from the editor ON THE COVER

SSpringtime yields beautiful flowers, warmer weather and above all–more sunlight, my favorite. I genuinely feel better emotionally when I am able to be outdoors, soaking in vitamin D.

Springtime also means a plethora of community events I look forward to each year. Veterans Park–a place I grew up playing volleyball and chasing ice cream trucks–will host events such as the Judy M. Merritt 5K and Family Fun Day and Celebrate Hoover Day this March and April.

Whether it be holidays such as Easter or community-wide festivals, springtime, to me, is the best season of the year. January blues are behind us, and summer is right around the corner. I find myself the happiest I am all year–especially when I am able to enjoy the company of others.

While interviewing Kyle Tyree, Lauren Nicholson and Dani Parmar–the three Shelby County Schools alumni who help run InToto Creative Arts (page 47)–I realized that I am not the only one who craves the fellowship in a community that springtime often fosters. This nonprofit provides resources and opportunities for those affected by homelessness, incarceration, mental health issues and more to engage in artistic expression.

Kyle, who graduated from Briarwood Christian School, helped found InToto Creative Arts with a desire to promote both inclusiveness and healing in an otherwise stigmatized community.

With the help of multiple volunteers and board members, Kyle created classes that he and others could teach at Birmingham organizations, who cater to the needs of these communities. Lauren, a Chelsea High School graduate, says she became involved with InToto Creative Arts not to “rescue people,” but to help provide a sense of community because everyone deserves to feel loved.

Dani, who grew up in Alabaster and attended Creek View Elementary School, agrees that people flourish when they feel supported. What they all realized is that no matter where one lives or what he has to his name, people crave connection–inclusion–and such fellowship is only strengthened in diversity.

Talking with them, I very quickly realized that while I do enjoy springtime, it isn’t so much the season as it is the increased opportunities to spend with my loved ones that make me feel so happy. We live in such a polarizing society. For us to ever establish and maintain peace, we must first learn to love one another–beginning by looking past stereotypes and appreciating people for who they are.

I encourage you all, readers, to heed the message of InToto Creative Arts and challenge yourselves on how you, too, can foster inclusivity in your communities.

ARTS CULTURE&

JOYFUL MEMENTOS

The Neon Leopard creates tangible memories to honor those dear to one’s heart.

HHearts hung low one cloudy morning as students returned to school–with one less friend, one less smiling face–that will never be seen this side of heaven again. This sophomore braved her high school hallways for the first time since that fateful day, clutching her wrist, sporting the olive and yellow beads spelling out the name of her best friend.

Her eyes follow the pattern of her own footsteps, avoiding the glances of pity from her classmates. It was almost too much for her to bear.

Just as the tears welled in her eyes, she gently turned her memento around, reading her friend’s name. Although bittersweet, a spark of hope flickers in the young girl’s heart.

Grandma, 1983, Pelham Panthers–these are but a few of the names and dates that Angie Bell,

founder and designer of The Neon Leopard, has created on her bracelets to commemorate those who her customers love. Whether hearing stories of sorrow or joy, Angie makes it her mission to pay tribute to her customers’ loved ones through her creations.

The jewelry artist realized long ago that she had a passion for people–a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. The only question was, “How?”

A veteran of corporate commercialization, Angie became sick of high gloss fashion and decided postpandemic to venture into the industry with her own twist–creating wearable art whose purpose was to bring hope, joy, even peace to the community.

“I love anything that I can put somebody’s name on, so it’s personalized to them,” Angie says. “When

they look down, they have a sweet reminder of a family member or a special date. I wear my son’s name, my husband’s initials and our anniversary date pretty much every day.”

Like many others, Angie’s yearning to fulfill her creative void ignited during the COVID-19 pandemic. With ample time on her hands, she began creating bracelet stacks for her mother, who adored jewelry but struggled to find bracelets that fit her petite wrists.

Angie assumed the challenge, incorporating glass beads, gemstones and elastic string that she sourced from local vendor markets into her art. The motherdaughter duo flaunted their newfound creations for several months before a few of Angie’s gal pals inquired about how they, too, could purchase some of Angie’s jewelry.

Angie–no stranger to the robust atmosphere of merchant sales–had previously been a vendor selling Color Street nail polish for several years before she decided to start selling her own jewelry. While she never anticipated the volume of sales nor the exciting following she would soon acquire, Angie quickly adapted to meet the hearts of her customers.

“It really was supposed to be a little bit of a hobby that has now grown into a fun business,” Angie says.

The Neon Leopard–whose moniker references Angie’s love of neon pink and sparkly fashion–is fitting for the business, especially considering Angie’s mantra: Originality is the best fashion one can flaunt. As The Neon Leopard began growing in popularity, Angie started creating for larger

clientele, such as the Pelham Middle School cheerleading team, whose green and black bracelets showcase the team’s name and mascot.

