HHalf a decade ago I remember sitting on a fence about the inevitable “ring by spring” epidemic that seemed to plague the female senior population on campus. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I recall perusing through corridors, embarking to classes and dodging girls flashing the rocks on their fingers.

Then, I would’ve said girls should focus on their education and avoid the so-called “MRS” degree that skeptics such as myself would joke about being one attainment so many seem to pursue.

Admittedly, I am now only five years wiser and humbled to say I so enjoy being engaged because I found my “Mr. Right.”

I look back at freshman me, whose face resembled that of a pepperoni pizza and whose stress level required four mugs of joe a day, and laugh, thinking if only she knew that she, too, would fall in love at a young age.

One of my best friends Beth and I were invited to lunch by my cousin, Bobby, while we all happened to be in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We met up with Bobby and unknowingly to us several of his fraternity brothers. I sat right next to my “Mr. Right” himself, who looked completely uninterested that two Hippie Sabotage enthusiasts were helping themselves to the table’s shared cornucopia of breadsticks.

Hours soon faded as the sun retreated, and Justin, my now fiancé and father of my son, and I became inseparable. We played tic-tac-toe in the sand, drawing janky lines with our toes and trying to out-wit the other. Unfortunately, tic-tac-toe takes all of 30 seconds to play, so there’s not much room to one-up your opponent. Our conversation soon turned to politics, music tastes, our lives’ ambitions and how we each were going to make our mark in the world. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history.

Now just a few short months out from our tying the knot, I can’t help but smile at the younger version of myself, who was utterly disgusted by the idea of being entrapped by love.

My message for you, readers, is that life often tricks you into thinking you’re in control. I believe in a greater power who has a sense of humor one that involves the best plans for us. To the young and hopeful reading my letter, I pray for you to find your “Mr. or Mrs. Right,” but just know that he or she may meet you when you least expect it. But, isn’t that the beauty of falling in love? Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. To that I say, love on.

A HEART OF HUMILITY

Julianne Abenoja teaches that success isn’t measured tangibly–but by the size of one’s heart.

TThe name “Julianne Abenjoa” is one of familiarity in Mountain Brook. The decorated and distinguished young woman, who is now a freshman at the College of William and Mary, has laid a foundation of success that she built through dedication and hard work.

The Mountain Brook High School alumna first heard about a scholarship program–the Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) program–through her ballet teacher, Angela Walker, a teacher at Birmingham Dance Theatre, which Julianne has called her “second home” since she was 5 years old. DYW, Julianne says, changed the trajectory of her life’s compass for the better.

“She introduced it to me as a scholarship organization for girls who are going into their senior year,” Julianne says of learning about DYW.

“It’s formatted like a pageant, but it’s really a program that’s focused on getting young women the money they need to go to school. My mom signed me up, and I was a little reluctant [at first].”

Touring colleges and applying for scholarships can feel a little overwhelming. So, once Angela explained the scholarship appeal, Julianne was all ears.

As the months waned, Julianne knew her deadlines to choose where she’d earn her future degrees were drawing near. Finally, the summer before her senior year dawned on her, and she signed up to compete in the DYW of Jefferson County competition, which was held on July 17, 2021, at John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham. To her delight, Julianne won Miss Distinguished Young Woman of Jefferson County

and $4,400 in scholarships.

“I went into it wanting to have a good time, trying to earn as much money as I could,” Julianne explains. “I ended up winning the title of Jefferson County DYW. I had no idea what a great path that would take me on. People were telling us, ‘Okay, Alabama’s program is in January. We’re going to get you ready.’ We had no idea what we were in for.”

Julianne says her favorite part about competing wasn’t actually winning so much as competing allowed her to befriend so many different young women–girls she’s had the privilege to see graduate and go to college, join sororities and more.

“I got to meet girls from other schools–people who I wouldn’t have otherwise met.”

Just mere months later, Julianne was whisked down to Montgomery in January 2022, where she competed with 45 other young women for the DYW state title.

This competition was held during a state-wide spike during the pandemic, so all of the contestants quarantined and were tested ahead of time. Despite wearing masks and competing with restrictions, “all 45 girls were able to go down there and represent their counties. We got to stay with a host family, and they were really kind. It was a really fun week. I had no idea where most of the counties in

Alabama were. I got to learn so much.”

Julianne won Miss Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama and admits the honor to represent such talented young women from across the state meant more to her than winning first place.

Julianne’s journey doesn’t stop in the state’s capital, however. From June 23-25, 2022, she and 49 other young women–representing all 50 states–

competed in the national DYW competition, of which Julianne took home the title of first runnerup and $20,000 in scholarship money.

