content this portfolio represents a concise collection of my undergraduate study, where I was able to tackle a range of issues that require the hands of architecture and urban design alike. These issues include housing innovation, urban revitalization, community restoration, and adaptation of historic building elements to accomodate contemporary program.

about me a jovial designer driven by the intersections of architecture and music. these intersections allow me to interchangeably refer to myself as an architectural composer and a musical designer. I believe appreciation for the iterative nature of the two fields is the basis of high quality deliverables in either.

harmony hills The proposed workshop for music theory and performance for the Douglass District is geared at providing an affordable breeding ground for local and aspiring musicians of the district and that of its neighboring communities. The building’s program is an offspring of three programmatic components:

Though the “play feature is facilitated through the collaboration of musicians in pocket spaces, the primary programmatic element of play is primarily emphasized through its community park that float over the alley dividing the northern and southern portions of the site.

douglass district || analysis douglass district is a neighborhood located in the fells point area of baltimore, md. the district is bordered by s broadway, s central ave, bank st and fleet st; and it sits east of little italy and habor east. the 8-block area owes its significance to frederick douglass for his group of historic rowhouses dubbed douglass place. frederick douglass (1818-1895) constructed the five buildings as rental housing for blacks in the fells point area of baltimore.

the site’s longer edge fronts s caroline st and is bordered by eastern ave and fleet st on its northern & sourthern edges respectively. the more protected node to engage institute while the node more exposed to the site to engage public, open program.

||activity | circulation | amenity

|| site restrictions | site buildability

||concentration | socio-economy

||development | urban destination

the sourthern portion of the site sits in the flood plain and also forms part of baltimore’s commission for historical and architectural preservation (CHAP). the flood plain informs the placement of the design’s sub-grade features.

the site context is dominated by industrialuse, resulting in limited engagement with urban fabric. a community park will sit at the northern end of the site to engage foreseen new urban development for douglass district.

entries | axes the linear nature of the site provides opportunity for linear spacial organization and relatiionships that will ultimately define axes and entry points to the project’s building and park.

circulaton | organization the site will feature a series of paths that will accomodate pedestrians access at its core and bicycle access on the site’s perimeter.

anCORES the urban redevelopment is an environmentally sustainable, economically viable, and socially vibrant community purposed at restoring stability in a once blighted neighborhood of northwest baltimore. the revitalization seeks to displace the blighted blocks by exploring innovative housing and block typologies, and establishing economic and social anchors.

site analysis by sheldon alfred

by analzying the existing community anchors, the design proposal was able to use the influence of the exiisting to provide new anchors with improved accessibility and openness.

RFQ edge study reveals unaligned adjacencies, allowing the proposal to propose edge anchors to act as stabilitizers to park heights itself and the surrounding sub-neighborhoods.

the lack of connectivity at the spin of the neighborhood allowed for design opportunities that would introduce increased activity along park heights avenue and the primary cross-road, woodland ave.

economic stability by george betty

the intersection of woodland and homer avenues marks the most commercial sector of the revitalization and serves as a employment hub potentially for members in an out of the immediate community. The design opens up the office and retail courtyard to the recreation center situated across from it.

social vibrance by daniel better

the pedestrian alleys and attached backyards are sandwiched between two corridors, one public and the other private. The immediate frontage along park heights ave contrasted with the frontyard space on palmer avenue is the measure of privacy that differentiates the public and private realms. 17

the micro-house park “as we strive to live within smarter, smaller footprints, our shared spaces must be transformed to prompt individual, civic, and environmental connectedness.” the micro-house park is an open, environmenally sustainable recreational neighborhood on the outskirts of the ancores RFQ. This subcommunity is the development’s environmental implementation, to responsibly support the natural landscape and to encourage healthy, conservative and low cost lifestyles. The core of the park serves as the primary experience for a pedestrian network.

the alignment the past, present and future exist all at once as parallel moments in time. - KHALID MASOOD the proposed mount royal mansion expansion dubbed “the alignment,” will conceptually and spatially contribute to the plot of THE existing structure’s rich timeline by extending axes and growing on significant existing design elements. The extension nurtures primary and secondary spaces that will afford users a parallel experience of the past, present and future.

design intent the form of the existing building is adopted by the expansion through the extension of existing axes, wall planes, floor plates and roof line. the inserted lobby acts as a distinct void and primary horizontal circulation

marks the building’s entry. the clustered program of the existing is exploded to create pocket transition spaces between program areas. the insertion seeks to adopt the primary path as an urban edge with the landscape, especially that of the primary vehicular path through the site. the street & void relationship introduces micro-urbanism to mt. royal.the existing featured a fragmented circulation system