Several football moms can be seen every Friday night, sporting the Panthers’ colors and their sons’ names or jersey numbers. Students and parents representing nearly every high school in Shelby County pride themselves while wearing their custom school spirit around their necks or on their wrists, and it’s all thanks to The Neon Leopard.

Angie has created jewelry commemorating her customers’ birthdays, anniversaries, sports teams, loved ones’ names and more. Whether they purchase a neutral design or custom-order something new, Angie looks forward to each challenge.

Glancing through The Neon Leopard’s variety, customers will appreciate the uniqueness in every design. No two bracelets–unless custom ordered for groups–will be the same.

Mediums including glass, pearls, rare stones and yes, sometimes high-quality plastic, are utilized in The Neon Leopard’s designs, whose intricate rarities are far and few between. Angie can twiddle beads and stones onto her string wraps for hours, but no matter the time that passes, she considers each creation a labor of love.

Why? Because for every bracelet or pair of earrings she creates, Angie knows what it will mean to her customers. Oftentimes, she says, people just need a simple reminder of those who they love–whether they are living, living in the same home or living hours away.

PURCHASING THE NEON LEOPARD

Those wishing to purchase Angie’s jewelry in-store can visit A Birthday Place, which is located at 3186 D Pelham Parkway. It is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

For customers interested in attending local vendor markets, Angie will be selling her jewelry at The Market at Brock’s Gap on select Saturdays throughout the spring. The Market at Brock’s Gap is located at Brock’s Gap Brewing Company (500 Mineral Trace, Suite 100). It is open every Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon this season.

“I love when someone tells me that they look at their arm and have a little spark of happiness throughout the day,” Angie says. “I like to make things that make people feel special–it’s not just something you can walk in a store and buy.”

Happiness does not have a price tag. It cannot be found in-store.

What is so remarkable about these pieces of

jewelry is not how they are made or what they look like; rather, it is the time and effort Angie takes to make each one complement not only one’s wardrobe, but also one’s pursuit of happiness her loved ones, passions and more provide.

Follow The Neon Leopard on Instagram @the.neon.leopard to view Angie’s jewelry or direct message her about purchasing.

READ THIS BOOK

Literary Fiction

Recommendations from

Go as a River

Lynn Thomas has been a part of the Chelsea Public Library staff since 2019. Her favorite thing about working at the library is facilitating the book club, which she has done since joining the library staff. Her favorite genre to read is literary fiction because it is strongly character driven and explores themes and commentary about life and the human condition. Here are a few of her recent favorites.

Against the backdrop of the planned flooding of Iola, Colorado, by the once wild Gunnison River, 17-year-old Victoria Nash meets a young drifter, and their lives are changed forever. Spanning a timeline from 1948-1971, themes of loss, prejudice, redemption and what makes a home are sensitively explored in this wonderful debut novel.

The Collected Regrets of Clover

In her work as a death doula, Clover Brooks has dedicated her life to helping people peacefully navigate through their end-of-life process. Along the way, however, she has forgotten what it means to live her own life and let go of past regrets. It takes a kind but quirky “found family” and a new love to help Clover stop hiding and start living.

The River We Remember

In the small town of Jewel, Minnesota, in 1958, a wealthy land-owner with no shortage of enemies has been found murdered. Local Sheriff Brody Dern, along with several others in the close-knit community who carry the physical and emotional scars of WWII, is tasked with the job of uncovering the truth. The problem is whether the truth they seek is different from the truth they want.

The Dearly Beloved

Two young married couples: Charles and Lily, James and Nan. Charles and James are ministers, each answering a call to co-shepherd a foundering but historic congregation through the turbulent 1960s in urban Chicago. Faith, unbelief and what it means to bear each other’s burdens is given a thought-provoking look in this debut novel.

All the Children Are Home

A deeply emotional story about a foster family: Parents Dahlia and Louie and their four children, Jimmy, Zaida, Jon and Agnes, in a small Massachusetts town in the 1950s. This book is a moving tribute to the overcoming power of love in a “family by choice.”

SIMPLY SPRINGTIME

This spring is the perfect time to get out and explore all of the great things happening at the SCAC.

With the addition of the entertainment district, Columbiana has become a hub for community. Springtime provides the perfect weather for patrons to get out and enjoy a glass of wine at Just a Tish or dinner in a local restaurant such as Blue Agave. Right down the road, the Shelby County Arts Council’s hosting of performances in the Song Theater provide the perfect date night or night-out with friends. Everyone is sure to see some worldclass musicians in this state-of-the-art venue.

