FROM THE EDITOR Sometime in late spring, I lost track of time. It is already October, but in my mind we’re just finishing up the month of May. Luckily, I love fall, so I am happy to welcome October and all it brings with it: changing leaves, cooler temperatures, tailgating. Time always seems to slow down for me in the spring and fall, which are my two favorite seasons. While working on this month’s issue of Shelby Living, I was reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the moment. It is a lesson Daniel Friday is learning. Friday, who is featured in this month’s magazine, is in the middle of a career transition. He was worn out from his previous job and looking for a way to rejuvenate. The Briarwood graduate soon found it. He started his own company, Southern Swinging Beds, and creates custom hanging beds by hand. His story, which you can read on page 28, reminded me of a lot of important life lessons I have learned over the years. Don’t be afraid to make a change if you need to. Don’t work yourself so hard you

forget to enjoy life. Creating something by hand is some of the most fulfilling work. This fall, my goal is to not let an entire season pass without noticing. I am going to relax and spend time with family and friends – preferably on a hanging bed on my back porch! Friday’s story is not the only inspiring thing you will read in this issue. Our writers also talked to local business owners at different places in their journey. Autumn Blais recently opened a new dance studio in the Inverness area. We also caught up with Terry and Dottie Smith, who opened the first Edgar’s Bakery and Cafe 18 years ago. Edgar’s has grown from a small startup to six locations – including two in Shelby County – and 130 employees. As always, if you have any questions, comments or story ideas, feel free to contact me at Katie.mcdowell@ shelbyliving.com.

Not bouncing back?

R

emember the rubber action figure Gumby? You could pull it in a million different directions and it would bounce back to its original shape. Have you ever thought of yourself as Gumby? Are people tugging at you from all directions, yet you’re not bouncing back? Do you feel you’re there for Lisa Phillips, everyone else instead of being the owner of SimpleWorks, best for yourself? Simpleworks.guru Start with determining what the lisa@simpleworks.guru 205.981.7733 priority is for you, your family, and your job. The top priorities should get your attention and time. Give the following some thought when you realize it’s time to get serious about being proactive versus reactive to what life is throwing at you. Schedule it. While most of us make appointments with other people, we rarely put ourselves on our own calendar. Never underestimate the power of an appointment with yourself. Block off time, write it in ink, and don’t cancel or postpone on yourself. “96.” Pareto’s Principle states that roughly 80 percent of the effects come from 20 percent of the causes. In other words, 80 percent of the work you need to do can be accomplished in 20 percent of the time. An eight-hour work day is 96 minutes. What could you accomplish if you had 96 minutes to focus on your “priority to-do list?” Let others know. Interruptions are a major killer in your focus to finish (or start). Let coworkers, staff and family know you are tied up and when you will be able to be reached. Be proactive in focusing on your priority list versus responding to someone else’s emergency. Bust Your Hump Day. Consider Wednesday as the day you “bust it out” and become the Energizer Bunny. Alter your normal routine by getting to work earlier or staying later than usual. Eat lunch on the run. By doing this, your perspective of time shifts. Being productive means having solid time management skills in place. In perspective, time management is really priority management, which is ultimately life management. It’s having control over what you do next. Your ability to choose between the important and unimportant is the key in determining your success in life and work. Go ahead and stretch yourself! With stronger priority skill sets, you’ll bounce back. It’s that simple. l

MLES students raise $22k in coin drive Mt Laurel Elementary School Principal Celita Deem and Assistant Principal Tina Neighbors welcomed students to school on Monday morning, Aug. 24 while taped to two flag poles in front of the school in order to fulfill a promise made to the students. Deem and Neighbors promised the students they would allow themselves to be taped to the flag poles if they met a $12,000 goal for the PTO sponsored coin drive. The students not only met the goal but exceeded it with a grand total of $22,446.85 for the entire week. The coin drive was held August 17-21 in order to raise money for various PTOsponsored school projects, including technology, student materials and supplies, and professional development. The coin drive replaced two previous fundraisers at the school. Each student was given a gallon-sized Ziploc bag at the end of the year and asked to collect coins over the summer. Deem said she was overwhelmed with the success of the event. She said it would not have been so successful without the hard work of the entire school community.

