WELCOME Nestled in the heart of Alabama’s central region, Shelby County is rich in quality of life, natural resources and a spirit of cooperation that people continue to flock to it year after year. Shelby County’s growth—our population has reached more than 213,000 in the latest U.S. Census estimates—has been fueled by many factors, including excellent school systems, a plethora of recreational offerings, family-friendly community festivals and much, much more. The educational systems in Shelby County are among the best the state has to offer. Whether it’s the Alabaster City School System, the Hoover City School System, the Pelham City School System, the Shelby County School System or any one of the county’s excellent private schools, you can be sure your children are in good hands preparing for their future. For adults seeking higher education, the University of Montevallo and Jefferson State Community College’s Shelby-Hoover Campus have outstanding programs designed to have a successful career. Whether you’re a new or lifelong resident, the county has plenty of entertainment offerings. Why not take a trip to Alabama’s largest park, Oak Mountain State Park, or catch an event sponsored by the Shelby County Arts Council or visit the American Village in Montevallo? There are many reasons Shelby County is still one of the fastest-growing counties in Alabama, and we’d welcome the opportunity to call you “neighbor.”

COUNTY HISTORY Shelby County’s history predates Alabama’s statehood. Here’s how it got its start. Shelby County was established in 1818 by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly from former Creek Indian territory ceded in the Treaty of Fort Jackson in August 1814. The county is named after Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky, and comprises about 808 square miles of land. Shelby County was created as part of the Alabama Territory before Alabama became a state on Dec. 14, 1819. The first county seat was located in Shelbyville, the area currently known as Pelham. Two of the delegates who served in the Alabama Constitutional Convention in 1819 and signed the first Alabama Constitution were from Shelby County: George Phillips and Thomas A. Rogers. Rogers built a county courthouse in 1820. Six years later, a permanent county seat was established in the southern part of the county at Columbiana. According to the 1820 Shelby County census records, the county’s population was 2,492 two years after its formation. Today, more than 215,000 people make up the county’s population, according to the latest Census estimate. As one of seven counties comprising the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area, Shelby County is bounded by Jefferson and St. Clair counties to the north, Talladega and Coosa counties to the east and Chilton and Bibb counties to the south and southwest. Two major rivers – the Coosa and the Cahaba – are located in Shelby County. About 68 percent of the population is incorporated into 17 municipalities. Shelby County boasts direct access to three major roadways, U.S. 280, Interstate 65 and U.S. 31. 8

FAITH
FAITH DIRECTORY The county is a rich place of faith for people of all walks of life. Here’s a taste of what you will find.
As a part of what is commonly known as the “Bible Belt,” faith and spirituality play a large role in the lives of many Shelby County residents. According to a report from the Association of Religion Data Archives, the county is home to approximately 230 places of worship, including 228 Christian churches, one Hindu temple and one mosque. While the majority of the county’s religious adherents are Christians, many residents identify as Hindu or Muslim, among other religions. Both the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center and the AlQubbatu Al-Khadra Mosque are located in Pelham. “In the South, there is a great emphasis on faith,” said Fr. Ray Dunmyer, current pastor of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Montevallo and former pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Birmingham. “We’re blessed to have so many people with a deep faith.” For many families in Shelby County, regular participation in religious practices is a longstanding tradition. Siluria Baptist Church Pastor Michael J. Brooks said regular church attendance is important, because it promotes kindness, compassion, selflessness and good citizenship. “It’s important what we do outside of our four walls. There are a lot of needs around us. Individual Christians are to live their faith in the world,” he said. “Churches promote a quality of life. We say that it’s about others, and not about us. We’re in church one day a week, but we’re in the world seven days a week.” Local churches also regularly find ways to serve those in need by supporting outreach organizations like Oak Mountain Ministries, collecting toys and other gifts to donate to underprivileged families during the Christmas season, and acting as voting precincts during local, state and national elections. Additionally, Brooks, Timmons and SHELBY COUNTY

Dunmyer said churches of different denominations often work together for the common good. Brooks recalled an instance in which youth from a nearby Methodist church had asked to be totally immersed in the water while baptized. Because the Methodist church did not have its own baptistry, Brooks said Siluria Baptist let them use theirs. When Siluria Baptist was in the process of ordaining a new deacon, the Methodist church let them borrow their ordination rail. For many, local places of worship have served as gathering places for community members and support systems during hardships. “Based on the people I’ve met in the community, faith in God has gotten them through a lot,” Timmons said. “And they are always there for each other, not because their religion requires it, but because there is a genuine love in them.”