Returning on Friday, March 1, is Eat a Peach, a tribute to the Allman Brothers. Enjoy masterful renditions of your favorite Allman Brothers tunes! This show is performed live, just as the brothers would have done it, by some of the South’s finest musicians. These guys truly pay homage to the iconic band. Joining us on Saturday, March 9, is British Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Matt Schofield! Schofield joins us for the first time in the Song Theater. He’s been rated as one of the top British guitarists of all time, ranking him alongside legends such as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. You won’t want to miss this stop on his U.S. tour. Bron-YrAur, a tribute to Led Zeppelin, will take the stage on Saturday, March 23. We’re always adding great new performances to the calendar, so be sure to check out the SCAC’s website or social media to see all the happenings.

Each spring also brings one of the SCAC’s favorite art exhibits, the Statewide High School Juried Art Exhibit. This juried art exhibit is open to all Alabama high school students in 10th-12th grade. There is no charge for students to enter up to two works of art in various mediums into this show. Sponsored by the University of Montevallo’s art department and UAB’s department of art and art history, this show gives high schoolers an opportunity to enter a

professional-level art exhibit. THE RIGHT KICK

Patrick McDonald models the character of a reigning soccer champion both on and off the field.

IImagine a trail of footprints spanning miles farther than the naked eye can see–and that is the length of a legacy. Such can only be defined by a succinct group of individuals whose impact, like a ripple, affects more than they, the wavemakers, may ever know.

Pelham High School soccer coach Patrick McDonald’s legacy began when his parents first signed him up to play soccer in grade school. It grew as he did, playing four years of varsity soccer at Hillcrest High School.

After Patrick graduated, he attended the University of Montevallo, where he double-majored in biology and history and later received his master’s in education. His first job out of school was teaching

sixth grade science at Vincent Middle School in 2003.

The following year, Patrick transferred to teach eighth grade physical science at Riverchase Middle School (now known as Pelham Park Middle School), where he founded the school’s first-ever soccer program.

Patrick coached middle school soccer from 20042006, and in 2007, he was recruited to be the head boys soccer coach at Pelham High School. That year, Pelham High School only had one senior and a couple of juniors, having only won two out of 10 games the season before.

Fearlessly, Patrick dove in head-first, drilling his players into outworking the odds stacked against

22 March/April 2024

them. At the same time, he continued raising up his middle school players, pouring his time and energy into every student’s capabilities.

“We attributed a lot of our success to starting the program at the middle school,” Patrick says. “I feel it really helped propel our team to have the success we have today.”

After only two seasons, Pelham High School made the playoffs in 2009 for the first time since 1999 and only the fourth time in school history. The team clinched playoffs again in 2010-2013, 20152019 and 2021-2023, and finally in 2017, Pelham won its first state championship.

In 2022, Pelham unfortunately lost in double overtime in the state finals to Mountain Brook High School. In 2023, the Panthers made it to the playoffs but initially lost in an upset to McAdory High School by one point before McAdory forfeited the win.

Some may see Pelham’s track record as impressive, but Patrick says even at the top, there is always room for improvement.

“It was so uncharacteristic for our program–it’s

just something we don’t experience a lot,” Patrick says of losing to McAdory. “It was hard because soccer can sometimes be a cruel sport. We might not play our best at the most inopportune time.”

This loss emboldened the players to work harder to get back to the playoffs in the upcoming year. Patrick kept his head up and maintained his same persistence for pure performance.

“To have the ending that we had has helped build team chemistry this year and a singular focus of not letting that happen to us again,” Patrick says.

When his student-athletes returned in the fall, Patrick, more than ever, began emphasizing the rule of teamwork: teams either win together, or they lose together. No one person is the sole reason for a team’s successes or failures.

This attitude he implemented through teambuilding exercises on the field. On July 15, 2023, Patrick invited numerous Pelham soccer alumni to come play several games just for fun on the high school’s football field.

The event drew both local and out-of-town

players, from some who graduated the previous year to some who graduated more than a decade ago. Nobody kept score, and new friendships were made.

Patrick even gave some of his former players a tour of Pelham’s soccer facilities, showing his alumni just how far the program had come. When Patrick first took over as head coach, some of the older players did not have their own lockers, and

now, the soccer program has its own practice field and a portion of the athletic complex’s fieldhouse.

“Looking back, I enjoyed dedicating the time I did to this sport,” Patrick says. “That’s what makes my job worth it.”

The team also enjoyed themed games such as ‘80s night, where the players dressed up in vintage uniforms and focused on playing for fun. Patrick says before every game, he reminds his players that

26 March/April 2024

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

while they play to win, they also play to create great memories with each other.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have some outstanding studentathletes that buy in and understand that what we do matters,” Patrick says.

He credits several players such as Raul Jacobo and Matthew Chaux who helped build the team’s camaraderie and strengthen the bonds between all of the players.

Before long, the 2024 season opened, and the once downtrodden Panthers were now ready to make a comeback. During the first game of the 2024 season, Pelham shut out Fultondale, 4-0.

