” “THE QUESTION
ON THE COVER
HHalf a decade ago I remember sitting on a fence about the inevitable “ring by spring” epidemic that seemed to plague the female senior population on campus. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I recall perusing through corridors, embarking to classes and dodging girls flashing the rocks on their fingers.
Then, I would’ve said girls should focus on their education and avoid the so-called “MRS” degree that skeptics such as myself would joke about being one attainment so many seem to pursue.
Admittedly, I am now only five years wiser and humbled to say I so enjoy being engaged because I found my “Mr. Right.”
I look back at freshman me, whose face resembled that of a pepperoni pizza and whose stress level required four mugs of joe a day, and laugh, thinking if only she knew that she, too, would fall in love at a young age.
One of my best friends Beth and I were invited to lunch by my cousin, Bobby, while we all happened to be in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We met up with Bobby and unknowingly to us several of his fraternity brothers. I sat right next to my “Mr. Right” himself, who looked completely uninterested that two Hippie Sabotage enthusiasts were helping themselves to the table’s shared cornucopia of breadsticks.
Hours soon faded as the sun retreated, and Justin, my now fiancé and father of my son, and I became inseparable. We played tic-tac-toe in the sand, drawing janky lines with our toes and trying to out-wit the other. Unfortunately, tic-tac-toe takes all of 30 seconds to play, so there’s not much room to one-up your opponent. Our conversation soon turned to politics, music tastes, our lives’ ambitions and how we each were going to make our mark in the world. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history.
Now just a few short months out from our tying the knot, I can’t help but smile at the younger version of myself, who was utterly disgusted by the idea of being entrapped by love.
Allison & Hammond
Allison walked by one of Hammond's friend's house at Auburn everyday on her way to class. Hammond was dared to ask her out, and he is so glad he did.
My message for you, readers, is that life often tricks you into thinking you’re in control. I believe in a greater power who has a sense of humorone that involves the best plans for us. To the young and hopeful reading my letter, I pray for you to find your “Mr. or Mrs. Right,” but just know that he or she may meet you when you least expect it. But, isn’t that the beauty of falling in love? Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. To that I say, love on.
Warmly,

HERE AT THE LIBRARY
The Homewood Public Library's new director Judith Wright is engaging the community through library functions.
BY ELIZABETH STURGEON
PHOTOS BY CHRIS JONES
Judith Wright finds her second home at the Homewood Public Library, where so many go to explore or find respite or community. Thor and Loki, the library’s two chinchillas, both call the library home, just like the books in the collection. Other adventures start with visits to the library and go beyond the building—to telescope discoveries, nights at the symphony, and opportunities to learn a new language and culture.
The books—plus her love for Reading Rainbow— are what drew Judith to the field, but the events and resources libraries provide beyond their literary collection are what kept her in library science, now serving as the new director of the Homewood Public Library, where she has worked on and off over the last decade. “I do love books, but what I love more is that I’m helping people,” she says. “That’s what libraries and librarians provide to your community because people always turn to us when they don’t know something.”
Judith found her first paid library job at the Homewood Public Library in 2010 and worked part-time in the children’s department. She later returned to work in circulation and then returned once again in 2014 to serve as the teen librarian and then “promised I would never leave, and I’m sticking to that,” she says.
In her last role as assistant director and now as the current director, Judith contributes to the same goal she’s always had at the library—to provide resources of all kinds to community members throughout their lives. “We always try to make lifelong library users,” she says. “People always turn to us when they don’t know something. While we might not know it, we know where to find the correct information.”
Judith saw this clearly in her role as teen librarian. “I love teenagers—they’re so weird and vulnerable and ready to change the world,” she says. Judith loved getting to know teenagers through library events and programs in her seven years in the position. “I was given the creativity to be so free with what I put on our events calendar, but it was only successful because I made connections with teenagers, and with their parents, too.”
The library plays a huge role in the community, and strong connections with teenagers built the bridge from childhood to adulthood, Judith says. Usually, trips to the library tend to dwindle into someone’s teenage years, but not without events

TOP LIBRARY PICKS
It’s no surprise that Judith is an active reader. She was averaging 220 books a year during her years as teen librarian. “We put the right book in the hands of the right reader, and you have to know your collection to do that,” she says. We asked her for her top picks at the Homewood Public Library—some books and some other favorite library resources.
Favorite Reads:
“A Sick Day for Amos McGeeby” by Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead
“Amari and the Night Brothers” by B.B. Alston
“The Poet X” by Elizabeth Acevedo
“When Women Ruled the World” by Kara Cooney
“Letters from Skye” by Jessica Blockmole

that engage teens specifically. Snakes and Snacks, a meetand-greet with Judith’s favorite reptiles, was one of her favorite teen events.
In her transition to director, her focus revolves around Homewood Public Library’s place in the community and how they can continue to serve their visitors. This often includes keeping up with the same relationships she has built throughout her time as a librarian, and other times it involves building up programs, resources and visibility. “Libraries are always evolving,” she says.
Books have always been an important part of her work, but the library is so much more—that’s something Judith always wants to emphasize in the community. One of her proudest moments in her time at the library is establishing the Homewood Public Library’s partnership with NASA. She is the only librarian in Alabama who is certified to borrow lunar and meteorite samples from NASA, making the Homewood Public Library one of only 75 libraries in the country with this access.
Judith’s work with NASA has led to a lasting partnership that has allowed many acclaimed speakers to come to the library, especially via Zoom during the pandemic. She also started the library’s telescope lending program, the first of its kind among Alabama’s libraries. “Those are really cool things to do because it shows that libraries are different from what you think, and everything we offer is free,” Judith says.
HomewoodLife.com 23 Childrens AL •org
In the little moments and major milestones of childhood, we are here for our patients and their families – helping, healing, teaching and discovering.
Outside of her space—and animal-focused accomplishments at the library, Judith says the sciences aren’t usually her niche. She is more drawn to literature, of course, and art—something she finds throughout the library from the Ellenburg Art Gallery to their watercolor classes and other art programs. Her new office has steadily filled with art, including many pieces of work from the Homewood Public Library’s annual student art show. She makes sure to buy a new piece at the event every year.
Judith has so many memories with former library director Deborah Fout, who became an integral mentor to her during her years at the library. Before her retirement, Deborah spent 37 years at the Homewood Public Library, 13 of those years as director, and oversaw so many wonderful staff members and programs to do great things for the Homewood community and beyond.
The City of Homewood, plus thousands of visitors the library receives every month, drive everything they do and often inspire the ideas behind some of the staff’s favorite programs. It’s one of the busiest libraries in the area, with 75 to 100 programs a month spanning all kinds of interests for all ages. Cooking classes, mystery theatre, sign language classes and Dungeons and Dragons nights are just a handful of programs Judith says visitors can expect from the Homewood Public Library.
“A library can only be as great as the community it supports,” Judith says. "The fact that this community values their libraries so much just shows how successful we can be.”

