he votes have been counted, and the results of Shelby Living’s 2016 Best of the Best contest are in! We are so excited to share our readers’ favorite restaurants, businesses and festivals in Shelby County for the sixth straight year. The thousands of votes cast this year are a testament to the caliber of products, services and people we have in the county. As you look through the winners and finalists for 2016, consider their inclusion in Best of the Best a positive recommendation from fellow Shelby County residents. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of early detection of the disease that affects one in eight women and one in 1,000 men in the U.S. I had the pleasure of getting to know Betty Shivers, a local breast cancer survivor who is using her experience to help other women going through similar circumstances. Shivers and another breast cancer survivor at her church decided to form a support group to walk alongside others battling the disease. About four months ago, Shivers extended her efforts beyond
the group, and started volunteering as a mentor with Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center, a new program that launched earlier this year to provide holistic and supportive services for women and their families grappling with breast cancer diagnoses, treatment and after effects. As a mentor, Shivers talks to people through telephone calls, emails, text messages and cards in the mail. She serves as a listener, encourager and sometimes a liaison between a patient and Forge. I hope you find her story and ongoing outreach efforts as inspiring as I do. More information about Forge and ways to become involved are included in this issue. On a lighter note, you can also read about the annual Life Raft Debate held at the University of Montevallo. This year’s debate is set for Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Whether you attend or listen to the live stream broadcast, you won’t want to miss the event that keeps students and faculty talking the rest of the year. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the rest of fall! l

ith a blink of the eye, “what’s old is new again.” Or is it? Maybe you’re telling yourself that because something is still in good shape, or was a great price, or one day you’ll be able to zip up those pants! When you look around your Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, home, office and closets, what Simpleworks.guru do you see that is outdated and lisa@simpleworks.guru irrelevant to your life going forward? 205.981.7733 Be honest. Clutter can creep into our lives in a blink of an eye, even when we feel we’ve been so diligent in our housekeeping. Clutter doesn’t just mean excessive and disorganized, it also can mean outdated. uElectronics. We all remember the first cell phone and we excitingly called it “the brick.” The phone began to get smaller, moving into the favorite “flip phone,” then trends changed to include a keyboard and the size increased. Now we’re going smaller again—would someone make up their mind! Chances are you have a version of all these phones stored in a corner of a closet. Maybe even in a zip-loc bag to keep them organized. Pretty sure you won’t see a need to go back to outdated technology, so with that logic, let’s clear them out of your space. Use the same thought process for stereos, fax machines, boom boxes, cassette players and 8-track players. uBooks. Oxford English Dictionary added 1,000 new words with its June 2016 update. Webster’s version adds 4,000 new words per year. Manspreading, wine o’clock, and awesomeness now replaces words like snollygoster, tattletale gray and Vitamin G. Many still want the physical version of a dictionary; make sure you’re using the most current version. uPaper. Most offices have reduced or completely eliminated the need for filing cabinets. Today, our documents are in the cloud so we can virtually access anything we need from anywhere. No more standing over a file drawer going through crumbled manilla folders looking for that one document. A word search pulls it right up. When you tell your children that you used to alphabetize your folders, well that’s like the stories you heard from your grandparents about walking to school, barefoot, uphill, AND in the snow. Just because something still works or has hardly been used does not make it useful in today’s world. Something that is a few years old, yet has no relevance, is a dinosaur, or another word that we haven’t even thought of yet. And that baby monitor? Out it goes too, because there’s an app for that. It’s that simple. l

he eye is drawn to an old screen door, hanging just inside The Coal Yard gallery space, from which a little girl’s pouting face peers out—a mixed media work by artist Fay Hutto Black. “Remember the Sabbath” portrays her memory, one Hutto Black says seems very old-fashioned now, of being a little girl and upset with her grandmother in Winona, Miss. “She insisted I wear my church clothes all day and not go outdoors or get dirty. She wouldn’t even let me cut with scissors on Sunday,” Hutto Black said with a smile. Many of Hutto Black’s works are of large scale and mixed media incorporating acrylic or oil paint. They are signed Hutto, as they were created during her marriage to Dr. W.B. Hutto, who practiced Internal Medicine at Loyola Hospital before passing away at just 53. “I never liked the idea of size restrictions,” she 6 | ShelbyLiving.com
notes. “I needed to express my ideas fully.” Several now on the walls of The Coal Yard gallery space have won awards through the years in shows around Birmingham. “The Fisherman’s Wife” won first prize in the 1967 Birmingham Art Association Juried Show, and her work has been shown at Littlehouse Galleries in Vestavia. Fay Hutto Black grew up in Gulfport, Miss. She attended Ward-Belmont College in Nashville for two years, then earned a degree in art from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation, she taught junior high school in Jackson, Miss. This was in 1949, at the first Mississippi school to offer art classes. “I was really happy to get that job,” she notes, “as there were not many art teacher positions.” After teaching two years, she took the opportunity to work as a designer/illustrator for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg. There, she was one of some 10 workers at her drafting table creating bulletins, brochures and