“That’s what makes it exciting every single year,” Patrick says. “It’s a blank canvas when the season starts, and I have the opportunity to mold a team. I have the best coaching staff in the world.”

Just five wins away from a career-high of 250, Patrick says his student-athletes continue to impress him–not just with their success on the field, but also how they carry themselves outside the sport. If anything, soccer teaches humility–the ability to accept the consequences of poor performance and the drive to level up and attain the standard of excellence needed to win.

If his team’s successes are any indication of his legacy, then Patrick’s most notable quality as a coach is his initiative to enrich the lives of his players. After all, hard work beats talent when talent gets lazy.

5 FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Dr. Lewis Brooks

Superintendent of Shelby County Schools

In December 2023, Shelby County Schools earned an ‘A,’ specifically a score of 90, on the state report card. The district score is composed of individual school’s scores on student achievement, academic growth, chronic absenteeism and college and career readiness. Here, Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks offers his gratitude for the students, parents, teachers and administration who made this grade possible.

Shelby County Schools recently received an ‘A’ on the state report card. To whom do you attribute the school system’s progress, having improved from a ‘B+’ rating last year?

Our goal every year is to be the best school district. We put forth the effort to become better. I’m really proud of everyone for their hard work and their efforts to make Shelby County Schools an instructional shining star for our community. It’s certainly an effort by everyone in our school district.

What tactics did teachers employ in the classroom to improve academic growth?

One thing we were able to accomplish this year was our continued emphasis on assessments. These assessments played a crucial role in analyzing the standards students might have been missing and guiding us on how to address those gaps instructionally. I believe these played an instrumental role in progress monitoring and were pivotal to our continuous

improvement efforts.

How were the school system’s parents, students and/or administrative leaders more hands-on in earning this grade this year than in years past?

We host continuous school improvement meetings, involving school leadership teams and parents to discuss areas for focus and growth. We also engage with our students to assess what is important to them in the learning process. Our district emphasis is on service, care and trust, and I hope that we have exemplified these aspects significantly within our educational communities. Everyone in our district is deeply committed to the best interests of our students. Through parental involvement and attention to students’ needs, we will continue to move forward.

What is your favorite part about being the superintendent of Shelby County Schools?

I’ve developed a video podcast called,

“One on One with Dr. Brooks,” which provides me with the opportunity to engage with students, discussing their interests and exceptional talents. Over the past three years, I have been truly impressed by the students I’ve had the opportunity to converse with and their remarkable achievements. Reflecting on those conversations, I feel a deep sense of pride. In addition, we have a fifth-grade student who came to our district as a nonverbal first-grader. Witnessing him sing with confidence in front of hundreds of people at a choir concert was unforgettable. Experiences like this underscore the importance of the work we do.

What would you like our readers to know about Shelby County Schools?

Shelby County Schools is a place that is defined by family and a strong commitment to teaching and learning. Our focus is to provide students with the greatest opportunities for their futures, working together to ensure what is best for them.

FOOD DRINK&

ONLY AT OZAN

Ozan Vineyard’s Shelby County-inspired flavor profiles pay tribute to the region’s Southern authenticity.

NNestled in the Appalachian foothills in the heart of Calera rests Ozan Vineyard, Winery and Spirits. Although the off season’s crops now seem barren, the five-acre vineyard has successfully weathered another tumultuous winter season–and springtime is now here.

During the months that follow, this picturesque patch of heaven will transform into its own Garden of Eden, sporting luscious juniper foliage as far as the eye can see. Rows and rows of norton and muscadine grape crops soon will sprout, harvesting August through September.

Spring not only bears idyllic landscapes, but it also brings rising temperatures–ushering visitors in by the thousands. Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum’s Calera and Shelby Train, too, returns as

the season unfolds, offering scenic train rides along the Ozan wine trail.

Strolling inside the winery, the Tuscan setting transports one to the Italian countryside–its rustic atmosphere perfectly complementing the tasting experience. The intimate menu–hand-selected by chief sommeliers–sports 12 different wines, seven different spirits and a lovely variety of tapas and finger foods–all made in-house.

Whether one chooses to dine indoors in the oak room or out on the patio, he is served cheerful salutations along with every beverage, helping him to feel welcome and at ease in such an inviting presence. This wholesome atmosphere is exactly how owner Burt Patrick extends his invitation for wine and spirit enthusiasts–and those willing to

30 March/April 2024

just try something new–at the start of another wonderful season at Ozan.

“I’ve been all over Europe, Asia, Latin America–that’s when I discovered that I could remember flavors and reverse design such that I had tasted,” Burt says.

Burt, a Thompson High School and Auburn University graduate, returned to his Shelby County roots after spending 30 years working in Atlanta for companies such as Georgia Pacific. His experience as a mechanical engineer took him all over the globe, helping design process improvements for factories.

