations from Shelby County Career Technical Education, Shelby County Farmers Federation, CAWACO, Shelby County Cattlemen’s Association, the Novella Club, Shelby County Juvenile Court and the City of Columbiana helped make it possible. Shelby County Schools even allowed vacant portions of land next to the Board of Education to be used for raised planting beds. Recently, the program expanded to include the use of aquaponics to help raise some of the herbs. The plants use fish waste from on-site tilapia

pools as nutrients and, in turn, provide clean water for the fish. Harvesting of tilapia will begin in the fall. It brings sustainable food cultivation full circle. This business of HOPE is even providing some summer income to local students who have been hired to take care of the plants during the school hiatus. Supervised by the teachers, these learners will gain additional work experience and job skills in addition to the extra money. It is a win-win situation for all involved. And, the program provides inspiration for other schools and school systems. Cleckler notes, “The growth of the program has attracted visitors from schools around the Southeast. Many of them hear about what we’re doing, come to visit, and return to start their own programs. Meeting other school leaders inspires us to improve our program and we are anxious to see it spread nationwide.” Indeed, we are HOPE-ful that it will. l July 2017 | 23

isciplined, motivated, hardworking, goal-oriented, driven and creative are the first words 18-year-old Sadler McKeen’s mother used to describe him. “From the time he was very young, he always worked real hard to do what he needed to do,” Alison McKeen said of Sadler, who graduated from Briarwood Christian School in May. He has done what he’s needed to do, and more, to stand out in each area of his life, it seems. Well-rounded could be added to the list of at-

tributes that define the North Shelby teen. In academics, Sadler excelled in the Honors and Advanced Placement classes he chose to take in high school. At the end of his senior year, he held a 4.57 grade point average and earned an honors diploma. He also held multiple leadership roles in school and community organizations throughout his high school career. Sadler served as president of the Student Government Association his senior year, vice president of fundraising (treasurer) his junior year, freshman class president and was co-chair of Briarwood’s and Spain Park High School’s Relay For Life event his junior year.

“We helped raise money and get sponsors for the event, and we helped run the event,” Sadler said. He was a member of National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club). Sadler said his favorite subjects in school are physics and math, but added, “There are not many classes I don’t like.” But for someone to fully understand and appreciate Sadler’s work ethic and success, his swimming must enter the conversation. Sadler was captain of Briarwood’s swim team, and was a member of the club swim team at Life Time Fitness in Vestavia Hills. During his childhood, he swam briefly at the Greystone YMCA. Over the years, he competed at meets all over Birmingham, including the Senior County swim meet that was held in Hoover. “My first year of swimming was when I was 5 years old, summer swimming at Heatherwood Country Club,” he said.

That was 13 years ago, and swimming wasn’t the only sport he wanted to pursue. When he was in the seventh grade, Sadler tried running cross-country, but one of his ankles started giving him problems. Alison took him to the doctor, and X-rays revealed Sadler had tarsal coalition, a rare condition in which an abnormal connection forms between two bones in the foot. Tarsal coalition is hereditary and appears in adolescence, Alison said, but neither she nor her husband, Scott, have it. Sadler’s doctor told him that he wouldn’t be able to participate in sports involving running. Although the news was unexpected, he wasn’t out of options. Swimming, the sport he had embraced since he was 5, suddenly became his primary focus. “We felt like God had already prepared us for that news by having us in that sport,” Alison said. “We were thankful that it didn’t affect what

he loved to do.” Sadler said his favorite stroke is freestyle. Tarsal coalition complicates his breaststroke kick, so he avoids it and the individual medley (which includes the breaststroke) and focuses on the backstroke, freestyle and butterfly. All students that swim for the school swim year-round for a club team, and for two meets a year, they represent their high school, according to Alison, who is Briarwood’s swim team sponsor. “It’s been fun to watch,” she said of Sadler. “He’s put in a lot of hours.” His investment has produced a generous return. Sadler has won three state championships in the last two years and has been a finalist every year in high school and an automatic qualifier for the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association High School All-American in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. He is a two-time USA Swimming Academic All-American and is ranked as the top recruit in the state on Collegeswimming.com. He won the 500-yard freestyle as a junior at the state high school meet, and both the 500- and 200-yard freestyle as a senior. He holds the all-time state record 1A-7A in the 500-yard freestyle. 26 | ShelbyLiving.com