“It was amazing. I genuinely did my best, worked hard and tried to soak it all in. By the end of the [competition], I felt that I had done that. I was proud of myself, regardless. It was really exciting to be in a room with 50 amazingly talented, super smart young women. To be named first runner-up out of all of them was super exhilarating.”

When asked how DYW changed her life, Julianne could not say enough positive things about the program. “I can’t even imagine my life without DYW because I’ve met so many wonderful people. I have learned so much. Something you learn about DYW is that it never leaves you.”

The friendships she’s made, Julianne says, will last the test of time. The near $35,000 in scholarship money she’s won, however, will go towards paying her tuition at William and Mary.

Aside from her many distinctions and awards, Julianne says she’s had to redefine what success truly means to her.

“A lot of the things I love to do are achievementoriented,” she explains. “Success isn’t necessarily a

trophy or a sum that you win. I’ve had to learn to redefine success as setting goals for myself and being able to achieve those goals. That doesn’t always mean I’m winning first place. You can’t always measure success by tangible things.”

Success, Julianne admits, should instead be measured by the size of one’s heart and the love one has for giving back to the community that has invested into her.

“My grandmother has the most servant-like heart,” Julianne says. “When my mom and dad were working, she would help raise me. She’s one of my biggest role models. I’ve always seen her servant’s heart at work in our community. Having a servant’s heart means listening to the needs of those around you–being able to be there for people through serving them.”

It’s this love of community that Julianne says she has to work on constantly–to model humility and become the best version of herself. These emotions are not ones that always come naturally, so she practices expressing herself through her love of dancing–one thing Julianne’s grandmother, especially, believes has the power to move people.

“[Dance] is my comfort. It is my creative outlet,” Julianne explains. “I really love the idea of being able to tell a story. We are actors first–dancers second. I love being able to make an audience member feel something through movement.”

It’s this exact experience that Julianne says she wants to pursue for the rest of her life; although, Julianne says she wants to major in pre-med, neuroscience, specifically. She says dancing will always be her first love, but like her grandmother, she wants to put her passion to serve other people as the focus of her career. Both dancing and medicine, she explains, are ways of evoking emotion and healing in those we call dear.

Through a firm footing in hard work and passion and a desire to evolve, Julianne will never stop becoming better than she was yesterday. She believes that her village–her parents, grandmother, DYW and more–have all played an important role in her success story.

Everyone’s story, she says, has a trajectory that points in the direction of what one is most passionate about. For Julianne, that’s giving back to Mountain Brook–the community and people who’ve helped shape her into who she is today.

Dover Drive is a quiet street that’s shaded under tall pines in the winding hills of Mountain Brook. It was this exact comfort–a family-friendly neighborhood–that drew Amber and Scott Cantrell to this 1984 house nearly a decade ago.

Before the family’s move, this house on Dover looked completely different. One could barely see the front door as the yard housed several trees, blocking a street view.

“I love a traditional-looking home,” Amber explains. “We looked for nine months before deciding on this one. It looks totally different than when it was first built.”

Amber befriended Homewood local Ragan Wesson of Ragan Wesson Interiors on Instagram, prompting the two to bond over sprucing up Amber and Scott’s humble abode.

“I told Ragan my biggest thing is that [our home] cannot be like a museum,” Amber says with a laugh. “We live here, so we don’t want anything to be so expensive or so pristine. I want it to feel homey and cozy.”

Ragan, a mom of three herself, understood the assignment. She paired the couple’s traditional cherry-wood furniture with light neutrals and pops of blue and gold for a subtle balance between new and old.

Amber recalls the remodeling as “easy and efficient.” She compares working with Ragan to working with a friend on a school project, laughing and having fun the entire time.

“She hasn’t let me down. I get very overwhelmed with fabrics and rugs. I would go buy five rugs and none of them would work. It’s been money well spent to have somebody come in and say this is what we’re going to do and have it work.”

“Ragan does a great job mixing new with old with splurge items and some budget items. That’s what drew me to her. She did a great job in here with the antique piano,” Amber says.

This vintage 1970s piano is a gorgeous statement piece that alludes to a warm, inviting nature in the room. Between the subtle glow of the beaded lights above, this piece is both visually and audibly beautiful.

These gold-framed mirrors were Southeastern Salvage finds. They give a sort of distinction to the lounge that’s fitting for hosting company.

Amber and Scott lived in a condo in Scottsdale, Arizona, before moving back to Birmingham. Amber jokes that she carried this chandelier across the country, finding a place for it in their home.

Kitchen and Dining Room

This kitchen was the most recent family project. The sink was moved underneath the window, so Amber and Scott can watch the children play outside. They also installed a new stove, countertops, cabinets and a brand new vent hood where the sink used to be.

