ON THE COVER

AAdventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. No trope chronicles the bond between two soulmates more than love stories. Justin and my love story began when we met through my cousin, Bobby, at the beach and strengthened as we welcomed our sweet son, Jacob, into the world several years later.

Nine months after Jacob’s arrival, Justin and I journeyed to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with my family to honor my late father’s memory and scatter his ashes in the city he loved so much. Ironically, this happened to be the second year in a row that my family embarked on this trip to honor my father while also having forgotten to bring my “father” along.

About two hours into our five-hour-long trip, my mother realized we left my father–again–and quickly thought of a coverup story. She asked Justin when he was planning to propose. Keep in mind, my mother is as straightforward as the stairwell to heaven. Justin, however, came prepared with the ring he secretly purchased several months earlier and took this trip as an opportunity to open a new chapter in our lives.

My mother, my sister, my Aunt Mary Catherine “MC,” Jacob, Justin and I on our trip decided to venture up to the top of Anakeesta–one of the tallest points in the city–to admire the view. Several hours of raging postpartum mood swings and hot flashes later, I decided I was done for the day and was going back to the cabin.

Without missing a beat, Aunt MC told me she was going to buy me new shoes, so that my feet wouldn’t hurt, and I would continue the hike. Before I could object, she sprinted to the nearest boutique and bought the first pair of cute flats she could find. Sheepishly, I thanked her graciously and wore my new shoes the rest of the trip.

When we finally arrived at Heart Twigloo at Vista Gardens, I actually said, “Hey, this would be a great place to propose.” Little did I know how accurate I actually was. Justin and I waited our turn to get a picture taken and right as I turned to look at the view, he dropped to one knee and asked me the question I’d dreamt of hearing most all of my life.

Saying I was shocked would have been the understatement of the decade. I was so surprised and happy that when I finally blurted out my answer, I accidentally gave my right hand instead of my left for Justin to slide my “ring by spring” onto my finger.

In this issue, you all will read about Vestavia Hills Magazine’s 12 featured couples and their love stories. No matter how intricate or cliché, each story is unique, and what I hope will renew in you all a fondness for adventuring in love. Love on, readers!

Benefitting the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at UAB, the fourth annual Superhero Fun Run and 12th annual Rebel 5K Color Run will take place at Vestavia Hills High School. The Superhero Fun Run features kids in 1st-5th grade and adult volunteers dressed as their favorite superheroes. Kids can run, walk or skip to the finish line. Later on, the 12th annual Rebel 5K Color Run, which is open for teens and adults, will start in Vestavia Hills High School’s front parking lot and will wind through scenic neighborhoods near the high school. Registration fees for both races are $20

The Broadway tour of Disney’s “Aladdin” premiered recently at the BJCC, and Vestavia Hills’ own Nicole Lamb delighted the audience with her stunning vocals and enchanting stage presence. Nicole, whose role as an understudy prepares her to play any of the female ensemble roles and Princess Jasmine, has been in show business for some time.

EMERGING LEADERS

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, Liberty Park Middle School announced on Facebook that one of its own social studies teachers, Chassi Waddell, had won the Emerging Leader Award at the Alabama ASCD. This award is only given to teachers, who are in their first 15 years of education who demonstrate a strong initiative to enrich the lives of their students.

Stephanie Farrell creates beautiful, handmade jewelry–each piece garnering beauty in the eye of its beholder.

TTo find one’s purpose, one must find her passion–a catalyst fusing her will to achieve even her wildest dreams. For artist Stephanie Farrell, finding a newfound purpose came at an uncertain time in her life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stephanie, who graduated from UAB with a degree in marketing, worked in computer software for several years before bringing her son into the world in 2014. She has since focused on being a homemaker–her number-one priority being raising her son.

One day while shopping with a friend, Stephanie and her friend saw a pair of clay earrings. Her friend told her she could make something similar, but Stephanie shrugged it off, laughing.

Fast forward several months, and the pandemic hit, forcing her son to do virtual school. Stephanie joked that preoccupying her then kindergarten-age

child proved no small feat, so she watched YouTube videos on creating arts and crafts–anything she could think of to do with her son.

“I started watching YouTube videos on clay earrings, and for months, I played with clay and made little earrings,” Stephanie says. “My husband came into my studio and said, ‘What are you going to do with all of these? You have two ears!’”