He serves as head swim coach at Inverness Country Club this summer. Sadler was among several students nominated by Briarwood faculty as “Senior Standouts” for the Shelby County Reporter’s graduation section. “This (record) is an amazing accomplishment alone, but combined with the numerous leadership roles and extracurricular involvement Sadler has, it can speak not only of his talent and dedication to his sport, but the ability to balance academics, leadership, service and athletics with remarkable excellence,” his nomination form read. “He’s very goal-oriented,” Alison added. “That’s one reason swimming worked so well with him. He was a strong math student … and being timed (in swimming), he responded very well to that from a young age.” Sadler’s success in swimming thus far has earned him a partial scholarship and a spot on the University of Notre Dame’s swim team. “He will have the opportunity to earn more money each year toward school,” Alison said. “They’ve set milestones for him he can achieve. Their coaches are fantastic. We’re excited about him having a chance to swim with them.” He also has been accepted into the university’s Mendoza College of Business. He said he is still contemplating his career choices, but is considering finance and law school. July 2017 | 27

Dr. Shawn Brower, Briarwood’s high school principal, called Sadler a “renaissance man in every way.” “He is a scholar, a gentleman, an athlete, a godly leader and a loyal friend who has great charisma, a winsome spirit and a personality that naturally attracts other people to him,” Brower wrote. “We have been extremely blessed at Briarwood Christian School to have a young man of such high character and stellar virtue as Sadler McKeen. We feel it an honor to be able to call him one of our students and alumni. We have high confidence that he will be successful

in whatever he pursues as he follows God’s call upon his life.” His Senior Standout nomination echoed Brower’s sentiments, describing Sadler as an “outstanding student and a role model to his peers.” “He has dedicated himself to helping others and improving the school environment at Briarwood High School through his involvement in numerous extracurricular activities,” his nomination form read. “In each of these roles, a level of character and integrity is necessary along with the ability to lead others. Sadler encompasses all of those attributes and many more. Sadler is a genuine leader

who others want to rally behind. There are some people in life who must work at being a leader and those who are born with the natural ability to lead, and that is Sadler.” Alison said Briarwood’s youth group has been a solid outlet for Sadler during his high school career, too. “As a parent, we are very thankful for the Briarwood youth group that he’s been involved with over the last four years,” she said. “He has had a lot of great mentors. I think his church involvement has helped make him who he is.” Sadler’s nomination form said his church, camp and volunteer service opportunities would fill a page if they were all listed. “Sadler McKeen truly is a one-of-a-kind student and athlete. He is full of compassion and grace for other students, always leading with an air of confidence but yet one of humility,” Director of Counseling Services Tara McNeal wrote. “His light shines bright at BCS. When I look at Sadler and all he has accomplished, I see a young man that emulates and exhibits all the qualities I hope my own children will one day possess. I have been blessed to be a small part of this remarkable young man’s journey.” As for Sadler, his response to everything he has achieved to this point is: “It feels good.” “It just shows that hard work pays off,” he said. “What problems you have, you work through them and persevere.” l July 2017 | 29

hen Catharine and David McBrayer of Vestavia were preparing for the birth of their second child four years ago, they were looking for a different hospital experience than they had with their first child. “We just wanted to make a change and a fresh

start,” Catharine, 33, said. As they researched options in the area, they spoke with Catharine’s father-in-law, Dr. John McBrayer, a cardiologist with Heart South Cardiovascular Group. “I asked him for recommendations of some doctors,” Catharine said. “He just said he was crazy about the group down at Shelby, and just made a suggestion if I wanted a fresh start, he

thought that would be a great place to be.” Catharine landed in the care of Dr. Ashley Gooding with Shelby Obstetrics and Gynecology, and when the time came for her to deliver Flynn in January 2013, she and David headed to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. “My husband and I were both very taken aback by the generosity and the consistency,” Catharine said. “All the nurses were well-informed. You were aware of the shift changes and who they were. Everyone was so kind.” Earlier this year, Catharine and David welcomed their third child, Mary Ross, at Shelby Baptist. Following their labor and delivery experience with Flynn, they knew they were going back to the right place. “Everything about this experience was wonderful both times,” Catharine said. “I feel like the nurses built a rapport with you so that you felt comfortable and at ease; every single nurse we had both times.” Catharine said one of the things she appreciated was the hospital was organized and didn’t rush her and David following their babies’ deliveries. “You weren’t inundated with tons of stuff right away,” she said. “You were given time to be taken to a room to recover before you were slammed with paperwork. experience, I felt like I had tons of paperwork right away.” Catharine described the atmosphere as “calming” and “comforting” after the delivery, and a lactation nurse visited her room to ask if she needed help during breastfeeding. “I just felt like it was a real calming experience,” she said. “It was personable. They asked if you were ready, helped you get back together. They really took care of you.” After one of her deliveries, Catharine had to change rooms at the hospital. The staff handled packing and moving all of her belongings. “It was a smooth transition from the delivery room to a private room,” she said. Even when Catharine experienced issues with her epidural before Flynn’s birth, the Shelby Baptist staff did everything in their power to fix it. “They were so calming throughout the whole time,” she said. “They were determined to get it