CEO
5 FIVE QUESTIONS FOR
Owens
of SOZO Children
BY NOELLE NEADER PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
“Sozo” is a greek word that means to save, keep safe and rescue from harm. Sozo Children, a non-profit ministry based in Birmingham, seeks to live out this definition by meeting the physical and spiritual needs of at-risk children in Uganda. Every year, Sozo hosts a fundraising gala entitled “Evening of Dreams” to promote fellowship with their sponsors and raise awareness for their mission. Here, Suzanne Owens, the CEO of Sozo, sheds light on Sozo’s values.
What values lie at the heart of Sozo’s ministry?
At its heart, Sozo is about service to others. We believe we are able to serve God by serving others. Building homes for at-risk children wasn’t something we set out to do initially. We were just trying to meet the needs of some children in a crisis and grew from there. We don’t get to pick where we are called. It’s our job to say yes. We’re always looking for the next opportunity to share with others, whether it is in Uganda or here in Alabama.
What projected dreams and goals does Sozo have for 2023, and in what ways could the fundraiser bring those to life?
In 2023, we want to increase our mission trips to Uganda, increase our number of
child sponsorships and launch a campaign to build a school and medical center on our land in Uganda. We also have some projects we want to launch domestically which will help us sustain our work with new streams of revenue. The fundraiser helps generate funds for existing needs while allowing us to begin preparing for these future projects. The number of children in our care is always increasing. It’s sad because that means there is a child in an extreme situation, but it is a blessing to be available to them and meet their needs. Our fundraisers help us gain donations for our operations and sponsorships for specific children. We provide care for each of our children all the way through college if they remain in school to earn a degree. We also provide private education in primary school, healthcare, housing and a care plan, including nutritional care and counseling for each child.
What type of fundraising occurs at the gala, and how can attendees feel connected through giving?
The gala includes corporate and individual sponsors who underwrite expenses by buying tables for guests at the dinner. The gala also includes a live auction and a silent auction and, of course, opportunities to sponsor a child monthly. Each sponsorship costs only $35 per month which is a little more than a dollar a day, and each child can
have 12 sponsorships, or shares, to cover their living costs.
What has been one of the most memorable outcomes of a fundraising gala?
They are all memorable events for us. It’s a great time to reflect on the past and look to the future with our friends and family who support us. Over the years, we have seen what started as a modest effort to help a small group of children in need grow into a company that employs more than 50 people and cares for hundreds more each year. When we were able to detail our plans to build new homes on our own land in Uganda, that was an exciting time for us as a ministry, and the gala helped us make that dream a reality. We call our dinners ‘An Evening of Dreams’ for a reason. It’s where we all come together and dream of a better world for all of us, and that begins by equipping the children of Uganda to be better leaders for Jesus to build a better future for themselves and the world around them. The stats there are hard to grasp sometimes. In a country of roughly 48 million people, almost 60 percent of the population is under the age of 15. Between eight and 10 million of those are considered vulnerable, and a majority of children live in a home with a caregiver who is not their parent. By equipping as many children as we can, through faith and service, we hope to change that dynamic for the next generation of children in Uganda.
What do you hope that attendees take away once the night has ended?
Whether they have been supporters from day one or for one day, we want people to know they can change lives by getting involved. Whether they are child sponsors or regular donors, we want them to see the impact they are having. This year, for the first time ever, we had our Sozo Children’s Choir here on tour during the gala, and they were able to attend and meet many of their supporters for the first time. They are only 12 of the 148 children in our care, but we want them to go home after the tour, knowing that they are loved and their lives matter.