It was during this time that he also received his master’s of business administration from Emory

University, which aided him in assuming ownership and managing the family business years later.

“We started making wine here almost 20 years ago,” Burt says. “I became free to pursue some personal ventures, and my dad and I worked together to plant a lot of vines [on the family property] and build the initial building.”

Ozan’s property has been in Burt’s family since 1990. While he and his father began by planting grape vines, they never intended to grow their hobby into the flourishing business it is today.

At the time, Alabama patrons could only make wine (not liquor or beer). They were also limited to making no more than five gallons of wine a year.

“In Georgia where I lived, you could make up to

32 March/April 2024

the federal limit (200 gallons),” Burt says. “I took grapes from over here to Atlanta and made the wine in my garage. The first wine I made was a blackberry wine, but that was not for sale.”

Opportunities began presenting themselves, and Burt took a chance and opened Ozan’s tasting room–the business’ first building–in 2005, complete with the state’s first barrel room. As the second-ever winery in Shelby County, Ozan initially did not offer muscadine wine.

Instead, the business focused on diversifying its selections, offering original, “Alabama dry” wines–flavor profiles Burt drafted to mimic California-dry wines while also matching the palates of central Alabama. Over the years, Ozan started attracting

visitors from across the country–some even from overseas–allowing the winery to expand.

In 2009, Ozan partnered with Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum to allow its guests to take a train ride through the Shelby County countryside, starting at the Ozan train stop on Burt’s family’s property. Now, the Calera and Shelby train runs twice on Saturday from March-November each season.

“It gives such a unique experience in Alabama that you cannot get anywhere else,” Sylvie Torres, Ozan Vineyard, Winery and Spirits’ event coordinator says. “We have people come from all over to experience the train ride.”

Ozan’s popularity soon spread like wildfire,

SOMMELIER’S RECOMMENDATIONS

These recommendations and more can be found at ozanwine.com/ourwines.

TALL PATCH SAUVIGNON BLANC

A refreshing and richly bodied food-versatile white best paired with simply grilled fish, chicken or vegetable skewers.

CHILTON COUNTY PEACH

One-hundred percent Alabama Chilton County peaches are utilized for this “Southern” wine, yielding a semi-sweet, fruit-forward flavor profile.

BLUEBERRY PORT STYLE

This wine boasts one-half-pound of blueberries (that are aged and finished in a port-styled wine) in every bottle.

TALL PATCH PINOT NOIR

With aromas of spice, cherries, strawberries and vanilla, as well as hints of fruit flavors, this wine is recommended to serve with roasted or grilled chicken.

TALL PATCH MERLOT

This fruit-forward red wine offers a rich taste and decadence. Ozan recommends serving it with Italian-inspired dishes.

enabling Burt to expand yet again in 2012 by adding on the oak room and Yella Hound Distillery. The business makes all of its spirits on-site and barrel-ages them, and according to Burt, Yella Hound Distillery was the first in Shelby County to utilize this barrel-aging technique.

Patrons can now purchase Yella Hound Distillery spirits at stores throughout Alabama if they are not local to Calera.

In August 2016 at the second annual Alabama Commercial Wine Competition, Alabama Wine Inc. awarded Ozan four gold medals–status indicating a score of 17 or higher on a 20-point scale–for its norton, peach, shelby blanc and magenta wines. It also received a silver medal for its blueberry wine.

While those were just some of the first awards Ozan would receive, the business now boasts numerous awards for its wines and spirits, including several gold medals from the Finger Lakes International Wine and Spirits Competitions over the years.

The shelby blanc muscadine wine, a Finger Lakes “gold-rated” wine, is one of Ozan’s top-sellers and Sylvie’s favorite wine, too. Made from carlos muscadines, this wine is “delightfully sweet” and serves to be a great midsummer’s night beverage.

Dubbed “the best wine of all nations,” the norton red was rated the 2015 Commissioner’s Cup Best Alabama Wine. Its black cherry flavor profiles yield a rich aroma and dry finish.

Another Ozan original flavor–the cuvee rouge–is a smooth blend of sangiovese, merlot and cabernet sauvignon that creates a mild, tannic taste with hints of berry. Sylvie recommends pairing this selection with any of the charcuterie platters or the margarita pizza on the menu for a delectable lunch.

Those enjoying dessert wines will love the prickly pear cactus–

whose twinge of melon and cotton candy yield both an eclectic taste and color. When enjoyed alone or as a cocktail mixer, the prickly pear never disappoints.

“We just rotated in our cabernet sauvignon and shelby rouge–our red muscadine,” Sylvie says. “It’s brand new. It hasn’t been released yet.”

Above all, the founder’s cut apple, which is aged in American white oak bourbon barrels, is Ozan’s best-selling wine. An apple dessert wine, this flavor profile flaunts toasted vanilla flavors and rich, golden hues that delight most all who sample it.