working and make sure I was comfortable. It just meant a lot to me that they took the time to try different things to make sure I was comfortable.” Catharine said Gooding added to the calming nature of her deliveries, was encouraging to her and kept her informed of what was happening throughout the process. “I liked being informed of what was going on,” Catharine said. “There was so much anxiety in the first experience. Neither of these (deliveries) at Shelby were. The team of nurses and Dr. Gooding made it seem like it was a real peaceful experience.” Gooding has been with Shelby Obstetrics and Gynecology for 12 years and delivers all of her patients at Shelby Baptist. “I think it’s a privilege to be able to focus my attention on one dedicated women’s facility where I know my patients will receive great care,” Gooding said. Although she doesn’t keep count, Gooding said

she is told she has delivered about 2,000 babies at Shelby Baptist. “I love taking care of pregnant women. It’s a very meaningful way to spend my career,” she said. “I approach each patient with enthusiasm for the life they’ve created. I feel a responsibility to help each woman become the healthiest she can during pregnancy, and I want to enable each baby to get the best start in the world, with the best opportunity to have a healthy life.” Shelby Baptist is pursuing a “Baby Friendly Hospital” certification, which, once achieved, will recognize the facility as one that offers the optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother and baby bonding, Brookwood Baptist Health Marketing Director Laura Brooks Bright wrote in an email. According to Babyfriendlyusa.org, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, or BFHI, is a global program launched by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer that optimal level of mother July 2017 | 33

and baby care, and it recognizes and awards birthing facilities that successfully implement “The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” and “International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.” “It encourages and supports breastfeeding, which has been shown to improve the health of both moms and newborns,” Gooding said. “We have a great team of nurses and doctors who work together to help patients have a happy and healthy delivery experience.” In addition, Shelby Baptist has remodeled its labor and delivery unit. Patients will find spacious and comfortable rooms. “We encourage babies and new moms to stay together throughout the hospital stay,” Gooding said. “We offer a special breakfast for the family on the morning after delivery.” Catharine and David, who owns an Allstate insurance agency in Alabaster, were impressed with the care they received from Gooding and the nurses at Shelby Baptist during their second and third babies’ births. “You’re already nervous and naturally a little anxious, but they took that anxiety away,” Catharine said. “I feel like they have a true gift. It really was a wonderful experience.” Gooding said the personal care patients like Catharine receive at Shelby Baptist is what keeps them coming back as they have more children. “When making a plan for delivery of a second or third child, my patients will often ask me if they can request the same nurse that assisted with the delivery of their first child,” Gooding said. “I see there is quite a bond that formed during the previous delivery.” For Gooding, watching families grow and helping them before, during and after the delivery process is at the heart of her work. “When moms come back for annuals, and that baby that we delivered last year is toddling around the exam room, then the next baby is on the way, that’s what I love,” Gooding said. “Taking care of women throughout their lives is a joy to me.” l

Celebrate summer Seasonal safety tips from St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Story by DR. LYNETTE ZILLS Photograph CONTRIBUTED

J

uly is for celebrating. From patriotic picnics to waterfront weekends, area residents will make the most of the next few weeks. And although we welcome everyone year-round to St. Vincent’s Urgent Care on the One Nineteen campus, no one wants a celebration to be marred by illness or accident. That’s why I’m offering these seven tips for safe-and-healthy celebrations: 1. Be water wise. Drowning is a real risk for anyone, but especially children. Swim aids are no substitute for life jackets. Assign a responsible adult to watch children in or near water. And you might help children enjoy more water fun by using over-the-counter drops to prevent swimmer’s ear infections. Shaking water out of the ear canal and keeping wet hair away from the ears can also help. 2. Use sun smarts. Our youngest and oldest loved ones are at the highest risk for

