Every artist gives birth to a new UNIVERSE, in which familiar things look as they have never before looked to anyone.

Designer eyewear store

“Oculus” is a designer eyewear store selling unisex adult’s and children’s prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. The design concept revolves around the idea of interconnectivity and interdependency of parts, similar to the connected parts of a pair of eyeglasses functioning as a complete whole. A block-inspired monumental stair symmetrically divides the space into two departments and leads guests to an event space above. A “mini” art gallery event space occupies the mezzanine, where customers and community members are invited to peer through magnifying lenses to view minimized artwork in greater detail. Drawing inspiration from unique tortoiseshell patterns commonly used on eyeglass frames, color and material selections were determined by studying images of sea turtles, their shells, and the oceans that they occupy. Turquoise and vibrant greens are combined with graphic patterns and naturally variegated textures, invoking an overall boisterous mood while maintaining the sophistication of a designer retailer.

ADVERTISING AGENCY

This advertising agency promotes efforts of nonprofit organizations and advances values of sustainability, wellness, community, creativity, and collaboration. Flocks of starlings called “murmurations create beautiful moving shapes in the sky when they fly together. In an effort to avoid predators, these birds work as a team to calculate their next move. While there is no one leader, each individual bird contributes to the creation of this beautiful but purposeful display. The teamwork structure of an office environment works similarly, with each employee contributing to productivity, creativity, and unity in the workplace. The interior design of the ad agency incorporates natural elements to encourage users of the space to interact with their surroundings. Indoor bamboo gardens are integrated with pathways around the office, providing areas for employees to gain inspiration or refresh their minds. They also serve as minor barriers, providing some privacy and acoustical control. Sculptural bamboo ceiling elements strengthen the connection within the building while filtering light from above. 11

Literary archives As a collaboration with two architecture students, this literary archive space is inspired by the bold, expressive works of author and anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston. The goal of the project was to create a dynamic design concept for both exterior and interior that immerses visitors into an emotional, reflective experience. The building is situated on a plot of land within the Metaire cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana, evoking an eerie but celebratory mood in conjunction with Hurston’s anthropological Voodoo studies. The building’s form embraces Hurston’s style of work by abstracting dynamic shapes and creating angles to accommodate programmatic elements. A water tunnel walkthrough and maze-like meditative niches on the ground level encourage visitors to interact with the space and concept. As the user takes the main staircase up to the first floor, they are gradually exposed to the overwhelming amount of mausoleums. This connection to the dead mimics Hurston’s anthropological interests. The ground floor is connected to the first floor by penetrating structural walls that mimic the layout of the ground level. A lowered reading “pit” on the first floor invites visitors to immerse themselves in Hurston’s work, as well as relating to the underground concept of the surrounding cemetery and lowered water tunnel below. Looking out from the interior reading space, users have visual interaction with the maze-like ground floor.

West Philadelphia community music center

The concept of this capstone thesis project is a community music center offering integrative services in music lessons, music therapy, live performances, and more to Philadelphia residents and students. By combining therapeutic values with communal collaboration, the goal of the project is to offer means of expression, wellbeing, inclusion, and diversification through music creation, participation and overall enjoyment. Music therapy is also a purposeful method in strengthening a sense of community and expanding on the positive attributes of personal identity within that community. The intent is to design a communal space that encourages all types of musical interaction. Designing for flexibility and adaptability is important as the use of space may vary with the changing needs of each individual participant. The design of the proposed project will optimize experiences in collaborative groups as well as on individual bases, promoting group learning while encouraging development of confidence and personal identity. While being an inherently lively, music-filled environment, acoustical consideration is essential to the space planning and finish selection.

Conceptual sketches

Hand drawing Taking courses in still life drawing and perspective hand drawing introduced me to artistic possibilities beyond digital rendering. Depicting scenes through manual illustration assists in establishing a visual character through my art. Attention to composition, medium, and shading techniques are skills that I have practiced through my drawing courses.

PHOTOGRAPHY

In addition to design work, I find great interest in pursuing photography as a hobby in my free time. Practicing photography allows me to expand creative horizons while gaining knowledge and experience in broader contexts. Through both film and digital media, I aim to capture beautiful and inspiring moments in time. I am drawn heavily to photographing landscapes, wildlife, and architecture in various destinations that I find myself traveling to. Documenting my travels in this manner is inspirational in learning more about the world and the various living and non-living entities that inhabit it. In addition, practicing various photographic techniques requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to take creative risks. In the future, I hope to learn more about the process of film development and experimental photography techniques. Broadening my expertise and creativity in other media as well as experiencing unfamiliar areas of the world are the primary influencing factors for my continued excitement for photography.