illustrating machinery and equipment designs. Rosalie Oetting first met artist Hutto Black when she visited the Ice and Coal Gallery with her daughter, Polly Levert, prior to the restaurant opening. “They came in and we had a marvelous conversation and I fell in love with her and her spirit,” Oetting recalls. “The next week, she came back and brought me ‘Remember the Sabbath’—it has been hanging there since.” Hutto Black believes studying portrait painting to be an integral part of her training. At Ward-Belmont, there was, of course, then no nude painting of models, but she later studied under several prominent teachers—Frank Tauriello, Paul Leville, Gordon Wetmore (Portrait Society of America), Daniel Greene (the foremost pastelist in the United States) and Ed Jones. One of the founders of the Vestavia Hills Art Association, a board member of the Bluff Park Art Association and the Alabama Watercolor Society, Hutto Black is a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists. Her daughter, Polly Levert, art teacher at Our Lady of Sorrows, shared, “Mom taught me to draw early in elementary school. Later she taught me to draw people and I modeled for her figure drawing classes. “I listened to what she told her students and applied it to my own efforts. She also taught me to love art which led me to becoming an art teacher.” The work of Fay Hutto Black is now part of the permanent collection in The Coal Yard gallery space and may be seen during regular business hours. l October 2016 | 7

A special gallery exhibit celebrating artist Lynn Dodson’s work and her 10th anniversary of teaching for the Shelby County Arts Council will open Nov. 3.
he Shelby County Arts Council has been fortunate to host a wealth of great artists over the years. Whether they are visiting, taking classes or teaching, we get to be a part of their creative world if only for a short time. One such artist is Lynn Dodson. Dodson has spent many years inspiring students and fellow artists at the Shelby County Arts Council. Now the gallery proudly opens its doors to a very special exhibit of Dodson’s work celebrating her 10th anniversary of teaching for the SCAC. Dodson’s love of painting began when she was just a teenager. She was not pleased to leave her friends behind when her family moved from Homewood to Shelby County. Her mother contacted a family friend and artist, Orville Allen, and asked if he had room in his painting classes for one more student. “His reply was, ‘I’ll make room!’ ... and he did,” says Dodson. “I’ll always be indebted to him.” After those first painting classes she went on to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Montevallo and has worked full-time as a freelance artist since then. She draws inspiration for her work from a variety of sources. “Light on an object, shadows, colors, textures,
fabrics, songs ... and the list goes on,” says Dodson. “Visiting galleries and museums also charges my creative battery.” Dodson began teaching painting at the SCAC 10 years ago. Since then she has gone on to teach numerous students and produce countless works of art. “Over the years I have taught painting classes, drawing classes, mixed-media workshops, youth art camps and even an overnight painting retreat. I’ve been blessed with so many wonderful students and I have learned so much through teaching them,” Dodson says. “The exchange between student and teacher is very gratifying to me.” “Art by Lynn Dodson” opens Nov. 3 at the SCAC gallery. The opening reception will be from 6-8 p.m. Come see an incredible collection from Dodson’s long career and meet the artist herself. “I hope everyone will come out to the opening,” says Dodson. “I’ve worked hard to deliver a body of work that will hopefully be exciting to experience. Who knows, it might even spark you to sign up for a class.” l