UM students paint OMES cafeteria Students at Oak Mountain Elementary School now have another visual reminder to help them learn the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People thanks to the creative talents of art students from the University of Montevallo. Oak Mountain Elementary has been adding new artwork to emphasize the habits since they became a Leader in Me School last year. The newest artwork was commissioned by Principal Debbie Horton after she and Kendall Williams with the Shelby County Schools Education Foundation attended a Leader in Me Symposium. Horton said she was impressed with how other Leader in Me schools had transformed their buildings to reflect the seven habits – “be

proactive,” begin with the end in mind,” “put things first,” “think win-win,” “seek first to understand,” “synergize” and “sharpen the saw.” Horton asked UM art professor Michael Willett, who is Williams’ brother, and five of his students to incorporate the seven habits into artwork related to healthy eating and lifestyles. After reviewing the cafeteria layout, the students spent a month designing and installing the large-scale piece that covers a 75-foot by 45-foot rectangular perimeter around the OMES cafeteria ceiling. Funding for the project was provided through a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant and the paint was donated by Rozar’s Paint Supply in Birmingham. October 2015 | 9

U

pon discovering the multi-faceted works of Diana Gehrig Hiott recently among the artist vendors at the Shelby County Shindig and BBQ Cookoff, I felt the need to know more about how and just where from within her handmade dolls and distinctive prints originate. An Illinois transplant, Hiott fell in love with the hills and green spaces of central Alabama some 20 years ago. Previously a social worker, she also worked on computer systems. “Living in the woods since 2010 has made a crucial impact on my art,” she said. “Many aspects of nature and animals appear in my iconography.” “As a fiber artist, I spin, weave and sew dolls and I also draw,” she added. “Many of my drawings become prints via collaboration with master printer and Jefferson State art instructor Patrick Mayton.” The print that caught my eye first with its bold black raven and feisty pattern of rotating dice is entitled Dicey. Also, Moon On a Sunfish is another of her hand-pulled serigraph numbered editions. The sunfish’s natural habitat is reflected within – a twist of concept that Hiott is often drawn to portray. Noting that in mythology Diana is goddess of the moon, Hiott is pictured here with Myrtle and Hilda, aka The Snarky Girls. They are small-town old gals who love to gossip. Their conversations run: “Just look at her in that dress.” “You don’t like it because she wore the same dress as you to the prom forty years ago and you’ve never forgiven her.” Or perhaps, “I know it’s true because John told

Sally and Sally told her mom. Her mom told my neighbor, so if five people know it, it must be true!” Hiott also mentions, from childhood and beyond, the influence of her grandfather, Robert Gehrig, who made children’s and family photography into a viable studio business during the Depression in Centralia, Illinois after returning from WWI. Because he spoke German, Gehrig guarded POWs in France and learned the art of photography. He operated his studio until the age of 83. Hiott participates in street festivals such as the Woodlawn Street Festival; exhibited at the Shelby County Arts Council Folk Festival; and has taught dollmaking and fiberarts at Wetumpka Art Council. She also donates work to animal rescue causes. Hiott is devoted to her three animal rescue dogs, Roger, a wirehaired Terrier; Major, an American foxhound and Boo, a chihuahuabeagle mix. She is also supportive of local artists and their impact on the local economy via locally owned businesses. She currently has work at Tradewinds in Clanton and The Blue Phrog in Columbiana. She also posts current work and projects under DianaGehrigHiott on Facebook. l October 2015 | 13

A leap of faith Autumn Blais opens Birmingham Academy of Dance in Inverness Story by GRACE THORNTON Photographs by DAWN HARRISON