With her husband’s encouragement, Stephanie decided to take a leap of faith and try something new: opening her own jewelry business. Six16 Creative–a moniker referencing her son’s birthday–officially launched in August 2021, and since then, Stephanie has traveled locally, selling her jewelry at pop-up shops, vendor markets and more.

To make her jewelry, Stephanie first sources her clay and dyes from as many small, local businesses as she can. She loves supporting small business

owners such as herself.

She then will mix colors into the clay, folding the clay and meshing it into clay cutters, which she describes as “clay cookie cutters.” Some designs she cuts by hand.

Depending on what type of design she’s feeling, Stephanie will add in differently textured elements for a unique look and will bake her designs into perfection. Once her clay designs come out of the oven, she sands the edges and assembles the earring clasps onto them.

With nearly 100 designs to choose from, Six16 Creative offers a wide variety of both earrings for pierced ears and clip-ons, options for customers of all ages and with different tastes. Some of Stephanie’s best-sellers are from her holiday collections, such as Christmas trees and wreaths, baby chicks for Easter and pumpkins or ghosts for Halloween.

Those with an eclectic taste will appreciate the business’s design featuring the cast of “The Golden Girls” or the infamous “leg lamp” from “A Christmas Story.”

can create it.

“I try to make things that are fun and unique–things not everyone has,” Stephanie says. “I have a lot of black and white earrings, but they’re not just run of the mill. I always incorporate something fun into my designs.”

One of her favorite designs to create are custom orders. One of Stephanie’s customers took her daughter to one of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts. To commemorate their memory together, Stephanie made special earrings saying, “eras,” for both the mom and her daughter to wear.

When she first started her business, Stephanie says she didn’t realize how much younger girls enjoyed being able to match with their mothers. She

now creates smaller versions of her larger designs (some clip-on options as well) for daughters and mothers to match.

“I have found one of the most exciting parts of this business is watching their faces light up when I would say, ‘I have something for you, too,’” Stephanie says of her “littlest customers.”

Not only does Stephanie enjoy creating unique works of art, but she also pays attention to how Six16 Creative can benefit the community that has helped her grow her business. Vestavia Hills Elementary West (VHEW)–her son’s school–has a food pantry that gives out take-home meals on weekends for children who are food insecure.

Stephanie decided to create designs modeled after VHEW’s service dog, Merlin, and a portion of those proceeds benefited the food pantry’s missions. Several of VHEW’s female students wore “Merlin” in

“I get to create things, where people can ‘wear their memories’ and share those with whom they love,” Stephanie says. “It’s cool to be a part of those experiences for others.”

The sense of accomplishment she feels from creating, Stephanie says, is a feeling she will never stop chasing. Thanks to Six16 Creative, she, too, is able to provide for her family–another blessing born from her passion.

Stephanie says she never would have thought she could become an entrepreneur–much less an artist–without her friends and family’s support. She credits her husband for helping ignite her dreams into fruition.

Looking forward, Stephanie hopes her business will inspire other stay-at-home mothers to pursue their goals outside of creating a haven of which to raise their children. After all, if one can dream it, she can do it, Stephanie says.

IIf food tastes better when cooked with care, those who care for one another make the best meals–hands down. For uncle and nephew duo Miguel and Julio Peralta, expanding their popular, Calerabased restaurant, Mama Coco Cantina, to Vestavia Hills was a no-brainer when the opportunity presented itself.

Located in the former Metro Diner space off of Montgomery Highway, Mama Coco Cantina officially opened its doors on Nov. 7, 2022. Mama Coco Cantina’s general manager Jessica Vargas says the success of the Calera location propelled the Peraltas to venture with their business into an untapped market, helping diversify the foodie scene in Vestavia Hills.

Although, the Peraltas are no stranger to the

restaurant industry. Miguel, a native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, immigrated to the United States–first to Tennessee–where he began working in the restaurant scene, learning the ins and outs of how to run a successful business.

He later moved to Hanceville, Alabama, where he opened his first restaurant, Lupita’s–whose moniker references his grandmother, Guadalupe ‘Lupita’ Peralta. Miguel soon invited more of his family to help him run his business, and little by little, multiple members of his family were helping him expand into cities throughout Alabama.

“What I appreciate is that they’re really humble,” Jessica says of Miguel and Julio. “They look out for their employees, and working with them has been great. It feels like I’ve known them my whole life.”

