FROM THE EDITOR Who’s the best in Shelby County? We have the answers for you in this month’s issue of Shelby Living. Thousands of readers voted for their favorite local foods, businesses and events when our contest launched this fall. This year’s winners include lots of old favorites – Jim N’ Nick’s, which won Best Barbecue for the fifth year in a row – and lots of new names, including Inverness Dermatology for Best Dermatologist. This contest, which is our fifth, is a great way to support local businesses, and we appreciate your support. Now, do you see a name on this list that’s unfamiliar? Make sure to stop by and see why our readers voted it as one of Shelby County’s best. Also, if you have any suggestions for new categories, feel free to email those to me. This issue of Shelby Living is full of other interesting stories. Here are a few of my favorites: • Our cover story this month is Black Sheep Antiques. This rustic, whimsical store offers plenty of unique home décor, antiques and curiosities.

Owner Barbara Adkins is constantly on the lookout for new items, so the store merchandise changes often. • Even though our office is located in Columbiana, it took me years to discover the treasure that is the Davis Drug snack bar. The old-fashioned snack bar serves up great burgers, chili and chicken salad. I am particularly partial to their BLTs and milkshakes. If you ever visit our county seat, make sure to stop by. • One of our most popular sections is Shelby Spotted. People love seeing photos of their friends out and about in Shelby County. If your organization or business is hosting an event, please send your photos (along with names of each person) to me. As always, please contact me if you have any questions, comments or story ideas. Have a wonderful fall!

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Fewer gifts, more experiences

W

hen holiday music hits the radio waves, it’s hard not to think about your gift list and the fact that is gets harder and harder to fill every year. You try to justify more toys, a picture frame, or another Keurig in a new color even though the “old color” still works just fine. Lisa Phillips, You struggle with what to get owner of SimpleWorks, your parents and kids who have Simpleworks.guru everything—and you really mean lisa@simpleworks.guru 205.981.7733 “everything.” Maybe the answer doesn’t come in a box with instructions. Maybe the answer is to think “outside the box” by coming up with “experiences” that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Memberships. Amusement parks, zoos, aquariums in Chattanooga or Atlanta, Botanical Gardens, gyms, an indoor playground for the kids, or parks. These gifts “keep on giving” throughout the year. Tickets. Concert tickets make a great gift. Celebrate when you give the tickets and then again when the concert is here. Movie tickets are also a fun way for those who crave a date night or a night with friends. Season tickets to the Barons or Braves anyone? Food. Treat the “hard to buy for” to a fun night where you do the cooking and cleanup. Or if you love to cook or bake, consider doing a “featured food” where you treat them to something special once a month or once a quarter. Cookies one month, fresh cobbler the next, a bottle of wine and grilled steaks in the summer. Go healthy, go sweet! You’ll know what they like and can be creative with what you prepare. Travel. While a cruise or Disneyworld might come to mind, consider renting a cabin in the mountains for the weekend. Take the family on a kayaking trip, enter a golf tournament, go whitewater rafting. Take the train to New Orleans. Time. Arrange a night where you go painting or take a pottery class together. Buy a board game and invite everyone over. Look for opportunities to bring people or families together. It’s important to remember that a “gift” doesn’t have to be tied to “stuff.” Start your gift list with what would bring this person joy. If you can truly say a new coffee maker, then get it. If you’re just buying things to wrap and have under the tree, then stop and rethink how you are spending your money. It’s that simple. l

Seven ISS students named Merit Semifinalists Seven Indian Springs School seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. McKenna Barney ’16, Ashlynn Berry ’16, Claire Chen ’16, Daun Lee ’16, Michael O’Malley ’16, Rob Pulliam ’16, and Cheska Romero ’16 were selected based on their achievements on the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of about 16,000 Semifinalists represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. These students have a chance to compete for approximately 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million to be offered next spring. “We are excited that these seven members of the Indian Springs School Class of 2016 have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists,” says ISS Director Gareth Vaughan. “The distinction is a tribute to their hard work, dedication, and exceptional ability, and we look forward to their continued success in the competition.” Pictured: Indian Springs School 2016 National Merit Semifinalists (left to right) Rob Pulliam ’16, Claire Chen ’16, McKenna Barney ’16, Cheska Romero ’16, Michael O’Malley ’16, Daun Lee ’16, Ashlynn Berry ’16.