Arthur Smith, whose work can be found at The Grand in Fairhope, Alabama, freehanded both of the Cantrells’ daughters, Emma Kate and Elizabeth, using charcoal and watercolor.

Amber’s uncle gifted these glass end tables to her and Scott as a wedding present 20 years ago. Her uncle designed custom furniture for years.

“The more layers you can bring in the better,” Ragan says. “The lamps are from Pottery Barn. You add all that with your soft textiles like pillows and blankets and rugs, and it all makes the room feel cozy and inviting.”

Local artist Shannon Harris custom-painted both of these pieces, using only a color palette made up of hues in the rug and pillows.

ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Mountain Brook resident Liz Read is fighting the national drug epidemic through her product, clearMINDnow, and putting people before profit.

While this statistic from the Alabama Department of Public Health is staggering, this number does not count those who are in active addiction and haven’t sought help.

The National Institute of Mental Health describes a substance abuse disorder as “a mental disorder that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to a person’s inability to control his use of substances such as legal or illegal drugs, alcohol or medications.”

Symptoms range from moderate to severe with

addiction being the most severe.

Substance abuse affects nearly 50 percent of all families in the United States. Roughly one in eight children under the age of 17 lives in a household where at least one parent has a substance abuse disorder.

The Impact

For families struggling with a substance abuse

More than 91,000 people in the state of Alabama are in recovery from a substance abuse disorder.

disorder, admittance and acceptance are only the beginning and far from the most complicated step in the process. A common misconception is that when someone comes home from treatment, they are “cured,” and everything will immediately be back to normal. Families affected by addiction may also believe that the person with a substance abuse disorder is the only person in the family with a problem to fix.

Liz Read will be the first to tell you that none of that is true, as she found herself in this situation. “I knew we had a raging drug problem in this country, but I didn’t have any experience with it, and I thought it was something I would never encounter,” she says. Liz discovered that her loved one was suffering, and immediately, everything she thought she knew shifted.

Liz will tell you that when you learn your loved one is suffering from a substance abuse disorder, everything in your life changes. “I was having a conversation at the kitchen table with my loved one. We knew coming out of treatment that there needed to be some level of monitoring to help in restoring trust, but it was such an uncomfortable and awkward conversation,” Liz explains.

She also discovered that while her loved one had things to work on, she also had problems of her own. “One of the most important things for us in the process was realizing that we all had our work to do. That was very humbling for me. I had to come to terms with some enabling, codependent behaviors that were a part of the problem,” she admits.

The Recovery

One of the most difficult positions for a supporter to be in after treatment is feeling like he has to police a loved one or those coming home after recovery. In conjunction with therapy, monitoring can help families begin to regain some of the trust that was lost.

“When my loved one came home from treatment, we agreed that monitoring was a tool that would be impactful for us. I began to do the research. I was determined to help my family find a way forward, but I quickly learned that the options weren’t convenient or cheap,” Liz says.

At the time, Liz’s options were having her loved one visit a lab, which is expensive and time consuming, depending on the wait time at the facility,

or at-home drug testing, which put everyone in an awkward position. Liz found herself asking, “Where is the app?” She found dozens of apps for those struggling with alcohol abuse but nothing for drug abuse.

The Idea

Liz decided that if she couldn’t find what she needed, she was going to create it. Her goal was to provide the person who was being monitored with a more dignified and humane way to drug test, while also taking the burden of monitoring off supporters.

“I went to my loved one and said, ‘What if I could find a way for you to do drug testing where the results would be shared automatically, and we didn’t have to talk about it? What if you could do it when it’s good for you, within a reasonable amount of time?’ He said he would be willing to try it because it would provide accountability and take the pressure off the relationship and allow family to just be family,” she says.

Around this time, the COVID-19 pandemic had begun and Liz’s business was quiet. This provided the perfect opportunity for her to put her heart and soul into something new.

One of Liz’s best friends pushed her to make her dream a reality and encouraged her to sign up for Alabama Launch Pad, which is the state’s most active, early-stage seed fund investor, driving

innovation and job growth through startup competitions and ongoing mentoring for Alabama entrepreneurs. She won her division and secured $50,000 in funding, propelling her idea and business from a kitchen table idea to a real, drug-monitoring solution.

The Product

ClearMINDnow’s mission is to take the drug monitoring process from an uncomfortable and embarrassing routine and turn it into an empowering tool to rebuild trust within families suffering from a substance abuse disorder. “If done correctly, drug monitoring can be a very empowering process that provides accountability, while monitoring behavioral patterns and building trust among families,” Liz says.