“They opened their doors to me,” Jessica says. “When I first met them, the staff was all related–uncles, cousins. They’ve taught me what everything was about.”

The foundation of each business, she says, is family–the reason their businesses have seen such success. Mama Coco Cantina, although not having anything to do with the popular Disney film, pays tribute to Lupita, who was affectionately known as “mama” to so many in her community.

Jessica says the way the staff treats one another and customers, the menus and the overall atmosphere of each restaurant stems from how Lupita fostered a culture of fellowship, enriching the lives of everyone who was blessed to know her. When a customer strolls in, they are immediately greeted with enduring smiles and hearty “hello’s” before making their way to their seats.

At first glance, Mama Coco Cantina’s menu offers an eclectic variety of authentic, Mexican dishes. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something they enjoy.

“I just want people to open up more to our culture–our menu–I feel like if they stepped out of their comfort zone, they might really enjoy it,” Jessica says.

Appetizers such as the Mexican dip–a combination of pico de gallo, ground beef or chicken and cheese sauce–is great to warm up one’s palate. The ceviche, which is comprised of crab meat, fish, shrimp and pico de gallo all cooked in lime juice, paired with any of the house margaritas, never disappoints.

A great choice for lunch, the shrimp tacos’ meat is sautéed with chipotle sauce and served with white rice and a side salad. Seafood lovers will also love the filet riviera, which is tilapia over a shrimp

Vegetarians, on the other hand, will appreciate the menu’s accommodations for their tastes, including the one-mushroom or one-spinach quesadillas. A fan favorite among this crowd is the chimichanga–a flour tortilla filled with steam and grilled vegetables under a thick layer of cheese sauce and served with lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, guacamole, rice and beans.

Uniquely, Mama Coco Cantina does not just serve authentic cuisine, but the staff also cooks in the traditional ways, paying homage to their culture’s traditions. Several meals are made in molcajetes, which Jessica says are volcanic stone bowls.

These bowls are used for grinding spices and tenderizing meats. This tradition elevates the richness in flavors, helping one to taste every region of the world of which the meal’s seasonings originate.

The steak huasteco–a house favorite–along with the rodeo steak and smoked asada prove to be some of the most popular items on the menu, whose flavors are only strengthened by Mama Coco Cantina’s traditional ways of cooking.

When choosing where to open the next location of Chopt, how did the owners decide on Vestavia Hills?

We were drawn to Vestavia Hills after opening our first store in Birmingham at The Summit in 2021. At Chopt, it’s important to become a part of our local communities, and in Vestavia Hills, we’ve always felt right at home. People are friendly, there’s a fun atmosphere and the food and beverage scene is really expanding. We’re excited to be a part of this community and continuing to grow with it.

What are some fan favorites on the menu, and which do you think newcomers should try first?

We have a lot of unique offerings! My favorite warm bowl is our chicken tinga–the braised chicken tinga is rich and flavorful, combined with some favorite Latin-leaning choppings and our crowd-favorite Mexican goddess dressing. You can’t go wrong with that one. The Chopt Greek has only been on our menu for about a year, and it’s my go-to. Every bit of flavor and texture you could want can easily be made a little heartier

It was their founding mission to make healthy eating exciting for all people, and Chopt continues to this day to explore new ways for their guests to make better eating a part of their daily lives. Here, Ali Banks, vice president of culinary for Founders Table Restaurant Group, gives an insider scoop on the salad business.

with grilled chicken or falafel. On the move, I always get our kale Caesar as a wrap. I get our creamy Caesar dressing on the side and dip a little with each bite.

What is the most unique item on the menu, and what is it made of?

I think our most unique item is our Mexican Caesar. We took the classic flavors of a Caesar dressing and salad and made them craveable with Mexican ingredients like chipotles in adobo and cotija cheese. The salad is super simple but will be a constant craving once you try it.

What about Chopt’s menu makes it stand out from other similar businesses in the area?

Chopt is super creative–we never stop innovating. I think that makes us stand out because you can really choose your own adventure. You can craft your own salad or bowl using one of our 20 or more dressings, have a kale Caesar four days a week or continually try our rotating seasonal salads, bowls and dressings with curated artisan partners. We keep it consistent while always

keeping it interesting.

When did you start working with Chopt, and why do you stay?