T

hese days, Autumn Blais is teaching whole classes of children how to take leaps. It’s definitely not a new concept for her. She took a big leap of her own this summer. In August, Blais opened the Birmingham Academy of Dance, a new state-of-the-art dance studio on U.S. 280 in the Inverness Heights shopping center. It’s the realization of a lifelong

dream for her, but it was also a practical move, she said. “I had a daughter who was growing up in dance, and there was nothing on this side of 280 — we were driving to another part of town to get what we needed,” Blais said. That’s no small thing considering the fact that her 12-year-old daughter, Spencer Shirley, spends about 14 hours a week honing her skills as a competitive dancer. “We felt there was a need for a studio on this side of town,” Blais said. “When you have a child who’s in it, you start noticing these things, these needs, more and more.” And she feels she was right in sensing that need. At its grand opening, Birmingham Academy of Dance was already approaching 200 students, well above its goal of 140. “We built the building to accommodate 500 to

600 students so that we would have plenty of room to grow,” she said. “We wanted a large space and several studios so that multiple classes could be going on at the same time.” And in those studios, she said, they wanted the instruction to be extra personalized. “Our instructors are specifically trained in one genre,” Blais said. “Our ballet teacher has extensive ballet experience. Our jazz instructor has extensive jazz experience.” And Blais, also a seasoned instructor, teaches classes focusing on hip-hop and — yes — leaps

and turns. “We start classes at age 2 and go all the way through 18, and we offer all genres — ballet, tap, clogging, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, lyrical and musical theater,” she said. Blais herself started learning to dance at age 2, as did her daughter. But Blais said she works hard to make the — Shaina Trumer studio a comfortable environment for older beginners. “We have a lot of beginner students who are 12 and 13 and were afraid to take dance,” she said,

“It’s the most positive dance environment I’ve ever been in.”

noting that Birmingham Academy of Dance breaks classes up based on age but also on level so that all students can feel right at home. “We don’t want kids to feel insecure and intimidated — we want them to feel comfortable in class,” Blais said. As a result, the studio has been able to recruit beginner, intermediate and advanced students across every age group, she said. “We have a really good mix, and we’ve been able to adapt and personalize the classes to challenge each student.” Also from the early stages of design, Birmingham Academy of Dance endeavored to make the building itself conducive to challenging the students. “We made sure the atmosphere was as much like a stage performance as possible,” Blais said. “We used stage flooring in the studios, and we have ballet barre and mirrors to accommodate better performances from the students.” And the results? “We are thrilled,” she said. “It’s a dream come true.” Sixteen-year-old Shaina Trumer said it’s a dream come true October 2015 | 17

for her, too. She had been looking for a new studio this summer when she and her mom stumbled upon Birmingham Academy of Dance through an advertisement. “My mom says I’m not a nice person when I’m not in dance, so we were really looking hard for a place for me to start dancing again,” Trumer said with a laugh. After she and her mom saw the ad, they emailed Birmingham Academy of Dance, and Blais answered their email the same day, Trumer said. “They were so friendly. We went to an open house soon after that at the studio, and they remembered who I was,” she said. “I felt so welcomed. It was great. I knew it was the place for me.” She feels that way even more now that she’s taking classes. “The teachers really work with you. I think it’s great,” said Trumer, who takes classes in contemporary dance, clogging, ballet, hip hop and several other technical skills. “It’s the most positive dance environment I’ve ever been in.” For more information, visit badance280.com or call 205-518-0933. l LEFT: Birmingham Academy of Dance opened in the summer of 2015.

A woman’s caring

prescription St. Vincent’s One Nineteen encourages women to take time for themselves

Story by DR. RUPA GOOLSBY Photograph CONTRIBUTED

A

s a physician caring for women in all stages of life, I try to tell my patients what I’ve learned so far. Ladies, one of the most important things I’ve learned is to take time for yourself. You have to take that initiative. You need to say, “I need to get my annual checkup,” or “I need to exercise and learn to eat healthy,” or “I just need a spa treatment.” It seems to me that, as October presents our very-valuable pink ribbon breast health reminders, that even women who do not yet need mammograms could use those ribbons as self-care reminders. After all, when you care for yourself, you can better care for others. I know it’s a struggle, especially for my patients who are working moms or those caring for elderly family members.