ClearMINDnow’s monitoring is used to reveal a behavioral pattern and answer the important questions: is the person being monitored taking the test when requested? When they test, is a substance detected? If something is detected, how often? The answers to these questions are often an indication of someone’s journey through recovery and potentially a cry for help from his supporters.

“What we want people to understand is that even if you fail by detection through our system, we are not here to punish you. It is simply a signal that more work needs to be done,” Liz explains.

Liz will be the first to tell you that monitoring isn’t the solution. It is a tool to be used in conjunction with therapy and putting in the work to get better. “You have to have great therapy, you have to do the work and the work starts when you get home. Anyone can stay well in treatment. The work starts when you get home. I want this product to be the last step down in assistance as they reintegrate,” she says. Liz will remind you that the person who is recovering isn’t the only person who should be working on himself. It takes work on the part of supporters as well.

The Program

When one signs up with clearMINDnow, he’ll receive a box with his test packet and a prompt to download the app. The testing packet is small and designed to fit discreetly in a backpack or purse, allowing him to test on the go. Monitoring is meant to work with every lifestyle, allowing consumers to monitor, rebuild trust and empower each affected individual to stay well.

With costs generally under $1,000, protecting from the unthinkable is a vital task for your "to-do" list.

Once one downloads the app and sets himself up in the system, random monitoring begins. The person being monitored will receive a text message instructing him that it is time to test. Based on the program he is enrolled in, the person being monitored will be told the window in which they must test. That window is roughly eight hours, allowing the person being monitored to get off work or out of class. ClearMINDnow uses saliva testing, and the app walks the consumer through the entire 17-minute process. Using artificial intelligence and human monitoring, the test is reviewed to ensure that the protocols were followed correctly and that the proper person is the one testing. The results are uploaded to the cloud, and loved ones are notified within 20 to 30 minutes of the results.

ClearMINDnow is growing. The team is working with treatment centers and therapists to help provide this tool to all who can benefit. Liz knows that clearMINDnow won’t solve the country’s drug problem, but she is determined that it will be a powerful tool for those seeking to change the trajectory of their lives.

While she hopes to never have a repeat customer, statistics show she probably will. “We never want to see someone come back to us, but we hope that if they find themselves in a position where they do need us, they will know where to start and not have to spend time searching,” she says.

Liz hopes that sharing her story and the process of developing this tool will allow others to learn that substance abuse disorder is a chronic disease, and those suffering from it need to be treated the way others with chronic disease are treated, with medical intervention, therapy and monitoring in turn, removing the stigma that so often follows it.

This spring, we are celebrating weddings and anniversaries, graduations and milestones achieved. And if we are honest, there is so much work that goes into planning these big events. It can feel like we’ve run a race when we finally get here. After all, what mother-of-the-bride hasn’t wished for her own weeklong-honeymoon-style getaway after helping to execute her daughter’s dream wedding? A Hotel with a Romantic Past

Sugar White Sands

For some, there is no getaway like a beach getaway. We get that. For those folks, we suggest something different than your typical 30-A trip: The Hotel Don CeSar in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also known as The Pink Palace, this grand hotel sits majestically on the sugar-white sands of St. Pete, just a short drive from the Tampa airport.

Pink Palace History

The Don (as it is also known) enjoys a rich romantic past that is honored still today. Real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe built the resort in the height of the Great Gatsby era of 1928, as a tribute to the love of his life. The property attracted a number of notable guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself and was quite the destination in its heyday before Rowe’s untimely death in 1940. Two years later, the United States Army purchased the property and used it as a place for returning WWII injured airmen to convalesce. After that, the hotel languished for several years before a group of investors lovingly brought it back to life.

Now a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America, much of the era’s panache can be felt in every corner of the hotel – from the vaulted ceilings of the marble-clad lobby to the wide breezeways to the guest rooms that feel very nautical in detail. There are grand ballrooms for large parties and sweeping vistas that recall that bygone era of grandeur. The hotel hosts weddings year-round where the Pink Palace feels like a de facto member of the party. While the hotel’s spa and idyllic beach setting are enough to keep guests on property, it would be a shame to miss some of the other fun things to do in the area.

In fact, take a page from New York Times’ best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, who set his most recent romantic novel, Dreamland, at the Don CeSar, a site he visits yearly and has great affection for. Birmingham local Susan Milner of Susan Milner Design sheds light on picking the perfect bouquets for every wedding season.

After 35 years in the interior design industry and 12 years in the wedding florals business, Susan Milner has seen it all. The beautiful, the intricate and the innately unique are all words that come to mind when describing the bouquets she creates for a bride’s big day.