I started with Chopt in 2016. It’s been a really interesting role to be in for such a long time. When I started, we were just opening our 37th location, and now, we’re inching towards 100. I stay because we like to innovate and work with new partners. It would be boring to make kale Caesar salads every day, but I think we’ve put at least 20 different, new Caesars on the menu since I’ve been here, plus countless new salad and bowl inventions. I get to do this partnered with the best ingredients out there. I love being able to try a new ingredient, especially an emerging brand, and put it in Chopt locations nationwide. I’ve developed great relationships with incredible food entrepreneurs. It’s awesome!

Maci and Joel Mize tied the knot on Sept. 23, 2023, at Allie’s Cabin in Beaver Creek Village, Colorado.

Kaylee Morgan painted a watercolor landscape of the beautiful Rocky Mountains for the couple's destination wedding. It is used on the invitations' vellum overlay.

The Mize’s invitation suites were printed on square Arturo paper, which is an Italian, hand-torn paper.

Mary Hunter and Healy Vise joined in joyful union on May 20, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi. What is unique about this couple’s suite is their blend between traditional and contemporary design.

While Mary Hunter chose champagne lettering in scripts Prints Charming and Mozart, she modernized her suite with cohesive branding. A custom shield and duogram was designed with the couple's initials and was used on the dance floor, favors and more.

Floral arrangements carry such a sentimentality that physically showcases the vision of any bride’s desired palette, stylistic choices and decorum. Here, Sasha Johns, managing partner of Amazing Flowers and Occasions, reveals just how her arrangements helped bring to life the wedding vision of her clients and friends, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson.

Sasha had the thrill of any florist’s career–designing gorgeous florals for her family friend’s wedding. Sasha first met the happy couple, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson, through Kaitlyn’s mother, Suzanne. The two friends go back nearly 15 years, and Sasha says this has been one of her most favorite events.

The Details

Sasha utilized ivory and peach garden roses; pink, ivory and white stock; periwinkle delphinium; and yellow and peach ranunculus. She added in bits of greenery including green dragon, olive branches and both silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus into Kaitlyn’s bouquet and the ceremony’s standing arrangements.

Diane Olexa’s love for beautiful pastry art grew as she did–watching her mother bake. At only age 23, Diane created her first-ever wedding cake for her college roommate in 1993. She started out creating one or two wedding cakes a week. She began creating cakes for her friends and her loved ones’ weddings, and in 1996, she extended her business to include event catering with her mother’s expertise to officially create the Olexa’s brand. Eight years later, Olexa’s following accumulated so much that Diane decided to open the business’s first brick and mortar in 2004 in quaint Mountain Brook Village.

A 30-year veteran of the wedding industry, Diane says this business is special because of the memories she’s able to help create for her customers. Olexa’s today creates upwards of 200 birthday and wedding cakes a week, all while catering events and operating its intimate dining setting for guests six days a week. She redesigned the majority of the color palette, but chose to leave a lot of the interior decor to create such ambiance that helped her customers feel as though they were dining in a European courtyard.

Schuck and I met just a couple of days after I moved to Nashville from Birmingham. A mutual friend invited me to a group brunch to help me meet friends and introduced us to each other with the belief we’d hit it off. He was right! After Schuck and I started talking, we learned that we’d actually been circling around each other for years at the same parties during our time in college and even a few of the same concerts, sitting just a few rows apart from one another! We quickly became good friends.

THE PROPOSAL

Schuck proposed to me at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens in Nashville. Cheekwood has always been a sentimental spot for me as my grandparents took me there as a child for years to visit the gardens. When we began dating, Cheekwood became our own special place to come each year at the start of spring, when all the flowers are blooming, including my favorites, tulips. Under the guise of my yearly birthday celebration, he proposed under a beautiful arch of tulips and read a heartfelt letter he had written.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS

My veil is a family heirloom that was worn by my grandmother in 1964, my mother in 1989 and my sister in 2020 in each of their own weddings. The veil is accented with lace at the end, so I dreamed of a dress that complemented the material. Overall, I loved that my veil accentuated my gown.

Don’t let anyone change your mind about what you and your fiancé want. Decide what details are important to you both and stick with them. Take the whole process one step at a time, and it will all come together.

We consider ours a modern love story. A mutual connection, one swipe right and a witty message later, the conversation never stopped. It was 2020, and the world was in disarray. Meanwhile, we were building a foundation of friendship and embarking on the next chapter of our lives together. We like to joke that we found love in a hopeless place.