Starting in the 1920s Alabaster was a site of employee housing for Alabaster Lime Company, and its name came from the business and from the mineral that is often found with limestone. It continued to grow in large part due to its location on Highway 31, the main road that connected Birmingham and Montgomery. It was incorporated in 1953 with a population of 427 and in 1971 merged with the adjacent city of Siluria. Today the city’s population has sky rocketed to become the largest in Shelby County and the fourth largest city in the Birmingham-Hoover area. It is home to two elementary schools (Creek View & Meadow View), Thompson Intermediate, Thompson Middle School and Thompson High School, which opened a new $88 million building on a 300-acre campus in 2017 that now has more than 2,000 students. The city’s population is expected to grow by more than 23 percent by 2025. Alabaster’s “Medical Mile” hosts more than 1,000 medical professionals, and a new 350,000-squarefoot retail and mix-use space, District 31, broke ground in 2018. Each June Alabaster hosts City Fest, which features live music and more, and its annual Christmas Parade is also popular. SHELBY COUNTY

If you are in the market to relocate your residence or business, here are a few reasons you should call Calera “home.” Incorporated in 1887, Calera has remained a remarkably stable community based on a strong sense of faith, family values and civic pride. Our friendly, small-town atmosphere coupled with its proximity to two of Alabama’s largest metropolitan areas, Birmingham and Montgomery, makes Calera the perfect place to live, work, and raise a family. City leadership has taken a progressive approach in preparing our city for growth. Our police and fire departments, along with our sewer, water, and natural gas systems, have been consistently upgraded and expanded so Calera’s city services rank among the best in the state. In the transportation category, three interstate exits and ready rail access make Calera an excellent location for industrial and commerical development. Completing the picture are our outstanding schools, a new modern library, exceptional parks and recreational programs and churches of many denominations. We could list many more things about Calera that make us proud, but we’d like to invite you to see and experience them for yourself. Consider paying us a visit, either online or in person, and discover all that’s special about Calera. 66

The Chelsea area was originally settled in the mid-1800s and was known as Melrose. A more formal community formed in the area after 1908 when new railroads came through, and the area was named Chelsea as formal stores, a grist mill and more were opened. The city wasn’t incorporated until 1996 and then only had a population of 906, but the area has grown expontentially since then as real estate development has moved south from Birmingham. Highway 280 runs just north of Chelsea, and much of the new development has sprung up along the corridor. Today Chelsea is the second fastest growing city in the state, with more than 200 homes constructed annually in 2016 and 2017. The city has three elementary schools—Chelsea Park, Mt Laurel and Forest Oaks—as well as Chelsea Middle School and Chelsea High School. The Chelsea Community Center offers everything from karate and ballroom dancing classes to a pickleball league. Around Chelsea you’ll find more than 23 churches of a variety of denominations including the historic Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Each year the city hosts Chelsea Fest and The Big Kaboom on the Fourth of July, and the festivities include fireworks and entertainment for all. SHELBY COUNTY

The Old Mill Square Park is now open in Columbiana. It’s located on 6 acres in our downtown area and features a 30,000-square-foot building that houses the Shelby County Arts Council with a 200-seat state-of-the-art black box theater, a secure exhibit gallery and teaching classrooms for the arts. The city maintains a 500-seat multi-purpose venue that will be available for performers, conferences and trade shows. The grounds feature an authentic European fountain from Milan, Italy, and two metal sculptures, one by artist Ted Metz, and the other by artist Nelson Grice. What a wonderful addition to our downtown area. There is also a new housing subdivision in Columbiana that will feature homes by Smith Douglas Home builders, and will allow our population to expand somewhat. We have three museums in Columbiana: The Shelby County Historical Museum, The Shelby County Iron Works Museum (just outside the city) and the George Washington Memorabilia Museum. We’re very proud of our beautiful downtown area, and we are a Main Street Alabama city. We have an abundance of unique shops in our city, and we serve as county seat to Shelby County with the most beautiful courthouse in Alabama. We are a close-knit city with old time values and a rich history as we were incorporated in 1837. 68

Incorporated in 1967, Hoover is located in both Jefferson and Shelby counties in north central Alabama. In 1968, its population was estimated at 410, and today it has grown to the sixth-largest city in the state. The city was named after William Henry Hoover Sr., an insurance agent who purchased 160 acres off Tyler Road on Shades Mountain in 1944 before building a cabin and later a house on the property. In 1954 he founded the community of Hoover in a four-block area around Deo Dara Drive, named for the Deo Dara Cedar trees he planted on the street. Today the city boasts a variety of sites to visit. The Riverchase Galleria is one of the largest shopping areas in the Southeast and includes a hotel and retail space. The 10,800-seat Hoover Metropolitan Stadium hosts a variety of sporting events throughout the year. Aldridge Gardens offers 30 acres of nature and art to enjoy, and Moss Rock Preserve is a 350-acre nature preserve that features rock outcroppings, streams, waterfalls and more. The city is also home to Ross Bridge Golf Resort and The Library Theatre, as well as a plethora of parks, golf courses, shops and restaurants. SHELBY COUNTY