Susan Milner Design was born through Susan’s volunteer work, planning events and decorating florals for her childrens’ school events such as proms and dinner banquets. A few of the other moms noticed her talent and asked her if she’d consider arranging florals for their own events, including their childrens’ weddings. What started as a side hustle is now one of Birmingham’s premier wedding floral businesses, which actually is but a branch of her own interior design company.

“Doing floral design was a natural extension of my interior design career,” Susan says. “A lot of the same mental tools are used. You need to understand how to work with color, proportions, scale. Those are universal design tools that apply to both fields.”

Susan began designing florals for two to three weddings a year, but now she does near 20 weddings or more a year.

“I have probably done 250 weddings,” Susan says with a laugh. Reflecting back on all of her brides’ nuptials, she’s quick to offer key advice.

“Brides should pick something they will love 20 years [down the road], looking at wedding pictures,” she explains. “To me, one of the biggest things is to try to stay away from trends. Classic, timeless designs are a hallmark of my work. I encourage brides to choose florals that are classic and will stand the test of time.”

One constant in Susan’s work is her dedication to helping a bride’s vision come to fruition on her wedding day. She recalls how the feeling she gets, watching a bride see her bouquet for the first time, is simply magical.

“My ultimate goal is for the bride to just be beyond thrilled with her florals,” Susan adds. “I want to exceed all expectations. I want to create florals that are beautiful, and I want to be proud to put my name on anything. Most importantly, I want the bride to be happy.”

Pure joy is a sentiment that all of Susan’s brides share. Here, Susan offers her take on seasonal florals that contribute to the “wedding bliss feeling.”

“Soft, airy colors and flowy textures just says, ‘spring,’” Susan explains. “Flowers such as spring bulbs, daffodils, hyacinth and foxglove are all just beautiful hallmarks of spring.” For this season, Susan recommends brides choose soft pastels such as pinks and whites to create a subtle, timeless design in their bouquets.

“Peonies are very summery,” Susan says. “You can go one of two ways in summer. You can go with soft pastels with cool whites, ivories and greenery. Or, you can go on the other end of the spectrum and do really hot, vibrant colors like orange and purple.” Whatever a bride chooses, Susan adds that the bouquet should match the aura of the dress. A more traditional silhouette, she believes, should pair with a more modest bouquet shape.

“Dahlias are the number one fall flowers that come to mind. They’re only available mid-to-late summer and in the fall. I also use ranunculus throughout the year. They’re fitting for fall,” Susan says. “To me, the richer colors and bringing in natural elements like berries, seed pods and fall greenery are the best inspiration for a fall bouquet.”

As for winter florals, Susan recommends either going with a “cool-white aesthetic” or playing on the season’s colors, such as red and green for Christmas or blue and white for Hanukkah. “I love bringing in wintery greens like pines and cedars,” Susan adds. “The scent can transport you to another place.”

Mary Glenn McElveen’s “how to look book” for dressing your bridal best.

Growing up in Mountain Brook, Mary Glenn McElveen woke up every morning ready to conquer the day in style. From strutting her high school’s hallways to making statements at social activities, Mary Glenn’s time spent curating her own style has contributed to her reputation as a stylist and tastemaker in her hometown.

“I remember as a little girl playing dress up,” she explains. “It was my creative outlet. Honestly, that hasn’t stopped in my life. Now, everyday style really is a part of who I am today. I feel like this is where I thrive.”

Being fashion forward, she says, has evolved in meaning to her over time. Now, it’s about accentuating her clients’ confidence by helping them feel the most like themselves in what they wear. Why? Because when one feels like a more “elevated” version of herself, she stands a little taller, walks more confidently and acts with purpose.

After graduating from Mountain Brook High School, Mary Glenn attended the University of Alabama, eventually earning a degree in marketing. Through her classes she learned the importance of selling her talents, whether this was through social media or the way she presented herself in fashion and design. This prompted her to spend the next few years styling houses and curating her taste inside the closet and throughout the home.

Around this time, girls that Mary Glenn had been helping style since they were high schoolers started getting engaged and needing Mary Glenn’s help for life’s more memorable moments. This sparked the realization that her clients and community had styling needs that she could meet more full-time.

“With my background being in the design world, [I formed] a lot of client-based relationships,” she says. “I’ve always been able to connect with people, really understanding their needs.”

This simple request soon snowballed into what is now Mary Glenn’s own business, M.G. Style. Boasting more than 35,000 Instagram followers, M.G. HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met at the University of Alabama in 2018 on our very first night of college. Blair was my first “game-day date” of my freshman year. We stayed friends the first three years and started dating the summer going into senior year!