THE PROPOSAL

Stan’s perspective–Our proposal took place at the very spot our lives first crossed paths. Although we didn’t know each other before we matched on Hinge, Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports is where we both worked. I had originally planned to pop the question on the Tuscaloosa River Walk right outside of the Tuscaloosa Visitors Center, but of course, it started raining. With the help of family and coworkers, I surprised Allie and proposed on her birthday in the same hallway we walked through every day.

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of a classic winter wedding. I wanted to wear a stunning, long-sleeved dress with a cathedral veil, and I wanted my bridesmaids to wear velvet. I worked closely with Robert Bullock to create my custom gown, which was one of the most amazing and heartwarming experiences during wedding planning.

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE

I would suggest brides start by sitting down with their future husband to list their priorities and vision for their wedding. Pick a date that gives you ample time to book and plan. Next, secure all of your main vendors—photographer, venue, planner/day of coordinator, florist, decor, caterer. Take everything piece by piece, and remember to enjoy the process.

We met on Hinge, and it was only after matching that I realized he lived an hour and a half away in Athens, Alabama, but I was still interested. After about two weeks of texting, we finally made it work to meet and go to dinner. He drove down to Birmingham, and we sat at a small table in the corner of Little Donkey for three hours, talking the night away. At the end of dinner, we knew there was a connection and were already making plans for me to drive to Athens the next weekend to see him. To this day, whenever we find ourselves in Birmingham, we head to Little Donkey for a walk down memory lane.

THE PROPOSAL

On our anniversary, Ben made plans to go to brunch and then head to my family’s lake house to spend the weekend together since that was the halfway point between Birmingham and Athens. As we pulled up and I started to get my bags out, he told me to put my bag back in the car and began walking me to the back deck that was covered in floral arrangements and pictures of us.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS

I wanted sleeves, but I wanted something unique. I tried on three or four dresses with sleeves that I liked, but nothing felt quite right. My bridal consultant, Paige, decided to have me try on a strapless, fitted dress and grabbed some fabric to mimic a sleeve. I immediately loved it and knew the best thing to top it off was a bow on the back. I took my dress to Something You Couture, and my seamstress, Ashley, made my puff sleeve dress dreams come true!

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE

Stick with your gut! Don’t worry about what other people might think. This wedding is for you and your spouse, so as long as you both are happy, that’s all that matters.

We met in college briefly but did not think anything of it. We reconnected again in 2020, thanks to Instagram and the COVID-19 pandemic. He reached out after seeing me on social media play golf with my parents back in Ohio. After much persuasion, I agreed to go on a date.

THE PROPOSAL

He convinced me we needed to take our golden retriever on a walk even though it was freezing cold. When we got back to my house, he stopped in the driveway and got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. After I said yes, I wanted to call my family, not realizing they had secretly made the trip to Birmingham right before the snow storm hit to be with us and celebrate! We spent the rest of the day celebrating with friends and family.

I wanted something simple and something I could stay in for the entire day. My bridal consultant, Kristen, nailed it, and my dress ended up being the second one I tried on. I fell in love with the simplicity and attention to detail. I loved the sheer back and buttons!

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE

Enjoy the season! It is so easy to get caught up in the little details and let stress steal the joy. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is you and your husband. Don’t sweat the small things.

William was a sophomore and I was a freshman at Vestavia Hills High School when we met. Several of our mutual friends thought we would be a good match and coaxed me into asking him to the Sadie Hawkins dance that year. We ended up having a wonderful time together, and the rest is history.

THE PROPOSAL

I thought I was coming home for my grandmother’s birthday party at my house. When I walked in, no one was in the house. William always whistles to let me know he is around, so when I heard him whistle, I followed the sound to the backdoor. There, William was waiting with a ring and the most handsome grin.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS

I wanted a simple, strapless gown. I went to The Something Blue Shoppe in Hartselle, Alabama. I tried on two gowns of which I loved different parts. One was a Robert Bullock gown that I loved everything about except that it did not have a detachable train. The Something Blue Shoppe reached out to Robert, and he designed my dream gown! I had the long train for the wedding and was able to remove it for the reception.