The Homewood We Know
By Brenda Ladun
A look at Homewood's history unfolding into the community residents know and love today.
Photos by James and Rachel Culver
Class and history are the heartbeat of the Hollywood section of Homewood. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
Nestled on the East side of Homewood, Bonita Drive draws your eyes to the Spanish-style white stucco homes capped with orange tile roofs, while Tudor-style homes are sprinkled in.
The pristine lawns and flowering foliage are as eye catching as the architecture itself.
Those shopping for homes will wait for an opportunity to snap up one of these historic homes, while many of those living there own some of the Birmingham-metro area’s most historical homes.
On Bonita Drive, you will find the connective tissue of the neighborhood is the love of history and community. It’s magnificent with each house boasting its own individual character and charm. Some love it for the look, and others love it for the history.
Many love the area for both aspects.
Bill Ballard has been a longtime homeowner on Bonita Drive.
He’s owned his house for the better part of 16 years and says the convenience and charm attracted him to it. The rich history and unique architecture also are reasons he fell in love with the street.
“It makes me feel like I am a part of history, and I have a responsibility to preserve it,” Bill says. “People who buy these historic homes, they never really own them. They are caretakers passing through an important part of our history.”
His home was built by J.F. Day, who established a successful, high-end window company still operating in Birmingham.
If you use your imagination to listen beyond the fastpaced sounds of the present-day hustle and bustle, which includes traffic rushing by on U.S. 280, you can almost hear the echoes of a time gone by.
The early beginning of what we know as Homewood today started in the early 1920s.
At that time, the sounds of hammers pounding nails into wood and construction filled the air. It was the sound of a new beginning and hope. The homes were built with the finest quality of hardwood floors, bricks and stucco to withstand the next hundred years.
Part of the fresh new builds included something rarely used today—honeycomb brick. It was a staple of building many homes in Hollywood and what makes the district so special today.
HomewoodLife.com 29 l a n e p a r k e & o n l i n e
Cobbs Allen is here to protect you on your biggest days. We have plans designed to protect against a variety of risks, such as:
Designed to keep the home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, it is a brick with holes inside each brick that looks like an actual honeycomb.
The real stucco on the exterior of many homes on Bonita Drive only adds to the charm of the area. With loving care from the homeowners, the houses have not only survived the test of time, but have also thrived in doing so.
Bonita Drive is a revered community where homeowners consider their abodes the jewels of Homewood.
Location, location, location—that is one of the big drawing cards for Homewood and especially the Hollywood portion of the city. It is only 10 minutes from Birmingham and 10 minutes to the edge of Hoover.
The convenience of being able to walk to nearby restaurants on a warm summer night also reminds residents of a time past.
Most of these historic homes have been renovated to restore and improve on the charm of the Spanish-style stucco homes or the English Tudors.
The Hollywood Country Club established in 1926 consisted of a pool and a dinner club. There were plans for a golf course surrounding it that never came to fruition, so the pool became a centerpiece for the community.
With costs generally under $1,000, protecting from the unthinkable is a vital task for your "to-do" list
The sounds of splashing and children laughing at the country club swimming pool were the start of a pleasant community.
For 40 cents a day, children who were not members could swim.
Then, there was the music. The jazz music of the famous Cab Calloway rising from the stage in front of the glass dance floor was a true gem.
The club evolved through the 1970s until it gave up the ghost declining into disrepair and finally sold to make way for the brick and mortar Courtyard Marriott, which stands

on the grounds today, replacing the elegant Flemish Modern-style Hollywood Country Club building which once graced the community.
The club was part of the vision of Clyde Nelson, a developer who profited from the flight of Birmingham residents during the cholera outbreak of 1873.
Many Birmingham residents became very ill and many died. That’s when there was a flight of residents from the city to the heavily-wooded area now known as Homewood.
Afraid of the sickness in Birmingham water, hundreds fled from the city for a fresh start. An added bonus to these grand homes is the community surrounding it.
They are within a short walk to Demetri’s BBQ, Jinsei or perhaps just a burger at Jack's.
Bonita Drive is also within walking distance to quaint and posh shops and gourmet restaurants in Mountain Brook as well as the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the Birmingham Zoo.
Whether it’s the beautiful, majestic look of the homes on Bonita Drive, the chance to be a part of history or the convenient location, more home buyers are snapping up an opportunity to be a part of the historic Hollywood area along Bonita Drive.

Spring Retreats
Lake, Mountains, Beach

There is nothing like a big event – a wedding, a reunion, an anniversary - to inspire a fun getaway.
This spring, we are celebrating weddings and anniversaries, graduations and milestones achieved. And if we are honest, there is so much work that goes into planning these big events. It can feel like we’ve run a race when we finally get here. After all, what mother-of-the-bride hasn’t wished for her own weeklong-honeymoon-style getaway after helping to execute her daughter’s dream wedding? And to be sure, before we even get to the big celebrations, there are lots of smaller ones along the way: bridesmaids trips, groomsmen getaways, planning excursions and site visits for parties. We’ve selected three of our favorite locations which might just fit the bill for anything you have planned this spring. With destinations at the lake, the beach and in the mountains, there is a little something for everyone. Of course, you might just have to hit all three. They’re all very special!

A Little Something for Everyone
An Active Retreat
Just a short drive on I-20 from Birmingham, Reynolds Lake Oconee has been drawing Magic City visitors for years. Long known for its exceptional golf program and stunning setting on Lake Oconee, this Ritz-Carlton resort has something for everyone. The five-story property has rooms and suites of various sizes to accommodate a variety of guests, but larger parties may choose to book one of the six separate cottages that front the lake itself. Imagine settling in with your best girlfriends for a weekend of wedding planning and spa visits. For those who live, eat and breathe the pursuit of that small, white ball, there are four other suites which overlook The Oconee Golf Course, one of five worldclass courses on property.
Lake: Reynolds Lake Oconee Greensboro, Georgia
Ready, Aim, Shoot!
Beyond spa and golf, Reynolds Lake Oconee has expanded its recreational offerings to include tri-toon boat rentals, water skis, Jet Ski, paddle boarding, wakeboarding and canoe rentals. One of the more recent additions to this property is Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, which is nestled into 100-acres of pristine East Georgia countryside. Great Britain’s internationally-acclaimed shooting champion Justin Jones and his team have worked tirelessly to develop the property and make it a luxurious, world-class shooting destination. Sandy Creek features a 20-station sporting clays course, five-stand shooting range and sporting clays. Women make up the fastest-growing sector of the shooting market, so even if you’ve never picked up a 20-gauge shotgun before, we challenge you to try your hand at this sport. It is thrilling!
Fine Dining
Of course, no getaway would be complete without great food, and this is one more way Reynolds Lake Oconee shines. There are a number of on-site restaurants that can be intimate respites for two, or host a large group of revelers. Book one of the cottages, and you can have chef-driven meals brought to your own private domain and never lift a finger.

