DeKalb | The sound room in the Holmes Student Center, Diversions Lounge, was found covered in red graffiti Sunday after students came to move storage backstage. Christopher Kurszewski, master electrician of the School of Theatre and Dance, said the graffiti happened between late Friday and early Sunday and NIU police arrived shortly after it was discovered. “[NIU police] investigated it and they consider it a defacement, a criminal damage to property type of thing,” said NIU Spokesman Joe King. “They are not alarmed by the graffiti. They are reviewing some security tapes to track down a suspect.” There are no cameras in the Diversions Lounge, but there are some in the hallway outside, King said. “It’s criminal damage to property but it’s not gang symbols or threatening messages or something that’s got them concerned beyond the fact that someone damaged university property,” King said.

Graffiti covers audio equipment in the Holmes Student Center, Diversions Lounge. Christopher Kurszewski, master electrician of the School of Theatre and Dance, said he estimates the damage to be around $300.
NIU Police are currently looking at some suspects, King said. The damage is estimated to be $300 for two computer monitors, Kurszewski said “All the audio equipment looks bad but it will probably all still work,” Kurszewski said. “Fortunately they didn’t uncover [the soundboard]. That would have been awful.”

The door to the Diversions Lounge is supposed to be locked but the door can sometimes be “finicky” or someone may have forgotten to lock it, Kurszewski said. Graffitied messages included “NIU Pride,” “Huskies,” smiley faces, a heart and NIU in a no symbol. “I’m getting mixed messages,” Kurszewski said.