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE

I had so much fun planning our wedding! I was able to incorporate meaningful details. I wore my grandmother’s ring and bracelet. I had my mom’s wedding gown redesigned and wore it for my rehearsal. Several sweet ladies from my church created my floral arrangements, and my mom’s friends designed the florals for our reception. My advice is to make your wedding more meaningful with the small, personal details.

Tom and I met in the young professionals group at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta. We both went on a mission trip to Belize, where we formed a friendship that slowly turned into more. We had our first date on a hot day in July 2019, where Tom “affectionately” remembers I picked a table on the patio that allowed me sit in the shade and left him baking in the sun.

THE PROPOSAL

In college, Tom studied abroad for a semester in Vienna. When we started planning a trip to Europe for summer 2022, he wanted to make sure Vienna was one of our stops since I had never been. He proposed in front of the Schönbrunn Palace! I don’t remember a word he said, but I knew it was the easiest “yes” of my life. Afterwards, we celebrated with a traditional Viennese dinner and champagne.

I went to my wedding dress appointment unsure of what I wanted my dress to look like. When the owner of the shop pulled this dress for me to try on, I knew it was the perfect balance of traditional elegance and chic style suited to my personality. I fell in love with the incredibly detailed applique flowers at the top of the dress. When the talented Telia Johnson was making my cake, she handmade sugar flowers that were inspired by the flowers on my dress.

Zac and I met our freshmen year of college at the University of Alabama. I was going to Zac’s fraternity’s formal in New Orleans with his best friend, but I didn’t know Zac at the time. I met him on that trip, and when we got home, he asked me on a date. I kept saying no out of fear—I had never dated anyone before Zac. I knew that if we dated, it would be serious. Zac kept asking me on dates, and he even surprised me on my spring break trip by showing up at our beach house and asking me out! We went on our first date to Avenue Pub in Tuscaloosa, and I can confidently say I knew that night that Zac was going to be my husband.

THE PROPOSAL

Zac lined up a series of blind dates. The only instructions for each date were to wear a sundress and bring a blindfold. He had seven blind dates lined up on the calendar, and on the first of the seven blind dates, he asked me to be his wife. He picked me up, blindfolded me, drove us down to a beautiful pond, held my hand and led me to the dock. When he took my blindfold off, he was on one knee! He spoke some of the most beautiful words I have ever heard. Afterwards, he led me up the hill to our engagement party, which was filled with all of our friends and family.

My wedding dress was what I had always dreamed it would be. I loved the train of my dress, the ballgown style and the buttons lining the back of the dress.

A goal Zac and I had for our wedding day was to make it holy and let the Lord be glorified! If that is your goal as well, praise Him for the day and for the gift of marriage.

Dylan and I met while in pharmacy school at Samford University. We coincidentally sat beside each other during class at the beginning of our third year in 2019 and became friends playing intramural sports together. Soon after, we realized we were perfect together, and everything fell into place.

THE PROPOSAL

Along with my family and closest friends, Dylan planned the most amazing proposal! We were heading to what I thought was a New Year’s Eve party at one of my favorite houses in my hometown of Brewton, Alabama. After arriving, Dylan led me to a beautiful setup with candles and lighted marquee letters spelling out, “marry me.” He got down on one knee, popped the question and all of our favorite people ran out to congratulate us. We spent the rest of the night on “cloud nine” at the most special engagement party.

I wanted something that was both timeless and modern, and I got just that in my wedding gown. The boning and lace in my dress is what set it apart from others and made me fall in love with it. The bridal consultants at Bella’s Bridal and Formal helped me make a few changes to the original dress to make it absolute perfection.

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE

Start as early as possible, and get a wedding planner if you can. Being able to get the vendors you want puts your mind at ease, and I cannot say enough good things about having a wedding planner and having a photographer you’re comfortable with. Eleanor Stenner was the biggest help with getting everyone in order and making us look our best. Symone Shaw went above and beyond, making sure everything was perfect.

Whitt’s perspective—Shelley and I met during our freshman year at Auburn University. Our first memory together was when I offered to walk her back to her dorm after a social event. It was a purely platonic offer, but I remember bonding over being in the same major and attending the same church. We both moved to Birmingham after graduating, and I finally asked her on a date! We were the proverbial “just friends” who everyone else saw differently long before we did.