IES scarecrows brighten Valleydale Road Rainbow Fish, Paddington Bear and Chester Raccoon are just a few of the characters that have greeted drivers on Valleydale Road in front of Inverness Elementary School this fall. Those three characters, along with 26 more, were part of the IES PTO’s annual scarecrow fundraiser. A 12-year tradition at the school, the scarecrow project incorporates the entire IES community and surrounding North Shelby community. The theme of this year’s project is book characters. Each of the school’s

28 classrooms and the LEAPS program designed a scarecrow based off of a character in a book. Money raised by the scarecrow fundraiser supports the PTO’s many initiatives at the school, from redoing the playground to helping teachers purchase classroom supplies and teaching necessities. The IES scarecrows are also featured as part of the decor for the Birmingham Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo, and remain at the zoo for all of October and half of November.

United Way announces $38.7 million campaign goal “The need is now and the need is great,” said Mayer Electric Supply CEO Nancy Goedecke, the 2015 United Way Campaign Chair, as she announced the organization’s fundraising goal of $38,755,000. “I’ve been told that one reason that people don’t give to the campaign is because they have never been asked. “I’m taking that away right now. I’m asking each of you and everyone you come in contact with to give, give something,” she said to an audience of over 450 at a

campaign kickoff event. Social service needs provided by United Way’s 80 allocation agencies and initiatives are especially in danger this year because of threatened cuts to health care, public safety and other vital services because of potential budget cuts. Twenty of its allocation partners are located in Shelby County or serve county residents. This year’s campaign theme is “whyigive.” Visit Uwca.org. ARTS & CULTURE

Nature to art

Gourds serve as canvas for Montevallo artist’s creations Story and photos by LAURA BROOKHART

“I

f I tell people that I am a gourd artist, they envision painted Santa Claus ornaments or pom-pom gourds,” Becky CoxRodgers says. She smiles as she confesses to avoiding the raised eyebrows that may otherwise ensue, so she simply calls herself an artist. Cox-Rodgers is a skilled illustrator who draws well, patiently losing herself in applied detail added with a wood burning tool or chip-carving tool. Some of her larger gourd sculptures may involve up to 40 hours of hands-on work by completion. Born in Maine and raised in Florida, Cox-Rodgers arrived in Montevallo as a student at the University of Montevallo active in sports while earning a bachelor’s degree in commercial art and photography. With her preference for personal curiosities and motifs such as gargoyles and images of Moundville intertwining snakes, Cox-Rodgers has established herself as a fine artist who just happens to use gourds for her canvas. “It is about complementing the organic form, first and foremost, then coloring in the surface design with paint and sometimes highlighting with Liquid Leaf gold,” she said. Cox-Rodgers also manages Falcon Art Supply in Montevallo and says she has experimented with the application on the minimally grained gourd surface of most every ink and paint product the store sells. She is vice-president of ALGS (Alabama Central Gourd Society) and also started the local Gourd Patch Society, which has about 18 members, including Teresa Wamble, another well-known (gourd) artist. “The shading that Becky incorporates into her linear design sets her work apart,” 12 | ShelbyLiving.com

said Wamble, “as well as the finishing accents she adds with pine needle weaving and twining.” Mid-September found Cox-Rodgers headed to the sixth annual Mississippi Gourd Society Show to exhibit the new work photographed for this article and to also make available the recommended products for gourd art sold at Falcon Art Supply. Cox-Rodgers first embraced the gourd as art in 2009, though she had grown them in the past simply because she appreciated their organic and natural shapes. “They offer a dimensional surface that is easier, cheaper and less restrictive than working with clay,” she notes. In 2013, she took a class on twining from well-known Alabama artist Ethel Owen in Cherokee, North Carolina. Cox-Rodgers is also a thirdgeneration pine-needle weaver in her own right, via her mother and grandmother. Interestingly, as well, she learned wood burning as a child from her father and grandfather. Cox-Rodgers’ spider-motif gourd features Nautilus Netting, a technique that is seen in dream catchers. “I like to use local bird images, too, such the Peregrine Falcon, the Barn Owl, and Cooper’s Hawk,” she said. She has multiple gourd creations that feature the Pileated Woodpecker, a signature favorite. In her twenties, Cox-Rodgers traveled to the walled city of Carcassonne, France and came home with her first gargoyle statue in

her backpack. Another motif of choice references the Mayan Warrior. A recent imposing creation, and one likely to be an award-winner at upcoming shows, is topped with feathers that represent the headdress the deities were depicted wearing. This piece has the added color of Mayan Blue, unique to that culture. The deities ride on boats that surf over the fish at the gourd’s bottom. Cox-Rodgers will be participating in the annual mid-October Cullman Gourd Art show. Consider yourself invited to meet Fossy, the store dog, and to admire handcarved Felix Falcon on the storefront signage at Falcon Art Supply in Montevallo. l

ARTS COUNCIL CORNER

The queen of blues Musician Debbie Bond to perform at the Shelby County Arts Council in November

Story by LINDSAY DYESS Photo CONTRIBTUED

ABOVE: Blues musician Debbie Bond will perform in Columbiana in November.