heat-related illness. But heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration can happen at any age. Find a cool place for anyone who becomes fatigued or nauseated. Sip water all day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. 3. Fear family fireworks. It’s not smart to hold something designed to explode. Each year firecrackers destroy lives. Even sparklers destroy vision. Leave fireworks to the professionals. 4. Time your tuna. Perishable picnic foods should be packed in ice. Meats should be cooked thoroughly. And when that tuna salad or fried chicken is served, it shouldn’t remain uncooled. Set a onehour phone alarm as a reminder to pack up the picnic and prevent foodborne illness. 5. Restrict young riders. Children shouldn’t ride on mowers or tractors, especially upon the operator’s lap. Meanwhile, make sure bike riders of all ages wear helmets and other protective gear. Reflective clothing is also important, espe-

cially at dusk. 6. Save your skin. Apply sunscreen early and often. While sunburns can be immediately dangerous, tanning raises subsequent skin cancer risks. Protect your skin from disease-carrying insects, too, by applying repellant on clothing. Prevent poison ivy/oak/sumac reactions by identifying and avoiding those plants and anything they touch, including firewood. Peel contaminated gardening gloves and clothing off carefully, and wash them separately. 7. Know 911. We can address many minor injuries and acute illnesses at St. Vincent’s Urgent Care at One Nineteen. However, no Urgent Care center is a substitute for an Emergency Room. Always call 911 for chest pain, difficulty breathing or any life-threatening concern. l Dr. Lynette Zills is a family medicine physician and the medical director at St. Vincent’s Urgent Care. A calling to help For 12 Fitness Studios owner B.J. Nichols, training is more than just a job CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: According to owner B.J. “F

inish What You Start” is the motto B.J. Nichols uses to motivate everyone that walks into his gym, 12 Fitness Studios, in

Mt Laurel. Emblazoned on the wall in bright red letters above the free weights, the motto is also something Nichols, 36, of Chelsea has worked hard to fulfill in his longtime career as a trainer. Opening 12 Fitness Studios in April, Nichols said, was the culmination of “15 years of prayer and determination to own my own place.”

“It’s been my dream to help people,” Nichols said. “First, my calling is to help people. Next, it’s to make a living.” Nichols has teamed up with Doug Beard, 40, to offer a multi-faceted approach to fitness for people of all ages and abilities. On the main level of the two-story, 3,000-square-foot space in Mt Laurel’s town center, Nichols handles one-on-one and small group training with TechnoGym Kinesis equipment. The equipment allows for more than 1,500 different exercises and, in Nichols’ words, is “easy on the joints and hard on the muscles.” “I researched it for years before I decided to

buy it,” Nichols said of the equipment. Upstairs, Beard offers flexibility training and muscle therapy. “I do deep tissue work, flexibility training and stretching,” Beard said. Nichols and Beard met at another Birmingham fitness facility, and realized their varied skills would mesh well in a business. “God opened that door,” Nichols said. “I’ll get you sore, and Doug will work it out.” Nichols started training when he was 18 years old and became certified the next year. Likewise, Beard’s training experience spans decades, too. Beard worked with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers July 2017 | 37

professional football team as a muscle therapist for 14 seasons. “I did their stretching and massage work for them during the season,” he said. He also worked as a muscle therapist for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, a professional soccer team based in Florida, for one season, and worked four Cirque du Soleil shows. After his parents retired and moved back to Birmingham years ago, Beard said he started thinking about moving to the area – where “there’s a bigger emphasis on sports medicine” – and trying to establish himself as a muscle therapist and flexibility trainer in a new place. “I was in professional sports for a long time, but what I tell people is you don’t have to be a professional athlete to be treated like one,” Beard said. “The things I did for my NFL players and

my soccer players, you’re going to get the exact same treatment and level of care that they got.” Beard said he and B.J. hit if off from the beginning, and discovered their mindsets regarding the atmosphere they wanted to create at a gym were alike. “Both of us have the same ideas of the way we want to run a business and how we treat people,” Beard said. “I said to B.J., ‘If you happen to have some space over there, I would love to be able to join you over there and be able to help your clients out.’ It’s so nice when you’re working with somebody that really believes in what you’re doing. It makes it fun to come to work and to be here.” Nichols’ Christian faith is evident in how he runs 12 Fitness Studios. In keeping with his business mission, “to

He doesn’t tolerate derogatory language, and Bible verses are displayed on the walls of the studio. “It gives me the opportunity to share the gospel,” Nichols said of the business. “I’m not afraid to talk about it.” Nichols wears a wristband with “Nehemiah 8:10” inscribed on it. “It’s a Christian-based studio,” Beard said. “Neither one of us are ashamed to be Christian men.” Beard said his focus is on keeping clients’ best interests at the forefront of their treatment.