However, women who care for their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are better equipped to fulfill their many public-private roles. I think self-care is especially easy at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Some of the patients I see at OB/GYN Associates of Alabama’s office at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen pay the nominal fee to drop their children off at the childcare center before they see us. Others are fitness members, and receive free childcare. Some patients choose to get their mammograms or other diagnostic services at One Nineteen, and they always say it’s because of its easy accessibility and tranquil atmosphere. Some patients follow my suggestion to work with a personal trainer in One Nineteen’s fitness area. Others participate in the fitness classes, or maybe take a daily swim. Some women receive nutrition consults or attend a healthy cooking class. When I walk through the building, I’m so happy

to see women treating themselves at the spa, attending one of the medical seminars or even dropping off a prayer request in the lobby. So, I have a message for women waiting for someone to tell them to care for themselves. Ladies, consider this your self-care prescription. First, get your annual check-up and follow your physician’s advice. Then, every time you see a pink ribbon, consider that symbol your medical reminder to care for yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, so you can continue to care for all those who depend on you. A community comes together to purchase a piano for Helena High School Story by GRACE THORNTON Photographs by ERIC STARLING

issy Johnson knew she should be irritated with her husband for scrolling Facebook during her niece’s ballet performance at the Alabama Theatre

in May. “I remember looking over and seeing him on Facebook,” Johnson said with a laugh, “Then leaning over and saying, ‘Dude, can you not just watch the recital?’” But as it turns out, she’s glad he was distracted. That stolen moment on social media ended with Helena High School getting a brand new baby grand piano. It all started with a post from Baker Piano and Music Company in Gadsden. Johnson’s husband leaned over and said he’d seen on Facebook that the music store was liquidating its assets and selling a Kawai baby grand piano for $2,500. A piano of its kind can come with a sticker price of up to $30,000. “Tell him yes, we’ll take it,” Johnson whispered back. That step of faith was just the beginning. The rest is a story of a community coming

They had three days to raise the money. It was Facebook to the rescue again. “I just on a whim put something on my Facebook page and said, ‘We’ve come across this gift. If you’re looking for a taxdeductible donation, this would be a great one,’” she said. Even though the brand-new school, which opened in the fall of 2014, had a brand-new building, that building didn’t come furnished, she explained. “I used a piano app on my iPad at the beginning of the school year last year to lead the choirs.” Eventually someone kindly donated a piano, and it was better than the app but still not in the kind of shape they needed in the long run, Johnson said. “It was out of tune, and we didn’t have the money to tune them, so I would transpose the keys in class every day,” she said. “That’s not an easy feat. But we got through. And our ultimate goal was a grand piano.” So she posted the plea for help on Facebook and waited. And the community responded. Johnson’s post was picked up by a local blogger and Helena October 2015 | 25

It’s a tight-knit community, and they were behind us 100 percent. Principal April Brand agreed. “The piano will be a huge asset to our choral program and its students,” she said. “As a new school, a piano purchase poses a substantial cost. The outpouring of community support for Mrs. Johnson and our choral students made purchasing a piano possible. Local creates swinging beds so others can ‘live life and relax’ Story by GRACE THORNTON Photographs by DAWN HARRISON October 2015 | 29

aniel Friday has found himself swinging a hammer a lot over the past few months. It’s been busy. It’s been hard work. But it’s brought something unexpected — a lot of rest. And that’s something he wants to spread around. With all that hammer swinging, he’s made a lot of swinging beds, a kind of heavy-duty decorative porch swing with a full-fledged mattress for a seat. “Everyone loves it. If there’s more than one person in the house, they’re fighting over the swinging bed,” said Daniel’s mom, Carolyn, with a laugh. She’s the one who kind of started the whole thing. Daniel, a Briarwood graduate and Indian

Springs Village native, was in the middle of a career transition earlier this year and looking for something different — really different. “It had been a really tough year,” he said. His job had been stressful, hard, and he kind of felt like he’d taken a beating. “I’d been in the student ministry, and I felt a lot of spiritual warfare in my life during that season,” he said. It felt like everything he knew about his life had been torn down — so it was time to build something new, he said. “I realized that the Lord had called me into a season of rest,” he said, noting that he needed time to work through some things, wrestle through some questions and learn some things about himself. “But I was bored out of my mind,” Daniel said.