14 | ShelbyLiving.com

W

hile some people merely play the blues, musician Debbie Bond has managed to turn it into an art form. For Bond, the blues come as naturally as breathing. She has spent more than 30 years sharing her passion for music and now she makes her way to the Shelby County Arts Council in

early November. “I fell in love with the blues early on. I started playing guitar when I was 13,” Bond said. Since then she has gone on to become a successful singer, songwriter and advocate for the Alabama Blues legacy. Being influenced and inspired by blues legends such as Johnny Shines, Willie King and Eddie Kirkland eventually led her to found the Alabama Blues Project, a non-profit that educates and instructs students about the blues. Kids attending the yearround program learn multiple skill levels of blues singing, guitar, harmonica, and drums. In addition to the children’s programs, she also developed many blues residency projects and a traveling exhibition of blues women. Although she is no longer on the administration of the Alabama Blues Project, the program continues to thrive and educate a new generation of young blues enthusiasts. These days, Bond focuses more on her own musical career and spreading the joy of the blues by performing shows and touring in the US and Europe. “Although I am influenced by my traditional blues mentors, I write my own songs and tell my own story,” Bond said. Lately, she has spent time telling those stories on the road with keyboard/harmonica playing partner and husband Rick Asherson. She performs across the South, and this summer she traveled to Europe to share her Alabama blues love. Come out for a night of great blues music with the queen of blues herself! Joining Bond on stage will be the Advanced ABP blues band. Taught by Bond and Asherson, the student members are some of the most skilled of the Alabama Blues Project. Bond will perform Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets area available for purchase for $20 at Shelbycountyartscouncil.com or by calling 205-669-0044. l

Black Sheep Antiques is loved for its selection of curiosities and vintage items Written by GRACE THORNTON Photographs by DAWN HARRISON

here’s a little building just off U.S. 280 in Harpersville that was built out of rocks during the Great Depression. It’s Barbara Adkins’ happy place. And she’s hoping it’s a happy place for a lot of other people, too. “I grew up visiting in Harpersville and have lived there for 25 years now,” Adkins said. “The building has always appealed to me because of its history.” So in 2014, she bought it and renovated it, 34 | ShelbyLiving.com

thinking it would be a great place to store the antiques she sold as part of her on-the-road business. But it wasn’t long before Black Sheep Antiques “evolved” into a store — and a destination — all its own. The place is hopping on the weekends — the only time it’s open during the week — with mostly out-of-town customers. “It occurred to me that I might get some traffic off of 280,” she said, but she hadn’t done any market research. “I should have,” she said, but the shop was meant to just be a storage facility at first, after all.

“I just kind of jumped in, and it’s working,” Adkins said with a laugh. “I got lucky.” So these days on the weekends, she can be found in the little gray stone shop, chatting with people on their way to Alexander City or Auburn or one of the lakes in the area. She’s made a lot of friends. But every time they visit, it’s a whole different store. “When I bring new things in, I redo the whole store,” she said. “I don’t want someone to come in two weekends in a row and it be the same. It’s never the same — it’s constant turnover.” It’s a labor of love for her and her husband, Sonny. And redoing the store each week not only makes it look fresh and new but also gives Adkins a much-needed creative outlet, she said. “It’s fun for me — I’m a creative person.” She puts the same kind of effort into choosing the right pieces to go inside, too. “I hand-pick every piece that comes into the shop,” she said. “If it doesn’t appeal to me as being well designed, well made and November 2015 | 39

loved in the past, I don’t buy it. It doesn’t matter to me if the piece is a little broken or worse for the wear — to me that gives it heart, character and meaning.” Adkins spends her weekdays traveling around picking just the right pieces for the shop. “I don’t carry reproduction items or just order them from the market,” she said. “It takes time and a little bit of travel around the Southeast to find the right things to sell.” And she hopes that attention to detail — and the fact that the store is only open certain days — just adds to the charm. “The weekend-only limited hours make it special — or at least I like to think so,” she said with a laugh. The store is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. But “if a carload of women out on a romp show up during the week, my number is on the door and they can call me and I’ll come let them in,” Adkins said. The shop also hosts local and regional artists for art shows and other events, such as a book signing with Barbara Westbrook of Atlanta, author of “Gracious Rooms,” on Nov. 14 from 2-5 p.m. For more information about the shop, visit blacksheepantiquesal.com. l LEFT: The store is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Thankful to serve