Surviving and thriving
Breast cancer affects thousands of women and men every year. With October designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we caught up with Betty Shivers, a breast cancer survivor and volunteer for Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center, a new organization focused on helping survivors and cosurvivors acclimate to life after cancer. For Shivers, beating cancer is about more than getting well; it’s about helping others reach the same point. October 2016 | 9

etty Shivers is many things: a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a retired high school math teacher, a tennis player, a cook, a sewer, a tutor. “I stay very, very busy,” Shivers said. The 66-year-old plays tennis in three different leagues, enjoys biking and being outdoors and loves her 5-year-old granddaughter as only a devoted grandmother can. Shivers exudes optimism, a trait she said has carried her through difficult times, including the months following her breast cancer diagnosis about six years ago. Shivers can add “survivor” to her list of life roles, and now, she belongs to a growing group of people who volunteer to help breast cancer patients, survivors and cosurvivors through Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center. Prior to her involvement with Forge starting about four months ago, however, Shivers organized a local support group at her church, Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover, with friend and fellow cancer survivor Bette Graffeo, who was diagnosed nearly a month after Shivers. “We walked our journey, and once we got to a point where we were better, we met and said, ‘Let’s — Betty Shivers see if we can’t start a group,’” Shivers said. The group meets once a month at the church. “We have had speakers, but our primary purpose is to address any needs of any of the members that are going through their journey.” With Shivers’ connection to Forge and Graffeo’s involvement with the Susan G. Komen organization, the group at Prince of Peace has the resources needed in making a difference for people affected by cancer, while maintaining a smaller, intimate environment at the monthly meetings.
“We’re very excited about this new center being a part of our community. I just think it’s going to help many, many, many people.”
Betty Shivers knows what it’s like to walk the journey through breast cancer. That’s why she volunteers her time through Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center.

RIGHT BOTTOM: Shivers sits with her friend Helen Baty, who Shivers mentored while Baty went through her journey with cancer.
Currently, Shivers is a mentor with Forge, which means she communicates with people via handwritten cards, telephone calls, emails and texts, serving as a liaison between patients and other entities. She listens, encourages and offers support, and when she can’t personally help a person with a specific problem, Shivers refers her to someone who can help. “It’s a good fit,” she said of the role, adding, “I have a huge mailing group list where I send a daily reflection every morning. It can be silly and serious and scriptural based. I feel that’s a big part of what I’m called to do to help – to try to help somebody feel a little better for the day.” Shivers said she knows the value of a solid network of
people committed to lifting up a cancer patient in times of fear, pain and grief. In the summer of 2010, at 60 years old, Shivers received the news she had ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer that hasn’t spread to surrounding tissue. “I was really lucky,” she said. “It was only on my right side, but with my surgeon’s recommendations and my feeling ... I elected to have a double mastectomy.” Although she didn’t have to have chemotherapy radiation, Shivers was hospitalized again after her surgery when she developed a large infection. “That was probably the harder part of the whole thing,” October 2016 | 13

she said. “I didn’t realize how sick I was. Once we got through that hurdle, I was good to go.” Shivers described the moments after she absorbed the news of her diagnosis as “very shocking.” “It was tough,” she said. “I thought, you know, I’m going to be OK. I have support, I have strong faith, I’ve got great doctors. I told my friends, I said, ‘Hey, this is just a bump in the road. I’m going to get through it.’” About 10 days after the phone call, Shivers had her surgery at Brookwood. In a span of four or five months, she received more than 50 cards in the mail from friends expressing well wishes and encouragement. She even received a visit from two friends, a husband and wife, who dressed in cheerleading outfits and performed cheers they wrote for Shivers. “That meant the world to me,” Shivers said. “It was just hilarious. Couldn’t have been better.” Now, Shivers is in a position to return the favor. Making connections with other women and providing

them with support they need are rewarding to Shivers. “It couldn’t be more rewarding to see someone say, ‘Thank you so much for reaching out to me,’” she said. In addition to breast cancer patient and survivor services, Forge offers co-survivors – family members or caregivers of patients and survivors – support in the form of counseling and other outlets. “Forge can help some of these co-survivors that have a whole different set of issues,” Shivers said. “To me, that’s taking it a whole other step than just taking care of the patient.” Forge volunteers differ in age and backgrounds, but all are focused on one purpose: supporting other women in similar circumstances, and helping them “to realize that normalcy really can be restored.” And more volunteers are needed, as are prayers and awareness, according to Shivers. “We’re very excited about this new center being a part of our community,” Shivers said. “I just think it’s going to help many, many, many people.” l

