Card cracking crimes down: cops Card Cracking | From Page 1 Many recruiters come from Chicagoland, Ellington said, because the proximity of NIU to Chicago offers “a level of convenience.” NIU has attempted to make people aware of this situation: An Oct.

5, 2013, NIUToday news release warned students of the scam, and the NIU Police Department has posted warnings on its website, niu. edu/publicsafety. Police have made the most contact with students through UNIV 101, Ellington said. “We are always hitting the

UNIV 101 classes, but when we see a spike that’s when we try to get the word back out through media,” Ellington said. All TCF can do is encourage its customers to file a report, and only 25 percent or less of card cracking victims do, Ellington said.

Baker said he is not sure what a “blue legislature” and “red governor” mean for NIU and the state at Wednesday’s University Council meeting. Ibrahim Abdel-Motaleb, professor and chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, asked Baker what the implications would be of Republican businessman Bruce Rauner ousting Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn in Tuesday’s midterm elections. “That’s a good question,” Baker said. “I’ve had a series of meetings today where a lot of smart people who know a lot about state government all scratched their heads. They don’t know what’s going on.” Democrats maintained their supermajority in the House, Baker said, but he is not sure how a Republican governor will play out. “It could be that they say ... ‘if we’re going to get anything done then we have to agree ... let’s figure out how to work together’ or

they act like Washington, D.C.,” Baker said.

SA wants Holmes use made cheaper Northern Star Staff

DeKalb | Student Association President Joe Frascello said at University Council Wednesday that he would like to see more affordability for student organizations that host events at the Holmes Student Center. During the SA’s report for University Council, Frascello said prospective and current students are more likely to stay and graduate if they are involved in student organizations. Those groups are required to buy food and pay for the space when holding events in the Holmes Student Center. “Many student organizations are prevented from [holding] events on campus, particularly in the Holmes Student Center, because the food costs are too high for them to afford,” Frascello said. This semester, Frascello said the SA has allocated $12,000 to student groups and most of that has gone toward food costs for events.

What would you like to see from Governor-elect Bruce Rauner’s administration? “... Especially since we’re in academia, we really need to figure out how to do this better, how to fund education better, how to make it less of a burden on students ... .” “Maybe more a little understanding of what’s going on ... for the students. Students already know what’s going on with the administration.”

“... So, with this new administration, the only thing I would like to see is just making sure that the people have what they need as far as ... health coverage. ...” “I’d like to see more jobs created and just really a change in policy, I guess, from the government. Not just continually raising taxes. Just really seeing a change.”