Mountaintop Escape Retreat in the Peaks
Located in the heart of Western North Carolina, The Swag is a storied property with a history of hospitality and a warm embrace of its environs. First established as the private retreat for Deener and Dan Matthews and their friends and family, The Swag is named for that part of the landscape where two mountains come together. That physical act of coming together is the foundation for what this property is all about.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Let’s start by saying this: take note of the temperature gauge on your car when you first turn onto The Swag’s driveway. As you make the 15-minute drive up the mountain, crossing the terrain on switchbacks, you can watch the temperature drop degree-by-degree. Better yet, just roll down the windows and let that fresh mountain air erase whatever cares you may have inadvertently brought along

on this getaway. We promise that by the time you arrive at the welcome reception area, your breathing will become deeper and your smile will become wider.
Next-Gen Caretakers
As only the second stewards of this property, Annie and David Colquitt – themselves long time guests at The Swag before purchasing the property – built this welcome area as a way to set the tone for what is to come.
Get Out There
Atop the mountain lies the main guest lodge where you’ll gather each afternoon for a pre-prandial cocktail or enjoy a repast with other guests. Just across the driveway of the 250-acre property is a long, seemingly endless, rustic wooden fence which is all that

separates guests from the wonder of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Pause for a moment to take in the chatter of woodland life, feel the cool and earthy breeze that comes whispering through the centuries-old growth. This may be just the setting you desire for a honeymoon or a relaxed couples retreat.
Feeling Cozy
Rooms are available in the lodge’s main Swag House, where Deener and Dan once had rooms for each of their children to come and visit. These are spacious mountaintop rooms with truly elegant amenities not often found at this altitude. One of the most coveted rooms might be the one with the large copper tub on the porch. Picture yourself taking in the moonrise, enveloped in and sipping on bubbles. Adjacent Chestnut Lodge features five other spaces while seven cabins and suites across the property provide truly intimate privacy. The Balsam Cottage is one of our personal favorites with fireplaces, a sauna, an outdoor shower and soaking tub, beckoning you after a long hike.
The Great Smokies Daytime on the mountain is your time – hours to explore the GSMNP on foot, with or without a guide, like one of the experts-in-residence who have been coming to the property for years. You may choose to amble down the lawn to one of the nooks tucked into the rhododendron-lined hillside, taking along the lunch that the kitchen made for you this morning. Or, stake your claim on a rocking chair on the porch, cracking open a new hardback, losing count of all the hummingbirds that also call The Swag home.
More To Do
The Colquitts recognized and relished the respite of The Swag, having been guests and friends of the Matthews for so many years. But, in taking the reins of ownership, they have endeavored to add even more luxury to the mountaintop: adding a spa, fitness center, wine and cocktail tastings, as well as a soaking pool with breathtaking views of the area. Tours of the garden on site are rounded out with cocktail-crafting classes where guests are invited to try their hand at mixology. Stave puzzles have always been standard fireside entertainment here and continue to be a cherished afternoon activity. theswag.com

A Hotel with a Romantic Past
Sugar White Sands
For some, there is no getaway like a beach getaway. We get that. For those folks, we suggest something different than your typical 30-A trip: The Hotel Don CeSar in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also known as The Pink Palace, this grand hotel sits majestically on the sugar-white sands of St. Pete, just a short drive from the Tampa airport.
Pink Palace History
The Don (as it is also known) enjoys a rich romantic past that is honored still today. Real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe built the resort in the height of the Great Gatsby era of 1928, as a tribute to the love of his life. The property attracted a number of notable guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself and was quite the destination in its heyday before Rowe’s untimely death in 1940. Two years later, the United States Army purchased the property and used it as a place for returning WWII injured airmen to convalesce. After that, the hotel languished for several years before a group of investors lovingly brought it back to life.
Beach: Hotel Don CeSar
St. Petersburg, Florida
Revelers Welcomed
Now a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America, much of the era’s panache can be felt in every corner of the hotel – from the vaulted ceilings of the marble-clad lobby to the wide breezeways to the guest rooms that feel very nautical in detail. There are grand ballrooms for large parties and sweeping vistas that recall that bygone era of grandeur. The hotel hosts weddings year-round where the Pink Palace feels like a de facto member of the party. While the hotel’s spa and idyllic beach setting are enough to keep guests on property, it would be a shame to miss some of the other fun things to do in the area.
Dreamland
In fact, take a page from New York Times’ best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, who set his most recent romantic novel, Dreamland, at the Don CeSar, a site he visits yearly and has great affection for. The main characters of the novel, Morgan and Colby, engage all of St. Pete as the backdrop to their own love story – kayaking in clear-bottomed boats amongst the mangroves and spending stretches of time at the acclaimed Salvador Dali museum – which might just inspire a little romance of your own. doncesar.com

Birmingham local Susan Milner of Susan Milner Design sheds light on picking the perfect bouquets for every wedding season.
By Anna Grace Moore | Photos by AL Weddings, Blair Ramsey & Eleanor Stenner Photography
After 35 years in the interior design industry and 12 years in the wedding florals business, Susan Milner has seen it all. The beautiful, the intricate and the innately unique are all words that come to mind when describing the bouquets she creates for a bride’s big day.
Susan Milner Design was born through Susan’s volunteer work, planning events and decorating florals for her childrens’ school events such as proms and dinner banquets. A few of the other moms noticed her talent and asked her if she’d consider arranging florals for their own events, including their childrens’ weddings. What started as a side hustle is now one of Birmingham’s premier wedding floral businesses, which actually is but a branch of her own interior design company.
“Doing floral design was a natural extension of my interior design career,” Susan says. “A lot of the same mental tools are used. You need to understand how to work with color, proportions, scale. Those are universal design tools that apply to both fields.”
Susan began designing florals for two to three weddings a year, but now she does near 20 weddings or more a year.
“I have probably done 250 weddings,” Susan says with a laugh. Reflecting back on all of her brides’ nuptials, she’s quick to offer key advice.
“Brides should pick something they will love 20 years [down the road], looking at wedding pictures,” she explains. “To me, one of the biggest things is to try to stay away from trends. Classic, timeless designs are a hallmark of my work. I encourage brides to choose florals that are classic and will stand the test of time.”
One constant in Susan’s work is her dedication to helping a bride’s vision come to fruition on her wedding day. She recalls how the feeling she gets, watching a bride see her bouquet for the first time, is simply magical.
“My ultimate goal is for the bride to just be beyond thrilled with her florals,” Susan adds. “I want to exceed all expectations. I want to create florals that are beautiful, and I want to be proud to put my name on anything. Most importantly, I want the bride to be happy.”
Pure joy is a sentiment that all of Susan’s brides share. Here, Susan offers her take on seasonal florals that contribute to the “wedding bliss feeling.”
Visit susanmilnerdesign.com to start a conversation about the best florals for a bride’s big day.
“Soft, airy colors and flowy textures just says, ‘spring,’” Susan explains. “Flowers such as spring bulbs, daffodils, hyacinth and foxglove are all just beautiful hallmarks of spring.” For this season, Susan recommends brides choose soft pastels such as pinks and whites to create a subtle, timeless design in their bouquets.