THE PROPOSAL

Blair proposed to me on November 28, 2020. I thought I had it all figured out that I was getting engaged the weekend before. When I asked about it, I was told it wasn’t happening for a while and to be patient. So, I didn’t see it coming at all! That morning, Blair told me we were going to take Christmas card pictures for his mom at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and he proposed there! We had a big party afterwards with friends and family to watch the Iron Bowl!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

It’s hard to pinpoint one specific moment that is my favorite. The day was a dream, but I think having all of our friends and family in that same room made it so much fun. We have a lot of friends and family that live out of state, so it was so fun to get to celebrate with all of them.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL

The bracelet I wore is one of my favorite details from my wedding. My grandmother gifted it to me for Christmas one year and passed along the story. Her uncle gave it to a lady he fell in love with. Years later, my grandmother and grandfather unknowingly became good friends with the lady’s grandson and his wife. They found the bracelet, and his mother told them the story behind it. She gifted it to my grandmother. They joke about how they were almost cousins all the time now.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

I remember first meeting Wayne at Mountain Brook Junior High. It was Spartan Day when rising 7th graders tour the junior high with rising 9th graders, and he was my “web leader.” He remembers nothing since I was just one of 15 in his tour group, but I remember thinking how he made everyone feel seen and welcomed. It wasn’t until we both were back in Birmingham after attending the University of Alabama when we truly “met each other” on a blind date set up by mutual friends.

THE PROPOSAL

During our first summer dating, Wayne had just left corporate accounting to work at Alpine Camp for Boys where he had camped growing up. One night on our way up to Alpine for dinner with friends, we got caught in standstill traffic and were late to our supposed dinner. We finally pulled up to the top of camp near the fly fishing pond. Wayne and I got out of the car and walked to the edge of the pond where he dropped down on one knee. I later realized that this proposal spot would be the backyard of the house we would stay at during summers after we were married.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

After we had said our vows and exchanged rings, our guests sang a congregational prayer of blessing over us and our marriage. It was a blessing Wayne grew up singing on Alpine Sundays called “May the Lord Mighty God” (sung to the Tune of Edelweiss).

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

During the summer when we were dating long distance, Wayne would always bring me my favorite flowers. I now look back and think of that time as the summer of hydrangeas. I knew immediately as we started planning a wedding that I wanted to incorporate hydrangeas in our flower mix as a nod to that summer of us falling in love.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Jimmy and I met playing kickball in the fall of 2015. We were friends for several years before he asked me to Phoenix Ball in 2019. The rest was history!

THE PROPOSAL

Jimmy asked me to go to dinner with his family. On the way there, he said he wanted to see “a new area” of the Cannonball Factory walking trail. This was right on the way to his parents’ house, so it didn’t seem like a crazy idea. Once we got to the Cannonball Factory and walked a little bit, he suddenly stopped and said, “We have a lot of fun together, don’t we?” I said yes! Then he asked, “Well do you want to have fun forever?” He got down on one knee and proposed! His god sister was waiting in the bushes, taking pictures! We had a big party at his parents’ house with family and friends. I had no idea!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Turning around at the end of the ceremony and seeing all the wonderful family and friends that showed up! The sunset was beautiful that day too, so it made our outdoor ceremony even more special.

Our marque letters (Say It in Lights, LLC), balloons (Top Knot Parties) and our polaroid guest book were some favorites! We also had a bagpiper, Ryan Morrison, that played some songs, including the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision.” It was a unique musical addition that went well with the violin players and the outside atmosphere of our ceremony.

We met in college as a sophomore and a senior but did not start dating until my senior year. When the world shut down for Covid, I came home from school earlier than expected, and we got to spend way more time together. It was the best surprise, and the time we needed to grow our relationship. Fast forward two years, and we were getting married and starting our new lives as husband and wife in Birmingham!

THE PROPOSAL

Gaines’ parents bought a house on a road that overlooks the city. He told me we were going up there to look over the new architect plans before heading to dinner with his family. I totally believed him! When we got up there no one else was there, and he proposed on a sweet spot in their front yard. We both shed many, many tears and enjoyed a bottle of champagne together. It was the most special night!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

If we had to choose a favorite, the first look was so special to both of us because we felt like we were finally able to breathe and relax and enjoy the moment with just each other before all of the festivities began. We actually got to do it on the exact spot where he proposed, which made for the best pictures and even better memories.