St. Vincent’s One Nineteen grateful for new outpatient options Written by JOHN L. ROBERSON

W

hen you live in central Alabama, it’s easy to be thankful each November. Birmingham’s fall must be one of the most beautiful in the region. However, area physicians have new reasons to be grateful this month, as St. Vincent’s One Nineteen offers new options enabling many of us to better serve our patients.

Although Birmingham Podiatry has served area patients since 1932, our practice has only recently expanded to its fourth office – this one at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. And I’m especially glad to be seeing area patients there. Our new office provides us an easily-accessed site for area residents seeking help for athletic injuries, diabetes-related concerns, congenital or infectious foot problems and other podiatry issues. Although we are able to treat most of our patients with nonsurgical measures, I will also be joining the long list of specialists offering surgical services within St. Vincent’s One Nineteen’s new Outpatient Surgery Center, opening later this year. From a physician’s standpoint, an outpatient center is an ideal site to perform surgeries that don’t require an overnight stay in a hospital setting. Since ambulatory surgical patients are not exposed to the infectious diseases treated within inpatient facilities, we can reduce their infection chances while still accessing the latest instrumentation. 44 | ShelbyLiving.com

From a physician’s standpoint, an outpatient center is an ideal site to perform surgeries that don’t require an overnight stay in a hospital setting. We also find that some patients are more likely to seek the help they need when it’s offered close to home. Some of my patients have such busy schedules that they have postponed scheduling reconstructive foot surgery for bunions or hammertoes, plantar fasciitis or soft tissue masses. Now that St. Vincent’s One Nineteen is offering its outpatient surgical option, those patients are ready to address their chronic foot pain. For the first time in years, many of them will be able to exercise and pursue a truly active lifestyle. We expect to see other patients from this area referred to us from St. Vincent’s One Nineteen new Urgent Care facility. Those diagnosed there with a foot fracture, perhaps from a weekend injury, can have their surgery

done on an outpatient basis in the same facility without duplicating scans. My patients appreciate One Nineteen’s efficient, yet relaxed atmosphere. Easy onsite access to parking, physician offices, diagnostics, surgery and physical therapy is a key consideration for anyone experiencing difficulty walking. We are thankful to serve area residents at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. To learn more about St. Vincent’s One Nineteen’s “Healthcare Like No Other” services, including its Outpatient Surgery Center opening later this year, visit onenineteen.com. John L. ‘A fun place to come’ Davis Drug snack bar nearing 60th year of service Written by EMILY SPARACINO Photographs by DAWN HARRISON

W

hen James T. “Jimmy” Davis Sr. opened Davis Drug Company in 1956, he made sure a snack bar was part of his business. “He always knew that this could bring in more customers, so he always had this,” Treadwell Davis III, his grandson, said of the snack bar, a well-known spot in downtown Columbiana. Locals visited the Davis Drug Snack Bar for coffee, sandwiches and Coca-Cola fountain drinks, and over the years, hamburgers and milkshakes became popular menu items. “They used to do a lot of hot dogs back in the day,” Treadwell, 28, said. “Now, they do a lot of hamburgers.” 46 | ShelbyLiving.com

Made with fresh ground chuck, the hamburgers are cooked to order and can be dressed with cheese and a range of other toppings and condiments. “My favorite thing to order is the cheeseburger,” Columbiana Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Lamb said. “I ask the ladies to make them messy. If the ketchup, mayo and mustard isn’t running down your arms when you’re finished, it’s not a good one.” Lamb and his wife, Deanne, have frequented the snack bar for more than 30 years, usually coming in three to five times a week. One of the couple’s favorite meals, which Jerry described as “very delicious and very filling,” is the lunch special: Hamburger steak with gravy, onions and mushrooms, served with baked potato salad, a garden salad and a drink.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Robbie Braddock, Treadwell Davis, Sarah Portera and Robin Connell take a break at the Davis Drug snack bar counter. The snack bar at Davis Drug in Columbiana has been a part of the business since 1956. Cooked-to-order hamburgers and cheesburgers are popular menu items at the snack bar.