summer florals
“Peonies are very summery,” Susan says. “You can go one of two ways in summer. You can go with soft pastels with cool whites, ivories and greenery. Or, you can go on the other end of the spectrum and do really hot, vibrant colors like orange and purple.” Whatever a bride chooses, Susan adds that the bouquet should match the aura of the dress. A more traditional silhouette, she believes, should pair with a more modest bouquet shape.

flofallrals
“Dahlias are the number one fall flowers that come to mind. They’re only available mid-to-late summer and in the fall. I also use ranunculus throughout the year. They’re fitting for fall,” Susan says. “To me, the richer colors and bringing in natural elements like berries, seed pods and fall greenery are the best inspiration for a fall bouquet.”

winter florals
As for winter florals, Susan recommends either going with a “cool-white aesthetic” or playing on the season’s colors, such as red and green for Christmas or blue and white for Hanukkah. “I love bringing in wintery greens like pines and cedars,” Susan adds. “The scent can transport you to another place.”

Mary Glenn McElveen’s “how to look book” for dressing your
By Anna Grace Moore
Photos by Maddie Moore Photo
Growing up in Mountain Brook, Mary Glenn McElveen woke up every morning ready to conquer the day in style. From strutting her high school’s hallways to making statements at social activities, Mary Glenn’s time spent curating her own style has contributed to her reputation as a stylist and tastemaker in her hometown.
“I remember as a little girl playing dress up,” she explains. “It was my creative outlet. Honestly, that hasn’t stopped in my life. Now, everyday style really is a part of who I am today. I feel like this is where I thrive.”
Being fashion forward, she says, has evolved in meaning to her over time. Now, it’s about accentuating her clients’ confidence by helping them feel the most like themselves in what they wear. Why? Because when one feels like a more “elevated” version of herself, she stands a little taller, walks more confidently and acts with purpose.
After graduating from Mountain Brook High School, Mary Glenn attended the University of Alabama, eventually earning a degree in marketing. Through her classes she learned the importance of selling her talents, whether this was through social media or the way she presented herself in fashion and design. This prompted her to spend the next few years styling houses and curating her taste inside the closet and throughout the home.
Around this time, girls that Mary Glenn had been helping style since they were high schoolers started getting engaged and needing Mary Glenn’s help for life’s more memorable moments. This sparked the realization that her clients and community had styling needs that she could meet more full-time.
“With my background being in the design world, [I formed] a lot of client-based relationships,” she says. “I’ve always been able to connect with people, really understanding their needs.”
This simple request soon snowballed into what is now Mary Glenn’s own business, M.G. Style. Boasting more than 35,000 Instagram followers, M.G. Style is one of Birmingham and the greater area’s premier styling companies. Mary Glenn focuses on dressing clients for travels, galas, everyday “looks” and more.
Here, with wedding fever in the air, Mary Glenn offers her expertise in how to dress a bride for her anticipated wedding festivities.

Bachelorette Trip
Mary Glenn loves the movement of the skirt and the sweater together because it creates a very relaxed look. The outfit isn’t boring, but it isn’t too “loud,” either. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.
Adding color for a bachelorette trip is really fun. Brides are already going to be wearing white for all of their other events, so this is something that can be restyled for a honeymoon. Sourced locally from Effie’s.
The Little, Black Dress
This faux leather dress Mary Glenn has already worn to an office party, a dinner and more. The fabric and kneelength hem makes this dress versatile, which adds for another non-white option to add to a bride’s closet. This style is great for grabbing drinks with friends, perusing wedding venues, shopping for bridesmaid gifts and other wedding excursions. It is a “day to night” kind of dress. Sourced locally from Tulipano Boutique.

Engagement Party
The off-the-shoulder silhouette and flared pants complement one another well. The outfit is not as formal but still classy and elegant enough for an upscale evening. The neckline alludes to a sophisticated nature about the outfit; whereas, the pants add more of a casual flair. Fun fact: Mary Glenn actually helped design this handbag which is named, the “M.G.” The bag is from a collaboration with the handbag line, J. LOWERY. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.
Bridesmaids’ Luncheon
Rehearsal Dinner
This modest, cute go-to outfit is perfect for a light lunch with the gals to celebrate a bride’s nuptials. The light material and length is appropriate for the warmer seasons, which is significant, considering the events in which this dress can be reworn. Think church services, graduations, Mother’s Day and other events. Sourced locally from Effie’s.
This elevated but simple outfit is great for the bride’s shining moment, walking down the aisle for the first time during the rehearsal. This glam also pairs nicely for dinner afterwards as it is a little understated but still contributes to the “wow” moment guests feel, gazing at the bride’s beauty. Sourced locally from Effie’s.

Bling to Match the Ring
Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but for each seasonal wedding, different gems and styles can spruce up a girl’s ensemble, too. Pearls make for a classic, timeless look. Fun colors and dangle earrings are perfect for a ritzy night out or a reception as well. Sourced locally from Heezie’s, Effie’s and Tulipano.

The Reception Look
This cocktail dress is for the bride’s moment. Adding details like sparkles or a bow really makes the outfit fun and festive, which is perfect for a reception or as an exit dress. This dress in particular has a detachable bow in the back. It also has a v-neckline with a removable sequin bandeau. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.