ABOVE: Southern Swinging Beds can be made from corrugated metal, bead board, slatted wood and more. LEFT: Friday creates all of the beds by hand at his workshop in Hoover.

“I like to work with my hands — my dad and I had done a lot of woodwork in the past when I was an Eagle Scout. So I started building things just to have something to do.” First, birdhouses. Then some furniture. Then one day, his mom bought that swinging bed from a consignment store. “We got so many comments on it,” Carolyn said, “and I told Daniel I knew he could build them too — so why don’t you?” He stared at it for an hour, got it all figured out, and then he did just that. “It’s been good therapy for him to bang a hammer, beat on some wood and have some time to slow down,” she said. It’s been good business too. He sold one. And then another one. And then another. And in the midst of that hard-work therapy, he built Southern Swinging Beds, a local company whose website invites others to do just what Daniel’s been doing — “live life and relax.” “Southern Swinging Beds believes in hard work, but also knows the importance of being able to unplug from the chaos and relax,” Daniel writes on the company’s website. “Nature is one of the greatest gifts God has given to us. Being outdoors on a calm, sunny day can do the soul some good.” He knows from experience. “God has brought beauty from ashes in this season and taught me a lot about trust and how he provides daily bread,” Daniel said. “I thought I trusted him back then, but now I know I didn’t. I thought I had a plan for my life. He’s taught me a lot about being still in the midst of busyness and knowing that he is in control of my life — and that’s a good thing.” He wants that kind of stillness to be an encouragement to October 2015 | 33

others to find rest in their lives. And if a swinging bed can help them do it, then that’s great, too. He said he can build you a bed just like his mom’s in three days, if you like. Well, maybe not exactly like it — a modified version with a lot of improvements, Carolyn says with a smile. “He gives a lot of attention to detail, and he’s always liked the challenge of making things better,” she said. “That’s what he wanted when he was in student ministry — to help make people’s lives better. And he’s seen that happening in his life, too. This has been a time for him to put down some deeper roots.” Daniel said he’s learning to sit and listen, take one day at a time and trust. “I’ve been learning to walk by faith,” he said with a smile. 34 | ShelbyLiving.com

ABOVE: Southern Swinging Beds has customers throughout the Southeast.

“And it’s been a fun road so far.” Daniel builds several swinging bed models — one made with wood and corrugated metal, one made with slats, one with bead board and one with lattice. He also makes several sizes and designs. He spends one day collecting materials for each bed that’s ordered, then a whole day constructing and a whole day painting. He builds them in his garage in Hoover and ships them all over the Southeast. “It’s a niche market, but there aren’t many people doing it at the moment,” he said. “I enjoy it — the craftsmanship and the face-to-face time with each customer.” For more information, visit Southernswingingbeds.com. l October 2015 | 35

THE STORY behind the

SWEETS From humble beginnings, Edgar’s Bakery and Café grows to six locations across the state Story by MOLLY DAVIDSON Photographs by DAWN HARRISON