“W
hy Forge?” This short question opens a door for people like Rebecca Di Piazza to talk about a new resource available for breast cancer patients, survivors and their families. As project director of Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center, and a breast cancer survivor in her own right, Di Piazza has a list of reasons the word “forge” is special to her. “There is no other program in the country where you have competing health systems working together to build a patient-centered program,” she said. “It’s really remarkable. We like to believe we have some of the brightest minds in healthcare in Birmingham that are building and developing this program.” The initiative – a project Di Piazza and many others in healthcare have been working on for years – was developed and supported by Brookwood Baptist Health, Grandview Medical Center, St. Vincent’s Health System, UAB Medicine, UAB School of Nursing and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. “We have executive leadership from all four health systems in Birmingham,” Di Piazza said. “They meet once a month. They have been key to building our strategic plan. We as a staff are here to execute what they have developed and what we have learned from our community profile.” About four months ago, the Breast Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation Initiative unveiled Forge as the official name of the community-based therapeutic program, “chosen to represent and embody the spirit of survivorship and the personal triumph over cancer.” The program’s focus is on providing holistic and supportive services for women and their families coping with breast cancer and its aftermath. Forge launched in May and serves Shelby, Jefferson, Blount, St. Clair and Walker counties. The five-county area holds a population of 2,500 breast cancer survivors, according to Di Piazza. The lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000 in U.S. men, according to the American Cancer Society, and about 1 percent of all breast cancer cases occur in men. This program is not going to go away.” Breast cancer survivor and Forge mentor Betty Shivers noted how important the services Forge offers are to people with limited access to healthcare. “It’s a huge service to be able to provide,” Shivers said. “‘Forge ahead,’ the whole concept, paints the picture that life is going to move on, and you’re going to be able to get to a better place.” Forge also provides support for co-survivors,

For more information about Forge, visit forgeon.org, call 1-800-811-8925 or email info@ forgeon.org. “I think mainly we need our community to know this is out there,” Di Piazza said. “We want to touch as many lives as possible.” l

Scheduling surgery by the season What patients should know about following doctors’ orders Story by DR. JUSTIN GERTH
I
t’s October. As I drive to the new Outpatient Surgery Center at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, I’m enjoying not just the seasonal beauty surrounding that facility, but the opportunity to provide state-of-the-art, close-to-home surgery for area residents. This is the month when many patients consult me about surgical procedures they put off until after summer vacations, football games or corporate deadlines. They realize that hernia repair their primary care physician suggested or gallbladder surgery their GI doctor recommended can’t be put off any longer. Some patients with other concerns, including abnormal mammograms, have waited and worried unnecessarily. Often I wish they had seen me sooner, so that I could explain the following: uIt’s better to treat early. If your physician suggests a surgical consult
20 | ShelbyLiving.com
this month, get it done before the holidays. A thyroid mass, skin lesion or other concern is unlikely to get better on its own, and could be a cancer that progresses. uEarly surgery usually means smaller incisions. Hernias and masses can get so large that they can’t be repaired laparoscopically or robotically. Laparoscopic surgery allows for smaller incisions and helps with quicker recoveries. uOnce your doctor suggests a surgical consult, you probably don’t need a new physician referral. Although, you should double-check your insurance plan. uYou have easy access to St. Vincent’s One Nineteen’s state-of-the-art surgical suites. Although not everyone is a candidate for minimally-invasive surgery, many patients are. Area residents now have access to the latest outpatient
technology close-to-home. Overall, I suggest patients not schedule their surgeries by the season, but by their physicians’ recommendations. After all, anytime is a great time to make your health a priority. As part of its recent expansion, St. Vincent’s One Nineteen now conveniently offers outpatient surgery on its campus. Located at 7191 Cahaba Valley Road in Hoover, the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Outpatient Surgery Center provides same-day procedures, including General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Plastic surgery, Pain management, ENT, GI and Gynecology. To learn more about the wide range of services on the One Nineteen campus, visit Onenineteen.com. l Dr. Justin Gerth is a general surgeon at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.