Whitt’s perspective—I decided September 9, 2022, was the perfect day, and I picked a place Shelley and I both love— Shoppe—a local plant store. Earlier that day, Shelley informed me that she was ready for me to propose, and before I could stop myself, I responded a bit sarcastically saying, “No, that’s later tonight.” Thankfully, that got me off the hook. A friend picked Shelley up to go to dinner and brought her to Shoppe. I stepped out of the greenhouse to where Shelley could see me, and the pure joy on her face was a beautiful memory I’ll always cherish.

Shelley’s perspective—From the start of planning, I knew I wanted the entire wedding day to feel like a “garden party,” and my dress was no exception. Bradley and I met in high school. We went to opposing high schools and were set up by a good friend. We dated briefly but nothing serious. We both went on to attend the University of Alabama, where we saw each other at social events but dated other people and went our separate ways before reconnecting later on.

My mom and stepdad had come into town to meet Bradley’s family for the first time. We had made reservations at Hot and Hot Fish Club for everyone to meet that night. Bradley had been in touch with my mom and my best friend, MacKenzie, and decided to make this night the night he proposed. Before dinner, he told me he needed to pick up something for our moms. As we were driving, the bottom fell out of the sky. It was pouring right as we were getting off at the Birmingham Zoo exit. He proceeded to drive to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, where he eventually proposed! We were so overjoyed but absolutely drenched! It was still magical.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS

I had no idea what I wanted in a dress. I went in blindly with no expectations. The dress I chose was the eighth dress I tried on, and I just knew it was the one for me. I looked over at my mom when I tried it on, and she was crying. I had never felt more beautiful before in my life. The detail, the beading, the daintiness, the design, the fitting and the lace were everything I didn’t know I wanted and more.

Be in the moment! Enjoy all of the little things and the big moments. It goes by so fast! Don’t get caught up in the small details and worrying about something going wrong. Your wedding day will be one of the most special days of your life.

Aaron and I went to the same college. He claims it was love at first sight, but me, not so much. Aaron played the long game. Mutual friends kept trying to set us up, and eventually, I gave in. I am thankful for persistent friends and my succumbency.

THE PROPOSAL

It was right after Thanksgiving in Aaron’s hometown of Lakeland, Florida. Aaron suggested a walk in this brand new, beautiful park that had just opened up—specifically at sunset, right before “dinner with his family.” None of those things nor the giant bulge of the ring box in his back pocket set me off, however. After a long, hot stroll, we made it to a hanging bridge, where I was escorted over to watch the sunset. Then, he got down on one knee! It was the easiest yes of my life.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS

I wanted to go with the “no detail and all-simple look.” However, my maids of honor (my cousins) made me try on an all-lace dress. Begrudgingly, I tried it on, and immediately, I knew it was the one. The lace is timeless in its own way.

Take it one day at a time. Step back if it becomes a lot. Savor your wedding day, and look for “little happies” along the way.

I attended Birmingham-Southern College with Jake’s brother and sister, Hanes and Honey. I was Hanes’s orientation leader his freshman year. He introduced me to Honey, who ended up coming to school there the next year. She had the idea to set me up with her older brother and got Hanes involved to help make it happen. It was the weekend of the Alabama/ Georgia game. I went to Tuscaloosa to meet Jake for lunch, and the rest is history.

THE PROPOSAL

We were meeting my mom at church. My grandparents passed away several years ago and are buried in the columbarium garden there. My mom asked us to meet us there, so she could take flowers to the gravesite in honor of my grandfather’s birthday. It was all a big plan, and while I was looking for my mom, Jake got down on one knee and pulled out the ring box. I was so surprised and touched that he honored my grandparents at such a special moment in our lives.

The overall elegance and simplicity really spoke to me. The fabric was like icing. What really made me fall in love was the tiered hem at the bottom that led into the train. I felt so beautiful in such a gorgeously designed gown.

I wanted to get married in Canterbury United Methodist Church because my parents and in-laws got married there. We wanted to carry on the family tradition, and Jenny Dansby helped make it happen. My advice is to find a great planner that can understand your vision and make it a reality.

On Saturday, Nov. 18 in Liberty Park, the Amanda Pair Foundation held its second annual Legacy Run, which fundraised for the Amanda Pair Memorial Scholarship. Amanda Pair, an avid Christian and Vestavia Hills resident, was diagnosed with stage IV adenocarcinoma of the lung in 2021 despite being a non-smoker. She was called home to heaven in June 2022.