All of these tastes are more both newcomers and longtime customers can look forward to on Ozan’s newly designed menu, including the newly added granita wine slushies. The business will also be introducing tapas tastings on Friday nights from 4-7 p.m. throughout the season.

“We’re quiet and quaint,” Sylvie says. “When you want to relax, this is the place to go. You’re out here in the middle of the woods sitting at a vineyard that feels like you’re in Italy. You don’t get that experience from anywhere else from a winery in Alabama. With so many activities, it’s a well-rounded experience for whatever you want.”

5 FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Torre DeVito

Co-owner of Buck Creek Coffee and Smoothies

Husband-and-wife duo Torre and Karen DeVito first met in a coffee house nearly 40 years ago. In 2019, the DeVitos purchased the former Kai’s Koffee space and transformed it into Buck Creek Coffee and Smoothies. They say that together, building their business has been a labor of love. Here, Torre gives an insider scoop on the business’s founding, menu items and appreciation for the community’s support.

Tell our readers about the founding of Buck Creek Coffee and Smoothies.

In 2019 when Kai’s Koffee closed, my wife, Karen DeVito, envisioned a cozy haven for Alabaster, Pelham and Helena. She told me about it, and we prayed about it. Then, Karen swiftly turned the opportunity into reality. She had all her licenses and a lease, and we purchased Kai’s Koffee’s equipment within seven business days. I had recently started the Buck Creek Poets and Writers Group, so we picked Buck Creek Coffee as our name. On the morning that we opened, my Bible reading was Psalm 42:1 which can be paraphrased to say, “As the buck thirsts for the clear running creek, so my heart thirsts for you, oh Lord.” We consider this a strong confirmation of our choice.

What on the menu makes this business stand out from other similar ones in the area?

We have some unique signature drinks such as the Bama Brule and the Tiger Dulce. Folks also love our hot ham and cheese on a flaky, buttery croissant or our

chicken salad with cran-raisins and pecans on an everything bagel. To tell you the truth, what sets Buck Creek apart from other coffee houses in the area is Karen. She has a heart for this community and other entrepreneurs, and our guests are not customers to her–they are all neighbors and friends. The rest of our Buck Creek family picks that up and emulates it. That’s why we say, “At Buck Creek Coffee, you are more than just a name on a cup.”

What is your favorite item on the menu and why?

I’m a bit of a coffee snob, so I think my pick would be either an espresso doppio or an americano. Why? Because when our coffee hits your cup, that same coffee has been ground within the hour, roasted within the week and picked this past-growing season.

What should newcomers try first, and what is a classic, fan favorite?

I would suggest the hot honey latte that we call the “Bee Sting.” It’s not too spicy,

but the jalapeno juice gives it a nice, warm afterburn. As for the classic fan favorite, that would be the Bama Brule. It’s a mocha with white chocolate and caramel sauce. Although, our turtle creek mocha with dark chocolate and caramel sauce is a strong contender, too.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I am pretty sure Karen would say it’s the people–meeting and serving new people and developing long-term friends. My favorite part is how the business is an outlet for my creativity. However, for both Karen and myself, it is a way to give back to our community. For instance, Moore Prayer Life Church meets in our shop every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for a Bible study and every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for church.

Buck Creek Coffee and Smoothies is open

Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Sunday, 8:3010:30 a.m. It is located at 2947 Pelham Parkway. For more information or to order, visit buckcreekcoffee.square.site.

HOME STYLE&

RUSTIC CHARM

This rustic farmhouse’s design transformation yields the charming simplicity of Southern-style living.

SSouthern American homes exemplify the warming nature of the region’s hospitality–a hallmark both physically present in conversation and visible in design. Steve and Amy Castleman’s Meadow Brook home is a charming manifestation of such an inviting home presence.

After 37 years of joyful union, raising three children and welcoming new grandchildren into the family, the Castlemans decided to renovate their loved-on home, giving it an upscale yet unpretentious new look. They entrusted their dear friend, Darrell Hughes, with the task.

Darrell, who studied civil engineering at Mississippi State University, founded his business, D.F. Hughes Construction, in 1995. His expertise working in the commercial construction field helped expand the design-build concept to residential renovation in Birmingham.

Along with D.F. Hughes’ interior designer, Nicole Shultz, and project supervisor, Johnny Lieske, Darrell worked one-on-one with the Castlemans, from start-to-finish. Trusting they were working with the right designer and builder was just the start. The D.F. Hughes team then spent the first couple months drawing out plans.

The team began with the kitchen–the home’s

largest renovation–by removing a load-bearing partition wall separating the kitchen and dining room. Structural support was added by installing an LVL beam to carry the load of the second floor above.

The beam would eventually be finished out by seamlessly wrapping the three exposed sides in rustic, reclaimed wood from Evolutia to mimic a large, vintage ceiling joist that added another layer of warmth and visual stability.