Bridesmaid Gifts
Your bridesmaids stand by you on one of the most important days of your life. Here’s a guide as to how to thank them.
BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY MADDIE SULLIVAN PHOTO
The perfect bridesmaid gift is one with sentimental value. The best are often those with a hand-written note, detailing how thankful the bride is for the commitment her bridesmaids made to achieve the bride’s wedding dreams.
If you’re a bride and don’t know where to start, consider putting your thoughts on paper first. Express your love and thankfulness to each bridesmaid individually. No one likes a generic note. Next, think of the aesthetic of your wedding. Are you going for shabby-chic or more of a classic, timeless vibe? Your gifts will want to reflect your desired aesthetic and complement the color palette and theme you choose.
Here are a few things brides should consider when creating their bridesmaid gifts.
DON’T FORGET THE WINE!
If you or your bridesmaids prefer non-alcoholic beverages, sodas, teas and lemonade make the perfect substitute. Small wine bottles with bridesmaid stickers are small enough to fit in a tote or handbag but sentimental enough because the bride can pair them with a sweet note.
HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR GIFTS TO LOOK?
One of the most important parts of any bridesmaid gift is the “look.” Your friends will feel honored that you asked them to be in your wedding. While the gift is a nice gesture, the pictures of the gifts last forever. The packaging, wrapping, ribbon, color scheme and trinkets inside all should match to stand out.
WHAT CAN YOU PACKAGE, GIFT AND SHIP?
Often, brides think of innately-decorated chocolates and cookies to add to their bridesmaid gifts. These are cute, but if you’re shipping your gifts especially to your out-of-town friends, you’re going to want to use non-perishable items. But, for friends near home, edible croissants with fruit or neat pastries are a sweet and inexpensive way to thank your friends who’re standing by your side.
THINK OF GIFTS THAT CAN BE REUSED IN THE FUTURE. Another great gift is one in which can be used again and again. Wedding koozies, hats and sunglasses are gifts that bridesmaids can use for the bachelorette trip! Finding ways to cut down on expenses without having to sacrifice style is important for every bridal party.
WHERE ARE YOU GIVING YOUR BRIDESMAIDS THEIR GIFTS? Location, location, location! The area that you’re gifting your bridesmaid gifts is an essential part of the friendly gesture. Some brides choose to mail them, but for those wanting an in-person feel, consider this: gift your bridesmaids their gifts at a place that you all can celebrate. A bridesmaids’ luncheon, an engagement party and even a bachelorette trip are all perfect occasions to give your gifts. A poolside retreat, for example, is a great location to give your bridesmaids something they’ll love. Everyone will be enjoying the pool party, and your bridesmaids will get something to take home, too!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Josh and I met at the University of Alabama. We were both freshmen in a leadership group together, and we were in the same small group meeting weekly. It was between him and me (and one of our groomsmen) in a competition for our small group to present at our end-ofthe-year banquet. I ended up getting selected and reached out for help on the speech. We started studying together and hanging out. Then the first Monday after spring break, March 20, 2017, we started dating.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Having our ceremony at Josh’s family’s church was such a special detail. Father Tom Ackerman, who married us, is a very close family friend. Having our reception at Vulcan was phenomenal because it incorporated a fun experience into the wedding. So many people got to go up into the tower and look at the city that we love so much. Josh and I went up to take pictures, looking out over the city at sunset. It was a moment where we were able to take everything in and be together just the two of us.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
We were intentional about having family details in our wedding. I asked the women in each of our families about their bouquets for their weddings and tried to incorporate their florals. I wore my grandmother’s wedding ring on my right hand since she had recently passed away before our engagement and bracelets from my other grandmother and great grandmother. The silver tray we used for detail pictures was also a significant family item. We had all of our siblings involved in some aspect of the wedding, too.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Our paths crossed at the University of Virginia, which brought me from Homewood, Alabama, and Will from Richmond, Virginia. Majoring in different subjects and being a year apart in age, we may have missed each other entirely if not for the University Guide Service, which is UVA’s student-run historical and admissions tour guide organization. We both joined Guides in spring 2013 and knew each other as friends. It was not until our last remaining months on UVA’s grounds that we fell in love while living as neighbors in the Academical Village–the original 1817 student rooms designed by Thomas Jefferson. After graduating and weathering a year of long-distance while I taught English in France, we now live happily together on the same continent.
THE PROPOSAL
On June 22, 2019, we returned to where our story began. Unbeknownst to me, Will had plotted with one of my best friends, who was a UVA medical student, to come up with a fake awards ceremony to get me on the lawn by sunset. Fifteen minutes before the “8 p.m. ceremony,” Will pulled out a letter to launch us into a scavenger hunt to “walk down memory lane,” back to all of the places that are special to us. Will got down on one knee and popped the question at Garden II! We celebrated with a sunset happy hour and danced on the balcony of Pavilion VII.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Our favorite moment was the private first look we shared in Garden II at the University of Virginia, where Will proposed back in 2019. Our photographer, Xiaoqi, made us close our eyes and stand back-to-back, before leaving and letting us turn to see each other all dressed up and share the personal vows we had written.