FAVORITE DETAILS

We really wanted simple but elegant details whites, blues and other neutrals. The liner on our invitation was actually called ‘The Charlotte’ and kind of served as the mood board for all of our details. It was blue with champagne-colored sprinkles and a floral design. We had roses hanging from white ribbon as our centerpiece over the bar. Everything from the candles on the banquets, to the liner printed on the bar, to the full-room draping played a special part in the design. It was such a dream, and we could not have been more pleased with how everything turned out!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

It depends on who you ask! Daniel remembers meeting me in February 2017 at a house concert in Arlington, Virginia, but I don’t remember meeting Daniel until July 2017 during a group trip to Charleston, South Carolina. We remained only peripheral friends until October 2020, when Daniel asked me out. The first date went better than either of us were expecting, leaving us both surprised by the ease and richness of conversation from a single dinner.

THE PROPOSAL

Daniel took me on a day venture to Shenandoah National Park. We drove out early Saturday morning on July 24 and hiked up to an overlook called Mary’s Rock. After refueling with some salami, cheese and crackers–which was a major stray from Daniel’s granola bars he typically packs–he handed me a letter. I read his note, which said many wonderful things about an envisioned life together. I finished reading and looked up to a teary-eyed Daniel getting down on one knee, asking me to marry him.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

During our ceremony and right after we exchanged vows, the congregation sang a hymn, “We Will Feast in the House of Zion,” and during it, Daniel and I were kneeling at the altar of the sanctuary, hand in hand. This was certainly the most impactful moment of our wedding day.

On the Thursday evening of wedding weekend, we held a backyard party at my childhood home and continued the festivities into Friday night with a post-toast reception at Good People Brewing. Daniel and I also wanted to give a nod to where we met and the community of friends that brought us together, so our cups showcased the “Virginia is for Lovers” state slogan in bright green.

Christopher and I met in college at the University of Alabama, but it wasn’t until many years later when we both moved to Nashville that we became close friends and ultimately fell in love.

THE PROPOSAL

Christopher planned a trip to the Bahamas last October for my fall break (teacher perks)! On the first night there, we had just finished getting ready for dinner and were walking through our beautiful courtyard, looking out over the ocean to grab a drink before dinner. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! After acting extremely weird in the airport and overly protective of his carry on, I definitely should have caught on. I was shocked! It was the best surprise, and it was so special being able to celebrate at such an amazing destination and calling all of our loved ones to celebrate.

My favorite part of the wedding was recessing out of the church as husband and wife and seeing all of our friends and family, who came from all over, to be there for us on our day. It was a surreal moment that we will never forget!

Everyone involved in planning our wedding made it so special! From getting to wear some of my grandmothers’ jewelry and garter to my dad’s bourbon bar to the flowers, it was a dream come true! Getting married at my childhood church where my mom and stepdad, my dad and stepmom, my sister and brother-in-law and my brother and sister-in-law all got married was extremely special to me.

Chris and I met during our senior year at The University of Alabama. Chris introduced himself to me while we were both at Innisfree Pub, and I responded, “Yeah, I know who you are.” I was obviously embarrassed! Later that night, I told a friend that I met a cute boy while we were out. She asked who it was and knew him from high school! She set us up for the first date party of the school year, and we’ve been together ever since!

Chris made plans for our families to have dinner at The View at The Club. He asked if I wanted to go early with him to have a drink. While we were taking a photo, Chris got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Our families were watching through the window the entire time, and I had no idea!

FAVORITE MOMENT

Our first dance to “September” (September 21, 2017 was the night of our first date party together). We were so excited to get out there and dance, and we felt like it set the tone for the rest of the night!

Our welcome boxes were one of my favorite details! Chris and I included different Birmingham snacks since a lot of our guests were from out of town. We included Savage’s smiley cookies, Naughty but Nice Kettle Corn Co. kettle corn and Alabama Peanut Co. peanuts.

We met at the lake in 2015! Lee and I were both there with friends and ended up at the same party. I had just graduated from college and was starting my job in Birmingham, which is where Lee lived. I think 10 people from that weekend actually ended up being in our wedding! Coincidentally, we had a lot of mutual friends, so we spent a lot of time together that summer and eventually started dating in the fall.