The D.F. Hughes team then gutted the rest of the kitchen down to the subfloor to prepare for the new layout. Utilizing new cabinetry, quartz countertops, pendant lighting and other accents, the home took on a cozy, spacious feel. The team also redesigned and built up the fireplace, powder room, stairwell, upstairs landing, master bedroom and bathroom.

While nearly every room in the Castlemans’ house has been remodeled, one still feels welcome and comfortable, as if the home had always been this way. This calming atmosphere that D.F. Hughes was able to capture, they say, is the best, “silent” design they strive to foster for all those they welcome in.

Pictured from left-to-right from top-to-bottom are Darrell Hughes, Nicole Shultz and Johnny Lieske with Amy and Steve Castleman.

The Kitchen

Nicole selected a warm white cabinet color called Divinity from Wellborn Cabinets for the perimeter and a warm gray cabinet color called Willow for the island—sourced from Creative Cabinets and Design. Sereno Gold quartz countertops from Alabama Stone Works paired perfectly with these light, warm hues. She juxtaposed the kitchen’s sleek design with cast iron pendant lights from Mayer Lighting to calm down the formality and make a more approachable space.

To really capture a more rustic look, Nicole chose a simplistic brick-look tile for the kitchen backsplash.

ShelbyLiving.com 41

The Dining Room

Family is the central focus of the Castlemans’ home, so provisions were made to ensure ample space for the beloved dining room furniture. The rustic walnut table and buffet are custom-designed by Table Top Dan, and the charcoal velvet dining room chairs are from Urban Home Market.

42 March/April 2024

The Living Room

Amy hand-selected each piece of furniture, paired with Earth-tone accents and layered textiles such as the throw pillows and oriental rug.

The Fireplace

A beautiful focal point, the fireplace’s renovation is one of the most interesting of the house’s remodel. It originally sported pink tile and sat wedged between two custom-built bookshelves that were later torn out and replaced with the same brick tile from the kitchen’s backsplash. The new design flaunts a board and batten pattern above a custom hemlock mantle for a refined, rustic appeal.

ShelbyLiving.com 43
This gorgeous piece is a family heirloom.

The Powder Room

The D.F. Hughes team incorporated vertical shiplap, which they painted a soft, medium gray hue, on the walls so as to direct one’s attention up and not out–diverting the focus away from the square footage and toward the gold-accented mirror and light fixture illuminating the room.

Strolling Inside

The exterior cottage appearance of the home is matched by the interior’s charm, which is evident through the soft, architectural features such as the curved arches connecting the adjoining foyer and kitchen.

44 March/April 2024

The Master Bedroom

New Mohawk RevWood flooring was laid throughout the main level for warm cohesiveness and ease of maintenance. The flooring dramatically changed the feel of the master bedroom, yet allowed the existing furniture to be slightly rearranged to capture a restful environment for a good night’s sleep.

The Master Bathroom

Steve jokes that their bathroom pre-renovation was as Nicole says, “the most masculine bathroom ever.” The D.F. Hughes team brightened the bathroom with an onyx-patterned, over-scaled porcelain tile on the floor flowing to a slimmer-cut tile on the back wall and shower.

The most beautiful gardens boast varieties of flowers and foliage, sporting vibrant colors and decadent aromas. Variety, what makes each flower unique, is also what makes a garden so special–similar to the strength in the diversity of communities.

Kyle Tyree is the founder of InToto Creative Arts–a Birmingham-based nonprofit that provides opportunities for artistic expression, connection and healing for people affected by social and economic hardships.

Kyle had been volunteering at Firehouse Shelter for five years when one of the shelter’s caseworkers, Dena Dickerson, approached him about creating a workforce development program to teach job skills for those in need. While he liked the idea, Kyle says he lacked the resources needed to implement the program.

He began searching for other ways to help the Firehouse Shelter’s community, and after reading “The Body Keeps the Score” by Dr. Bessel van der

Kolk, Kyle decided to try theatre therapy. Dr. van der Kolk worked with a group of veterans suffering from PTSD and had them act out the roles they were given, in order to help them express their hidden traumas.

Oftentimes, it is easier to mimic reality than it is to face it because freedom of expression allows one to make sense of such ugly truths without having to relive what hurt him most. Kyle contacted Anne Rygiel, who was then the Firehouse Shelter’s executive director, and Tam DeBolt of Terrific New Theatre, and together, the three spearheaded the mission for creating a community focused on inclusion and creative expression.

In 2020, InToto founders and volunteers began

48 March/April 2024

teaching a weekly creative writing and theaterfocused class at the Firehouse Shelter. One of the first lessons introduced was “life mapping.”

Kyle contacted the state of Alabama’s Poet Laureate Ashley M. Jones, who put him in touch with Laura Secord. Laura helped teach some of InToto’s first classes, whose emphasis was on life mapping.