THE PROPOSAL
Ashton thought the deck in my backyard would be the perfect place for a proposal! He asked my parents and friends to decorate while we were out with some friends who were in on the surprise. The deck was beautiful with flowers, candles, pictures and a lighted “Marry Me” sign. He thought the only way to discreetly get me into the backyard was to leave the gate to the backyard open, knowing I would immediately march back there to close the gate. I was in total shock as Ashton got down on one knee. After proposing, our family and friends popped out, and we enjoyed celebrating the rest of the night. Surprising me is hard, but he pulled it off!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
My favorite moment of the ceremony was walking down the aisle with my dad. We processed to “Amazing Grace,” and while it took a minute for me to see through the tears welling up in my eyes, I was amazed at how beautiful the church was. Family friends, Angela and Linda, were so generous with their time and talents in creating a stunning altar of flower garland and tall arrangements with bright flowers. Mary Donald, a gifted florist, completed my vision with additional flowers at the church and reception. They all worked together to make my dreams come true!
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
I was very close to my grandmother and always thought she would be involved in my wedding planning. She passed away six years ago, but my mom made sure she was still a part of my special day. I was sitting down while my mom was helping me put on my shoes. I lifted my dress and saw a blue heart that was sewn into my dress. Upon closer look, I saw the touching words, “Walking with you always, Love, Nanny." My mom had the foresight to save my Nanny’s blue silk pillowcase when she passed away. My mom worked with Carolyn and Kathy from The White Room to cut out the heart and sew it on my dress. I knew my Nanny was truly walking with me.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Kyle and I met during our sophomore year of college at the University of Alabama. Our mutual friend, Caroline, introduced us to each other at an event his fraternity, Sigma Nu, was hosting. We instantly just clicked, and it really was a love at first sight moment!
THE PROPOSAL
The year 2020 was a very rough year for us. At the start of the year, Kyle suddenly lost his stepfather, John Bresnan, who was the former fire chief of Homewood. While grieving this incredible loss, we were then hit by the pandemic. It seemed as if a dark cloud was over us the entire year until Dec. 22. Kyle and I were visiting my family in Fairhope, Alabama, and that night the two of us went to my favorite place, The Grand Hotel, to watch the sunset. We were standing along the boardwalk, watching the beautiful sunset when Kyle got on one knee and proposed! He had my cousin who is a photographer there to capture the incredible moment, and all of my family members were there to congratulate us. It was the best way to end a very tough year.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Our favorite moment of the wedding was the homily that was given during the ceremony. Our minister, David Seamon, talked about all of the seasons of life that Kyle and I have been through in our lives. In the 10 years we have been together, I lost my father and Kyle lost his stepfather, we discovered strengths in our careers and we adopted three dogs together. However, the one constant through all of these seasons of life has been our love and support for each other.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
To honor Kyle’s stepfather, we had a vintage fire engine as our getaway car. I also loved all of the small family heirloom details we used. I wore strands of pearls that belonged to all of the matriarchs in my family.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met in fall 2017 at Birmingham-Southern College. We met on campus during orientation training before the incoming freshman class arrived. Owen was beginning his senior year, and I was beginning my sophomore year. Although we had many mutual friends and went to such a small college, we had never met before!
THE PROPOSAL
He had a family vacation to his grandparents’ Panama City Beach house planned in June 2021. One night we went to dinner with his grandparents and brother. After dinner I asked him to walk down to the beach, so we could take pictures at sunset. Little did I know I was setting him up for such success. His brother had slipped out to “take a phone call from work” and photographed us as we walked down the pier at the Water Sound Beach Club. It was on our walk on the pier down to the beach that Owen popped the best question of my life!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
Robert Sturdivant from Trinity United Methodist Church officiated our ceremony. A few weeks before, he asked me and Owen separately to write a few things or reasons why we loved each other. It was so special to hear what Owen had written for me and to share what I had written for him during our intimate ceremony.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
We had the Heavenly Donut truck come for a ‘late night snack.’ We used Bubbles and Brews as our bar and had them drive from the dinner area for cocktail hour up to the pavilion for the reception. I loved this because guests didn’t have to go far to get a refill!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We are a bit of a cliche story—we met at work! (I’m a nurse, and he’s a doctor). We laugh now because we think that my charge nurses were trying to set us up. Whenever Chad was working a night shift, I always had the patients right in front of where he sat. We spent many late nights talking.
THE PROPOSAL
Chad and I love to hike and spend time outside. One weekend while his mom and stepdad were in town, we went on a hike at Ruffner Mountain. When we parked Chad claimed they were already on the trail, and we were to start hiking to catch up. A mile later, we still hadn’t caught up, and Chad was being unusually quiet. I was starting to get suspicious. Then the pièce de résistance was that I could see the ring box clear as day in his pocket, but I pretended like I didn’t! We got up to the overlook, and he got down on one knee and asked!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
My favorite part during the wedding was actually the pictures! By that point, Chad and I had our first look, the nerves settled and we were excited for the wedding itself to happen! We had so much fun hanging out with our family (our siblings and cousins were the bridal party), laughing with each other and our wonderful photographers, Eric and Jamie.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
Both of the venues were absolutely beautiful. We were blessed with the most gorgeous weather. It made the flowers look exceptional, and the sunshine into both venues illuminated all the little details.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Growing up, Nat was good friends with my cousin, so we always knew of each other. But, we don’t remember exactly when we met. Fast forward to college, we both attended the University of Alabama. We would always say hello in passing, but we didn’t run into each other often. Once we got to our senior year, we started running into each other every time we went out. We’d have longer and longer conversations each time until finally we went to a date party together. We’ve been together ever since!
THE PROPOSAL
My family made plans to take a weekend trip to our mountain house in Highlands, North Carolina, the first weekend in June 2021. While there, Nat suggested we go on a hike around sunset. He was walking briskly up the trail, leaving me in the dust. When we finally reached the lookout, I was enjoying the view and catching my breath when Nat tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around, and he was down on one knee with a ring! We practically skipped down the mountain in excitement. We went back to our house where his family was waiting with mine as a surprise. It was the most perfect and unforgettable day.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
I have two favorite moments from our wedding day. The first was when the doors opened to the church for me to walk down the aisle with my dad. My dad is one of my favorite people on Earth, and I was so thankful to have him next to me during this moment. My second favorite was our first dance to Otis Redding’s song, “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” It still gives me chills every time I listen to it.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
I was lucky enough to have the best wedding planner in the business, my sister, Anna Wynn. She knew that what I cared most about was my color scheme. Since our wedding was in May, I wanted to take advantage of the bright and colorful flowers that would be in season. Our florist made all my dreams come true with the most beautiful arrangements and bouquets.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
My husband and I met during our junior year at Auburn University. I walked to class every day right by his best friend’s house. One day, Hammond and his buddies were discussing who to take to the next date party. Hammond and his friends noticed me walking by and dared Hammond to ask me. We went to the Christmas Tacky Sweater date party and have been together ever since. I am so glad I went to class that day!
THE PROPOSAL
As mentioned before, Hammond and my first meeting was the Christmas Tacky Sweater date party, and he came to pick me up on my front porch. Fast forward three years later, and we are heading to dinner with Hammond’s parents. Hammond picked me up from my apartment and told me we needed to park at my old college house and just walk to Live Oaks from there. He walked up to the front porch and hit a knee! We celebrated with our close friends and family afterwards in the house we now call home.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
One of my favorite moments of the day was getting ready in the bedroom I grew up in. It was surreal to get ready for my wedding day in the same room I had gotten ready in for kindergarten, ballet practices, putting on my cheer uniform, starting my first job and everything in between!
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
One of our favorite wedding details was Hammond’s groom’s cake. Hammond is an avid hunter, and Magic Muffins did not disappoint with the duck-hunting-inspired cake! Another one of my favorite details was no flowers in the sanctuary of Dawson. I grew up going to Dawson and have always thought the sanctuary was beautiful. I did not want to add anything that took away from the ceremony, and I wanted it to look just as it always has.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
I was home from Auburn visiting for Labor Day weekend my senior year of college when one of my friends asked if I wanted to hang out with a group of guys she knew. I said yes, and that is when I met my husband, Hank. He went to Samford for undergrad and was getting his masters at UGA, but he was in Birmingham, visiting his college friends for the weekend. We hit it off from the start and started officially dating about a month later. A year later, we got engaged!
THE PROPOSAL
Hank picked me up, and I thought we were going to The Club for my sister’s birthday lunch with my family. He led me to the overview of the city, and I was so surprised when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! Both of our families were there, and we celebrated and ate lunch together after the proposal. Hank also planned an engagement party for later that afternoon, and a bunch of my college friends flew in for it. I was so surprised!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
There were so many favorite moments that it’s hard for me to pick just one! I loved the meaningful ceremony and also “dancing the night away” at the reception. It was so special having all of our friends and family from out of town there. The band did an amazing job, and it was so fun when my family took to the stage to sing, “All I Do is Win,” because we all went to Auburn.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
The Farrell is a beautiful reception venue, and every detail was perfect. Hank and I shared a first meal together in a private room. It was special being able to look out over all the people that we love while also having a few minutes to ourselves before the reception started.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
His sister, Christa, and brother-inlaw, Jason, set us up! They have been saying for many years that we should meet, but we were reluctant. They surprised us and “set us up” at dinner and told the restaurant it was our anniversary!
THE PROPOSAL
Chris asked me at our home at Smith Lake. We were doing life, and he said he had been trying to ask me for months and didn’t want to wait any more! So, he got on one knee right there in our closet and asked me to be his wife and spend forever with him.
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
The flowers were gorgeous! It was like the garden came to life in a ballroom with chandeliers! It was an elegant and formal affair. There were many gold accents and crystals. The music and dancing went into the “weeee” hours of the night! It was truly magical. Chris and I couldn’t stop smiling. There were so many emotions leading up to this moment. We love to reminisce and look back at pictures of “our” day.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS
There are so many favorite moments, but I loved that our dads each played an important part. Our ceremony was special, as his dad (a minister) officiated it. My dad walked me down the aisle and had everyone laughing and crying during his heartfelt speech and toast.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met through mutual friends around 2015. We were both in relationships. When my long-term relationship fizzled towards the end of spring 2017, Julian and I reconnected. Coincidentally, he also got out of a relationship, and he took a chance to see if I was at work at the Homewood Library on Saturday, June 3, 2017. He apparently harbored a crush on me for years, and finally, he got the courage to re-introduce himself. Ever since then, we never looked back.
THE PROPOSAL
Julian knows that one of my biggest dreams is to visit a lavender field because they are my favorite flowers. While we were planning our 2021 summer trip to Portland, Oregon, Julian said that he was going to take me to a lavender field in Mount Hood. After two delayed flights and arriving in Portland past 1 a.m., we forced ourselves to wake up early before the fields opened because we were going to have a tour. The drive was two hours, but we made it! There was no tour, however. Julian called the company weeks ago to plan a surprise proposal. It was just me, him, the photographer and the beautiful scenery of the lavender and mountains. It was unexpected and magical!
FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT
When Julian started quoting the “Before Trilogy” movies (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight), and I quoting my favorite Haruki Murakami quote about love during our special vows.
FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL
My favorite detail was definitely dancing and singing along with all our friends and family until midnight. Our first dance was to “Luna” by the Smashing Pumpkins. Another one of my favorite details was seeing Julian and his groomsmen change from their dress shoes to their Nike Blazers which was Julian’s surprise gift to them for the reception.