W

ith six locations across the state, it’s hard to believe Edgar’s Bakery and Cafe started out as a small, husband-and-wife bakery in Hoover. The story began 18 years ago, when owner Terry Smith decided to leave his more than 20-year career in the corporate world to open a scratch bakery. “It was just a God thing,” Terry’s wife and business partner, Dottie Smith, recalled. “We knew how risky it was.” Edgar’s first opened in Hoover, selling scratch-made baked goods and a small menu of deli items. The first years were difficult, full of long hours at the bakery and little money. “It was tough, I had sold my 401k to start the business,” Terry said. “The first four years, I did not pay myself a salary.” “He was sometimes there for 36 hours straight,” Dottie added. Family and friends pitched in during the early years, with Dottie and Terry’s sons working summer jobs at the bakery and Terry’s parents often stopping by to help wash dishes and bus tables. With their beautiful cakes and delicious baked goods, Edgar’s quickly became a staple in the Hoover community. Today, there are Edgar’s locations across the state, including storefronts in Greystone’s Cadence Place off of Cahaba Valley Road and on Southgate Drive in Pelham. Customers can choose from a wide range of pastries and desserts, including cookies, cheesecake bars, brownies, cakes, cupcakes and much more. Edgar’s also serves hot breakfast meals, such as omelets, pancakes, quiche and biscuits. October 2015 | 37

Although Edgar’s is now a multi-location business with 130 employees, the bakery still stays true to its small, family roots. Many of the bakery’s mainstay menu items are made from family recipes, from the chocolate buttercream cake icing created with Dottie’s mother’s recipe and the cookies made from Terry’s own recipe, to Dottie’s sister’s carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Even the bakery’s name is rooted in family, paying tribute to Terry’s father. 38 | ShelbyLiving.com

“That’s how we decided on the name, because we’re so proud of him,” Terry said of his father. “I told him we were going to put his name up in lights, and he’s been smiling ever since.” From brightening someone’s day with a cookie, to creating the perfect cake for a special occasion, nearly two decades of serving the community has created many memories for the Smith family. “Just to be part of everyone’s special occasions is so wonderful,” Dottie said. Through the many cakes Dottie has crafted at

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Edgar’s offers a variety of cakes each day, including Red Velvet, Italians Crème, German Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Carrot and more. Edgar’s, one particularly stands out in her mind. Edgar’s was commissioned to make a complicated topsy-turvy wedding cake for a military couple, a project that usually takes up to 14 hours, but the wedding date was moved up due to the husband’s unexpectedly early deployment, Dottie explained. “We were in the middle of making hundreds of chick and bunny cakes (for Easter),” Dottie recalled. “We knew how important it was to make everything just right. We all knew about that cake, and I asked (my fellow bakers), ‘Do you think there’s any way we can pull this off?’ And they said ‘Let’s try.’” The cake was a success, and recalling the bride’s reaction still brings tears to Dottie’s eyes. “That’s still the best one I think, the reward was so great,” Dottie said. “But every cake that goes out the door has its own special story. How cool is that?” Edgar’s is located at 6801 Cahaba Valley Road in Greystone and at 499 Southgate Drive in Pelham. Squash Noodles with Arugula Pesto This vegetarian dish is healthy and delicious

Story by KATIE MCDOWELL Recipe by STONE HOLLOW FARMSTEAD Photographs by DAWN HARRISON 42 | ShelbyLiving.com

“E

at your greens.” How many times have you heard that phrase – or said it to one of your children? It’s pretty easy to do when you serve this recipe for Squash Noodles with Arugula Pesto by Stone Hollow Farmstead. When coated with pesto, the squash noodles take on a green appearance. Squash comes in many varieties, and “most evidence suggests that squash is native to the New World, where it was widely cultivated by the Indians before European settlement,” according to the Encyclopedia Brittanica’s website. l Stone Hollow Farmstead is an artisan farm located at 2006 Dead Hollow Road in Harpersville. For more information, visit Stonehollowfarmstead.com or call 800-285-8950. October 2015 | 43

2. Cut off the bulbous (larger) end of each squash. 3. Cut off an inch or two of the other end of each squash. 4. Peel the squash and cut into 3-inch chunks. 5. Make the squash noodles using a spiralizer. If you do not have a spiralizer, you can use a vegetable peeler and shave squash ribbons. 6. Spread the noodles evenly on a baking tray. 7. Drizzle lightly with olive oil, season with salt and pepper. 8. Bake the noodles for about 7 minutes in a 400-degree oven.