THE PROPOSAL

Lee proposed at home, so our golden retriever could be there! He coordinated the most perfect weekend, and I have to give him credit because planning is not his forte. After the proposal we went to dinner with our parents and then back home where some of our friends were waiting to surprise us. I had no idea he had also planned a party the next night, so all of our family and friends could celebrate with us. For me, it rivals our wedding weekend. I was so surprised and felt so loved. It was the perfect way to kick off our engagement.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Our favorite moment was during the reception when we were Greek dancing! Everyone joined in and gave it a try. It was so much fun! Afterwards, everyone stayed on the dance floor and kept it going all night long. They were lifting us up in chairs and everything. I don’t think anyone was sitting down. It really was a big, fat Greek wedding!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

I loved the flowers. We decided to do bright flowers mixed with lights, candles, citrus fruits and colored table cloths. When we walked in to see the venue, I couldn’t believe how perfectly it all came together. We also loved the party favors at the end of the night. Light-up leis and flower crowns and ice cubes that lit up, too! I love looking at the pictures. It was beautiful, and everyone seemed to be have the best time.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

After only briefly meeting freshman year of college, ironically dressed as a bride and groom for the theme of the event, we knew that we wanted to know each other better. We parted ways, but Noah remained close friends with all of my friends and roommates. Architecture school kept me busy enough for a year and a half before I managed to make it to the big leagues. After reconnecting sophomore year, he quickly became my best friend, but soon after, we both knew there was something more there.

THE PROPOSAL

After a canceled flight, Noah drove through the night from North Carolina to propose to me. At the proposal he had rose petals and candles leading up to a satin box with my monogram. Inside of that box were keepsakes from our three and a half years of dating, including the engagement ring disguised in a ring pop bag because I had told him years prior that I would say yes to a ring pop.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Our two favorite moments from our wedding day were our wedding vows and our first dance. We both messed up when saying our wedding vows, and we held each other’s hands tight and laughed our way through it. When it came time for our first dance, we realized we had not thought to practice beforehand. Once again, we held each other, trusted in each other and lived in the moment.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

We got married in my childhood church, where my parents got married. Our flower girl wore the same dress as the flower girl in my parents’ wedding. I wore sapphire earrings that Noah gifted me for my something blue along with my garter that I wore the night I met Noah.

Brett and I met in June 2018 after we both found ourselves back in Birmingham, looking to meet new people. After texting for a few weeks and getting to know each other better, we decided to go on our first official date over chips and queso. Our relationship grew in the kitchen as we cooked dinner together nearly every night for four years.

THE PROPOSAL

One weekend in April, we traveled down to Brett’s family’s beach house. Towards the end of the day, Brett suggested we go on a walk. As we approached a secluded area of the beach, Brett got down on one knee and proposed! We soon after heard cheering and clapping. We realized a small group further down the beach had witnessed the proposal. They waved us over to congratulate us, take pictures of us and give us a celebratory drink!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Our favorite moment was our first look before the ceremony. I had been keeping a pretty big secret from Brett for two weeks, and I was so excited to finally give him something he’s always wanted: a golden retriever. While seeing Murphy run around the corner was a highlight of our wedding day, Brett’s favorite moment during that time was the moment he turned around to see me as his bride for the very first time.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

My favorite detail was the music we chose for our ceremony. My bridesmaids walked down the aisle to “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,” which is the hymn my mom walked down the aisle to when she married my dad 33 years ago. It was incredibly special to stand in the narthex with my dad as he realized which piece was playing right before we walked down the aisle together for my own wedding.

I met Luke on New Year’s Day in 2021 when my roommates invited a bunch of people over for game night and college football. Luke had been good friends with some of my then roommates when they were students at Auburn. My roommates claim they knew all along there was potential there. We kept running into each other while he was in town interviewing for jobs. Shortly after, we went on our first date and thankfully have been together ever since!

THE PROPOSAL

Luke proposed one year later on January 8, 2022. His initial plan was to propose on Crest Road with the beautiful view of the city as the backdrop. But when he got there to set up, someone else was setting up in the exact same spot! So at the very last minute (he was already late to pick me up), he came up with a new plan and went just a few streets over to a different, beautiful Birmingham view. When we arrived, a different couple was getting engaged there! I said, “Someone is getting engaged!” And he said, “Yes, someone is getting engaged!” It took me a minute once we got up to the view to realize that the pictures on the little table set up were of us! He even gave me a Bible that would have my new last name.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Having the ceremony at the church I grew up in was incredibly special. Our ceremony was officiated by one of the pastors at the church Luke and I now attend, but my older brother who is an ordained minister performed our vows.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

I loved that I was able to wear my great-grandmother’s earrings and thought it was so special to carry a piece of her with me. I also loved reimagining and feminizing the McEwen family crest and featuring it on our cups and koozies at the reception!

I love the holiday parade because it brings the entire community together at the best time of the year. I especially love the effort that the city goes through to make Mountain Brook look the best during the season. I love seeing all of the photos taken in front of the Bromberg’s tree. I wonder how many people have gotten engaged in front of that tree!

A new favorite spot of mine is the bench that the chamber members and the Leadership Mountain Brook class dedicated to me at City Hall. Frequently, I get photos of friends sitting on the bench. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
