DeKalb | The suspect in a
Wednesday carjacking and suicide has been identified as Malik Henry, 19, of DeKalb. Henry shot himself while in the car he had stolen from 919 Ridge Drive, according to a DeKalb Police news release. An emergency 911 call placed at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday from an office in West Ridge Apartments indicated that Henry took a maintenance employee’s vehicle keys at gunpoint and drove off with the vehicle. Within minutes, DeKalb Police found the stolen car being driven on the 100 block of N. Annie
Glidden Road. The car turned onto Lincoln Highway and the chase was continued to Rochelle near the interchange of Lincoln Highway and Interstate 39 where a pursuit termination device was used. Henry’s car left the road and came to a stop in a field where he shot himself inside the car. Henry was pronounced dead at the scene. The scene was secured by the DeKalb Police with the assistance of the Rochelle Police. The subsequent investigation by the DeKalb Police has linked Henry to a robbery that occurred at about 8 p.m. Tuesday at 919 Ridge Drive.
In Brief
Head of police to wear body camera The Associated Press
Chicago | The head of Chicago police said he’s going to be wearing a body camera as part of a pilot program. The Chicago Sun-Times reports Interim Superintendent Eddie Johnson said he’ll start wearing the camera today. Johnson said the idea is not just to fight crime but also learn from encounters with people in the community. Chicago launched the pilot program last year with dozens of officers testing the cameras in a few areas. It plans to expand this year. Police say about 450 body cameras will be shipped to Chicago this week. Authorities say the pilot program appears to have cut down on the number of complaints against officers.
Police monitoring called ‘unsettling’ The Associated Press
Chicago | The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois said reports of Chicago police monitoring peaceful protest groups is “unsettling.” The group issued a Sunday statement responding to a Chicago SunTimes report, which outlined seven investigations by police since 2009 to monitor protest groups exercising free-speech rights. Emails released by the city in the wake of the 2014 fatal policeinvolved shooting of Laquan
Twombly Road Ridge Drive 19
McDonald showed officials watched actions of protesters closely. The black teenager was shot by a white officer 16 times. The Sun-Times reports the department’s top attorney approved 2015 plans to send undercover officers to monitor meetings, including those held by Black Lives Matter activists, churches and philanthropic organizations. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the investigations were to make sure everyone is safe.
Court program reports successful The Associated Press
Pittsfield | A western Illinois court program designed to keep minor offenses off of individuals’ criminal records is reporting early success. Zach Boren, Pike County State’s Attorney, tells The Herald-Whig that all but one of the initial 16 participants completed the county’s diversion program in its first year. The program replaces a teen court that had struggled to replace jury members who would move away for college. Participants in the six-month diversion program must complete community service. They also pay a $100 fee along with a $50 contribution to drug prevention programs. Those with prior criminal records other than traffic citations aren’t eligible. Boren said that each of the initial participants was charged with illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor.