“It’s about their comfort level and what they’re looking for,” Beard said. “I want people to feel comfortable. I want them to walk out and say, ‘Wow, I feel better, and I’m able to move better.” Beard emphasized the efficacy of treatments is not confined to one session, and the length of time needed to achieve a desired result varies with each client. “It’s a process,” Beard said. “You’re not going to come in for one treatment and magically be fixed. It’s like training for a marathon; you’re not going to go out and run 26 miles the first time.” Downstairs, the primary areas of training Nichols focuses on with clients are: Condition (high-intensity interval training); sculpt (isolated body-building); strength (heavy weights); and

Nichols said his goal is to help clients achieve “the next level” while modifying exercises where needed to ensure they are not injuring themselves during workouts. The name 12 Fitness Studios was inspired by Nichols’ “Twelve Hour Makeover” approach. The number 12 signifies the biblical number of completion, Nichols said. In addition to workouts, Nichols helps clients with individualized nutrition and supplement plans. Nichols holds a master personal training certification, is CPR certified through the American Red Cross, has an advanced certification and TeleFitness Certification through AFAA and is a published Christian author. He is also qualified in several different styles of training, including functional strength training, athletic training, HIT, body building, healthy physique, flexibility improvement, overall health and physical therapy. Along with everything Nichols and Beard offer, Nichols’ wife, Candace, leads special programs for moms and momsto-be. Through core strengthening exercises, Candace aims to help women maintain a strong core during pregnancy and rebound from abdominal separation after pregnancy. “A lot of it can actually be repaired if you take the time to build that core integrity back,” Candace said. As the mother of five, two of which were twins that arrived via a C-section, Candace can relate to women who are coping with pre- and post-pregnancy issues, and she wants to help. “I just think a healthy mom is a happy mom, and I think a happy mom is a happy family,” she said. “It’s more about recognizing what your body just did and getting your body back to healthy. It’s about being healthy, not being thin.” For more information about 12 Fitness Studios, call B.J. at (205) 678-1237, email bj@12fitstudios.com or visit 12FitStudios on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Story by EMILY SPARACINO Photographs by DAWN HARRISON At a dim point in her life, Birmingham resident Kathryn Jenkins had a bright idea. Jenkins, who was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called scleroderma near her 50th birthday, started having trouble with tasks like grocery shopping. She enlisted the help of her son, Maurice Mercer, to pick up and deliver her groceries to her home. “By her death, she was on full-time oxygen,” Mercer said. “She would like to go shopping, but she could barely carry a gallon of milk. She would

get out of breath. It was more a chore than something that someone would find pleasant.” He said Jenkins was not eligible for a meal delivery service because of her age. Mercer, who lives in Shelby County and serves on the Pelham City Council, started commuting to Birmingham each week to deliver her groceries. “What a task, but when it’s your mom, you get it done,” he said. “We both agreed that, hey, this would be a great service. She would text me her list. We talked about this being a great idea.” A grocery delivery service: The concept, although simple, could fill a void for people like

Jenkins. It could make a difference in the lives of seniors, veterans and people unable to leave their homes because of illness or other reasons. It could also alleviate the strain placed on people, like Mercer, who are tasked with providing for a loved one while juggling their own schedules. “My main concern was that she had everything she needed,” Mercer said. Mayoclinic.org defines scleroderma as a group of rare diseases that involve the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues, which are the fibers that provide the framework and support for the body. Before the effects of the disease forced her to retire, Jenkins was a nurse at UAB Hospital. She earned her master’s degree in nursing from Columbia University in New York. Mercer said no known cure for scleroderma exists. Jenkins passed away in November 2013, earlier than Mercer and his family expected. At that point, Mercer felt compelled to act on his and Jenkins’ idea of a grocery delivery service. “I really felt like the Lord was putting it on my heart to get it started for seniors,” Mercer said. Thus, Karing, Agape and Transitional Services Inc. – also known as KATs Grocery Delivery – was formed in memory of Jenkins, whose nickname among family and friends was July 2017 | 43