Located in the geographic center of the state, Montevallo is the proud home of the University of Montevallo, American Village and the Alabama National Cemetery and is shining brighter than ever! We are the only community in the county where citizens can literally walk from a high quality preschool to a nationally recognized graduate school. The city underwent a recent comprehensive streetscape renovation project, developing a fully accessible Main Street district with a uniquely historic look and two distinctive pocket parks. As a result of successful Montevallo Main Street program efforts, downtown merchants have renovated historic building facades, and new businesses abound. Just one block off Main Street, the University of Montevallo is completing an exquisite Center for the Arts, which will host a myriad of special events. Montevallo is expanding and improving its cycling and pedestrian infrastructure and making the community more accessible to all. The new Shoal Creek Park is part of the 167-acre Mahler estate, which includes an antebellum home. Montevallo’s ongoing and annual events include the spring Arts Fest in Orr Park, Friday Nights at the Cove, Artwalks, Tinglewood Festival, American Village events, holiday parades, College Night and other arts, athletic and culture events at the University of Montevallo. 72

Mt Laurel is a traditional community that is master planned in concert with nature. With its tree-lined streets, broad sidewalks and plentiful green spaces, Mt Laurel is a sustainable neighborhood that offers residents a relaxed pace of life. It’s a place with a unique identity, formed by three core values: community, respect for nature and a commitment to the future. Taking cues from America’s greatest town building traditions, we’ve re-established the bond between people and their neighborhoods. The close proximity between residential and commercial areas promotes a level of human interaction that’s unusual in today’s hurried world. While in most neighborhoods a sidewalk or street is meant to simply get you from one point to the next, ours lead you through an experience. Of all the things that separate Mt Laurel from other neighborhoods, our abundance of trees might be the most obvious. Our community is nestled within nature, not imposed upon it, and that’s by design. With its timeless architecture and evocative sense of style, our community development was created with a commitment to the future. Superior materials and craftsmanship along with the latest technologies ensure the Mt Laurel of tomorrow will be as desirable as the Mt Laurel of today.

What began as land granted to the Kidd family in the 1800s became the Town of Vincent, Alabama. Three things led to the incorporation of the town: a school in 1854, post office and railroad by 1887. The town’s charter was enacted by the state legislature on February 16, 1887. With a population of 2,164, the town is progressive while retaining an “old town” feel. Vincent has shops and K-12 schools in the Shelby County Schools system. In addition to the quiet country living experience, other areas of Vincent offer enticing opportunities for business development. Vincent has many untapped economic possibilities. Vincent is home to Vincent Elementary School and Vincent Middle High School. Vincent Municipal Park is home to baseball fields, a walking track, a picnic pavilion and a concession stand in season, while Gorman Park offers a paved boat ramp, fishing piers, a group pavilion, picnic areas and a swing set on the Coosa River. The Lallouise Florey McGraw Public Library is equipped with public access computers and wireless internet as well as a collection of books, DVDs, CDs and books on CD. Come experience and enjoy the slower paced Vincent lifestyle and you will want to make it your lifestyle, too!

We are blessed with a rich heritage in Westover because of being an established community for well over 100 years, even though the city was incorporated only in 2001. The incorporation of Westover was decided on by the citizens to maintain our identity and for our residents to have the opportunity to benefit from the Highway 280 corridor. The comprehensive plan, adopted in 2002, carefully allowed for the continuation of the old town, rural community along with managed growth along the 280 corridor. We have also been very fortunate to have new residential subdivisions built, including Willow Oaks, The Villages of Westover and Carden Crest. These new subdivisions also allowed for the inclusion of many new and bright citizens. Services have evolved in the course of the past 15 years to include a municipal fire department, building inspections, permitting and code adoption targeting the health, safety and welfare of our citizens. There have been many other positive accomplishments such as the city library, the Westover Seniors’ activities, Music in the Park, Westover Fields at the Park, the Westover community storm shelter, area storm warning sites, the Christmas parade and participation in the Westover Business Alliance. 76

Wilsonville is a small, family-focused town located in the heart of Shelby County. Its parks boast a baseball field complex and a softball field, and its library is complete with a summer reading program and computers for public use. Wilsonville has a very qualified fire department with 22 members and two fire stations. We encourage all potential newcomers to note the many amenities that Wilsonville offers. If you are looking for recreation, Wilsonville offers Lay Lake, horse farms and a myriad of other outdoor activities. If you are looking for a church home, Wilsonville boasts six active churches. If you are looking for convenience, Wilsonville’s hometown businesses offer most typical needs, and closely surrounding communities have all the bigger stores just a short drive away in three different directions. Whatever type property you might want, acreage, waterfront, wooded, pasture, commercial or office, “small town downtown,” large or small, Wilsonville probably has it. We like what we have in Wilsonville, but are striving to make it better. We do not desire to be the next suburban sprawl of Shelby County, but do welcome growth and change measured in quality rather than quantity. SHELBY COUNTY
