Task force: Diverse groups need change Northern Star staff
DeKalb | Many administrative programs dedicated to diversity and inclusion were categorized as in need of transformation in the program prioritization reports released Monday. Program prioritization, which began in 2014, uses task forces to create reports that review 223 academic programs and 236 administrative programs to influence the allocation of university funds. The reports were based on narratives and data that were submitted by program leaders, such as deans and department chairs, in November. Programs were placed in one of five categories: enhanced resources, no change in resources, reduced resources, transformation and subject to additional review. These categorizations are suggestions, and do not make any definite influence on the assessed programs. The report suggests that programs placed in the transformation category evaluate program procedures and restructure. Some of the diversity and inclusion programs placed in the transform category are the Asian American Center, Center for Black Studies, the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center and the Latino Resource Center. The report states that despite their relevance to NIU’s mission
and identity, programs “designed More faculty hires in the proto [create and maintain an inclu- gram will enhance scholarly prosive, diverse community] date ductivity, according to the report. from an earlier era, where diversity initiatives were understood and implemented differently.” Therefore, an updated program may be required.