“Kat.” “She helped create the idea,” Mercer said. “The unfortunate part is we never really put the paperwork or moved forward while she was living.” Mercer, the company’s current president, and his wife Amanda are founding members of KATs, which incorporated in August 2014. Trial deliveries scheduled by phone came first, and by January 2015, Mercer said business was steady. KATs currently serves Shelby and Jefferson counties, and Mercer is open to more growth. “Competition has brought more awareness

“I really felt like the Lord was putting it on my heart to get it started for seniors” — Maurice Mercer that grocery delivery is a good concept,” he said. “We welcome that competition.” The KATs staff consists of as many as five part-time workers. The number fluctuates according to need. “We’ve been lucky enough to have recently

brought on some additional hires,” Mercer said. “The growth we’re seeing, I could see that number easily gravitate. Nobody is full-time at this point, but we are always looking for somebody to add.” All employees undergo a background check and have insurance. In addition to home deliveries, KATs handles commercial deliveries for local chefs, caterers and businesses including Consider It Joy Baking, Nourish Foods, Bham Eats, Emily’s Heirloom Poundcakes and Heat N Eat in Vestavia Hills. Between Sunday and Thursday, KATs delivers more than 300 meals that Birmingham-area chefs have prepared and sold through their websites, Mercer said. “They use KATs to get these meals out to

consumers,” he added. “That has been a blessing for us as a small business to be able to move in a different direction. In my mind, it’s still helping people like my mom. They have a full meal cooked; they just have to warm it up.” KATs is headquartered in Alabaster and operates one delivery van. “We’re looking to expand that to a second van sometime this summer,” Mercer said. KATs Grocery Delivery is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and was a 2017 nominee for the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year awards. Health Focus of the Month: “Summer is here! Summer is fast approaching and of course you will need a cool pair of sunglasses to welcome the warm weather and sunshine. Just remember that it is more than just style; sunglasses are also going to be your safety glasses. We have found that the sun's UVA, UVB and blue ray light waves damage the pigment cells in your retina and the lens in your eye. As you get older, this can result in macular degeneration, cataracts, skin cancers, and wrinkles. Selecting the right pair of sunglasses is like choosing a good sunscreen- they are not all the same. Make sure that you are getting the protection

you need. A dark lens does not ensure protection. Lenses should be marked with 99100% UVA and UVB block or block wavelengths under 400.

Then, to obtain a lens with blue ray protection, select a polarized lens. Some lenses also come with mirrored coatings that can provide additional

protection. This is a lifetime commitment to take care of your eyes. Unfortunately, many of us start too late to benefit from sun protection. Only 32% of children use sunglasses and they tend to have more exposure than adults. So when selecting your dazzling sunglasses, pick up a pair for the kids. For you contact lens wearers, most contacts do not block UV rays so put them on. Article Submitted by: Dr. Douglas Clark Pelham Eye Care

Tourism & Recreation Work Group Formed As part of the 2017 Business Plan, the Chamber has formed a Tourism & Recreation Work Group. The purpose of the group will be to:  serve as the liaison between all sectors of Shelby County’s tourism and recreation industry,  provide assistance in promotion and development of tourism-related events and recreational activities throughout Shelby County, and  encourage the use of Shelby County hotels, campgrounds, parks, bed

& breakfasts and other participating lodging facilities during our visitors’ stay in our communities. An initial group of investors in the tourism & recreation sector held a formation meeting to gauge interest and discuss a potential schedule.

That group determined that meeting on the first Friday of each month from 8:30AM 9:30AM would potentially give a majority of businesses in the tourism & recreation sector a convenient time to meet. The group also decided that meeting at various locations

throughout Shelby County would help familiarize work group members with all that our communities have to offer in tourism and recreation. While the group’s focus is on tourism and recreation, participation in the group — like all of the Chamber’s Work Groups — is open to any employee of any Chamber investor firm. For additional information on serving on the Tourism & Recreation Work Group, please contact Kirk Mancer at 663-4542 ext 101 or via e-mail at kirk@shelbychamber.org.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Tuesday, July 25 and join us at Whataburger - 280 location, 111 Resource Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35242 from 8:30AM until 9:30AM for CoffeeNet. The morning meeting, hosted by

no cost to attend however reservations are requested by noon on Monday, July 24 to assist in preparation. Please contact the Chamber by phone at 663-4542 or register online at www. shelbychamber.org.