ARUGULA PESTO 1/2 cups toasted walnuts 1 garlic clove, minced 2 cups, packed arugula leaves

SQUASH NOODLES 2 Medium butternut squash Olive oil Salt Pepper 1. Purchase squash that are evenly cylindrical.

Salt to taste 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil Juice of 1/2 lemon 1. Put all ingredients but olive oil in a food processor. 2. As it is blending, slowly add the olive oil until it is blended well, scraping sides of bowl down. 3. Toss squash noodles in a tablespoon of pesto sauce. 4. Garnish with sliced cherry tomatoes and fresh grated parmesan cheese.Â

“Keeping It Real” Program Creating a Buzz with 9th Grade Students Throughout Shelby County The Chamber’s Education Work Group has launched the 3rd year of its “Keeping It Real” Program. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by giving them a random-assigned “life scenario” which includes marital/family status, education, job and salary. The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education,

adding a second job, etc. based on the randomassigned scenario. Each year this program has been an eye-opening experience for the 9th graders and the volunteers that assist with the program. The Chamber is seeking volunteers on October 16 for Oak Mountain High School and October 23 for Calera High School. Volunteers would manage a station

and assist the students as they make decisions “paying bills” and make “life choices” based their situation. Your Chamber Is Build(ing) Something GREATER! During the month of October and November, volunteers from several Chamber member firms are contacting businesses about marketing opportunities for their businesses through event sponsorships. This new effort — called the TRC -- replaces the Chamber’s former “Continual Sponsorship” effort by encouraging volunteers to approach current chamber members in seeking sponsorships for the Chamber’s 2016 program year, new members and budgetreducing in-kind goods & services. So, if you’re looking to promote your business, launch a new product, share some

news about a new program — or you’re just looking to increase your company’s visibility in front of thousands of business and community leaders -- The Chamber’s TRC is an excellent way to do so. And, remember, the visibility our sponsors receive is more than just “at” the event — our sponsors also receive exposure prior to, during and after the events and programs through: Business Connections — the Chamber’s newsletter, EBusiness

Connections, the Chamber’s weekly programming updates, fliers for specific events which are distributed throughout the year, on the Chamber’s website, and follow-up marketing lists of attendees at the event or program that you’ve sponsored. Once, again, we’ve added even more sponsorship opportunities for 2016, so whatever your budget might be, there are some excellent and effective ways for your company to increase its exposure through the Chamber. If you want to learn more about these sponsorship opportunities and the TRC, please contact Aubri McClendon at the Chamber by phone at 663-4542, ext. 104 or via e-mail: aubri@ shelbychamber.org.

Creating a Safe Environment for Your Lungs In a country where chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth-leading cause of death, lung safety strategies are of the utmost importance. The lungs are very resilient and will last a lifetime if you take proper precautions and safety measures. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you breathe easy. Deep Breaths: Begin and end your day by taking slow, deep breaths in a clean air environment. The lung is a large organ so when you take a full breath cycle, your chest should expand all the way down to your abdomen. When you exhale try to push as much air out as possible. Taking as few as five to ten deep cleansing breaths will increase blood flow, oxygen levels and give you more energy. Incorporate Exercise: The same exercises that help your heart can also benefit your 2015 Health Focus Sponsor

respiratory function. Moderate walking, jogging, running, swimming and cycling can all improve your cardiorespiratory function when you remember to breathe well while participating in these activities. No Smoking: The number one enemy of respiratory health is cigarette smoke. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke can be even worse and that thirdhand smoke, just being in the same environment with smokers, is dangerous. Outdoor Pollution: Be aware of the air quality in your outdoor environments. Ozone and other pollutants can make being outside an unhealthy activity. You can view the U.S. government website, www.airnow.gov to get explanations of Air Quality Index (AQI) numbers and up-to-date information about air quality in your area. Indoor Pollution: Take measures to keep the air clean

while you are indoors. Have your house inspected for

radon exposure. Be aware of mold, pet dander and smoke from the fireplace. There are also harsh chemicals found in air fresheners, candles, aerosol sprays and household cleaners. Start taking preventative measures in your household by using items that clean your air such as beeswax candles, charcoal filters, plants, and non-toxic cleaners. Improve