“Life mapping is when we ask them to think about a period of time in their lives from the age of 9-13, which is the age we start processing trauma in a mental sense,” Kyle says. “We ask them to draw a neighborhood from that time period.”

Visibly seeing the environments in which the participants grew up proved effective in helping them identify some of the sources of their trauma. The nonprofit’s volunteers met every week at the

Firehouse Shelter in the weeks that followed, introducing new techniques for participants to embrace vulnerability and healing.

One of Kyle’s favorite success stories happened only three weeks into the program. Laura showed a video of poet Danez Smith reading some of his work as he identified as black, queer and HIV positive. After the video, an attendee, Terrance, worked up the courage to share his identity not just with the group, but also as one of the first times in his life he felt safe to do so.

“This means we’re creating a space safe enough to be vulnerable,” Kyle says. “It can be hard to feel like you’re making a difference, but when things like that happen, you realize it’s worth it.”

Four years later, InToto Creative Arts is now a thriving nonprofit, offering 10 different classes at

Kyle Tyree, (Briarwood Christian School), Lauren Nicholson (Chelsea High School) and Dani Parmar (Alabaster City Schools) never met until they all became involved, working with InToto Creative Arts. seven different partnering organizations that specifically cater to the needs of people affected by homelessness, incarceration, mental health challenges, disabilities and more. Teachers will meet participants at locations to teach these classes, helping alleviate the stress of transportation.

Living in a shelter or transient environment can be isolating. One of the first steps to finding community is to build relationships with others.

By introducing the public to the talents of many members of a more stigmatized community–who are still members of the community as a whole–the nonprofit believes this will help remove some of the stigma surrounding homelessness, incarceration and mental illness.

People are more than the stereotypes often assigned to them. It’s quite evident through tangible expressions of creativity.

“InToto helps break down walls in the Birmingham community and sees people for who they are,” Dani Parmar, InToto Creative Arts’ programming director, says. “People from very different walks of life come together to listen and learn from each other, allowing us to see our shared humanity.”

InToto’s annual “Our Voices” showcase spotlights the artwork and stories of individuals affected by such challenges, giving them the opportunity to share their talents–their poetry, music and art–with the community.

If a piece is sold, the artist receives 80-percent of the proceeds with the remainder benefiting the nonprofit’s missions.

In 2023 alone, InToto Creative Arts served more than 1,200 people–many who have gone on to receive permanent housing. The nonprofit currently

“It’s important for us to not go in there with the idea that we’re trying to rescue people,” Lauren Nicholson, vice president of InToto Creative Arts, says. “It’s about creating a safe space and a sense of respite and a time for connection, where we get to show up as humans with our own struggles and provide this space for people who often aren’t treated with dignity and respect.”

One gentleman, Abraham, attended Lauren’s movement class nearly every week. He often spoke of how much he looked forward to coming to class, saying he loved it because the community made him feel loved.

“‘Some of us have given up on life after all of the hardships, and InToto makes me feel like I might be worth something,’” Dani says, quoting Zeb.

MY SHELBY COUNTY

LAURA ROBINSON

Owner of M&M Jewelers

Sentimental Spots

Oak Mountain Amphitheatre

The Oak Mountain Amphitheatre is another favorite spot of mine–especially for outdoor concerts. I have many memories with friends at our local concert venue over the years. I remember going when there was no stadium, and we all took a blanket to sit on during concerts. The first concert I attended there was one put on by James Taylor.

Get Outdoors

Oak Mountain State Park

My sons and I love the outdoors, and Oak Mountain State Park is one of our favorite places to go and enjoy the many things offered at the park. The trails and lake are some of our favorite spots to visit. We often take our family dogs for hikes on these trails, too.

Eat Local Lloyd’s

Being in Business in Shelby County M&M Jewelers

For the past 33 years, my business, M&M Jewelers, has served the Shelby County community and beyond, thanks to the support of our loyal customers. I have three sons, Payton, Devon and Gabriel, who all came to work with me “as babies” and grew up around what I consider a family-oriented jewelry business. Whether customers need a simple watch battery, jewelry repair or an engagement ring, every customer will be treated with a smile.

Celebrating Shelby County

Helena’s Buck Creek Festival

One of my favorite yearly events in Shelby County is Helena’s Buck Creek Festival, which was held last October. My friends, family and I have enjoyed going every year for the concerts.

One Shelby County restaurant I used to love was Lloyd’s on Highway 280, which was one of my favorites for many years. One of my dear friends, Paul Craft, worked at Lloyd’s for more than 30 years. I was sad to hear they were closing. I loved their fried chicken, onion rings and slaw, too. My mom, who passed away in 2015, and I went there many times together and had fond memories there. It was her favorite restaurant as well.