EDUCATION
One spot left UM professors to defend disciplines in annual Life Raft Debate
U
niversity of Montevallo philosophy professor Michael Patton had no idea how successful the Life Raft Debate would be when he and the Philosophy Club started it at the university in 1997. Patton said he was introduced to the Life Raft Debate concept at Vanderbilt University in 1979, and when the UM Philosophy Club was “casting about for things to do,” he decided to try implementing the debate in Montevallo. The first debate drew about 120 people to Comer Hall. “It was a success,” Patton said. “It’s succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.” Eventually, the audience outgrew Comer, which seats about 250 people, and the debate relocated to Palmer Auditorium to accommodate about 800 hundred students, faculty and community members that attend each year. “In the Life Raft Debate, we imagine that there has been a nuclear war, and the survivors (the audience) are setting sail to rebuild society from the ground up,” the Life Raft Debate website reads. “There is a group of academic-types vying to get on the raft, and only one seat is left. Each professor has to argue that his or her discipline is the one indispensable area of study that the new civilization will need to flourish.” Each professor has an opportunity to give an introductory speech on his or her discipline,
46 | ShelbyLiving.com
Story by EMILY SPARACINO
followed by a brief rebuttal to the other professors after their speeches. The audience votes all but one panelist off, and the winning professor is presented with the Oar, a time-honored piece passed down to the new winner every year. “You get a plaque adhered to the Oar when you win,” Patton said, noting an Oar is retired when it is full of plaques. Some years, a twist on the regular debate comes in the form of the Devil’s Advocate, a professor on the panel who argues against all disciplines, trying to convince the audience the raft is better off without any of the professors. The debate coincides with UM Founders’ Day. The 19th annual Life Raft Debate will be held Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. UM University Relations Marketing Manager Tiffany R. Bunt was a student at the university when the debate started. “As a student, I thought it was impressive that faculty members would put themselves out there like that and defend their discipline,” Bunt said. “They hold their own.” Patton said the debate urges people to consider the contribution each one makes to the whole. The UM Mass Communications Department live streams the debate. The link will be available on LifeRaftDebate.com the day of the debate. “I don’t see ever letting this go,” Patton said. “I believe and hope it will outlive me.” l

“Keeping It Real” Program Continues for 9th Grade Shelby County Students! The Chamber’s Education Work Group is kicking off the 4th year of its “Keeping It Real” Program. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by giving them a random-assigned “life scenario” which includes marital/ family status, education, job and salary. The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education, adding a second job, etc. based on the random-assigned scenario. Each year this program has been an eye-opening experience for the 9th graders and the volunteers that assist with the program. The Chamber is seeking

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY
Dane Lawley:
“You are always looking for something better, but I never did find a place better than Chelsea High School”

Photograph by CARI DEAN he idea of wanting to live anywhere besides Shelby County is unthinkable to Westover resident Dane Lawley. Lawley, 59, retired this year from his position as band director at Chelsea High School after 38 years of service. “You are always looking for something better, but I never did find a place better than Chelsea High School,” he said. “It is such a great community and school. Someone once told me that Chelsea is the best kept secret in Shelby County!” Lawley and his wife of 35 years, Tania, have As the former Chelsea High School two children and attend New Life Church, band director, what are your plans for where Dane plays bass guitar on the Praise retirement? and Worship Team. Do the things that have been on my What do you love about Shelby County? bucket list for so many years. I am still teaching and working with some of the Shelby County is home! I am from a local music stores on a part-time basis military family and my father was in the but I am really enjoying doing the things U.S. Air Force for 22 years. We moved that I want to do, when I want to do around a lot but we always returned to Alabama. I have lived all over the U.S. and even out of the country. Why would anyone want to live anywhere else other than Shelby County?

What positions have you held over the years? I was band director at Chelsea High School for 38 years. When I started at Chelsea School we were a unit school with grades K-12 in the same building
with one principal and we had 12 band students in grades 7-12. Four of those students were majorettes and one was a flag corps member! We eventually wound up with 21 students in the marching band my first year. In 1992 the high school (grades 9-12) moved to the “new” school on Highway 11. I was still the band director at both schools for years. Eventually we were fortunate to get a middle school director, Mrs. Deana Rizzo, a Chelsea High School graduate and former student of mine. When did you decide you wanted to be a school band director? Why? I decided to become a band director very early in high school. It was easy for me since my family was so involved with the old Southern Gospel music. What was your favorite thing about your job? I really enjoyed working with the students. They kept me feeling young and I probably learned just as much from them as they did from me on a daily basis. Every day was a new adventure that I looked forward to. Of course you have to remember, band was probably everyone’s favorite class of the day and we had fun most every day making music.