Making Memories
Homewood Athletic Fields
At the little league baseball fields, my son Knox’s team won a championship against an incredible travel ball team where we were definitely the underdogs. At Waldrop Stadium, Knox broke an elementary school track record! This fall, my daughter performed as part of the first-ever Homewood Starlets Dance Team. I am so proud of my children!

Sentimental Spots
The Dance Foundation
I get really sentimental when I visit The Dance Foundation. My daughter, Scarlett, started dancing there when she was 2 years old. She is now 15 and still loves to dance. I will always be grateful for the caring and kind dance instructors that helped her develop a love for dancing. If you have a child interested in dance, The Dance Foundation is the best!
Family-Friendly Eateries
Sweet Treats
My family loves all the sweet treat-spots available in Homewood! Edgewood Creamery, Hero Donuts, Pastry Art and Edgar’s Bakery are a few of our favorites. My favorite treat would have to be the “Turtle” Baby Bite from Pastry Art.

Neighborhoods
We love the neighborhoods! We moved to Homewood in 2007, and I have always loved jogging and walking around my neighborhood. Hollywood has the hills and the beautiful historic tudors to admire. Edgewood and Mayfair have great sidewalks and easy access to shops and restaurants. We currently live in Edgewood, and I enjoy walking to work on pretty days.
Bring on the Festivities
Homewood Parades
The parades are another favorite of mine. We have the We Love Homewood Day Parade, The Homecoming Parade, The Witches Ride, The Christmas Parade and now, the Walk for a Claus. The parades make Homewood feel like an old-timey, small town, and Homewood knows how to throw a parade!