ventilation by changing air filters often and by opening windows on clean air days. Fresh Air at Work: Make sure you wear protective equipment when working in dusty environments or with

chemicals. When at all possible choose safe products with low levels of chemical exposure. You can find a list of the 10 Worst Jobs for Your Lungs at www. health.com. Eat Your Greens: Research published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that eating cruciferous vegetable foods high in antioxidants, not supplements, can greatly decrease the risk of lung cancer. Examples of these foods are broccoli, bok choy, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, and arugula. Laura A. Reeder, C.H.E.S, A.A.H.C.C. St. Vincent’s Wellness Services

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

ROY SEWELL “Beautiful scenery, the outdoors and great healthcare”

R

oy Sewell is the president of Greystone Golf and Country Club. He and his wife, Cathy, have two grown daughters, Melissa and Heather. The University of Georgia graduate started out as a pharmacist but spent the majority of his career with Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals in Sales and Marketing. Upon retirement from Eli Lilly, Sewell and a business partner opened their own business in the automotive and finance sector. Photograph CONTRIBUTED What changes and milestones have you witnessed at the club over the years? During my 12 years as a member, I have observed many significant and positive changes at Greystone. These include the membership purchasing the club from the Daniel Corporation and becoming a member owned club. In 2014, the club signed an agreement with the Senior PGA Tour to host the first major tournament on the Senior Tour schedule (Regions Tradition) for a three-year period from 2016-2018. This is somewhat of a “homecoming” as Greystone hosted the Bruno’s Memorial Classic Senior Tour event from 1992-2005. Additionally, in 2014, Greystone began a major building initiative where we built a new Golf Operations Facility at the Founders Course, a new teaching center at the Legacy Course (both are now open) and are in the process of completing a complete renovation of the Founders Clubhouse lower level which will house a state-ofthe-art fitness center, child care, massage therapy, a new restaurant, bar and kitchen allowing us to better serve our current and new members as well as host larger and better events. What are your thoughts on Greystone hosting the Regions Tradition tournament in May 2016? The membership sees this as a true 82 | ShelbyLiving.com

homecoming as the Senior Tour returns to Greystone following its departure at the end of 2005. This time, however, the PGA Senior Tour returns as a major, which means a four-day tournament with the best golfers in the world. This is exciting for the membership as well as the entire Birmingham community. This event highlights the entire city of Birmingham and Shelby County as the world’s best Senior Tour players converge upon Birmingham, live television coverage is on the Golf Channel (providing great exposure for the community) and the event significantly benefits the entire city financially. What are Greystone Golf and Country Club’s plans moving forward? One of our goals is ensuring that the Champions Tour event is outstanding and we would like to see it remain at Greystone beyond the current contract period … The club will soon begin to initiate dialogue regarding a new medium- to long-term strategic plan that will look at our other facilities such as swim and tennis and begin to think about future needs. It is our belief that for the club to be a premier country club, we must continue to deliver the best experience for our members while creating a club that attracts new members. Growth in membership, the experience we deliver to our current membership along with staying current

with the changing needs and expectations of members/potential members is our key to success now and in the future. What do you love about Shelby County? Having never been to Birmingham prior to moving here, the first thing that attracted us to the community was the topography. My wife and I love mountains and Shelby County provides beautiful scenery to enjoy … We also enjoy the outdoors and enjoy hiking and the lakes in the area. Now that our children are grown, we enjoy the various restaurants and shopping that are available close to Greystone while the also having easy access to events that take place in downtown Birmingham. Additionally, Shelby County offers some of the best in health care resources in the Southeast. What are your hobbies? Golf, hiking and starting to enjoy canoeing and kayaking with my wife. My wife loves animal rescue and transport as well as crocheting. What is your favorite meal? My wife’s beef stroganoff. What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do or learn? Have always had an interest in learning to fly a small plane. If I were as successful at flying as golf, it would not be a pretty picture. l