Deanne, a lifelong Columbiana resident, remembers visiting the snack bar when she was growing up. “It was like a soda fountain,” she said. “It was a fun place to come.” The snack bar started in the front of the store, moved to the back and is currently in the front again, closest to the Main Street entrance. “We remodeled and expanded the snack bar around 2000,” Treadwell said, noting the seating – a mixture of bar stools at the counter and diner-style tables – can now accommodate about 38 people, instead of 10 to 12. Snack bar manager and main cook Robbie Braddock started working at Davis Drug as the remodeling was nearing completion. Braddock, dubbed “the queen of the snack bar,” not only flips more hamburgers and spins more milkshakes than she can count, but she knows repeat customers by name and when they normally come in, and calls them on the telephone if November 2015 | 47

they don’t show up to make sure they are alright. “Robbie, she’s something special,” 91-year-old Columbiana resident Jack Bentley said of Braddock as he ate his breakfast at the counter one morning. Bentley said breakfast at the snack bar is part of his daily routine. “Everybody passes through here,” Bentley said. “They’ve got good food.” Also among the snack bar’s “regulars” are Shelby County Circuit Judge Sonny Conwill; retired Judge Oliver Head and his son, attorney Frank Head; and George Bentley, owner of Rux Carter Insurance in Columbiana. Conwill said the group has breakfast together most mornings. “We have each other,” Oliver Head said. “There’s always 48 | ShelbyLiving.com

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Davis Drugs also has a gift shop. Gift items for the holidays are available. The gift shop includes a bridal registry service now.

something to talk about.” “The people that own it are just like family,” Bentley said. And that is precisely what Davis Drug Company is: A family-owned business nearing its 60-year anniversary. Jim Davis Jr., son of Jimmy Davis Sr., oversees the business now with his son Treadwell. Jim, 61, was 2 years old when his father opened Davis Drug and helped at the snack bar as a child. “I was a ‘soda jerk,’” Jim said. “I did sundaes, ice cream cones, malts and banana splits.” Jim said his father’s goal for the snack bar was “to make the best cheeseburger and milkshake.” Jim said the pharmacy-soda fountain combination was a popular business model then, and for Davis Drug, still is today. November 2015 | 49

The business has expanded to include a gift shop. “It’s hard to find a place like this where you can get the type of homegrown atmosphere,” Jerry said. In addition to the famous burgers and shakes, the snack bar menu features a variety of sandwiches (turkey or ham, grilled cheese, pimento cheese), subs and wraps (Philly steak and cheese, fajita chicken) and salads and made-fromscratch desserts. “You could come here for three weeks and not eat the same thing twice,” Braddock said. But with items like the milkshakes, made with Bluebell ice cream, ordering the same thing twice is inevitable for some customers. Columbiana resident Shane Armstrong said he has ordered 30 to 40 milkshakes for the nurses at Shelby Baptist Medical Center. “The milkshakes are to die for,” he said. Armstrong grew up in Columbiana and remembers coming to Davis Drug as early as age 6. “Great people, great service and it’s a family atmosphere,” Armstrong said. “I can’t brag on them enough.” l LEFT: Tiffany Smith and Brenda Miller are employees at Davis Drug in Columbiana.

Recipes by STONE HOLLOW FARMSTEAD Story by KATIE MCDOWELL Photographs by DAWN HARRISON his month’s recipe from Stone Hollow Farmstead manages to be healthy, hearty and easy to make. It’s a triple threat that’s hard to beat. The salad is chock full of healthy ingredients with high nutritional

value. Quinoa is a versatile grain that is high in protein and fiber. Two years ago, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations declared 2013 to be the “International year of the Quinoa.” Butternut squash is a popular fruit that is also high in fiber, as well magnesium, potassium and vitamins A, C and E. Thanks to our $9 million investment, he’s breathing a little easier. Our recently completed $9 million upgrade to our North Shelby Water Resource Reclamation Facility has dramatically reduced the amount of phosphorus in the clean water we return to the Cahaba River. That means we haven’t just met or surpassed all state and federal health standards. We’ve also helped lower the likelihood of algal blooms, which rob wildlife of life-giving oxygen in the water.

And that’s just one of the ways we’re working to make ours a better, healthier community, along with supporting organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby County, and SafeHouse of Shelby County, among many others. Our pledge to you: we’ll keep working for a healthier river, and a healthier community. Which means we can all breathe a little easier.
