Man charged with child pornography Northern Star staff

DeKalb | Juan Vargas, 60, of

DeKalb, was charged with distribution and possession of aggravated child pornography, among other charges, Thursday. DeKalb Police conducted a search on Vargas’ home in connection to a child pornography investigation, which was discovered to be shared from Juan Vargas November 23 to December 16, according to a DeKalb Police news release. Vargas was also charged with distribution and possession of child pornography and is being currently held in the DeKalb County Jail. Robbery reported at Blackhawk Road Northern Star staff

DeKalb | An off-campus armed robbery was reported to have occurred at approximately 10:04 p.m. Friday near the 1200 block of Blackhawk Road, according to an NIU safety bulletin. The victim reported that he was approached by two individuals and one of them hit him in the face with a handgun, according to the safety bulletin. The suspects took the victim’s cell phone and fled the scene

in a dark colored Nissan. The male suspect with the handgun was described as a dark-skinned male wearing a baseball cap, a hooded sweatshirt and gray pants. Anyone with information on the report can contact NIU Police at 815-753-1212, DeKalb Police at 815748-8400 or anonymously at 815753-8477.

Teens held in 10th Street shooting Northern Star staff

DeKalb | Two victims with gunshot wounds were transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital after a shooting was reported to have occurred on 10th and Pleasant streets Thursday, according to a DeKalb Police news release. The shooting was reported to have occurred at 3:41 p.m. Thursday, according to an NIU safety bulletin. A 16-year-old male from DeKalb was identified as a suspect shooter and arrested. The suspect was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and mob action. The 16-year-old is currently being held at the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center. Another suspect shooter, Christian Contreras, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and mob action. Women shot while sitting in taxi cab Associated Press

Chicago | Police say a passenger in a taxi cab has been shot and killed on the South Side of Chicago. The Chicago Tribune reports that the woman was among at least 10 people shot over the weekend. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as 30-year-old Shari Graham. Police spokesman Hector Alfaro said she was shot while sitting in a cab Friday night a few blocks from U.S. Cellular Field. She was struck in the back. The driver of the cab sped away from the scene and called paramedics. Graham was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police do not believe she was the intended target of the shooting. Officers are searching for the gunman.

Airplane hopper to appear in court Associated Press

Chicago | A judge has denied a request to release a woman with a history of sneaking onto airplanes to a Chicago nursing home following her latest arrest. Marilyn Hartman, 64, appeared in court Tuesday in Chicago. Police say she was arrested Feb. 17 at a bus shuttle center at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The judge called for a probation supervisor and a nursing home representative to attend court next week to figure out the next step.
